This week is the celebration of the 40th year of The Jazz Club of Sarasota and of our annual Jazz Festival. What better way to celebrate than to assemble over 160 of the finest national, regional and youth musicians in 40 performances held at 19 venues from the Sarasota Bayfront to Main Street and beyond. This Festival is the Jazz Club’s ultimate expression of its commitment to preserving and promoting Jazz, America’s original musical art form.

This week we honor the memory of Hal and Evelyn Davis, who founded the club in their home in 1980, shortly after “retiring” to Sarasota. By 1983 the club exceeded 850 members under Hal’s leadership and vision as the club’s first president. We are fortunate to have many members of the Davis family joining us at this year’s festival.

This week we are also very pleased to honor the work of Rachel Domber and her late husband Matthew, the founders and operators of Arbors Records by presenting to them the Jazz Club’s highest recognition – The Satchmo Award. Through their efforts since 1989 Arbors has produced well over 400 albums representing the classic styles of Jazz. The Arbors catalog reads like a Who’s Who of American Jazz of the last half century, including recordings of our own Dick Hyman and Ken Peplowski.

This week is also about celebrating the future of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. In the last year the Club has more than doubled its membership to 1,000; and has expanded its annual programming to nearly 100 performances. The future of jazz is also celebrated this week with the performance of local high school jazz bands who recently participated in our second annual High School Jazz Band Competition.

March 8-14, 2020 with the star-studded, event-filled

ARASOTA, FL: The Jazz Club of Sarasota marks its 40th anniversary on March 8-14, 2020, with the 40th Sarasota Jazz Festival, its biggest ever. Ken Peplowski—"arguably the greatest living jazz clarinetist” (BBC2)—returns for his third year as music director for the main stage concerts. He has booked The Manhattan Transfer to headline the milestone event. Other jazz stars include Dick Hyman, Clairdee, Houston Person, Charles McPherson, Russell Malone, Terell Stafford, and festival band La Lucha—Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, and John O’Leary.

The Sarasota Jazz Festival was born when Hal Davis, publicist for Benny Goodman, decided to bring live jazz to like-minded friends when he retired to Sarasota. That was in November 1980, when another young group, The Manhattan Transfer, was beginning to garner acclaim—and Grammy awards. Now the two organization are merging their talents for this landmark event.

In a significant change of venue, the festival’s main stage concerts will be presented in the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 801 North Tamiami Trail and several other concerts will be staged at several venues, each within a short walking distance of the Auditorium. In addition, several long-established festival events will be held in their traditional venues at Philippi Estate Park, Burns Court Cinema, and night clubs in downtown Sarasota.

The festival brings a mix of free and ticketed events that feature internationally acclaimed performers, local and regional musicians, young musicians aiming to be the stars of tomorrow, a pub crawl by trolley, a jazz film with mini-concert, and several other events. The schedule follows.

Jazz in the Park, started in 1988, is a popular tradition for jazz lovers of all ages.

Families with children, empty-nesters, and others of all ages can enjoy a music-filled afternoon in beautiful Phillippi Estate Park while lively music wafts through the air.

Through this event the Jazz Club continues its mission to preserve jazz by providing experience and opportunities for young musicians in a high school band, a lively combo, and a popular band. The scheduled performers are THE RIVERVIEW JAZZ ENSEMBLE, DON LEVINE ENSEMBLE and THE DEBBIE KEETON BAND.

Location: Bayfront Community Center Noon: Percussionist FRANKIE PINEIRO hosts the Sarasota-based radio program “The Afro Cuban Jazz Edition,” created in 2013 as the Viva Cal Sextet, which interprets classics of legendary vibraphonist Cal Tjader.

2:30pm: Jazz percussionist GUMBI ORTIZ & NEW GROOVE CITY specializes in exciting performances including Gumbi’s conga. He has worked and recorded with jazz guitarist Al Di Meola for decades.

CONTEMPORARY STAGE

Noon: Drummer ART SIEGEL is the leader of Panama Drive, a relatively new band playing a mix of contemporary, straight ahead and Latin music with a touch of rock and rhythm and blues. Rounding out the group is John Hetherington, keyboards; Andrew Glasgow, bass; and Aaron Siegel (Art’s son) on guitar. Art is well-known in Sarasota as one of the founders of Flightpath and The Venturas.

