L’Altra Italia compie 10 anni e l’incoraggiamento che ci viene da centinaia di amici ci spinge a non mollare questa enorme scommessa: staccare un pezzo d’Italia di oggi e trasportarlo a Toronto. Un’opera che abbiamo voluto rappresentare anche graficamente affianco al logo dell’Altra Italia. In programma per quest’anno prevede tanto cinema, da sempre questo è il linguaggio che l’Altra Italia predilige, ma anche musica, leggera e classica, danza e teatro, cucina ed incontri, riflessioni e conversazioni, nei teatri e negli spazi bellissimi e moderni di questa metropoli. Per la X Edizione di “Al Cinema con l’Altra Italia” ci ritroveremo nella prestigioso TIFF BellLight Box. Un accordo importante quello firmato con una delle massime organizzazioni del cinema mondiale. Alleanza che ci riempie di orgoglio, che ha comportato uno sforzo economico notevole e che non avremmo potuto affrontare senza il sostegno dei nostri soci e la generosa collaborazione degli sponsors. Appoggio che ha anche reso possibile la conferma del momento enogastronomico prima della proiezione: il cosiddetto contorno glamour che quest’anno avrà luogo nel locale Maison Mercer. Durante la stagione continueremo poi il viaggio nella enogastronomia italiana seduti “A Tavola con l’Altra Italia”. Dopo Toscana, Lazio, Abruzzo, Liguria, Veneto, Sicilia ed Emilia Romagna, assaggeremo via via altre cucine regionali, seguendo un cammino di conoscenza che passerà attraverso il convivio. Si allarga la selezione di titoli disponibili nella Videoteca dell’Altra Italia trasferita nella sede dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura e ai soci sarà dato pieno accesso al prestito dei DVD: oltre 70 film, una selezione che rappresenta il meglio del cinema italiano contemporaneo. Questo è solo un assaggio di quello che ci aspetta per questa stagione 2011-12. Dear Friends, L’Altra Italia turns 10 years old and the encouragement we have been receiving from hundreds of friends gives us the energy to not give up this huge challenge: to bring a piece of today’s Italy and transfer it to Toronto. This year’s program will include lots of cinema which has always been L’Altra Italia’s preference. There will also be music, classical and pop, dance and theatre performances, cooking events, workshops and conferences, in theatres and in beautiful, modern spaces within this city. For the 10th edition of “Al Cinema con L’Altra Italia”, we will be back in the prestigious TIFF Bell LightBox; an important agreement signed with one of the most renowned organization in the world. This alliance has made us very proud, even though it resulted in a greater economic effort that could never be afforded without the members support and the generous cooperation of our sponsors. This same great support has made possible the eno-gastronomic social encounter before the screening, along with glamorous ambience that this year will take place at the Maison Mercer.
During the season, we will continue with our Italian eno-gastronomic discovery trip with “A Tavola con L’Altra Italia”. After Tuscany, Latium, Abruzzo, Liguria, Veneto Sicily and Emilia Romagna, we will be able to taste other regional cuisine, following a path of knowledge that will pass through the banquet. We have a larger selection of titles available at L’Altra Italia Video Library, now transferred to the Italian Cultural Institute head office where all the members can have access to borrow all the DVD ‘s. There are more than 70 movies, a selection that represents the best of the contemporary Italian Cinema. This is just a taste of what you can expect for this season 2011-12. Our sincere thanks are directed to the Consul General of Italy Minister Gianni Bardini, Adriana Frisenna, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, and Ascal Bova, Director of the Italian Trade Commission, for their important and constant support. Once you enter the prestigious Theatre , home of the Toronto International Film Festival, you will see the projection room which is a jewel of technology and design very unique in the world. NESSUNO MI PUÒ GIUDICARE 9 DICEMBRE, 2011 La trentacinquenne Alice vive in una bella villetta di Roma nord, ha un marito, un figlio di 9 anni e tre domestici extra-comunitari. La sua vita sembra un sogno dorato ma si rivelerà ben presto un incubo. Suo marito, imprenditore nel ramo dei sanitari, muore in un incidente e il suo avvocato le spiega che è rimasta sul lastrico. A questo punto deve inventarsi qualcosa per salvare la sua vita e quella del figlio e l’unico modo che trova per guadagnare molto denaro in poco tempo è fare il mestiere più antico del mondo. Si informa su internet e si fa dare una mano da una che il “mestiere” lo fa da anni: Eva, una trentenne bellissima apparentemente superficiale e cinica. Il film analizza in chiave comica la generazione del compromesso, quella che non ha scelta e deve prendere decisioni estreme per tirare a campare. A Tavola con L’Altra Italia Dopo Toscana, Abruzzo, Liguria, Veneto, Sicilia ed Emilia Romagna, prosegue il viaggio alla scoperta della cultura regionale attraverso l’enogastronomia. L’Altra Italia, che da anni organizza eventi a carattere gastronomico, ha voluto creare un’iniziativa, un appuntamento fisso per i nostri soci. L’enogastronomia e l’atmosfera conviviale, è abbinata alla poesia, alla musica, alle storia, al folklore che così tanto distinguono le nostre venti regioni. Tutti conosciamo e decantiamo le lodi della “cucina italiana”, un concetto astratto quasi quanto quello della “cucina mediterranea”. In realtà in Italia esistono tradizioni culinarie regionali che si differenziano tra loro per l’uso di prodotti tipici del territorio e per metodi di cottura legati a influenze storico-culturali e ambientali: pensate all’assurdità di trovare in Sicilia, terra di pesce prelibato, una