ICFF 3RD EDITION - GOING NATIONAL Welcome to the third edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival. The ICFF emerged from the hopeful confines of the Italian Canadian community to burgeon into a mainstream reality of considerable scale, depth and magnitude. This year we expanded the festival, scheduling simultaneous events in multiple cities: Toronto, Vaughan, Hamilton, Montreal and Quebec City. The ICFF has now evolved into a veritable “National Festival.”

We were able to reach this important milestone thanks to our partnership with the Italian Institute of Culture and the Cinémathèque Québécoise, the Centre Leonardo da Vinci in Montreal, Cinema Le Clap in Quebec City and Cinema Insieme in Hamilton. We are proud of our success; our vision is to guide the ICFF into new heights, while remaining a not-for-profit organization: a unique, independent, fun and exciting place to mark the month of June. ICFF will maintain its headquarters at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. We are truly grateful for a long and fruitful collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival, which has now formalized its commitment by becoming an official partner.

ICFF 2014 will not only be true showcase for Italian and Italianthemed films. It will also amplify the definition of New Italian cinema by bringing to Canada many spectacular films that would otherwise never be screened in North America. Our mission is to provide extraordinary opportunities for artists, filmmakers, producers and distributors to interact and to network. This edition we added a specific film industry day in collaboration with the legendary Pinewood Studios Toronto.

However, we did not forget about the younger generations. ICFF Jr. 2014 has been a celebration of art, education, and entertainment aimed at young audiences aged 9 to 18. Over 3,000 students filled our cinemas, making this a truly special year. We owe the opening of this festival to the encouragement and the enthusiasm that we have felt these past few years from a kind of ‘virtual village’ called “L’ Altra Italia,” a cultural association that has grown exponentially in the past few years. We wish to thank our superb Staff and the many volunteers who ably assist us in all aspects of the Festival. We also want to thank our sponsors and media partners, old and new, who believe in our vision and help us fulfill it. The ICFF Board of Directors and the Board of Advisors deserve tremendous credit for their continuous efforts in guiding the Festival to what it is today. Our deepest gratitude goes to IC Savings, with their unflagging interest in always making the events they are associated with a success, as well as their financial and creative investment. A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR June 10, 2014 I’m sincerely happy to announce a slate of outstanding films for the third edition of the ICFF presented by IC Savings. With three World Premieres, two International Premieres, 13 North American Premieres, four Canadian Premieres, 28 films and 37 shorts representing 7 countries, this year’s Italian Contemporary Film Festival will be one of the most influential showcases for contemporary cinema of Italian origin in the world.
This year’s edition will feature one of the true legends of Italian cinema: Carlo Verdone, who for almost 40 years has written and CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS directed some of the best and most popular comedies in Italy. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Mr. Verdone (who also stars in the recent Oscar® winner The ICFF CO-FOUNDER Great Beauty) will present his latest feature, Sotto Una Buona Stella, which will close the screenings at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Mr. Verdone will receive the ICFF Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long and successful career in cinema. The festival will open with The Best Offer, a romantic mystery written and directed by Oscar® winner Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) starring Geoffrey Rush and Donald Sutherland. I’m also proud that the festival will feature the World Premiere of 2047. Sights of Death, directed by Alessandro Capone, a rare treat for fans of Italian-made science fiction. It stars Stephen Baldwin and Danny Glover, both of whom will grace the red carpet in Toronto. A tantalizing bevy of comedies will be presented this year, including Away From Me, directed by Alessio Maria Federici. The film stars ubiquitous Italian TV and theater personality Enrico Brignano, who will also be a guest of honour. Blame Freud, directed by Paolo Genovese, will be another headliner. It tells the story of a psychoanalyst who is dealing with three patients facing multiple hurdles in their love lives. Genovese, the winner of last year’s Audience Award, will be in attendance, along with the star of the film, Vittoria Puccini. Canadian cinema is also represented this year, with valuable Italian-Canadian shorts, features and documentaries. Writer-director Frank D’Angelo (winner of the ICFF 2013 IC Savings Award for Real Gangsters) has chosen the ICFF as the site of the Canadian Premiere of The Big Fat Stone, in which he also stars. The festival acknowledges the importance of the often-underestimated art of short filmmaking, with thirty-seven shorts, including Cold Feet, The Divide and The Junction (all Canadian productions). The ICFF is proud to provide a platform for short films in order to give them the proper exposure in Canada by screening one short film prior to each feature presentation, as well as a separate “short film program.” An important part of what makes this Festival shine is the fabulous team of programmers, who screen an avalanche of submissions (over 200 this year), selecting only the very best. One of our main tasks is to provide our audience with all the films in Italian or other foreign languages subtitled in English (in Ontario) or in French (in Quebec). This June immerse yourself in this filmic cornucopia that spans the globe and explores the breadth of human experience – beautiful paintings, emotional music, clever thefts, rich brokers, visceral laughter and detailed primers for murder…all courtesy of the ICFF. How could anyone resist?