MISSION AND PURPOSE: The Jazz Club of Sarasota, founded in 1980, is dedicated to preserving, promoting and presenting jazz, America’s original musical art form. The Club has provided over 50 jazz-related events each year for over 38 years. Chief among them is the highly respected Sarasota Jazz Festival, presented every March. In addition to producing numerous jazz events, over the years the Club has granted over $200,000 to aspiring young jazz musicians.

2:30pm: Saxophonist JEREMY CARTER has recorded and performed with numerous national acts, produced solo albums, and made many cameo appearances. He has been with Tampa-based Bird Street Players for six years. ​

The critically acclaimed 2014 film KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON depicts the friendship of music legend and teacher Clark Terry, 89 and Justin Kauflin, a 23-­year­-old, blind piano prodigy. Kauflin, who suffers from debilitating stage fright, is invited to compete in an elite Jazz competition, just as Terry’s health takes a turn for the worse. As the clock ticks, we see two friends confront the toughest challenges of their lives.

Terry was also Quincy Jones’ first teacher, and mentor to Miles Davis.

He is among the few performers ever to have played in both Count Basie’s and Duke Ellington’s bands. In the ‘60s Terry broke the color barrier as the first African-American staff musician at NBC – on “The Tonight Show.”

Shot over the course of five years, KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON is crafted with great affection by first time filmmaker Al Hicks, who is a drummer and former student of Terry’s.

Paula DuPre’ Pesmen (behind the Academy Award winning THE COVE and the Oscar nominated CHASING ICE) produced the film with seven time Academy Award nominee Quincy Jones, who also counts Terry as his mentor.

Director Alan Hicks also includes an intimate look into the life of Quincy Jones in this film.

The film won 14 major awards and was nominated for 8 more.

Main stage PERFORMERS Dick Hyman Throughout a busy musical career that got underway in the early ‘50s, Dick Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, music director, and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in a long career involving film scores, orchestral compositions, concert appearances and well over 100 albums recorded under his own name.

In a very different vein, Mr. Hyman was one of the first to record on the Moog synthesizer, and his “Minotaur” landed on the Billboard charts.

Ken Peplowski has been the musical director for The Sarasota Jazz Festival

for three years. He is a Buffet-Crampon artist, and plays the R-13 clarinet,with a Portnoy mouthpiece and Van Doren German-cut reeds. He also plays a Yamaha tenor sax and a Berg Larsen mouthpiece. The litany of musicians Ken has collaborated with includes: Mel Torme, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Bill Charlap, Woody Allen, Marianne Faithfull, Isaac Delgado & Erich Kunzel.

the jazz scene today. Throughout his six decades of being an integral performer of the music, Charles has not merely remained true to his Be Bop origins but has expanded on them. Stanley Crouch says in his New York Times article on Charles, “he is a singular voice who has never sacrificed the fluidity of his melody making and is held in high esteem by musicians both long seasoned and young.”

Charles is a frequent guest at universities all over the world and also teaches privately. Many of his former students have gone on to have careers of their own in jazz, and have earned National Jazz Student Awards. Charles had the honor of being the subject of the Ph.D. candidate Dr. Donnie Norton’s Doctoral Dissertation: “The Jazz Saxophone Style of Charles McPherson: An Analysis through Biographical Examination and Solo Transcription.” https://www.charlesmcpherson.com/

Russell Malone was influenced by B.B. King and The Dixie Hummingbirds.

Starting in 1988, he spent two years with Jimmy Smith, then three with Harry Connick Jr. In 1995. He became the guitarist for the Diana Krall Trio, participating in three Grammy-nominated albums. Malone has toured with Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove and Dianne Reeves. He recorded his first solo album in 1992 and has led his own trio and quartet.

Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been

hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Houston Person is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and record

producer. Although he has performed in the hard bop and swing genres, he is most experienced in and best known for his work in soul jazz. He received the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982.

He first became known for a series of albums for Prestige in the 1960s. Contrary to popular belief, he was never married to the vocalist Etta Jones, but did spend many years as her musical partner, recording, performing and touring, and for much of his career this association was what he was best known for.

