Uncharted Waters

G

et comfortable working without a safety net,” he said. I was in my 20s and the way he said it, I knew it wasn’t a joke, but more of a warning. Growing up, there wasn’t really a “routine” or things I felt were predictable. Instead, chaos is what felt like normal and predictable. As I’ve moved into my later years, I’ve learned how unhealthy this is and that embracing routine and a predictable life is a blessing. It seems though that life is becoming less predictable. What was normal is no longer normal. All around us is more noise, more chaos, more change, and yet, it seems like as a result, we’re getting more numb to it all. Maybe this is our own defense mechanism because thinking and processing it all is too stressful and depressing? Or perhaps pointless because who really knows what will happen next? I really struggle with this in my life and what is the right balance? I know putting my head in the sand is not the answer (at least for me), but trying to grab all this data and assemble it like a puzzle that will reveal a picture is equally ridiculous. They say inflation is bad, so we will raise interest rates so that businesses have a harder time growing, investing and hiring. This will increase unemployment, which will reduce demand for products and services and therefore, force companies to reduce prices. Did everyone hear that correctly? The government’s plan to curb inflation is to put more people out of work so that prices come down due to reduced demand. They say this out loud ... and we say, “OK, great, prices come down.” The median price of housing has increased to $416,000 — a 26 percent increase since just three years ago. In places like California, it is over $838,000. To afford a $416,000 home, you need a household income of about $150,000 per year to even consider qualifying. Why are home prices still going up? Why is there such a shortage of homes? Have you considered that corporate institutional investors have quietly purchased around 15-20 percent of all residential properties sold in the past five years and that by one forecast, will hold more than 40 percent of all single family rentals on the market by 2030? I won’t even dive into how much pressure this places on young people wanting to get married, start a family, and pursue their “American Dream.” Or about things like politics, elections, the age of our government representatives, global conflicts, or even our own national patriotism. We are in uncharted waters. While economists attempt to use data to predict where we are going, they have about

While economists attempt to use data to predict where we are going, they have about as much credibility as weather newsmen predicting next year’s winter forecast. as much credibility as weather newsmen predicting next year’s winter forecast. What is the answer? Do we civilized, educated citizens stay quiet and polite and wait for logic and normalcy to return? Is all of this just the daily news carnage report to get ratings and in reality just under the surface, the current is actually calm? What do I tell my kids and how do I raise them to be prepared for their future??? This is the only real question, isn’t it? While I’m comfortable operating without a safety net and living in a world of “improvise, adapt, overcome,” how do I raise my kids? My daughter is getting to the age where she actually thinks and observes and listens, and now is asking thoughtful questions. Do I simply answer, “Don’t worry, it will all be OK,” or do I stress how important it is to be prepared for everything and always be aware? I rest peacefully because I know this is not our first time in uncharted waters. Yes, things are a little crazy, but also remember there have been World Wars, depressions and even Civil War. Yes, it’s easy to say, “But this is different,” which is true because everything is different until it becomes the norm. Instead, I force myself to be a presence of calm, and respect, and optimism in these uncharted waters. They can either been seen as scary, or as an adventure. We can choose to long for the “old days,” or be excited about what we can learn from what’s ahead. I choose to look for the good and to celebrate it when I find it because at the end of the day, who wants to sail the exact same course every day of their life … I hope you’ve explored some uncharted waters this year with those who mean the most to you. As always, thank you for the privilege of serving you and this great industry. Patrick Adams, President | 526 Media Group, Inc.

Cautiously Optimistic

A

fter attending several trade shows this year, I’ve heard the mumblings about the uncertain economy and issues with higher interest rates and a softening housing market. But what I noticed most clearly is the optimism that pervaded each show; there were many firsttime exhibitors and attendees at both KBIS and AWFS — this year’s two big shows in the United States, which bodes well for the industry as a whole. Other shows, including LIGNA and interzum in Germany, saw interest expend to even more countries and virtual visitors with online components offered to reach those who could not attend in person. Still others, including NeoCon and the High Point Fall Market, saw visitor and exhibitor levels return to nearpre-pandemic numbers. And while we cannot completely tune out the news from around the world and focus solely on our specialized markets, we can make the most of opportunities that present themselves and remain what I call “cautiously optimistic” about the year ahead. As we saw when the world shut down during COVID, people across the globe found solace in their home spaces, but those spaces quickly became more than just a place to live, but also a place to work, study, exercise, and entertain. And more time at

