A message from Sue Andersen, President & CEO

Dear friends,

As we celebrate the start of 2025, I’d like to take the opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to Marian Regional Medical Center’s many valued community members for their ongoing support and partnership.

When witnessing the healing work that takes place at Marian, I am often reminded that service is a central theme that echoes throughout each of our Dignity Health campuses. Within our organization, service to others is our calling, and it is at the core of all that we do.

At Marian, our health care team serves patients every day, always striving to deliver the highest quality care while continuously working to secure the latest advancements in medical technology for our patients’ benefit. This commitment is exemplified by numerous accomplishments achieved by Marian’s health care team in 2024. Our Level II Trauma Center, accredited by the American College of Surgeons, continues to expand and grow. Additionally, Marian again earned an A-rating from The Leapfrog Group for exceptional patient safety outcomes.

In 2024, Marian’s Sue J. Sword Heart Center celebrated its 100th structural heart Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure. This cutting-edge, minimally invasive method of replacing the aortic valve in patients with severe aortic stenosis avoids the need for open-heart surgery and significantly reduces recovery time.

As Marian looks to the future, we are constantly investing in new programs and services to meet the community’s ongoing patient growth demands. The upcoming Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Clinic will provide comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care for future generations of OB/GYN patients. Our biplane suite will help our interventionist perform cutting-edge procedures for stroke patients and others.

None of our work could be possible without the generosity and support of a grateful community. Our greatness—and our humankindness—is truly measured by our willingness and ability to serve one another, as well as the most vulnerable among us in their time of greatest need. I’d like to thank our community’s giving donors, community partners, and patients for your ongoing and significant support.

This past summer, I was appointed full-time President and CEO of French Hospital Medical Center, in addition to continuing the same leadership role at Marian Regional Medical Center and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital. I am honored to reaffirm my ongoing commitment to serving our local communities. With all three campuses now working together under shared leadership, we have an exciting opportunity to expand and strengthen our services to further meet the needs of the communities we call home—communities that continue to grow every day.

With tremendous gratitude,

Marian Regional Medical Center

Marian named Level II Trauma Center

Marian Regional Medical Center was officially verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons. The Level II Trauma Center verification is an elevation from Marian’s previous Level III verification, and this achievement recognizes Marian’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.

“Marian is incredibly proud to have achieved verification as a Level II Trauma Center and for the ability to provide our community comprehensive trauma care and around-the-clock coverage of essential specialties, personnel, and equipment,” says Sue Andersen, President and CEO, Marian Regional Medical Center. “It is the goal of our hospital to provide the highest levels of health care for our residents, close to home, and this verification

is yet another testament to the dedication and passion of our outstanding team.”

Elements of a Level II Trauma Center:

• Twenty-four-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage by the specialties of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, and critical care.

• Provides trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff.

• Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.

• Tertiary care needs such as cardiac, hemodialysis, and microvascular surgery may be referred to a Level I Trauma Center.

At the county level, Santa Barbara considers Level I and Level II verifications to be equal when it comes to initial trauma treatment and resuscitation. The County is divided into two trauma service areas, with emergency incidents north and west of Buellton (and many of the trauma incidents in San Luis Obispo County) being transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for care. Considering the substantial size of Santa Barbara County alone, this ensures timely, expert care for those in emergent situations.

At a local level, however, having a Level II Trauma Center available to an expanding city like Santa Maria is critically important. As our population increases here and in the greater Santa Maria Valley region as a whole, the amount of traumatic injury incidents will naturally increase as well. Our Level II verification allows us to continue to meet the needs of our growing community now and in the future.

“Marian’s elevated Level II Trauma facility further advances patient care by providing specialized medical expertise for traumatic injuries when needed most. Now, Central Coast trauma patients are transported to Marian, and the team is able to mobilize quickly and respond immediately, which ensures both the highest standards and better patient outcomes.”

Marian has the only Level II Trauma Center within 100 miles—and why it matters

Marian is the only Level II Trauma Center within a 100-mile radius and, when every second counts, it makes a difference. Many won’t understand the value of a trauma center until someone they love experiences an incident and needs that extreme and immediate level of emergency care.

Being a Level II Trauma Center means that Marian Regional Medical Center is equipped with 24-hour access to trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, and all the medical experts specializing in emergency resuscitation, surgery, and intensive care.

That day in November:

Danny Stoneburner’s patient experience

Santa Maria resident Danny Stoneburner learned first-hand about Marian’s Trauma program and is thankful he lived to tell about it. On November 9, 2023, Danny was working alone on Suey Creek Road, about 15 miles east of Santa Maria, cutting wood in the backcountry that surrounds Highway 166.

