ICFF’S 4TH EDITION Welcome to the largest Italian Film Festival outside of Italy. The ICFF boasts the latest contemporary titles, attracting over 25,000 people nationwide every year. This is a rapidly growing event and we are constantly looking for new opportunities to bring Italian cinema to an even larger audience. Last year we brought our programming to Quebec City and Hamilton. In this 4th edition, we are expanding to the city of Mississauga and increasing our presence in Montreal, adding more screenings in more venues.

CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

The ICFF is the culmination of a complex maze of logistical and financial initiatives that would have been unthinkable without the support we received from our partners: TIFF, The Italian Embassy in Ottawa, the Italian Consulates in Toronto and Montreal, the Italian Trade Agency, the Italian Institutes of Culture and L’Altra Italia. We were able to reach this wide audience thanks to the collaboration of some of Canada’s largest movie theatre operators, such as Cineplex, Cinema Guzzo, Cinémathèque Québécoise and Cinema Cartier. Our valued collaboration with the TCSB, YCSB and the Centro Scuola allowed us to organize the ICFF Junior, our ‘sister’ program dedicated to kids under 18. This year’s festival was a celebration of art, education and entertainment aimed at young audiences. Over 3,500 students filled our cinemas, making 3 this a truly special year.

However, the ICFF is not only a showcase of Italian contemporary films. Our mission is to provide extraordinary networking opportunities for artists, filmmakers, producers and distributors. The second annual ICFF Industry Day, an event organized in collaboration with the legendary Pinewood Studios, SIRT (Screen Industries Research and Training Centre - Sheridan) and myETV Media, facilitates interactions between the Italian and Canadian film industries. This year the event will focus on animated films. Our guest speakers will include Vincenzo Nisco (artistic director of Rainbow) and Italian-Canadian producer Andrea Iervolino, an ambassador of Italian cinema in the world.

We are proud of our success; our vision is to guide the ICFF into new heights, while remaining a not-for-profit organization: a unique, independent, fun and exciting place to mark June, the Italian Heritage Month. We wish to thank our superb Staff and the many volunteers who ably assist us in all aspects of the Festival. We also want to thank our sponsors and media partners, old and new, who believe in our vision and help us fulfill it. The ICFF Board of Directors and the Board of Advisors deserve tremendous credit for their continuous efforts in guiding the Festival to what it is today. None of this would matter, however, without the loyal and passionate support of our fans. They are truly the heart and soul of the festival. We therefore reserve a special thank you to all the people who take time out of their busy lives to enjoy a taste of Italy.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR We have endeavored to bring the charm of Italian culture to Canada, magically making the Atlantic Ocean disappear and ensuring that the CN Tower and the Tower of Pisa are separated by nothing more than a handful of rolling hills. This is the image we chose for this year’s ICFF poster, an image that adds an intriguing symbolic meaning to our festival. The magic is ensured by the beauty of contemporary Italian cinema, which continues to enchant and enthrall audiences everywhere. “Movie’ing to Italy” is the catchphrase we are using this year to promote our Festival. It’s the feeling we wish to convey to thousands of people who are kind enough to attend our events.

CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

This edition will begin with a project that I had envisioned and began working on three years ago. Today, thanks to the collaboration of two extraordinary partners, Jesse Wente, the TIFF Bell Lightbox’s director of film programming, and Michael Lettieri a visionary UofT professor, we are honoured to welcome Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi to Toronto for their first ever film retrospective.

