K… so when I learned the next issue of Suwanee Magazine would be dedicated to “Fitness,” I began thinking of how I could tie the Suwanee Business Alliance in with the focus. That’s when I realized the best thing about the SBA is that everybody and every business “Fits.” (How’s that for a play on words?)

When I sat and thought about it, nothing is truer. Whether you’re a big national bank or home-based, one-person massage therapist, a ten member CPA firm or mayor of Suwanee, of our 230+ members we seem to “fit” everyone – and not just in Suwanee, but even companies from Buford, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill, Braselton, Norcross, Dunwoody, Winder, Oakwood, Atlanta, Snellville, and just about any city or town around the Atlanta area.

Why does the SBA attract so many different people and companies from both near and far? The answer is because we “fit.” We’re like that favorite pair of old jeans or those comfy slippers. We may have a few loose stitches (and we’ve been accused of that a lot) or may not be as shiny as a new pair of Steve Madden shoes, but we’re easy to enjoy.

When my wife and I moved to Suwanee four years ago, someone suggested I visit an SBA meeting. The last thing I wanted to join was anther boring network group where everyone was selling everyone or looking for a job, and where no business ever really happens, and where you seldom meet anyone you’d invite to a party.

But I visited a meeting and found that I was wrong and joined on the spot. Within a year I met my CPA, hairstylist, dentist, car wash, financial planner, five favorite local restaurants, our family photographer, pet shop, auto mechanic, eye doctor, printer, painter and banker. And on the receiving end, my little company just completed our 26th landscape project through my SBA friends. Talk about a networking group that really works.

But the very BEST THING about the SBA – is that I’ve met a ton of new real friends and neighbors and we all seem to FIT together - perfectly.

ooking to do something creative?

Perhaps 2012 is a good time to bring out the inner artist in you.

Wonder Colors Art Studio opened in Suwanee January 2010 and offers a variety of classes, programs and events for all ages.

William Parker and Mary Wall, owners of the art studio, said it doesn’t matter whether it’s a preschool class or an adult class; each student is encouraged to find his or her unique talent through the lessons taught.

Wall, who graduated in May 2010 from the Savannah College of Art and Design, is the art instructor at the studio.

She said in each art class, students always start with a pencil to sketch out their drawing first and then use whatever medium they are working with. In the classes, students learn about art from the basics to techniques like shadings, tones and colors.

“Students have to do the work themselves,” Wall said. “We encourage

artist them to take the techniques as far as they want to go with it. I will show them step by step how to do whatever technique we’re learning, but it’s up to them to put in the creativity and take it the extra step if they want to.”

In each class, Wall covers things such as vocabulary, materials, mixing colors and how to apply them. Classes also include different techniques of art, both traditional and nontraditional.

Wall added that the classes keep each student challenged and each work of art is unique and one-of-a-kind.

Parker said they have been lucky in that most of the students are returning students.

“Anyone who has tried us has pretty much stayed with us,” he said. “The kids are great. Our biggest challenge is just getting people to try it out, but once they do it’s no effort because she (Mary) does

such a good job and the kids that are already here are fun to be with.”

In addition to art classes, the studio offers an after school program that includes an art class and homework help.

Parker said it’s the student’s “home away from home.”

“It takes a load off the parents too because the (home) work is getting done,” he said adding that when parents come to pick up their child, they don’t have to be worried about the homework and everyone can enjoy the evening.

The classes and the after school program are limited to about 10 students.

They follow the Gwinnett County School calendar, and in the summer, they offer summer camps.

The studio also welcomes special events such as birthday parties and “Friends night out.” ■

fter opening January 4, 2007, Hairllucinations celebrates five years at Town Center.

Jaime Corbin and Audrey Wood, owners of the salon, said that after being in Suwanee for 16 years the community feels more like a family to them and moving to Town Center has really enhanced their community involvement.

Wood is a native of Suwanee and said she has seen all the changes with the growth of the city.

“The city of Suwanee has done a superior job of dealing with the challenges that a community faces when population rises,” Wood said.

Both agree that the residents have a strong bond for their community and they feel blessed to be located in the heart of Suwanee where they are a part of that bond.

“I couldn't have envisioned a better place to open our salon but right here in Town Center,” Corbin said. “The past five years have been remarkable, and we look forward to many more years here in Suwanee.”

Reddy said he first learned about the new, cutting edge glasses at the Southeastern Conference of Optometry held annually in February or March in Atlanta, and he knew it was definitely something he was interested in offering to his patients.

