Charity & Community news from across the counties Adur District Council has approved the construction of seven new homes on South Street car park, Lancing. The properties will be used as emergency or temporary accommodation for families with nowhere to stay and are expected to save the Council more than £5 million in the coming years on B&B accommodation.

The Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) Air Ambulance Charity is organising Hound Hike 100, an event that encourages dog lovers to walk 100 kilometres or 100 miles with their pets during May to raise funds for the life-saving charity. The Wey & Arun Canal in Loxwood suffered major damage from vandalism just before Easter. Electrical control equipment for pumps were destroyed and water released from the canal causing over £50,000 worth of damage. Charity & Community News Chichester Fringe returns The Fringe is back in Chichester for its third year, with over 50 performers in more than 30 shows all packed into 18 days from Thursday 1st June until Sunday 18th June. If you don’t fancy traveling up to the Edinburgh Fringe this year, Chichester Fringe has a wide selection of shows to choose from. You may even get a sneak preview of a comedian's stand-up show before it hits the Edinburgh Fringe.

This year’s Fringe program includes stand-up shows at Chichester Canal Cafe from Phil Green’s Millennial Bug (13th June), Lulu Popplewell’s Actually, Actually (16th June), Matt Hutchinson (16th June), and Charlotte Cropper’s Good Girl Gone Rad (13th June). The Novium Museum makes its debut at Chichester Fringe, hosting a free event Ovid with Reverb (2nd June) during Roman Week.

Something new for 2023 is the ‘Fringe in a day’ events. Buy a £15 day pass for a day of theatre at Chichester City Arts Centre and 104 The Hornet, to access all the shows on that day. These

events take place on Thursday 1st June and Saturday 10th June. Chichester Fringe will also be hosting The Chichester Fringe New Comedy Act of the Year Competition, which will run over two heats (on 7th and 8th June) and one grand final (14th June), with the winner performing on the pro Chichester Fringe show on 15th June.

Midhurst recovery from Angel Inn fire Chichester District Council has allocated £300,000 to support Midhurst businesses in the wake of the devastating fire at the (c)westsussex.gov.uk Angel Inn hotel and neighbouring buildings. The council will use the funds to create a business grant scheme, provide training support, and support promotion by business groups in the town, as well as to deliver a large event later in the year.

A member of the council's Economic Development team has also been seconded to support businesses in the town for the next two months,

Pets of the Month Meet Biscuit Crunch and Brandy Snap, two beautiful bunnies who are currently looking for a loving home. These sisters arrived at The Cat & Rabbit Rescue Centre (CRRC) in January after their owner was unable to care for them.

Biscuit Crunch is a white, ginger and black rex, while her sister Brandy Snap is white and grey.

They are both sweet and friendly rabbits, but can be a little nervous and prefer not to be picked up.

Foxes in the garden During lockdown we bought some chickens which delighted the children and then shocked them in equal measure when we got home one evening and the lawn was a flurry of feathers but no chickens. When the local foxes took our replacements we threw in the towel. I couldn’t be angry with them for very long as they were just trying, like all of us, to survive. These sleek, burnished, rusty, fiery spirits both delight us and annoy us and I thought I would find out more about them.

Their name is thought to come from ‘Puk’, a Proto -Indo European word meaning ‘thick haired/tail’.

Humans have always had a love/hate relationship with them. In Europe they represented cunning and trickery and in Asian cultures, familiar spirits with magic powers.

They could herald both good and bad omens. In suburban England they fascinate with their dexterity, annoy with their defecation and yelping and

yet provide one of the few safari experiences in our urban life as we regularly grind the car to a halt in the middle of a night journey and watch a fox caught in the headlights crossing a road. In turn it begins to watch us watching it until it slinks off, presumably neither feeling threatened or very interested.

The red fox, vulpes, is the most common worldwide and there are 11 other main species, with 47 sub species, ranging in habitat from the coldest, snowy regions of the world to African deserts. Some are so specific to a region that they live only on small islands or in a single National Park. They are the second most ubiquitous mammal in the world after humans.

Apart from dogs and man, the only natural predators are eagles and lions, and they have become one of the very few animals to thrive in urban settings. In fact, in the wild, a red fox might live for three years but they can live twice as long in a city. They are omnivores like humans, eating

anything going: insects, eggs, berries, apple cores, rodents and of course left over takeaways.

