OUR MISSION
We drive scalable solutions to transform the lives of people with disabilities, people in poverty and people facing homelessness: solutions that contribute to righting societal imbalances.
OUR VISION
We envision a city where everyone has a roof over their head, is healthy, productive and can enjoy the social connections that create a life of purpose. We’re a nonprofit with a staff of 1,800 that provides more than $245 million in services. Our efforts are supported by various local, state and federal government entities as well as foundations, corporations and individual donors. Most importantly, our vision allows us to deliver the same quality of services to one individual or to thousands. No challenge is beyond our scope.
OUR UNIQUENESS
Our uniqueness lies in our ability to take what we learn on the ground and use it to change systems and impact policy. By delivering high quality services that address the complex circumstances of each person, we help transform lives, improve neighborhoods and boost future generations. We beat back stigma. We build communities. We create Opportunity for All.
“S:US offers all of us the opportunity to right societal injustices and to be an agent of good by helping to transform the lives of vulnerable New Yorkers.”
–Jorge R. Petit, MD, President and CEO

A message from
Jen Press Marden
Jorge R. Petit, MD
Chair, Board of Directors
President and CEO
Over the last 44 years, S:US has worked diligently to ensure Opportunity for All -- access to needed supports, services, treatment, shelters and housing for some of New York City and Long Island’s most vulnerable individuals and families. S:US is on the frontlines 24/7 giving people the skills they need to address their life challenges. Currently supporting and serving more than 37,000 New Yorkers as they transform their lives, we continue to grow and enhance our offerings each year. S:US is an integral part of the communities where we have shelters, housing, programs and services, helping to shape a city where all New Yorkers, despite their life circumstances can lead purposeful lives. Whether it be women and children who have experienced domestic violence; people who have lost their homes; people living in poverty; veterans who are challenged by homelessness, behaviorial health conditions, and unemployment; people with mental illness and addiction challenges; people with autism and other developmental disabilities; and people living with HIV/AIDS, S:US has been a partner in their journey to live their lives to the fullest potential. Our successes to date have emboldened us to do even more. And so now, we are calling on all New Yorkers—the business community, civic groups, neighborhoods where we live and work, foundations, and generous individuals to work in partnership with us through New Yorkers Standing Together, S:US’ Social Justice Campaign. Being part of S:US, and supporting our work, offers all of us the opportunity to right societal injustices and to be agents for good. New Yorkers Standing Together helps S:US fulfill its vision of a city where everyone has a roof over their head, is healthy, productive and socially engaged. New Yorkers Standing Together creates opportunity for ALL New Yorkers to live their best life. And why not? Stories that define us as New Yorkers are about New Yorkers who work together to overcome obstacles to succeed. As New Yorkers, we believe that nothing is beyond our scope if we work together. Please accept our deep gratitude to all who so generously support S:US’ vital work.

Donna Colonna DONNA COLONNA retired in February 2022 as the CEO of Services for the UnderServed (S:US), after 25 years of passionate and dedicated service. Donna spent her 50-year career working to promote self-determination for people disadvantaged by the circumstances of their lives. Donna joined S:US in 1997, by the time of her retirement, she had positioned S:US as a leading and respected human services organization. Donna spent her working years as a vocal advocate for the rights of, and services for, individuals and families with developmental disabilities, people with behavioral health challenges, and people impacted by poverty. Her life’s work was dedicated to breaking down the stigma of disability and homelessness, building community, and helping to right societal injustices. S:US always had as its guiding light, the belief that everyone, despite the circumstances of their life, deserved the opportunity to shape their destiny. To this end, S:US has partnered with the people it serves in supporting them to write the narrative of their own lives. S:US’ service philosophy has been built on the belief that safe, affordable housing provides the foundation on which a healthy and productive life can be built. Donna’s belief in the notion that we all share a common humanity recognizes that people with challenging life experiences, like anyone else, want purpose, meaning, participation, relationships, and belonging. It was her life’s work to help us all open our minds to the possibility of the gifts, strengths, and contributions of people for whom opportunity was not always available. Over the years, Donna served in industry leadership positions in statewide and NYC trade associations and on numerous government committees that have shaped policy and program implementation on behalf of people disadvantaged by poverty or disability. Donna closed out her career, having helped to make a little corner of the world a better place. 6 l DINNER FOR A BETTER NEW YORK

