HO DOESN’T love the long days of summer?

I love starting the day with a run when it’s already light at 6:30 a.m. or soaking in the cooler evenings as the sun sets and fireflies begin to appear. With the kids out of school and the pace a little slower, everything just feels more relaxed this time of year.

Our annual Food Issue is always a favorite, and this year is no exception. We asked 11 of the area’s most popular lunch spots to bring their best sandwich to the table — literally — in a head-to-head competition for the title of Best Sandwich. The decision wasn’t easy — every entry brought bold flavors, creative twists, and serious sandwich craftmanship! Turn to p. 38 to see which sandwich our panel of expert judges crowned the winner and meet all the mouthwatering contenders. Warning: You may want to try them all!

Thinking of making a move or helping a loved one find their next chapter? Whether you're apartment hunting, eyeing new construction, or exploring senior living, our  Places to Call Home Guide on p. 18 is your go-to resource. It’s packed with great local options and highlights some of the area's best places to live.

If you're a parent, you know that raising kids is both incredibly rewarding and undeniably challenging. With anxiety levels rising in children, having the right tools to support them has never been more important. On p. 30, Jennifer Wilmoth from Thrive Forward Therapy shares thoughtful, practical tips for supporting kids who are wrestling with anxiety.

At the end of April, Suwanee proudly hosted its first-ever High Line Criterium , part of the prestigious Speed Week cycling series. Joining the ranks of cities like Athens and Greenville, it was an honor to be in such elite company. Turn to p. 34 to meet two local athletes who placed during the races and share what it meant to compete in their hometown.

And finally — who doesn’t love a little good news? Our new  What’s Good, Gwinnett?  section is quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of the magazine. It's full of uplifting stories submitted by readers, celebrating the joy happening all around us. Flip to p. 70 to read some heartwarming highlights, and don’t forget to visit our website to submit your own good news for a future issue!

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the summer — and a great start to the new school year!

OGER GREEN, President and CEO of Green Financial Resources, LLC, has been helping people with their money for more than 35 years. Green Financial Resources (GFR) is an award-winning financial firm that grew out of Roger’s dream to

serve all within his local community, and a business consisting of staff who share the same mentality. To reach as many people as possible, they require no asset minimums, provide no-cost initial consultations, and have offered retirement planning classes at local Gwinnett colleges since 1997. The

advisors at GFR have devoted many hours to meet with thousands to provide no-obligation individualized guidance. Whether you’re seeking help with financial, investment, or retirement income needs, Green Financial Resources is dedicated to putting you first.

Your Financial Future

➤ Planning for your financial future is about more than just how to invest your money. GFR’s advisors serve as a resource when you face questions about Social Security timing, insurance needs, 401(k) allocation, decisions about college funding, major purchases, harvesting from assets in retirement, legacy planning, and the multitude of additional financial questions that may arise. Form a longlasting partnership with GFR and have ongoing access to experienced financial guidance. The Greens are committed to helping clients grow in financial security, stability, and education, and each of them has earned multiple degrees and designations to further expand their ongoing ability to do so.

Commitment to Service

➤ A family endeavor, Roger’s wife, Laura, has served as GFR's COO since 2000, managing all staff, operations, and

service. Laura is supported by Kelly Schmidt, a 25-year employee, along with the rest of their fabulous team. Their overall commitment to service is what transforms individuals into loyal clients. In recent years, two of Roger’s sons, Andrew and Michael Green, joined the firm as advisors, helping to ensure the Green Financial legacy continues. Altogether, these three advisors have around 55 years of experience helping people with a wide range of financial needs — making it evident that GFR’s customers are in exceptional hands. GFR’s vast array of awards has solidified them as one of Gwinnett County’s premier financial firms. They’ve won Gwinnett Magazine's Best of Gwinnett Award for the past 11 years (2014-2024), and the Gwinnett Chamber’s 2024 Small Business Culture Creator Award, as well as their Small Business of the Year Awards in 2008 and 2016. Roger has also been the recipient of a Chamber Public Service Award in 2018, along with other recognition for his work in the community. These are a few of a long history of accolades, representing a broad focus on not only their clients, but also their internal culture and employees, and the overall community in which they serve.

Financial decisions are some of the most challenging decisions we make in life. Many will tend to procrastinate and waste opportunity. Some take action, but miss important considerations that help maximize their planning. GFR has a proven track record of being here to help through life’s ups and downs, and to be your source for financial and

retirement planning, investment decisions, and all those financial questions you will have along the way. ■

Take action now to help improve your financial future, even if all you need is a second opinion. For more information, visit RogerSGreen.com, call Green Financial Resources at 770-931-1414, or visit the office they’ve been in since 1997, located at 3700 Crestwood Pkwy. N.W., Suite 140, in Duluth.