bella sogliola alla mugnaia cotta nel burro! Per questo abbiamo deciso di promuovere questo viaggio attraverso la cucina delle regioni, che ci permetterà di gustare piatti prelibati e studiati, per arrivare ad apprezzare meglio il territorio dal quale nascono e, per quanto possibile, la natura dei perché. Ad aiutarci nella realizzazione di questo programma è l’ufficio ICE di Toronto, diretta dal Dott. Pasquale Bova, al quale vanno i nostri più sentiti rigraziamenti. Throughout the 2011-2012 season we will embark again on the discovery of Italian regional cultures through food and wine. L’Altra Italia will host regular culinary events of specific regions where food and wine specialties will be introduced in conjunction with poetry, music, history and folklore. We all know and praise “Italian Cuisine” which is though an abstract concept as “Mediterranean Cuisine” is. In fact, in Italy there are several regional culinary traditions that are influenced by a particular history, culture or environment and that differ from each other because of the many different ingredients and methods of cooking. For this reason we decided to begin our journey to discover Italian regional cuisine. We will enjoy authentic regional dishes and come to understand and better appreciate the local areas that originate these great traditions. We express particular gratitude to the Italian Trade Commission of Toronto, directed by Mr. Pasquale Bova, which is always available to support us and guide us throughout this project. ICE representative will be joined, from time to time, by various experts who will guide us through the culinary traditions of specific regions, helping us better recognize and value their secrets and particularities.

Un accordo sottoscritto con l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, permetterà ai soci dell’Altra Italia di poter prendere in prestito i DVD recandosi direttamente nella sede dell’IIC: 496 Huron Street - Toronto, ON M5R 2R3. Orario di apertura al pubblico: Mattina: da Lunedì a Venerdì 09:00-13:00 Pomeriggio: da Lunedì a Venerdì 14:00-17:00. The VideoLibrary The pourpose of this initiative is to promote the circulation of Italian culture through this service of historical and cultural documentation of our. Members of the association have full access to the loan of movies from the videolibrary: a selection of more than 60 movies that represent the best contemporary Italian cinema. Thanks to an agreement with the Italian Cultural Institute, L’Altra Italia’s members can borrow DVDs from the Institute building located at: 496 Huron Street - Toronto, Open Mon-Fri- from 9am to1pm and from 2pm to 5 pm. L’Associazione L’Altra Italia The Association 2011-2012 L’altra italia nasce nel 2002, come una associazione senza scopo di lucro. A fondarla un gruppo di persone giunte in Canada in un passato non molto lontano. Giovani, professionisti che, seppur si siano integrati nel tessuto sociale e lavorativo canadese, hanno il desiderio di mantenere un legame forte con l’Italia. Occorre subito precisare che, sebbene L’Altra Italia si caratterizzi nell’avere in predominanza soci giunti da non molto in Canada, è sin dall’inizio aperta a tutti coloro che si sentano vicini all’Italia e alla sua cultura. Il progetto è quello di vivere il Canada avendo la possibilità di rifugiarsi in un’isola di italianità, luogo d’incontro e di produzione di eventi culturali legati alle nostra patria e alle nostre radici. ll lavoro dell’associazione si svolge attraverso l’azione di volontariato degli associati, tipica delle organizzazioni non-profit, e la continua ricerca di soggetti disponibili a sostenere economicamente e logisticamente i singoli progetti. L’Associazione vede nei suoi soci dei promotori di iniziative, dei ricercatori di progetti, procacciatori di risorse, di nuovi contatti.
L’Altra Italia was founded in 2002 in Toronto. It is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to highlighting the Italian arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between Canada and Italy. Growing out the success of the cinema screenings, the association is now an organization that presents year-round programs. Our initiatives have drawn an outpouring of support from the community, from the Italian istitutional organizations and local sponsors. Each year we have grown as a cultural entity and initiated more ambitious programs and events. We want to emphasize that L’Altra Italia, although predominantly made up of Italians newly arrived to Canada, is open to all those that have an affinity with Italy and its culture. While enjoying the Canadian lifestyle, our goal is to have the opportunity to find an Italian retreat, a meeting environment where we could create cultural events connected to our homeland and to our roots.

L’Altra Italia intende coltivare, diffondere e sviluppare l’interesse per la cultura italiana anche tra i suoi giovanissimi soci, contribuendo alla loro formazione intellettuale ed artistica.
The association’s projects, like any other not for profit organization, are carried out thanks to the voluntary activity of its members who also contribute by searching for new sponsors or by developing contacts with whoever can provide any sort of support. The Association sees its members as partners who seek new projects, resources and contacts as well as promoters of all its initiatives. In a multicultural and hospital country such as Canada, where many diverse events occur, L’Altra Italia intends to be a promoter, a catalyst and an amplifier of several events in different sectors: exhibitions, conferences, conventions, seminars, all related to cultural and artistic themes. L’Altra Italia is committed to supporting initiatives such as theatre shows, movie viewings, concerts and any other events or activities that might generate socializing.
