WELCOME TO OUR SECOND YEAR! The second edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) will take place June 26 - July 6 in Toronto and Vaughan. Building on the success of the 2012 inaugural edition, the expanded 11-day event will showcase the best in new Italian cinema from around the world and Canada, including 24 feature film premieres.

We are thrilled to report that this year we received an avalanche of submissions. We are delighted to showcase an eclectic slate of 62 Italian and Italian-themed films from several countries and we are privileged to have the world-renowned TIFF Bell Lightbox again as our main venue. Screenings will also take place in the heart of Little Italy at the Royal Cinema and at the AMC Interchange in Vaughan. In addition, the ICFF is expanding nationally: we are proud to announce our partnership with the Italian Institute of Culture in Montreal and the Cinémathèque québécoise, Montreal’s museum of moving images, where we will present a wonderful selection of this year’s program. Seeking to use the power of film to both entertain and educate, ICFF works to build bridges of understanding between ethnic, religious and national groups. This is not merely a Festival of the “Made in Italy,” but an event whose mission is to include the Italian culture that has proliferated and developed almost everywhere, including, of course, Canada.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JUNE 10, 2013 Historically, Italy has given a lot to the art of filmmaking, and the world has always been fascinated by the cinema italiano. For the second year, ICFF will explore the works of contemporary film directors who are representative of a renaissance in Italian cinema. This will bring to Toronto not only films “Made in Italy,” but also films from all over the world exploring its new frontiers. This year’s slate, 100% larger than the inaugural edition, includes a wide array of genres – from comedies and political dramas – to documentaries and shorts, and covers a variety of issues.

By taking root, this festival is becoming another trait in the identification of a city that, through its multiculturalism, is truly worldclass. Being the home of a large number of Italian Canadians and boasting a passion for film that is unique throughout the world, the ICFF adds a further tassel to Toronto’s cultural mosaic. Filmgoers will be able to watch over 60 films, ranging from documentaries, to shorts, to political dramas to comedies, such as the opening night film Benvenuto Presidente, which will have its North American Premiere. Many films enjoying their Canadian premiere at the ICFF are Siberian Education and The Last Leopard: Portrait of Goffredo Lombardo, by Oscar winners Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore. The ICFF will also host the world premiere of Real Gangsters, with Canadians Frank D’Angelo and Nick Mancuso, who will attend. Renowned Italian actors Walter Nudo (Hopeful Notes), Nicolas Vaporidis (Outing – Accidental Fiancés), and Valeria Marini (I Won’t Pay) will also attend the festival. Film master Silvio Soldini will attend to receive a lifetime achievement award. The ICFF is the culmination of a complex maze of logistical and financial initiatives that would have been unthinkable without the support we received from our institutional partners, our generous sponsors, our board members and, last but certainly not least, the dozens of volunteers that joined the ICFF. I am very happy to send my personal greeting to the organizers of the second edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival in Toronto. This event was founded only a year ago, but it has already reached a pre-eminent position among the cultural events that will take place in Toronto this June. Significantly, this is the month that Ontario dedicates to the culture and historical heritage of the Italian community living in this important Canadian Province. Last summer when I came back to Canada as director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Montréal, I was not surprised to learn of the great success of the first edition of the ICFF in Toronto. I personally knew the people in charge of the Festival, the volunteers and many members of the public. I knew of their great passion for Italian Cinema and I saw them overcoming all the obstacles in the years of the exponential growth of L’Altra Italia association. It was a growth that the IIC in Toronto firmly supported during my posting there from 2005 to 2010. Now I am very happy to see everybody determined to make this second edition of ICFF succeed at an even higher level. To everybody I send my greetings and best wishes for a resounding successful festival. From Montreal I am also pleased to announce that this year the ICFF expands to Quebéc with a version “subtitled” in French! It’s a “Festival du film italien contemporain” which will screen its films at the Cinémathèque québécoise in synchrony with Toronto. It is a first edition but local ambitions run as high as in Toronto and our Institute in Montreal intends to support them. It won`t be a competition but a close collaboration; L’Altra Italia style. Hopefully we will be able to confirm soon that “Rien ne réussit comme le succès”. It would be good for Italian Cinema in Montreal but it could also help ICFF to expand further in Canada ... and why not to the fair city of Vancouver? Who knows? Have a great Festival, guys!