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

What are major trends I should be following right now as a long-term investor?

THERE ARE SEVERAL, BUT THREE SHOULD STAY ON YOUR RADAR. First, the fast-growing 36 trillion dollar deficit created by the federal government is consuming an ever-increasing portion of our national output; both political parties are to blame. The economic path that we have been on since 2008 is headed directly toward national bankruptcy. Moody’s just downgraded America again.1 A Chinese (how ironic) proverb says, “If you do not change your direction, you will end up where you are headed.” This trend can no longer be ignored.

Second, there's the potential of AI. Electricity, women joining the workforce, and computers each produced massive increases in economic growth and thus new tax revenue. Will AI (Artificial Intelligence) live up to its media hype and become the next new economic force — and a major source of increased tax revenue? If the answer is yes, it could solve the deficit problem.

Third, tariffs are now a major element of the global economic universe. Tariffs have always been present, but the U.S. has always been on the losing end. For example, Germany charges a 10% tariff on automobiles imported from America, but we have only been charging them a 2.5% tariff on imported German automobiles.2 This type of tariff imbalance has been crippling our economy, exporting American jobs, and reducing our tax revenues. The Germany example is just one of numerous tariff imbalances that need to be fixed.

How America’s tariff policy plays out might be a game changer for new tax revenue, jobs, economic growth, and perhaps most importantly, regaining control of critical supply chains.3 Not only are trillions in commerce at stake, but also our ability to control our own future. We believe these three trending items will affect all long-term investors. ■

N A MARKET as dynamic and desirable as Suwanee, finding the perfect place to call home isn't just about scrolling through listings online. It's about knowing which neighborhoods are on the rise, which communities align with your lifestyle, and which homes might sell before ever hitting the public market. That’s where having the right REALTOR® — a local expert who knows Suwanee inside and out — makes all the difference.

Buyer representation isn't just helpful — it's essential. A buyer’s agent is your advocate in every step of the process, from the first showing to the final signature. I help clients navigate school districts, understand HOA guidelines, interpret market shifts, and even recognize red flags during walk-throughs. More importantly, I offer access to homes you won’t always find on Zillow or Realtor.com.

What many buyers don’t realize is that having a dedicated agent costs nothing out of pocket. In most cases, my commission is

paid by the seller, but my loyalty is 100% to you.

Whether you’re relocating from across the country or moving just a few neighborhoods over, Suwanee offers something for everyone. But knowing where to look — and what to avoid — takes local insight, trusted relationships, and real-time market awareness. I don’t just sell homes in Suwanee; I live, work, and give back here.

Let’s Talk Real Estate!

Looking for a place that fits your lifestyle – and your future? Call or text me at 404-819-1068. I’ll help you find the right home, in the right neighborhood, with a plan that makes sense for you. Mention this Suwanee Magazine ad by August 31 to receive a Jolly Good Bonus — up to $1,000 toward your closing costs! ■

SMART TIPS FOR FINDING “THE ONE”

Because home shopping isn't just about checking boxes — it's about making confident, informed decisions (and avoiding buyer’s remorse).

1. Check the Bones, Not Just the Bling. That shiny kitchen backsplash might distract you from the 20-yearold HVAC. Always look past the pretty.

2. Ask About the HOA Rules. That charming neighborhood feel often comes with guidelines. From lawn length to parking rules, know what you’re signing up for.

3. Location = Lifestyle. You’re not just buying a home — you’re buying your daily routine. Think grocery stores, coffee spots, and traffic patterns.

4. Think Like Future You. Will this home still work in five years? Would a future buyer love it, too? If you’re getting a great deal because of a steep driveway that

you can live with, just remember — you’ll likely need to offer a great deal when it’s your turn to sell.

5. Use a Local Agent. Your agent should know what’s coming soon, what’s worth a second look, and how to spot the deal behind the dazzle. The listing agent represents the seller. You deserve someone in your corner who’s loyal to you and not just the transaction.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned mover, these quick tips will help you house hunt with strategy, not just scrolling. The right home is more than good bones — it’s the right fit for your lifestyle, your future, and your peace of mind. ■

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD WRESTLING WITH THE DREADED “A” WORD

t often starts small: a sudden hesitation to hang out with friends, a stomachache before school, sleepless nights before an event. At first, you might chalk it up to nerves or just a phase. But when anxiety begins to take the driver’s seat in your child’s life, it can leave you feeling helpless in the passenger seat. If you’ve ever watched your child or teen wrestle with anxiety, you know how quickly it can turn the simplest moments into overwhelming ones. Whether it shows up as feeling panicked before a game or quiet withdrawal from others, anxiety has a way of sneaking in and stealing peace from both kids and their parents. The good news is you don’t have to just stand by and watch. Parents can be a significant resource to help teens and kids develop more understanding about anxiety and ways to be resilient through it.

