We owe the opening of this festival to the encouragement and the enthusiasm that we have felt these past few years from a kind of ‘virtual village’ called “l’Altra Italia,” a cultural association that celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year and which has grown exponentially. For this reason, we felt that this would be the right time to start a new milestone project and fully expand our ventures into the mainstream. The ICFF will be a six-day cinematic exploration of Italian lifestyle, culture, heritage and history. Seeking to use the power of film to both entertain and educate, ICFF works to build bridges of understanding between ethnic, religious and national groups. This is not merely a Festival of the “Made in Italy,” but an event whose mission is to include the Italian culture that has proliferated and developed almost everywhere, including, of course, Canada. Screenings will be supplemented with guest appearances by filmmakers, actors, authors, academics and other expert speakers and complemented by Q&A sessions. The mission of the ICFF is also to create a commercial forum to bring together Italian, Canadian and international operators and a series of conferences centered (at least in part) on young filmmakers.
The ICFF is the culmination of a complex maze of logistical and financial initiatives that would have been unthinkable without the support we received from our institutional partners, our generous sponsors, our board members and, last but certainly not least, the dozens of volunteers that joined the ICFF. Finally, we would like to welcome you to experience the dedication and the joy we all feel in bringing you this wonderful festival. We hope it inspires you the same way it has so many of us. See you at the movies!