Danny parked his truck on a hill, and suddenly as he was exiting the vehicle, the truck jerked into neutral and started to roll downhill. Acting on instinct, Danny clung to the steering wheel, doing what he could to prevent himself from getting caught under the truck that weighed several tons.

Then, the unimaginable happened as the truck careened over a ditch and Danny lost his grip, falling under the truck with a front tire rolling over his chest and part of his body was caught under the weight of the vehicle. He garnered the strength to free himself and get out from under his truck.

Danny then fought for his life, driving 15 miles to Marian Regional Medical Center. The Santa Maria native spent nearly a month at Marian, where the emergency department and trauma staff, and the only extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program in the region likely saved his life. Danny was on the ECMO machine for five days, oxygenating his blood for him while his lungs could not.

“We are a Level II Trauma Center, and that means we are equipped to care for the most severely injured patients,” Dr. Lars Ola Sjoholm says. “We have everything in place to do that, but not every Level II Trauma Center has an ECMO program—not even every Level I Trauma Center has an ECMO program. I think it’s pretty unique for a hospital to have this capacity. It does save lives, and we’re very proud of it.”

Marian earns “A” hospital safety rating from LeapFrog

Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria was recently recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog. Marian is one of only 93 hospitals in California to achieve an “A” grade.

“Receiving an ‘A’ from the Leapfrog Group is a noteworthy achievement, but it’s not the finish line,” says Sue Andersen, President and CEO, Marian Regional Medical Center. “It’s a powerful motivator for our team to continue our journey of continuous improvement in patient safety. We remain committed to implementing the latest safety protocols and innovations, ensuring that Marian Regional Medical Center continues to be a leader in providing safe and effective care for our community.”

Leapfrog assigns grades A-F to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Marian Regional Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Marian, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

Marian celebrates 100th TAVR procedure

In 2023, Marian Regional Medical Center began offering patients the innovative cardiac procedure known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). The first TAVR procedure at Marian was performed jointly by our hospital’s interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and cardiologists. The procedure involves replacing an aortic valve that is not opening properly to better allow the heart to pump blood to the body. Prior to the FDA’s approval of TAVR, the only way to do this was through open heart surgery, and patients with narrowed aortic valves who did not wish to undergo surgery or were considered to be high risk for surgery had limited options.

Traditional open-heart surgeries in the past involved cutting open the chest. TAVR offers a minimally invasive surgical option that avoids opening the chest cavity by using a catheter to deliver a collapsible replacement valve to the site of the narrowed valve through an incision of approximately a quarter-inch in the groin. Once the new valve is

expanded, it pushes the old valve leaflets aside and takes over regulating blood flow.

Monge, RN, MSN, MBA

“Reaching the milestone of our 100th TAVR procedure at Marian Regional Medical Center is a moment of great pride and gratitude,” states Candice Monge, RN, MSN, MBA, Chief Nurse Executive. “This achievement is a testament to the dedication, skill, and compassion of our talented clinical team and cardiovascular specialists who make these lifechanging procedures possible. We are also deeply grateful for the lasting legacy of Sue Swords’ planned gift, which will continue to support and enhance our program for years to come, positively impacting our patients and community for generations.”

Sue J. Sword’s legacy of giving continues

Sue J. Sword, an honorary and founding member of the Marian Foundation Board of Directors, made a transformational gift in support of the programs and services offered at the hospital’s Heart Center, which was renamed and dedicated as the Sue J. Sword Heart Center. Sue’s planned gift enabled the hospital to strengthen the programs and services offered at the Heart Center.

Following Sue’s passing, the Marian Foundation received a $3.4 million planned gift for the Heart Center to establish the Sue J. Sword Heart Center Endowment Fund.

Marian is blessed to honor Sue, a well-known philanthropist from the Santa Maria Valley, for her longstanding support and dedication to the community in furthering Marian’s healing mission.

Marian receives transformational support

The Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation is grateful for two transformational anonymous donations totaling $2 million. Both significant gifts are in support of the hospital’s Advanced Technology and Innovation Fund to secure state-ofthe-art medical equipment for the hospital.

Thanks to this transformative support, Marian has enhanced its service offerings by purchasing cutting-edge medical equipment. This new technology will elevate care in the hospital’s heart center, surgical services, nursing departments, neonatal intensive care unit, breast surgery program, and Mission Hope Cancer Center.

According to Jessa Brooks, Vice President of

Philanthropy, this donation reflects the strong support the hospital receives from the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding communities. “We are exceptionally grateful for the transformational and anonymous support for the Foundation’s Advanced Technology and Innovation Fund,” states Jessa. “This level of amazing generosity represents incredible acts of kindness and will certainly have a lasting impact in elevating the level of care provided to local patients.”

