A message from our leadership Dear Friends, It is with the deepest expression of gratitude that I thank our organization’s countless and gracious supporters for their generosity and advocacy. For generations, our past and present supporters have been instrumental in helping to further health care at Marian Regional Medical Center. Despite the unforeseen challenges throughout the past few years, our community rallied together. The dedicated community partnerships built and meaningful gifts received, before and during the pandemic, have allowed Marian to thrive in the face of uncertainty—and for that, we are thankful.

Leadership Name Title

Sue Andersen President & CEO

I am pleased to share with the community that this year marks the 10-year anniversary of Marian Regional Medical Center’s new hospital and the 82nd year our hospital has served the residents of Santa Maria and the Central Coast. In addition to these milestone anniversaries for our organization, Marian continues to elevate heath care for our community. One example is our hospital’s recent advancement from a Level III to a Level II Trauma Center Designation. This year, Marian was again named as an “A” rated hospital by Leapfrog for patient safety and earned the prestigious Best Maternity Hospitals honor by Newsweek—a coveted award only bestowed to 161 hospitals nationwide. Additionally, this year Marian was rated among the top 5% in the nation for overall clinical outcomes and was awarded a 2022 America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award™ by Healthgrades, the leading resource connecting consumers, physicians, and health systems. As technology evolves and advances, there is no question that the health care industry is constantly evolving. It is both a great privilege and honor for community members to instill their trust in Marian to provide life-saving health care services for our region’s residents, and we are committed to serving our patients with unwavering compassion and medical expertise. As it is our hospital’s responsibility to care for the community, it is the Marian Foundation’s responsibility to raise funds for our hospital’s crucial needs to acquire the latest in advanced medical technology, new building infrastructure, and the provision of new and vital health care services. We are profoundly grateful for the incredible philanthropic support we receive each year from our loyal community. Within the pages of this publication, it is our great honor to recognize the individuals, corporations, foundations, and community partners who stand with us to deliver exceptional health care. On behalf of Marian’s health care team, and most importantly our patients, we extend our most sincere appreciation. With tremendous gratitude,

Sue Andersen President & CEO Marian Regional Medical Center

ECMO treatment at Marian offers survival to the most critically ill COVID patients

Matt and Stephanie Tracy (center and below) celebrate with Marian physicians, nurses, and personnel who helped them through their COVID-19 crisis.

In October of 2021, Santa Maria residents Matt and Stephanie Tracy both tested positive for COVID-19. Unfortunately, just as Stephanie began to improve, her husband Matt’s shortness of breath worsened. Stephanie became increasingly concerned and began monitoring Matt’s oxygen levels until he showed no signs of improvement. Stephanie followed her intuition and sought emergency medical care for Matt at Marian Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted and quickly placed on a ventilator. Although the initial hope was for Matt’s lungs to recover, that hope diminished with each passing day. Matt deteriorated to the point that he was on the verge of death. Still, his care team had one more card to play— an invaluable medical resource known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. This life-saving treatment allowed for the oxygenation of his blood from the lungs. It unloaded the work of the heart by circulating his blood, allowing his lungs to rest and recover. As Matt’s condition worsened, intensive care physicians at Marian spoke with Stephanie about the potential opportunity for Matt to be an ECMO therapy candidate. The ECMO medical technology at Marian Regional

Medical Center became a reality in 2020 due to a generous $260,252 donation from the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation to acquire this advanced medical technology. Matt is alive and well today, crediting his remarkable survival to the ECMO treatment and the dedicated care team at Marian Regional Medical Center. Matt attributes his recovery to the committed team of health care workers who didn’t give up, even as his lungs weakened past the typical point of no return. Matt was hospitalized at Marian for months, and although he doesn’t remember much of his stay at the hospital, his entire care team became invested in his survival. As a decorated Marine combat veteran, Matt takes great pride in celebrating the Marine Corps’ annual birthday on November 10. On November 10, 2021, Matt was on a ventilator— sedated, unresponsive, and

unable to celebrate a day he holds close to his heart. Stephanie shared the significance of this special day with his care team, and Matt’s nurses knew that they had to commemorate this day for Matt even though he would not remember it. Critical Care Unit nurses used dry erase markers to decorate the glass doors to Matt’s Critical Care Unit patient room, and even when he was transferred to a new patient room, his celebratory Marine Corps’ birthday decorations were recreated in his second patient room.

