Editor’s Comment February is the month of love, I’m told.

So what better time to combine this month’s wedding feature (pages 50-55) with one of my alltime favourite landmarks. It may be silly but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Ouse Valley Viaduct at Balcombe, that majestic structure that says ‘welcome to Sussex’ like nothing else. So when I came across Lisa Phillpot’s irreverent ‘Rock the Frock’ bridal photoshoot taken right underneath its fabulous arches, I just knew we had to have it in the magazine (page 55).

I’m so pleased that Lisa (www. martletphotography.co.uk), Nan (the bride) and Bren (her groom) gave their permission. And doesn’t it make a spectacular cover! For those who can’t wait to see the Viaduct up close for themselves, may I recommend our Balcombe Viaduct Walk on pages 56-57.

We sent Ruth Lawrence to Caxton Manor in Forest Row for the last in our Home Sweet Home series. This is a country house with bags of history and oodles of timeless charm. Find out more on page 26-28.

Have you ever wondered about local heroines in our area? Dame Margery Corbett Ashby was a truly remarkable lady. From her

family roots in Danehill, she went on to become a politician and fighter for women’s rights here as well as abroad. Later in life, she founded the Danehill Parish Historical Society. Steve Ramsey tells the story (pages 42-45).

Welcome to Hanna Lindon, our new writer, who went to find evidence of Roman history and came back with a fascinating account of The Greensand Way, a Roman road that cut right through Mid Sussex (pages 9-13). In the

footsteps of the Romans The old Greensand Way cuts through the heart of Mid Sussex and was once an important Roman highway.

Exploring this elusive ancient road and the sites that surround it makes for a fascinating day out.

Stonepound Crossroads in Hassocks feels like just another urban junction. Standing on the kerb with the traffic filtering past in every direction, it’s hard to believe that this was once the intersection of two important Roman roads and the site of a busy 2ndcentury posting station (where travellers could change horses). Where are the ancient ruins? I wonder, watching the lights flash from red to amber to green. Where are the signs that this used to be the centre of a thriving Classical community?

Beside me, Plumpton-based archaeologist David Millum shrugs apologetically. “That’s the curse of archaeology – and also its joy,” he says.

“You could be walking over Roman remains every day, and most of the time you wouldn’t have a clue.”

Millum and his colleague David Rudling, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Sussex, are both authorities on the Roman presence in Mid

Sussex. Between them, they have presided over several of the area’s most important digs and discoveries, and their conversation overflows with tantalising historical tidbits. Within an hour of meeting them, I’ve learnt that the famous Jolly Sportsman pub in East Chiltington is built over the line of a Roman road, that there’s an unexcavated Roman villa at Plumpton, and that the house I’ve lived in for years is a prime site for a possible villa (“you should try digging a trench in your garden,” suggests Millum enthusiastically.)

I’ve been lucky enough to secure these two local experts as my guides for a five-mile walk that weaves around the line of the old Greensand Way. This east-west Roman road ran from Stane Street at Hardham (near Pulborough) to Barcombe in East Sussex continued on next page

and once linked several well-to-do farming estates.

It’s around 25 miles long in total, but our aim today is to explore the Hassocks to East Chiltington leg.

We begin at Stonepound Crossroads, where the only clue to the area’s Roman origins lies in the name. “Where you see ‘Stane’ or ‘Stone’ in a name, it often indicates the presence of a Roman road,” explains Rudling. “This crossroads would have been the intersection of the north-south London to Brighton Way, which was built to bring iron down from the workings at Crawley to the farming estates in Sussex, and the Greensand Way.” Just to the south of the crossroads, behind a line of substantial modern houses, is an old Roman

It was mostly destroyed by sand extraction in the late 19th century, but not before more than 150 virtually complete burial urns were recovered from the area. The sheer scale of the site shows that Hassocks would have been an important Roman centre – not just a posting station where you could bespeak a bed for the night and a change of horses, but a small town complete with residential ribbon development, shops and possibly even a bathhouse.

From here, the line of the Greensand Way is thought to have run directly east through to Keymer, although part of the allure of this elusive road is that nobody can identify its route with absolute precision. The closest estimation comes from a book written in the 1940s by archaeologist Ivan Margary called Roman Ways in the Weald.

Margary’s road runs true as an arrow all the way from Hassocks to Barcombe, but Millum and Rudling now believe there are ‘kinks’ in the line that challenge the common conception of Roman roads as perfectly straight. For the modernday walker, the only option is to divert through www.sussexliving.com

As we amble through Ditchling and towards Streat – a name that clearly indicates the presence of a Roman road – I ask the two Davids how the landscape in Mid Sussex would have changed since Roman times. I was expecting to hear that the area was heavily wooded and plagued by raiding

tribesman, but not a bit of it. The Downs and their surroundings, says Rudling, would have been largely given over to pastureland and crops. In fact, more of the Downs was ploughed up in Roman Britain than it was during any other period up until the First World War. As you headed north towards Haywards Heath and Balcombe, you might have encountered thicker woodland, but the picture I’m gradually assimilating in my head is one of a peaceful bucolic landscape dotted with small farmsteads and thriving crossroad communities – not unlike the Sussex of the Georgians.

And just as Georgian manors were built back from the road in the heart of their own country estates, so the wealthier citizens of Roman Britain liked to locate their villas away from the hustle and bustle of the main trade route.

“You can see the site of the Plumpton villa from here,” said Millum, stopping us at a section of the track that runs between Streat and Plumpton Racecourse.

The Plumpton villa may have had a hypocaust system The villa is yet to be excavated, but initial surveys show that its wall footings were made from flint and chalk and the interior walls were decorated with painted plaster. There may even have been a hypocaust system for underfloor heating – and the inhabitants were wealthy enough to have afforded choice items like fine table wares and Samian vessels. To imagine it as a classic Mediterranean villa complete with atrium and olive trees, though, would be a mistake. If this was anything like the larger site found further down the Greensand Way at Barcombe, it would have looked more like a stately medieval manor house, complete with two storeys, chimneys, and a sturdy tiled roof.