Their range can really vary, from a few hectares in a town to over 4000 in the Highlands. They generally sleep during the day, though since I’ve been in England I’ve seen them more and more in daylight. They live in dens under the ground, or under garden sheds, with multiple getaways in case of invaders. During Winter they use their tail, ‘brush, as a cover to keep warm.

As a group they are called many different words: Skulk, leash, earth or pack. They stay together as a couple for life and live in a family that can have different lairs including a breeding lair. The male can share his den and be sexually active with more than one female adult. Some of the females, left over from previous litters, aren’t breeders, and have the role of being ‘nannies’ to the new cubs.

The vixen has a litter per year between 1-6 cubs and after about 5 weeks the cubs venture out though they are still cared for over the Summer

by their parents. By Autumn they leave the den and disperse.

It is often wondered how they live alongside cats and the answer is cat’s ferocious claw techniques frighten them off. They have great hearing and can hear rodents digging away underground. They make over 28 recognisable sounds which has made me want to start listening to them more closely. Last fact- they can run between 30-45 km per hour!

There is an ongoing debate about their ecological impact. It has been calculated that they save farmers 7-9 million pounds in killing rabbits, yet cost farmers 9.4 million pounds by attacking young lambs. In Australia they have decimated native mammal populations that had no natural defences. Certainly the anti-fox hunting protests showed that they are an animal that sparks strong emotions. I wonder too if, with our comfortable, manicured life indoors, they remind us of our hand to mouth nomadic past, where life was more on a knife edge, yet also more free, weaving a living under the stars.

Sussex Snowdrop Trust

Celebrating thirty years of caring for sick children by Lynn Smith Chichester based Sussex Snowdrop Trust celebrates its thirty-year anniversary this year. A unique charity providing vital nursing care for local children who are dealing with the day-to-day challenges of having a life threatening or terminal illness. Co-founder Diana Levantine tells me that the trust arose as a result of Diana and her fellow founders - Frank Snell and Kate Shaw – being made aware of the lack of support available for local families with sick children.

“In 1992 Sister Beth Connolly and Dr Ann Wallace were caring for a terminally ill child on the busy children’s ward at St Richard’s Hospital, they knew then, that there needed to be changes in provision of care, and that the child should be at home … safe and familiar place where they would be in their own bed with their family and their favourite things.” But they realised that for the child to be at home, it was crucial for the parents to be supported by a Children’s Community Nurse.

“Over the next few months Beth identified the nursing, financial and emotional support needed for all local families who were caring for a child suffering from a life-threatening illness. These needs have all been met by Snowdrop throughout the years.”

Accessing the Snowdrop Trust In 1993 Sussex Snowdrop Trust was launched and, raised enough money to fund their first Children’s Community Nurse, Jane Evans.

“Our nurses have always been at the heart of the Trust, supporting families as they teach them how to care for their child and give them the confidence to do so. Nurses can help some children by going into schools to administer medication or to check bloods, which is invaluable as children get to spend more time at school, rather than hours travelling to and from hospital. Our Counsellors are busy supporting parents and children, through phobias, anxieties, and bereavement.”

The number of children the trust supports fluctuates each year, as newly diagnosed children come onto the “Snowdrop Pathway” of care, and

others finish treatment. Today, there are between 60-70 children on the “Snowdrop Pathway.”

“From the beginning,” Diana says, “we have worked directly with the NHS. The nurses work from the NHS Children’s Services department in Chichester, so when a life-threatening condition is diagnosed, the child is automatically referred to the Care at Home Team.” The Trust helps families living within a fifteen-mile radius of Chichester, which covers - Hayling Island, Emsworth, Chichester, Bognor Regis, Selsey, Arundel, Billingshurst, Petworth and Midhurst areas.

Funding the work of the Trust The Charity’s greatest challenge, Diana tells me, is to raise the £380,000 a year needed to fund members of the Care at Home Team, and to provide financial support for families. Funds are raised through legacies, trusts and grants from local businesses and the community. Diana points out that the cost-of-living crisis has further impacted families, who may already be struggling financially, as it is usual for one parent to give up work when a child receives a life-threatening or terminal diagnosis, in order to become a carer.

“We are giving vouchers to families who need help with food costs or petrol to get their child to hospital for treatment, which costs the charity over £4,000 a month.” Also, over recent years, the charity’s volunteer base has decreased, and Diana says, “We would love to see more volunteers get involved in events.”