... when times are tough, people look home to help stabilize their lives. home meant more time to notice any flaws or shortcomings of their environment, so many people decided to fix or enhance their homes, leading to the renovation boom of 2020-2021. This boom backs up the idea that when times are tough, people look home to help stabilize their lives. When remote work became the new norm for many professionals, people sought to create a dedicated and ergonomic home office space that could enhance their productivity and well-being. And outside of the office areas, many people looked to create a separate, more orderly environment conducive to relaxing. While the pandemic and its shutdowns made people look to improve their home spaces in various ways, these renovators soon found that by making the best use of their now multifunctional homes, they could improve their quality of life and happiness during an uncertain period. I personally tackled some big projects in my house and yard during the pandemic and found comfort and structure in being creative and being able to bring order to at least my small portion of the world. Through several of the 2023 shows, it became obvious that the industry is full of new and creative solutions to all kinds of issues, and many companies — new and old — are debuting new products and processes all the time. Things that were considered fantasies are now becoming realities. In this final issue of the year, we have compiled many of these new products in our 2023 Surface Design Guide. This annual guide has become the industry’s go-to resource for specifiers and fabricators across the globe, showcasing the latest design trends and products that are shaping the industry — from the players themselves. And with a record number of companies and products being featured in this year’s guide, we go into 2024 with cautious optimism that the best is yet to come. Jennifer Williams, Managing Editor

Huge Growth Anticipated in Cabinets Market The cabinets market looks to grow by an estimated $2.26 billion by 2027, according to a recent report from market research company Technavio. Technavio estimates the cabinets market size will grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.73 percent between 2022 and 2027, with growth dependent on several factors, including the expanding influence of different retailing channels, the rise in the adoption of outdoor living spaces, and the increase in expenditure on luxury lifestyles among people. According to the report, increasing global interest in online and offline retail channels is playing an important role in the growth of the global cabinet market. Due to increasing Internet penetration globally, the influence of e-commerce-based shopping and online retailing has grown. Many major players have either launched their new furniture-specialist online stores or are planning to launch their new e-commerce-based outlets. Moreover, major players operating in the global cabinet market concentrated on marketing their products via a variety of channels, e.g. through apps, in an effort to penetrate other alternatives for retail sales. Thus, the growing influence of different retail channels will be the major market driver during the forecast period. Visit their website, www.technavio.com for more detailed information on this and other market analysis reports. n

[And] when these classrooms are not used for the beverage appreciation classes, they have full AV capabilities and can convert to standard lecture spaces.” Throughout the first-floor public spaces, says Taddeo, fluted wood panels are utilized to provide warmth and texture to the space, including creating a backdrop for the center’s signage, which is integrated into the double-height entry lobby and backlit to emphasize its spoon logo. “The fluted paneling carries throughout the first and second levels,” she says, “drawing the users up and into the academic floors.” Finishes within the academic portions of the project comply with Auburn’s design & construction standards, says Taddeo, “but also provide an engaging and stimulating learning environment suited to the various teaching needs.” Some examples include the glass marker boards and acoustic wall panels in the EASL (Engaged Active Student Learning) classroom where AV is a major focus. In the first floor culinary and baking labs, surfaces and materials were selected for cleanability and long-term durability — stainless steel horizontal surfaces and white subway wall tile, along with epoxy floors, and paneled cabinets were a must for these types of high-traffic spaces. Cabinets and storage feature hidden hinges and hardware, adding to the sleek look while providing easy-to-clean surfaces. In all, the surface materials and hardware chosen throughout this impressive project were thoughtfully placed with the maximum flexibility in usage in mind. The center is poised to educate future hospitality leaders, say university officials. “[The center] has already changed the landscape of Auburn,” says Hubbard, “and has the hospitality industry as a whole taking notice.” S P

dvances in technology have increasingly made it possible to replicate exact designs and materials in easier-to-use paneled products. From marble and bricks to wood and even fabric, specialty scanners, printers and processes equate to endless possibilities for applications. “We are seeing a growing interest in textured print to replicate original products,” says Erik Norman, president of swissQprint. “We want to draw awareness and visibility to [this] platform as a way for architects and interior designers to start using nontraditional materials to reproduce certain natural textures and designs for functional spaces. I think it opens up a whole world of opportunities that many of them just quite

frankly really may not think of.” Norman says that swissQprint offers capability for multiple layer printing using UV inks with exact color matching. “Our UV-LED printers are effective at producing textured prints due to their advanced printing technology and robust construction, UV-LED curing, versatile ink options, high precision, and customization capabilities. By using swissQprint UV-LED printers, companies can produce three-dimensional effects to precisely mimic original textures with uncanny detail.” In addition to replicating not only the look but also the feel of natural materials, some advantages of scanning and printing these surfaces include cost, additional properties including UV or water resistance and increased sustainability, say