HERE ARE THREE TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED:

Zero Anxiety is NOT the Goal

Anxiety is an emotion we all experience at times and we actually need to help us stay safe. Our emotions are not meant to be silenced or ignored; they should be used as clues to figure out what our hopes, desires, and needs are. Help your child get curious about their anxiousness and other emotions. You can do so by sitting quietly with them until they are ready to talk about how they are feeling, or modeling this exercise for them by saying out loud how emotions — even anxiety — help you navigate decisions. For example, “I’m feeling anxious right now, I think it is because this is really important to me.”

Anxiety is an emotion to be welcomed and intrigued by because it exists to help you. However, if you see anxiety or other emotions as a problem and put your attention towards trying to stop or avoid them, the emotion usually intensifies. If you want anxiety to reduce, try letting

the emotion be there, ask questions about when and why it started (it is ok if they don’t know), and figure out what your child’s desires and needs are.

Avoidance Often Increases Anxiety

Think of all the ways kids and teens avoid the anxious feelings they might experience. I hear that many kids — especially teens — just look at their phone or tablet when they feel anxious. While on the surface this doesn’t seem like a big deal, this likely rewires their brain to avoid feeling anxious, bored, sad,

and many other emotions over time. It reinforces the idea that emotions are something to avoid rather than be curious about.

Fast forward to a moment when your child can’t get away from their feelings of anxiousness or sadness; they might quickly run out of capacity or tolerance for their emotions because they have not been training or preparing for them. A great way to help your child build their capacity for anxiety is to encourage them to take steps towards doing what they are feeling anxious about, if you feel it is safe for them to do. This could be ordering for themself at a restaurant or talking to a new classmate. As they experience doing what they feel anxious about, they learn from their own experience that their fear is not likely to happen, and they are capable of doing difficult things.

Increase Resiliency

Help your child understand what leads to anxiety — the research here might surprise you. Did you know that teens spend an average of 6-9 hours on screens a day with 5 of those hours being on social media? Teens who use screens more than 4 hours a day have higher rates of anxiety and depression. While I know this

is only one factor that can increase anxiety, I encourage you to consider how the use of screens could be impacting your child or teen. Could your child’s screen habits be leading to anxiety by perpetuating a lack of sleep, sunlight, and social connection? If your child’s brain is not getting what it needs to thrive, your child is much more likely to have difficulty regulating emotions and being resilient If anxiety has become an ongoing obstacle for your child to enjoy life or accomplish tasks, contacting a therapist is likely a good next step. Therapy can help your child understand the complexities of the specific anxiety they are experiencing and help increase resiliency. However, therapy works best to proactively build resiliency skills in your child to help them to prepare for difficult moments ahead, so don’t wait until your child is really struggling with intense anxiety to seek out therapy or mental health resources. RAISING RESILIENT KIDS IN A DIGITAL WORLD

Five takeaways from our parent dinner on raising resilient kids — plus a simple format to host your own

Recently, Mollie Khine and Level Creek Elementary administration gathered 50 parents for a Jeffersonian-style dinner and discussion inspired by the book, The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The topic? Raising emotionally healthy kids in a digital world. The Jeffersonian format is simple, but effective. Instead of a presentation, parents join small-group conversations guided by parent facilitators

to both share and listen. Each table has only one person speaking at a time.

According to the hosts, here’s what stood out:

1. Parents are craving connection. From those in the room to those on the waitlist, we heard a resounding interest in creating more opportunities to gather in person to talk openly about digital safety, screen time, and the pressures shaping childhood today.

2. We’re overprotecting offline and underprotecting online. This theme from the book really resonated, and the groups explored ideas for strengthening ageappropriate independence offline while adding safeguards online.

3. Real-world skills lay the foundation for healthy digital habits. The goal isn’t to avoid screens entirely, it’s to help kids build positive digital habits and real-world coping skills.

4. Awareness is the first step. Because most of us didn’t grow up with this tech, it takes real effort to understand the landscape and make informed choices.

5. This is a community effort. One household’s rules won’t be enough. We need shared norms, open dialogue, and support from each other.

It’s common to find kids using their phones as a distraction from facing their emotions. Learning how to steer them in a healthier direction is integral in aiding their development and creating positive habits.