The bridleway that runs just to the north of the villa follows the exact route of the old road.

Raised up on an agger (a Roman embankment) and flanked by drainage ditches, its appearance has barely changed since Roman times.

then on to the village of East Chiltington – now a tiny hamlet but once the site of a large Roman pottery operation. You can still see the site close to Wickham Barn where excavations found three ancient industrial kilns.

It’s tempting to trace the road all the way to its conclusion

at Barcombe, but that’s a story for another day. Instead, we loop round to the Half Moon pub at Plumpton where the 824 bus is waiting to take us back to Hassocks. “Don’t forget to dig that trench,” says Millum as we shake hands. Now where did I put my spade…

These beautiful birds are winter visitors to the UK from Scandinavia, who come to our shores in search of milder weather and to seek out food in the form of berries.

It is so gratifying to record these on the Reserve, as considerable

This ongoing work of habitat creation is really showing results now, with many new species of birds, butterflies, flowering plants, amphibians and reptiles all being recorded in recent years. With more volunteer help, even more environmental projects could be undertaken to continue and extend this good work.

Lingfield Nature Reserve was only the second Parish Council managed Reserve to be granted official ‘Local Nature Reserve’ status

by English Nature, and is still one of only a handful of parish-based nature reserves in the UK. It is an important

local resource for wildlife close to the centre of Lingfield village and freely available all year round to local residents and regular visitors.

Pyecombe Church The Steering Committee for the Pyecombe Church Building Fund are delighted to announce that we have already raised £56,000 towards our £138,000 total needed to complete the extension to Pyecombe Church.

Much of the money has come from donations from the local community, fundraising events and our great eBay sale. We are also applying to large trusts for their support with bids being put together with the help of our fundraising team.

Already in 2013 we have been awarded £20,000 from The Sustainable Communities Fund (SCF). The SCF is a £700,000 grant fund run by the South Downs National Park Authority. Any partnership, voluntary group or other not-for-profit organisation can apply for funding if they believe their project is bringing social, environmental, economic or cultural benefits to a community within the National Park.

Andy Gattiker, South Downs Way National Trail Officer said, “I fully support the project to extend the church to provide toilet and kitchen facilities that would then be open to passing users of the SDW. It is also a great opportunity to make people aware of the Churches special features and long history”.

The Disabilities Trust The latest annual review has just been published for this leading UK charity based in Burgess Hill. It includes an article about Naomi, a local service user in Lindfield.

Naomi (pictured right) left school at 18 and worked as a fishmonger in a supermarket.

She loved writing radio scripts and used to read insatiably. At the age of 22, Naomi had a mental breakdown, then had to wait six years for a diagnosis of autism.

The effect on her family was devastating – relief at diagnosis, but anxiety about the future.

Shortly after her diagnosis, social services advised Naomi’s parents to contact The Disabilities Trust, who operate national services, providing quality care, rehabilitation and support for people with acquired brain injury, physical disabilities, learning disabilities and autism.

Naomi was assessed and

accepted into the Autism Spectrum Partners service at Hollyrood, in Lindfield. Initially, she needed 2:1 staff support and, when she arrived, had a loss of memory and had virtually lost all speech.

It took a whole year for the autism-specific trained staff at Hollyrood, with the help of the local psychiatrist, to get Naomi off the psychotropic drugs she had been prescribed, and she is now on a very small dose. Both her thyroid and pancreas have been severely affected by these drugs, so she is now diabetic with an under-active thyroid.

Her life has changed completely. The drugs are now affecting her less and she is able to get involved with walks, dancing, knitting, housework and cooking, all of which has been done with the help of the staff.

The team at Hollyrood supported

her, working out a routine of life skills and activities which included drumming – for which Naomi has a real talent.

Much emphasis at Hollyrood is given to enabling service users to develop independent lifestyles, and to this end Naomi is now living in Community Housing, also provided by The Disabilities Trust, in Haywards Heath.

Gradually, in the words of her mother Vicky, the real shades of the old Naomi have returned.

She now enjoys regular meetings with her four sisters, and the only worry is the uncertainty of funding to keep Naomi where she wants to be.

Vicky says: “Naomi has come a long way, which has been only possible by the fantastic input, love and care from her carers and the staff. There is heaven on

earth and The Disabilities Trust provided it.”

Vicky has worked tirelessly to raise money to support The Disabilities Trust; she has already raised almost £3,000 for the Trust and has set herself an initial target of £5,000. What better way to relieve the gloom of a winter afternoon than to experience the joy of a Vivace concert in beautiful and historic surroundings? The Friends of the Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield, are pleased to announce that the celebrated Sussex-based choir Vivace will be giving a concert on 24 February at 2.30pm in the church. All proceeds will be added to the Friends’ funds for the future maintenance of the fabric of the church.

Vivace has built up a distinguished reputation over the last decade in Sussex and further afield for the high quality of their choral performances.

The sheer versatility of their repertoire is breathtaking. In recent performances they have delighted concert-goers with sacred music such as the 5th-century Gregorian chant Ubi Caritas together with the haunting Belle-Epoque Pavane

The acoustics of the church are superbly suited to choral performances and previous appearances by Vivace have been very warmly received, meaning that this concert is likely to be a sell-out.

The first target was achieved when the Fairtrade group in Burgess Hill became a registered charity in November 2012. It’s believed to be the first town Fairtrade group to obtain charitable status. Robert feels that this will help to open doors. “As a charity, our activities are governed by law, we are required to have trustees, and our finances are monitored by the Charities Commission. It puts a structure around us and the corporate status should give organisations that deal with us real comfort”.