experts in the field. It also allows for unprecedented customization. “A lot of what we're doing right now is our customers are actually coming to us with ideas and we'll collaborate on a particular design and ultimately it will end up getting printed,” says Peter Stasiowski, design director for Interprint. “We are not doing a whole lot of what I would call open designs where we're designing something and hoping that someone buys it… right now, pretty much everything we're developing is directly with our customers.” Printing multiple layers helps with the realism of a product, says Jonathan Wallace, president of Wallace Graphics in Atlanta. “Our core business has been wide-format printing, but in my eyes, it’s the quality of the scanner you use that really makes the difference in creating these materials. A high-quality scanner really gives details like shadows, nooks, crannies and brings realistic depth to the replicated materials.” Exact techniques vary among companies, says Wallace, but basically, a specialized 3D scanner is used to capture the color and texture of the original product, then those files are digitally

optimized. Next, a substrate material is etched with a CNC machine and textured layers are printed to simulate the original product surfaces. Finally, a high-definition photographic layer is applied to add additional color dimension and accuracy and CNC trimming completes the high-quality simulation. Using deco paper materials on substrates helps alleviate the weight of stone or wood products, says Wallace. “It really answers a lot of problems — particularly for shipping or sharing samples with customers and even aids in getting the products to market more quickly.” “Everything seems to be going this way,” he adds. “It has opened up a whole new market for our company. We already had all the other expensive equipment and just needed the specialized scanner and we hired someone who specializes in color.” Allison Jenesky, design & marketing manager for Toppan, says their KIRI Veneer has proven to be a “revolutionary replacement” for hardwood veneers. “KIRI is created by printing a high-resolution woodgrain on specialized decor paper that can be stained and CONTINUED ON PAGE 22›

finished like natural veneer,” she says. “[It] captures hardwood veneer's natural textures and performs like wood veneer on furniture, millwork, and cabinets. Using KIRI saves valuable hardwood trees, eliminates waste, and delivers AAA-grade character and color every time.”

A Pressing Matter Membrane pressing 3D Laminate (Thermofoil) is another process used to create realistic products that simulates luxe, matte, leather, wood grain, stone, marble, cement, metal, high gloss finishes, etched patterns, or other solid surfaces. The process involves pressing a membrane onto a substrate and vacuum-forming to contour surfaces, which eliminates the need for edge treatment. Angela Miterko, national sales manager with Ambtra, an import/export company that specializes in decorative surfacing materials for the commercial building and furniture markets, says adding 3DL options to Ambtra’s product line has added to the variety that customers are demanding. “A big thing I have noticed over the past few CONTINUED ON PAGE 24›

years is the quality of the existing foil suppliers has improved so much,” she says, which leads to a better end product that is more realistic and true to the original inspiration. And while solids are still quite popular, Miterko says she has seen more color options and a return to the Scandanavian linear wood pattern that is benefitted by the foil-wrapped corner process, creating a more seamless, realistic option. Having the seamless finish creates a huge advantage for materials being produced for certain applications, says David Casebier, vice-president for sales with Bierson Corporation, which manufactures for the design, architectural, hospitality and retail industries. “For places like hospitals, the lack of seams is very desirable,” he says. “Any time you have a seam on a surface, it can trap dirt and germs. It can be cleaned much easier and completely than something that has been edgebanded.” Another benefit of a 3D laminate is that it creates a stronger surface material that is more forgiving of abuse than say, highpressure laminates, depending on what the product is being used for, adds Casebier. The process of changing from one finish to another is relatively quick, he says. “We can run a high-gloss laminate and in less than five minutes, then switch it out and run a metallic or another material.” And while the 3D laminating process does create challenges (“You have to really control temperatures and humidity,” says Casebier), he expects its popularity to only increase as the technologies continue to evolve. For example, Bierson has started making felt acoustic panels using the 3DL Process that are available in a wide range of patterns and colors. “We are seeing 3D laminates replacing other finishes in commercial applications, since they offer much easier upkeep and durability,” he says. “I don’t see that waning anytime soon.” S P

Natural Wood Panels

Scan the QR code for more information.

