It is a great opportunity given by our college to work on a self-initiated graduation project in-house. – Albert Einstein Design is about simplifying already existing notions for better use. I believe in simplicity and feel that it always stands out in people and in their creations.

I have lived in 9 cities and 10th being my hometown you could call me a nomad. Visiting wildlife sanctuaries with my family is like a ritual. My latest interest is photography, mainly birds and landscapes.

For me, the Art of Living philosophy has become the way I live and my work reflects some of the spiritual nuances of the ideology.

I am an Ambivert (comfortable in my own skin). Belonging to a defense background, respect for armed forces and patriotism comes naturally to me. I have an intense hunger for knowledge and love sharing about newly discovered things.

About My Mentor Always believed in what Massimo Vignelli once said, “If you can design one thing, you can design everything”, Honey Panchal is an alumna of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. She completed her Master of Design (M.DES) in Visual Communication specialized in Photography Design. She also has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) specialized in Photography Design from University of Creative Arts, Farnham London. For her, design is taking inspiration from her surroundings to solve problems with simple and effective solutions. Her education in design started years before she found herself amidst some creatively engaging brains at The Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda where she finished her Bachelors of Visual Arts (BVA) specialised in Graphic Design. It was her way of looking at the most mundane things in daily lives differently that set her apart. Her education only helped her implement her ideas and bring them to life.

Honey Panchal has been working as a visual communication designer for over 10 years. She has worked on different kinds of projects and brands.

Her portfolio has a variety of projects from across the industries like FMCG, Hospitality, Medical, NGO’s etc. Her photography has helped her bridge the gap between Design and Advertising.

She has taken photo workshops at CEPT University and presently teaches in UID as an Assistant Professor in the Visual Communication department.

Her strength in visual communication lies in Branding and Packaging. Her areas of interest are Photography, Typography, Promotional Design, Filmmaking, User Interface design and Book design.

Synopsis Ikigai is a Japanese word meaning the reason for being; the thing that gets you up in the morning. The word is derived from iki meaning life and gai meaning the realisation of hopes and expectations.

Ikigai has different meanings specific to a person’s life, values and beliefs.

You can tell where you are in life and what you need to work on. It also helps in realising where you lack and what should you approach to improve the reason of being.

IKIGAI is an action, verb. To serve, to create, to delight, to nourish, to provide, to teach, to heal, to connect, to build and many more. The way to find your ikigai is to introspect and see, if you perform any of these verbs you have earned the yellow belt in ikigai. It is like a mathematical equation.

IKIGAI = time affluence + gifts + rewards, says Tim Tamashiro in a Ted X talk.

Okinawa, Japan – origin of IKIGAI, most centenarians live and it is also the birth place of Karate.

The reason I chose this subject, I believe that in such an unprecedented situation like this, when everyone is stressed and sitting at home, a solution like this will help them bring some positivity and also keep them busy.

I am not a philosopher, a psychologist, a scientist or a spiritual teacher. I am simply someone who likes to learn and share wisdom with others in the hope that it may release them from undesirable negative feelings and increase feelings of joy.

The aim of this project is to help people to step out of their monotonous life and make time for themselves, to maintain a physical, mental and social well being.

My approach is to communicate this topic and create some activities that will help in directing one’s time towards self.

Possible deliverables for this project are interaction design, board games, illustrative book or an app.

Project Brief To design an application based on selfhelp/self-care that will help people find joys in small things. The whole concept is to live in the present moment, take care of your physical and mental health.

Happiness is subjective. In the quest of happiness partial solutions don’t work, because optimal experience depends on the ability to control what happens in the consciousness - moment to moment.

Each person has to achieve it on the basis of his/her own individual effort and creativity. The app contains activities to perform based on the basic principles of living a quality happy life. It is to help the users understand their passion in the journey of life.

Aim - To create a visually appealing interface that the user enjoys interacting with.

Taking inspiration from the Japanese secret of a long life: IKIGAI Ikigai comes from two words Ikiru meaning to live and kai meaning value, summing up to the value of life.

Japanese believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole. Ikigai is about feeling your work makes a difference in people’s lives. There is no concept of retirement.

It is believed to have originated in the Okinawa Islands, one of the Ryukyu Islands in the pacific ocean, its population - 13,84,762 (2009). The island is 66 miles long, 7 miles wide and 1650 ft elevated. There are subtropical rainforests, rocky mountains, and beaches around the island. Mount Yonaha is the highest mountain in Kunigami, Okinawa. Ogimi, also known as the

village of longevity has the majority of centenarians. Everyone has a backyard vegetable garden, and their diet includes eating a lot of vegetables, shikuwasa (lime-like fruit) and moringa tea.