Burgess Hill’s Fairtrade vision includes spreading the campaign to neighbouring towns and parishes in Mid Sussex. “I see no reason why Albourne, Hurstpierpoint, Keymer, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield,

Ansty and Lindfield shouldn’t form groups and work towards Fairtrade status for their village or town. Burgess Hill wants to work with people in these areas to help make this happen.”

You ask why? “It’s simple,” says Robert. “The little steps we take for Fairtrade in our communities help to make big changes in the wider world. As more people take these little steps, by buying Fairtrade products, lives are changed at a faster rate.”

That is what Fairtrade does. We use fair trading rules to help build sustainable communities in developing countries. Fairtrade also returns a social premium to these communities so that they can invest in essential skills and facilities. Britain can be proud that it leads the way in the trade justice movement.”

Jade trains at K2 in Crawley and Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in Horsham, where she also works part time, but she may be unique in that she has her own training throwing ‘circle’ on a farm locally, where she is very careful in throwing away from the assorted cows, sheep and even alpacas! Her father was a keen cyclist in his time, so Jade had no hesitation in accepting the invitation to fire the starting gun for the 2013 Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride.

Margaret recalls that the idea the group had, right at the beginning, for a ‘village full of talent’, has developed amazingly in the eight years of the Festival’s life; it has entertained thousands of people, involved hundreds of performers and artists, dozens of volunteer helpers, and spread two weeks of fun and happiness for the whole community. “That’s all it exists for and I think we have delivered pretty well,” she adds.

Asked for her favourite moment: “the idea of having small evening concerts – our “soiree series” in private houses has really taken off and is unique in my experience”, she explains, recalling how generous it is of people to allow 30 or more visitors into their homes to listen to all sorts of good music! “The

Margaret remains a Festival trustee and promises to do all she can to support the 2013 committee.

Fellow trustee Shaughan Parish said Margaret will be a hard act to follow as she brought fairness, fun, compassion, support, selflessness, insight, integrity and energy to the community not-for-profit festival.

Margaret has been involved in Hurst Festival ever since she made a remark to her husband, Kevin and dinner guests about the wealth of talent there is to be found in and around the midSussex village, and her husband said, “create a Festival to display it, then.”

Margaret and one of the guests, the soon to be founder chair, took the idea forward, formed a committee and voilá, Hurst Festival was born. That was nine years ago and Margaret’s ‘can do’ attitude has been the driving force of Hurst Festival ever since and her positivity is deeply embedded in the spirit of it.

“Despite being passionate about the village and its Festival, Margaret has never claimed ownership of it; but has formed a strong and lasting foundation for a Festival that is very firmly set in the community...the whole community”, says Shaughan Parish. “It is this altruistic passion

for the Festival that has led her to step down as chair, ever mindful of the need for new ideas.”

Sport, Music and Drama, all subjects that in recent years have declined in importance in many of our schools, are very popular, and every child has the opportunity to represent the school in a competitive sport, act in a school production and sing with the choir. In fact, on the day after my visit, the choir was off to the O2 arena to give a concert with 7,000 other children.

Blooming Times Are you engaged in a perennial power struggle with your wisteria?

Fear not,

February is the ideal time to do something about it.

I reckon there’s more unnecessarily complicated nonsense written about wisteria pruning than any other subject. Simply put: if you can’t open your windows and your TV reception is terrible, on account of the wisteria curling around the aerial, then you need to find the secateurs. Remember, it could be worse; at least wisteria is thornless!

Winter’s bare stems mean you can clearly see the plant’s structure and the available space. Be bold – remember you’re in charge. Left unpruned, a vigorous wisteria will eventually romp over a quarter of an acre, woodlands being their natural habitat. What you are trying to achieve are ‘spurs’ of short stems, no more than a couple of buds in length, which will bear the flowers. Long growths that were made last summer can be wound in or removed entirely.

When buying a new plant, make sure it’s in flower and avoid those ‘generous’ gifts of anonymous seedlings from friends, for wisteria is one plant that can be devilish to coax into bloom. However, once settled into a routine, they make reliable, stately plants that could easily outlive us all.

There are a few jobs that can be carried out on the veg patch this month. Never stand directly on sodden ground, but if you’re able to keep to a path or board, early sowings of broad beans and carrots can be made under cloches.

Some general tidying, sorting through that messy pile of bamboo canes you abandoned in October,

and checking over garden tools will save valuable time in March and April. If the soil surface is dry enough, deal with weeds now; a sharp hoe will make short work of them when they’re small.

A greenhouse comes into its own in February, allowing you to spend happy hours in relative comfort, chitting potatoes, sowing lettuce and removing dead leaves from overwintering geraniums.

Light levels increase daily now; watch out for new shoots emerging from dormant begonias and dahlias, and forced bulbs will need checking regularly. These tasks may be conveniently employed as excuses when being asked to help with housework. Make a crafty cuppa and, whistling casually, slope off down to the greenhouse…

Forest Row is a place to expect

surprise, extraordinary people and unusual stories. i found all of the above at Caxton Manor.

Historic charm Having heard about Caxton Manor and its evocative Japanese garden, I wanted to find out more about the unusual history of the house. A loud “wow” was my first impression as I swung through the gate which opens onto a vista of lake, towering trees and the perfectly placed timber-framed house.

Adele and Jules Speelman have lived here for 32 years, having chanced upon it after being gazumped on a number of properties – a blessing in disguise, as it turned out, for the couple instantly fell in love with the beauty of the house and its 4 1/2 acre grounds. As Adele talked me through the house’s history, I began to realise just how unusual it was. The oldest part of the building began life in 15th century Kent.

Allegedly the birthplace of William Caxton, who was born around 1420, the original house lay in the Manor of Hadlow and was dismantled and moved to its present location in 1936.