Salt International’s Pura Vita is the complete design answer to nature’s greatest renewable resource, NATURAL WOOD. Pura Vita natural wood panels are meticulously manufactured by the best Italian producers to provide a solution and innovation into a ready to use panel that requires no additional finishing. The secret behind this revolutionary product is the way it is processed:

1 2 3 4 5

Three wood species have been chosen to represent the line: Ash, European White Oak, and Walnut. These three species offer options for light, inviting and relaxing spaces as well as warm, elegant, and sophisticated settings. Each veneer sheet is carefully blended with select cuts of either rift or quartered sliced and half-crown veneer creating a visually appealing appearance without a boring repeating pattern. The natural wood panel then undergoes a proprietary surface brushing treatment that enhances the annual growth rings giving the wood texture a unique depth that the eyes can see and the hands can feel. Pura Vita is then finished through a unique process offering stains to meet in demand trends such as warm browns and cool greys or with a natural transparent finish to show the wood as nature intended. This panel is then completed by adorning an ultra-matte hard anti-scratch lacquer which gives the natural wood an elegantly minimal pop along with a long lifespan. Pura Vita is best suited to interior vertical applications.

SAPPI

Koa's curly, wavy pattern is arguably one of the most beautiful woodgrain textures in our catalog. The unique figuring, micro-contrast, and haptic qualities make it stand out with an incredible chatoyancy that gives an almost 3D quality to the surface. The optical reflectance in the woodgrain surface is reminiscent of gemstone and mineral surfaces, making Koa an ideal texture to pair with various décor prints. A subtle micro-ticking is also integral to the surface character that makes up Koa's natural beauty. Koa is an on-trend and evergreen texture for your catalog. The surface of Koa dances with varying viewing angles and lighting schemes, making it unique for consumers looking for a high-end natural look for their cabinets, work surfaces, and other decorative laminate end uses. www.sappirelease.com

Acting “As If” BY JAMES OLSEN

S

ales is a transfer of emotion, not information. Of course, there is a transfer of information, but the crucial part of any sales transaction is how we make our customer feel. Salespeople can say brilliant things and still not get the order because they sound terrible saying them. Master Sellers sometimes say things that taken out of context can sound stupid or crazy but in the moment of the sales call they say them with such confidence that their customer believes them and feels right about making the purchase. Confidence is key. I tell my students all the time, “Your customer doesn’t know the difference between you and the best salesperson on your team unless you let them know.” This is not to say that we lie; we don’t say, “I am the number one salesperson at my company,” but we act and speak with the confidence of the Master Seller. This is called acting “As If” we are killing it even when we are on a cold streak or just starting in our career. Is there a delicate balance between confidence and arrogance? Yes, but most sellers are so concerned with sounding arrogant that they bend over backwards to not sound

52

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

so and sound timid and uncertain, transferring this emotion to their customer. It is difficult, if not impossible to give our money, time, and attention to someone who sounds “as if” they don’t believe in what they are promoting.

Prospecting Looking for new business is arguably the most challenging thing we do as salespeople. How we deal with the objections we get when trying to get someone who doesn’t know us to take us into their rotation of suppliers is daunting. “I’m happy with my current suppliers,” “I buy direct,” “Your company burned me in the past” are some of the many objections we face when prospecting. Most sellers are not ready to overcome these objections. They are not prepared and so they “wing” their responses off the top of their head and sound like it. The Master Seller, on the other hand, is ready. They know what they are going to say and thus can concentrate on how they sound — confident — and transfer this feeling to their potential customers. Does the Master Seller convert every new customer they try to sell? No, but their percentage of conversion is much higher.

“You’re Too High” This is easily the most common objection we get in sales. Most sellers sound defeated by this objection. “When we get beat, get curious” is what I tell my students. We don’t sound defeated or aggressive, but curious. Ask questions. Often customers are talking about a product that is only vaguely similar to what we are promoting. The tally, quality, shipment might not be of the same value. In up markets customers could be giving us a price they heard three weeks ago. Most sellers’ next move is to say, “Well is there anything else you are buying?” This question is fine but if, after thorough questioning we realize that our customer has made a better purchase, we ask (with confidence), “If I could get you a couple of trucks with a similar tally and the same price, would you buy a couple from me?” You will be surprised how often they say yes.

Confidence is key. I tell my students all the time, “Your customer doesn’t know the difference between you and the best salesperson on your team unless you let them know.”