Blue Zones In an online article, Dan Buettner (2018, n.d) talks about the Blue zones in the world and the 9 Rules of Longevity.

Blue zones are places around the world where life expectancy is higher than the rest of the world.

• Okinawa, Japan - females over 70 are the longest-lived population in the world.

• Sardinia, Italy - highest concentration of male centenarians.

• Loma Linda, California - longest-living people in the United States.

• The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica the world’s lowest rate of middle-age mortality.

• Ikaria, Greece - the lowest rate of dementia.

With the help of medical researchers, anthropologists, demographers, and epidemiologists to search for evidencebased common denominators among all places. And found the following: 1. Move Naturally - Spend time in nature.

2. Purpose - The reason to get up in the morning.

3. Down Shift - Dealing with stress.

4. 80% Rule - ‘Hara Hachi bu’ eat till you almost feel full helps in staying active.

5. Plant Slant - Eat more green vegetables, beans, soy, tofu, and lentils.

6. Wine at 5 - drink moderately, people who drink live longer than the ones who don’t drink at all.

7. Belong - be a part of the faith-based community.

8. Loved Ones First - Spent more time with family.

An ode to longevity ‘To keep healthy, and have a long life, Eat just a little of everything with relish, Go to bed early, get up, and then go out for a walk.

We live each day with serenity and we enjoy the journey.

To keep healthy and have a long life, We get on well with all of our friends.

Spring, summer, fall, winter, We happily enjoy all the seasons.

The secret is not get distracted by how old the fingers are; From the fingers to the head and back once again.

If you keep moving with your fingers working, 100 years will come to you.’

This poem was recited by a woman from the village of Ogimi who was about to turn 100 to the authors of the book IKIGAI, (Hector Garcia & Francesc Miralles, April 2006, chapter 2, p. 32)

Flow

happens when we try to do something while our mind is on other things.

In psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s research on the experience of performing an activity and being completely into it.

He called this state ‘flow’. It can be also called pleasure, delight, creativity and being present while doing anything.

There’s no one way for finding happiness but the key is to be in the state of flow to have an optimal experience.

Activities that help us in evolving our physical, mental, emotional, sensory and social well being are conducive to flow and make the optimal experience easy to achieve. (Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, 2008, chapter 4, pp.

71-93)

To reach that level of optimal experience we need to focus on activities that help us in staying in the state of flow.

Flow is “the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.” When we are in flow, we are focused on a single task without any distractions.

Our mind is ‘in order’. The opposite

Ghibli Studio Hayao Miyazaki, the director of the animated films produced by Studio Ghibli. In nearly all his films we see humans, technology, fantasy, and nature in a state of conflict—and, in the end, coming together. In his films, forests have personalities, trees have feelings, and robots befriend birds. Considered a national treasure by the Japanese government, Miyazaki is an artist capable of becoming completely absorbed in his art. He “directs” his films by rendering on paper even the tiniest detail, achieving flow by drawing. Studio Ghibli is one of the only studios in the world where almost the entire production process is carried out using traditional techniques.

He is so passionate about the work that he spends holidays in the studio.

In 2013, he announced he was going to retire. He says he can’t stop drawing.

The day after his “retirement,” instead of going on vacation or staying at home, he went to Studio Ghibli and sat down to draw. One year later, he announced he wouldn’t make any more feature films but that he would keep on drawing until the day he died. This is the best example of no sense of retirement. Resilience Nana korobi ya oki 七転び⼋起き (Fall seven times, rise eight.)

Resilence is not just the ability to persevere, it is a practice we should cultivate to stay focused on things and not get carried away with negative emotions. Proper training for our mind, body, and emotional resilience is essential for confronting life’s ups and downs. It is in us to deal with our setbacks and rise up to move forward.

Worrying about things that are beyond our control accomplishes nothing. We should have a clear sense of what we can change and what we can’t, which in turn will allow us to resist giving in to negative emotions. Instead of worrying about the past or the future, we should appreciate things just as they are in the moment, in the now.

