The Southern University System Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation established to secure financial support for each of the five campuses of the Southern University System. The Foundation is a voluntary institute of business and professional leaders, proudly incorporated to provide broader educational advantages to our students, encourage research among our faculty, and advance the University's role in helping to build an increasingly functional Louisiana.

The Southern University System established the Honoré Center for Undergraduate Student Achievement (CUSA) with funding from the State of Louisiana and other sources to improve success rates for African-American males in Louisiana that attend college, while increasing the number of male classroom teachers in urban settings.

A cohort of New Orleans area male high school graduates are selected for the initiative that provides them substantial added support and resources to complete their college education at the Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) campus, and to become effective classroom teachers.

The initiative is named after Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré, a Southern University alumnus, military hero, and an expert on leadership development. Students with leadership potential and the motivation to make a difference in their communities are selected ideally with ACT scores and GPA that qualify them for University admission with no more than one developmental course required. Honoré scholars are provided year-round campus housing at SUNO in a holistic living and learning environment.

Additional support includes a personal computer, campus meal plans, a monthly stipend, plus a textbook voucher per semester for up to five years. Life skills and tutoring resources are incorporated to help ensure their academic and personal success.

The Williams Center for Undergraduate Student Achievement (WCUSA) was established at Southern University Shreveport (SUSLA) by Southern University graduates Tony and Tina Williams, who generously donated $25,000 to establish the Center. WCUSA serves as a conduit to train, teach, and serve at-risk minority males while increasing their presence in the fields of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Education and Allied Health programs. The goal of WCUSA is to increase the enrollment, retention, and graduation rates for minority males.

Tony Williams, a Shreveport native, understands the importance of life changing opportunities. Both he and his wife Tina received their undergraduate degrees from SouthernUniversity Baton Rouge and attribute this experience to their successful business careers in the corporate America and as prosperous entrepreneurs.

As the only HBCU comprehensive community college in Louisiana, SUSLA serves a ever-growing population of full-time and part-time students.

THE SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENT PROGRAM In an attempt to create a more sustainable business model for the Southern University and A&M College System, The Southern University System Foundation has designed a comprehensive endowment program and has identified more than 830 prospective endowment donors.

The latest estimates of the transfer of wealth hold immense promise for building endowments. Low range estimates project that more than $41 trillion will transfer from 1998 to 2052. At the close of fiscal year 2018, the median U.S. college endowment was $59.8 million.

Southern University’s endowment at the end of fiscal year 2018 was only $20 million.

Over the next three-years, our goal is to help build long-term University sustainability by: Raising $50 million in new endowment gifts by December 31, 2022 Securing 455 new individual endowment gifts by December 31, 2022 Conducting 830 individual endowment donor sales calls by December 31, 2021 Recruiting/training 50 volunteer endowment advisory board members by August 30, 2020

wENDOWED PROFESSORSHIP PROGRAM The program guarantees Louisiana Support Fund assistance to annually fund two $20,000 matches to establish (two) $100,000 professorships per year for each eligible four-year and special purpose campus, and (one) $20,000 match to establish (one) $100,000 professorship per year for each eligible two-year campus.

For each endowed professorship awarded, the campus has provided $80,000 in private, non-state or permanently designated institutional funds. Annual funding guarantees per institution are contingent upon compliance with policy requirements related to maximum vacancy rates and numbers of full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty employed by institution.

ENDOWED CHAIRS AND EMINENT SCHOLARS PROGRAM The minimum level of funding for an endowed chair is $1 million.

The Louisiana Board of Regents permits and encourages submissions requesting chairs of up to $3 million dollars. Campuses may choose to request $400,000, $800,000, or $1,200,000 in Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund matching to endow chairs at the $1 million, $2 million, and $3 million levels.

FELTON GRANDISON CLARK ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM The fund was established to generate significant annual investment income to support the advancement of the University’s mission, promote a financially sustainable business model, and engage benefactors with a shared interest in the sustainability of higher education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A cash or planned gift of no less than $100,000 is required for the distinguished fellowship and a cash or planned gift of no less than $10,000 is required for the regular fellowship. To establish a planned gift, a benefactor provides documentation that names the Felton Grandison Clark Endowed Fellowship Fund of the Southern University System Foundation, as owner of the planned gift. The planned gift must have a cash value of no less than $100,000 for the distinguished fellowship or $10,000 for the regular fellowship.