Sorrentino’s recent prestigious directorial success, winning an Oscar for Best Foreign Film for “La Grande Bellezza,” has given renewed distinction and impetus to Italian cinema, following in the footsteps of Benigni’s own victory in 1999 for “ La Vita e’ Bella.” I am convinced that Toronto’s Italian-Canadians and Italophiles will come in large numbers to this edition of the Festival, eager to appreciate its high quality programming and great cultural relevance. My very best wishes to the ICFF for this commendable and well thought-out initiative.

After bridging Ontario and Quebec in 2013, this year we are happy to celebrate a further expansion of the Festival in both provinces. At the Italian Cultural Institute, we are very proud to see that, on top of la Cinémathèque Québécoise, the ICFF will also be showing films at the Mirella and Lino Saputo theatre, of the Leonardo Da Vinci Center, thus allowing residents of St. Leonard to enjoy a few of the Festival’s films, in a place that is the pride of Montrealers of Italian descent. From June 12 to June 20, the third edition will bloom and bear its fruits, after a year of meticulously planning every detail, reviewing every film, choosing every guest. All this hard work shows with yet another programme richly studded with such diverse productions which all look at the country through different spectacles. A MESSAGE FROM NCIC APRIL 23, 2014 When I was a child, just like many other Italian-Canadian kids in our community, I loved going to the cinema. It opened my eyes to the world. Undoubtedly, film allows us all to see life through the expert eyes of producers, writers and actors alike. It encourages us to question, debate and analyze our world as well as inspire our imagination.

Throughout the 20th century, movies have made significant strides in examining the struggle for personal independence and social equality: from the right to occupy contested lands, to the right to work, to the right to vote. As President of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians, Toronto District (NCIC), I am proud of our role in supporting the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) - the only one of its kind in Canada - preserving and highlighting our Italian heritage, culture and language and giving others the opportunity to appreciate the same. The ICFF merits immense recognition for showcasing contemporary cinema, urging if not provoking, filmmakers and audiences to challenge pre-conceived notions of Italy and Italian-themed issues. It is the age of Imperial Rome. Young Timo, an orphan of Pompeii’s terrible eruption, is adopted by general Chirone and raised in the most famous Gladiators’ Academy in Rome. Unfortunately, Timo is not exactly gladiator material. He just wants to hang out with his friends and avoid his stepfather’s bizarre training sessions at all cost. However, when Timo encounters the lovely Lucilla, he decides to change his life and bring out the valour within himself that was never harnessed before. And as they say in Rome, if “fortune favours the bold” … hard times are awaiting Timo. Roma Imperiale. This is the story of a long journey embarked upon by Yaguine and Fodè, two Guinean teenagers who have written on behalf of all children and young Africans. Their letter is addressed “To their Excellencies the members and leaders of Europe,” asking for help for schools, food and health care. With the letter in their pocket, Yaguine and Fodè hide in the cargo compartment of a plane en route to Brussels. So begins their remarkable journey of hope. This narrative intersects with the story of another trip, this time from Europe to Africa, which occurs ten years later, made by two other teenagers and their soccer ball. SALVATORE QUESTA È LA VITA Marco Brioni, a young elementary school teacher from Rome, is suddenly offered a position in a small Sicilian town. One day, on a bus, he meets Salvatore, an orphan who has lost both his parents, and who lives with his grandmother and his younger sister in a little house by the sea. Salvatore works at the tomato warehouse and catches fish. Living like an adult doesn’t leave him any time for school. So Marco goes to his house to tutor him and the two become inseparable. Salvatore sees Marco as the father he never had and Marco sees Salvatore as the son he does not have. CANADIAN PREMIERE The film is based on the original novel by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio, carved out of a wooden trunk by his ‘father’ Geppetto, magically turns into a boy. During his numerous adventures, Pinocchio runs into quite a bit of trouble. Fortunately, the Blue Fairy helps him extricate from his many mischiefs. Pinocchio is his fifth feature film as a director.

