ACAARYOPADESHAM आचार्योपदे शम ् ॥ शं नो ममत्रः वरुणः, शं नो भवत्वर्ययमा, शं न इन्द्रो बह ृ स्पत ः, शं नो

ववष्णुरुरुक्रमः नमो ब्रह्मणे , नमस् े वार्यो, त्वमेव प्रत्र्यक्षं ब्रह्मामि, त्वामेव

Sham no Mitrah Varunah, sham no bhavatvaryamaa, sham na Indro Brihaspatih, Sham no Vishnururukramah, Namo Brahmane, Namaste Vaayo, Tvameva pratyaksham Brahmaasi, Tvaameva pratyaksham Brahma vadishyaami, Ritam vadishyaami, Satyam vadishyaami, Tanmaamavatu, Tadvaktaaramavatu, Avatumaam, Avatuvaktaaram. Aum, May Mitra (the sun) be propitious to us; may Varuna be propitious to us; May Aryaman (a form of the sun) be propitious to us; may Indra and Brihaspati be propitious to us; may Vishnu, of wide strides, be propitious to us. Obeisance to Brahmaa, obeisance to you, O vayu. You indeed, are perceptible Brahman. Of you, indeed, the perceptible Brahman, will I speak. I will speak of the right. I will speak of the true; may that protect me; may that protect the speaker. Let that protect me; let that protect the speaker, Aum, peace, peace, peace. वेदमनूच्र्याचार्योन्द् ेवामिनमनुशानस् ित्र्यमवदा, धमंचर, स्वाध्र्यार्यान्द्मा

प्रमदः, आचार्यायर्य वप्रर्यं धनमाहृत्र्य प्रजा ं ुम मा​ाँ व्र्यवच्छे त्िसः, ित्र्यांना प्रमादद व्र्यम ्, धमायन प्रमादद व्र्यम ्, कुशालानन प्रमादद व्र्यम ्, भत्ू र्यै न प्रमादद व्र्यम ्, स्वाध्र्यार्यप्रवचनाभ्र्याम ् न प्रमदद व्र्यम ् ॥ १ ॥

Veda-manoocyaacaaryonte-vaasinamanushaasti, Satuamvada, Dharmam cara, Svaadhyaayaanmaa pramadha, Aacaaryaaya priyam dhanamaahritya prajaatantum maa vyavacchetseeh, Satyaanna pramaditavyam, Dharmaanna pramaditavyam, Kushaalaanna pramaditavyam, Bhootyai na pramaditavyam, Svaadhyaaya-pravacanaabhyaam na pramaditavyam.

Having taught the Veda, the teacher instructs the pupil; speak the truth.

Practice virtue. Let there be no neglect of your daily reading. Having brought to the teacher the wealth that is pleasing to him, do not cut off the thread of the offspring. Let there be no neglect of truth. Let there be no neglect of prosperity. Let there be no neglect of study and teaching. दे वावप क ृ ार्यायमभाम न प्रमदद व्र्यम ् , मा द ृ े वो भव , वप द ृ े वो भव, आचार्ययदेवो भव, अत थिदे वो भव, र्यान्द्र्यनवद्र्यातन कमायणण, ातन िेवव व्र्यातन , नो इ राणण, र्यान्द्र्यस्माकगम िुचाररर ातन, ातन त्वर्योपास्र्यातन ॥ २ ॥

Deva-pitrikaaryaabhyaam na pramaditavyam, Maatri-devo bhava, Pitri-devo bhava, Aacaarya-devo bhava, Athithi-devo bhava, Yaanyanavadyaani karmaani, Taani Sevitavyaani, No itaraani, Yaanyasmaakagm sucarritaani, Taani tvayopaasyaani.

Let there be no neglect of the duties to the gods and the fathers. Treat your mother as God. Treat your father as God. Treat your teacher as God. Treat your guest as God. Whatever deeds are faultless, these are to be performed – not others. Whatever good works have been performed to us, those should be performed by you - not others. नो इ राणण, र्ये के चास्माच्छे र्यांिो ब्राह्मणाः, ष े ां त्वमर्यिनेन प्रश्वामि व्र्यम ्, श्रद्धर्या दे र्य,ं अश्रद्दर्यादे र्यम , थश्रर्या दे र्यं, दिर्या दे र्यं , मभर्या दे र्यं,िंववदा दे र्यं, अि र्यदद

े कमय ववथचनत्कत्िा वा वत्त ृ -ववथचककत्िा वा स्र्या

No itaraani, Ye ke caasmacchreyaagmso braahmanaah, Teshaam tvamyaasanena prashvasitavyam, Shraddhayaa deyam, Ashraddayaadeyam, Shriyaa deyam, hriyaa deyam, Bhiyaa deyam, Samvidaa deyam, Atha yadi te karma-vicitkitsaa vaa vrittavicikitsaa vaa syaat.