“I am extremely thankful to the community members who donated the funds for the hospital to secure the ECMO equipment, and I appreciate the staff here at Marian. It was a blessing that my hometown hospital offers the ECMO machine, and that the staff worked so hard to keep me alive.” Following more than two months in the hospital, successfully coming off of ECMO treatment, and having made significant physical rehabilitation progress, Matt was discharged. “After more than 63 days in the hospital fighting and recovering, Matt was finally released on New Year’s Eve,” recounts Stephanie. His farewell exit from the hospital was a celebratory milestone for Matt, Stephanie, their loved ones, and every caregiver who treated Matt during his inpatient experience. For Matt’s memorable discharge, more than 50 Marian employees lined the hallways of the hospital, both cheering and clapping for Matt as he waved goodbye from his wheelchair. “It was somewhat of a rite of passage for Matt to overcome adversity and survive a very dangerous bout

with the virus,” says Stephanie. “It was also so special for Matt’s care providers, who helped him patiently fight and survive.”

An emotional reunion In March of 2022, it was a touching reunion for former COVID-19 inpatient Matt Tracy and the many Marian Critical Care Unit clinicians and cardiologists who saved Matt’s life. While visiting the hospital to say thank you to the many people who helped Matt and Stephanie during Matt’s COVID-19 experience, the couple also visited Matt’s patient room, where he fought so hard to live. Although Matt has no memory of most of his time at Marian, he still carries the physical and emotional scars from the near-death experience. “I appreciate everything the staff at Marian did for me, as well as all our friends and family and all their prayers,” states Matt. “People I have never met from all over the country have been praying for me throughout this experience. I am grateful to be alive today.”

Remembering Sue J. Sword

Sue Sword at the unveiling event for the Sue J. Sword Heart Center at Marian Regional Medical Center in November of 2017.

When it comes to charitable giving in the Santa Maria Valley, there is no name better recognized than that of Sue J. Sword. After a life of service and dedication to her community, Sue passed away in October 2021, just shy of her 97th birthday. A local philanthropic and community leader, Sue was an integral part of Marian Regional Medical Center and the Marian Foundation for nearly 40 years, providing leadership and generous philanthropic support. Not long after settling in Santa Maria in 1945, Sue began a 52-year career working for Captain Allan and Marian Hancock at the Hancock companies. Over the years, she held positions ranging from Chief Clerk to Manager, eventually becoming President of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad in 1989. To this day, Sue holds the distinction of serving as the only female president of a short-line railroad west of the Mississippi. Sue was a devoted employee, faithful financial advisor, and dear friend to the Hancocks. Her relationship with the Hancocks also brought her closer to Marian Regional

Medical Center in many ways. She became a Founding Board Member and later an Honorary Board Member of the Marian Foundation and also served on the Marian Community Board. After becoming the Co-Trustee of the Marian Mullin Hancock Charitable Trust, Sue dedicated her life to philanthropy, both by furthering the Hancocks’ philanthropic traditions and building her own legacy of altruistic giving. She demonstrated exceptional generosity and charitable responsibility, supporting nearly every civic and nonprofit organization in the greater Santa Maria Valley. Sue provided significant support to Marian for all major capital endeavors throughout the Foundation’s history. “The hospital is close to my heart,” Sue once shared. “Marian stands for our community, and the care they provide touches everyone. It’s very fulfilling knowing that the work they do and the contributions made will further advance care and benefit the future people of Santa Maria.”

6 | Today, and every day, we are grateful for those who work together creating a healthier future for all.

An avid believer in the importance of endowments for nonprofits, Sue also established the Sue J. Sword Heart Center Endowment Fund for Marian in her estate plan, becoming a founding member of the Marian Foundation’s Legacy Society. In recognition of her immense generosity and leadership, the Marian Heart Center was renamed the Sue J. Sword Heart Center in 2017. Additionally, Sue supported the Cornerstone Campaign to build the new hospital, and in tribute to her generosity, the colonnade outside the hospital’s main entrance is named in her honor. “As we reflect on Sue Sword’s legacy, Marian gratefully acknowledges and expresses our deep appreciation of the lifetime of service Sue dedicated to our hospital and community,” says Marian President & CEO Sue Andersen. “We will forever remain grateful to Sue for her unparalleled support, allowing Marian to provide the highest level of cardiac care and technology for our community and future generations to come.”

The Santa Maria Valley community and the Marian family will greatly miss Sue Sword.