Italy’s diverse regional cultural heritages, histories, traditions, languages, cuisines, make it one of the most interesting, diverse and sought after countries in the world. The Italian Contemporary Film Festival presented by IC Savings has created a section dedicated to the discovery of Italy’s regions through cinema. ICFF Regional Spotlight is also a culinary journey. In many cases, regionally-themed refreshments will be matched to specific films. Some of each region’s most prestigious chefs and sommeliers will accompany us in this journey with exceptional dishes and wines typical of the region in question. ICFF Regional Spotlight is a program developed in collaboration with various Ita-lian Film Commissions and with regional associations, clubs and federations in Canada.

When his wife reveals that she is taking the kids off to a feminist retreat in France, Guido’s life turns upside down and forces him to confront all those things that have limited his art. CANADIAN PREMIERE A television studio is used by day to film a TV series, but in the evenings, the premises are the domain of the employees of a cleaning company, most of them immigrants. One night, the door to the camera store is left open, and Dilip gets a sudden urge to try one out. Gradually, an idea develops: why not use the studio to film video messages that other immigrants can send to their families? PAOLO GENOVESE is an Italian film director. In 1999, along with Luca Miniero, he shot two short films, Piccole cose di valore non quantificabile and Scoperta di Walter, which won numerous national and international awards. In 2001 they directed their first feature film, Incantesimo napoletano, a revised version of the short film of the same name shot in 1998.

IVAN COTRONEO is a successful Italian director, screenwriter and writer. He published four novels and wrote/ collaborated in a number of screenplays for movies as well as for talk shows. The film La kriptonite nella borsa (Kryptonite!) has been adapted from his novel of the same name, written in 2007. The film was screened at the CINE LUMIERE in London, for the second edition of Cinema Made In Italy.

The project is called ARType. It results from the desire of exploring some archetypes of contemporary imaginary as primary elements of human culture seen through the eye of art. Indeed, the neologism the project’s title is inspired to is the combination of art and archetypes, in the belief that the experimental language of video art provides a privileged access to the complexity of anthropological structures in today’s world.