Running from June 4 until June 9, it features several in-person events, including an onstage conversation about their lives and creative collaboration. This extraordinary event is being co-presented with TIFF. This exceptional couple has crafted magnificent 5 films that are uniquely essential to understanding modern Italian cinema. This retrospective beautifully reflects Italian culture and weaves together romance, tragedy and comedy in a heartfelt and epic manner. Starting June 11, the Festival slate will start with a diverse collection of new and returning voices all linked by Italian culture. This year’s films take a creative and multicultural approach to current events and contemporary issues. The festival opens with a gala at Roy Thomson Hall and closes with a celebration at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel. ICFF’s opening film is the international premiere of the drama L’Oriana, starring Vittoria Puccini as famed journalist Oriana Fallaci. The festival closes with the comedy Sei mai stata sulla luna? by Paolo Genovese on June 19 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox at 7:30 p.m. Italy’s Sabrina Impacciatore (The Passion of the Christ, The Last Kiss) will present the film. A tantalizing bevy of comedies will be presented this year, including Andiamo a quel Paese, directed by the film’s stars, ubiquitous Italian TV and theater personalities Salvatore Ficarra and Valentino Picone, who will also be our guests of honour. Io e la Giulia, directed by Edoardo Leo (also attending), will be another headliner. We’re also excited to shine a spotlight on features and shorts by Italian Canadian filmmakers. Sergio Navarretta will present as a sneak peek of his newest feature film, The Colossal Failure of the Modern Relationship, starring Enrico Colantoni. Writer-director Frank D’Angelo has chosen the ICFF as the site of the Canadian Premiere of No Deposit. An important part of what makes this Festival shine is the fabulous team of programmers, who screen an avalanche of submissions (over 250 this year), selecting only the very best. Finally, we hope that the ICFF inspires you the same way it has so many of us. So please browse around the program and prepare to be startled, delighted, and moved by some of the best films out there.