Caxton not only introduced the printing press to England, he was the first English printer and book retailer and he was accredited with standardising the English language. Why the house was moved remains a mystery, but on its arrival it was rechristened Millwood Manor, only reverting to

its original title at a later date. Although this part is nearly 600 years old, local builders H and E Waters built the rest in the late 1930s and their skill made the two parts virtually indistinguishable.

Another famous resident lived here in the 1950s: Sir Archibald Macindoe, the pioneering plastic surgeon who helped to treat countless young pilots who had been horrifically burned during the war. Macindoe realised how the psychological scars resulting from their injuries could alienate the heroes from the very people they had fought to save. He asked the people of East Grinstead to invite the men into their homes, something which proved a groundbreaking boost to their eventual rehabilitation. I could imagine him striding round the garden, gaining internal nourishment from these idyllic surroundings to help him deal with the suffering he must have witnessed in his work.

When Adele and Jules moved here, trees obscured much of the garden and were thinned out to reveal the long view across the lake; more fell naturally in the great hurricane of 1987. The house became visible from the road and Adele remembers a sixyear-old boy who insisted that his mother bring him to the front door because he had told her, “I love that house” and would not rest until he had visited it!

are open for two National Gardens Scheme days in May. Visitors can see how she has used acers, azaleas and mature rhododendrons to perfect the Japanese theme of the garden. Inspired during a trip to Japan, Adele fell in love with the serene moss gardens that encompass numerous shades of green texture to symbolise landscape on a small scale.

Reflections from the water bring the sky down among the trees and three resident ducks glide about together while a waterfall cascades down rocks into the lake. A Japanese tea house overlooks the water and provides seating for guests to find their own inspiration while enjoying tea with a view.

Three years ago, Adele created a geometric Japanese gravel courtyard at the rear of the house, which stays true to the eastern ideal of a scaled-down landscape contained within formal boundaries. It works perfectly with the exposed timber frame of the house – lines leading the eye down the building’s wall and along the ground towards the courtyard centre.

Although the house is not open for viewing, Adele showed me the galleried interior of the ancient original room; a monochrome estate agents’ brochure from the middle of last century shows that little has changed and the room retains its grandeur while remaining seductively homely. continued on next page SuSSex Living February 2013

Outside, notches on the timbers give clues to Caxton Manor’s past. Oak ships’ beams have been incorporated into the house, reminding us that recycling was once standard practise during construction of a building.

The gardens exude a feeling of calm; perhaps the place knows how loved it is and reflects the tranquillity back to the visitor. One of the best viewpoints is from a gently arching bridge from where the house and lake can be enjoyed in one sweeping glance, the effect magnified through reflection in the water. The ducks, who obviously recognize a place that is too good to leave, have their own house in the centre of the lake and even a branchless tree trunk has been transformed into a sculpture of wooden bulrushes by a local artist.

People remember this house. 20 years ago, Adele remembers a man visiting who had carved the upstairs balustrades and wanted to see how his work had evolved within the building.

While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée’s family, nostalgic screenwriter Gil (Owen Wilson) falls head over heels in love with the city and thinks they should move there after they get married, but his fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) doesn’t share his romantic notions of Paris.

Wanting to explore more of the city, he declines the after-dinner social whirl Inez wants to indulge in and takes himself off for evening walks, where, every night at midnight, he finds himself mysteriously taken back to the 1920s, meeting the literary and artistic icons of the time and a woman who steals his heart.

This film is not just a love story between the protagonists; it’s a love letter to Paris. As with Woody Allen’s equally adoring love letter to New York, Manhattan, the film opens with a montage of shots of the city set to jazz. Every shot of this sensuously filmed, emotionally charged movie is beautifully composed, capturing the look and feel of 60s Hong Kong perfectly. Stunning performances of subtlety and compassion from the leads (Leung won Best Actor at Cannes) are backed up by a terrific cast of supporting characters. Evoking the anguished romance of Brief Encounter, In The Mood For Love casts a spell from the opening frame to the last.

Starring Nicolas Cage and Cher (in an Oscar winning performance), this romantic comedy established once and for all that Cher can act. Moonstruck is a warm and affectionate picture of Italian-American life with the odd quirky touch which prevents it from being too sickly.

When there’s a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighbourhood as each character is awakened into passion. Loretta (Cher) finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for Ronnie (Nicolas Cage), the brother of the man she agreed to marry. The characters in Moonstruck really do feel like a family and it is pure joy to watch them interact. There is one famous scene where Loretta, after a night with Ronnie, walks home kicking a can across the street, completely lost in the bliss of being in love – just marvellous.

I asked a friend recently to name her favourite romantic film, and without hesitation she replied “Moonstruck – it’s a really lovely film, romantic and not at all gooey.” A feel good movie for Valentine’s Day.

Sewing and craft workshops February is supposed to be the gloomiest month of the year; no longer the dark, crisp nights of real winter, nor yet the first stirrings of spring. However, we won’t despair because ‘lurve’ is in the air. I often think if St Valentine’s Day hadn’t fallen in midFebruary, it would have been necessary to invent something similarly romantic just to keep our spirits up and to provide the card and gift industries with something to do to fill in the gap between Christmas and Easter.

What I remember as the time of year when cards arrived containing unsigned expressions of undying passion, has now become an occasion for a full-on present-giving extravaganza. The ritual of Valentine’s cards used to excite both wild surmise and misidentification, and I don’t know if that mystery still exists or if it has been taken over by Twitter, Facebook et al.

Actually, my wife would think I’m a fine one to talk about romantic mysteries, as she correctly identified the flowers I brought into the hospital on the birth of our daughter as the same flowers I’d given her on Valentine’s Day some 48 hours earlier. Well, they were just sitting on the piano, not doing anything and I did re-wrap them! Flowers, of course, are the really safe option for men on almost any occasion, but especially on Valentine’s Day when websites tempt one to send or purchase ‘original’ romantic gifts, which can often turn out not to be quite as welcome as anticipated. We’re not talking matching coffee mugs here and, apparently, humorous underwear isn’t all that funny. Who knew?