The strength of this second edition of the festival lies in its vast offer. In addition to many films made and produced in Italy, there will also be films made abroad, short films as well as documentaries from the Italian diaspora. A parade of themes, faces, images, stories reflecting contemporary Italy’s essence which I am sure will attract and excite the curiosity of younger people. To the Festival, and its enterprising organizers, and to the public, best wishes that these ten days of Italian cinema will entertain and fascinate. Da parte dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura desidero esprimere il più sentito apprezzamento all’Associazione L’Altra Italia per aver dato vita all’Italian Contemporary Film Festival. Il successo della prima edizione dello scorso anno ha confermato quanta domanda ci sia, in una città pur già così ricca di manifestazioni cinematografiche, di cinema italiano. Il pregio di questa seconda edizione del festival sta nella sua vasta offerta. Oltre a film girati e prodotti in Italia si potranno vedere film realizzati all’estero, cortometraggi e documentari di cineasti di origine italiana. Una carrellata di temi, volti, immagini, storie che rifletterà l’essenza dell’Italia contemporanea e che sono certa incuriosirà e attrarrà l’interesse anche del pubblico più giovane. As Canadians of Italian heritage, we have many reasons to be proud. Canada gave our families a permanent home that provided freedom, peace and opportunity. With those elements, the richness of our culture was permitted to take root and thrive. Its propagation throughout our society speaks to its richness. The value systems of our parents are evident not in words, but in the accomplishments of the generations that followed them and are now following us. Italian Heritage Month is a time to remember their sacrifices, bond with each other and build bridges with other communities that make up the people of Canada. It is also a time to celebrate our achievements and showcase our strengths and continuing contributions to Canada’s success. Canadians of Italian heritage are but one strand of the Canadian tapestry and, together with the others, weave the very fabric of our Canadian identity. The ICFF allows us to reconnect with our Italian roots and see what is influencing Italians residing in Italy. Nurture your heritage and be fiercely proud of our country, Canada! As we showcase the Italian heritage, it is my hope that the best of all our cultures are highlighted and we strengthen our bonds as one community, one magnificent country. It is the age of Imperial Rome. Young Timo, an orphan of Pompeii’s terrible eruption, is adopted by general Chirone and raised in the most famous Gladiators’ Academy in Rome. Unfortunately, Timo is not exactly gladiator material. He just wants to hang out with his friends and avoid his stepfather’s bizarre training sessions at all cost. However, when Timo encounters the lovely Lucilla, he decides to change his life and bring out the valour within himself that was never harnessed before. And as they say in Rome, if “fortune favours the bold” … hard times are awaiting Timo. Roma Imperiale. IGINIO STRAFFI started his career in Italy as a sketcher for comic books for several magazines and publishers. He directed various animated TV series, including the Winx Club which became a worldwide success and is now broadcast in over 130 countries. He is the writer and director of three animated feature films.

BRIGHT FLIGHT IL SOLE DENTRO CANADIAN PREMIERE
This is the story of a long journey embarked upon by Yaguine and Fodè, two Guinean teenagers who have written on behalf of all children and young Africans. Their letter is addressed “To their Excellencies the members and leaders of Europe”, asking for help for schools, food and health care. With the letter in their pocket, Yaguine and Fodè hide in the cargo compartment of a plane en route to Brussels. So begins their remarkable journey of hope. This narrative intersects with the story of another trip, this time from Europe to Africa, which occurs ten years later, made by two other teenagers and their soccer ball. È la storia di un lungo viaggio, quello di Yaguine e Fodè, due adolescenti guineani che hanno scritto a nome di tutti i bambini ed i ragazzi africani una lettera indirizzata “Alle loro Eccellenze i membri e responsabili dell’Europa“. SCIALLA Luca, 15, is a restless teenager who is growing up in Rome without a father and who is unconsciously looking for a guide. Bruno is a single man who left teaching and found refuge in the apathy of being a private tutor. Bruno has never been a guide to himself, but his monotonous daily life undergoes a sudden transformation when he finds out that Luca is his son. The rebellious student and the melancholy teacher are forced to live together and open up to each other. FRANCESCO BRUNI debuted as a filmmaker in 2011 with Easy! which premiered at the 68th Venice Film Festival, winning the prize for best narrative feature. He went on to collaborate with Francesca Comencini, the comedians Ficarra and Picone, as well as Spike Lee, on the script for Miracle at St. Anna. Bruni also taught screenwriting at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia from 2000 to 2010.