With this directive in mind and with the ever-growing critical acclaim for Italian feature films at Cannes and Berlin, as well as the recognition of the strength of Italian documentaries this year, it is with great pleasure that the Italian Trade Commission sponsors the 4th annual Italian Contemporary Film Festival [ICFF]. This is a festival that started out small, four years ago, and now, due to audience support, is growing stronger, spreading beyond the ItaloCanadian community and now running a full 9 days with screenings in Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Montreal and Quebec City . The organizers and staff of ICFF show a strong commitment to Italian contemporary audiovisual production bringing in important Italian filmmakers and talent presenting a collection of feature films, documentaries and shorts. We commend this initiative and trust that this year will introduce us to new Italian contemporary film gems. It is with great pleasure that I add my voice of support to this incredible initiative now in its fourth year. Welcome everyone to the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (“ICFF”) celebrating Italian life through cinema. Once the dream of two men, Cristiano De Florentiis and Maurizio Magnifico, through hard work and passion, they have built one of the crown jewels of the month of June, being Italian Heritage Month, when we as Canadians of Italian heritage share with other communities our rich culture and heritage. If we begin with the premise that to preserve one’s culture one must speak the language, ICFF provides the perfect vehicle to see, hear and feel Italian expression in every sense of the word. Ingmar Bergman once wrote, “Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.” No matter the origin of one’s culture or heritage, film provides the opportunity to see, touch, taste and smell the soil of modern Italy, its people and cultural trends. This year, in collaboration with TIFF, the ICFF will be hosting a retrospective of the work of Roberto Bengnini and Nicoletta Braschi. A special “Benvenuto” to them for honouring us with their presence this year and reminding us that, “Life is Beautiful”. ITALO BAROCCO Based on a true story, Italo Barocco vividly depicts the life-altering friendship between an extraordinary dog and a lonely child. One day, a good -natured stray dog by the name of Italo wanders into the small Sicilian town of Scicli. Italo’s arrival causes a terrible uproar in the village, everyone there is fiercely opposed to having stray dogs around. Everyone except Meno, a precocious 10 year-old, who is lonely and introverted. Since the passing of this mother, Meno has shut everyone out, including his workaholic father. It will take the unconditional love of a special dog like Italo to force Meno out of his shell, leading him into a series of adventures that will teach him the difference between acting like a grown up and actually becoming one. It is the age of Imperial Rome. Young Timo, an orphan of Pompeii’s terrible eruption, is adopted by general Chirone and raised in the most famous Gladiators’ Academy in Rome. Unfortunately, Timo is not exactly gladiator material. He just wants to hang out with his friends and avoid his stepfather’s bizarre training sessions at all cost. However, when Timo encounters the lovely Lucilla, he decides to change his life and bring out the valour within himself that was never harnessed before. YELLOWBIRD Yellowbird lives in the ruins of an old house. He lacks the confidence to leave his home, no matter how much Bug, his labybird friend, tries to convince him to go out into the world. Attempts to toughen him up have had little success, so Bug seizes an opportunity that leavesYellowbird unexpectedly finding himself the new leader of the flock that is migrating to Africa. IL MIO AMICO NANUK At the icy outermost reaches of northern Canada, 14-year-old Luke learns that a polar bear cub has been separated from its mother. To reunite them, Luke enlists the aid of Muktuk, an Inuit guide who knows the unforgiving polar bear territory very well. The pair must learn to defend themselves and the cub from all the perils of this gleaming, snowbound wilderness, to get Nanuk home safely. From the Alpine heights of northern Italy to the sun-drenched island of Sicily, each of Italy’s 20 regions has something unique and wonderful to offer. Italy’s diverse regional cultural heritages, histories, traditions, languages, cuisines, make it one of the most interesting, diverse and sought after countries in the world. The Italian Contemporary Film Festival has created a section dedicated to the discovery of Italy’s regions through cinema. ICFF Regional Spotlight is also a culinary journey. In many cases, regionally-themed refreshments will be matched to specific films. Some of each region’s most prestigious chefs and sommeliers will accompany us in this journey with exceptional dishes and wines typical of the region in question. L’ORIANA This biopic follows the life of Oriana Fallaci, the Italian journalist and author, and her insights as a front-line reporter and would-be mother. In one of her last trips back to Italy, Oriana decides to re-organize her journalistic and photographic materials stored for years in the old family home in the Tuscan countryside. To do so she contacts the University of Florence, which sends an aspiring journalist named Lisa. Lisa is well-intentioned but has no specific skills. A GOLDEN BOY UN RAGAZZO D’ORO Davide Bias is a young copywriter who moves to Rome in the wake of his father’s death. His father was a screenwriter whom Davide had a tumultuous relationship with. Regardless, Davide decides to leave his job and girlfriend in Milan and moves in with his mother in Rome, where he meets a publisher who wants to release his father’s autobiography. Intrigued by the idea of getting to know him better, and also getting better acquainted with the beautiful publisher, Ludovica, Davide decides to write the autobiography himself. In trying to channel his father’s spirt through his words, he also dives into professional frustration and an impossible love for a married woman. THE CHAIR OF HAPPINESS LA SEDIA DELLA FELICITÀ Bruna De Angelis is a recently-single beautician struggling to make ends meet. Dino Morosi is the tattoo artist next door who sweeps her off her feet. The two fall in love while looking for a valuable treasure hidden in a mysterious upholstered chair. ITALY IN A DAY UN GIORNO DA ITALIANI Italy in a Day is a Ridley Scott idea brought to life by Gabriele Salvatores. Italians from all over Italy were asked to submit videos or images captured on smartphone, still cameras, camcorders, etc, of their 24-hour day on October 26th, 2013. Wishes, dreams, fears, reflections, and views from balcony windows were sent in because that is what each individual filmmaker found interesting to them. For Italians, this became an emotional diary of fragile moments, of happy moments and moments of distress. It is a “Social Movie” in the perspective of the everyday person, with a true sense of passion and respect for the simple everyday life. Italy in a Day è l’edizione italiana, curata da Gabriele Salvatores, di un progetto di Ridley Scott. Hanno chiesto agli italiani di inviare dei video realizzati con qualsiasi mezzo (telecamere, smart phone, fotocamere...) da girare durante le 24 ore del 26 ottobre 2013. Desideri, sogni, paure, riflessioni, qualsiasi cosa considerata importante che accadeva quel giorno o anche, semplicemente, quello che si vedeva dalla finestra di casa. Per gli italiani è un diario emotivo, una confessione laica, la voglia di condividere i propri sentimenti attraverso le immagini. MAFIA & TOMATOES LA NOSTRA TERRA Planting tomatoes may seem like a safe activity, but not when it is conducted on land that has been confiscated by the state due to Mafia activity. This land belongs to the local Mafioso Nicola Sansone and is assigned to a group of amateur farmers. Although they are not professionals, they begin farming the boycotted land. When they find themselves needing help, they are sent Filippo who has tried to combat the mafia for many years. The only problem is, he has only done so behind a screen. Through his desire to protect the land and the people on it, he will have to face his fears. With the help of Rossana, they work towards their ultimate goal. Nicola Sansone è proprietario di un podere confiscato dallo Stato e assegnato ad una cooperativa che però non riesce - per questioni burocratiche e sottili boicottaggi - ad avviare l’attività. Per questa ragione i soci scrivono a un’associazione esperta di beni confiscati alle mafie. In loro aiuto viene mandato Filippo, un uomo che da anni combatte la mafia da un ufficio, e quindi impreparato ad affrontare la questione ‘sul campo’. Numerosi sono gli ostacoli che Filippo incontra e le paure che deve superare, e spesso deve resistere all’impulso di mollare tutto: lo trattengono il senso del dovere, le strane dinamiche di questa cooperativa di insolite persone cui inizia ad affezionarsi, ed anche Rossana, la bella e determinata ragazza che ha dato il via a tutta l’iniziativa.

