The owners of Italian eatery Caci North Fork in Southold (56125 Main Road) have opened a second location, Caci Shelter Island, at the historic and luxury boutique hotel, The Shelter Island House, located at 11 Stearns Point Road in Shelter Island Heights.

Caci Shelter Island plans to offer a seasonally inspired menu featuring authentic Northern Italian cuisine by Umbrian-born Executive Chef Marco Pellegrini that is simplistic, inventive and dedicated to all things fresh and house-made. Specialties include locally sourced and imported Italian ingredients along with house made pasta, gnocchi, bread and

gelato. Pellegrini will be Executive Chef to both Caci locations, maintaining a consistent menu and dining experience for the brand.

Short for Cacioppo, Caci is owned by husband and wife Anthony and Daniele Cacioppo; and Joseph and Kelly Cacioppo. The restaurant’s partnership with The Shelter Island House came about organically—Joseph has known the hotel’s owners, sisters Suzanne Walsh and Janet Rogler, going all the way back to childhood. Both families grew up in Garden City and spent their summers on the East End, sharing the same experiences and traditions of raising several generations of family on both the North Fork and Shelter Island.

“After several discussions regarding both businesses, it became apparent that Caci taking over restaurant operations at Shelter Island House would be a winning collaboration and a complement for both Caci and The Shelter Island House brands, and happened at just the right time for us to expand,” Anthony Cacioppo says. “We have always loved visiting Shelter Island, and the historic charm of this graciously restored inn really attracted us to the opportunity to have our second location here.”

Daniele and Anthony Cacioppo had been in search of the right partner to open up a restaurant on the North Fork since 1995 when they bought their first home in Southold. “We never thought that we would find him years later while in Italy on vacation,” Daniele says, explaining how they met Pellegrini. “It was a magical connection, Marco’s authentic and simple style was exactly what we were in search of, and the moment Marco described his philosophy of ‘One Actor,’ we asked Marco to take a look at the North Fork and the wheels started turning.”

Since bringing his family from Italy to open Caci North Fork in 2014, Pellegrini has infused his Northern Italian background into the seasonal and locally-sourced menu. Growing up in the picturesque town of Foligno, located in the center of the Italian peninsula, Pellegrini made the decision to become a chef at a very young age. During stints at a number of highly acclaimed restaurants throughout Italy, he learned to research and select the finest ingredients by forging bonds with local farmers.

“I am inspired by the agriculture and aquaculture the North Fork offers, and believe that the access to these fresh ingredients provides me the opportunities to create an unforgettable dining experience,” Pellegrini says. “I am really looking forward to bringing this unique menu, as well as tastes of Central and Northern Italy, to Shelter Island.”

Caci Shelter Island will offer their North Fork location’s Wine Spectator Award of Excellencewinning wine list featuring North Fork and Italian wines, along with local and Italian beers on tap or by the bottle, as well as seasonal craft cocktails.

While Caci Shelter Island has been operating since May, the restaurant’s grand opening is set for Memorial Day Weekend. The restaurant plans to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Guests can choose to be seated in any of the three dining rooms, cozy bar area or spacious covered patio. A Happy Hour menu is available at the bar, which can also be enjoyed in the outdoor lounge or bocce court, Thursday–Monday, 3–5 p.m.

The new Caci Shelter Island will be situated in the historic and luxury boutique hotel, The Shelter Island House.

The Cacioppo family, who own Caci, have known sisters Suzanne Walsh and Janet (Walsh) Rogler, who

own the hotel, for many, many years - making this new endeavor a natural fit. Growing up both families resided in Garden City, but spent many beloved summers on the East End. "After several discussions regarding both businesses, it became apparent that Caci taking over restaurant operations at Shelter Island House would be a winning collaboration and a complement for both Caci & The Shelter Island House brands, and happened at just the right time for us to expand," Anthony Cacioppo said. The Shelter Island outpost will showcase a seasonally inspired menu highlighting authentic Northern Italian cuisine from Umbrian-born Executive Chef Marco Pellegrini. The restaurant will source many ingredients locally and also import imperative components from Italy for Caci favorites like house made pasta, gnocchi, bread, and gelato. Chef Pellegrini will helm both East End locations.

a ferry for the chance to expand when the restaurant operations at the hotel became available.

“We all agreed that pairing the inn’s chic and modern accommodations with our simple, authentic and seasonally inspired [Italian] cuisine was a winning combination,” said co-owner Daniele Cacioppo who plans to open the new eatery with partners Anthony, Joseph and Kelly Cacioppo on May 25. “The Cacioppo family and the Walsh family (owners of Shelter Island House) have all been close friends for years, so it could not be a better fit.”

The new island location also couldn’t get any more perfect. The new venture is set just up the hill from the beach and with a private garden meaning relaxation will come with the territory. Inside the 68-seat restaurant the vibe will be simple and welcoming. There will be three dining rooms, a comfortable bar area, spacious covered patio, an outdoor lounge and front porch seating.