Offering plenty of opportunities for volunteering And, in this celebratory year there are numerous events for would-be volunteers to become involved in.

May sees the annual walk at Arundel Castle Estate Park, taking place near Hiorne Tower on Sunday 14th, when “Hundreds of supporters enjoy a 1- or 5-mile route and take in the stunning views of the South Downs.” There will be a steel pan workshop, tombola and food stalls.”

A few days later, on 18th May, Champs Hill, near Coldwaltham, is hosting a demonstration by award-winning florist, Matthew Spriggs. On 29th July the charity has “A Supercar Track Day” and there is an outdoor cinema night at Madehurst Cricket ground on 2nd September.

There is will also be special event for volunteers, to mark this landmark year. Details of all events can be found on the charity’s website.

The Trust, I assume, must have seen several changes over the last thirty years, but Diana says that “Actually for us, nothing has changed. Snowdrop families will always need help and support.

“Today,” Diana says, “most children with leukaemia, cystic fibrosis and cancer, and many other conditions, are surviving, due to extraordinary operations, new treatments and medications.

“The community has been so generous - despite particularly challenging times” When I ask how well-supported the Charity is by the local community, Diana is unequivocal, “We have incredible support from local people not only from Snowdrop families who often fundraise, as a way of giving back for the care they received, but also a wide variety of community groups, including schools and colleges.”

Mostly recently the Trust was awarded a certificate of recognition from the High Sherriff of West Sussex, James Whitmore, “In recognition of great and valuable services in the Community.” The award also recognises the appreciation of the residents and people of West Sussex. Diana says, “We receive letters of thanks from many Snowdrop families over the years, who will never forget the care they received when their child was so ill.”

Charity Profile 313 And, in this special year, there is a greater opportunity for people to be involved with the charity through its fundraising campaign: “Snowdrop’s 30 for 30!” The charity would like to encourage people to take part in their own fundraising event or challenge using the number 30 – for instance, by a 30-mile walk, bake 30cakes, 30 hours of running or just give £30 - in 2023. Anyone who has ideas or who wants to learn about volunteering opportunities can talk them through with the charity or join them for their monthly coffee morning on the first Thursday of each month at 10.30am.

When I ask Diana what she feels is the Trust’s greatest achievement, she says: “I am incredibly proud that the Snowdrop Trust is a much-loved local children’s charity and is respected in West Sussex. It is a great achievement to have been able to support hundreds of families through their most difficult times, with an outstanding Care at Home Team, for over 30 years.”

Costs of electric car charging A brief overview of the options The cost to charge an electric car in the UK varies depending on where you charge it. For those who charge their electric cars at home, it costs about £17 for a full charge, according to recent calculations. This is based on a typical electric car with a 60kWh battery and a range of approximately 200 miles. The average domestic electricity rate in the UK is around 32p per kWh, and fully charging a 60kWh electric car will cost approximately £17.

By using a dual-rate electricity tariff specifically designed for electric car drivers, you can further reduce the cost.

Charging at public locations, such as supermarkets or car parks, can be free for the duration of your stay. However, rapid charging points are typically found at motorway service stations and can cost approximately £22 for a 30-minute, 90mile charge.

It's worth noting that electric cars rarely need a "full" charge since they never get completely empty and usually just need a top-up. Charging an electric car at home is best done through a dedicated

home chargepoint, which comes with a typical one-off cost starting from £800 and has grants currently available for residents of flats - search on www.gov.uk for details.

To work out how long it takes to charge an EV from zero to 100%, all you have to do is divide the battery capacity by the speed of charging.

Home charge points typically offer speeds of 7kW, although it’s possible to get slower and faster ones. This gives you the amount of power a full charge consumes.

To give some examples of the cost of charging different electric cars at home, a Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ (2019) with a 62 kWh battery and a range of 239 miles costs £17.36 to fully charge, while a Mercedes-Benz EQE (2022) with a 100 kWh battery and a range of 394 miles costs £28.