LUCKY AND ZORBA LA GABBIANELLA E IL GATTO This animated feature was adapted from a short story by the Chilean writer Luis Sepulveda “Story of a seagull and a cat that taught him to fly.” The story tells us how Kengah, a seagull about to die after being poisoned by an oil spill, gives his egg to Zorba the cat, making him promise: not to eat the egg, to look after it until it opens, and to teach the bird to fly. The orphan is called Lucky by the entire community of cats. Before learning to fly, little Lucky has to learn about himself and understand that he is not a cat. From the Alpine heights of northern Italy to the sun-drenched island of Sicily, each of Italy’s 20 regions has something unique and wonderful to offer. Italy’s diverse regional cultural heritages, histories, traditions, languages, cuisines, make it one of the most interesting, diverse and sought after countries in the world. The Italian Contemporary Film Festival presented by IC Savings has created a section dedicated to the discovery of Italy’s regions through cinema. ICFF Regional Spotlight is also a culinary journey. In many cases, regionallythemed refreshments will be matched to specific films. Some of each region’s most prestigious chefs and sommeliers

RICCARDO MILANI started his career as an assistant director to Nanni Moretti, Mario Monicelli and Daniele Luchetti, then he debuted as a director with the film Auguri Professore. He has also worked in the advertising industry, winning the Bronze Lion at the Cannes Awards for advertising. UNA DOMENICA NOTTE WORLD PREMIERE Antonio Colucci, 46, dreamed of becoming a famous director of horror movies, but his first attempt was a fiasco. He marries and has a son, but his monotonous life prevents him from pursuing his dream, keeping him stuck in the suburbs. Yet his aspiration keeps burning somewhere inside of him. He finally decides to look for funds for a low-budget movie. What he eventually discovers is that the fear sourrounding him is much more deadly than the horror movie he wants to shoot. Once they find out about the possibility of obtaining a grant from the region of Puglia in support of entrepreneurial activities in the fashion field, the two friends decide to attempt taking on this great adventure. Soon they learn that the grant is given only to common law couples. At that point the only way to forestall ruin is to pretend they are gay and fulfill Riccardo’s dream of opening a fashion house. FIABESCHI COMES HOME FIABESCHI TORNA A CASA WORLD PREMIERE Enrico Fiabeschi is alone in Bologna. Anna, his girlfriend, left him. He has no job. He didn’t even graduate from university, despite all the years spent studying. His friends have gone their separate ways and Enrico feels like the city itself has abandoned him, as a foreign, almost hostile, entity, forcing him to go back to Calabria. Once there, his memories and the inhabitants of the small town of Cuculicchio seem to be frozen in the past, pushing him to question his life. Fiabeschi will try to find the answers in his own way, focusing on the direction he wants to go in his life and maybe finally recognizing his true love. Enrico Fiabeschi è solo a Bologna. LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2012 Best Technical Contribution for Cinematography The Ciraulos are a poor Sicilian family living in Palermo’s ‘Zen’ neighbourhood. Nonetheless, they own a bright new Mecedes, the best car in town, parked right in front of their house. The car was bought with the grievance compensation they received after the accidental death of their daughter Serenella, the victim of a mafia shootout. Their Mercedes, blessed with holy water, rather than being a symbol of wealth, will soon become a sign of misery, a dangerous instrument of ruin and defeat. I Ciraulo vivono poveramente nel quartiere Zen di Palermo. Però davanti all’uscio di casa tengono parcheggiata una Mercedes fiammante, la più bella della città, acquistata con il risarcimento percepito in seguito alla morte della figlia Serenella. CANADIAN PREMIERE At the end of the 1800s, Alessandro and Pietro live in a small town in the Appennini mountains. The brothers are very different, yet