Beetles In Action at SU! Air Potato Beetle: Cost-effective Biological Control Southern University Baton Rouge joined forces with the Louisiana State University Ag Center to combat invasive plant species in the State. The project entitled, Biological Control of Air Potato in Louisiana, focuses on the research of the Air Potato which is a vine the grows fast covering large areas, smothering native species, redusing biodiversity and altering local communities. Air potato is threatening urban and natural ecosystemes in Louisiana and the Southeastern United States.

To combat this problem, the use of specialist insects was introduced. A more ecologically-friendly approach to combat the problem is the use of the Lilioceris cheni known as th air potato beetle, Scientists have proved that the beetle feeds exclusively on air potato. Beetle females lay egg masses on the underside of the leaves and make cup-like leaf shape. Larve hatch in 4-5 days and then feed in groups on new leaves. Older larvae will stop feeding and pupate in the soil. Two weeks after pupation, new adults emerge and the cycle starts again.

The air potato beetle in action at SU! The Southern University System Foundation supported research focused on combatting the air potato, an invasive plant species in Louisiana, by introducing the air potato beetle to consume the plant.

Innovation of the Bluff!

SUBR Mechanical Engineering The Southern University System Foundation provided matching funds to the mechanical engineering program acquisition of 250 kn (56,200 lb)-rated servo-hydraulic material testing equipment and accessories that are essential for the successful execution of on-going research activities, and the educational training of undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the items will enhance the existing research infrastructure of the program which will enable new research opportunities.

The Southern University Innovation Center (SUIC) is a collaboration between the SUSF and SUBR campus. In 2012, the SU System Foundation received awards of $1.2 million from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to construct the Innovation Center at SU. The Center nurtures the development of entrepreneurial companies, helping them survive and grow during the start-up period, when they are most vulnerable. These programs provide their client companies with business support services and resources tailored to the development of young firms.

LOUISIANA SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (LSBDC) The LSBDC network has access to robust databases, business research resources, and knowledgeable experts who can help you successfully navigate the obstacles that come with innovating, launching, growing, renewing, and transitioning a business.

STUDENT IDEA VILLAGE The Student Idea Village connects University students to innovation and provides an environment where students can be creative free of distraction. The Student Idea Village incorporates technology and flexibility while providing students access to a wealth of resources guided by seasoned business counselors and mentors.

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER The Disaster Recover Center prepares your business in the event of extended service outages caused by factors beyond your control (e.g., natural disasters, man-made events), and to restore services to the fullest extent possible in a minimum timeframe. We provide to our companies on site as well as to businesses within the Baton Rouge community the resources needed to implement preventive measures whenever possible to minimize operational disruptions and to recover as quickly as possible.

WE ARE INNOVATION SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP FELLOWSHIP The Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship provides education and support for local social entrepreneurs. The fellowship encourages young entrepreneurs to propose creative initiatives and/or organizations that will be designed to work on issues that are not being adequately addressed by existing nonprofits in the local community. Over a 24-month period, social entrepreneurs receive training, coaching, mentorship, and various forms of capital support to help shape their ideas and turn them into viable efforts. Fellows live on campus, attend Valdry Center seminars, receive a modest stipend in addition to having their living expenses and tuition and fees covered. The Fellowship provides office space and business start-up support to assist two (2) Southern University Baton Rouge campus student entrepreneurs with the launching their ventures.

Since 1986, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located on the Southern University Baton Rouge campus has been a public service unit of the SUBR College of Business. The purpose of the center is to provide individual consulting services, training programs, and information assistance to potential and existing small businesses in the Greater Baton Rouge Region including Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes. “The SBDC has been one of the major reasons why the Printing Source has evolved over the years. They have provided us with helpful resources and new ideas that have taken the Printing Source to the next level.�

The Southern University Law Center Technology and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic The Clinic provides free legal services in connection with trademark and patent law issues, as well as services in connection with entity formation/structuring and some regulatory/licensing issues, for entrepreneurs, non-profits, and inventor clients with limited financial resources.