Stansted in 1707

I am currently leading, for my Chichester HeartSmart group, a series of walks around Stansted. Not that big airport in Essex, but that big House, Forest, and Estate on the Sussex/ Hampshire border. Its Garden Centre car park and Pavilion Café make it an ideal location both to start and finish a walk, whether to Lumley Seat, or Racton Tower, or Forestside, or Rowlands Castle along the mile-long Avenue of beech and oak. The whole area, 1800 acres of ancient forest and parkland, is surprisingly rural and unspoilt, given its close proximity to built-up Portsmouth and Havant.

When I lead these walks, I like to provide some commentary on the area’s history. Stansted Forest was originally part of the much larger Forest of Bere. For over five hundred years (1071-1579) its ownership lay in the hands of the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel, who hunted stags from their base at Arundel Castle over huge swathes of forested countryside, often in the company of Kings - Henry II in 1177, Richard Lionheart in 1194, King John in 1214. The first House was essentially a hunting lodge, built on the site of the current chapel, about 220 yards south-east of the modern House. It was rebuilt in 1480, and a small portion of its original brickwork can still be seen in the chapel’s two-storey South Porch and West Door.

It was the Lumley family who owned Stansted for the next two centuries. The third Lord Lumley was created, successively, Viscount, then Baron, then Earl of Scarbrough – note the spelling - in 1689, and finally Major General in 1690, mainly for his services to the new King, William of Orange. It was Lumley who had captured the rebellious Duke of Monmouth, after his failed attempt to capture the throne in 1685. Lumley was

victorious at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, thus preventing any return by the former Catholic King James. The Lumleys also owned Lumley Castle at Chester-le-Street, County Durham, and a town-house in East Street, Chichester (which later became The Old Punch House). In Emsworth the large Lumley Mill made biscuits for the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, until it burnt down in 1915.

In 1686 a new square house, of brick, was built for the 2nd Viscount Lumley on the site of the current House. It was square, brick, with an observatory and formal gardens.

Daniel Defoe, visiting in 1724, described Stansted as ‘a house seeming to be a retreat, being surrounded with thick woods, through which there are the most pleasant, finest vistas anywhere in England’, to Portsmouth Harbour and the Royal Navy ships at Spithead’.

In subsequent years the house was often remodelled, as in 1786 when the wealthy Indian Nabob, Richard Barwell (1772/1804) had the house encased in white plaster, with airy porticoes and double-level Doric colonnades. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was hired to re-design the gardens and Park. The following owner, Lewis Way (1804/26) is best remembered for his bizarre scheme to turn Stansted into a college for the conversion of Jews to Christianity. The chapel, which in 1819 he rebuilt in Regency Gothic Revival, has a plaque with the Ten Commandments written in Hebrew, somewhat curious in an Anglican building. It was Way who created the broad Avenue over to Rowlands Castle. On the wall of Middle Lodge there is a plaque: ‘The new plantation of this avenue was commenced on the last day of the reign of King George III of blessed memory, 29th January MDCCCXX. In the past, stately mansions had a distressing tendency to get burnt down. It happened at Stansted in 1900, either as a result of faulty wiring or a mis-used blow-torch. Of the 1686 house only the vaulted cellars survived the fire. It was rebuilt in 1903 in Renaissance style by A.C. Blomfield, and still looks splendid, especially in sunshine. Cricket is still played on the Front Lawn; the first recorded match being between Slindon and Portsmouth in 1741. As for the Pavilion Tearoom’s cheese scones, they are excellent, and never burnt.

Pan fried cod fillet on creamy garlic risotto A wonderful use of May’s wild garlic Ingredients - Serves 4 • 4 fillets of cod, 180 – 200g • Approximately 900ml chicken or veg stock • 2 teaspoons of unsalted butter • 2 shallots or 1 small onion • 250g risotto rice • 100ml dry white wine • Bunch of wild garlic, about 30-40g: washed, dried and chopped • 50g parmesan cheese • Watercress to garnish Method 1. Finely chop the shallot or onion, and cook until translucent in 1 teaspoon of butter. Add the rice, stir well and cook for about 2 minutes.

2. Pour in the wine and let it bubble until evaporated.

3. Start adding the stock, one ladleful at a time.

Only add the next ladle of stock when the last one has been almost entirely absorbed by the rice.

4. Continue adding stock and stirring until the rice is cooked through, approximately 25-30 minutes.

The rice should be tender but still firm to the bite.

5. While the risotto cooks grate the parmesan and set aside.

6. Season the cod fillets and sear in a hot pan, skin side down, until the skin is crispy – approx. 3 minutes. Finish in the oven at 180 ℃ for 10 minutes.