And if safe but thoughtful options are sought, the romantic candlelit dinner for two is always the one to go for as long as you and the restaurant proprietor share the same sense of taste and restraint. Discreet service and individual roses are good, a Mexican Mariachi band circulating while you eat is bad.

Candlelight is always kind though, and once when there was a major power cut during our St Valentine’s Dinner in a local pub, it became vitally necessary. We actually ended up eating a romantic curry brought in from a nearby takeaway – but it was the thought that counted.

yourself Remember when you were a child and being physical was, largely, what made you happy? Turning cartwheels, sitting frog-legged, swinging on monkey bars, doing a bridge – nothing seemed difficult. We used our bodies naturally, joyfully and without instruction. I remember the pleasure of a full stretch as clearly as the stillness of mind last experienced 40 years ago when life was uncluttered and there was time to be bored.

How different adult life has turned out to be.

Now, when we want fast physical results, we head off to the gym, do exercise classes and go on a diet – anything that can be slotted into hectic daily schedules built around the seemingly ceaseless demands of work and family. The more we can pack into a busy day, the more productive we feel and, say what you like, most of us thrive on the adrenaline kick we get from achieving results.

So, how does yoga fit in?

Not so long ago, I regarded yoga as a bit of an indulgence, frankly, a hobby for those with too much time on their hands and an

interest in esoterica – so what’s changed?

My life is still the same; no major shifts have occurred except the seismic one in my mind. Put bluntly, I’ve stopped putting myself last.

Now, in my middle youth, I want to spend time getting to know myself again, to step off the hamster wheel for just a little while and forget the din of the day for just long enough to reconnect with what’s real.

With the help of Mel, my yoga teacher, I am gradually becoming aware of each part of my body, what it can do and what it has yet to (re-)learn. It’s an exciting journey and Mel is my guide and inspiration. Setting time aside each week is balm for the soul as well as the body. Nothing else matters for the duration of the session – except me! It’s a powerful restorative tonic that sets me up for the entire week – making me mentally stronger to cope with the daily demands, physically grounded in this one precious life that I have, and emotionally happier to be who I am today.

Local herbalist Sarah Furey shares her knowledge and remedies for treating hands and feet in the cold weather.

Herbs for Health The skin on our hands and feet suffers in the cold weather, so what can we do to treat ailments such as chapped skin and chilblains? I make a Calendula and Chamomile salve which I keep near the kitchen sink. The advantage of a salve over a cream is that it is waterproof (great for nappy rash on babies’ bottoms too!).

Calendula is a great skin healer as it promotes ‘epithelialisation’ or skin cell growth. It also has antibacterial properties. Chamomile is a powerful antiinflammatory herb, great for soothing any soreness.

This salve is also a welcome relief for dry and cracked skin on the heels of your feet, particularly in the summer.

And what about chilblains? The best preventative herb I know is a cup of ginger tea every day, which will improve your blood circulation. Fresh grated or chopped ginger is best, but a good quality ginger tea bag will do. I also use a chilblain foot oil of mustard and ginger, which is also great for sore, aching muscles.

Calendula & Chamomile Salve 50g dried Calendula petals 50g dried Chamomile flower heads 200g mild organic olive oil 40g Beeswax, chopped into small pieces 10 drops Lavender essential oil 1. Put both ingredients into a bain-marie (or bowl over hot water) and heat gently for 2 hours, making sure the water in the pan does not dry out.

2. Strain the oil through some muslin or an old pair of tights.

3. Return the infused oil to the pan with the beeswax. Heat gently until the wax has melted, then take off the heat and let cool.

4. Add the lavender oil, pour the salve into clean jars and label.

5. Rub into skin as required.

Mustard Foot Oil 500g sunflower oil or mild olive oil 50g mustard powder 50g crushed/ grated fresh ginger root 1. Put all the ingredients together into a bain-marie. Heat gently for an hour.

2. Once cooled, strain through a sieve and bottle.

3. Rub the oil gently into your toes (or sore muscles) morning and evening. Do make sure you keep the oil away from your eyes, and don’t use on broken skin.

NB: You can use any ‘hot’ spices for this recipe – chilli powder or black pepper work well too.

CAuTION: Always consult a qualified health care professional if you are unsure of any medical symptoms.

I’m surrounded by runners. One friend’s just joined an allfemale club (“It’s called Fit Bitch. I cringe every time I have to say that name!”). Another is training for a marathon, while a new acquaintance is preparing for the Brighton Half (“I was genuinely the sort of person who would just laugh at joggers – get a bus, you idiot! But I love it.”)

At a recent Christmas party, a seasoned runner, wearing a fez and flowery shirt, gave me some interesting advice. To build up your running pace, he said, go to a track and run ten sets of 400m, with breaks in between. Don’t try and run each one as fast as you can, but go at a fast-ish speed you can keep up for all ten sets.

At that point, I was three weeks into my training regime, and it was already getting repetitive.

Running is basically the same every time, unless, say, you’re running in the woods and come face-to-face with a man in a yeti suit – which did happen to me once. (The wood is a hotspot for ‘live-action roleplaying games’, apparently.)

For variation, I had tried running in fast-thenslow intervals, as the training programme suggests.

However, because my ‘fast’ isn’t much different from my ‘slow’, this took some concentration. As soon as I got distracted, which happened regularly, I forgot whether I was running fast or slow, and looking at my feet for clues proved useless. After a week, I gave up the pretence of ‘interval training’.

