Pirongia Mountain Bike club hosts national XCO biking event

On Sunday, the 5th of February, the Pirongia Mountain Bike Club hosted the National XCO Series Round 3 on behalf of Mountain Bike New Zealand The XCO series is an annual event that usually happens in the main centres, but it was opened up to smaller clubs wanting to organize The Pirongia MTB Club signed up to host and met the criteria needed. The event is the first National racing event for Pirongia

The course had to be approved by Mountain Bike NZ officials, which had been under threat of cancellation due to the amount of rain. Competitors got the opportunity to practice on Saturday, before the race day

Over the two races, there were almost 80 competitors in over 12 categories of age from all over New Zealand Viewing areas for spectators were dotted around the park, using the existing forestry bait lines

The conditions in Round 1 and 2 were dry and dusty compared to Round 3 were muddy Which made for interesting riding and more technical experience required. Perfect conditions for the many support crew and spectators who attended the event