A phenomenal idea development in 2016 by two br ot h e r s, Dr. O r lan d o Pa lm er a n d Kyle Pa lm er, quickly transformed into the ground work of an independently owned pharmacy in their hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Parker’s Pharmacy opened in 2018 and now provides medical, health, and wellness care to over 4000 patients across Louisiana. The heart of Parker’s Pharmacy is the community that has overwhelmingly supported the company since the first day of business. The focus of the company is not solely based on financial gain, it is about ensuring that the pharmacy is contributing to the advancement of healthy and strong quality of life for those within and around the city of Baton Rouge.

A MASTER PLAN FOR SU AND SCOTLANDVILLE Southern University is embarking on a long-term planning effort that not only focuses on expanding enrollment and upgrading facilities, but also on increasing the impact on the community. Representatives from Southern University, the Southern University System Foundation, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, and the business community have been working on a long-term strategic plan for the campus, Imagine 20K. The Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX) has been engaged to coordinate this venture. CPEX and the organizing committee has identified three focus areas: 1. Southern University Campus Master Plan (12 months) 2. Small Area Plan for area surrounding Southern (12 months) 3. Implementation Plan to begin implementing strategic recommendations (12 months) CAMPUS MASTER PLAN Campuses across the country have recognized the importance of long-term visioning to guide their growth and create lasting value.

The Imagine 20K master plan will support Southern University’s current and future activities, while determining the highest and best use of the University’s property. The plan will give the University a framework that will shape future decisions and investment with consistency as opportunities arise.

It will address the following item: • Align the master plan with the recommendations in the previously completed strategic plan • Determine where to add new facilities, remove old ones, or update buildings • Incorporate central green gathering space • Maximize pedestrian connectivity across campus and to surrounding commercial areas and off-site housing • Address potential stormwater management issues within green space design • Review existing facilities to evaluate structural viability, engineering systems and potential improvements • Explore potential for on-campus housing • Facilitate a transparent process for creating a master plan that provides significant opportunity for input from students, faculty, alumni, and the surrounding community.

SMALL AREA PLAN The Small Area Plan will connect the Southern University campus with the surrounding community. It will also provide a strategic plan and framework to spur housing and mixed use development to support the University and adjacent neighborhoods. Multimodal transportation opportunities, traffic flow into the University and signage will also be included. This work will be done in conjunction with the campus master plan to optimize coordination and staffing. The small area plan will include the areas around the campus (Swan, the Scenic Triangle, and Scotlandville).

University Club In an effort to create a culture of philanthropy, the Southern University System Foundation will induct individuals and organizations into the University Club annually. Membership in the University Club requires cumulative cash contributions totaling no less than $100,000 over the donor’s lifetime. All members will be offered a custom columbia blue tailored blazer with gold buttons, to signify membership.

The Southern University Foundation was incorporated in 1968 to promote the educational and cultural welfare of the Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, while providing a broader educational advantage by increasing the University's resources and usefulness to the citizens of Louisiana. FELTON GRANDISON CLARK ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP FUND Felton Grandison Clark (1903-1970) was president of SouthernUniversity in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from 1938 until 1969. Clark's father, Dr. Joseph S. Clark, founded Southern University in 1914 and preceded Felton Clark as president of the University. Felton Clark attended Southern and then completed his undergraduate work at Beloit College. He later received graduate degrees, including a doctoral degree from Columbia University.

Felton Clark's tenure as president of Southern included two incidents that attracted national attention. First, in March 1960, a small group of University students participated in sit-in protests at several lunch counters in Baton Rouge; a much larger group of Southern University students, estimated at the time to number 1,000 students, participated in a demonstration on the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol.

Felton Clark, reportedly bowing to pressure from Governor Earl Long, expelled 18 of the students who participated in the protests. Hundreds of other students withdrew from the University as a result. In January 1962, Clark temporarily closed Southern University to combat race-related student demonstrations.

Later in the decade, the rift between Southern University students and the Clark administration began to heal. Clark encouraged several chemical companies to invest in Louisiana and to hire Southern graduates. He also focused resources on developing and expanding the University’s graduate and professional schools. Under Clark’s leadership, Southern University prospered. It grew from a small college with 40 buildings and 1,500 students in 1938 to a large public university with campuses in New Orleans and Shreveport. At his retirement in 1969, the University had more than 11,000 students, making it the largest historically black university in the nation with an annual budget exceeding $12 million dollars.
