Lunch at Ram’s Head Inn
Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island is that hidden oasis that everyone must visit, whether you are a seasoned visitor or resident of Shelter Island to one who is visiting for the first time. During my lunch on a Wednesday afternoon, my guest and I met families from as close as Manhattan and those vacationing all the way from Northern Italy, who expressed how much they loved the Inn. Lunch for us was such a perfect time to dine outdoors. With the abundance of sunshine and picturesque views of the backyard and beach, it is the place to unwind and grab a delicious bite to eat.
To start, I had the Sunsplash cocktail made with Belvedere Ginger Zest, Cointreau, Orange blossom water, lemon, lime, and orange juices, and a splash of cranberry ($15). It was so refreshing and paired very well with the salad and duck quesadillas. Additional, notable cocktails (all are $15) include the Basil Breeze made with house infused basil vodka, and the Honeycomb Fix with Herradura Reposado Tequila and honey syrup. For our appetizers, we had the house special Gazpacho, and the Watermelon and Baby Arugula Salad: feta cheese, candied walnuts and balsamic glaze ($14). The gazpacho, according to my guest, was so authentic that it reminded her of when she spent time in Spain years earlier. It was freshly prepared with a touch of spice with the tomatoes perfectly purÊed. The Watermelon and Arugula Salad was the ideal portion as a starter. For my entree, I had the Duck Confit Quesadillas: hummus, smoked gouda, mixed greens ($19). The quesadillas were served warm with fresh salsa, sour cream and a side salad. The portion is ideally for having without a starter. This dish was so delicious; I was only able to eat two, bringing the rest home. I would definitely order that dish again and I don’t normally order duck.
Additional lunch options include Roasted Red Beets, Heirloom Tomato & Burrata, Seared Sea Scallops, and Rams Head Burger. Dessert options for lunch are each $12 and include Lemon Pudding Cake with whipped cream, an Apple Tart with vanilla ice cream, Chocolate Cake with caramelized bananas, and Vanilla Creme Brulee. We chose to split the Chocolate Cake with was also topped with roasted peanuts and served with coffee ice cream. We both paired our dessert with cappuccinos ($5.50). Lunch is currently served seven days a week from 12-3pm. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Please call after Labor Day for updated lunch and dinner hours. http://www.theramsheadinn.com/restaurant-and-bar-menus // 631-749-0811

RA M’S H EAD IN N O K TOB ERFES T 2017
This past Saturday, October 21st, my family and I celebrated Oktoberfest at Ram’s Head Inn in Shelter Island. At the event that went from 1-5pm, there was live music from Points East, a Pig Roast, pumpkin painting, lawn games, local brews & ciders, and classic German fare. The buffet table included Bratwurst, butternut squash, corn salad, and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. The buffet was served from 1-3:30pm. A raffle benefitting AmeriCares hurricane relief efforts for Puerto Rico was also featured with prizes from DoubleTree by Hilton Times Square West, Isola Restaurant, Lieb Cellars, EFL Kids, Dering Harbor Co Aerial prints, and more. The drawing took place at the end of the event.
We arrived at 3pm and spent most of our time own the lawn listening to the music and paling games including the beanbag toss and bocce ball.
The lawn chairs of the Rams Head Inn allow for beautiful views of the water and create a sense of complete relaxation. We could easily spend the entire day there. Nearby were two
hammocks that we lounged on as we watched the sunset. There is also play equipment for children to play on while the adults relaxed.
EFL Kids
Below you will see my food plate, which was so hearty and delicious! There was also a selfserve popcorn machine inside.

Here's the best small town in every state FrankOlito
Frank Olito - December 26, 2018

While cities are known for being culture hubs and centers of entertainment, small towns have just as much to offer. All across America, small towns are becoming art havens, fine dining meccas, and top travel destinations. Researchers even found that people living in small towns are happier than those who live in more urban environments. INSIDER went state-by-state to find small towns with a plethora of activities for both locals and visitors. While some of the towns and villages are bustling tourist destinations, others are quiet suburban communities that are home to only a select few. From the East Coast to the West Coast, these are the best small towns in the US (all populations according to the US Census Bureau).
NEW YORK: Shelter Island
Shelter Island, New York. Population: 1,371
While upstate New York is filled with small, quaint towns, the state's best small town is actually Shelter Island. Nestled between Long Island's North and South forks, Shelter Island is a great getaway town for city dwellers and an even greater alternative to the uber popular Hamptons. The island town is known for its outdoor activities, which include first-rate beaches. Shelter Island also has the Mashomack Preserve, which is a protected area with wetlands and woods that you can explore at your own leisure. If you're interested in history, the Shelter Island Historical Society in a 1743 farmhouse is the perfect place to visit.