Then I tried something new. Taking the fezwearer’s advice, I did laps round the block, trying to keep up a decent pace. Dame Margery Corbett Ashby (1882-1981) grew up in the village of Danehill but her political

activities influenced the political scene both nationally and abroad. “Probably no one has done more for the emancipation of women during the [20th] century,” said her obituary in The Times.

womankind Dame Margery Corbett Ashby was the first President of the Danehill Parish Historical Society, which was founded in the 1970s. A few years later, she had to miss a meeting, and called Society member Hylda Rawlings to make her excuses. “Going on holiday?”

Hylda asked. “Not exactly. I’m going to Turkey.

There’s a world council of women there.” She would be addressing them, in a room about the size of the Albert Hall.

“But why?” continued Hylda. “Well, they think I was responsible for getting the Turkish women the vote. I was at a dinner party, and was put next to the Ataturk. We were talking quite casually together and I just said to him ‘you’re such an enlightened ruler who has done so much for your country; I do wonder why you haven’t ever given your women the vote’. He made some quite noncommittal remark and changed the conversation, but four months later, Turkish women got it.” “Is anybody going with you?” Hylda asked.

“My son is going to take me to the airport, and I’ll be met with an interpreter when I get there,” she replied. “Doesn’t your family worry about you?”

“Oh yes, my dear, they do, but if you can’t do what you like when you’re 94, you never will, you know.”

Remarkably active until shortly before her death in 1981, aged 99, Margery Corbett Ashby devoted her long life to the cause of women’s rights. After Dame Millicent Fawcett died in 1929, Dame Ashby became “the accepted, if invincibly modest, leader

in Britain in the cause of women’s rights,” The Times wrote. Or, as Dame Ashby put it: “I was in the thick of it all. I have had everything thrown at me, including dried haddock.”

She spent her childhood in Danehill, in a manor house now occupied by Cumnor House School.

Her wealthy parents, as Liberals, were “regarded as traitors to their class,” Dame Ashby said.

Her father, Charles Henry Corbett, was an “exceptionally wise and well read” barrister who was elected Liberal MP for East Grinstead in 1906, to great local surprise in this safe Conservative seat.

He and his wife were keen advocates of women’s rights, and Charles was “described in the House of Commons as the best friend women had there,” Dame Ashby said.

Dame Ashby’s mother Marie, “with her daughters, was often seen in East Grinstead High Street calling for women’s suffrage,” Ann Kramer writes in Sussex Women. At one suffrage meeting, “some 1,500 people turned up to hear Marie and two other speakers, but mayhem broke out when youths started pelting them with eggs, tomatoes and stones. As the speakers ran for safety to a neighbouring house, the police stood by inactive, helping only when the mob began breaking into the house.”

When some women got the vote in 1918, Marie switched her energies to saving children from the workhouse, placing dozens of kids with foster families. Marie “used to pay 10 shillings a week for their keep,” Hylda Rawlings says. “On a Saturday morning, Marie would have a big pile of ten shilling notes. She’d go out to all these foster houses, giving them ten shillings. Dame Ashby said she’d had letters from people all over the world, saying they’d

never have had any sort of start in life if it hadn’t been for her mother.”

In 1904, Marie took Margery to Germany for the inaugural conference of the International Alliance of Women. Margery found it “absolutely thrilling” and later served as the group’s Honorary Secretary for 23 years. She was also honorary editor of International Women’s News, cofounder of the Townswomen’s Guild, twice president of the Women’s Liberal Foundation, and national secretary of the constitutional suffrage movement.

Dame Ashby was a nonviolent suffragist, rather than a militant suffragette. Though she considered the Pankhursts “extremely brilliant”, Dame Ashby said she “thought it was stupid to challenge men on the only ground in which it’s absolutely obvious that we’re inferior… physical strength.” Instead, she preferred rational argument. “I thought it was not a good qualification for the vote to burn down houses and put bombs in letterboxes.”

Winning a reasoned argument on the issue was not exactly difficult, Dame Ashby felt. “I think that people who did not live through that time cannot imagine just how silly some of the arguments against female suffrage really were. I recall years later at a

fashionable dinner in Rome… I was seated next to a nice little Duke who said ‘but Miss Ashby, don’t you think a woman’s place is in the home?’”

Hylda Rawlings says of such comments: “She wasn’t so much angry as sorry for their ignorance, that anybody could be so silly as to make a remark like that. She was all for women doing as much as possible. During the war if a woman wanted to drive a tank she’d say ‘oh good’!”

Dame Ashby stood for parliament seven or eight times, “as a liberal in invariably hopeless constituencies,” The Times said. “Her aim was not so much to become an MP as to get public opinion to accept women candidates and to publicize the causes she cared about,” according to the Dictionary of National Biography. Dame Ashby’s son Michael wrote: “Bury St Edmunds was a very safe Tory seat, but my mother was horrified to find large numbers of cottages on the estates of wealthy race horse owners, with only outdoor sanitation and no running water. Her scathing condemnations were ill received by the Tory landowners, but nevertheless won her resounding ovations at her election meetings. Doubtless, many a cottage got its water and WC as a result of the turmoil and press publicity which followed.”

In Horsted Keynes, where she lived for 45 years, Dame Ashby was a near neighbour of former PM Harold Macmillan. Hylda Rawlings says: “He had a very nice chauffeur-driven car, and when they were going to the same events, he used to give her a lift. He would come in and say ‘where’s the Dame, where’s the Dame?’ She’d say ‘hello!’, and off they

Many commented on Dame Ashby’s friendliness.

Her Times obituary said: “There were none of the 37 countries she visited where she had not made friends as well as admirers.” She was “a gracious person, whose warm heart was guided by a clear and courageous sanity of judgement into which no thought of self-esteem ever entered, while a gay humour sweetened and gave savour to the whole,” The Times continued. She had an “easy mastery of foreign tongues… At one congress she quelled a rising tumult by a speech in Italian; at another she pleased Kemal Ataturk by a speech in Turkish.” Her hobby was gardening, “pursued with unwearying energy in the rare intervals of a busy public life.”