Join Them for the Next Event:

Screenagers Next Chapter- Youth Mental Health in the Digital Age Film Screening + Parent Discussion

Mollie Khine and Jennifer Wilmoth will be hosting a showing of Screenagers followed by guided group discussion for parents and community leaders. Learn, share, and connect as you navigate parenting in the digital age — together. For event sponsorship inquiries email: info@thriveforwardtherapy.com.

The new Town Center on Main was the perfect venue for the inaugural High Line Criterium this past April.

SUWANEE HOSTED HIGH LINE CRITERIUM BIKE RACE AS PART OF SPEED WEEK

ORLD-CLASS cycling came to Suwanee this past April as the city hosted its first-ever criterium race, the High Line Criterium, right in the heart of its new Town Center on Main. The high-speed event was part of Speed Week, a premier series of criterium races that attracts elite cyclists from around the world to Georgia and South Carolina. As the fifth stop in the week-long competition, Suwanee joined a prestigious circuit that includes marquee events like the Athens Twilight Criterium and the Greenville Cycling Classic.

The race transformed Town Center on Main into a high-energy arena, drawing crowds to the closed-loop course for an up-close look at professional cycling at its fastest. For Suwanee, it was a milestone moment — not just in hosting an internationalcaliber race, but in celebrating local talent. Two Suwanee-area residents earned podium finishes: Juan Beltran, a City of Suwanee public works crew member, placed second in the 60+ Masters Crit, while Preston Eye, a former North Gwinnett High School student, finished third in the Men’s Pro race.

We caught up with both riders to hear how they got into cycling and what it meant to race in their hometown.

Preston Eye: Pedaling with Passion

 Preston’s love for cycling began with riding mountain bikes alongside his dad. Around age 14 or 15, a new neighbor named Carlos introduced him to road cycling and invited him on a group ride.

“I was riding my grandfather’s Cannondale Criterium bike from the ’80s that he used to train on,” Preston says. “From there, I joined a junior racing group based in Lawrenceville called Frasier Cycling.”

He credits much of his development to his grandfather — a former speed skater — and Kelly Rogan, formerly of Frasier Cycling, who continues to support and coach him today.

“My grandfather encouraged me to dedicate myself to something that wasn’t traditional, and Kelly has been a huge motivator. I travel to most races with her. I wouldn’t be able to do this without Kelly.”

Racing in Suwanee was a special moment for Preston. “My girlfriend’s family is local — they had never seen a bike race before,” he says. “They came out with their neighbors. I saw so many people I grew up with. I feel very, very grateful I got to race in front of a hometown crowd.”

Now a full-time student racing for Piedmont University and a professional team, Preston trains 10 hours a week and also competes in cyclocross races throughout the year. His long-term goal? “I hope I can find a balance to become a paid professional.”

Some of his favorite memories are rides with his grandfather, and

he hopes more young people will discover the joy of cycling. “Don’t be afraid to get into cycling,” he says. “We need more kids on bikes — in their neighborhoods or riding the Suwanee Greenway. Challenge yourself to do laps in Sims Lake Park.”

Preston’s mom Tracy, a teacher at Roberts Elementary along with his dad, reflected on seeing her son race in Suwanee: “This is where Preston and his siblings grew up. Watching him race in the park where he used to play with Nerf guns and BMX bikes was exhilarating. It was even more special with so many family members, neighbors, students, and old teammates there.”

“Cycling has taught Preston that he can do hard things,” she adds. “Out of all the sports he’s tried, this is the one he fell in love with. It’s become his passion, his outlet, and it’s allowed him to make friends and travel the world.”

Juan Beltran: A Dream Realized in Suwanee

 Juan Beltran began cycling in his hometown of Bogotá, Colombia, in 1990. He raced as a beginner before moving to Florida in 1999 and eventually settling in Sugar Hill in 2004. A year later, he rekindled his passion for the sport after seeing group rides around Suwanee.

“I bought a bike from Jeff Nalley at Suwanee Creek Bicycle and started riding with friends,” Juan says. While Suwanee Creek Bicycle has since closed, Jeff remains a well-known figure in the local cycling community. Juan regularly rides with local groups to destinations like Lake Lanier and Harbins Park. Over the years, he has competed in regional

races in Lawrenceville, a time trial in Cumming, and a criterium at the Gwinnett Stripers stadium.

The High Line Criterium was a full-circle moment. “It was amazing,” Juan says. “They brought together fun, competition, and excitement. It puts Suwanee on another level.”

Juan currently trains 180–200 miles per week as he prepares for one of the most grueling rides in the world — Alto de Letras in Colombia. Known as the world’s longest climb, it’s an 81-kilometer ascent with nearly 4,000 meters of elevation gain. He plans to attempt it in September alongside cycling friends, including Carlos, the owner of Good Bicycle.