Those Brahmins who are superior to us -You should comfort them by giving those seats. Whatever is to be given should be given with faith, not without faith - according to one’s plenty, with modesty, with fear, with sympathy. र्ये त्र ब्राह्मणाः िममशयनः, र्युक् ा आर्युक् ः, अलूक्षा धमंकामाः स्र्युः, र्यिा े त्र वर रे न , िा

Ye tantra braahmanaah samarshinah, Yuktaa aayuktaah, Alookshaa dharma-kaamaah syuh, Yathaa te tatra varteran, Tathaa tatra vartethaah, Athaabhyaakhyaateshu, Ye tatra braahmanaah samrshinah, Yuktaa aayuktaah, Alookshaa dharmakaamaah syuh, Yathaa te teshu varteran, Tathaa teshu vartethaah, Esha aadeshah, Esha upadesha, Eshaa vedopanishat, Etadanushaasanam, Evamupaasitavyam, Evamucal tadupaasyam.

Now, if there arises in your mind any doubt concerning any act, or any doubt concerning conduct, you should conduct yourself in such matters as brahmins would conduct themselves - Brahmins who are competent to judge, who of their own accord are devoted to good deeds and are not urged to their performance by others, and who are not too severe, but are lovers of dharma. Now with regard to persons spoken against, you should conduct yourself in such a way as Brahmins would conduct themselves-

The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru Deva is Maheswara (Shiva), The Guru is Verily the Para-Brahman (Supreme Brahman); Salutations to that Guru. अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्र्याप् ं र्येन चराचरम ् । त्पदं दमशय ं र्येन स्मै श्रसगरु वे नमः ॥२॥ Akhanndda-Mannddala-Akaaram Vyaaptam Yena Cara-Acaram | Tat-Padam Darshitam Yena Tasmai Shrii-Gurave Namah

which Equally Shine (He being the Essence of them) like Jewel worn on the Head, Who is the Sun blossoming the Lotus of Vedanta. (Salutations to the Guru) Who is the Eternally Tranquil Consciousness, Spotless and Pure, and Beyond the Ether, Who is Beyond the Bindu, Nada and Kala; Salutations to that Guru. ज्ञानशनक् िमारूढस् त्त्वमालाववभूवष ः । भुनक् मुनक् प्रदा ा च स्मै श्रसगुरवे नमः ॥८॥ Jnyaana-Shakti-Sama-Aruuddhas-Tattva-Maalaa-Vibhuussitah | Bhukti-Mukti-Pradaataa Ca Tasmai Shrii-Gurave Namah

(Salutations to the Guru) Who is Equally Mounted on Jnana (Knowledge) and Shakti (Power), and Who is Adorned with the Garland of Tattva (Truth or Absolute Reality), Who Grants both Worldy Prosperity and Liberation; Salutations to that Guru. अनेकजन्द्मिम्प्राप् कमेन्द्धनववदादहने । आत्मञ्जानानननदानेन

Aneka-Janma-Sampraapta-Karme[a-I] ndhana-Vidaahine | AatmaN. jaana-Agni-Daanena Tasmai Shrii-Gurave Namah

(Salutations to the Guru) Who Burns away the Fuel of Karma (results of works impressed on the mind) Accumulated over Many Births, By Giving (Kindling) the Fire of Self-Knowledge; Salutations to that Guru. शोषणं भवमिन्द्धोश्च प्रापणं िारिम्पदः ।

र्यस्र्य पादोदकं िम्र्यक् स्मै श्रसगरु वे नमः ॥१०॥ Shossannam Bhava-Sindhoshca Praapannam Saara-Sampadah | Yasya Paadodakam Samyak Tasmai Shrii-Gurave Namah

(Salutations to the Guru) Who Dries Up the Ocean of Samsara (Worldly Existence) and Leads to the Essential (Spiritual) Wealth Within us, In the Same Manner as His Foot-Water (when a devotee surrenders everything while washing the Guru's Feet) removes the impressions of the Samsara from the devotee's mind and reveals the Essential (Spiritual) Wealth Within; Salutations to that Guru. न गरु ोरथधकं

(Salutations to the Guru) Neither is there any Reality Beyond the Guru, nor is there any Austerity Higher than the Guru, there is no Knowledge of Truth beyond what comes From the Guru; Salutations to that Guru. मन्द्नािः श्रसजगन्द्नािो मद्गुरुः श्रसजगद्गुरुः । मदात्मा िवयभू ात्मा

(Salutations to the Sad-Guru) Who is the Bliss of Brahman, who is the Bestower of Supreme Joy, who is the Absolute, who is the Embodiment of Knowledge, who is Beyond Duality, who is Boundless and infinite like the Sky, who is indicated by Maha Vakyas like Tat-Tvam-Asi (ThatThou-Art). Who is One without the Second, Who is Eternal, Who is Stainless and Pure, Who is Immovable, Who is the Witness of the Intelligence of All Beings, Who is Beyond the States of the Mind, Who is Free from the Three Gunas; Salutations to that Sad-Guru.

