EDITOR’S LETTER
CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR L’ALTRA ITALIA CO-FOUNDER
MAURIZIO MAGNIFICO MANAGING DIRECTOR L’ALTRA ITALIA CO-FOUNDER
This year’s L’Altra Italia poster is full of symbolism. There is Toronto, as represented by a blue jay holding a film strip in its beak, the glamour of a gorgeous woman in a red dress, and a film reel teetering on top of a nest. The meaning of some of these elements can only be revealed by Mimmo Baronello, the skilled Toronto artist who lent his talent for the creation of a colour palette that summarizes our activities. If the promotion of Italian cinema is to continue to play a central role, L’Altra Italia’s programme must include more arts and more sectors. In fact, starting this season, we will organize meetings with professionals, business operators and, most of all, researchers. Within the association we have created the ARIO group (Italian Researchers’ Association of Ontario), with which we will create personal and professional networking opportunities. ARIO works with ISSNAF (Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation), a non-profit organization that was founded by some of the most eminent Italian scientists and researchers in North America, including four Nobel laureates. The Foundation’s mission is to promote scientific, academic and technological cooperation among Italians who operate in North America and the Italian research sector.
CONSUL GENERAL OF ITALY

TORONTO, September 28th, 2015 The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is once again pleased to support L’ Altra Italia, with its intense 2015-16 season, filled with films and events that are sure to please all. We are proud to collaborate with organizations such as L’Altra Italia and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival which successfully promote our cinematic present, never forgetting our glorious past. The Istituto never shuns the opportunity to showcase Italian Cinema: just recently we had the opportunity to collaborate with the Cinematheque on a retrospective of Vittorio De Sica. They screened 22 films of the Neo-Realist master; we hosted a multimedia exhibition thanks to the precious inventory kept at the Cineteca di Bologna. We look forward in continuing to support l’Altra Italia that, with its tireless work, talented team and constant dedication, has managed to create a movie tradition that will surely continue flourish in the years to come.

ABOUT US L’ Altra Italia was founded in 2002 in Toronto. It is a non profit organization dedicated to highlighting the Italian arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between Canada and Italy. Growing from the success of its cinema screenings, the association is now an organization that presents year-round programs. Our initiatives have drawn an outpouring of support from the community, from the Italian institutional organizations and local sponsors. Each year we have grown as a cultural entity and we have initiated more ambitious programs and events. We want to emphasize that L’Altra Italia, although predominantly made up of recent Italian emigrés, is open to all those that have an affinity with Italy and its culture. While enjoying the Canadian lifestyle, our goal is to have the opportunity to find an Italian cultural retreat. The association’s projects, like any other not-for-profit organization, are carried out thanks to the support of its members who have committed their time to volunteer. The Association sees its members as partners who seek new projects, resources and contacts as well as promoters of all its initiatives. In a multicultural and hospitable country such as Canada, where many diverse events occur, L’Altra Italia intends to be a promoter, a catalyst and an amplifier of several events in different sectors: exhibitions, conferences, conventions, seminars, all related to cultural and artistic themes. L’Altra Italia is committed to supporting initiatives such as theatre shows, movie viewings, concerts and any other events or activities that might generate socializing. We want to thank you for the support and enthusiasm that you will bring to this venture. A warm welcome to you all!

ARIO ABOUT US Associazione Ricercatori Italiani in Ontario
CHI SIAMO Associazione Ricercatori Italiani in Ontario
ARIO is a Canadian Chapter of ISSNAF that seeks to promote cultural, professional, academic, and social interactions among Italian researchers, scholars, professionals, and entrepreneurs living in Ontario. Our members work within academic and professional institutions in fields such as the arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, computer science and medicine. ARIO, as a Chapter of ISSNAF, aims at enabling its members to quickly disseminate information among their peers across North America while promoting their scholarly and professional activities. Here members will find the fastest path to connect and converse with their peers, share information, track new data and techniques, advance knowledge within their fields, or simply come into contact with people and expertise from their academic and professional community.
ACTIVITIES ARIO will periodically organize meetings, seminars and workshops to discuss either specific or general topics, in order to reflect the wide spectrum of scholarly interests of its members. The aim of such gatherings is to provide opportunities to all the members and guests to present and discuss the results of their research activities and to stimulate their broad dissemination.