“Cycling is like life,” Juan says. “You plan where you’re going, but the journey brings surprises — weather, road conditions, obstacles. It teaches you not to take shortcuts, to keep going until you can’t. It fills my heart and makes me feel alive. I love it.”

Juan’s connection to Suwanee is a special one.

“When I interviewed for a job with the city 13 years ago, I saw a picture of the Tour of Georgia race in City Hall. I was inspired by the idea of working for the city and cycling. Thirteen years later, I’ve done both — and racing in one of the city’s events was one of the happiest moments of my life.”

The inaugural High Line Criterium brought worldclass cycling to Suwanee — and gave local riders like Preston and Juan the chance to shine on a global stage, right in the heart of their hometown. The city plans to bring the race back next year with hopes of growing it into a signature event that draws even more elite cyclists, enthusiastic crowds, and community involvement to Town Center on Main. ■

The High Line Criterium took place on a closed circuit in Suwanee’s Town Center on Main. The park served as a great venue, with excellent views from the pedestrian bridge.

Hoochie Momma is a bold and rich interpretation of stout. Clocking in at 7%, the base features numerous malts to provide a complex blend of creamy chocolate, toffee, coffee, biscuit, and bread crusts. A small amount of milk sugar smooths the finish and provides a pleasant mild sweetness to balance the roasted character. It is not unlike an espresso with cream to cut the roast.

TILLFIRE BREWING is proud to announce that its fan-favorite Hoochie Momma Milk Stout has earned a Silver Medal at the 2025 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious international beer competition in the world.

In a competition where medals are only awarded when entries meet the highest standards of quality and style, earning a Silver is a major achievement — and a testament to the craftsmanship and creativity of StillFire’s brewing team.

Rich, bold, and irresistibly smooth, Hoochie Momma Milk Stout clocks in at 7% ABV and features a complex blend of

creamy chocolate, toffee, coffee, and biscuit flavors. A touch of milk sugar softens the roasted malt character, creating a velvety finish that fans compare to an espresso with cream.

Sharing Quality Craft Beer and Honoring Community

ine Creek Brewing Co. was created by Peachtree City residents for Peachtree City residents.

With its name, mascot, and specific beers and spirits inspired by the local community, there’s no denying that the passion for good beer and giving back is at the heart of this brewery. Two other locations have opened since the primary spot sold its first beer back in 2018; emphasizing Line Creek’s significance in Peachtree City as well as the south side of Atlanta. We interviewed Line Creek’s sales director, Joe Hazelton, whose passion and excitement for the craft beer scene — and the company as a whole — made for a fun, informative conversation.

How did you get involved in the craft beer industry? I always knew I wanted to do something with alcohol for some reason; not because it gets people drunk, but I’ve always had a passion for cooking, food, and pairing in general. I had to learn about craft beer when I worked at the Taco Mac in Lindbergh about 17 years ago, and that required me to taste it, understand how it was made, talk about it, etc. I’ve been interested in the craft beer scene ever since.

Why Peachtree City? Line Creek is Peachtree City’s first official brewery. All four of the co-founders live here, and they saw a need for a place to hang out in a social setting that wasn’t a bar or restaurant. They jumped on the

opportunity to provide that for the community, and opened this location in 2018 — right after Senate Bill 85 (permitting breweries to sell directly to consumers) was passed. Now there are two other locations, one in Fayetteville (Line Creek Bus Barn) and the other in Newnan (The Reserve).

What’s the story behind the name Line Creek? “Line Creek” is derived from the name of a creek that runs through Peachtree City and winds up right behind the brewery; this creek has been a Peachtree City staple since the city was founded. It only made sense to name the brewery after the city’s most iconic natural landmark, since the brewery itself was created for the local community. We also pay homage to history with our mascot, the mule. In the 1970s, a man carved a mule’s head into Line Creek’s rockface, creating “Mule Rock.” You can find this rock at Peachtree City’s Line Creek Nature Preserve. We also created Wynn’s Mill Bourbon that’s named after a mill that was built along Line Creek back in the 1800s.

What has the community support been like? The support has been great from the start. Initially it was crazy because we only had one location so we were pulling from everywhere, but now we have little boroughs for everyone. There really wasn’t anything like this before we came into the picture, so it’s been awesome watching the community take advantage of a spot created to give them something different to do. We’ve been lucky to get so much local support, and we try to give back to the community by donating beer to charity events, golf tournaments, benefit concerts, etc., so they can save the money they were going to spend on libations and put it towards the charities themselves.