7. Once the rice is tender, add the cheese and remaining butter. Add the wild garlic and stir well, until the leaves are wilted. Season.

Serve the cod on top of the risotto, with a handful of watercress, some crème fraiche on the side, and a charred lemon.

Children embracing our whole-school ethos of ‘FAB’ (Flourishing, Achieving and Believing) while ‘living life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).

We are so lucky to be at the very centre of the South Downs National Park with easy access to all of these amazing places, within our locality.

Years 5 and 6 rounded off their Peace and Conflict topic by inviting Erik the Viking in to visit. He was very impressed by their knowledge of the Saxons and Vikings. Erik taught the children

We have also been busy in school raising over £1000 for Comic Relief as part of our Red Nose Day. Each class had a sponsored activity ranging from scooting, to joke telling to (almost impossible sounding) silence! In addition to this we had a whole-school joke telling competition with winners from each class going forward to assembly.

The competition gives young artists across the Group’s secondary academies and independent schools the chance for their artwork to be exhibited in Tokyo.

The Return of the Terns

“It’s summer, you never saw such a blue sky / And here they are, those white birds with quick wings / Sweeping over the waves, chattering and plunging / Their thin beaks snapping, their hard eyes / Happy as little nails” - In her poem ‘Terns’, Mary Oliver evokes the pleasure of sun, sea breeze and the absorbing joy of watching terns.

If you take a stroll through Pagham Harbour at this time of year, you will undoubtedly see terns ‘chattering and plunging’. Look out for Little and Sandwich Terns who have undertaken a long migration from Africa to breed here in the UK, arriving in April / May, leaving in September / October.

Terns are slender, graceful birds, generally with white or pale grey wings and a black cap. On first appearance they may seem much the same but some of the little differences make it fun to try and distinguish them: The Sandwich Tern has black legs and a black beak with a yellow tip; the Little Tern has yellow/orange legs and a yellow beak with a black tip. The Roseate Tern has red legs and a black beak with red at the base, whereas the Common Tern has red legs and a red beak with black at the tip - the Artic Tern is very similar to the Common but has a completely red bill. It might take a while to remember all these details! Although you are unlikely to see Roseate or Arctic Terns at Pagham harbour, there have been some rare sightings in the area.

Common Terns breed along the coast at Langstone Harbour.

Pagham Harbour is an important breeding ground for Little Terns, which can also be identified by the distinctive white forehead on their black caps. As they are social birds you may see a flock rise up together to see off predators.

They nest on the beach, making shallow scrapes in which to lay their eggs, and are consequently particularly vulnerable to predators from both ground and the sky: Foxes, badgers, crows and gulls all have some interest in finding eggs or chicks to feed upon. Flooding as a result of rising spring tides has also been a factor in dwindling numbers and from 2000 to 2015 there was an 18% decline.

This has been addressed with the LIFE+ project aimed at increasing the numbers of breeding pairs of terns. Three ‘Tern Islands’ have been constructed from shingle creating ideal habitats for the terns to breed.

Humans and canines have also posed a significant threat to the success of tern colonies, which has led to the construction of predator fences. It is important that visitors to the area do not pass these fences to walk on the islands. It is also vital that people keep their dogs on leads; adult Little Terns will abandon their nest if they’ve been disturbed, leaving chicks and nests vulnerable. The good news is, there has been an increase in fledgling Little Terns since the project’s inception, and last year a record 26 Little Terns hatched – let’s see what this year brings.

The other tern you are likely to see at Pagham Harbour is the Sandwich Tern, named after the Kent town where they were first observed in the 18th century. These terns are a similar size to black-headed gulls but have more slender bodies and long elegant wings. Like other terns, they (mostly) mate for life. A male who arrives at a colony without a mate will try to demonstrate his prowess to the female by flying above and bringing her fish. You may also see two terns preforming a courtship ritual of mutual head-bowing and stretching. Last year was also a good one for breeding Sandwich Terns - 148 fledglings hatched at Pagham Harbour.

Perhaps the final line in Mary Oliver’s poem perfectly sums up the cathartic, mesmerising impact of tern watching: “And you find, for hours, you cannot remember the questions that weigh so heavily in your mind.” www.rspb.org.uk/paghamharbour
