Be honest, how many mince pies have you eaten so far? The more the merrier I say, because it’s Christmas! I hope you enjoy our festive December issue – we have lots to entertain, inspire and interest you this month.

Lisa de Silva spent a fascinating afternoon with the charming Herbie Flowers, our very own local (a Ditchling resident through and through) music legend. Read the story from page 43 to fi nd out how it all started, the greats he has worked with in the past and his ongoing love and enthusiasm for music today. This man is unstoppable!

Another local hero, hailing from the village of Balcombe, is the last known survivor of the Zulu war, Lt Colonel Frank Bourne. Roger Linn tells the tale of this young, courageous and dedicated soldier from page 6.

A Local HERO As the last survivor of the Zulu war, Lt Colonel Frank Bourne, OBE, DCM earned his stripes as a young, courageous and dedicated soldier.

Roger Linn pays him fitting tribute

Frank Bourne was born in Balcombe in 1854. Eighteen years and eight months later, having grown into an undersized and weedy teenager, he made his way to Reigate and took the queen’s shilling.

He enlisted in the 24th Regiment of Foot and began to receive the magnificent sum of 6p a day, from which the government deducted 3.5p for ‘messing’. Laughing, he said, in a radio interview he gave in 1936 at the age of eighty two, that he used the rest of the cash for “luxuries”.

He wasn’t the only person with a sense of humour however, because on joining his regiment he was posted to ‘A’ company. This was traditionally called, the ‘Grenadier’ company and in those days it was composed of the very biggest men in the battalion. The regiment had just returned from fi fteen years of service in India, so

Lt Colonel Frank Bourne young Frank found himself surrounded by some very tough, experienced soldiers. However given his stature and ‘greenness’ he must have been outstanding at his chosen profession, because when the regiment was ordered to move to South Africa five years later, Frank had just been promoted to Colour Sergeant of ‘B’ company, making him, at only 23, the youngest Colour Sergeant in the British Army. And that was the position he held when in South Africa a couple of years later, the regiment, now called the South Wales Borderers, formed part of the force led by Lord Chelmsford which continued on page 8

began the Zulu Wars by crossing the Buffalo River into Zululand.

They crossed at a place called Rorke’s Drift.

Rorke’s Drift would become one of the most iconic battles in British military history and everybody who has seen the film Zulu knows what happened there. If you haven’t seen Zulu don’t worry because it appears on TV every Christmas. The reality of the defence of Rorke’s Drift however, was somewhat different from the film version. One of the film’s ‘heroes’ alongside Michael Caine and Stanley Baker is the Sgt Major played by Nigel Green – he is portrayed as a man in his 40s, tall in stature with a lifetime’s experience of soldiering behind him.

the men together and steadies them throughout the fight. In reality of course, he was our Frank, and although his conduct was as courageous as that depicted in the film, he was only 26 years old, 5ft 6ins tall and Rorke’s Drift was probably his first serious battle.

Frank recorded his ‘bitter disappointment’ when his company of around a hundred fit men was chosen to stay behind and guard the hospital, stores and pontoons at Rorke’s Drift, however like it or not, he and his sergeants were forced to watch glumly as Chelmsford’s column of four thousand men proudly marched off to engage the enemy.

Little did they know. Ten days later, half of the column who were camped ten miles away at a place called Isandhlwana were overwhelmed by around four thousand Zulus. Some twelve hundred British soldiers were killed in the disaster and the victorious Zulus, flushed with success, immediately set off to deal with the tiny outpost at Rorke’s Drift.

Frank said that they knew nothing of the calamity taking place ten miles away, but about half past two in the afternoon, stragglers began to arrive with the bad news and it became apparent that their situation had become perilous in the extreme.

He went on to serve in Burma and India and was commissioned in 1890. At the end of the 1914-18 war, for which he had rejoined the army, he was given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed OBE. Frank died appropriately enough on ‘Victory in Europe’ day at the end of the second World War. He was the last survivor of the fight at Rorke’s Drift and is buried in Beckenham, Kent.

With 36 men in the hospital, there was no thought of withdrawal and Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne started his men on turning the little settlement into a position they could defend. They ‘loopholed’ the walls of the hospital and made barricades out of meal bags and wagons, while he took a line of skirmishers forward to try and delay the enemy’s advance. They would have two hours to make such preparations as they could.

Around half past four in the afternoon the fi rst 500 Zulus attacked and Frank’s line of disciplined infantrymen performed what the military call ‘fi re and retire’ as they fell back on the outpost.

As Frank recorded later, “We knew then that whatever happened, we had to fight it out alone.” And fight it out they did against wave after wave of attackers. The hospital was set on fi re about seven thirty in the evening, but all the sick and wounded were rescued and the desperate defence of the ever decreasing circle went on throughout the night.

The Zulus, who numbered in the thousands at the start of the fight, fi nally gave up and withdrew some twelve hours after the fi rst shots were fi red, leaving the men of B company more than a little surprised that they had survived the night.

Here’s what Frank said many years later, “I was moving among the men all the time, and not one of them fl inched. Their courage and bravery cannot be expressed in words.”

Hoathly, Sharpthorne and the surrounding area, the choir has contributed many thousands of pounds to St. Catherine’s Hospice and other local charities. Unlike most choirs the members only sing together at Christmas resulting in a joyful reunion when rehearsals start in early November.

During the early years the choir was transported to the outlying houses in the parish, on the back of a builder’s lorry with a piano strapped to it. Fortunately transportation today is less bumpy! But ninety years later the Carol Party still receives a warm welcome from their wonderful hosts throughout the villages, who enable the festive spirit of the Carol Party to continue to benefit local charities.

The Carol Party’s next appearance will be in the beautiful parish church at Highbrook Christmas Market on Saturday 5th December 2015.

Ditchling Film Society Our Christmas film on Thursday 3rd December will be The Hundred-Foot Journey. Hassam Kadam (played by Manish Dayal) is an extraordinarily talented and largely self-taught culinary novice. When he and his family are displaced from their native India and settle in a quaint French village, they decide to open an Indian restaurant. However, Madame Mallory (played by Helen Mirren), the proprietress of a Michelin starred restaurant just a hundred feet away, strongly objects. The Hundred-Foot Journey is a harmonious comedy abounding with flavours that burst across the tongue and a portrayal of two worlds colliding.

According to tradition, before our Christmas film we shall be serving our famous mulled wine and mince pies to get the festive season off to a rip-roaring start.

The film will be shown in Ditchling Village Hall starting at 8.00pm (doors 7.30pm). There is ample free parking behind the hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for the sum of £5.00 payable at the door.

The Gateway Club Mid Sussex Gateway Club is a social club run on a Wednesday evening in Burgess Hill, term time only, for adults with learning disabilities. Our

members enjoy themselves in a relaxed atmosphere taking part in an activity from our busy programme or just enjoying a chat and a cup of tea with friends. We enjoy many activities which include art, pottery, painting, karaoke, games, bingo, discos and so much more.

Neighbourly Care provides free assistance to any vulnerable adult in the Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint area. This assistance comes in many forms, from just visiting for a cup of tea and checking the client’s comfort, safety and needs to assisted shopping and running errands.