Closing Most sellers don’t ask for the order. Shocking but true. The majority of sellers present products and wait for the customer to decide. Quotron: “I’ve got a truck of 2x4 14s I can get into you for $550/MBF.” Then silently wait for the customer to decide. Or even worse: Quotron: “I’ve got a truck of 2x4 14s I can get into you for $550/MBF, Whaddya think of that price?” Master Sellers, on the other hand, have convinced themselves before they make the call that what they are offering is a good/great deal and is ready to promote their deal and ask for the order, again, with confidence. Master Seller: “Susan, I’ve got a great deal on three trucks of 2x4 16s. The market is moving, they are out of a mill you love, and they get into you at $570/MBF, which is a great price in this market. Do you want to put on all three?” Sales is a transfer of emotion. Be confident

Where Did All the Workers Go? BY C L AU D IA ST. J O H N

R

ecently I was sharing a cab with a client on my way to speak at a conference. He turned to me and said that he was interested to hear what I had to say about the state of the U.S. labor market. When I asked him what specifically he was hoping to hear in my talk, he said, “Well, I’m hoping you’re going to tell us where the workers went and when they’re going to come back. When are they going to get off the sofa and back to work? We’re dying out here and people just don’t seem to want to work anymore.” If only I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this exact same question: where all the workers went and when they were going to come back. The truth: Everyone IS back to work. They’ve been back to work for a long time. The problem is, there just aren’t as many of them as there used to be. And when I explain this to people like my client, they seem surprised. And that, in turn, surprises me because these labor trends have been on the horizon for a long time. I think business owners have been ignoring the reality that there aren’t enough workers for all the jobs that are out there. In

54

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

fact, as of August 1, there were almost 4 million more jobs than there were workers available to fill them. And what’s worse is that we don’t anticipate this changing anytime soon. In fact, this has become my personal and professional mission it seems — to travel the country speaking to business leaders, making them aware of what they should already know: there simply aren’t enough workers to satisfy all of the promises companies have made to their customers, let alone to support their growth projections. And here’s why:

Eight Million Missing Workers Since the COVID 19 pandemic, we have lost approximately eight million workers from the workplace. There are a number of places those workers went: • According to Fed chairman Jerome Powell, close to 500,000 workers died from COVID. • The Brookings Institute reports that 1.6 million full-time workers have left the workforce due to long COVID.

•G oldman Sachs reports that 2.5 million older workers retired earlier than anticipated and are not returning to the workforce. •A ccording to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), there are nearly 2 million fewer women in the labor force due to childcare and familial needs, and • J P Morgan Chase reports that there are 1 million fewer legal immigrant and non-native born workers than before COVID. These 8 million workers represent approximately 5% of the overall workforce, a sizeable and noticeable number to be sure.

An Aging Workforce Let’s face it, just like you and me, the United States is getting older. According to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, the nation’s median age is pushing 40 years old, and we’re aging faster than at any other time in our history. On average, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each and every day and by 2031, the number of people age 65 and over will number an estimated 75 million, almost double what it was just 15 years ago. As these workers age and retire, the number of Generation Z and following Alpha workers are not sizeable enough to replace exiting baby boomers.

Lower Birth Rate The current U.S. birth rate is among the lowest it has ever been historically and is projected to continue to decrease over the rest of the century. We’re simply not giving birth to enough future workers to replace the workers that currently are working and will retire. Unlike their older counterparts, Millennials are putting off marriage and childbirth until later in life and are having fewer children than at any time in our history.

Decreased Immigration & Refugee Resettlement So if we’re not giving birth to enough future workers, the strategy used historically and by other industrialized nations facing a similar aging workforce and low birthrate is to increase immigration. However, the U.S. has done the opposite. Between the years of 2013 and 2018, the annual net immigration stood at just under 1 million workers per year. Since COVID, immigration has largely dried up, with only 241,000 workers joining the workforce in 2021.

Employment Projections According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2021 to 2031, the U.S. economy is projected to add 8.3 million jobs. But we’re already 8 million workers short. And this shortage is anticipated to persist for the foreseeable future. And because of this, the unemployment rate is stuck below 4.2 percent what economists say is full employment. Question FOR HR Q. Can I restrict employees from using their smartphones while working? Or when in the workplace?

‹ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 55

See what I mean? It’s kind of scary. It’s definitely something business leaders should be staying up at night thinking about. Or at least having some conversations with their best and brightest internal and external advisors discussing. Yet, I don’t see this happening. I get the sense that business owners are mistakenly believing that there is a pool of workers waiting on the sidelines for something magical to happen to convince them to rejoin the workforce. But they don’t exist. Everyone is working. This is just the new normal. If this comes as a surprise to you, you’re not alone. And it’s not too late. What’s required is simply a mindset shift. And most business leaders that we work with have all of the tools to get ahead of the game: they are investing in retention and employee engagement initiatives, they are looking for technology and outsourced/offshore labor alternatives, they are upskilling their existing workers and they are investing in soft-skill training for their managers and supervisors who are the front-line defense for employee turnover and attrition. The good news is that most of these initiatives cost little to no money to implement and to do well. And all of our clients are well-prepared for the task at hand, and of course we’re here to help them along the way. All it takes is a mindset shift. All it takes is dedication and commitment to do one and only one thing: to value employees for the valuable asset that they are. S P

A. Yes, you can restrict most cell phone or smartphone

access/usage even though the reason behind doing so may vary from situation to situation. This restriction can only be during work times so employees will usually need to be able to access and use their phones during breaks.

