A Look into the Future
Message from Chair This past year demonstrated what is possible when a city places its trust in its health care foundation. Together, you helped bring transformational care for our ecosystem of facilities and specialized services through milestones like the opening of Surrey Memorial Hospital's new Cardiac Catheterization Labs, while also investing in the people, technology and programs that continue to strengthen the health care ecosystem across our region. Behind every achievement is a shared commitment to ensuring every donation is stewarded responsibly and delivers meaningful impact for patients and families. As our region continues to grow and the demands on our health care system increase, philanthropy has never been more important. Public funding provides the basis of our health system, but donor support plays a vital role in enhancing our publicly funded health care system. It makes possible the technology, spaces and innovations that improve the experience of patients and families, helping our care teams deliver exceptional care.

Our Pillars of Care Our Pillars of Care represent the Foundation’s areas of focus for philanthropic investment, guiding fundraising and community support toward the greatest needs and opportunities across the health system. Each Pillar of Care represents a key area of health care investment and impact within Surrey’s ecosystem of care. Collectively, they encompass the specialized care, programs, research and services delivered across our hospitals, outpatient centres, specialized facilities, long term care homes and community programs. They help advance access, innovation, equity and exceptional health outcomes for patients and families at every stage of life, from birth through end of life, while shaping the future of health care in Surrey and the South Fraser region. Through the Pillars of Care, donors can support the areas that mean the most to them or direct their gifts toward the areas of greatest need. 9 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
Chronic Diseases & Therapy Chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses are among the most significant health challenges facing Surrey and the South Fraser region. These complex, lifelong conditions require specialized treatment, ongoing therapy and coordinated support to help patients manage their health and improve quality of life.
Mental Wellbeing Mental health and substance use challenges affect people of all ages and can have a profound impact on individuals, families and communities. Early intervention, timely access to care and ongoing support are critical to improving outcomes and helping people achieve long-term wellbeing.
Elder Care As Surrey's population continues to age, more seniors are living with complex physical, cognitive and functional challenges that impact their independence, mobility and overall wellbeing. Specialized seniors care, rehabilitation, dementia support and palliative services play a critical role in helping older adults maintain quality of life and age with dignity.
Women, Children & Youth Women, children and youth require specialized care that reflects their unique physical, emotional and developmental needs. From pregnancy and birth through childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, timely access to high-quality care helps build healthier futures for individuals, families and communities.
Specialized Care, Surgery & Outpatient Care Specialized care, surgery and outpatient services play a critical role in helping patients access advanced treatment, recover more quickly and achieve better health outcomes. From emergency care and complex surgical procedures to diagnostics, rehabilitation and pain management, these services help patients receive the right care at the right time.
Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network The Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network (SH Network), formerly Research, Innovation, Education and Training, is advancing the future of health care through research, innovation, education and clinical excellence. CHRONIC DISEASES & THERAPY
Jack’s Journey with Epilepsy Before diagnosis, living with a chronic condition can mean years of uncertainty and plenty of questions. For Jack Graham, it meant more than three decades of living with epilepsy without ever understanding why.
With a clear diagnosis, Dr. Dhaliwal carefully adjusted Jack's treatment plan, reducing complications while helping him better understand and manage his condition. More importantly, Jack found confidence instead of fear.
Jack experienced his first major seizure at age 37. Over the years, he endured frequent seizures, medication complications and the loss of many activities he loved, including driving and flying. Despite countless appointments, the underlying cause of his epilepsy remained a mystery.
Today, he continues to walk, go to the gym and play soccer, embracing the simple moments that make life meaningful.
Everything changed at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care & Surgery Centre. Using donor-funded electroencephalogram (EEG) technology alongside advanced imaging, neurologist Dr. Harinder Dhaliwal identified the cause of Jack's epilepsy: scarring on his hippocampus, likely resulting from a forceps delivery at birth. For the first time in more than 30 years, Jack finally had answers. "It was like someone finally turned the lights on," Jack says. "For the first time, I understood why this was happening. And with that understanding came peace."
11 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
“One day I’ll go into the clouds,” he says softly. “But until then, I’m going to look at the sky and the flowers and enjoy every moment. We spend so much time thinking about getting there. But it’s the story in between, that’s your life. Drink it in.” Donor support makes stories like Jack's possible. By funding advanced diagnostic equipment like EEG technology, donors are giving expert care teams the tools they need to uncover answers sooner, guide treatment with greater precision and help patients living with chronic conditions move forward with clarity, confidence and hope.
"It was like someone finally turned the lights on... For the first time, I understood why this was happening. And with that understanding came peace."