They first met playing in organist Johnny Hammond’s band.There are more than 75 albums recorded by Houston Person as a band leader, on Prestige.

Gumbi Ortiz Gumbi Ortiz is known around the world for his exciting conga

performance and his knowledge of rhythm and percussion. For the last 20 years Gumbi has been an integral part of superstar guitarist Al Di Meola’s band, he’s also a teacher, a session player and leader of Florida based “The Latino Projekt”. During the last 10 years, The Latino Projekt have grown from a revolving base of young musicians who’ve learned from and played with Gumbi, into a full blown band who record and perform hardcore timba and real Cuban salsa music. The band has released two successful albums, La Cura (2000) and Soy De Aqui (2005) and has toured throughout Florida and the Southeast. As the band continues to evolve and grow, so does the band’s sound. In 2011 The Latino Projekt officially became New Groove City to better reflect a more soulful direction the band has taken.

Frankie Pineiro has done radio for the past 30 years, is a band leader for

Guisando Caliente Latin Jazz Quintet, Viva Cal Sextet and Proyecto Son. Currently he hosts the Afro-Cuban Jazz Edition, a radio program that features the very best Latin Jazz from everywhere including new and recent Jazz recordings (sometime with exclusive interviews and musical selections). The best and latest Afro Cuban Jazz in the world is broadcast on this show.

Jeremy Carter is a true study of Jazz music. In Carter’s riffs, one hears his soul pouring over the speakers like sand. Carter has recorded and produced solo albums with numerous national acts. He has been working professionally for nearly two decades as a sideman and leader.

Jeremy will provide a trip down memory lane with some of the most iconic and memorable songs from the golden era of Soul.

Art Siegel, who formed Panama Drive, is a well-known drummer in the Sarasota music scene. He moved from New York to Florida at age 10, began playing drums at age 15 and was working professionally by age 17. During these early years working in clubs, he honed his skills in many styles of music. He is one of the founders of Flightpath and was a featured player with Dan Electro and the Silvertones, contributing to the band’s original music. Notable musicians he has played with include Herbie Mann, Kenny Drew Jr., John Lamb and Bob Haggart.

He was an integral member of a favorite Sarasota group, The Venturas. His son, Aaron, has inherited his musical genes, playing guitar with Panama Drive, joining John Hetherington, keyboards; Andrew Glasgow, bass.

The Jazz Club of Sarasota began as the brainstorm of Hal Davis, who retired to Sarasota in 1978 with his wife Evelyn, Hal was president of a Manhattan advertising agency and began his P.R. career in the publicity department of CBS. He handled top talent like the big bands of the era and managed Benny Goodman’s tours of Asia, Europe and the Soviet Union.

When he came to Sarasota, he saw that there was an orchestra, opera and theatre… but something was missing – JAZZ! So he and Evelyn invited people over to listen to music in their Pelican Cove apartment – and that’s how it started!

Soon the jazz fans overflowed the Davis living room, their condo meeting room and eventually a bank community room.

And The Jazz Club was born.

In 1980 the new club’s first concert was held in Holley Hall, featuring Bucky Pizzarelli, a good friend and one of the world’s best-known jazz guitarists. Bucky brought his 20-year-old son, John and they launched the new club before an audience of 280 people. Today John is a leading guitarist and vocalist in demand all over the world.

By 1981, The Club was ready for something bigger, and the first three-day festival was presented in May as the Sarasota Jazz Festival Hall of Fame Jazz Stars at Holley Hall. The Festival host was Jerry Jerome, a Sarasota resident, who played tenor saxophone with Glenn Miller, Red Norvo and Benny Goodman.

Performers were Billy Butterfield, PeeWee Erwin, Al Grey, Bob Haggart, Dick Hyman, Don Lamond, Jack Lesberg, George Masso, Red Norvo, Flip Philips, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bobby Rosengarden, Derek Smith, Buddy Tate, Warren Vache and Bob Wilber. These musicians returned to perform many times over the years.