- Joe Hazelton, Sales Director

What sets Line Creek apart from other Georgia breweries? That’s a hard question, because I feel like Georgia breweries have come a long way and there are so many good ones out there. I’d say a lot of breweries have a “beer identity” where they focus primarily on perfecting one specific type of beer, whether that’s IPAs, Germanstyle, etc. I feel like because there isn’t as much competition on the south side, we’re a brewery dedicated to making beer for everybody; we have all kinds of options because we have all kinds of people come in here. Now that we’ve added spirits to the menu, that’s helped cater to a wider audience.

What is your favorite beer in the taproom? That’s tough because I

like all beer for the most part. Our top-selling beer in the taproom is Maverick Lager , but then we have a lot of really good wheats, sours, and seltzers as well. I’d say my choice depends on my mood and the weather; if it’s a nice, hot day I prefer the Rangefinder Light Lager , but when the temperature drops I prefer our Foreign Exchange Nitro which is similar to a Guinness.

If you could recommend one of your beers that’s perfect for summer, what would it be and why? We have Kickstand Double IPA which is fantastic, and on the other side of the coin we have a Sunday Brunch Seltzer which is light, fresh, and mimosa-flavored. I plan on brewing a rice lager in the near future which I hope will be a

refreshing summer beer, but I’m still working on the name and the recipe for now. We also have our Happy Cowboy Sour series , which plays on different Jolly Rancherflavored sours. The watermelon one is definitely a summer favorite.

Are you currently hosting any events in the taproom? We always have events going on. The best place to keep track of our schedules between the three locations is our Facebook page @LineCreekBrewingCo.

Tell us a bit about your brewing team. We have a great brewing team. Our head brewer is Dave Harry, and he has a lot of experience. He used to brew on St. Thomas, and has been in the business forever. Outside of

Line Creek’s brewing tanks, pictured here, showcase the elaborate tools required to brew the beer perfectly.
Their Peachtree City location is their primary distribution center, hence the need for equipment of this magnitude.

that, we have a brewer at each location. For our Fayetteville Bus Barn, we alternate, so Sarah Parker and Will Brookshire rotate between that location and this one, but for right now Sarah took over here and Will’s primarily in Fayetteville. Our Newnan brewer is Parker Williams; he’s lived in the Newnan area for a while, and has previously worked at Scofflaw and Burnt Hickory breweries. Gwinnett County Public Library Awarded Grant to Expand Community Adult Literacy and College-Readiness

BIG NEWS for Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) — they’ve been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, one of the nation’s most respected philanthropic foundations.

GCPL is one of just 11 libraries nationwide chosen through the Libraries as Pillars of Education and Democracy initiative to expand adult literacy and college-readiness services. Here in Gwinnett, the funding will ramp up free English language classes in partnership with Gwinnett County Public Schools.

In an era of budget cuts, this grant couldn’t come at a better time. “At a time where funding is being decreased in a lot of areas, to get this kind of a grant means everything to us,” says GCPL’s Duffie Dixon.

The library also plans to use the grant funds to recruit volunteers (background checks included), provide stipends for instructors, and offer bus passes to help students get to class.

“Thanks to this generous award, we’ll be able to better support the English language learner needs of the Gwinnett community than ever before,” adds GCPL Executive Director Charles Pace.

Carnegie’s support for public libraries goes back more than a century — from

helping build nearly 1,700 libraries in the U.S. to funding library education and digitization globally. Dame Louise Richardson, president of Carnegie, notes, “At a time when trust in public institutions is fraying, libraries retain public trust. We’re proud to support programs that open doors for all.”

YORKSHIRE PUBLISHING recently announced the release of The Mouse Who Couldn’t Eat Cheese, a children’s picture book written by Lawrenceville resident and award-winning author M.B. Mooney, with illustrations by Ekaterina Mironova.

Lanier Islands Resort named the official hotel and resort of Georgia Tech athletics

THIS PAST May, Gwinnett’s own Lanier Islands Resort was named the official hotel and resort of Georgia Tech athletics. The recognition is one of many that the destination has received over the years, but this honor is extra special for the Chairman and President of Lanier Islands, Virgil R. Williams and Matthew Bowling — both of whom are Georgia Tech alums.

“From the moment you drive onto the Islands, you can see the impact Georgia Tech had on our family,” says Bowling, President of Lanier Islands Resort and grandson of Virgil R. Williams. “My grandfather envisioned and designed the stunning bridge over the lake into the resort. While his sense of vision is all his own, a wealth of the engineering talent he developed at an early age was thanks to our alma mater. The

opportunity to partner our family business with the Institute that has provided us with so much is very special.”