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese concept of appreciating the beauty of our flaws and imperfections. From the book IKIGAI, (Hector Garcia & Francesc Miralles, April 2006, chapter 9, pp. 163-173)

IKIGAI Chart In a blog that went viral, Marc Winn (14 May 2014) introduced a Venn diagram explaining ‘what is your ikigai?’ He states ‘Your ikigai lies at the center of those interconnecting circles. If you are lacking in one area, you are missing out on your life’s potential. Not only that, but you are missing out on your chance to live a long and happy life.’

10 Rules of IKIGAI Once you discover your ikigai, pursuing it and nurturing it every day will bring meaning to your life. The moment your life has this purpose, you will achieve a happy state of flow in all you do.

1. STAY ACTIVE, DON’T RETIRE - It’s important to keep doing things of value, making progress, bringing beauty and transforming the world, even after official retirement.

2. TAKE IT SLOW - Proceed in a calm and relaxed manner to get better results.

Efforts should be applied without haste.

3. FILL YOUR STOMACH TILL 80% - Hara hachi bu, less is more when it comes to eating.

4. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD FRIENDS - Having good company around helps in lightening up the mood and also motivates you to go further.

5. KEEP YOURSELF IN SHAPE - Body is

a precious gift from god, so exercise it to maintain it as long as you can.

6. SMILE - It’s free therapy, for your face and mind.

7. RECONNECT WITH NATURE Refresh yourself, as humans are a part of nature.

8. GRATITUDE, GIVE THANKS - The more you give, the more you get. Being grateful helps in being humble with oneself and others.

9. LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT - yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift thats why its called present. We waste our present by reminiscing about the past and fearing the future.

Live in the present moment ‘Ichigo Ichie’ There is no exact translation in English, there are two ways to explain it. ‘Once, a meeting’ and ‘In this moment, an opportunity’. Meaning that each meeting, everything we experience, is unique and will not be repeated again and the moment is lost forever. The four basic emotions and time Anger - this emotion is linked to our survival instincts, it helped us face danger. Our muscles become tense preparing us to be ready to defend and attack. The problem with anger is that it is rarely related to real threats in today’s time. It is usually when we feel wronged we get angry which can lead to two situations, one where we take it out on the other, where he/she also might feel threatened and attack back. The other where we repress the emotion which can lead to self harm. When we get angry it’s due to what we interpret out of a situation or someone’s actions. It keeps us in the past.

Sadness - this emotion is a sense of loss in many different ways. When this sadness lasts longer, it can lead to depression. Sadness allows us to reflect on what has happened and to come up

with a new plan to move forward in life.

Sometimes it can be translated to art, a way of self expression. This also keeps us in the past.

Fear - it is also linked to our survival instincts, it serves to warn us of threats or any potential harm. Fear makes us sweat, shake and muscle tension sometimes make us feel paralyzed. In current times we’re afraid of things that might happen but are not an immediate threat, like always fearing the future which can lead to anxiety disorder and even to panic attacks. Fear projects us in the future.

Happiness - it is subjective, it has a mysterious character, since it’s not always justified. Happiness places us within depending on its intensity from serene contentment to uncontrollable euphoria. Happiness is something we experience and something we give, it makes us feel lighthearted, optimistic, empathetic, generous and human. There

are two types - happiness with a cause, when an event or situation in life brings us joy and the other happiness without any cause which comes from within. Only happiness belongs in the present. We celebrate it by fully giving ourselves over savouring the moment.

Translating emotions into time Knowing the concept of emotional intelligence we have become aware of our feelings but are often unaware how it causes us to travel into the past or the future. A simple exercise to come back to the present, where happiness, serenity and attention are found.

Everytime you are unhappy, you can translate it by asking yourself questions - Are you angry/sad? You’re living in the past, come back/wake up! - Are you afraid? 8 lessons from Zen to live in the present moment 1. Just sit and see what happens - our spiritual short-sightedness causes us to look far away. Zen tells us to simply sit and observe and embrace the moment without any ambitions.

2. Savor this moment as if it were your last breath - live one day at a time. Lets not postpone happiness.

3. Avoid distractions - do one thing at a time, as if it were the most important thing in life.

4. Free yourself from everything that is not essential - travel light on this journey called life, try adapting minimalism 5. Be your own friend - don’t compare yourself to others, embrace yourself, there is no one like you 6. Celebrate imperfection - each flaw is an invitation to polish a diamond in you 7. Practice compassion - don’t pity anyone, they don’t need it. Have

Dukkha

Mono no aware

This buddhist or hindu concept is often translated as suffering. An accurate translation would be “that slight anxiety and dissatisfaction that all living beings constantly feel inside, because we know that change is inevitable.”