Scallops & Asparagus Salad 3 large shelled scallops 180g asparagus 50g pine nuts

1 tbsp olive oil frilly leaved lettuce (frisée or lollo is nice) Salt and pepper

1 cooked lobster, halved and flesh cut in to bite size pieces (approx. 225g flesh), and keeping the outside shell.

Ask your fishmonger to prepare. ½ tbsp Dijon mustard 60g grated Gruyere cheese Salt and pepper to taste

1. To make the sauce, pour the milk into a non-stick pan and whisk in

½ tsp sugar, ½ tsp salt, ½ tbsp red wine vinegar and ½ tbsp lemon juice. Set aside.

Remove the coral half moons from the scallops and put to one side. Cut each scallop across the grain into three slices.

Trim and wash the asparagus and steam for 9 minutes.

In a frying pan, fry the pine nuts for 2 minutes until golden. Remove the pine nuts but keep the oil in the pan.

Tear pieces of the washed lettuce leaves and decorate an elegant plate. Place the cooled asparagus on the lettuce and sprinkle over the pine nuts.

Reheat the oil the pine nuts were cooked in until it is very hot and add the scallops. Cook for 1 minute on each side, then add the coral half moons, season with salt and pepper and cook for a further minute.

Place the scallops on the lettuce beside the asparagus and pour over the dressing. Eat while still warm!

the flour until fully blended. Add the butter and bring gently to the boil, whisking every minute or so. When it has fully thickened and just bubbling, turn the heat down and whisk until smooth and silky.

Add nutmeg, salt and cream and stir everything together.

Now add the Dijon mustard, putting in the cooked lobster meat until everything is combined.

Spoon into the lobster shells and sprinkle over Gruyere cheese.

Put under a preheated grill for 4- 5 minutes until the cheese has melted and the sauce is bubbling.

Serve with mashed potatoes or a nice saffron rice.

Chocolate & Orange Mousse Juice and grated rind of 1/2 orange 30g unsalted butter

60g bitter dark chocolate 2 large eggs, separated

1. Put the orange juice into a heavy pan, add broken pieces of chocolate and melt over a low heat, stirring continuously.

2. Add butter and grated orange rind, stirring until the butter has completely melted, then beat the mixture until it is thick.

3. Take the pan off the heat and stir in the egg

yolks, heating again briefly until the mixture is thick again. At this stage, be careful not to overheat (you don’t want scrambled eggs!).

4. Leave to cool. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold in to the cooled chocolate mixture.

5. Pour in to two dessert glasses and leave to set for at least 2 hours.

6. Add (ice) cream for extra wow, if needed.

Also labelled variously as smartbox insurance, ‘pay-how-you-drive’ insurance and usage-based insurance, it works through a small black box device, fitted to your car, which collects information about every aspect of your driving style. However ‘Big Brother’ this may seem to you, the insurance industry is on board and expects a huge adoption of telematics, already routinely employed by commercial vehicles, the emergency services and Formula 1 teams.

Private car insurance is seemingly re-invented by this technology. The traditional concept of insurance relied on risk aggregation, with underwriters’ averaging arts producing a premium. And aren’t we all only too aware of, frankly, horrendous rises in premiums in recent times?

Car insurance for young drivers has been particularly punitive for some years, especially for lads. However, as a result of the European Court of Justice’s gender parity ruling which came into effect on 21 December 2012, women will see the best price for their car insurance rise by at least 25% at renewal, with young female drivers hit hardest. A windfall benefit for insurers, certainly, as cynics will point out.

Telematics offers drivers and insurers a way to mitigate the worst of these price hikes, by having the premium based directly on their actual driving behaviour. This will empower responsible drivers with the facts to help them find a sensible insurance premium as a reasonable quid pro quo for prudent driving. Usefully, the black box also acts as a tracker device in the event of your vehicle being stolen!

A significant reduction in car insurance premiums are likely to be particularly welcome by young and high-risk category drivers. However, it is estimated that around half of all drivers will adopt telematics within 5 years, so watch this technology space very closely.

We expect the Best Man, Groom and Father-of-the-Bride to clamber unsteadily to their feet, but often these days the Bride herself will speak, and I’ve even had to listen to the Mother-of-the-Bride banging on.

For some, public speaking at a wedding can be a frightening chore, but for others it represents a platform opportunity not to be missed. If you are amongst the former category, here’s some advice. Speak slowly and try to talk to somebody in the audience. That way, you will sound as though you are having a conversation with your listeners and saying something you want them to hear.

Rehearse a lot from a fully written script and then turn it into short prompts you can use on the day.

Do not read out a monologue unless you really want the guests to start talking amongst themselves.

And try not to be too emotional.

First, drinks and starters, then Father-ofthe-Bride to welcome everybody and make them laugh. The main course can then be followed by the Best Man’s speech, after which comes pudding and, finally, the Groom.

Nanette Wood and Bren Furniss are musicians/music teachers from Sussex. They met at Music College in 1998 and married last August. The wedding ceremony was held at Brighton Unitarian Church, followed by a reception in a giant tipi tent at Nan’s family field and stables near Rusper, West Sussex.

Both Bren and Nan peformed at their wedding reception – he is a guitarist, she is a singer. They were also very fortunate to have John Coghlan’s Quo (the original drummer from Status Quo 19621981) perform in the late evening, incorporating the couple’s first dance (Unspoken Words by Status Quo) into their set.

Lisa Phillpot (co-owner of Martlet Photography) is a close friend of the couple and was thrilled to be asked to do their wedding photography, including these stunning shots after the event and, of course, the one on the magazine cover.

Nan says: “When Lisa asked me to do the ‘Rock the Frock’ photo shoot, I jumped at the chance to put my dress back on and inject a bit of rock into the pictures. It was a wonderful experience to pose in my wedding dress without the pressure of the day – what a superb idea!”