The second Festival in 1982 was dedicated to the memory of Louis Armstrong and attended by his widow, Lucille. The third Festival in 1983 honored the memory of Eubie Blake and moved to the larger Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. By this time, membership exceeded 850 people and The Club added a newsletter and Jazz on the Water. continued 17

THE JAZZ CLUB OF SARASOTA 1980 - 2020 As President, Hal Davis led the board and guided the growth of The Club, which became one of the founding members of the American Federation of Jazz Societies. In 1984 the fourth Festival was dedicated to Benny Goodman, the fifth Festival in 1985 celebrated Milt Hinton and other side men and the sixth Festival saluted rhythm sections. In these early years the musicians stayed at The Colony, a famous Sarasota resort, which became part of the fun both musicians (and locals) enjoyed.

As The Jazz Club became an established organization, it opened an office in the Sarasota Opera House and became a founding member of the Sarasota County Arts Council. Hal Davis was the first president. Jazz Jams were added on Saturday afternoons.

The seventh Festival in 1987 brought back John Pizzarelli to perform with many long-established jazz stars. The Club created the Satchmo Award, named for Louis Armstrong, to honor a person (or persons) for significant contributions to Jazz. Frank Eliscu, Heisman trophy sculptor, designed the unique trophy.

The first one was presented to George Wein, creator of the famous Newport Jazz Festival.

Dick Hyman In 1988 22 musicians honored five jazz innovators - Armstrong, Basie, Ellington, Goodman, and Tatum by playing their music. The Club presented the first Jazz in the Park at Island Park.

The tenth Festival in 1990, a tribute to “The Amazing Dick Hyman,” presented five concerts under Hyman’s direction. New programming was added: Monthly concerts, Inside Jazz, (a lecture series), Jazz at Noon, and a program at the Boys & Girls Club.

Membership was now at 1,000.

Jerry Roucher who had worked closely with Hal, as vice president since moving to Sarasota in 1986, became president and Hal retired. Here the story takes a sad turn. Three weeks after his retirement, Hal died suddenly.

Jerry, who had run the Central Illinois Jazz Festival, was president for the next 10 years, and expanded The Club’s programming and community profile. The Festival expanded to five nights at the Van Wezel and the monthly Sunday night concerts became a staple featuring some of the biggest names in jazz.

Membership reached 2,500 people.

The number of Festival musicians expanded as well, ranging from 16 in the beginning to 100 in 1997. The scholarship program was begun to benefit students who wanted to pursue jazz as a career. Festival performers conducted school residency programs, and a local notable, John LaPorta, a Berklee College professor, conducted the Riverview High School Jazz Ensemble.

In 1998 the Jazz Caravan by Trolley was added to the Festival Week lineup and in 1999, the closing of the Van Wezel for renovation put performances at the Sarasota Opera House and in a circus tent for the Festival. The tent inspired a creative twist, featuring Dick Hyman, playing jazz on an historic calliope borrowed from the Ringling Museum’s Circus Collection.

During this decade programming expanded to Jazz at the Libraries featuring music at all the libraries in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Other programs included classes, films and lectures, featuring such notables as Jerry Wexler, founder of Atlantic Records, who produced Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and many others and was a Jazz Club member.

Although the basis for The Club’s musical offerings is Straight-Ahead Jazz, The Club has presented a range of music that includes traditional, swing, Bebop, Blues, Latin and Smooth in various settings. Performers have been Nicolas Payton, Dr. Billy Taylor, Bradford Marsalis,

In 1997 jazz went to school with the creation of Jazzlinks: Jazz Connects to History, a 5th grade curriculum combining social studies and music through an initial grant from The Venice Foundation (now the Gulf Coast Community Foundation). This project has morphed into a program for 11th grade students in collaboration with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

THE JAZZ CLUB OF SARASOTA 1980 - 2020 Jerry Roucher retired as president in 2000 and Bobby Prince took over. Leadership passed to Jack Windt, Wes Bearden, Gordon Garrett, Bill Beckman, Dave Walrath, Peg Pluto and Ed Linehan, each making a unique contribution.