Umbrian-born chef Marco Pellegrini will be the executive chef for both locations overseeing food preparation and quality. Like the Southold location, the new restaurant will offer a seasonally inspired menu featuring authentic northern and central Italian cuisine that is “simplistic, inventive and dedicated to all things fresh and house-made.� Think locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables, house-made gelato and pasta and bread that are crafted in the pasta kitchen at Caci North Fork. Cacioppo is especially excited about the taglierini and little neck clams and grilled lamb chops on the summer menu.

New to Caci, the Shelter Island spot will offer breakfast. Diners can expect classic frittatas and omelettes, fresh fruits, sweets with an Italian accent like pan brioche French toast and vanilla infused buffalo ricotta pancakes.

“We wanted to offer a full breakfast menu to the Shelter Island House hotel guest as well as the public as another way to enjoy the beautiful setting here along with chef Marco’s incredible cooking.”

And what better way to take it all in than with a refreshing drink? Two new bourbon cocktails will make their way to Caci Shelter Island. (They will also debut at Caci North Fork May 4.) The North Fork Cooler will be a mix of bourbon, lemongrass simple syrup, cucumber juice and mint while the La Strada will be comprised of bourbon, campari, carpano antica and blood orange twist. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The classic Blueberry Smash, that used to be made with bourbon, will now be twisted with gin, amaro, muddled blueberry and citrus.

“The restaurant scene on the island is so unique, and we are thrilled to become a part of it. We hope to offer an experience to islanders and visitors that reflects what a special place this is.”

Caci North Fork, one of the North Fork’s best restaurants, is taking a trip south. Not all the way to the Hamptons, but to Shelter Island. In May, the Southold Italian eatery will open a second location at the Shelter Island House. The inn’s restaurant, The Tavern at Shelter Island, will be transformed into Caci Shelter Island.

Caci, owned by brothers and sisters-in-law Anthony, Daniele, Joseph and Kelly Cacioppo, opened in 2014. Chef-partner Marco Pellegrini moved from his native Umbria to the North Fork to run the kitchen, and he promptly earned three stars from Newsday and secured (and has retained) a place on our Top 10 Italian list.

The menu at CSI is similar in price and tone to that of CNF. Starters, such as grilled calamari skewers with breadcrumbs, are $16 to $19; homemade pastas, such as buffalo-milk-ricotta ravioli with black truffles, $19 to $22; mains, such as grilled lamb chops with apple chutney, are $32 to $44.

But Shelter Island also offers a selection of crudo (seasoned raw fish, $19 to $22) and will serve breakfast and happy hour (menus not yet finalized).

Pellegrini will supervise both kitchens.

The collaboration is the product of a longtime friendship between the owners of the inn and the restaurant. Sisters Janet Rogler and Suzanne Walsh bought the historic hotel in 2015. It had a long run as the Olde Country Inn and was briefly the Gallic-chic La Maison Blanche before they took it over. Initially, the inn’s restaurant, the Tavern at Shelter Island, was a joint venture with the well-

regarded island restaurant SALT. It closed earlier this year and everyone involved hopes to reopen by Memorial Day weekend.

Caci Shelter Island will be open nine months of the year and plans to host special events with the hotel during the winter months.

New, refreshed restaurants in the Hamptons, Montauk and more

By Lauren Chattman June 20, 2018 9:25 AM Each year, as the summer approaches, a slew of new Hamptons restaurants fling open their doors. This year, notably, there aren’t quite as many new places as in the past.

Perhaps it’s because the past few seasons have been successful ones for current tenants. Says Andrea Ackerman, associate broker with Brown Harris Stevens of the Hamptons, “On the East End, real estate is very limited in terms of zoning for restaurants. If a restaurant has staying power, it’s going to stay where it is and expand by opening up in other locations when they become available.”

Thus, the often volatile Hamptons restaurant scene may have reached a certain equilibrium. “Bobby Van’s in Bridgehampton, Nick & Toni’s in East Hampton,” says Ackerman, who’s been in the business for more than 30 years, “every town and village has its staples.” Newer, but showing signs of long-term success, are Wölffer Kitchen in Sag Harbor and Elaia Estiatorio in Bridgehampton.

The news right now is about refreshing, renovating and expanding old favorites such as Sen in Sag Harbor and Claudio’s in Greenport, and the resurrection of Moby’s at East Hampton Point.

For diners seeking the thrill of the new, Maison Vivienne in Southampton offers a taste of the south of France, and Culaccino in Water Mill serves modern Italian fare. Later in the season, look for the opening of Sag Pizza, taking Conca D’Oro’s place on Main Street in Sag Harbor.

Caci to open second location on Shelter Island

Caci North Fork, the highly regarded northern Italian eatery in Southold, is opening a second location on Shelter Island.

Caci Shelter Island will open in May at the former home of The Tavern at the Shelter Island House. Guests of the new 68-seat restaurant can expect the same locally sourced dishes and house-made pasta Caci is known for on the North Fork.

“The menu will mirror Caci North Fork,” said Umbrian-born executive chef Marco Pellegrini.

“The starters will be the same. The pasta will be the same. Every sauce, every dish, every portion is going to be tasted by my Italian mouth.”