There are no paid staff and the charity is run totally by volunteers. It is currently the holder of the FabVorg award for volunteer organisations in Mid Sussex and two of the staff were recently honoured with Community Service Awards

Henfield Living Advent This event takes place in Henfield from the 1st to the 24th December.

Like a children’s advent calendar, a different window or door is opened each day for a short ‘performance’ or exhibition, for an assembled audience. This can include songs, carols, music, book recordings, local folklore, sketches, dance and drama, all with a wintery or Christmas theme.

Opening with the turning on of the Christmas Lights, this year’s events will include regular Henfield favourites such as the

annual ‘Christmas Starts Here’ concert, the Henfield Christmas Shopping Evening with festive shops, stalls and entertainment; a demonstration by the Spinners & Weavers Group; and the ‘Sheep Trail’ around the village. For the first time Henfield Library will be launching an eleven day children’s ‘character hunt’ around the library from the start of Living Advent, concluding with a prize draw on the evening of 11th December.

Recently, my seven year old granddaughter was shown a video of her father working at a large commercial exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

She thought it was very interesting, “but why”, she asked him, “are there so many shepherds?”

At this time of year and for a veteran of so many nativity plays, as both a participant and a spectator, it was not an unreasonable question for the child to ask.

Especially since Mid Sussex is chock full of very small shepherds every December.

Last year I enjoyed the truly remarkable sight of about thirty of them, complete with fake beards, holding hands outside my house as they waited to cross the road into church.

There are two main reasons for the phenomenon of the annual outbreak of tiny shepherds: one is that every child performing in the school’s nativity production must have a role. And whilst the opportunities to dress up as Mary or Joseph are necessarily limited, and there really can’t be more than

three wise men, there are no numerical restrictions on shepherds, angels or sheep. Indeed, over the years I’ve been related to all three. However, angels are tricky to dress, simply because their costumes require wings and halos, neither of which are likely to survive all the way through the performance, and sheep – whilst essential to the spirit of the thing – are really just sheep. They don’t even have any lines.

Hence the popularity of shepherds, with their natty tea-towel headdress and sheet ensembles, and the possibility of exchanging some snappy lines of dialogue with the angels.

The Christmas tree of course! Do you have special traditional family decorations or do you fancy something a bit different this year? Read on and be inspired Christmas is an important religious festival at this time of year, but is celebrated by many people regardless of their religion. The turn of the year is an important time for all cultures. For everybody there is one key element (Christmas dinner, the Queen’s Speech, presents, cards, family, a special decoration, a favourite carol) without which it would not be ‘Christmas’.

Our British Christmas ‘traditions’ have constantly been changing over time. Initially the Pagans and the Romans decorated outdoor evergreen trees which then formed the focus for a community celebration.

Decorating outside trees is a modern revival made possible by modern technology allowing us to put lights outside safely. Our community celebrations are wonderfully successful around 5th November when we come together to watch firework displays, and many people now set off fireworks at Christmas and New Year. All these

lights serve the purpose to lighten the darkness in the darkest part of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere.

The fashion of decorating inside might link to the Dark Ages when everyday folk changed the rushes on their floors around the Winter Solstice, fi lling their homes with sweet scent. Around the turn of the sixteenth century it was fashionable for evergreens to decorate the feasting hall. Maybe the red berries on the holly and white berries on the mistletoe were made more significant by England’s new national emblem, the Tudor Rose.

The idea of a decorated tree inside is a German tradition brought to Britain by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. Your tree may be real or artificial or even minimalist but, if you have any thought of celebrating Christmas, the chances are you will have a decorated tree either inside, outside or both.

Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to festive decoration.

A special Santa Claus looks after presents under our tree at home; my dad made it from the festive advertising of a chocolate manufacturer approximately 80 years ago. Then there are the wooden tree decorations bought on a trip to the Arctic Circle to see the real Santa Claus when my boys were small.

Each year when our decorations are unwrapped I am surrounded by special memories.

Whether you decide to buy your decorations or make them, remember that you are following a line of tradition stretching back in time. The timing of Christmas coincides with the Winter Solstice and the turning of the year; it links us inextricably to our ancestors who built Stonehenge.

Green reminds us that spring will come again and red is a reminder that Christ will die a grisly death on the cross, and Santa Claus wears red because St. Nicholas was a bishop. Christmas tree designers often choose a theme for their trees; tartan, quirky colour combinations or the ‘traditional’ look.

The holly takes the

crown Traditionally decking the house in festive cheer this time of year, holly really does take the crown for the most Christmassy plant around… just remember it’s gender!

With its familiar, frosty Christmas card image, we assume holly, (botanical name: ‘Ilex’) grows exclusively in cool climates. Not so. From snowy Sussex woodlands to the sundrenched tropics, hollies are a huge and diverse family of plants that can be found throughout the world.

Left to their own devices, European forms of holly make substantial trees, but they’re relatively slow-growing and respond well to pruning, so can easily be kept under control. They tolerate most soils, will grow in sun or semi-shade and are hardy down to about -15°c. Providing the ground isn’t frosted, you can plant them now. Their nectar-rich flowers, (April/May) are an excellent food source for bees, whose foraging will pollinate the flowers for you. To ensure a good display of berries, male and female forms should be planted in close proximity. Only female plants produce berries, although a couple of varieties are ‘self-fertile’, requiring no pollinator. J. C. van Tol is an excellent self-fertile type, with pillarbox-red berries and rounded, non-spiky foliage. The female form, Golden van Tol carries few berries, but has stunning leaves with golden yellow margins that flower arrangers love.

There is no pricklier plant than ‘Hedgehog’ holly, (Ilex ferox). First mentioned in botanical journals in the early 1600s, this sterile form does not produce

berries at all. It’s likely that it was a naturally occurring variation in the wild and was propagated by man to make a useful animal-proof barrier. Its small and lethally sharp leaves make it an excellent hedging plant in areas where security is an issue.

In the polite drawing rooms of England, the scandalous private life of the holly is never mentioned. Like its crazy Californian namesake, the botanical world of Holly Wood is built on a tangled mess of deceit and lies that only a divorce lawyer could love. For instance, the variety Golden King is, in fact, female, whereas Silver Queen is male.

To ensure a good display of berries, male and female forms should be planted in close proximity The leaves of Golden King are wide and variegated with few spines. The berries are a soft reddish-brown, (don’t forget, Golden King is a girly). Like most hollies, her new summer growth is tinted an attractive pink shade. Because she is really a he, (are you keeping up?) Silver Queen has no berries, but produces sculptural leaves with elegant wavy edges. The leaf centres are the darkest green imaginable, boldly set off against margins of cream or white.

‘The Queen of the Adriatic’ has nothing whatsoever to do with holly. This was, in fact, the nickname given to my Uncle Billy – a ‘colourful’ character, but hardly a suitable topic for a horticultural column. Never mind - pull up a chair, throw another log on the yuletide fi re and I’ll tell you all about him …

Tori and Lily are back with some more Christmas crafts for you to try at home. This month they have turned candy canes into mice, and crafted a beautiful hanging star

Christmas

This hanging star makes a great decoration and can be hung just about anywhere – in the window, on the door or even from the ceiling!