Even psychoanalysts may fall into depression! Marcello is a psychoanalyst and cynical scoundrel. One day he decides to cancel his appointments and stay home. This extreme gesture is not well received by Silvia, Marcello’s secretary, who decides to gather his patients to try, all together, to goad him out of his crisis. On paper, the idea sounds great; however, Silvia ends up enlisting the help of an odd menagerie of characters: a drug dealer suffering from panic attacks, a forty-something mama’s boy, an intrusive nymphomaniac, a sexually-frustrated couple, and a man wracked by anguish over his wife’s infidelity!

The Human Capital begins at the end, as a cyclist is run off the road by an SUV the night before Christmas Eve. As details emerge of the events leading up to the accident, the lives of the privileged and detached Bernaschi family will intertwine in unexpected ways with the Ossolas, who are struggling to keep their comfortable middle-class life. Dino Ossola (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), who is in dire financial straits, eagerly awaits the birth of his twins with his second wife (Valeria Golino). Meanwhile, Dino’s teenage daughter’s relationship with hedge-fund manager Giovanni Bernaschi’s playboy son complicates an already tricky social dance of status, money and ambition.

On Christmas Eve, uncle Remo (Lillo) and uncle Oscar (Greg) are suddenly forced to take care of their 8-year-old nephew, whose parents were wrongly convicted for growing illegal narcotics. The two uncles, who are very different from each other, are inadequate for such a task. A surprise visit by two zealous but bizarre social workers (Francesco Montanari and Riccardo De Filippis) complicates matters for the ‘strange family’. The madcap frolic will ensure a stellar performance by the two uncles. Misunderstandings and hilarious implausible situations make for an unforgettable Christmas.
PRESENTED BY

Frankfurt, 1958. Johann Radmann is a young prosecutor trying to climb the ladder in a major law firm, eager for more important work than his caseload of traffic violations. Prompted by a reporter’s tip, he discovers that certain prominent institutions and branches of government are entangled in a conspiracy to cover up the crimes of Nazis during World War II. Johann works obsessively alongside journalist Thomas Gnielka and Jewish concentration camp survivor Simon Kirsch to uncover the evidence linking thousands of SS soldiers — many of whom now have successful careers in the public service — to the atrocities committed at Auschwitz. As he becomes increasingly invested in his research, Johann begins to wonder if his own family history is as honourable as he once thought. Francoforte, 1958. Marina, which is also the film’s title song, is the story of a young Italian man, about his youth in idyllic Calabria and his struggle to survive in a tough Belgian mining village. It’s the account of a 10-year fight against poverty, social prejudice, cultural bias and an authoritarian but well-meaning father. But most of all, it’s the romantic, compelling and warm story of a young man fulfilling his wildest dreams and winning over the beautiful but unreachable grocer’s daughter.

Tommaso is a successful, respected surgeon who also happens to be conceited, proud and arrogant – and a staunch atheist. However, Tommaso’s pedestal is about to be removed from beneath him when his only son Andrea brings the family together for an entirely unexpected announcement: he wants to become a priest! Tommaso refuses to accept this newfound Catholicism, and is further horrified when his wife Carla and daughter Bianca undertake their own Renaissance-of-sorts. A string of hilarious situations ensues as Tommaso goes undercover to investigate and bring down the charismatic priest Don Pietro who he believes “brainwashed” his son and wreaked havoc on his family. PRESENTED BY

A TAVOLA CON L’ALTRA ITALIA VIAGGIO ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA CUCINA REGIONALE TRA ANTICHI E NUOVI SAPORI
L’ Altra Italia Culinary Events
L’Altra Italia Eventi Culinari
Throughout the 2015-2016 season, we will embark again on the discovery of Italian regional cultures through food and wine.
L’Altra Italia will host regular culinary events of specific regions where food and wine specialties will be introduced in conjunction with poetry, music, history and folklore. We all know and praise “Italian Cuisine” which is just as abstract a concept as “Mediterranean Cuisine.” In fact, in Italy there are several regional culinary traditions that are influenced by a particular history, culture or environment and that differ from each other in the various ingredients and cooking methods. For this reason, we decided to begin our journey towards the discovery of Italian regional cuisines. We will enjoy authentic regional dishes and come to understand and better appreciate the local areas where these great traditions originated.