Sue Sword in 2012 unveiled a portrait of Marian Mullin Hancock in the hospital’s front lobby. This portrait is displayed at the medical center’s entrance to honor the Cornerstone Campaign’s leadership gift from the Estate of Marian Mullin Hancock.

Sue Sword included the medical center in her estate planning to establish the Sue J. Sword Heart Center Endowment Fund in honor of her trusted cardiologist, Dr. Ram Setty, shown here with Sue in front of the hospital.

Hardy Diagnostics supports advanced laboratory equipment

Hardy Diagnostics’ President Jay Hardy (right) with Chief Scientific Officer Andre Hsiung (left), and Chief Operating Officer Chris Catani (middle).

In November of 2021, local medical device manufacturer Hardy Diagnostics made a generous gift of $289,000 to Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation to support the purchase of advanced laboratory equipment. Thanks to the company’s generosity, the way microbiology is performed on the Central Coast will be transformed, ultimately providing better health care for our community. This gift marks the continuation of a great relationship between Hardy Diagnostics and Marian Regional Medical Center. “Hardy Diagnostics has maintained a positive relationship with Marian Regional Medical Center since the company’s inception in 1980. Marian was among our first customers, so we have special heartfelt gratitude for their contribution towards our company’s growth,” said Hardy Diagnostics’ President Jay Hardy. “Now, our company is in a position where we can make a significant contribution towards Marian’s laboratory expansion program for the benefit of the people of the Santa Maria Valley. This equipment will play a vital role in the rapid diagnosis of disease. It gives us immense joy knowing that we can partner with Marian in their mission to provide superior health care in our community.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to extend great thanks to Jay Hardy and the entire Hardy Diagnostics family for this meaningful gift,” states Kevin Ferguson, MD, FASCP, Marian’s Medical Director of Laboratory and Pathology Services. “Due to Hardy Diagnostics’ generosity, the Marian Laboratory will now be able to purchase highly specialized equipment not previously available on the Central Coast. The equipment will streamline the evaluation of microbiology studies, helping our laboratory scientists precisely identify microorganisms that may be causing disease in a shorter period of time. A more precise, faster identification allows clinicians at Marian Regional Medical Center to select the most appropriate antibiotics early, improving patient care and decreasing antibiotic resistance in the community.” The specialized equipment, which includes a MALDITOF and Phoenix Analyzer, will allow for the laboratory at Marian to evolve its services and advance capabilities far beyond what other community hospitals have. Health care in our community will dramatically improve by creating faster results and more targeted, effective, and definitive patient treatments.

8 | We couldn’t have done it without you.

“I am immensely grateful to Hardy Diagnostics for donating funds towards our hospital’s equipment needs which we would not be able to secure otherwise,” says Sue Andersen, Marian’s President & CEO. “Our lab will now be able to expand what we do in a way that will greatly benefit our patients and the local community.” The new equipment will also create more opportunities for Hardy Diagnostics and Marian Regional Medical Center to partner on more scientific endeavors.

“We are excited about the chance to partner with Marian’s lab more in the future and to be able to conduct clinical trials locally,” said Andre Hsiung, Chief Scientific Officer at Hardy Diagnostics. In recognition of this generous contribution, a commemorative naming for Hardy Diagnostics will be placed outside the Marian Regional Medical Center Laboratory.

Anonymous donor helps fund new 3D mammography technology

Left to right: Marian Breast Imaging staff members Carrie Campagnola, Lead Mammography Technologist, and Mammography Technologists Catalina Seda, Terri Hill, and Chelsea Souza stand with the new 3D mammography technology.

Thanks to a significant anonymous donation from a community member, Marian Regional Medical Center recently acquired new advanced diagnostic technology for the Mission Hope Breast Imaging Center— Hologic’s new 3Dimensions™ mammography system and the Brevera® Breast Biopsy System with CorLumina® Imaging Technology. 3Dimensions™ Mammography System Due to the high quality, clarity, and sharpness of the 3Dimensions™ mammography system’s images, radiologists are able to detect cancerous cells earlier and identify cancers that otherwise would not be visible. This 3D technology is proven to detect 20% to 65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D mammography alone. Furthermore, a 3D mammogram offers advantages in detecting breast cancer in people with dense breast tissue. “Our community will benefit greatly from the Mission Hope Breast Imaging Center’s new Hologic mammography technology since the technology offers several benefits over traditional mammography, including more accurate detection and earlier diagnoses,” says Casey Carlson, Marian’s Senior Director of Radiology Services. “The