Councillor’s Letter ICFF Awareness by Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, seconded by Councillor Frances Nunziata Recommendations Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, seconded by Councillor F r a n c e s Nunziata, recommends that: 1.City Council formally endorse the inaugural Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) that will take place this summer in Toronto. 2.City Council direct the City Manager to report to the Economic Development Committee on how the City can support the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and its activities. Summary The Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) is organized by “L’Altra Italia Cultural Association”, which has more than 1,000 members and has been screening Italian films in the GTA for ten years, in collaboration with the Bell Lightbox (TIFF) Toronto, AMC Interchange 30 Vaughan and Royal Theatre Toronto. ICFF contributes to the celebration of the City of Toronto’s cultural diversity with the artistic flair for cinema. The organization aims to promote awareness, appreciation and pride in the diversity of Italian heritage and culture, through creative expression in film. The debut screening of various Italian films will run from June 26 to July 1, 2012 at the Bell Lightbox Theatre, 350 King Street West in Toronto. This spectacular event will be coupled with cuisine tasting with the participation of Italian Restaurants, and a galleria of Italian art and literature.
Italian Contemporary Film Festival, As one of five children born of Italian immigrants, I know first hand the joy it was to be raised in Toronto with Italian culture and custom all around me. Nothing makes me more proud than to come together with my family and friends and take part in all that is great to be Italian; from the food, music, history, art, wine, love of life and of course Italian film. I am truly honoured to be working with the L’Altra Italia Cultural Association, which is organizing the first edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) to t ake place here in Toronto during Canada and Ontario’s “Italian Heritage Month,” recognized by the City of Toronto. ICFF will be an influential showcase of Italian life, culture and history through the medium of Italian contemporary cinema. I am proud to stand behind the Italian Contemporary Film Festival in supporting their efforts to bring together talented filmmakers to the Greater Toronto Are a and celebrate our It alian her it age. I wish to wholeheartedly applaud L’Altra Italia for launching the “Italian Contemporary Film Festival” which, I am certain, will find an enthusiastic response both in terms of attendance and critique. It is a daring and complex undertaking which demands vision, expertise and a grain of laudable “foolhardiness” which luckily L’Altra Italia has in abundance. No doubt the Festival, with its plenty of merits, will fill a conspicuous vacuum in the map of community activities in Toronto. First of all, it is apt to assemble a highly diverse crowd of Italian Canadians, young and less young, and also non Italians passionate about Italy. In fact, this is proven by the very large number and variety of public Institutions, private companies and community associations that have embraced the idea and support it convincingly. The Festival lends itself as a wonderful opportunity for the Italian Canadian Community and the “Italophiles” to join forces in pursuing such a fascinating project. After all, contemporary Italian cinema is extremely vital and of very high quality, but, for a number of reasons - among which is its preference for the comedy and psychological genres - it finds it difficult, despite its merits, to adequately break through in North America. The intense calendar of activities of L’Altra Italia and the special “showcase” offered by the Festival represent formidable tools to give continuity and depth to the promotion of Italian cinema which is at the same time great culture and big business. I am confident that the upcoming Festival will pave the way to future editions which will be enriched also by a commercial dimension for the entertainment industry, with great benefits for the distribution of the latest productions in Canada. As Canadians of Italian Heritage we have much to be proud of. Our rich history and traditions have added to the civilization of the entire world and are evident in every aspect of life. The month of June provides us with an opportunity to celebrate our customs and traditions and to reflect on how we can continue to nurture these traditions and ensure they inspire future generations to further enrich our society. Today’s world is often reflected in the themes that we see on the silver screen. Film is also a medium familiar to all generations, esp e c ially the youth and as such, prov ide s a wonder ful opportunity to learn more about who we are as Italians and Canadians of Italian heritage. The ICFF will provide a cross-section of both Italian and Italian Canadian films made by directors whose origins are tied to our Italian culture. As such, they are relevant and worthy of being viewed, discussed and celebrated. It is our belief that the ICFF will become a marquee event in future editions of Italian Heritage Month celebrations. This festival adds a further tassel to Toronto’s cultural mosaic. Despite being the home of a large number of Italian Canadians and boasting a passion for film that is unique throughout the world, this metropolis don’t have an annual event dedicated to Italian cinema. We hope that our initiative can change that, by taking root and becoming another trait in the identification of a city that, through its multiculturalism and quality entertainment, can be truly world-class. Filmgoers will be able to attend 16 films, ranging from documentaries, to shorts, to political dramas to light-hearted comedies, such as To Rome With Love, which will have its Canadian debut at ICFF before going into general release. Other films enjoying their Canadian premiere at ICFF are: Che Bella Giornata (What a Beautiful Day), which set an Italian box office record, and Posti in Piedi in Paradiso (A Flat for Three). Furthermore, La Scomparsa di Patò (The Vanishing of Patò), Immaturi, il Viaggio (Immature, the Trip) and Anna, Teresa e le Resistenti, starring Canadian actor Nick Mancuso, will have their North American premiere. Renowned Italian directors Rocco Mortelliti (La Scomparsa di Patò) and Ivan Cotroneo (Kryptonite!) will also attend the festival. Altogether it’s a rich and diverse programme that tells, I believe, a fascinating story about where Italian cinema is today, what it can learn from the past, and where it is going in the future. ICFF moviegoers will cast their ballots for the Best Narrative feature. The winning film will receive the ICFF Audience Award and a statuette created by renowned artist Silvio Mastrodascio. The Toronto Film Critics Association will present a second prize, the Angela Baldassarre Award, in memory of a gifted Toronto film critic who lost her battle with cancer in 2007. We’re very excited about the films that we’re showcasing this year. It’s a solid lineup of high-quality cinema. So please browse around the program. We’re sure you’ll find something you’ll like. What a Beautiful Day
Checco is a bouncer at a nightclub in Brianza who dreams of becoming a cop. Through a series of zany circumstances, and thanks to a recommendation from the Archbishop of Milan, he finds work as a security officer at the Duomo. Here, he meets Farah, an Arab girl who pretends to be a student of architecture. Farah’s plan is to pray to an icon of the Virgin Mary in order to place an explosive device with the help of her brother and two accomplices. The terrorists hope to avenge the killing of Farah’s family in a previous unspecified attack. Checco is tasked with guarding the Virgin Mary and immediately falls for Farah, who cannot imagine that the clumsy hipster may turn out to be her greatest foil.

A remote stretch of land. A few isolated houses haphazardly scattered in a flat, desolate landscape. This evanescent tableau is the background for the encounter between Hassan and Mara. Hassan is a Tunisian mechanic. Mara is a young substitute teacher. Giovanni is an aspiring journalist working in Hassan’s body shop. In time, Giovanni becomes more than a mere eyewitness to the affair. Hassan spies on Mara while she sleeps in her isolated house. After initially rejecting him, Mara eventually takes a liking to the Tunisian. But Hassan is not Mara’s only suitor: Giovanni, too, is in love with her. Nicola’s motley crew is adventurous: sweet-natured Salvatore (Briguglia), his hipster ex-TV celeb cousin Rocco (Gassman), and amiable mute Franco (singer Max Gazzè in his screen debut). Tagging along on this adventure is journalist Tropea, played by Giovanna Mezzogiorno (Vincere) who displays her flair for comedy in this charming role. Against the sometimes barren landscapes, these likable characters and their relationships are revealed. Ultimately this is a lyrical, subtle and loving tribute to a little-known part of Italy, punctuated by a wonderful soundtrack of jazzy songs by Papaleo.