Employees’ phones and their usage can cause several issues. They can keep employees from properly and efficiently completing their job duties. They can distract others in the same space through the conversation or alert tones. If used for streaming music or videos, they can disrupt the environment as well as slow down internet speed. They can bring safety concerns by being a distraction or by their physical presence in some work areas. If employees do not need their phones for work purposes, you can establish clear policy that they must be kept out of sight, perhaps locked in a drawer, locker, or vehicle except when used during an approved break period. If there is an emergency situation (i.e., the employee is waiting for a call from a doctor), then allow them to have it on a limited basis with approval. If employees use their phones for work, you can limit the usage to business purposes and prohibit distractions during work time. This can also apply to remote employees. Whatever restrictions you want to impose, be sure to have a clear written policy and apply it consistently to all employees.

Hardware Meets Software TODAY’S COMMERCIAL HARDWARE MARKET IS ADOPTING NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO STAY AHEAD OF INDUSTRY TRENDS

T

BY JENNIFER WILLIAMS

he commercial hardware industry is constantly evolving to meet the changing needs and expectations of customers, as well as the challenges and opportunities posed by new technologies and industry trends. Some of today’s biggest trends in the commercial hardware industry have less to do with the actual products and more to do with the technologies that can help develop and create them — and get them where they need to be. Technology, including the growing use of digital twins, is modernizing the industry. Digital twins are digital replicas of physical items that allow manufacturers to simulate, predict, and optimize product performance in real time. Manufacturers can then test different scenarios, identify potential issues, and improve quality and efficiency in the virtual arena prior to starting the expensive production process. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also a growing part of the industry, with AI and machine learning helping manufacturers automate tasks, enhance decision making, and increase productivity.

58

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

For example, AI can help optimize inventory management, forecast demand and coordinate supply chains. AI and machine learning can also help manufacturers create personalized and customized hardware solutions for customers based on their specific preferences and needs. Speaking of technology and personalization, smart hardware is a growing segment of the commercial hardware market. Hardware that can communicate with other devices and systems via the Internet of Things (IoT) can provide various benefits for customers, including improved security, convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency. For example, smart locks can allow customers to remotely control access to their premises using their smartphones or biometrics. Smart windows can automatically adjust their opacity and temperature based on the weather and user preferences. Smart furniture can adapt to different functions and configurations using specialized hardware based on user needs.

As in many industries across the world, there is an increasing focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility in the hardware industry. Customers are becoming more aware and concerned about the environmental impact of their choices and are demanding more eco-friendly products and practices from manufacturers. Manufacturers are responding by using more recycled materials, reducing waste and emissions and adopting green certifications and standards. For example, some manufacturers are using recycled aluminum or steel for their hardware products while others are also using renewable energy sources or carbon offsets to power their operations. On the design side of things, anything goes! Finishes and styles of cabinet knobs and pulls can be sleek or ornate, in polished chrome, matte black or satin gold — the choices are limitless. As for clean styles with seamless cabinets and no visible hardware, the emphasis on functionality is key — with soft-close doors and drawers becoming expected and innovative hinges and braces taking on a quiet but pivotal role. Today’s commercial hardware industry is more varied than ever before. With new technologies to help drive and meet expectations and trends, the manufacturers who can adapt quickly will be able to gain a competitive edge in the market.

Reconciling Diverse Needs in Commercial Spaces

L

BY A M Y GATH

ife is full of continuously dueling needs and it’s only natural that the environments where we spend our time also face conflicting demands. Particularly in commercial spaces that see high traffic every day, the design requirements to support the range of activities and people can often feel at odds with one another. As professionals in the surfacing space, this is a thrilling challenge. In the unique commercial environments to which we cater, how can we best meet all the distinct and disparate needs? In addition to continuously listening to feedback and monitoring trends and technology advancements, it is critical we keep a finger on the pulse of a multitude of industries and the evolving demands each faces.