The eyewear comes complete with a charging station, and the full charge typically lasts two to three days.

Currently there are 39 frames to choose from and most are unisex. They include high index, high optical lens, high quality anti-reflective coating and come in almost all conceivable power ranges.

A normal eye exam is required and it takes about 10 working days to two weeks to get the new eyewear.

The cost is $1,495 and because it’s a new product not all insurance companies cover them at this time.

onald Perry, MD pokes his head out of one of the exam rooms and lets out a whistle. “Ruckus,” he yells while a 4-year-old boy is resisting an exam. Perry’s secret weapon is on his way from the office.

Ruckus, a long-haired, brown field spaniel who meets and greets the young patient with a wagging tail and a warm fuzzy nose wearing a therapy dog vest that says “Pet Me” and “Will Give Puppy Kisses” is the Perry’s therapy dog and the ultimate distraction.

While the child focuses on Ruckus, the doctor quickly performs the exam and it’s a win/win situation for all involved – both child and parent relax. Perry accomplishes his goal and Ruckus enjoys being the center of attention.

“He also doubles as low-tech security,” Ronald Perry jokes.

When Perry, an emergency room physician, and his wife, Tara Perry, DMD, a family dentist, decided to open their practices in Suwanee where they share a waiting room at their offices in Suwanee Station, they never knew their best asset would be the family dog.

“We have entire families who come to our office because of Ruckus,” Perry said.

“Children request him as soon as they enter the lobby. Both children and adults are vulnerable when they don’t feel well or are scared. Ruckus tries - Ronald Perry, MD to give them a more positive experience.

So whether we are cutting a cast off, placing sutures, or placing a filling, Ruckus is here to take the edge off your day.”

Ruckus started pulling double-duty a year ago when Tara Perry opened her dental practice. She whistles for Ruckus when a patient is about to receive a dental injection and Ruckus dutifully places his head on the patient’s lap while waiting for scratches behind his ears.

“My patients love the fact we have a dog,” Tara Perry said. “I think it makes their doctor and dentist visits feel more down-toearth. We are truly a family business. Besides, Ruckus whines if we go to work without him.”

And after three and a half years in Suwanee, Ruckus has gained some notoriety around the city. When Ronald Perry was honored by the city of Suwanee for his community service contributions, Ruckus was also invited to the ceremony by the city council where he stood beside Perry while the mayor of Suwanee presented his award.

Both doctors are from Georgia and reside in Gainesville with their young son.

Hope Fashion Show continues the fight for a cure for cancer

erseverance could perhaps be the key when it comes to finding a cure for cancer.

Through that perseverance, many great strides have already been made, but the search for a cure continues and that takes, among other things, money and awareness.

Suwanee resident Susan Canoll is not about to give up on either count.

Canoll is part of the Women’s Auxiliary Group that continues the fight for a cure with the annual Hope Fashion Show, and Canoll will once again serve as cochair along with Melody Saputo for the upcoming event planned for March 12 at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead.

The fashion show is funded solely through donations. Canoll said it’s the local support that makes it so much fun to coordinate, plan and hold the event. And the administrative costs are minimal which means more money goes toward the cause.

This year for the 21st Hope Fashion show, entitled “Coming of Age,” the presenting fashion sponsor will be Belk and sharing Master of Ceremony duties will be Ted Hall and Paul Ossmann.

The highlight of the event will include cancer survivors taking the runway, and there will also be a silent auction with everything from pink items such as the pink hope rocking chair to children’s items.

Canoll said she is passionate about seeing a cure for breast cancer in her lifetime.

“It inspires people to talk about it, to bring about awareness and to find a cure,” she said.

Menu items include a variety of starters such as Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes or Spanish Styled Ribs, soups, salads, entrees and desserts.

Along with serving food, the restaurant and lounge is a venue for live music and dancing providing intimate seating with high caliber entertainment including blues bands, swing bands, jazz bands and more.

uwanee resident Tamika Tanner and owner of Gimme Some Suga Bakery Bar in Town Center is one busy lady. Not only is she working to bring sweet tasting bakery treats to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth, but she is also an actress, a mother and busy planning her June wedding.

While visiting Suwanee, Tanner said she fell in love and moved to the city about three years ago. After not finding a bakery to satisfy her own sweet tooth, she saw a need and opened Gimme Some Suga Bakery Bar in December 2010.

The bakery recently celebrated its one year anniversary.