KRISTIN STREZNETCKY
Since 2019, Kristin Streznetcky, her partner Roberto Vega, and their 6 year old son, Robert have been living in S:US supportive housing. During this time, Kristin has made enormous progress toward reaching her goals after years of extremely challenging circumstances. At the age of 21, Kristin was introduced to heroin and fell in love with the euphoric feeling it gave her, along with allowing her to forget the lifelong agony she had experienced due to multiple childhood traumas. By 2002, at 27, Kristin was married, and had her first son, Skyler. After 8 years of thinking her life had finally straightened out for good, she unexpectedly became a widow, which made her relapse immediately. After moving back into her parent’s home with her son, Kristin’s tolerance grew so big that she began stealing from her family to support her usage. As a result, she had to relinquish custody of Skyler to her parents, and was kicked out of her family’s home. By January 2012 she was homeless, living on the streets of New York City, often sleeping in subway stations and on park benches. Near the end 2013, Kristin became involved with a harm reduction center in the Bronx, which helped her on her road to recovery, and is also where she eventually met the current love of her life, Roberto. In April 2015, the couple became pregnant and entered NYC’s shelter system in hopes of gaining stable housing as a family. They remained in the city’s shelter system for 4 years before moving into S:US supportive housing. Kristin has been drug-free since January 2014, and credits the services she’s been receiving through supportive housing as a big part of why she has been able to maintain her life goals. She is living a healthy life in S:US’ supportive housing, maintains her monthly rent, and is focused on showing her sons how to create and sustain a stable home. She is currently a senior at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, graduating this fall with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, a minor in Psychology, and a certificate in Dispute Resolution. She has received the Dean’s List recognition since starting there, and is President of John Jay’s first international law fraternity’s pre-law chapter, Phi Alpha Delta. Focused now on studying for her LSATs, she will be attending law school in NYC immediately following her college graduation. Kristin’s long-term goals are to help S:US or start her own nonprofit one day, and as a lawyer, help others who are experiencing life challenges like her own. 8 l DINNER FOR A BETTER NEW YORK

NO NEW YORKER SHOULD SLEEP HERE We have a cure for homelessness. It’s called housing. S:US addresses the challenges that prevent individuals and families from leading independent lives in safe, secure homes of their own. We offer emergency, transitional, and permanent housing for people who have lost their homes and may be facing a variety of challenges—from mental illness to histories of incarceration, unemployment or poverty, from substance use disorders to HIV/AIDS. The stability of a home, in our experience, makes recovery, employment, and health possible. Homelessness is an injustice. Housing is a right.
“I feel very lucky where I live! I can open my window at night and hear people laughing. The fact that I live somewhere where people actually talk to each other and laugh makes me feel good.” - Samuel 56 l DINNER FOR A BETTER NEW YORK
On any given night: S:US provides housing and shelter to more than 4,500 individuals. On average: S:US engages in 1,700 prevention interventions, including providing anti-eviction resources, and helps 170 individuals and families from entering the shelter system

In 2019, individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities served by S:US volunteered over 160,000 hours to their communities. Individuals spent over 5,000 hours in giving back to their communities in 2021. Volunteer opportunities were scaled down due to COVID-19 rolling openings of programs. 58 l DINNER FOR A BETTER NEW YORK
NO NEW YORKER SHOULD BE DEFINED BY LIMITATIONS We help people see their strengths. And build on them. The services we tailor for individuals with autism and other intellectual/developmental disabilities focus on helping each person live to their fullest potential: building social connections while participating in the community and deepening relationships with friends and family while living and receiving services in the community of their choice. Our community residences and day habilitation programs offer opportunities for volunteering, obtaining competitive employment, and gaining skills for independent living.
“I would like to thank S:US individuals for helping to clean our theater for every performance. Your work means that I have one less thing to worry about.” - Regina Opera House SERVICES FOR THE UNDERSERVED l 59
NO NEW YORKER SHOULD FACE CHALLENGES ALONE People can overcome the biggest obstacles, with the right supports. At S:US, we offer services to people whose mental health and substance use challenges or other life circumstances have led to homelessness or have prevented them from maintaining a stable and productive life. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and their children. For families that have survived abuse, S:US operates shelters offering safety, security, and the opportunity to heal and rebuild lives. In addition to providing housing, we offer help with public assistance, planning and achieving long-term goals, and referrals to therapy and childcare. Our comprehensive treatment and recovery supports work with people at any stage of their life. S:US’ mobile teams, community clinics, and residential treatment and crisis centers offer compassionate support in even the most difficult circumstances. “Everyone I met at S:US was there for me every step of the way, helping to guide me as I reinvented myself.” - Marina 60 l DINNER FOR A BETTER NEW YORK

NO NYC VETERAN SHOULD BE IN A BATTLE WITHOUT BACKUP We serve vets in what can be a tough fight – coming home. As one of New York City’s largest veteran services providers, S:US serves vets as they struggle to reintegrate to civilian life, coping with post-traumatic stress, depression, unemployment and homelessness. We help vets find and maintain permanent housing, connect to mental health services and offer job training, placement, and on-the-job support.
“They are here to make a better future for you… this is a new beginning. Some suffering other people just can’t hear or want to take on. But S:US did.” - Karen

NO NEW YORKER SHOULD LIVE IN A FOOD DESERT We find fertile ground in the city where new possibilities flourish. S:US has created and maintains more than 50 urban farms and gardens throughout New York City, most in neighborhoods where produce is scarce and the number of people with diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure is disproportionately high. Farms and gardens are located in the backyards and on the rooftops of our residences, shelters, and other programs. Our urban farms make it possible for individuals with disabilities to find steady employment. The farmers receive ongoing training and job coaching that build employable skills in urban agriculture, landscape maintenance, and basic carpentry. Participants also receive the healing benefits of therapeutic horticulture and can enjoy the healthy products of their labor: fresh, organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
“Every time I come here, I feel good.” - Marc