Playfulness & Durability in Education Educational settings can bring out the inner child in interior designers, challenging them to create spaces that spark a sense of play and creativity while also providing areas of focus, especially in areas for older students. Plus, education spaces require intense durability to stand up to the wear and tear that comes from countless hours of use and daily cleaning and sanitizing. By introducing surfaces like compact or fiberglass-cored

wall protection and pairing them with larger-than-life designs, whether through bright colors, whimsical surface patterns or custom designs that help education institutions inspire school spirit and show that playfulness can coexist with resiliency.

Comfort & Cleanliness in Healthcare Perhaps no setting is quite as demanding as healthcare, both in form and function. To maintain the pristine cleanliness required for these settings, some designers may feel restricted by the type of materials they can use to prevent microbial buildup and optimize cleanability. However, healthcare settings find people — both patients and their loved ones — at their most vulnerable. An overly sterile environment doesn’t provide the comfort and warmth that the humanity of these moments calls for. As surface providers, we can be more thoughtful about the array of options we provide for these environments and ensure we add warmth to highly cleanable surfaces, whether through comforting colors or soothing patterns like designs that mimic the look of familiar fabrics.

Inspiration & Concentration in Office Spaces At a time when many managers and executives are hoping to see their teams in the office more often, a piece of the return-to-office puzzle is making sure workspaces are enticing to employees. This means

not just the right equipment but also the right environment for inspiring people’s best work. For some, the right environment means a place to focus without any distractions. For others, it may mean a place that sparks their creativity or feels friendly and inviting. Providing surfaces that fit these range of needs for designers and managers requires a diligent eye on the ever-changing pressures and desires for these spaces and designs that can both inspire and encourage concentration. While conflicting needs across commercial spaces can be difficult, each presents an exciting opportunity for our industry to do what we do best — meeting unique challenges and providing optimal surfacing solutions for our customers and end users. Reintroducing Real Hardwood Surfaces and Panels-Hardwoods: ENDURING VALUE AND AN ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE CHOICE

64

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

H

BY KEITH CHRISTMAN

ardwood surfaces arguably have set the standard for beauty and utility in built settings since people started building! Real hardwoods have been used for elegant floors, wall panels, elaborate moldings, cabinets and furniture for hundreds of years and hardwood beauty has withstood the test of time. One compelling reason is that they’ve always provided a strong return on investment and value. In fact, beautiful and unique hardwood products top the National Association of Realtors Remodeling Impact Report return — with a 147 percent return on investment for hardwood floor refinishing and 118 percent for new wood floors. Other flooring materials and faux wood options are nowhere to be found in the top listings for return on investment. Their role is a temporary substitute until the real thing can be acquired. This study also highlights another benefit of real hardwoods — they can be refinished and made beautiful again enabling reuse for years to come. Refinishing floors, cabinets, and furniture reduces the amount of materials that are thrown away when styles change or a few years of wear take a toll. This ability to refinish real hardwood products including hardwood plywood panels and veneers provides an important benefit to building and furniture owners. Waste from products that cannot be refinished or refurbished has become an issue legislators and policymakers are addressing with more vigor. Many states are looking to mandate policies known as consumers right-to-repair products. Kiplinger Magazine reported on this legislative trend in July with Minnesota, New York, Colorado and California having passed or currently considering legislation. Much of this legislation applies to electronics at this point, but architects, designers and builders are thinking more about the ability to recycle and refinish building products to reduce waste, increase value and protect the environment. On that note, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently asked for comments on how the U.S. government can increase the use of building products that reduce climate change. Forest products like hardwood plywood, veneer and engineered wood floors meet this challenge from the start. Trees store carbon throughout their growing lives, but the climate benefits don’t stop there. Carbon is further sequestered when the trees are utilized to manufacture finished goods. In fact, wood products are 50 percent carbon by weight, continuing to store carbon for the life of the product.

Demand for American-grown products composed of wood promotes healthy forests, reduce wildfires, protects water resources, and supports wildlife diversity, while also producing safe and sustainable products that create economic and employment opportunities for rural, underserved communities. It’s a multiple win. When there is a steady demand for wood products, forest sector operations ensure that forests will remain as productive forests in the future, creating a long-term tool to address climate change. These benefits are recognized by the Federal Government. According to the U.S. Forest Service, "While trees grow in the forest, they store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in their trunks, branches, stems, leaves, roots and soil. “So, when trees are sustainably harvested, wood continues to store carbon in the thousands of products we use every day, from paper products to lumber to energy generation. Trees then regrow, repeating the cycle… When people use wood-based products in place of fossil fuel-intensive products — like steel, concrete, or plastic — there is a permanent benefit to our atmospheric home.” The U.S. contains 8 percent of the world's forests, and there are more trees than there were 100 years ago. According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, “Forest growth nationally has exceeded harvest since the 1940s. By 1997, forest growth exceeded harvest by 42 percent, and the volume of forest growth was 380 percent greater than it had been in 1920.” It is estimated that total forest carbon storage in the U.S., including that stored in finished goods, is 58.7 billion tons. According to EPA data, each year forests and harvested forest products capture between 600 and 700 million tons of greenhouse gas