Since opening she said area residents have welcomed the sweet shop.

“They (the residents) love it,” she said. “There are so many people who call and thank us for opening.” And Tanner added that she loves being in the heart of Suwanee in Town Center and across from the park. Tanner said they are continually creating and bringing customers new sweet treats such as the popular cake pops and are currently working on a layered cheesecake.

As an actress, her busy travel schedule makes it necessary for her to operate her bakery from afar, and thanks to the Internet, she is able to stay on top of things no matter where her acting takes her.

In March 2010, Tanner became engaged to NFL player Chauncey Davis.

Originally the June 2012 nuptials were set to take place in Atlanta, but the venue has changed now that Davis is playing for the Chicago Bears and they plan to wed in Chicago.

“We’re very excited,” Tanner said speaking of their upcoming wedding but adding that the planning has been a little more challenging with the change in venue. However, Tanner also said she has been planning her wedding since she was 2 years old and has a lot of help from her wedding planner, Akeem Clayton of Atlanta.

“He knows my style and my schedule,” she said, “and that helps.”

With a wedding in her future, Tanner was eyed by the producers of The Learning Channel’s “Say Yes to the Dress.”

When they first contacted her, Tanner admitted she was a bit hesitant to do the show, but after giving it some thought she decided not only would it be fun, but it would also be a great way for her customers to get to know her.

The episode featuring Tanner originally aired on TLC Nov. 4, but the episode continues to be repeated on TLC. Even though Davis is now playing for the Bears, Tanner, Davis, their 4-year-old son Chauncey Davis Jr., and Davis’ cousin, Dominique Davis who attends North Gwinnett High School, will continue to call Suwanee home Currently, Tanner is headed back on the road for eight weeks traveling the nation with the play. She can also be seen in an upcoming television movie, “A Cross to Bear.”

Chipotle Lime Chicken Tacos Ingredients:

1 whole chicken for roasting 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, divided 2 tablespoons light sour cream 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon chipotle chilies in adobo sauce 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

Instructions: 1. Pre Heat oven to 350 degrees, season chicken with salt, pepper and place in oven for 20-30 minutes until chicken is 165 degrees. Let chicken rest for 10-15 minutes.

2. When chicken has cooled pull chicken off bone and place in bowl with cilantro, garlic, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, and chipotle peppers. Toss to incorporate.

3. Slice radish and lettuce and place in serving bowls so your guests can put as little or as much of either item.

4. To Assemble : Place taco shell on plate, spoon chicken mixture onto shell, place 1 table spoon of salsa verde on top of chicken, finish with slices of radish and lettuce and enjoy!

Interview with Suwanee’s New Mayor:

A

s of Jan. 1 Suwanee has a new leader. Suwanee native and longtime Suwanee City Council Member Jimmy Burnette was elected mayor in the Nov. 8, 2011 elections.

“You think you’ve done a good job (with the campaign) and the response from the people that you talk to sounds good and positive, but you don’t know until the final votes are counted,” Burnette said.

Once the ballots were counted, Burnette breathed a sigh of relief. He won with a 66 percent to 34 percent margin and he said he thought that spoke well of the confidence that people have in him and the direction of the city.

“We’ve got a great staff,” he said. “Marty Allen (Suwanee City Manager) and all of his staff have been excellent and we pride ourselves in doing an exceptionally good job and being able to do that and still lower taxes. The key is running a high level of service and keeping it affordable.

I think that’s the challenge to deliver a good value for the tax dollar and I think we’re doing that in Suwanee.”

Burnette said that with his experience, training, commitment and love for the city he felt it was time for him to run for mayor. During the campaign, Burnette said he had a lot of support, especially from his family.

“Everybody is really excited and I could not have done it without them,” he said.

“I think it’s going to be a good four years... but I hope I can do a good job and be effective and keep everything moving in a good direction.”

With a new leader, what can the residents of the city of Suwanee expect in the coming years?

Burnette said his current plans include keeping what’s already in place and moving forward with the I-85 Gateway and the 20/20 Vision the areas of focus. City officials will hold an annual retreat in February where they will discuss goals and set plans for the coming year.

“Each year has to be better than the last. Nick (Masino) and Dave (Williams) had 12 good years, and if I can build on those, we can go from there,” Burnette said. “As long as I’m effective, I would like to stay involved.”

Burnette’s roots in Suwanee run deep as his father who was also a Suwanee native, James Burnette, was also a member of Suwanee City Council for about 32 years. In 1995 when his father decided to step down, Burnette said it was time for him to step up.