new detectors produce a highly defined image, which will decrease the amount of callback studies and increase the sensitivity to detect breast cancer. It is also very efficient, taking 50% less time to complete a mammogram.” The technology also helps lessen the chance of false outcomes, reducing callbacks by up to 40%. This can reduce unnecessary biopsies or follow-up imaging for patients, in turn reducing related patient stress and anxiety. The new mammography system is ergonomically correct and offers increased patient comfort due to less time under compression. Additionally, since 3D technology is also faster and more efficient, Marian now performs up to 2,000 mammograms each month, an increase of nearly 800 patients per month. Brevera® Breast Biopsy System The Brevera® Breast Biopsy System creates a more compassionate patient experience by integrating tissue acquisition with real-time image verification. Key patient benefits for the new breast biopsy system include a shorter procedure time, a more comfortable experience, and a less invasive procedure, resulting in a smaller incision size and more positive cosmetic outcomes. Marian is extremely grateful to the generous anonymous donor whose support has allowed our medical center to acquire this impactful technology for our community.

New Outpatient Psychiatric Unit to open this summer

Community members tour Marian’s completed Outpatient Psychiatric Unit in 2021 following a commemorative blessing ceremony.

Marian Regional Medical Center’s new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit will soon be able to provide patients suffering from mental health or behavioral health crises with local, specialized care, 24 hours a day. Located adjacent to Marian, the new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit was completed in 2021, with a blessing ceremony held shortly after. Following a state survey earlier this year, the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit is expected to open in late summer of 2022. As the only facility of its kind throughout northern Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County, the new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit will provide a crucial missing element of local care for patients in acute crisis. Persons suffering from a mental health crisis often wait hours or even days in the Emergency Department until an out-ofarea inpatient behavioral health bed is available. Once open, eligible patients will instead be transferred to the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit, providing much-needed mental health care locally in our community.

says Dr. Alicia Gonzalez, Emergency Services Medical Director at Marian. “This unit provides a prompt transfer out of our Emergency Department into a therapeutic space that brings ‘humankindness’ back to the patient experience, a crucial factor in treating behavioral health issues. It also opens up much-needed beds for other patients in our already very busy Emergency Department.” The Outpatient Psychiatric Unit was supported by major gifts from local agricultural companies, business partners, and community members.

Specially trained psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and support staff will treat local voluntary and involuntary behavioral health patients in need in the new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit’s soothing environment. “The beauty of this new unit is that patients who present in the Emergency Department with mental or behavioral health crises can actually begin their treatment sooner and in an environment much more conducive to healing,”

Jon and Janeen Wesner graciously made a leadership gift to sponsor the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit’s Family and Visitor Waiting Room.

Honoring their son’s memory by supporting the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit

Randy and Kada Bouza stand in the Activity Area of Marian’s new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit, named after their late son, Bren Bouza (inset).

Randy and Kada Bouza know firsthand the devastating impact mental illness can have. In 2017, their lives were forever changed when they lost their 33-year-old son, Bren Bouza, to mental health issues. Bren is remembered by his parents and loved ones as a vibrant, athletic young man who loved his family, was successful in his tech industry profession, and was always the “go-to guy” when something needed to be repaired. Randy and Kada decided to make a meaningful gift in tribute of their beloved son to an organization supporting those in mental health crisis. When Randy learned about Marian’s new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit on the local news, he quickly reached out to the Marian Foundation to learn more. The Bouzas soon made a meaningful gift to support the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit, naming the Unit’s Activity Area in honor of their son, Bren.

Kada and Randy both believe that the new Outpatient Psychiatric Unit will provide individuals experiencing a mental health crisis with the help they urgently need at a local location. “Mental illness is often a silent disease, and I hope that the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit will make people aware that there is help locally when they need it,” says Kada. “I also hope that this resource will help patients’ families, as mental illness impacts a person’s family, too.” “We are very grateful to honor Bren by supporting the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit,” says Randy. “This new Unit will help save lives—and help those in crisis make it through. We are so thankful that Marian had the vision of creating this facility to help our community.”

Caring for our health care heroes

Marian’s Behavioral Health Interactive Screening Program leaders (left to right) Tom Steffora, LMFT, Luke Rawlings, MD, David Ketelaar, MD, Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services at Marian Regional Medical Center. Below: The three program leaders confer in a reception area.