(GHG) equivalents, offsetting roughly 12 percent of U.S. annual GHG emissions. Wood products make up 47 percent of all industrial materials in the U.S. but consume only 4 percent of the total energy to manufacture those materials. In contrast, manufacturing materials from aluminum, glass, plastic, cement, or brick can require as much as 126 times more energy than making them from wood. All of this stacks up to strong environmental performance for decorative real wood products. For example, A recent Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations for wood flooring clearly demonstrate the climate benefits of wood products compared to alternatives. These studies and those for competing materials show that by using engineered wood flooring instead of alternatives like vinyl plank faux wood floors, builders and architects can reduce total global warming potential across the full life cycle by 82 percent. And that’s something we all can get behind. S P

Growth Opportunities BY KEVIN GAMMONLEY

W

hat have been the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the wholesale distributor community in the last six months? Members of the North American Building Material Distribution Association (NBMDA) are well informed on this question having received the comprehensive NBMDA Sales Trend Report in October that NBMDA distributes to its members. The report is based on surveying distributors and is compiled by the Cleveland Research Company – an independent research firm providing market insights and business solutions to firms in the building material market. One of the key findings reflected in this report is the trend of increased supply in the market leading to stronger price competition and margin compression for distributors. Another highlight is the continued strength of the commercial sector. A third is the opening of opportunities with major manufacturers to represent their line in new territories. This report provides regional distributors with insights and observations being faced by distributors from across the Unites States and Canada. These insights are invaluable to distributors faced with daily decisions to navigate their businesses through a competitive landscape with rapidly changing dynamics and challenges. Research and industry data is powerful but equally important is for executives to extract themselves from their business and connect with their peers, competitors and trading partners to gather first-hand insights, ideas and stories regarding what others are seeing in their markets. This is exactly what the upcoming NBMDA Annual Convention brings to the distributor community. The popular event will be held November 14-16 in Colorado Springs and will unite the movers and shakers of the distribution channel. In addition to connecting with their peers to share best practices and solutions to their challenges, distributors

66

SURFACEANDPANEL.COM

attend the NBMDA Convention for the educational program specifically designed for a distributor audience. This year’s program will address such topics as marketing to a more diverse customer base, artificial intelligence case within distributorships, economic trends and forecasting for the construction & industrial markets as well as a session on the science of persuasion. The leading manufacturers and importers of interior building products designed for the woodworking and kitchen & bath markets will also be on-hand at this event to deepen their partnership with their current distributors and connect with potential new distributors for their product lines. In addition to growing their distributor sales, these suppliers will attend their event to learn more about the challenges facing their distributors allowing them to tailor their services to be a stronger partner that offers solutions beyond the product. If distributors are to be competitive, they need to continually innovate. Innovative distributors are constantly assessing the marketplace for trends that they can capitalize upon. Likewise, such distributors need to perfect their data analytics allowing them to make timely and aggressive decisions. Finally, distributors need to grow their network of industry connections as there is someone out there that has the solution or insight that can change their business. S P

2023 High Point Furniture Fall Market THE ELABORATE SHOW DID NOT DISAPPOINT IN ITS SECOND OF TWO EVENTS THIS YEAR

T

STAFF REPORTS

he High Point Furniture Market drew crowds of buyers, exhibitors and visitors to its 2023 Fall event October 14-18 in North Carolina, with organizers saying the show has essentially returned to pre-pandemic attendance and exhibitor levels. More than 75,000 interior designers, architects, and home furnishings buyers were once again wowed by the sheer size and grandeur of the market, which featured events, tours, socials, dining and entertainment and networking across more than 11 million square feet of showroom space—and of course, a wide variety of designs and products. Noticeable trends included natural wood elements, varied

textures, rattan, fur, neutral colors and black & white, along with a return to glamour with lots of metallics in fixtures and wallcoverings. Attendees noted that the industry has responded to a more relaxed, organic lifestyle, showing lots of comfortable furniture and accessories throughout the five-day show. Local news outlets reported that the semi-annual event brings in more than $6 billion of revenue for the state—more than any other event statewide. The Fall show featured 2,000 exhibitors. And following the Fall Market’s success, organizers say it’s never too early to plan for their spring show, to be held April 13-17 in downtown High Point.