We always want to escape this feeling and then distract ourselves in order to fight it, we never want to accept it. In this process we seek temporary comfort in addictions. Be it to alcohol or drugs or virtual simulations. But also forget that this escape is temporary and that we are suppressing our dukkha instead of calming it.

This is a Japanese expression used to express the appreciation of beauty. It literally translates to “being aware of the passage of time.”

Nothing lasts forever, neither good nor bad. Accepting this fact will make it easy for us to enjoy every high in life and to have hope this too shall pass in all our lows that life presents us with.

Feeling it is not a negative experience, it is in fact true to life’s true essence. Nature also provides beautiful moments of it, like the blossoming of sakura, the golden light of a setting sun.

The history of art and literature are full of these moments and feelings of loving what we are about to lose with special intensity.

Synchronicity

The ceremony of attention

Carl Jung coined this term. It is the coincidence of two or more events that have no cause-effect relationship even though they’re connected. These things are brought together spontaneously by chance, as if they are trying to catch our attention.

Chanoyu, Japanese tea ceremony literally means the way of tea. It’s a ceremony that cultivates the five senses.

• Taste - the tea served in small cups.

A single cup’s flavour endures for a long time afterwards.

• Smell - intense fragrance is also important, it makes you alert and ready for the experience.

• Touch - Holding the hot cup in your hand and raising it to your mouth to take sips, symbolizes contact with serenity.

• Sight - the tea sets are designed aesthetically pleasing.

• Sound - Pouring of the tea and the sound in the environment can add beauty to this experience.

When we discover coincidences, we become more sensitive to and observant of them and this helps us begin to detect more. Jung also pointed out that moments of crisis and transformation are a fertile ground for synchronicities because at such times we are more attentive to signs sent by destiny or the universe.

It is a call for us to pay attention to all our five senses and to be in the present, this ceremony is an art that goes beyond just drinking tea. A few rules of etiquette to create your own tea ceremony.

• To sit in a quiet calm environment.

Maybe light some scented candles.

• Begin the ceremony by greeting ichigo ichie • During the ceremony try not to indulge in meaningless old conversations that evoke stress.

• Try discussing the experience itself, the environment, quality of the tea, the pretty tea sets and any positives you want to share from your life.

• Listening is essential so that everyon feels a part of the ceremony.

• At the end greet again with ichigo ichie Originally chanoyu was for 2 or more people, but you can do this with yourself also. While enjoying the tea give yourself the gift of time to think, take notes in a journal, or simply breathe deeply and take in the world around you with all the five senses. ΪΪ The art of listening It’s difficult to find people who truly listen. Our opinions of the person, our prejudice and preconceived notions about the subject and our thoughts about our response often are obstacles that prevent us from a good listener.

Listening is one of the senses we’ve used even before birth. A fetus can follow its mother’s heartbeat and other sounds made by her body. From the sixth month onwards it can also hear what happens outside. In a research it has shown we are sensitive to music before birth. As we grow up with inner and outer distractions we tend to undermine our ability to perceive clearly about our surroundings.

There is a direct connection between noise and our capacity for attention.

It is estimated that our productivity reduces by 66% in a lot of noise. And

that pleasant music or sound reduces stress and crime rate. People who don’t suffer from noise pollution develop extraordinary hearing abilities. For example communities that live in the jungle, monks, sages or nuns, they listen the best.

Keys to be a better listener 1. Find the right place for important conversations- the first step towards good listening is to avoid noise pollution.

2. Maintain eye contact- it is letting our interlocutor know that they matter to us and that we are present.

3. Turn off interfering thoughts- the key is not to judge, prevent our mind from wandering.

4. Ask questions without interrupting- to let them know you are paying attention and are interested.

5. Don’t give unsolicited advicesometimes all you need to do is listen

Overall experience has been great, I learnt a lot, and also realised that I myself need to do some self-help/self-care.

Changing the medium of my work was a spontenous decision which also helped me realise I should not undermine myself.

It all started with my mother giving me the book ‘Ikigai’ to read and that developed my interest in the subject.

In the beginning, my mentor had suggested to do a mobile application but I was reluctant since I believed UI is my weak point.

In all the reviews the mentors were very skeptical towards the concept and the project I was doing.

With the present situation doing the project from home, keeping in touch with my mentor through email and call.

Attending reviews on zoom wasn’t easy.

But in the end they say everything happens for the good, so did my app and I am very happy with my final outcome with all the ups and downs during the whole process.
