MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER
June is upon us and as we approach the third year since the tragic Champlain Towers South collapse of June 24, 2021, we pause to remember and honor the 98 lives lost on that fateful day. 98 precious souls missed daily here in Surfside and far beyond. As we reflect on this solemn occasion, let us come together to support one another. This year’s Remembrance Event will take place on 88th Street, the future site of the memorial, at the request of our Memorial Committee members. Please join us on Monday, June 24 at 10 a.m. to honor those lost and support families and survivors.
June also marks the beginning of Hurricane Season which extends through November. It’s crucial for all Surfsiders to take the necessary steps for preparedness. Please review your emergency plans, stock up on essentials and stay informed to stay safe during season.
The Town will be hosting several events earlier in the month including a Pride weekend celebration and our first Do the Dunes competition sponsored by the Tourist Board; I hope to see you there. Please read along for more details!

96th Street Park Update
A message from Mayor Burkett - In a presentation to your new commission last month, we learned the truth about the construction/renovation of our cherished park on 96th Street and Bay Drive.
It is important to note that the last group in charge of running our Town led everyone to believe that they were experts at construction and knew exactly how to get the park done quickly, and efficiently. All this while street flooding and the FPL undergrounding project, that had been promised to residents, were completely ignored until just before the election…for reasons which are now very obvious.
96th Street Park was imprudently rushed for completion to coincide with the March 2024 election.
At the May 14, 2024 commission meeting the depressing truth was revealed, that kids in Surfside would have to wait several more months before their treasured park will be finished. This happened because the political construction experts running our Town took shortcuts, which created giant problems.
According to the project’s contractors who spoke at our meeting, those shortcuts included starting work before the permitting was complete, which resulted in:
• The special, space saving elevator for the building having to be swapped for another, which instead of being self-contained, will require addition interior space in the building for its mechanical equipment - valuable space that could have been used for programming, staff or important storage.
• Already built stairways servicing the building not being wide enough to pass code requirements.
• Significant features on the building having to be redesigned.
• Huge cost overruns related to change orders.
Shortcuts weren’t the only problem.
Rather than build the park and let the experts sequence the work, Danzinger, Rose and Landsman insisted that the park be completed prior to the March 2024 election. Those three men decided that it was more important to rush the work, take shortcuts and suffer the inevitable problems that come with hasty decisions. All so they could take full credit for the new park. Now, instead of a completed park that is built as designed, we are all left with something different.
An entire building that is 5 feet in the wrong direction AND a basketball court that is now in jeopardy of not being built to regulation size.
In their haste to finish the project in an unrealistic amount of time, these three former elected officials put pressure on every contractor involved with the project to rush the job and now we find ourselves with the entire building not built where it was designed to be built according to the plans.
• Rather than complete the whole project at the same time, they divided the project into 3 phases so they could hurry up and at least put grass down, supposedly to let kids play next to a dangerous construction site and declare victory (right before the election) on only a slice of a new park! Phasing the project meant that the other phases of the project had to work around the phase getting finished first – Slowing down the entire project further!
Your new commission is cleaning up this mess. In order to get the park completed in a reasonable amount of time, we had to accept the elevator that take up extra valuable space in the building. We had to instruct the contractor to redesign the railings on the stairways so they would meet code. We had to undo the phasing to let the contractor work on the project as a whole in order to do the work more efficiently.
And lastly, we are working hard to mitigate the damage caused by the negligent misplacement of an entire building, which includes an effort to relocate the basketball court so it can remain regulation size.
Your new commission and Town administration are doing everything we can to get this project back on track and deliver the best park and facilities for our community that we possibly can.
We will keep you posted on our progress on the Town website.

HAZARDS BE GONE! HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF EVENT
From Public Works - The Town’s Public Works Department hosted another successful Hazardous Waste DropOff event on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Residents took advantage of the day to discard their used paint products, flammable aerosols & corrosive chemicals. Also collected were electronics, including computers, cellphones, stereo equipment, dead leaky batteries, chargers, as well as bio-medical waste. Hosting this collection significantly reduces the probability of toxic waste being disposed into the stormwater system.
Dumping hazardous waste with the regular trash collection poses not only a threat to staff, but it also causes major damage to the truck, and further ends up polluting the environment when dumped at the landfill.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the yearly drop-off and to NOT dispose of these items with their regular trash collection.
Thank you to all the residents that participated in our annual event. The Town of Surfside remains committed to providing services to residents that help keep our environment clean.
Remember that electronics and batteries are collected year-round at Town Hall.
See you again next year!
BE READY: SURFSIDE PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON
From Code compliance and Public Works - As June 1st marks the onset of hurricane season, the Town of Surfside urges residents to proactively prepare for potential storms. In line with this, here are essential steps to ensure safety and readiness:
Tree Trimming and Landscaping One of the essential steps in preparation is to evaluate all trees and landscaping on your property. Overgrown trees can pose a significant hazard during a storm. It’s advisable to hire a licensed arborist to assess and trim your landscape as needed. Ensure that all power lines are free from any vegetation, including tree branches and overgrown greenery. (Remember that per the Town Code, landscaping debris generated by a contractor must be removed by the contractor.)
Outdoor Items and Debris Outdoor items can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Keep outdoor items to a minimum and bring them inside when a storm is imminent. Additionally, heavy landscaping debris and bulk items should be put out for pick-up on their respective collection days, with bulk pickups occurring every Wednesday. Avoid placing mulch in your yard front as it can wash into roadways and clog the Town’s storm drain system during heavy rains. Please DO NOT wait until there is a hurricane warning or hurricane watch to put things out for pick-up as collection is not guaranteed.
Early Preparation is Key Review and update your hurricane plan now. Early preparation is critical. Plan your evacuation route and destination, and ensure your home is ready. Sign up for AlertSurfside and Town notifications to stay informed about storm events that may impact Surfside by texting SURFSIDE to 888777.
Support for At-Risk Residents At-risk seniors and residents requiring medical care or equipment, and who need transportation assistance during a mandatory evacuation, should register with the Miami-Dade County Emergency & Evacuation Assistance Program (EEAP) in advance. For assistance, call 311.
Gather Supplies Early Do not wait until a storm is threatening to complete your hurricane kit. Gather non-perishable food and emergency supplies for your household. Refill all necessary prescriptions and plan for medication that needs refrigeration in case of a power outage.
By taking these steps, we can all contribute to a resilient and prepared Surfside. Stay safe, and let’s work together to ensure our community’s safety and quick recovery during hurricane season.

SEA TURTLE NEST SIGHTINGS IN SURFSIDE
Sea turtle nesting season’s first nests are here! Multiple nests have been spotted in Surfside so far. Be on the look out for the yellow and pink County markers to help us keep all nests safe. Sea turtle nesting season in MiamiDade County runs from April 1 to Oct. 31 each year. However, nesting can occur before or after these dates. During nesting season, surveys are conducted daily to monitor, record and study all sea turtle nesting activity. If a crawl is determined to have resulted in a nest, staff mark off the area with stakes, neon tape and a nest sign to protect the nest during incubation. Around 600 nests are laid on Miami-Dade County beaches every year.
The Town follows sea turtle lighting regulations to protect our beloved marine friends. Visit townofsurfsidefl.gov to learn more about sea turtle safety guidelines.

K-9 DEMONSTRATION WOWS
The Police Department coordinated for the Parks and Recreation Teen Scene Program an exciting and educational K-9 Demonstration from the MiamiDade Schools Police Department on April 18 at the Community Center.
Starting on June 1, the Miami Dade Dispatch Center will handle dispatching non-emergency and 911 calls for service between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Town residents will not notice any changes, as calls to the same non-emergency number, 305-861-4862 , will be automatically forwarded at 8 p.m. and return to our dispatchers at 8 a.m.
The Town Hall lobby will be secured at 8 p.m. and reopen at 8 a.m. A call box installed on the West side of Town Hall will connect to the non-emergency number, answered by the Miami Dade Dispatcher for immediate assistance. This adjustment will provide faster response times and increase officer patrols, as officers will no longer need to stay inside the dispatch center during overnight hours when there are few calls and visitors.