MY ITALIAN SECRET THE FORGOTTEN HEROES This is the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other brave Italians who helped rescue Jews, partisans and refugees from extermination in a Nazi-occupied Italy. Bartali worked within a secret network alongside thousands of others who risked their lives to save those being persecuted from capture and death. While Europe was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of 6 million Jews, more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived with the help of this secret network. Bartali, like most of the rescuers, never sought recognition or reward for his efforts and few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue. Questa è la storia di Gino Bartali, un idolo nel mondo del ciclismo, e di altri italiani coraggiosi che hanno aiutato a salvare ebrei, partigiani e rifugiati dallo sterminio nell’Italia occupata dai nazisti. Insieme a migliaia d’italiani, Bartali formò una rete segreta il cui scopo era il salvataggio di coloro che rischiavano incarcerazione, oppressione e morte. ANDIAMO A QUEL PAESE Salvo and Valentino are two friends who have recently become unemployed while living in Palermo. They decide to leave the big city and make a new start for themselves in their small hometown of Monteforte, Sicily, where the cost of living is much more affordable. But initially, this small-town seems less than promising for these two broke friends. A place which once supported a lucrative orange trade is now in an economic depression. Inhabited mostly by elderly residents, the pair feel out of place and unable to find work or make any real money. That is, until Salvo and Valentino discover how to turn a profit from the sizable pensions these old people collect.

Salvo e Valentino, sono due amici di vecchia data che, rimasti disoccupati, abbandonano la grande città per rifugiarsi nel piccolo paese d’origine, Monteforte, in Sicilia, dove la vita è meno cara ed è più facile tirare avanti. L’impatto con la nuova realtà non risulterà per nulla facile, soprattutto per Salvo, abituato alla città. I due si ritroveranno a vivere in un contesto diverso da quello che si erano immaginati: un paese in crisi economica, pieno di anziani, da cui però è impossibile non poter trarne beneficio. Ogni anziano rappresenta una pensione, un bel bottino per i due disoccupati che tentano così di sbarcare il lunario.