Hanging Star You will need One fresh long stick with supple bark or skin or five smaller sticks of the same length Dried grape vine, twine or string Holly, berries and pine tree cuttings Gold spray paint A few small nails String for hanging 1) Start by slowly breaking the long stick into five equal lengths and bending into a star shape, or nail five smaller sticks

together in a star shape.

2) Bind well with the vine, twine or string to secure the star.

3) Arrange the holly, berries and pine tree cuttings in the centre and secure using more vine, twine or string.

4) Spray lightly with the gold spray and tie a string at the top for hanging up.

Lily loved going for a walk to collect the bits for this star before we started, but you can easily find the components in craft shops.

Lily particularly loved making these candy cane mice as they are quick, fun and not too messy. They look very sweet hanging on the tree or all lined up in a row, if you can resist eating them that is!

1) Cut out a tear shape for each candy cane, just over half the size of the candy stick. Repeat this for all the colours. This is the body.

2) Cut two small slits parallel to each other running widthways at the big end of the tear. Thread the candy cane through these to make the tail.

You may need a little glue to hold the felt in place.

3) For the ears, cut the felt into a number 8 shape and thread through two more small slits, this time running lengthways about 1½ inches from the head end of the mouse. Then cut out some oval shapes and glue them on top of the ears.

4) Glue on gems for the eyes and a little button for the nose.

Streat Church

PILGRIMAGE Kipling’s great love song to his adopted county briefly captures the special character of the ancient churches along the foot of the South Downs – mostly small and simple, and at once homely and holy. Five of them lie close together under the short stretch of downland that runs from the Jack and Jill windmills to Ditchling Beacon, and all are eminently worth a visit.

The church of St. John the Baptist at Clayton dates from late AngloSaxon times, and still has the tall narrow shape of that early period. It can be reached on foot by a mile-long track that runs southwards from Hassocks station, immediately east of the railway line, or by a path steeply descending northwards from the Jack and Jill windmills car park.

The church has just a nave for the congregation and a chancel (area around the altar) with no side aisles or transepts. The two sections of the church are divided by a wall pierced by a large and graceful

chancel arch dating from about 1050. The church’s great treasure is its twelfth century wall paintings, which are of national, if not international, importance. Having been painted over by protestant reformers in the sixteenth century, they were discovered and restored in late Victorian times. They seem initially a little pale and indistinct, but when the eyesight adjusts it becomes possible to make out a lot of detail.

Above the chancel arch is the imposing figure of Christ in glory. Proceeding towards him along the north wall is a great line of figures, met

by St Peter holding his keys. There is a similar procession on the south wall, though Satan on a fearsome beast is attempting to pull some of them the other way! On the west wall is a beautiful modern engraved glass window to mark the millennium, showing the church beneath the Downs.

Westmeston Church

is the village and church of Westmeston. It can be reached by walking along Underhill Lane, though this has occasional traffic so should be followed with care. An alternative is to climb up to Jack and Jill, follow the South Downs Way past Ditchling Beacon, take the next track to the left and descend from there.

The church is peaceful and engagingly picturesque, with a nave of Norman origin and a chancel in the simple thirteenth century style. It also has a slightly later low south aisle, and an original Norman font. The north wall of the nave contains a stained glass window commemorating Second Lieutenant Frederick Athelstan Fanshawe Baines, killed near Ypres in 1915, aged just 19. The glass shows old houses at Winchester around the College, snow covered, with continued on page 32

trees on St Catherine’s Hill behind, silhouetted against a red sky. Beyond and above, a young mounted warrior with a shining face rises through the starry heavens towards angels bearing a chalice.

A bridle path on the southern side of the main road, going east, runs for about 300 yards from where it is possible to cross the road carefully (to the gateway of ‘Old Middleton’) and take a path for about a mile northeast to Streat Church. This serves an even smaller hamlet and feels remote and time-lost.

Its dedication is not known (not St. Reat!) but like Westmeston its nave is originally Norman, and its chancel from the thirteenth century. It has two iron memorial slabs (look for one with a figure 3 the wrong way round) reminding us of the Sussex iron industry fired by charcoal, before the age of coal. Ditchling Church

Westmeston Church is peaceful and engagingly picturesque, with a nave of Norman origin and a chancel in the simple thirteenth century style

backdrop, is in the nave’s north wall.

A major east-west track lies immediately south of the churchyard from where there is a stunning view of the South Downs, including the V-shaped hillside wood planted to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1887. Proceeding eastwards along this track a mile and a quarter takes the rambler to East Chiltington Church, again with its dedication unknown.

It is a very simple structure of Norman nave and fourteenth century chancel, surrounded by glorious countryside. There is a blocked up round-headed

Norman doorway in the north wall of the nave and one of the cross beams in the roof has the carved date 1669. Of great interest are the wooden boards under the tower recording bequests to the poor – one from 1797 is of £4 6s 8d (£4.33) per year “ for ever”, one of the administrators being ‘John Hamshar’ – surely ‘Hampshire’ pronounced with a Sussex accent!

A short stroll westward from the church back along the same track, to the south-east corner of Plumpton racecourse, and then north up the lane, gives access to Plumpton railway station. Alternatively, the visitor can continue back to Streat from where the same track goes on westward for a mile and a half to Ditchling.

The church of St. Margaret is grander than its neighbours, as befits a large village, but like them it has a pyramidical ‘Sussex cap’ atop its tower, which is so redolent of Downland churches. It is spacious and airy with large pointed arches which are more ornate in the

chancel (dating from 1263).

The origin of Ditchling’s name is Dicul-inghas, meaning Dicul’s settlement, as with many other Sussex places such as Steyning (Stanna-inghas) or Fulking (Folka-inghas). But all the other names end in –a which seems to be the early AngloSaxon norm. I wonder whether Dicul was the Irish monk Dicuil recorded by the eighth century historian Bede as the fi rst to bring Christianity to Sussex, with a mission at Bosham. Bede tells us that he had no success and was then supplanted by St Wilfrid, whom we know had little time for Celtic Christianity.

Was he possibly displaced eastwards to make Ditchling the fount of Christianity in East Sussex? It would be nice to think he had more success in this lovely setting, but we may never know!

Even though legendary bass player, Herbie Flowers, has worked all over the world recording with superstars like David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, Paul McCartney and Elton John, he cannot ever imagine living anywhere other than his ‘dear sweet Ditchling.’ Lisa de Silva meets the man himself

A

s one of the most famous bassist session musicians in the UK, at 77 years old Herbie still does the odd recording session, but playing live jazz remains his greatest love. In fact, our interview comes the morning after a gig in Chatham, “When I’m playing music and it’s a good gig, I always think

I can’t believe my luck,” he laughs. “There’s something about music that stops you thinking about everything else. It’s a wonderful thing.”

His band, Music Box, are welcome regulars on the Sussex music scene, playing such diverse venues and events as local music, jazz and arts festivals including Hurst Festival, The Hawth, clubs continued on page 44

and bars in Hastings and Lewes, many venues in Brighton and Ditchling Museum. Always busy working, Herbie is also part of a jazz trio called, Two Grandfathers and a Russian, who regularly gig in Finland.