“When he (my father) said he was going to retire, I said that’s my time and I qualified for his position and ran unopposed,” he said.

Burnette, following in his father’s footsteps, took his first post as a Suwanee city councilmember in 1996.

Burnette described his father as a quiet and simple man. He died in 2007, but Burnette said if his father had lived to see him as mayor of Suwanee he would’ve been proud and simply told him congratulations. ■

Perhaps it is not surprising that according to the website proactivechange.com, and several others, resolutions concerning weight loss, getting fit and exercise are among the top resolutions made. But proactivechange.com also states that the percentage of people who keep and maintain their resolution decreases over time. After just six months the percentage drops below 50 percent to 46 percent. What makes it so difficult to stick with a workout program and what are some things we can do to help keep motivating and inspiring us to stick with the resolution to “Get Fit.” We had some of the experts in and around Suwanee weigh in on the subject.

Lack of support and no one to hold them accountable is something that Sonya Dubé of Rainbow Pilates said was a factor in not sticking with the resolution.

Donilynn Hodge of B.L.A.S.T. Fitness, brought up the fact that people tend to lose their confidence and motivation when they don’t see or feel changes quickly enough but following a plan is crucial.

John Drummond of the Atlanta Silverbacks added that your exercise and workout routine should be a priority.

“Trying to squeeze exercise or workouts into the day instead of adjusting their schedule to suit workouts will only lead to exercise falling further down the priority list,” Drummond said.

To stick to your resolution to “get fit in 2012” Drummond said to make sure that you start off small and work your way up.

“Trying to do too much too soon only frustrates and discourages people,” he said. “Make your goals achievable and maintainable. Increase your targets gradually. People that get fit and stay fit are more likely to increase self esteem as well as reducing stress levels.”

Palmer said it’s about setting small, attainable goals and improving from week to week such as how many meals were improved upon, how many classes did I attend at the gym this week, did I talk myself out of the fast-food drive-thru?

And Dubé added that if you’re taking a class, like yoga for example, focus on mastering one thing such as a pose.

“Once you find a routine that’s safe and doable for your fitness level, these activities will slowly start to get easier and you’ll start to enjoy yourself more and more – both during your actual workout and, as you become more fit, in your everyday life,” Dubé said.

You’ll also want to add variety to any workout routine. Hodge said it’s also important to keep challenging the body with different exercises and proper nutrition if you want to continue to see improvements.

“Every year people have the same goals to lose weight and to get fit,” Hodge said. “If what we did last year didn’t work, why do we continue to try to achieve those goals in the same way?”

Getting fit and staying fit is not just about looking good and feeling good today, it’s about quality of life.

“Leading a healthy lifestyle, hands down has a tremendous positive impact on our quality of life,” Collins said.

“Quality of life is important at any age, but is critical as we get older.”

According to Palmer, in the year 2000, there were 45.6 million people older than 60 years of age and 281.4 million Americans. By year 2030, it’s projected that there will be 92.1 million people older than 60 years of age and 373.5 million Americans.

“With the ever increasing quantity of baby-boomers entering the 60+ age market, it’s imperative that we do everything in our power to improve our overall level of good-health,” Palmer said.

Hodge said without quality of life all you can do is sit on the sidelines and let your body dictate your participation. “Fitness allows each of us to participate fully in all that life has to offer,” she said. So get in the game and you take control.” ■

Pierce’s Corner sold to developer Parker and residents celebrate area parks

Suwanee’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) sold one of the oldest commercial buildings along Main Street to Deming LLC. Deming acquired a 50-year lease purchase on the approximately 6,000-squarefoot, two-story Pierce’s Corner building, which was constructed in 1910.

Vacant for several years, Pierce’s Corner, located at 597 Main Street, was most recently an antique shop. Throughout its 100-year history, the building also has served as a general store, cotton gin, grocery store, dentist office, and silent movie theater. Late last year, the DDA issued a request for proposals for Pierce’s Corner that would serve as a catalyst for future growth and vitality in historic Old Town.

The Deming proposal was one of 11 received earlier this year through that process. As part of its three-phase plan, Deming will first remodel the main Pierce’s Corner building. Design for renovations is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2012 and will include techniques designed to achieve LEED certification, such as providing parking for bicycles and fuel-efficient vehicles, collecting rainwater for landscaping and sanitary uses, adding a green roof, using solar panels, and sourcing building materials locally whenever possible. Future phases include potential new construction and residential uses. Deming plans to have its offices on a portion of the building’s top floor, leasing additional business incubator space on the second floor and rehabilitating the bottom floor to suit a future retail/ commercial tenant’s needs, which may include a restaurant use.