In 2002, Jazz Club board member Jim Lamboy originated Jazz at Two, now one of The Club’s most popular offerings. Gordon Garrett established a connection to The Jazz Cruise, expanding members’ opportunities to hear jazz greats and benefitting The Club’s finances. Dave Walrath initiated monthly jazz at The Farmer’s Market. Among Peg Pluto’s achievements, in addition to being the first woman president of The Club, were “Jazz and Art,” in collaboration with Art Center Sarasota and added a fall Jazz Trolley. Ed Linehan created the Monday Night Cabaret and is continuing to solidify The Club’s infrastructure and infusing new ideas.

The Jazz Club of Sarasota is one of the largest and most active jazz organizations in the U.S. Its membership has more than doubled in the past year and it continues to add new events and philanthropic activities that encourage the future of jazz...the original American musical art form.

A letter from my Heart

When I began my beguine some 14 years ago as an executive board member with five of those years as president of the Jazz Club of Sarasota, little did it occur to me what a life changing journey this would be for me.

It was wonderful, fulfilling and at times exhausting, but there was the magic tempo and challenges to work with; meeting and working with the membership, our fantastic musicians, our scholarship winners and the different managers of the venues we used for the Trolley Night, Jazz on the Water and other concerts locations, and of course working with our Board of Directors. Carline Ash, our office manager, has been instrumental, not only for me but for each of you.

Throughout the experience, the delight of the great Jazz Music, and working with you has embedded the experience into my DNA forever.

And so, I say a sad goodbye. I'll be seeing you and hearing you in all the ole familiar places.....forever in my heart.

The Jazz Club of Sarasota created its most prestigious honor,The Satchmo Award, in 1987 to honor those who have made a “Unique and Enduring Contribution to the Living History of Jazz...Our Original Art Form.”

This year The Jazz Club of Sarasota is pleased to honor Rachel and Mat Domber of Arbors Records with this prestigious award. Their contributions to jazz are numerous as the following brief biography indicates.

Arbors Records was founded by Rachel and Mat Domber in 1989 to record and preserve the classic styles of jazz. It originated because of their desire to record their friend, the outstanding reedman, singer and composer, Rick Fay. Rick had been in the music business for over 40 years mostly as a performer at the Disney parks in California and Florida, but had never previously recorded.

Although Mat Domber was a lawyer with an office in New York and real estate interests in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Florida, he had been a jazz fan and record collector. He began listening to jazz at visits to Nick’s in Greenwich Village as a pre-teen and continued for almost all of his life.

Since the release of their first recording, Rick Fay’s Hot Five: Live at Lone Pine, in 1990, Arbors Records has issued almost 450 CDs, featuring such jazz artists as Ruby Braff, Dick Hyman, Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Harry Allen, Dan Barrett, Bob Haggart, Dave Frishberg, Rebecca Kilgore, Johnny Varro, Warren Vache, George Masso, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bobby Gordon, Jackie Coon, Jacob Fischer, Nicki Parrott, Ed Metz and Adrian Cunningham to name only a few.

Arbors Records was also the producer of the acclaimed March of Jazz weekend jazz parties, held in Florida the third weekend in March. The first party in 1994 celebrated Bob Haggart’s 80th birthday, the second in 1995 celebrated the 80th birthday of Flip Phillips. The 1996 party celebrated the March birthdays of Bob Haggart, Dick Hyman, Flip Phillips, Red Norvo and Bob Wilber and the 80th birthday of Joe Bushkin and in 1997 all of their birthdays were again celebrated, as well as the 85th birthday of Jerry Jerome. The parties continued until 2012 honoring many renowned jazz performers.

Arbors Records is also a sponsor of the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic, in Clearwater Beach, Florida and the The Sarasota Jazz Festival. In addition, Rachel Domber is the President of the Statesmen of Jazz, a touring ensemble group of senior musicians who performed around the world. The Statesmen have recorded 2 CDs produced by Arbors Records, featuring such legendary performers as Clark Terry, Joe Wilder, Al Grey, Buddy Tate, Benny Waters, Fiddler Williams, Jane Jarvis, Milt Hinton, and Panama Francis. All remaining funds are now going to non-profit organizations who promote the continuation of jazz.

Starting with the original dixieland recordings by various Rick Fay groups, the label now embraces traditional jazz and contemporary classic jazz and the swing styles of the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and beyond.

But regardless of style, all of the recordings have in common a love of melody, improvisation and swing.
