TRAILS ADVOCACY + COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Friends of Lawrence Area Trails (FLAT) is a 501c3 nonprofit founded in 2017 to fundraise and advocate for a comprehensive, multi-use trail system in Lawrence. The first goal is to complete the Lawrence Loop, a 24-mile paved trail that will circle the city. Through community and trails events, volunteer and donor parties, social media, press campaigns, community partnerships, and advocacy with government stakeholders, FLAT now has over 2000 members and is spearheading a $300,000 capital campaign to match a KDOT grant.

KAW PAVILION AT PRAIRIE BLOCK
The Kaw Valley Native Plant Coalition maintains this native perennial garden next to Kaw Pavilion. Phase 2 of Prairie Block will be a prairie restoration on-site along Burroughs Creek and the Lawrence Loop to reduce polluted stormwater runoff, erosion, and flooding in the Kaw Valley watershed. Project partner Friends of the Kaw has taken charge of this initiative. Prairie Block will be the first green infrastructure test project in Lawrence and will be maintained by the Parks and Rec.
Community planting party: 33 organic fruit trees were planted in a first-ever partnership between the Lawrence Fruit Tree Project and the Parks and Rec.
The students tabled at the Kaw Valley Seed Fair to get early input and ideas from the community.

RED LANTERN
Red Lantern is a site-specific installation by Cao Perrot Studio that honors the immigrants who built the Transcontinental Railroad. Nearby San Francisco’s population is 36% Asian American, many of whom are the descendents of these early manual laborers. The surrounding vineyards are worked today mostly by Latinx immigrants. A wall-themed installation in the garden recognizes their current struggles.

design intent A firm believer in the wiles and wonder of DUALITY myself, I was delighted to read the wonderful Navajo legend of Black God, who created the Pleiades constellation, among many others. Black God distributed thousands of stars from his fawnskin pouch in an orderly manner, naming each constellation as he placed them in the heavens. When Coyote Trickster saw what was happening and felt left out, he grabbed the bag of stars and threw them into the air, blowing as hard as he could. Coyote’s stars scattered nameless far and wide, except for one star which he carefully placed in the sky. To this day, it bears the name Coyote Star.
community
To the Navajo people, the Pleiades shining in the winter night sky thanks to Black God represent the order and harmony of the universe, while the millions of nameless stars scattered by Coyote signify the chaos that is also a part of life. In designing a student center for the Native American community at UNM, I attempted to address the nature of duality as it might apply to being a young indigenous person living in a mostly non-indigenous world. Formal and conceptual design ideas, as well as programming inventions, seek to explore the dual nature of reality and hold its opposing forces in creative tension.

NATIVE AMERICAN PROJECT CONCEPT DESIGNS
The National Museum of the American Indian was a global competition for the design of immersive exhibit environments in Washington, D.C. Eisterhold Associates in Kansas City, MO complied with the competition brief stressing a revisionist Native American perspective for exhibits that empowered Native people to tell their own stories about cultural legacy.
Eisterhold Associates, KCMO + Univ. of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM
The Native American Student Center on the UNM campus was conceived to support First Nations students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. Research for this studio included interviewing American Indian students on campus about their needs and talking informally with Native families at Tesuque Pueblo.

RUSTLING RIDGE VINEYARDS
Rustling Ridge Vineyards is a vineyard development company in the Sonoma Wine Country. This project consisted of designing an office space for management and support staff, and a 2,500sf shop build-out for equipment and tool storage, a large workshop, and an employee breakroom from a 1940s turkey barn. Though not LEED-certified, the project was designed to meet LEED Silver standards.

The goal of the AMD Open Architecture Challenge: Digital Inclusion Competition was to bridge the digital divide for three communities in the developing world. Through a global design competition, a winning design was chosen for one community in each continent. The resulting sustainable, multi-purpose, low-cost facilities empowered communites with the educational, social and economic opportunities digital access can create.

As a fifth-generation Kansan, the campaign helped shape my values, gave me a deep sense of place and preserved an endangered ecosystem for future generations. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve opened in 1996.
Flint Hills KS
In grade school, I participated in the citizens’ campaign “Save the Tallgrass Prairie” for many years. My role as a tallgrass prairie activist included letter-writing campaigns to government officials, fundraising drives and public outreach tabling at the mall and at school.
TALLGRASS PRAIRIE NATIONAL PRESERVE
The tallgrass prairie ecosystem once covered 170 million acres of the central North American continent. Boasting grasses over 15’ tall and an interconnected root system equally as deep, it was home to nomadic indigenous peoples and the native bison for thousands of years. Over-farming and over-grazing reduced its area by 98% in less than 100 years.