Nov. 5 area residents headed out to area parks to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the bond referendum vote that made possible Suwanee’s new parks and acquisition of approximately 350 acres of open space. It was a progressive dinner-format where area residents took part in back-to-back “courses” or activities at the various parks. For the first time ever, there was fishing (for one day only!) at Sims Lake Park.

Festivities ended with a free concert at Town Center Park featuring three hometown crooners, Andy Velo, Jordan Humphrey, and Clark King.

Sunday alcohol sales referendum passes

Contractor approved for Suwanee Police Substation

Suwanee City Council has approved a contract with Hogan Construction Group of Norcross for construction of a new 7,100-squarefoot police substation and training facility at 2996 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in the Suwanee Gateway area. Work is expected to begin on the substation by the end of December or early January.

Construction was approved at a maximum cost of a little more than $1.6 million; the anticipated total project cost is approximately $1.99 million.

The project is funded primarily through SPLOST funds.

Designed by Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates, the facility will provide an enhanced police presence in the Suwanee Gateway and provide class space for regional police training and indoor firearms practice. A one-story facility, the building features clean lines in brick and a lofty, glazed entrance.

“Placing a police substation in the heavily commercial, heavily traveled Suwanee Gateway area serves several purposes,” says City Manager Marty Allen. “Most importantly, it serves an operational need to provide ongoing training opportunities for our police personnel, reducing the need for them to travel to other jurisdictions for such training.”

Construction is expected to require approximately eight months.

Suwanee voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that will allow alcohol package sales by retailers on Sundays. The vote was 1,023 in favor and 341 opposed.

Santa Claus ushers in the holiday season

Santa Claus made his annual visit to Suwanee arriving via his tractorpulled sleigh to magically light the red caboose on Main Street on Friday, December 2 while young and old waited anxiously for Santa’s arrival to usher in the holiday season.

Old Town Holiday Festival and Caboose Lighting festivities included performances of favorite holiday tunes from choruses from Level Creek, Riverside, Roberts, and Suwanee elementary schools. Area residents sipped hot chocolate and munched on cookies, and s’mores. Children shared their wish list with Santa at the Burnette-Rogers Pavilion.

A

s children, we inherit a lot from our parents thanks to genetics – the color of one’s hair and eyes are just a couple of those things. But we can also inherit more than just the physical attributes.

Suwanee artist Carol van Dyck said that her love for art and painting came from her own mother. She explained that her mother, Betty Jean Palmer, was an artist, and while growing up, art was always around her in the way of art supplies and art books, and van Dyck always felt that art was something she might be interested in pursuing.

It wasn’t until college that van Dyck began to appreciate the seeds of inspiration planted by her early exposure to art, and during college, van Dyck embraced her appreciation and talent and earned her bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois.

Since then, van Dyck has spent more than 30 years creating art in a variety of mediums, and it was while hiking that van Dyck was also inspired to incorporate her love of hiking and the outdoors in many of her paintings.

She said living in Suwanee has had a positive impact on her art. Landscapes are van Dyck’s passion, and she pointed out that Suwanee is just a short drive to the mountains and to the beach.

Being an active member of the North Gwinnett Arts Association has been a bright spot for van Dyck and her art.

“Networking and getting to know people who share the love of arts has been wonderful,” she said.

As a member of the NGAA, she participated in the organization’s Plein Air events where the rights to one of her paintings of Suwanee’s community garden were purchased by the board of directors. The painting now hangs in Suwanee City Hall. For more information, go to carolvandyck.com. ■

The money was raised through the North Gwinnett Schools Foundations’ annual Big T’Do Gala in October 2011 and will be used to enhance the quality of education for students in the six North Gwinnett Cluster schools.

Level Creek Elementary named 2011 School of Excellence Recognizing the progress its students have made, the Georgia Department of Education announced today that Level Creek Elementary is a 2011 Georgia School of Excellence. As such, the school is recognized as being among the state’s top schools for the work its teachers and community have done to improve student achievement.

Level Creek Elementary earned recognition in the “Greatest Gains” category. This year’s Georgia Schools of Excellence receives a $1,000 monetary award from Georgia Natural Gas.