Caci North Fork opened in a restored farmhouse in 2014 and quickly gained a following for its refined cuisine and ambiance. Pellegrini, along with his wife Sabrina Vallorini, will continue to make all the sauces, breads, pastas and desserts by hand for the new location.

Pelligrini is now executive chef at both locations and will split his time between the two. Caci has brought on two new chefs de cuisine to execute the dishes alongside two longtime Caci chefs who have trained under Pellegrini. Half of the staff — including servers and the management team — are also moving to the Shelter Island restaurant.

“The whole team will be experienced and trained,” Pellegrini said. “They will already know the menu. It takes things to another level.”

The Italian and local lineup on Caci’s award-winning wine list will be making the trip, too. The bar will also offer a selection of North Fork and Italian beers on tap or by the bottle as well as seasonal craft cocktails.

One new concept the Shelter Island location will offer is breakfast. Pellegrini is introducing an American breakfast with Italian accents (think: eggs with truffles) to accommodate guests of Shelter Island House.

The former causal dinning spot is currently undergoing a complete renovation into an upscale establishment akin to Caci North Fork. The overhaul includes an updated kitchen and a chic farmhouse aesthetic.

Caci co-owner Daniele Cacioppo said the intention was always to open a second location. The timing was serendipitous when Shelter Island House co-owner Janet Rogler approached them about the opportunity to open in the former Tavern.

“We knew it was time,” Cacioppo said. “We were attracted to the historic charm of this graciously restored inn. Happening at just the right time for Caci North Fork to expand, we all agreed that pairing beautiful accommodations with our simple, pure, authentic and inspired cuisine for the Shelter Island community was a winning combination.”

The restaurant is slated to open with a full spring menu by Memorial Day weekend.

Chefs dish on what to eat on Shelter Island this summer

Caci North Fork is regarded for its authentic Italian cuisine courtesy of Umbrian-born executive chef and partner Marco Pellegrini. So when the Southold staple opened a second location at the former The Tavern at the Shelter Island House in May, the chef decided to keep a good thing going by offering the same rotating seasonal bites in both restaurants. When the weather heats up, Pellegrini’s go-to is the Buffalo Mozzarella Caprese Salad.

“This is one of my favorite dishes for the summer since it is truly an expression of Italy, offering the classic Italian flavor combination of tomato, mozzarella and, basil — but with my own modern twist,” he said. “We have an amazing fresh Buffalo mozzarella imported directly from Italy every week, then we add incredible local heirloom tomatoes and, for that touch of fresh basil, I created our own house-made basil sorbet. East End The summer season on the East End of Long Island, including the Hamptons, the North Fork and Shelter Island, is kicking off, with most of the new places ready this weekend or by the end of the month.

BRIDGEHAMPTON: L & W Market, a storefront for local produce and products

EAST HAMPTON: Il Mulino, the popular Italian restaurant group, now has a gracious pondside Hamptons branch, 108 Wainscott Stone Road, ilmulino.com. Caci set to open in Tavern space on Memorial Day weekend

It’s all in the family — sort of. The owners of Shelter Island House and the owners of Caci North Fork grew up together as neighbors in Garden City and spent summers together on the East End, so it might be a natural evolution that the two businesses will now operate under one roof here.

Caci , a popular North Fork Italian restaurant, is opening its second venue at Shelter Island House on Memorial Day weekend, replacing The Tavern that operated at the site since the inception of the hotel run by sisters Suzanne Walsh and Janet Rogler.

Caci’s owners are Anthony and Danielle Cacioppo and Joseph and Kelly Cacioppo.

That the families shared so many traditions and experiences through the years made it a natural linking with the idea emerging during talks between family members who agreed it would be a winning combination.

“We have always loved visiting Shelter Island and the historic charm of this graciously restored inn really attracted us to the opportunity to have our second location here,” Anthony Cacioppo said. “After several discussions regarding both businesses, it became apparent that Caci taking over restaurant operations at Shelter Island House would be a winning collaboration and complement for both,” he said.

Success at luring Executive Chef Marco Pellegrini from Italy has resulted in the ability to feature authentic Northern Italian cuisine married to locally sourced ingredients that change season to season proved popular with customers on the North Fork and the same foods will be served on Shelter Island. Anthony and Danielle Cacioppo found him while vacationing in Italy and enticed him to become a partner in their North Fork business.

“I am inspired by the agriculture and aquaculture the North Fork offers and believe that the access to these fresh ingredients provides me the opportunities to create an unforgettable dining experience,” Chef Marco said.

Construction to convert The Tavern to Caci Shelter Island is underway with contractors working fast and furiously to prepare for the Memorial Day weekend opening.

The restaurant will feature three intimate dining rooms, the covered patio area for warm weather and a bar.

The owners plan to operate the restaurant nine months of the year and offer special events in conjunction with the hotel during winter months.

Shelter Island The owners of the former Shelter Island House and the owners of Caci North Fork have joined forces to open Caci Shelter Island on Memorial Day weekend. Like its sister restaurant in Southold, Caci Shelter Island will offer authentic Northern Italian cuisine featuring locally grown ingredients that change with the seasons.
