MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER

Scholars Prove That Surfside’s Future is in Good Hands

GAZETTE

At our June meeting, the Town Commission honored two Surfside high school students who recently graduated and will soon be enrolling in college. In addition to their impressive academic accomplishments and proud parents, I also admired their strong commitment to serving their community. Ivette Duran has given hundreds of hours of volunteer service to several organizations including Brides Against Breast Cancer, the Multiple Sclerosis Bike Ride and to our own Surfside Police Explorers, where she helped with traffic control at special events. Ivette also interned at the Surfside Police Department and volunteered at the Parks & Recreation’s Summer Camp and the Women’s Self-Defense Class. Manuel Izquierdo aspires to work in the film industry and has served as the president of the Miami Beach High Film Club, historian of the Student Government Association and a member of the Thespian Honor Society. He has also volunteered for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and has already won several film awards. Our society needs scholars, but we also need leaders. We need young people who are motivated to improve their communities and make a positive impact on the lives of others. If these two young adults are representative of the children being raised in Surfside, the future of our community looks very bright. - Guillermo Olmedillo, Town Manager

Surfside Scholars Honored at Commission Meeting

Two Surfside students who recently graduated from high school were honored with scholarship funds at the June Commission meeting. Ivette Duran, who was home schooled, will attend Florida International University to study psychology and computer science. Manuel Izquierdo, of Miami Beach High School will attend University of Central Florida and pursue visual communications.

Tubby Tabby? Obesity is a Pet Problem Too Like humans, obesity has become a health problem for our canine and feline companions. CORNER It is estimated that about 35% of dogs and cats in the U.S. are obese. This can contribute to multiple problems depending on species and breed. Obese pets have conditions such as arthritis, type 2 diabetes (cats), respiratory compromise and reduced life span (studies show thinner dogs can live an additional 2.5 years). Managing pet obesity can be challenging. Food is the most common reward for training as well as bonding between owner and pet. The first step in obesity management is to determine that the obesity is not secondary to an underlying medical condition such as thyroid disease in dogs. Once the patient is deemed healthy, veterinary medicine has many tools to help promote healthy weight loss while maintaining optimal health!

Tourists are not the only ones visiting Surfside this summer. As of June 12, there have been seven sea turtle nests confirmed in Surfside this nesting season. Remember: If you observe an adult sea turtle or hatchling sea turtle on the beach, follow these guidelines: • It is normal for sea turtles to be crawling on the beach on summer nights. DO NOT report normal crawling or nesting (digging or laying eggs) to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) unless the turtle is in a dangerous situation or has wandered off the beach. • Stay away from crawling or nesting sea turtles. Please resist the urge to approach the turtle. Nesting is a critical stage in the sea turtle’s life cycle. Please leave them undisturbed! • DO REPORT all stranded (dead or injured) turtles to the FWCC. • NEVER handle hatchling sea turtles. If you observe hatchlings wandering away from the ocean or on the beach, call: 1-888-404-FWCC or *FWC (mobile phone)