The story of 19th century Italian poet, Giacomo Leopardi, who travels to Rome and Florence against his parents’ wishes for him to be part of his native Recanati high society. Initially stifled by his overbearing father, Leopardi writes his first works exploring the human condition and the insatiability of happiness before finally embarking on his journey. Unfortunately, Giacomo feels let down by his experiences and becomes entangled in a love triangle between his friend Antonio Ranieri and Countess Fanny Targioni Tozzetti. He and Antonio move to Naples and settle in a villa at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. However, a cholera outbreak leads Leopardi into a crippling physical decline and results in his eventual death.

OPERATION REMEMBRANCE PIAZZA PETAWAWA Operation Remembrance has as its mission to honour the Canadian soldiers who died in Italy during the Second World War by initiating and developing remembrance activities and resources that bridge our military and educational communities and create heightened awareness about the role of the Canadians in Italy. Initiatives launched in recent years to address the lack of awareness among Canadians and Italians will be discussed through video materials recorder in Pontecorvo and several cities of Sicily (Italy). Following the debate: Piazza Petawawa: The Paradox, Canada, 2015, directed by Rino Noto. On June 10, 1940, Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced the detainment and internment of Italian-Canadians considered a threat to the safety of our country. Under the guidelines of the War Measures Act, the RCMP were given freedom to arrest any person with ties to an Axis nation without proof of threat, disloyalty, or subversion to our government. Out of 150,000 immigrated and Canadian born Italian-Canadians, 30,000 were listed as â€œenemy aliensâ€? and over 700 were interned in camps. Some interned men lost sons fighting in the war, others enlisted in the war for Canada once released.

GOOD TIME FOR A CHANGE Good Time for a Change is an ironic documentary showing the experience of Danilo, a “wanna-be” Italian immigrant to Canada. The documentary shows all the different phases of the migrant experience. The movie explores the troubled condition of life in contemporary Italy, which pushed the protagonist to make such a life-changing decision. While traveling through Ontario, he will finally understand labour and identity in its global dimension, while looking for a personal alternative to the dominant neoliberal social landscape. Good Time for a Change è un ironico documentario d’inchiesta che racconta l’esperienza di Danilo, un aspirante migrante italiano in Canada. Il documentario illustra dall’interno ed in toni divertiti tutte le fasi dell’esperienza migrante. 9 X 10 NOVANTA Istituto Luce turned ninety in 2014, and to celebrate its anniversary some of the most acclaimed rising filmmakers in Italy were invited to make a small film. Each had the job of selecting ten minutes of footage from the archives. The film footage speaks of the outbreak of war, implorations of peace, landscapes, lost realities, miracles, superstitions and dreams. It’s a weave of themes: a diverse picture with one common thread that contains images from the Archives. This is not the Italy in history books, but Italy as it is (or isn’t) today, seen through sequences often filmed when our nine directors weren’t even born. This is a collection of present-day Italy through images from its past. Il film, realizzato dal regista e veterano Leonardo Tiberi in occasione del Centenario della I Guerra Mondiale e dei 90 anni dell’Istituto Luce Cinecittà, narra le vicende dei milioni di giovani coinvolti in quel tragico evento. Fango e Gloria, oltre a contenere una parte di fiction, si avvale di materiali di repertorio dell’Archivio Storico Luce risalenti al secolo scorso e sottoposti a procedimenti di colorazione e di sonorizzazione per renderne la fruizione ancora più suggestiva e inedita. Una vera e propria immersione nella vita dei giovani italiani che hanno sacrificato la propria vita nel primo conflitto mondiale, attraverso le emozioni e le percezioni di tre personaggi, Mario, Agnese ed Emilio.

Charming, gregarious, astute, and shockingly selfconfident, he promises to be everything Freddy is not. Cat and Richard’s brief encounter evolves into an affair. Overwhelmed by her own guilt, however, she breaks it off to make a final, sincere attempt to reignite the flame with Freddy with a romantic trip to wine country. Nothing, however, can prepare Cat for what happens when she finds out Richard – accompanied by his perky, perfect young girlfriend, Amy – is joining them.
