2026 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Amy Murphy ’85, an experienced leader in the national theatre field with a 38-year history of working in the nonprofit theatre industry, is co-founder and managing director of Philadelphia’s Arden Theatre Company.
The Arden Theatre Company was founded in 1988 by Murphy, Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. The company began producing at the 70-seat Walnut Street Theatre Studio. In 1995, the Arden purchased and renovated a 50,000 square foot building in Old City, creating a thriving two-theatre complex, and a unified location for classes, education programs, administrative offices and production shops. In 2013, the Arden opened the Hamilton Family Arts Center, which houses six classrooms, a teacher resource center, the Arden’s rehearsal hall, scenic design shop and paint deck, and a third performance space.
The Arden’s presence has helped Old City emerge as one of the region’s most popular destinations, with a significant economic impact on the neighborhood. The move was also the catalyst for the creation of Arden Children’s Theatre in 1998, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre. Arden Children’s
Theatre was founded on the dual premises that children’s theatre must maintain the same high production values as their nationally respected Mainstage shows, and that theatre should be affordable for children and their families.
The Arden’s Education programs includes Arden for All, a theatre access and education program for underserved young people; Arden Drama School, offering after-school, Saturday and summer camp classes for pre-K through 12th-grade students; Teen Arden, an immersive after-school access program for Philadelphia-area teenagers; and the Arden Professional Apprentice Program, a nationally renowned comprehensive theatre management training program. The Arden has received 456 nominations and 77 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre.
An honorary Doctor of Humane Letters will be presented to Murphy, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications and theatre arts from Susquehanna University in 1985.

The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university functions dates back to the Middle Ages, when they were first worn to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. Through the years their style and color have come to represent certain meanings. The descriptions apply to institutions located in the United States. A number of variations are represented in the regalia worn by those who have received degrees from outside the United States.
Gowns for the bachelor’s degree have a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. Worn closed, it is primarily distinguished by its long-pointed sleeves.
Gowns for the master’s degree have the same yoke as that of the bachelor’s, but are designed so that they may be worn open or closed. The back of the sleeve is oblong and square cut, and the front has an arc cutaway.
Gowns for the doctoral degree are also worn open or closed. They have long velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
Caps, which are normally mortarboard, may be of serge, broadcloth, cotton, rayon or silk, or, for the doctoral gown only, of velvet; and the tassel of the doctoral cap may be of gold thread.
The distinctive, official Susquehanna University gown for bachelor’s degree and master’s degree candidates is maroon with black yoke and front panels. Many students wear colorful sashes, representing the country in which they fulfilled the study-away portion of their cross-cultural requirement. The tassel on the cap indicates the field of learning in which the degree is granted. The Susquehanna University doctoral degree gown, also of maroon, has black-velvet sleeve bars and front panels with orbs from the university seal embroidered in metallic gold. The faculty marshal also wears this gown.
It is the hood that gives color and definite meaning to the academic costume. The hood is a black shell of varying sizes for the three degrees and of material to match the gown. It is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper width and color to indicate the field of learning.
The President's Seal of Office and the University Mace, which is carried by the Faculty Marshal, are rich in symbolism, expressed in artistic forms and representative of Susquehanna’s heritage and purpose. The mace and seal were presented to the university in 1966 as a gift from the Class of 1963.