Vancouver and British Columbia epitomize Canada’s West Coast, not only in their topography but also in their unique and fascinating character. A sea rich in fish, boundless resources and spaces, cities that top the world’s list in livability, urban centers that currently enjoy their full economic boom. From the Bay of Vancouver, a journey winds across the mountains and the ocean, traveling through a land that reminds the observer of the Garden of Eden. “Canadian West Coast” is a road movie, narrated with the help of Italians living in British Columbia who represent the third largest ethnic group after the Anglo-Saxons and the Chinese.

Letter One articulates an actor/writer ’s struggle with cultural stereotypes in Canadian theatre/film/television. TONY NARDI Tony Nardi is a two-time winner of the Genie Award for Best Actor for his roles in La Sarrasine and My Father’s Angel. In 2010, Nardi made the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television’s 30th Anniversary top 10 list. He has performed in over 50 plays and received numerous awards. His TV credits include Rossini's Ghost, Galileo: On the Shoulders of Giants and Bonanno: A Godfather's Story.
NICK MANCUSO Nick Mancuso is an Italian-Canadian actor. He is a Genie Award winner for Best Actor for his performance in the film Ticket to Heaven. He is probably best known for his role in the film Under Siege and for the TV Series Matrix. He has made countless films and television series, including Maria Chapdelaine, Heartbreakers, Last Train Home, Under Siege 2, Provocateur and Misbegotten.
JERRY CICCORITTI Jerry Ciccoritti is a writer-director best known for the films Trudeau, Lives of The Saints (with Sofia Loren), Paris, France and The Life before This. Ciccoritti won several Genie Awards, including a record number of wins for Best Director (TV). He has directed episodes of The Hitchhiker, Forever Knight, Due South, and Highlander: The Series. He won two awards from the Directors Guild of Canada.
FRANK BORG Frank Borg was a writer/executive story editor for the television series Da Vinci’s Inquest, for which he won two Writer’s Guild Awards. His feature film credits include My Father’s Angel, which won a Leo Award for Best Screenplay, was nominated for a Genie Award, won the Praxis Screenwriting Competition and the National Screen Institute’s First Feature Award.
JIM PURDY Jim recently completed Havana 57, a feature film with Tony Nardi. Jim also made Concrete Angels (1988), Destiny to Order (1990) and Foreign Bodies (1994). Jim wrote and directed a variety of TV series. Most significantly, Jim created all the episodes of CBC’s prime time drama series Home Fires (1980-1983).

The Angela Baldassarre Memorial Award is presented in memory of a gifted Toronto film critic who lost her battle with cancer on November 15, 2007. Angela was an avid film viewer and writer, collecting some of her work in the books The Great Dictators: Interviews With Filmmakers Of Italian Descent and Reel Canadians: Interviews From The Canadian Film World. Angela was also vice-president of the Toronto Film Critics Association. She served on film festival juries in Moscow, C h i c a g o , A m s t e rd a m a n d To ro n t o . S h e w a s o n e o f t h e founding members of L’Altra It alia, an It alian C anadian cultural association that represents the seed from which the Italian Contemporary Film Festival has blossomed.
The Artist Born in Cerqueto (Fano Adriano, Province of Teramo) Silvio Mastrodascio is one of the most prominent Italian Canadian artists. He started as a painter, then moved to sculpture following his father’s woodcarving art. “Notwithstanding his numerous experiences with diverse civilizations, Mastrodascio has never rejected his own roots, and in this sense his art has become a space for a romantic escape from the present… In conclusion, his sculpture is both contemporary and traditional”. (Leo Strozzieri) His works are shown in many important galleries and private collections all over the world.

“Contemporary Italian Cinema: New Directors New Trends?” A Lecture by Professor Anthony Cristiano Professor Anthony Cristiano examines how today’s Italian directors find themselves contending with the legacy of a torturous past and the ravages of a rapidly changing society, its fears, its hopes, the yawning gap between social strata, immigration, economic uncertainty, political turmoil, and crime. In what way can today’s directors be aptly described as auteurs? How can they be seen as visionaries? And how do their works compare with the masterpieces of the past? While Italy is undergoing a cinematic renaissance thanks to mavericks such as Paolo Sorrentino, Matteo Garrone, Nanni Moretti, Emanuele Crialese, and many other internationally-acclaimed and award-winning cineastes, film lovers are benefiting from the works of a plethora of visionaries who present multi-faceted, unvarnished and raw portraits of modern Italy.