To discover where his lifelong love of music fi rst emerged, we need to go back to post-war Britain and Herbie’s Aunty Jean, who spent the best part of 80 years as a pub pianist in south west London. “When I was a young lad, from about 1945 onwards, she’d take me on the bus to Richmond to Bensteads, the music shop, where she’d spend about half an hour thumbing through all the new sheet music, secretly learning it all by heart. I loved the shop as it was full of interesting things like ukuleles and mouth organs and I was fascinated by Aunty Jean and how she memorised all these songs off by heart.” It must run in the family, because just like Aunty Jean, throughout his career Herbie has also committed 1000s of songs to memory.

From an early age, Herbie was also allowed to sit in on his brother’s piano lessons and with his natural flair for music, started to pick up some piano playing skills. At school, when his music teacher, Mrs Barlow told him he had perfect pitch and to take up music, it was all the nod he needed and he joined the Tiffi n Boys School Band on the tuba.

Little did he know that his enduring career as a musician had just begun.

It was during this time that Herbie started his love affair with Sussex. “My Uncle Ben and Aunty Kath owned Leawards Farm in Chailey and we’d go down there a lot, especially during the war to get

out of London. I fi nally moved down about 30 years ago when I realised I didn’t want to be in London anymore and now I can’t imagine living anywhere other than my dear sweet Ditchling. I love the fact that Ditchling, along with many other Sussex villages is a bit quirky and I thank Brighton for our multicultural broadminded outlook.”

When Herbie fi rst moved to Ditchling the village boasted 28 shops, now down to around five, but thankfully the local Post Office is staying open after a recent closure scare. “It’s the heart of the community,” explains Herbie.

His Sussex location also offers Herbie the convenience of easy transport connections wherever his gigs take him. Interestingly, despite his successful career as a musician, growing up Herbie dreamed of becoming a test pilot and joined the Air Training Corps, where he won a competition for a gliding scholarship. As a result, he earned a glider pilot’s licence. “As a musician I travel all over the place, but for me gliding is the real flying. I loved it although I’ve not been up in a glider for the last 25 years.”

Unable to fi nd a civilian job he enjoyed, when it came to National Service, Herbie asked for an early call up and was conscripted into the RAF. Perhaps disappointingly for him he failed the pilot selection process, but this loss was the music world’s gain, as he became a bandsman when his tuba playing talent got him into the RAF Central Band. He spent the following years touring the Far East, which was where he not only discovered his fi rst love of jazz, continued on page 46

but also ended up marrying the colonel’s daughter.

“Wherever we went the US military used to send all these fantastic bands who played jazz music. It was where I discovered how much I loved jazz.”

During this time he also bought a double bass off of his band master and to this day the bass remains his instrument of choice.

Throughout his career Herbie has played in a number of bands including Blue Mink, which he helped to form in 1969 and whose debut single, Melting Pot, reached number three in the UK charts. During the 1970s, he joined Marc Bolan’s glam rock band, T Rex and in the 1980s formed Sky, with classical guitarist, John Williams.

However, it is as one of the UK’s most accomplished session musicians that Herbie has made a living, working alongside some of the world’s most iconic rock stars.

He has played on albums by David Bowie, Elton John, David Essex, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and played bass on Jeff Wayne’s, War of the Worlds. Most famously, it is his hand behind the prominent bass line on Lou Reed’s, Walk on the Wild Side and by the end of the 1970s, Herbie had played bass on over 500 hit recordings.

His most treasured possession, aside from his two children and granddaughter, is his Ivor Novello Award which he won in 1970 for composing the Clive Dunn hit, Grandad. “It’s a soppy song really,” laughs Herbie. “But it was the first real Christmas

number one, before the Christmas number one had become a thing. I’m really proud to be the first musician to win an Ivor Novello for songwriting. It was the first song I ever wrote and I can genuinely say in that sense, I’m a one hit wonder!”

Back in 1959 Herbie bought a Fender jazz bass guitar while in New York, but never felt comfortable playing electronic music. “To be honest, I’m not a fan of electronic music, much of it sounds like it’s been generated by a computer. As a musician, there’s something organic and real about playing all kinds of different music. I was never someone who thought I’d just buy an electronic instrument, join a band and have a hit. That was never my ambition, I wanted to be a musician and that’s what I am.”

Herbie’s passion for music is matched by his desire to help young musicians forge a musical career. “I take it to heart that young musicians these days do not get the support they deserve,” explains Herbie. “So many big companies take so much money out of the music business, but pay barely any tax to help sustain the cultural life of the country.” He laments the closure of so many of our music schools.

For five years during the 1990s, Herbie taught bass at a local college and during the latter half of his career, spent many years running Rock Shops, attended by school children from all over Sussex.

These week long workshops brought together both accomplished and young musicians and were based on learning about composition, improvisation and putting together a band to create original music. “It was a great learning opportunity and meant that over the years, so many hundreds of young musicians all met and connected and lots of them went on to forge a career in the music business.” One ambition on Herbie’s bucket list would be to set up and establish a new music school, such as the Sussex Cello Academy.

One musical group he has already set up is a 150 strong choir in Shoreham. “It really started up by accident,” he says. “We’d been doing a jazz recital in Shoreham about four years ago, when I said how many of you would join a choir if we put continued on page 48

one together and about half the audience put their hands up. So, I decided to go ahead and do it and it’s wonderful. I can’t make all the rehearsals but I still do a few of the gigs with them. People love music and I’m lucky that I can reach out and start these things off,” he smiles.

At 77 years old, Herbie shows no signs of slowing down and his diary is full right up until the Ditchling Fair next June. “You’ve got to keep yourself going,” he tells me. “If we shut ourselves away we’d miss all the action. Music keeps me going but I have to play everyday. To be honest, I’m happiest when I’m on stage at a gig and it’s all going well, but I don’t want to sit in a comfort

zone and I’m always trying to push the barriers to play better. I have to practise thirty minutes a day, although I seem to spend twenty-five minutes of that just looking at the double bass and five minutes going over to it and playing one long note!”

Herbie claims to have millions of favourite songs, but the day of our interview, it’s Bert Bacharach’s A House Is Not A Home, the version sung by Dusty Springfield, who Herbie has worked with in the past. “I’m a bit of a softie for nice pretty things, which is probably why I love music,” he confesses. “Being a musician, I love lyrics and great songs and thankfully, there’s so many of them.”

Having played at a few receptions in Ditchling Museum, Herbie is hoping to establish a regular music event there for small orchestras, jazz or folk musicians to play and loves nothing more than hearing from people who have been inspired to start playing, or resume playing an instrument after seeing him perform.

“When I’m playing music, it stops me wondering what happened to the last seventy-seven years.

Penny Hoyle and husband Craig, who have recently opened the aptly named The Penny Black Barber Shop, decided to combine the best qualities of a proper, old fashioned barber shop with additions that would appeal to all ages and tastes.

One of the most striking features of the barber’s interior is a fully functioning miniature car that doubles as a seat for boys and girls up to the age of five. Parents are as fascinated with the car as their offspring; with steering, a radio, a horn and flashing lights, the motor persuades even the most reticent child that a visit to the hairdresser can be great fun. A ‘fi lling station’ offers kids free lollies and a fish tank, complete with angel fish, is mounted above the mirror to keep them completely entertained. Older kids and parents have a wonderful retro arcade games table to keep them amused offering 60 games. The table has proved a hit with nostalgic fathers keen to reignite their teenage gaming skills!