In recent years, the mental well-being of health care workers has made national headlines as the COVID-19 pandemic placed extraordinary levels of stress on nurses, physicians, and hospital workers. In response to the national surge in mental health crises for caregivers, Marian Regional Medical Center launched a new Behavioral Health Interactive Screening Program, which allows employees to take an anonymous questionnaire that measures levels of intense emotional distress, current state of mental health, and more. After completing the questionnaire, the participant receives a personal response from program counselor Tom Steffora, LMFT. “This is an important first step in promoting mental health among a group of people who are at risk of stress, burnout, depression, and PTSD,” says David Ketelaar, MD, Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services. While the Interactive Screening Program is not a tool for diagnosis, it begins an important, often difficult conversation for at-risk employees, allowing the counselor the chance to engage with them and connect them with the appropriate services. Luke Rawlings, MD, Marian Family Medicine Residency Program Faculty member, provided critical advocacy to launch Marian’s Interactive Screening Program due to his

sister Dana’s suicide in 2018. Dana was an Emergency Department nurse at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital who was suffering in silence. “This is a local effort to respond to the known situations of health care workers who are working among us and are in distress,” states Dr. Rawlings. “We strive to reduce the stigma for people who may be suffering, and the Interactive Screening Program is a confidential way for employees to reflect on their own situation, receive a personalized response from a counselor, and seek help successfully.”

Turning grief into healing

Matt and Ashley Agnitch, along with their children Dempsey and Jagger, recently donated funds for Marian Regional Medical Center to acquire a CuddleCot™ for the hospital’s Birthing Center. This meaningful donation was made in memory of their late daughter, Greta Lynn Agnitch, who passed away in 2017.

At 14 weeks of pregnancy, Ashley Agnitch was given the devastating news that her daughter had a genetic abnormality and was not expected to survive pregnancy or delivery. Against all odds, baby Greta Lynn was born on April 12, 2017, and graced her family with five beautiful hours of life. In such situations, bereaved families suffering the loss of a baby may have precious bonding time cut short due to the body’s natural process after death. After the Agnitch family’s experience, Ashley researched possibilities to extend a family’s time together, hoping to allow other families to say goodbye at their own pace. She learned about the benefits of a CuddleCot™, a cooling bassinet designed to provide the gift of additional time to families. As a labor and delivery nurse, formerly at Marian Regional Medical Center and currently at French Hospital Medical Center, Ashley knows firsthand how to comfort

new parents, especially those who experience loss. To honor Greta’s memory, Ashley initiated a fundraiser to purchase CuddleCots for Central Coast hospitals. Thanks to her dedication, Marian Regional Medical Center’s birthing center is now equipped with a CuddleCot, a resource not previously available for bereaved parents on the Central Coast. “I wanted to give local families precious time to bond with their babies, and the CuddleCots offer both time and opportunity—the chance for families to take photos, offer a blessing, perform a baptism, and enable friends and family to meet the child,” says Ashley. “To give them time to make those beautiful memories is so important. Through this process, we have learned that grief and joy can coexist. To allow parents the time to process loss but still be able to find joy, laugh, smile, and be in the moment with their baby gives me great happiness.”

Leave a legacy with a planned gift A planned gift is one of the most significant charitable donations one can make in their lifetime. With so many different vehicles for giving, there is a right one for any situation in life.

Planned giving benefits:

Planned giving provides a donor with a platform for leaving a lasting legacy with significant meaning. Through this gift, a donor chooses what their legacy will be, how the gift is to be made, and who is trusted to carry it out.

• Donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares and realize larger tax savings than when you donate cash

What does it mean to be not-for-profit?

One hundred percent of every donation benefits the cause

While for-profit organizations distribute surplus revenue to shareholders or owners, not-for-profit organizations invest these earnings back into their organizations to further achieve their mission and goals. As a notfor-profit hospital, Marian Regional Medical Center reinvests profits back into the hospital and into our community by providing community benefits programs and charity care.

Marian Regional Medical Center covers all Foundation operating costs, which means that donor funds are never used to pay for any administrative costs. As such, 100% of your donation stays local and benefits our community by going directly to where it is needed most—patient care, programs, and services.

• Give a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime • Make a gift that pays you income for life • Give life insurance you no longer need

• Preserve your estate for your heirs and leave a legacy to Marian at the same time