GURVASHTAKAM

गुवायष्टकम ् ॥ शरीरं िरू ु पं

िा वा कलत्रं, र्यशश्चारु थचत्रं धनं मेरु

लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे,

śarīraṃ surūpaṃ tathā vā kalatraṃ, yaśaścāru citraṃ dhanaṃ meru tulyam | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

One’s body may be handsome, wife beautiful, fame, excellent and varied, and wealth like unto Mount Meru; but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? कलत्रं धनं पुत्र पौत्राददिवं, गह ृ ो बान्द्धवाः िवयमे द्थध जा म ् ।मनश्चेन लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे,

kalatraṃ dhanaṃ putra pautrādisarvaṃ, gṛho bāndhavāḥ sarvametaddhi jātam | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

Wife, wealth, sons, grandsons, etc., all these; home, relations - the host of all these there may be; but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? षड़ङ्गाददवेदो मख ु े शास्त्रववद्र्या,कववत्वादद गद्र्यं िप ु द्र्यं करोत लननं गरु ोरतिपद्मे,

ṣaḍaṅgādivedo mukhe śāstravidyā, kavitvādi gadyaṃ supadyaṃ karoti | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

The Vedas with their six auxiliaries and knowledge of sciences may be on one’s lips; one may have the gift of poesy; and may compose good prose and poetry; but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? ववदे शेषु मान्द्र्यः स्वदे शेषु धन्द्र्यः, िदाचारवत्त ृ ेषु मत्तो न चान्द्र्यः । मनश्चेन लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे,

videśeṣu mānyaḥ svadeśeṣu dhanyaḥ, sadācāravṛtteṣu matto na cānyaḥ |manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

‘In other lands I am honored; in my country, I am fortunate; in the ways of good conduct there is none that excels me’- thus one may think, but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? क्षमामण्डले भप ू भप ू लबबृ दै ः, िदा िेवव ं र्यस्र्य पादारववन्द्दम ् ।मनश्चेन लननं गरु ोरतिपद्मे,

kṣamāmaṇḍale bhūpabhūpalabṛbdaiḥ, sadā sevitaṃ yasya pādāravindam | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

One’s feet may be adored constantly by hosts of emperors and kings of the world; but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? र्यशो मे ग ं ददक्षु दानप्र ापा ्, जगद्वस् ु िवं करे र्यत्प्रिादा ् । मनश्चेन लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे, ॥

yaśo me gataṃ dikṣu dānapratāpāt, jagadvastu sarvaṃ kare yatprasādāt | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

My fame has spread in all quarters by virtue of generosity and prowess; all the things of the world are in my hands as a reward of these virtues; but if one’s mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? न भोगे न र्योगे न वा वानजराजौ, न कन्द् ामुखे नैव ववत्तेषु थचत्तम ् ।मनश्चेन लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे,

७ ॥ na bhoge na yoge na vā vājirājau, na kantāmukhe naiva vitteṣu cittam | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

Not in enjoyment, not in concentration, not in the multitudes of horses; nor in the face of the beloved, nor in wealth does the mind dwell; but if that mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? अरण्र्ये न वा स्वस्र्य गेहे न कार्ये, न दे हे मनो व य े मे त्वनध्र्ये ।मनश्चेन लननं गुरोरतिपद्मे,

८ ॥ araṇye na vā svasya gehe na kārye, na dehe mano vartate me tvanardhye | manaścena lagnaṃ guroraghripadme, tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kiṃ tataḥ kim

Not in the forest, nor even in one’s own house, nor in what-is-to-beaccomplished, nor in the body, nor in what is invaluable does my mind dwell; but if my mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru, what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence?

गरु ोरष्टकं र्यः पठे त्परु ार्यदे ही, र्यत भप ूय त ब्रयह्मचारी च गेही ।

That virtuous person who reads this octad on the Guru, and whose mind is fixed on the sayings of the Guru- whether he be an ascetic, king, student, or householder, attains the desired goal, the state which is called Brahman.

Though pure water is ample, the fool does not know that it is good and safe to drink. तछनमे धोबबर्या रोवे धोवे, तछनमे रह

िोवे बारह मािा Chiname dhobiyaa rove dhove, Chiname rahata udaasaa, Eka raatako jor lagaave, Sove baaraha maasaa.

धोवे बारह मािा

Sacca saabbun le na moorakha, Hai santana ke paasaa, Daaga puraanaa chootatha naahee, Dhove baaraha maasaa.

Why not. You fool! Make use of the good soap which the saints (holy association) can provide? The stain is old and stubborn; you can never clean it even after washing for a whole year.

Poor washer man! He is trying day and night to loosen the noose of delusion.