Lanier Islands’ goal is to provide “A Different World, Close to Home,” and this is an endeavor they prioritize yearround. Whether the resort appeals to those seeking an 18-hole lakeside golf course, miles of walking trails, pickleball courts, or the themed summer and winter parks — Margaritaville at Lanier Islands’ Fins Up Water Park and License to Chill Snow Island, respectively — the resort has it all. Their partnership with Georgia Tech has created its own set of perks, including lakeside resort plans to offer special

accommodation rates to Yellow Jacket alumni and fans during football season. To plan your stay around upcoming events at Lanier Islands Resort, Georgia Tech fans and other prospective guests of the lakeside retreat are encouraged to visit LanierIslands.com/Events.

Coffee to Compassion: Flowery Branch's Whole Being Café’s FAN Club Serves Up Hope

WHOLE BEING CAFE’S FAN Club (Feed A Neighbor) is a program designed to assist customers in need of a warm meal, helping hand, or a simple act of compassion. It was created by the cafe’s owners, Kevin and Gail Tomlinson, in 2021. Whole Being Cafe opened a year prior, and — despite the multitude of uncertainties that occurred in 2020 — the local community showcased loyalty to the business, encouraging the owners to give back. Fastforward to today, and an average of 250 meals a year are donated to the FAN Club, showcasing a sense of hope and care for the local community.

The FAN Club is a pay-it-forward initiative, sustained through a collection of small donations. Customers can utilize this program by requesting their meal “be put on the FAN card” after ordering. The card gains funding through people rounding up on their order total, giving separately in-person, or donating through Whole Being’s website. The FAN Club’s focus is to aid members of the community in a way that eliminates shame and provides a sense of dignity and

support. It’s a prime example of the

awareness and financial assistance to both Straight Street Ministries’ Backpack Love outreach program and Mercy Chefs’ disaster relief organization — dreams that are coming to fruition as the FAN Club funds continue to grow. There’s no time like the present to help those in need, and the FAN Club is gradually spreading its positive mark on the local community and beyond.

To donate to the FAN Club, visit WholeBeingCafe.com, or stop by the cafe and treat yourself to delicious drinks and treats today. Whole Being Cafe

Brunch, Bowls, and Beats

WHETHER YOU’RE OUT WITH FAMILY, CATCHING UP WITH FRIENDS, OR PLANNING A NIGHT FOR TWO, DOWNTOWN SUGAR HILL OFFERS THE PERFECT BLEND OF LOCAL FLAVOR.

TART THE day with brunch at Rushing Trading Co., a cozy favorite known for its bottomless mimosas and the crowd-pleasing Yosemite Biscuit. With a welcoming atmosphere and thoughtfully curated menu, it’s an ideal spot to relax in the morning. Just a short walk away, the new Starbucks under the Lyric Apartments provides a stylish and quiet place to focus. Its sit-down layout and natural lighting make it well-suited for studying, working remotely, or simply enjoying your favorite coffee in peace.

After a workout or class at the E Center, many locals head to Playa Bowls, also located beneath the Lyric Apartments. Packed with fresh fruit and energizing ingredients, their colorful acai bowls are a refreshing way to refuel and recharge.

As the day winds down, families often gather at The Splash Park, especially during Splash Nights on the last Friday of each month. Splash Night offers a fun night with food trucks, live music, and entertainment for all ages. It’s easy to keep the night going with dinner at Shine Pizza, followed by a sweet treat from Scoops or Kilwins.

If you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant, Rreal Tacos delivers with hand-crafted Mexican street food and a vibrant energy. It’s a great place to start the evening with chips, salsa, and a round of margaritas before diving into their menu of flavorful favorites.

To close out the night, head to Indio Brewing Co. or The Rooftop. Indio, a Latin-owned brewery, offers craft beers and themed nights in a relaxed setting. Upstairs, The Rooftop invites guests to unwind with amazing views, live music, and signature cocktails.

My friend, Vanessa, just bought Suwanee Towne Florist! She has been the designer there for a few years, and now she’s spreading her wings & branching out! She will breathe a breath of fresh air into the shop. Feel free to stop in to meet her and pick up flowers or a small gift. I’m so happy for you, Vanessa!!!”

“The Compassion in Action Project has completed some fulfilling projects lately! We’ve recently hosted a Bed Build Event benefitting Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Fifty volunteers of all ages gathered together and spent their Saturday morning building beds for kids in Gwinnett County. Because of their generosity, 25 kids — the equivalent of a whole classroom full — have a brandnew bed to call their own; some of them for the first time in their life! The Compassion in Action Project has also recently delivered Chemo Care Kits to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Aflac Cancer Center. The kits contained fun treats, much needed toiletries, and journals decorated by kids in our community. We hope they bring a touch of color and a smile to those that receive them!”