Penny, who has always lived in the village, grew up in the pub at the top of the High Street and knows everyone by name, which adds to the incredibly welcoming atmosphere in the shop. Her assistant, Neil, has worked with her for over five years and the pair have created a friendly, homely feel for their customers. Although it’s a walk-in barbers, Craig, who trained at the London School of Barbering, offers wet shaves by appointment only. The luxurious wet shave is an unhurried 30 minute session with hot towels and a straight, cut throat razor.

Word is already spreading and a glance through the glowing testimonials on the Penny Black Barber Shop Facebook page show how appreciative locals are flocking to the shop, which is becoming a social hub for the village. One client wrote, “I cannot recommend these guys enough… you will have our custom forever” while others commented on the “great service” and the “lovely

shop with the great atmosphere”.

Penny, Craig and Neil have paid close attention to detail and styling; from the beautiful 20s style chairs and telephone to the motor car chair and the retro games arcade table, the shop has impeccable cool combined with that rare quality, genuine warmth. Penny extends her welcome to everyone and is particularly proud to serve the needs of the local Hollyrood Residential Care Establishment, who now enjoy regular appointments at the shop.

Let’s Eat...

All the trimmings!

Christmas dinner in our house is massive! Everyone gets stuck in and helps – even the children peel some veg – all made extra festive with a drop of Prosecco or sherry, of course. We always get a turkey crown and ham prepared by our local butcher and accompany them with pigs in blankets, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and this array of tasty, flavoursome side dishes (serves 8). Crackers and silly hats mandatory.

Crispy, fluffy garlic and rosemary roasties

1 large bag of white roasting potatoes 3 tbsp plain flour 5 cloves of garlic 3 sprigs of rosemary Olive oil Salt

COOK TIME 1HR 45mins

Preheat oven to 200C, Gas Mark 6. Put a large pan of water on a high heat to boil. Peel and quarter potatoes, parboil until slightly soft, this should take roughly 10 to 15 mins. Pour a generous glug of olive oil into a large baking tray along with the rosemary and crushed garlic cloves (leave skins on so they don’t burn and taste bitter) and place into the oven to heat. Drain potatoes in a colander and leave for a few minutes. Sprinkle over a generous amount of salt and the flour, place a plate over the top of the colander and give it a good old shake! Carefully pour the potatoes into the hot oil and spoon over the top.

Place back in the oven for 1 hour, turning occasionally, and then turn oven down to 160C, Gas Mark 3 until crispy and golden.

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese 2 cauliflower heads 2 broccoli heads 200g cheddar cheese, grated 100g Parmesan cheese, grated 2 to 3 tsp wholegrain mustard 100g salted butter 2 pints of milk 3 tbsp plain flour Pepper

COOK TIME 1HR

In a thick bottomed pan make a roux with butter and flour on a low heat. When you have a thick paste add the milk a little at a time and stir constantly, until thick and there are no lumps. Add the mustard and most of the grated cheeses, leaving a little for the top. Parboil broccoli and cauliflower until part cooked and leave to drain and cool. Leaving it to cool helps to keep a thick cheese sauce and stops it going watery. Place the broccoli and cauliflower into a large dish, pour on the cheese sauce and sprinkle the remainder of the cheese over the top and bake in the oven for 20 mins on high or under the grill until browned. continued on page 52

600g petit pois 1 small onion, finely diced ½ romaine lettuce heart, roughly chopped Olive oil Large knob of butter Pepper Heat a large pan on medium heat, add a glug of olive oil then fry the chopped onions until transparent and cooked. Tip in the petit pois, lettuce, butter and pepper and stir. Turn the heat down low and leave to cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes with the lid on or until tender.

Preheat oven to 180C, Gas Mrk 4. Put the olive oil in a large baking tray and place in the oven to heat up. Peel, half and chop all the vegetables lengthways into similar sizes. Place the vegetables in the hot oil, sprinkle with a little salt and pepper, add the thyme and stir to coat. Drizzle honey all over and place back in the oven for 1 hour, checking and turning now and then.

Sprouts and pancetta

600g Brussels sprouts, peeled and ends cut off 150g pancetta, cut into lardons Olive oil Knob of butter Salt and pepper Boil a medium sized pan of water and simmer sprouts for 20 minutes or until almost cooked through. Take sprouts out to drain and cool. In a frying pan, fry the pancetta on a medium heat until slightly crispy. Half the sprouts and fry them in with the pancetta, with a knob of butter, salt and pepper until slightly brown.

In ONE SLICE OR TWO? National Fruit Cake Month falls this Christmas season – light or dark, rich or sweet, iced or naked, festive feasting just wouldn’t be the same without it I’m never quite sure whether December has been christened National Fruit Cake Month because the cake is a traditional Christmas confection, or because in December there always seem to be more loonies on the bus than usual. However, assuming it’s the former, October might be a better choice if only because, in my house at least, that’s when the Christmas fruit cake is started by creating the glorious mixture of exotic ingredients which make up our traditional cake.

I say ‘our’ because no two fruit cakes are the same and most of their recipes are closely guarded secrets which have been passed down through generations.

In fact I know one so hushhush that it contains over 20 ingredients including, muscovado sugar, dried fruits, honey, eggs, almonds, orange zest, chocolate and

much, much more. Our own is a much more modest affair sometimes referred to as ‘Bung In The Oven’ cake.

When the mixture has been prepared, the children who are now hanging around the kitchen in mysteriously large numbers, are allowed one fi ngerful of the mixture before it is placed in the oven. If baked with love, the fi nished article is a perfectly cooked, aromatic and risen fruit cake awaiting only marzipan, icing and decorations.

And yet it still lacks one vital ingredient. For the next two months while the cake matures it will be pierced every couple of weeks with a kitchen skewer and liberally doused with brandy.

Rum can be used as an interesting alternative, but remember only modest quantities should be employed, or your guests will start to talk funny after a couple of slices.

A certain fruit shaped, orange flavoured chocolate treat is a staple in many Christmas stockings, and the inspiration for this shortbread based tray bake.

The crumbly, buttery shortbread is perfectly accompanied by the chocolate and orange striped sponge and glossy chocolate top.

We enjoy this as a festive teatime treat, but I have also used it to replace the classic Christmas pudding as a lighter option after our traditional turkey lunch.

Delicious served with a big dollop of chocolate ice cream.

Christmas chocolate orange tray bake Shortbread

175g gluten free plain flour 50g cornflour 1 ½ tsp xanthan gum 175g butter Zest of 1 medium orange 75g golden caster sugar 1. Preheat oven to 180C, Gas Mark 4.

Grease and line a 12 x 7 inch Swiss roll tin with baking paper.

2. In a large bowl, place the flours and xanthan gum. Rub in the butter, then add the orange zest and caster sugar and combine all the ingredients together into a soft dough.

3. Pat the shortbread dough into the prepared tin, making sure all the base is covered. If the mixture is too soft, place a piece of cling film over the shortbread mix and press it into place.

Remove the cling film (if used) and place the tin into a preheated oven.

4. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin.

Sponge

225g soft butter 225g golden caster sugar 225g gluten free self-raising flour 4 medium eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 desert spoons sifted cocoa powder Zest of 1 medium orange You will also need 2 piping bags 1. In a large bowl beat the butter, sugar, eggs, flour and vanilla essence together until pale and fluffy.

2. Divide the mixture into two separate bowls, add the cocoa to one half of the sponge mixture and the orange zest to the other half.

3. Fill the piping bags, separately, with each flavour and pipe alternate lines lengthwise over the shortbread until it is covered (should look stripy).

4. Return to the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden. The sponge should spring back when touched.

5. Cool in the tin.

Icing

65g gluten free plain chocolate 2 dessert spoons cocoa powder, sifted 100g butter 150g light brown sugar 4 tbsp milk 60g icing sugar, sifted Zest of 1 medium orange 1. Melt the chocolate, cocoa powder, butter, sugar and milk over a low heat, until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Beat in the orange zest and icing sugar.

3. Spoon the icing over the cake and leave to set (takes about 1 ½ hours).

4. Once the icing has set, slice into 18 pieces and store in an airtight tin. Keeps for 2 -3 days.

This combination of old and new reflects Gardiner Opticians’ philosophy. “There had been an opticians on our old site for 30 years. I took over the practice when the previous owner, Wendy Carey, retired but I’ve always strived to retain the traditional values of personal service and genuine client care that was at the heart of the business,” says Catriona. “The move means we can build on this reputation within a contemporary spacious environment, with all the latest eye care and computer technology needed to modernise

the business.”

Catriona had worked alongside Wendy for 12 years, before taking over the business in 2012, but sharing the same ethos of genuine client care meant that both staff and clients have remained incredibly loyal.

More recently the practice has noticed a trend away from traditional metal to more adventurous acetate frames.

“It’s really important when you’re wearing glasses everyday to get the right choice for you, in terms of styling and comfort,” explains Catriona. “All of our staff and dispensers really

know their stuff, which means they can offer great advice in helping clients choosing frames. Our main concern is that everyone leaves feeling happy and satisfied.”

As technology has advanced, most prescriptions are suitable for contact lenses and it seems that the trend for daily disposables is showing no signs of slowing down.

“Disposable contact lenses are really popular these days as they’re so convenient. People like the fact that you don’t have to clean them, there’s a reduced chance of infection as deposits don’t have a chance to build up on the lenses, they’re great for most sports and they’re a good option for those who have to wear glasses all the time as it gives them the chance to have a break from wearing spectacles,” says Catriona. In fact, the practice has seen a growing trend in clients adopting a mix and match approach to wearing both glasses and contact lenses.

Eye health is vital for quality

of life and regular eye tests are always recommended. “Eye tests are important because as well as giving people an idea of their general eye health, we also screen for various eye conditions. Some of these have few initial symptoms, but like all health issues, the earlier problems can be detected the better the outcome, as it limits the damage being done.”

Catriona explains that regular eye tests are particularly important for children, diabetics, those with a family history of glaucoma, the elderly and those buying off the peg reading glasses. As natural changes occur to your vision in your forties and early fifties, an eye test can help to explain what is happening to your vision now and what to expect over the coming years.

Gardiner Opticians is also proud to be part of the Acute Community Eye Service (ACES), a free NHS community service which works with local GPs to assess and manage certain medical eye conditions.

Alongside her work at Gardiner Opticians, Catriona also works at the Princess Royal and Sussex Eye Hospital as a specialist paediatric optometrist.

Walk

Starting and finishing at Hassocks Railway Station, Les Campbell celebrates 10 years of walking with Sussex Living by revisiting his very first walk, a 6 mile circular After ten years since my very first walk for Sussex Living I thought now is the appropriate time to repeat my steps. I have updated the walk description where necessary, and have changed the route around Ditchling. The walk involves one steep uphill climb and one steep descent, which may be slippery in wet conditions.

From the East side of Hassocks Railway Station, drop down to Keymer Road, and just before the railway bridge, go up some steps and follow the signed path which runs for about a mile along the east side of the railway.

When you reach the road, turn left to the road junction. Cross the Ditchling road and go through a kissing gate, and across Clayton Green to the car park entrance in the far corner.

Clayton Church to your right is well worth a visit for the wall paintings alone.

Cross Underhill Lane and follow a bridleway uphill to a gate leading on to open downland.

Turn right and climb steeply to eventually reach the car park beside Jack and Jill Windmills.

These two windmills are probably the most well known landmarks on the South Downs. Jack is currently

undergoing extensive restoration work.

Go through the car park, and turn left gently uphill along a rough track and take the left fork.

After about a mile, Keymer Post is reached at a four-way signpost.

Carry straight on for about 200 yards, until you come to a small gate in the fence on your left.

Go through this gate, and go diagonally right downhill on a well-defined path to Underhill Lane. The chalk surface of this path can be very slippery when damp. Turn right along Underhill Lane and in about 150 yards look for a

signed path on your left.

Go over the stile, and follow the waymarked path through several fields to eventually join a narrow path leading into a housing estate on the outskirts of Ditchling. Turn left and take an enclosed path indicated by a no cycling sign (very faded!) which leads out to the road junction of the B2112 and Beacon Road.

Turn left on a wide grassy verge at the last house (no.16) cross to the signed path opposite.

Go through a gate and follow a right hand field edge keeping right to join an unsurfaced track by a pair of cottages. Go up this track to join the B2116 on the outskirts of Ditchling. If you want to visit Ditchling village turn right.

Cross to Lodge Hill Lane opposite, and follow it past the pond and where the lane bears left, turn right into Boddingtons Lane. Just before the house on your right, go left on a permissive path which takes you up on to Lodge Hill. At the top of the hill, pause to admire the view then go straight on to join Lodge Hill Lane once again.

Turn right, and almost immediately, look for a stile on continued on page 62

your left. Go over this and turn right to follow a ridge path which becomes enclosed, out to a rough parking area by Oldland Mill. This historic post mill has been restored by a dedicated group of volunteers and is owned by the Hassocks Amenity Association. It is open to the public on selected dates only.

Follow Mill Lane downhill to join Ockley Lane.

Cross to the opposite pavement, and turn right round the bend then left on a wide track opposite Ockley Manor.

Follow this obvious track past Woodside ignoring the path off to your right, and go straight ahead through the Clayton Mills housing estate to the bottom of Woodsland Road. At the top of this road turn right for the station.

Be a Christmas Goddess A comfortable Christmas doesn’t have to mean wearing a gaudy snowman jumper. For clothes that pack a punch, look fab but are comfy enough to relax in and festively expand, look no further – no excuse to be trussed up like the turkey!

Thinking about that mandatory family afternoon country walk on Christmas Day and Boxing Day? A cable knit sweater, a flash of tartan and sturdy boots are the answer to “how do I keep warm?” without donning that aforementioned novelty jumper. An Aran sweater looks as great with simple trousers as it does with a lace or checked shirt. The trick to not overheating when juggling walks, cooking and sitting round the dinner table is layers – pick some knitwear that isn’t too chunky and pop on a silk shirt with a nice top underneath for extra warmth.