very close, especially after their mother’s death. Her last gifts to them were two marvelous, untamed horses. Once Alessandro becomes an adult, he voices the desire to travel beyond the mountains and go far away, while Pietro wants to become a breeder and live with Veronica, the girl he loves. THE GIRL BY THE LAKE LA RAGAZZA DEL LAGO Anna is found naked and dead on a lakeshore. A brilliant detective (Sanzio) questions a number of potential suspects: Anna’s father, her combative boyfriend, and her surly stepsister. While putting together the pieces of the puzzle, Sanzio has to contend with a wife riddled with Alzheimer’s and a rebellious teenage daughter who hardly speaks to him. Based on the novel ‘Don’t look back’ by Karin Fossum, this is a taut, tense thriller set in an idyllic mountainous region of Italy that hides a mundane yet deadly evil. SHUN LI AND THE POET IO SONO LI
CANADIAN PREMIERE Shun Li works in a textile factory in the outskirts of Rome, in the hope of sponsoring her eight-year-old son who lives in China. Suddenly, she is transferred to Chioggia, a small city-island in the Veneto lagoon, to work as a bartender. Bepi, a Slavic fisherman, nicknamed “the Poet,” has been a regular at her pub for years. The friendship growing between Shun Li and Bepi upsets the Chinese and the local communities as they both interfere with the relationship. Il film racconta la storia dell’amicizia tra una giovane donna cinese ed un pescatore di origini slave, su un’isola della laguna veneta che sta attraversando un periodo di cambiamenti economici. CANADIAN PREMIERE Marcello Zappatore is a 33-year-old man from Lecce. He plays the electric guitar in a local Satanist heavy metal band. Suddenly, his life is affected by an extraordinary event: an uncomfortable itch on the side of his rib cage that turns out to be a stigmata. Marcello doesn’t know the answer but he undertakes a deep personal voyage in two very different and apparently incompatible worlds, God and Rock. NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE Written and directed by Giovanni Columbu, Su Re is a rereading of the Passion of Christ translated into the Sardinian dialect and transposed within the harsh landscape of Sardinia. The movie starts and finishes in the grave, where Mary cries over her dead son. The story itself has already happened but the memories come back and repeat themselves as scenes narrated from the different perspectives of the protagonists, retracing the four canonical Gospels, each with their own sensitivity. In 1976 a group of low-budget horror filmmakers turn to Italy’s Berberian Sound Studio to work on the sound effects for a horror film. Gilderoy, a naive sound technician, leaves England for the studio to work on horror master Santini’s final film. Gilderoy, a documentary filmmaker, is making his first dramatic foray. He becomes mired in a new world, one dominated by exploitation and callous manipulation. He slowly becomes a victim of his own personal demons, fed by the letters he receives from his mother and by the violent sounds with which he works. LETTER TWO is a performance of Tony Nardi’s monologue originally presented as a theatre piece as part of the triptych TWO LETTERS…And Counting! LETTER TWO challenges misconceptions about commedia dell’arte by present-day theatre critics and directors. It explores a history of an ‘actor-less’ theatre culture in Canada at the hands of a ‘director’s theatre’, in which, increasingly, a tradition of overtrained actors and under-trained directors is encouraged. THE RESURRECTION OF TONY GITONE After struggling to make it in Hollywood, Nino finally lands a part when he is cast opposite an international star in a famous director’s movie. The Angela Baldassarre Memorial Award is presented in memory of a gifted Toronto film critic who lost her battle with cancer on November 15, 2007. Angela was also vice-president of the Toronto Film Critics Association. She served on film festival juries around the world. She was one of the founders of L’Altra Italia, the Italian Canadian cultural association, which represents the seed from which the Italian Contemporary Film Festival has blossomed.