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE Maddalena Sisto’s sketches of Armani, Fiorucci and Ferré’s garments recount 30 years of Italian fashion. Her drawings reflect the influence that fashion had on women and how it was reinterpreted. Using Mad’s work as a visual reference, the famous fashion designers in Milan tell the story of Italian fashion in the golden years of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Mad left 12,000 drawings which will be animated specifically for the film! Maddalena Sisto, soprannominata Mad, illustratrice delle piu’ prestigiose riviste di moda italiane, racconta 30 anni di moda italiana. I suoi disegni riflettono l’influenza che la moda ha avuto sulle donne e come è stata poi reinterpretata. Usando i lavori di Mad come referenza visuale, la famosa illustratrice milanese ci fa percorrere la storia degli anni d’oro del fashion. Dani is a refugee from Togo who has found sanctuary in Pergine, a small mountain village in Trentino, surviving a long and perilous journey through war-torn Libya. “...AND COUNTING!” LETTER THREE WORLD PREMIERE “...And Counting!” (Letter Three) is a postmortem of Two Letters, and a journey into the present state of theatre, culture (and funding). Forced to fund his Two Letters theatre project, using his entire RRSP account, having hit a wall in the Italian-Canadian community in Toronto (community leaders and media) and in the mainstream (arts councils and media), and playing to small audiences all over the city of Toronto, while the theatre community and colleagues ran for cover or were missing in action, the actor/ writer recounts his journey in hell and his encounters with those who create that hell, realizing, in the end, that it may be better to work for an arts council in Canada than to be an artist, and that as an artist he may be worth more dead than alive.

Costretto a finanziare il suo progetto teatrale Two Letters attingendo interamente ai propri risparmi pensionistici, avendo battuto la testa contro il muro nel tentativo di sensibilizzare la comunita’ italocanadese di Toronto (sia gli esponenti di spicco che i media) nonche’ del mainstream (enti artistici e media) ed esibendosi davanti a piccoli pubblici in tutta Toronto, mentre la comunita’ teatrale ed i colleghi fuggivano od erano assenti, l’attore/scrittore Nardi racconta il proprio viaggio all’inferno ed i suoi incontri con coloro che hanno creato tale inferno, rendendosi conto che, alla fine, potrebbe essere meglio lavorare per un ente artistico in Canada piuttosto che essere un artista vero e proprio, e che come artista potrebbe essere meglio per lui essere morto piuttosto che vivo.

ANGELA BALDASSARRE AWARD The Angela Baldassarre Memorial Award is presented in memory of a gifted Toronto film critic who lost her battle with cancer on November 15, 2007. Angela was also vice-president of the Toronto Film Critics Association. She served on film festival juries around the world. She was one of the founders of L’ Altra Italia, the Italian Canadian cultural association, which represents the seed from which the Italian Contemporary Film Festival has blossomed.

BEST SHORT FILM The festival provides a platform for Italian and Italian-themed short films to gain visibility in Canada, as we acknowledge the importance of this often underestimated art. A joint film and culinary experience in Vaughan. The evening’s journey begins with food and wine from a specific region of Italy; each regional culinary tradition is influenced by a particular history, culture or environment, which differ from those of other regions in the many different ingredients and cooking methods. After having satisfied our taste buds and savoured the wine, the journey continues with a short film followed by the highlight of the evening, the feature film screening.
OPENING NIGHT GALA The ICFF Opening Night Party will take place at the RitzCarlton Hotel (Toronto), a 5-Diamond award winning hotel, situated in the heart of downtown. The Opening Celebration will feature entertainment, an exquisite culinary experience, and an opportunity to share the passion of cinema. VIP Guest appearances.
CLOSING NIGHT GALA Casa Loma: Canada’s Majestic Castle. Visit Casa Loma and step back in time to a period of European elegance and splendor. Canada’s foremost castle is complete with decorated suites, secret passages, an 800-foot tunnel, towers, stables, and beautiful 5-acre estate gardens. Drop in for the finale of this year’s ICFF. Enjoy an evening of conversation, entertainment and delectable food. There will also be an opportunity to meet the organizers, international guests and supporters.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE TICKETS All sales are final. No refunds, unless a screening or event is cancelled. Seating is guaranteed until 15 minutes before the screening. Latecomers will be admitted at the discretion of ICFF staff. Program is subject to change. Students must present a valid ID to receive the discounted rate. Discounted rates are only available in person at any of our ticket outlet locations. HST and applicable service fees are not included in the listed price.
