“All my work keeps going like a pendulum; it seems to swing back to something I was involved with earlier, or it moves between horizontality and verticality, circularity, or a composite of them. For me, I suppose that change is the only constant.” Lee Krasner

“One of the things a cartoon does is to express violent emotion and passion in a completely mechanical and removed style. To express this thing in a painterly style would dilute it; the techniques I use are not commercial, they only appear to be commercial – and the ways of seeing and composing and unifying are different and have different ends.” Roy Lichtenstein

First Light is an editioned twenty-part retrospective of the artist’s planned projected light installations of 1966–67. The portfolio is divided into five subsets, each of which pictures a single shape of light: square, triangle, rectangle, parallelogram, or column, projected against a wall or corner. In this set, a cube seems to change position and shape from sheet to sheet. Turrell collaborated with master printer, Peter Kneubuhler of Zurich, who is known for his work with aquatint. This is a technique that allows for the use of tone rather than line. The artist considers First Light to be his most important printmaking project. While other works on paper are “about” his installation work, he has said, First Light is uniquely “like” his work. A set of these prints is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