North Fork, Shelter Island mixologists share their go-to summer cocktails by Beth Ann Mayer
Living on Long Island has its perks, one of the biggest being you’re always just a hop, skip and jump from the water. During the warmer months, this makes it easy for an afternoon to feel like a vacation — head to a beach or marina for a reprieve from reality. Island time calls for a cocktail. At local watering holes, bartenders craft fresh, fruity seasonal libations known for giving patrons a different — arguably better — kind of summer glow. But when the tide is taking you closer to the actual water, consider going the DIY route.
To help you navigate beachside bartending like a pro, these five North Fork mixologists are spilling on their favorite cocktail recipes. Whether you’re on a chauffeured sail around the Sound of dropping anchor in your own backyard, these beverages are full of summer spirit. Basil Breeze Harry Brigham, bar manager and mixologist, Ram’s Head Inn, Shelter Island Though it’s possible to do Shelter Island in a day, spots like the Ram’s Head Inn have visitors docking and staying a while. And when on vacation, there’s no need to choose between beer and cocktails. The Basil Breeze offers the best of both worlds. “The beer’s grapefruit overtones combine nicely with the fresh basil flavor to make this a particularly refreshing drink for a hot afternoon,” said Brigham, who makes his own basilinfused vodka using herbs from the garden. “When heading out for a day on the water, people want something light, fresh and fruity. We like to create cocktails that aren’t over the top and still retain the flavor of the base spirit.” Ingredients 1 bunch fresh basil 1 bottle vodka Half a lemon Schofferhofer Grapefruit Beer Ice Instructions for basil-infused vodka: Take leaves off one bunch of basil. In a pitcher, add leaves and one bottle vodka. Let sit in a dark space for three days. Remove leaves and pour vodka back into bottle. For the Basil Breeze: In a mixing cup with ice, add 2 oz. vodka and the juice of half a lemon. Shake or stir.Strain into 12 oz. glass with ice. Top off with grapefruit beer. Garnish with a basil leaf.

ENVY-WORTHY DINING ON NEW YORK'S SHELTER ISLAND 17 September 2018 Lauren deLisa Coleman Travel As the days become shorter and the nights become a bit more chilly, The Hamptons-area of Long Island, New York still draws many as a great weekend getaway destination from the upcoming Hamptons International Film Festival to visiting the surrounding area wineries and more. Naturally, food goes hand-in-hand with such destinations. And should you find yourself in the area, there are two key dining locations that should top your list for a ferry visit over to Shelter Island. For a bit more fine dining, consider The Ram's Head Inn on the opposite side of the Island. Known for its crisp air bed and breakfast accommodations that are just as much revered as its idyllic site for wedding receptions, birthday events and more, The Ram's Head Inn restaurant offers an array of fine dishes amidst a breathtaking natural landscape.
From inspired beet salads with a perfect topping of pistachios that add just a bit of extra saltiness to perfectly compliment the sweetness of the beets to large, juicy bison burgers, the restaurant offers fine dining with attention to detail. However, not to be missed is the restaurant's dessert menu which features an apple tart that is worthy of any cooking channel championship. The secret is that the dish is baked upside down giving it a sumptuous dough-y lusciousness that combines perfectly with just the right amount of pectin, cinnamon and more. An ideal fall finish to any entree ordered here. Ram's Head chef, Manny Fundura explains, "The apple tart starts with sliced apples that are tossed with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and a touch of salt. It is then placed in a cheesecloth or a fine strainer to drain a bit. The apples are placed in a pan and caramelized. Finally, the apples are covered with puff pastry and cooked until the pastry is golden brown and crispy. It is then turned outward, similar to a tarte tatin." While the beach may no longer beckon, the area offers the luxury that only the early fall season could offer. It is made all the more wonderful by dining from some of the best in the area.