MENTAL WELLBEING
Healing Beyond Hospital Walls Healing doesn't begin and end with medical treatment. For many patients, recovery is made harder by worries that extend beyond the hospital walls: how they'll afford groceries, get to their next appointment, or care for their family while they're ill. These everyday challenges can take a profound toll on mental wellbeing, making compassionate support more important than ever.
They reduced anxiety, restored dignity and reminded patients they were not facing their journey alone. Donors like Scotiabank's investment in our Mental Wellbeing Pillar of Care is critical in supporting patients in the moments they need it most. Together with our donors, we're helping remove barriers to care and ensuring every person feels seen, supported and never alone.
Today, 28% of British Columbians describe their mental health as fair or poor. As demand for mental health services continues to grow, donor support is helping ensure patients receive care that addresses both their medical and emotional needs. Through Surrey Hospitals Foundation's Basic Necessities of Life Fund, made possible through the generous support of Scotiabank's ScotiaRISE initiative, more than 550 patients and families received practical assistance that allowed them to focus on healing. Whether it was a grocery card that ensured a family had food on the table, transportation that made it possible to attend life-saving appointments, or a car seat that allowed a newborn to return home safely, these seemingly simple supports became powerful acts of care. 13 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
“Every day I see the relief in our patients’ eyes and the tears of gratitude. In a time of rising costs, housing shortages, and growing mental health challenges, this support does more than meet urgent needs. It restores their dignity, stability, and hope.”

ELDER CARE
Transforming Respiratory Care at CareLife Fleetwood At the heart of Elder Care lies a critical mission: to empower older adults and seniors with compassionate support, dignity and independence. CareLife Fleetwood is the only long-term care facility in the Fraser Health region equipped to support older adults and seniors who require ventilator care. For residents living with complex respiratory conditions or breathing difficulties, this specialized care home provides the support and dignity that patients and their families need, close to home. Thanks to a generous donation from TB Vets Charitable Foundation, along with the support from our community of donors, the Masimo Root Patient SafetyNet System was brought to CareLife Fleetwood. Now fully installed, this advanced monitoring equipment is strengthening respiratory care across 34 long-term care beds, including 27 dedicated to patients requiring specialized mechanical ventilation. With the Masimo system in place, residents’ oxygen levels, heart rate, circulation and breathing patterns are monitored around the clock. This vital information is displayed on a central monitor, giving your care teams constant visibility into each resident’s condition without disturbing the patient.
15 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
“This monitor has been life-changing for my husband. It gives me peace of mind knowing that if his oxygen levels drop, nurses are alerted right away and can respond much faster. Being able to see what’s happening at any moment has brought us so much comfort and made an incredible difference in both of our lives.”
— Krista
With this real-time insight, staff can respond sooner and adjust care plans with greater precision when early signs of concern arise. Every gift towards Elder Care is instrumental in ensuring that our seniors can live well, independently and with dignity across our region.

WOMEN, CHILDREN & YOUTH
The Power of Music in our NICU Surrey Memorial Hospital delivers more babies than any other general hospital in the Lower Mainland, welcoming nearly 6,000 newborns as of last year. With that number expected to reach 9,000 in the years ahead, your support to the Women, Children & Youth Pillar of Care is instrumental in ensuring that our youngest patients and their families receive care that extends beyond medicine.
Our music therapist also helped bring familiar melodies into the room, allowing the family to sing in Spanish and surround their babies with love, reassurance and the familiar sounds of their culture.
Thanks to your generosity, Surrey Memorial Hospital became the first hospital in British Columbia to introduce music therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for premature babies and newborns needing specialized care.
“We are endlessly grateful that you were part of our babies’ medical journey. I felt with every note, my cortisol levels dropped, and my body felt at peace, helping me be more present with my twins.”
Today, this innovative program continues thanks to Music Heals, Adera Development Corporation, the Andrew Mahon Foundation and numerous donors. You provided 203 music therapy sessions over the past six months, reaching more than 80 newborns and their families. For families who rely on our NICU, the first days of parenthood can look very different than imagined. Luciana Alva Salazar and Joel Chipoco Sanchez experienced this when their twin sons, Alessio and Francesco, arrived much sooner than expected. Born at just 26 weeks, the twins spent their first three and a half months at our hospital. During that time, music therapy became a meaningful part of their care journey. Personalized lullabies and music carefully matched to their babies’ heart rates and breathing patterns helped support the twins’ development while giving their parents a way to comfort them during medical procedures. 17 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION

SPECIALIZED CARE, SURGERY & OUTPATIENT CARE
Everything I Needed Was Right Here In Surrey When Surrey Memorial Hospital’s donor-supported Cardiac Catheterization Labs opened last December, they brought lifesaving cardiac care closer to home for thousands of people across the South Fraser region. For Robert Milliken, that proximity changed his life. What began as an unexpected pain in his chest while climbing stairs at a football stadium at a BC Lions game soon became impossible to ignore. Over the following weeks, simple activities became increasingly difficult until he knew something wasn’t right. “I finally told myself, ‘Bob, get your butt to the emergency department,’” he recalls. Robert went to Peace Arch Hospital, expecting a routine visit. Instead, tests revealed a serious cardiac concern that required immediate attention. Within days, he was transferred to Surrey Memorial Hospital for specialized care. Not long ago, patients like Robert often had to travel outside the region for advanced cardiac procedures. Instead, he was brought directly to Surrey Memorial’s new Cardiac Cath Labs - among the first patients to receive care in the state-of-theart facility. 19 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
“Everything I needed was right here in Surrey,” he says. The cardiac team quickly identified the problem and treated it during the same procedure. What could have become a lifethreatening emergency was addressed without the need to travel to another community for care. “When your heart is failing, bridges, traffic can turn lost minutes into a catastrophe,” Robert says. Following his procedure, Robert continued his recovery through a cardiac rehabilitation program, receiving ongoing support close to home. Today, he remains grateful for the care he received to the specialized cardiac team at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and the community of donors that made this possible.

SURREY HOSPITALS HEALTH & RESEARCH NETWORK
One Foundation, One Network For years, donors have supported research, education and innovation that improves patient care. This year, we brought these efforts together through the Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network, the first foundation-led health and research network in Fraser Health. The SH Network builds on the Foundation’s longstanding investments by connecting research, education and clinical innovation across Surrey’s health care system. Over the past year, donor support advanced research and learning across Surrey’s health campuses. The inaugural Surrey Memorial Hospital Neonatal Care Conference strengthened collaboration and education for neonatal teams, while the Sherrold Haddad Excellence in Medicine Award supported research to improve care for seniors experiencing delirium. Community-led research explored the health priorities of British Columbia’s South Asian population. Knowledge Translation Challenge Grants helped improve comfort, communication and care across hospital units. Donor investment is also supporting the FLAP Study, advancing surgical innovation through new techniques for monitoring complex head and neck reconstruction.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING
Spooktacular Halloween Market
It started out as a small community Halloween market. Now, it’s grown into one of Surrey’s most anticipated family events. Created by oncology nurse Kelly Ewing, Spooktacular was inspired by a simple idea: bring families together to celebrate Halloween while giving back to the department she works in. Now in its eighth year, the event has grown from 30 vendors in a local hall to more than 100 vendors, six food trucks and thousands of attendees, raising funds to support patient care through Surrey Hospitals Foundation. Spooktacular has become a cherished community tradition. Every admission, raffle ticket and vendor helps strengthen care for patients across Surrey, combining a love of Halloween and making a meaningful difference for our ecosystem of care.
“I wanted this to be a community event. I wanted to give back to the kids, create memories for families, and support my oncology patients at the same time.”

A Look into the Future
Last year, more than 6,000 babies took their first breaths at Surrey Memorial Hospital, while its emergency teams cared for more than 182,500 patients, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in Canada. Behind every number is a person, a family and a care team. Together, they reflect the extraordinary growth of our region and the urgent need to expand access to timely, exceptional health care. Meeting that need requires us to do more than keep pace. It requires us to look ahead with bold ideas, meaningful partnerships and a shared commitment to investing in what comes next. This past year demonstrated the power of philanthropy to help accelerate that future. Because of you, patients across our region now have access to life-saving cardiac care at Surrey Memorial Hospital. You also helped launch the Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network, bringing together philanthropy, care teams, researchers, academic institutions and community partners with a shared ambition: to advance care here in Surrey and help strengthen health care across British Columbia. As Surrey grows into one of B.C.’s largest cities, its role within Fraser Health and our provincial health-care system will only become more significant. The New Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre, SFU’s School of Medicine, and other academic centres supporting health care workforce development, expanded regional programs and the Surrey Hospitals Health & Research Network represent an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen care, advance research, attract and retain leading talent, and improve outcomes for patients. Surrey Hospitals Foundation is proud to help turn these opportunities into action. As Surrey’s designated health care foundation, we support the city’s entire ecosystem of care connecting the generosity of our donors with the vision and expertise of our care teams to achieve more than any one organization could accomplish alone. None of this is possible without you. Your generosity is more than a gift. It is an investment in the belief that Surrey can help lead the future of health care in this province; that our care teams deserve the best tools, technology and opportunities; and that every person deserves access to exceptional care. Together, we are not simply preparing for the future of health care. We are helping shape it right here in Surrey. 31 | SURREY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION
