FUN WAVES IN GUATEMALA

Somewhere around the world right now, someone is scoring the perfect wave! Maybe a perfect beach break in front of a full-service surf camp in Guatemala. El Paredón offers quality beach brakes with hollow lefts and rights in the department of Escuintla. Over recent years it has increasingly become a surfer’s reference. It currently receives hundreds of both local and foreign tourists daily looking to surf, taste a good meal, take fishing tours or swim in the mangrove.

Basically Guatemala has beach breaks and sandbars. The height of the waves vary in a range between 3-12 feet depending on the swells. October to early May is the dry season in Guatemala which offers really nice conditions for learners as the swell is calmer and more manageable. Guatemala´s culture is warm and welcoming and waiting for you to come visit!

Erik Abel

Bold colors, geometric patterns, and botanical profiles capture the eye in Erik Abel’s artwork. Inspired by his love of the ocean, surfing and travel, Abel’s work articulates the spirit of the water and awe of nature.

His roots as a California surfer intermingle with his experiences living in the Pacific Northwest as well as traveling to the South Pacific and Central America, imparting an organic, tribal style to his subjects and compositions. Upon a closer look, Abel’s graphic imagery unfolds to tell the story of his paintings. Accents peak through unexpectedly revealing the layers of color Abel cloaks in each piece while loose strokes of colored pencil create detail and dimension. Abel now lives and works in Ashland, Oregon. His original pieces have been featured in galleries across the country and abroad while his commercial work has attracted clients including Patagonia, Reef, REI and Billabong. Abel gives back to environmental and humanitarian projects through nonprofit partnerships, exhibitions, and commercial projects.

As long as I can remember, art and water have been my two favorite things. When I was one and a half years old, I created my first masterpiece; a chalk drawing of a balloon, complete with string, on my little wooden table. Maybe that’s why to this day I prefer to paint on wood, not canvas. Growing up in Ventura County, the ocean has always been my backyard playground. My Dad and uncles were always taking me fishing, exploring around the Channel Islands and hanging out at the beach. My mother put me in swimming lessons when I was an infant and I’ve had trouble staying out of the water ever since.

Most of the pivotal moments in my life seem to be marked by an interaction with the water. Most significantly, when I first discovered surfing when I was 11 while in Junior Lifeguards. This newfound passion found its way into my artwork, my class time doodles turning my notebooks into sketchpads filled with waves. To me, the ocean and making art were one in the same. An inherent expression of spirit, fun, nature, and freedom.