Monochrome is still a strong choice at Christmas. It’s fashionable and pulls together any outfit without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Choose a shirt with a monochrome pattern, that you feel is suitably festive and pair with some sleek leggings (perfect for after-dinner tummies) or flannel trousers.

If you feel that these options are too casual to suit how you envisage your Christmas Day outfit looking, a hint of glitz and glamour can still be made comfortable. A sparkly top with jeans and your favourite snuggly slippers, a cashmere jumpsuit or black lace culottes with a cashmere jumper are just some of the options to add a subtle touch of luxury to your day.

Silk, satin and lace all strike the right note of glamour and look amazing with a red wool cardigan. Try this in a turtlenecked variation – at the moment, these are really topping the fashion charts. Or blend feminine pieces with masculine, or with something unexpected – like a chunky knit with a lovely, floaty skirt or leather leggings and boots with a pretty blouse to add some fun to your outfit.

Shoes! What a conundrum. Slippers?

Heels? Flats? I personally can’t deal with heels when there are so many presents to be opened and so much food and wine to eat and drink. Add some silver studded flats to sparkle, some fur lined boots, some sturdy brogues or some simple jewelled, pointed flats – to name but a few options.

With one less thing to worry about, go and enjoy the build up to Christmas – present lists, tree decorating and menu settings await!

A Winter

Flock A flock of wheeling longtailed tits capture Ruth Lawrence’s imagination this month as she takes a winter stroll in the countryside

An afternoon stroll in light woodland at the edge of Chailey Common seemed strangely quiet. Other than the rumble of cars passing over cattle grids and the occasional caw of a distant crow, the air was still and silent.

The sound of sharply fluttering wings came from nowhere, accompanied by high pitched trilling calls; it was a flock of one of our smallest birds, the diminutive long-tailed tit. I stood still as at least a dozen flitted among the slim branches of silver birch above my head.

Long-tailed tits live in family parties of up to twenty, consisting of a brood, its parents and extra adults who help raise the brood if their own has failed. As winter approaches, each flock maintains a vigorously defended winter territory that can expand to 25 hectares. They seemed to move as one through the trees, calling continuously; their togetherness is a survival mechanism because their low weight of less than 8g means that they need one

another’s body heat on freezing winter nights. Huddling close in large groups allows them to survive the cold for they are unusually small for birds at this latitude. Their bodies seem little more than small feathered spheres, beautifully marked with dusky pink patches contrasting with their black and white plumage; it’s the extra long tail that serves to double their length.

The nest of a long-tailed tit is a remarkable home; constructed from moss, spider silk and up to two thousand feathers, it is a fully enclosed dome, leaving only a small entrance hole for extra protection against rats, squirrels, magpies and stoats. It is camouflaged on the outside by tiny flakes of lichen, chosen for their grey green colour so that the pale surface makes the nest very hard to detect. The spider silk helps to anchor nest-

to-branch while the cocoons and eggs double as nutritious food. The silk lends the nest an unusual quality, enabling it to expand to accommodate the growing chicks. Nests built early in the season can take three weeks to complete whereas late ones can be hastily assembled in as little as a week of concentrated effort. Studies have shown that pairs who lose a brood will often help to raise those of another pair.

It seems that the net gain of offspring raised with helpers is greater than the gain made if attempting another brood of their own.

After a few brief moments of watching the family flock enliven the autumn air with chatter and movement, they departed as one; I could hear their talk diminish with distance and the branches quieted once more, settling as the tiny wings flew on. www.sussexliving.com

When the Christmas lights are turned on, what better way to get into the holiday spirit than taking to the ice? This has been a traditional winter activity for hundreds of years and anyone who has read Tolstoy can picture a scene of people bundled up in massive fur coats and muffs, looking ridiculously fabulous. Trousers or leggings are probably a safer choice and less of a trip hazard than skirts or dresses.

A nice pair of gloves or mittens are a must – think cable knit wool or cashmere – and you could always add a faux-fur kubanka to be reminiscent of tsarist Russia.

Remember, ice skating is hard work – kind of like a fun work out – so don’t get too wrapped up.

with care Keeping precious clothes in tip-top condition is a job for a specialist; Ruth Lawrence went along to Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaning to discover what it takes to look after those delicate garments Sarah’s family have been providing a high quality dry cleaning service for over a century and a half and she has just invested in a state of the art machine that is capable of cleaning the most challenging fabrics. The machine, supplied and fitted

by Sussex based Dane Realstar is suitably imposing, using the latest technology to clean delicate items more gently with its solvent chiller system. Especially suited to silks, wedding dresses, beaded or sequined outfits and vintage fabrics, the unit operates at a lower temperature and prevents solvents entering the atmosphere.

Safer for the environment and the wellbeing of staff, the machine has an ecological filter and a decolouring filter which reduces the risk of colour bleeds. It can be programmed for specific items to ensure that each cherished garment receives the attention it deserves.

A new wet cleaning system has also been introduced, using specialist detergents to clean items that cannot normally be washed or dry cleaned such as sheepskin rugs and some curtains, chair and suite covers. Clients can bring in an item and discuss it with Sarah and her team before leaving it for cleaning; that might be an irreplaceable wedding dress or a delicate vintage garment.

Christmas cheer and Christmas fear go hand in hand this time of year, so settle back for three ghostly tales from our readers chilling enough to wake the dead and send you off straight home to bed Do you hear things go bump in the night? Does your blood run cold when you fl ick on the bedside light and catch dark shadows slipping from the sides of your vision? Does your mind wander to wonder what lies at the bottom of the garden, waiting with clawed hand and rasping breath?

Chilled to the bone and bristling with fear, we all know the stomach lurch of ghostly encounters – a visit from beyond the grave, a warning from a drifting spirit or perhaps just one too many late night ghost stories told around the fi re on Christmas Eve…

The return of

Mrs Harrison Christmas 1959

Mrs Smithson reviewed her day. Cosily tucked up in bed, she was pleased that her Christmas plans were taking shape. It was the family’s first Christmas in the house, a fine old Edwardian home, and Mrs Smithson had been to the library to look up how the first families may have prepared for this festive season half a century or so before. The children had, with only a little bickering, made paper chains by interleaving coloured strips of crêpe paper. Cards were strung from the mantelpiece.

She opened her eyes, it really was very dark – she couldn’t see the time.

Her husband snored gently beside her. She turned over, and through the shadows was quite, quite certain that by her bed was a woman, slightly bent over, wrapped in a shawl. She blinked, no, the shape was still there.

“Don’t be stupid,” she told herself. “You are a grown woman, it must be shadows. Turn over and close your eyes tight, she’ll go away.”

A few moments later, she couldn’t help but look again. The woman was still there, unmoving. Mrs Smithson thought about all the families who had lived in her house. She remembered the kind Mrs Harrison, from whom they had bought it. Mrs Harrison and her late husband had called it home for several decades, and didn’t Mrs Harrison say to her, “I love this house, you won’t mind if I come and live here again when I die?”

“Your head is playing tricks,” she told herself.

“You are the wife of a colonel, you don’t give in to such imaginations. Anyway, wouldn’t she be happily reunited with her husband?”