Balcombe Viaduct Walk Admire the beauty of one of Sussex’s most famous landmarks on this short walk north of Haywards Heath.

This walk starts from the unclassified road (Bordehill Lane) between Haywards Heath and Balcombe along the Ouse Valley Viaduct (GR324280), also known as the Balcombe Viaduct. It is an easy, moderately undulating walk along field paths, farm tracks and a section along a quiet country lane.

Some sections of the walk can be very muddy, especially after periods of wet weather, so be prepared!

From your car, follow the road uphill towards Balcombe.

The Ouse Valley Viaduct, which carries the Brighton to London mainline between Haywards Heath and Balcombe, strides majestically across the valley. It was built in 1841, is 96 feet high and consists of 37 semi- circular arches. It was designed by John Rastrick, the engineer of the line, in

association with David Mocatta, the architect responsible for many railway stations between London and Brighton (including Brighton Station). Described as probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain, it is over Âź mile long and carries approximately 110 trains each day. The 11 million bricks needed for its construction were conveyed by barge from Newhaven and Lewes along the Ouse Navigation.

To resume the walk at the top of the hill and opposite the drive leading to Stone Hall, look for a signed path and go over the stile and bear fractionally left across an open field to go over another stile. Cross a bridge over the railway and turn immediately right to walk parallel with the railway. At the bottom of the field, turn left and continue downhill, with woodland on your right, to the valley below. The path rises sharply uphill www.sussexliving.com

to join the B2036. Cross to the track opposite and follow this to Pilstye Farm, passing through farm buildings and out to Cherry Lane. Turn left along this quiet country lane and follow it for a little under a mile to once again join the B2036.

Cross the road to the drive opposite (signed to Great Bentley Farm). You are now on the Sussex Ouse Valley Way. Follow the farm track until just before the gateway leading to the main buildings and turn left through a small metal gate. Descend some steps to a meadow and follow the path with a stream on your left. Cross a footbridge over the

Ouse and bear half right to cross a field towards an oak tree to find a stile in the corner of the field.

Cross the next field diagonally right, going uphill to a pair of stiles in the corner. Go over these and head for the buildings of Ryelands Farm and a metal gate. Pass through the farmyard and dwelling and take the farm track which bears left away from the farm. In about 25 metres, go right over a stile and into a field. Follow the path across the field and walk beneath the viaduct, pausing once again to marvel at this monument to Victorian engineering.

Cross the field to a stile and Bordehill Lane.

You’ve got to constantly be working , because as soon as you sit back, people forget you.

“An actor friend of mine was playing the title role in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. He actually went into an abattoir and killed sheep to get into the right frame of mind. For me, that would be going too far. But there are lots of techniques to build up a character, like going through the scripts looking for subtexts and hidden messages. You’ve got to know the character inside out to give it truth. In a way, you have to become an empty vessel and just let the character flow through you.”

After years of appearing in school plays, Krys got her first professional role aged 14. “It was fantastic; I was picked up by car every day from school at lunchtime and taken to the theatre for rehearsals.” She always wanted to act full-time, but her career was repeatedly sidetracked.

First it was a scholarship to study in Communist Poland (her father was Polish, and she was raised surrounded

by Polish culture but not speaking the language). Then it was a job at Macmillan Publishers, and then motherhood.

But a few years ago, when her husband was at medical school, “I needed to bring in a bit of a second income. I was flicking through a paper one day and came across this advert: ‘Become a wellpaid TV/film extra’. I applied and paid some money upfront. Mistake, big mistake. It was a scam!”

After contacting someone more reputable, Krys did work as an extra for a while, but the often poor conditions and long hours didn’t fit well with having two young children, so she took a drama degree and decided to only take proper acting parts. “It’s not www.sussexliving.com

good for an actor to get well known as a background artist because directors are then very hesitant to cast you in major roles.”

Her most recent role was in a play called Girls’ Night at The Hawth in Crawley last November – a fundraiser for St Catherine’s Hospice. She’s also been Hedda in Hedda Gabler, and Lady Macbeth.

Recently, Krys worked on Skyfall, but her scene was cut. “It wouldn’t have added anything. That’s the thing about film – it’s all about what makes the film work. You could spend days and weeks on something and it could end up on the cutting room floor. You can’t be precious about your work.”

Krys is perhaps best known for her TV work.

She’s popped up on our screens on programmes as varied as Top Gear, Miranda and A Touch of Frost.

When she is not acting, Krys is a regular presenter on East Grinstead’s Meridian FM. You can hear her on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday mornings, as well as some Thursday evenings. She first appeared on Meridian as an interviewee in 2007, and quickly got talked into presenting and doing various other jobs behind the scenes. She recently raised £1,000 for the station with a non-stop 114-mile sponsored bike ride, one of her many endeavours for local good causes.

Krys has helped raise money for East Grinstead’s St Peter’s RC Primary School, St Catherine’s Hospice, and the Peanut Ward of Queen Victoria Hospital. When Krys’ daughter was badly burned by a faulty firework, she was treated there. “To say thank you to the Peanut Ward, I did a marathon in 2005,” Krys says. She used to run marathons, but hadn’t for several years: “I did loads of training, did it in 3.49.43, and raised £4,000 for them. “Then, I did a sky dive from 12,000 feet for the Children’s Fire and Burn Trust, and raised £2,000.”

“I’d go crazy without acting,” says Krys, but admits it can be tough. “You’ve got to constantly be working, because as soon as you sit back, people forget you. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it. There are far easier ways to make money.”

We have seen his work in many places, his signature was a small web in the bottom corner of his work. He died just before we came to East Grinstead in 1954 but we got to know his wife and daughter and two sons who were Benedictine monks and visited their lovely old house in the High Street.
