AboutSusan is probably best known for her immersive woodland landscapes, and has recently added cityscapes with an abstract quality to the collection.
The ‘Golden Hour Series’ & ‘City Reflection Series’ explores the journey light makes, creating a sensory experience that lifts us out of the dark.
With an economy of style, the art is big on process, using a layered technique to create highly textured & reflective artwork. Inspirations are David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Chagall, Monet and Van Gogh
Susan exhibits in London and around the UK, with an annual group show ‘ A River Runs Through It’ at the Gallery Oxo on the Southbank. Shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2016 and the Royal Arts Prize 2020.
In 2021 Susan was part of the team that created “ARRTI Gallery”. Running Gallery Space in Wandsworth for 9 months with over 22,000 visitors.

Golden Hour Series
The Golden Hour is that magical time just as the sun begins to descend and sits low on the horizon, colours become more vibrant, contrasts deepen, details appear both sharper and softer, as if the landscape is gently painted in a golden hue. It’s a time many of us cherish— often associated with holidays, the close of a long, warm day, when the air cools and we unwind, in the soft glow of evening light.
Trees & Light, the natural development of my previous work. I keep returning to the same subject. When I am immersed in nature my eyes are pulled to the movement of the light through and around the scene. Light has such a sensory quality and the challenge is how to express this in 2D.
These works are a combination of process used in ‘Forest of Light’ series with the gold and silver leaf, layered paint and abstract textures of the ‘City Reflections’ series.

Forest of Light Series
Forest of Light Series
I was inspired by the quality of light within a pine forest. The light is diffused, with overhead sunlight struggling to pierce the thick overhead foliage. Looking outward and sideways, sunlight shines beyond.
To achieve the affect, I work in layers starting with charcoal and ink to sketch, then adding acrylic to give more definition. At this point it is now possible to carefully apply the silver and gold
leaf, following the breaks of light. It takes time but at the same time satisfying, once applied it has to sealed with a varnish. Now I can have a little fun, by adding layers of oil paint and texture. I feel this adds depth and perspective.