The cat door flapped down in the kitchen, the cat mewed as it came into the room. Then it hissed, and Mrs Smithson heard it scrabble downstairs.

“Oh-oh,” she said to herself. She opened an eye again. Yes, the shadowy figure was definitely there. Should she talk to it? No, she couldn’t encourage it. What was she thinking? Encourage a shadow? Come, come, woman.

Mrs Smithson moved over closer to her husband, just to be safe. She was, despite her common sense approach to the shadows, rather nervous.

Next she knew, it was Christmas Eve morning. There is so much to do, come on everyone, let’s get busy. Then she recalled her “visitor”. Wasn’t she silly, must have done more than was good for her the day before.

That afternoon she fussed her husband to go and collect the turkey. Fresh, of course, direct from the farm, as in the olden days. The neighbour waved, and called her over.

“Oh, Mrs Smithson, I’ve just heard. Poor Mrs Harrison, who lived in your house, died peacefully in her bed last evening”.

Christmas Eve in The Cadgwith Cove Inn and John was having a few pre-Christmas rums with his yarntelling friends. Outside the wind and sea were rising – it was going to be a wet holiday. Inside the fi re roared and Peter, Cornwall’s fi nest storyteller began to tell his tale of the Stripple Stones Strangler.

It was a beautifully crafted, on the spot yarn made more dramatic by the crashing waves.

The whole pub was captivated, the silence complete. As Peter fi nished there was the rushing sound of the pub’s audience exhaling, then spontaneous applause.

As usual, John had those extra drinks he would regret during the night. His wife often ribbed that story telling was just an excuse to get sozzled. True, he had outstayed his time tonight but wasn’t it for art? “Watch out for the strangler, John,” the landlord said cheerily as he bolted the door.

Collar up against the rising wind and sea spray, rolling clouds obscured the moon. Only 3 miles home, a mixture of farmland and lanes he knew like the back of his hand. A sudden squall soaked him to the skin but fortified by the rum he soldiered on. “Great tale, great tale,” he mumbled to himself and wondered if he could embellish it a bit for next summer’s visitors. More rum he thought.

Above the wind and crashing waves, he heard

a fl apping sound. He stopped, straining to hear but there was nothing. He quickened his pace and now he distinctly heard the “fl ip-fl ap” sound. He stopped; it stopped. He turned to face his pursuer but met a wall of darkness. Panic began to set in and he broke into a half run. “Flip-fl ap; fl ipfl ap; fl ip-fl ap” the sound got louder. The faster he moved the quicker the sound became.

He climbed the fi nal gate and stepped back on to the road. Sheltered by the wall the wind and waves seemed distant. He paused briefly to catch his breath. He was close to home now. As he moved away, “fl ip-fl ap”; “fl ip-fl ap”. He stopped.

Silence again apart from his alcohol fumed breath.

He moved, whatever was behind moved. Looking down he noticed his soaked and muddied jeans had become board like. He moved forward and his jeans legs slapped against each other, “fl ip-fl ap”. He moved faster and the sound grew louder. He broke into a manic laugh which became a belly roar as he realised his fear was caused by himself! This would make a great story too, he said to himself as he hurried home to tell his wife.

By now he was completely oblivious to the storm, the rain tipping and the wind howling around him. So oblivious that he did not notice a fi nal “fl ip-fl ap” as a pair of icy hands closed around his throat. continued on page 78

It was James who suggested a game of Blind Man’s Buff. In one fluid movement, he turned off the light switch and smacked Megan on the shoulder, calling “Tag, you’re it!”. We shushed her protesting howl with threatened punishments. James was the eldest and I was smart enough to take his side in arguments. Besides, given the choice, I’d rather have Meg coming after me in the dark.

Stepping out of my shoes I tiptoed towards the wall. Soon there were muffled thumps and Meg cried, “You’re it, you’re it!”. James said nothing in reply so I felt towards the door and switched the light back on. Meg stood red-faced by the table. James was leaning against the windowsill.

“One of you was there,” Meg said, pointing at the unoccupied chair. “Your hair felt all springy under my hand.”

“Not me,” I said, shrugging.

James just laughed. “I was hiding. Why would I sit at the table?”

He was convincing, as usual.

I tried to keep the peace. “Look Meg, James’ jumper is on the back of the chair. You probably felt that. It’s confusing in the dark.”

“Perhaps it was a ghost,” James added unhelpfully.

“Dad says there’s no such thing,” said Meg, glowering at James.

James rolled his eyes. “Fine, I’ll be it,” he said.

So I turned out the light again, and groped along the wall to the window. Then I draped

An icy draft seeped through gaps in the wooden window frames, intruding upon my cosy haven.

I buried myself deeper into the fabric. James had returned to the centre of the room, walking into the table, because I heard a loud metallic clunk and Megan gasped as he uttered a rude word.

With an inaudible sigh I sleepily watched my breath steaming up the windowpane. Then I looked beyond the glass into the limitless darkness outside and suddenly my chilly body froze right through. For there was a bloodless face, as thin as vapour and with vacant eyes staring at me! Hurriedly untangling myself from the curtain with a yell, I tripped and fell from my hiding place as the lights in the room went on again. Then, as I looked back and saw a pale bony hand moving rapidly away into the night I realised the ghostlike fi gure was... wearing my favourite jumper. I had been frightened of my own reflection in the glass!

“I slipped off the sill,” I told the others. I was not going to confess what really happened. I’d never hear the end of it. However, I soon had something else to preoccupy my mind. James was at the table looking as white as an alabaster statue.

“Very funny, Tom,” he said slowly, “you were sitting in that chair again, weren’t you?”

The rebirth of the

High Street?

Has the British High Street actually died or is it just unwell?

Are we starting to see the return to town centre living and its rebirth? Stuart Scholes, CEO of the East Grinstead Business Association fi nds out Most towns in Britain have experienced a decline in people living in their heart as they have followed the suburban trend. However, things seem to be changing nationally and especially in East Grinstead.

A town’s ‘high street’ is its main shopping street and in East Grinstead we are fortunate to have two – London Road and the High Street. We also have a number of tourist attractions such as the Bluebell Railway, the McIndoe statue and a Medieval High Street as well as a steadily increasing number of retail and service outlets – and not forgetting the cinema and night club.

For a long time East Grinstead has enjoyed a lower than the national average number of empty shops and now we are seeing an increase in take up with most empty shops in the high

street area currently either being refurbished or under offer. With the imminent arrival of a family friendly hotel chain and a cost effective store below combined with the probable move of a well established business to the Whitehall building and the complete rebuild of their current Queens Walk site, we shall see a transformation of retail in the centre.

Combine this with the conversion of redundant office blocks into flats (as facilitated by the recent Permitted Development legislation), more people will be living in the centre.

This in itself should boost retail and the restaurant business.

With a change in the Business Rates system shortly to be

implemented where local councils will decide how the revenues are spent, East Grinstead and similar town centres should enjoy an upturn to the ‘high street’ businesses. There will always be a lot to improve as nothing stands still but we are moving in the right direction. Yes, online trading is a threat to some of our high street retailers but it is an opportunity for those which harness the internet and social media.

Traffic and its management, as well as parking, are subjects to be addressed but we can say that East Grinstead is a destination and is truly Open4Business.