CHRISTA WILLIAMS

CREATING CLOSER community is a big part of what we do here at Suwanee Magazine. That’s why we’re proud to bring you The Faces of Suwanee. Suwanee is a great community with great people. We’ll be featuring conversations we have with members of our community as a way of telling the story of Suwanee, one smiling face at a time. The Faces of Suwanee shines a light on the people who live and work here. You can read all of the interviews at TheFacesofSuwanee.com, and even nominate someone you think should be featured on the website. Be sure to follow Suwanee Magazine’s Facebook page where we’ll be sharing new Faces of Suwanee interviews regularly.

We welcome Christa Williams and her family to Suwanee! Christa and her husband, Christopher, are the co-owners of Prime IV Hydration & Wellness, and they’re opening their second location in Town Center Park. We love to see new businesses coming to Suwanee, and we look forward to the ways their company will strengthen our sense of community as well as our “work, live, and play” philosophy.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: My husband is both my best friend and my business partner. He and I met through work in our hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, and we’ve been married for 21 years. We have an amazing 8-1/2 year-old son, Easton; we call ourselves “The Big 3.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND PAST CAREER. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT?

I‘ve been in healthcare for almost my entire life. I started working for an oral surgeon when I was 16 and have been serving patients ever since. In 2008, I started a Nationwide Corporate Wellness Company — Synergy Wellness. We specialize in preventative healthcare for businesses and their employees, and we’ve been ranked a top 10 screening company eight years running. I am also the owner of two Prime IV Hydration & Wellness Spas — one here in Suwanee and one in East Cobb, Marietta. I truly love helping people be the healthiest they can be.

WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN OUR COMMUNITY? There are so many, but if I had to pick two favorites, I’d say Ippolito’s and Bottles & Bones. My favorite spot for a cool snack is definitely Rita’s.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED OR WORKED HERE? We visited Georgia in 2006 to see one of my husband’s friends and fell in love with the area. We moved here three months later.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS AREA? My favorite thing about Suwanee is the family atmosphere and all of the city’s events. It’s such a vibrant and inclusive town. The energy is infectious; you can’t help but be happy here.

WHAT CURRENT OR FORMER BUSINESS, OR PLACE, MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST NOSTALGIC ABOUT THIS AREA? Mom & Pop shops and independently owned businesses. I prefer to shop locally owned businesses over the big box stores when possible. They remind me of Pittsburgh where all the little boroughs had so much character.

In 2008, I started a nationwide corporate wellness company — Synergy Wellness. We specialize in preventative healthcare for businesses and their employees, and we’ve been ranked a top 10 screening company eight years running.”

IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THAT BE? It would be my grandfather. He told me so many great stories when I was younger. I wish I could have understood the importance of that relationship at the time. I would love to talk with him now, ask more questions, and absorb his wisdom.

WHERE WOULD YOU TAKE HIM? I would love to take him back to Germany to see where he grew up and learn about his family.

WHERE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN? Monaco is visually the most beautiful place I have ever been. Turkey, however, may have been the most surprisingly beautiful and emotionally powerful place I’ve been. Both have a rich history and are gorgeous places to visit.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST MOVIE YOU REMEMBER SEEING IN A THEATRE? The Great Muppet Caper. I must have been 4 or 5 years old.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST. I love experiences and traveling the world. Visiting New Zealand is at the top of my list.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A CROWD OF PEOPLE? I would remind people to listen more than they talk.

WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU HAVE EVER MET? Dr. Alex Acquah — he was a doctor form Ghana. We worked together traveling the United States for years doing corporate health screenings. Even though he was a high-ranking doctor and his family was connected politically, his license wasn’t accepted here in the U.S. He had so many interesting stories and life experiences. We came from entirely different backgrounds, but we had a connection we couldn’t really explain.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE? Music is a very big part of my life. I like everything from country, pop, jazz, opera, alternative, blues, rock ‘ n ’ roll, and especially ’80s hair bands. Music is in my soul!

TELL US SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW. I went to Europe for a month and a half and visited seven countries with my husband. I only had a backpack, so whatever I brought with me I had to carry myself. It was a life-changing experience

WOULD YOU RATHER SING TO A CROWD OF 50 PEOPLE OR SPEAK TO A CROWD OF 500? I would definitely prefer to speak to a crowd and give a positive message. I love to sing, but I feel like spreading positivity is what the world needs more of right now. ■