Marian recognizes Hardy Diagnostics for Microbiology Laboratory gift

Marian Regional Medical Center hosted a donor recognition event to honor the generosity of Hardy Diagnostics, a local medical device manufacturer, for their significant contribution of $289,000 to acquire specialized laboratory equipment.

With Hardy Diagnostics’ generous donation, Marian was able to acquire the MALDI-TOF and Phoenix Analyzer. Both pieces of equipment will revolutionize the way Marian, and the greater Central Coast, study microbiology. Kevin Ferguson, MD, FASCP, Medical Director of Laboratory and Pathology Services, stated that the equipment will aid laboratory scientists in precisely identifying microorganisms that may be causing disease in a short period of time. This timely work will provide a more streamlined process for Marian’s clinicians to identify the most appropriate treatment options early on.

“Hardy Diagnostics has maintained a positive relationship with Marian Regional Medical Center since the company’s inception in 1980. Marian was among our first customers, so we have special

heartfelt gratitude for their contribution towards our company’s growth. Now, our company is in a position where we can make a significant contribution towards Marian’s laboratory expansion program for the benefit of the people of the Santa Maria Valley. This equipment will play a vital role in the rapid diagnosis of disease. It gives us immense joy knowing that we can partner with Marian in their mission to provide superior health care in our community.”

Paying it forward: Carol Cancino’s life-changing experience

In June 2022, Carol Cancino’s life took an unexpected turn when she developed a severely painful cough. She sought immediate medical attention, and after numerous tests and scans, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Dr. Wei Bai helped Carol adjust to this life-changing news by providing clear and empathetic explanations.

Embarking on her treatment journey filled Carol with uncertainty, but at Mission Hope Cancer Center, her fears were dispelled. Carol recalls, “Everyone would say hello to me, even though they had no idea who I was or why I was there.” This

sense of community reassured her that she would not face her cancer battle alone. Carol has

developed deep, familial bonds with the staff, who have become more than just caregivers.

Inspired by the exceptional care she received, Carol made a planned gift commitment of more than $100,000 to support Mission Hope Cancer Center.

We deeply appreciate Carol’s incredibly generous gift on behalf of the countless patients who will benefit from it. It will significantly enhance the essential treatment and care we provide patients in need, supporting the medical treatments and the circle of love we offer to those we serve.

A generous gift from a grateful patient—Mary Ann Korsten

In 2024, the Marian Foundation received a significant and generous planned gift totaling $694,933 from a grateful patient, Mary Ann Korsten.

Born in Oxnard and having called Santa Maria home for many years, Mary Ann was a former patient at Marian Regional Medical Center. Before her passing, and in honor of the compassionate care she received, she decided to leave a

meaningful planned gift to the organization by naming the Marian Foundation as a beneficiary of a deferred annuity policy.

Mary Ann was a longtime employee of ITT Federal Electric Company and later of Lockheed Martin, both located in Vandenberg. We are forever grateful for Mary Ann’s generosity and belief in the future of Marian Regional Medical Center.

Elsie Donati Endowment funds breast radiation equipment

In 1991, The Elsie D. Donati Family Trust made a meaningful planned gift to establish an endowment fund to support local cancer patients for decades to come. Each year, the Marian Foundation’s Elsie D. Donati Family Endowment Fund’s earnings allow for a generous donation to be made to Mission Hope Cancer Center. Thanks to the legacy of Elsie D. Donati and her family members, Mission Hope Cancer Center now has two new prone breast boards for patient use during radiation treatment.

Studies have shown that receiving radiation to the breast while lying on the prone breast board in the face-down position offers many benefits to women while delivering the same quality outcomes. Mission Hope Cancer Center has expert radiation oncologists, therapists, and technicians trained in this innovative treatment technique.

Donati family members Fred Donati and Shirley Fowler, along with David and Ethel Donati, pose for a photo with one of the newly acquired prone breast boards for radiation therapy.

The Tank family’s legacy of generosity

The Tank family has provided care to patients in Santa Maria for decades at Marian Regional Medical Center. Himat Tank, MD, a pediatrician, began his private medical practice in Santa Maria in the 1980s, alongside his late wife, Minakshi (Mina) Tank. Dr. Himat Tank’s son, Rikin Tank, MD, a cardiologist, now practices in Santa Maria and treats cardiac patients at Marian.

Honoring Dr. Eli Zinner

For more than 37 years, Eli Zinner, MD, FACOG, has devoted his professional life to caring for OB/GYN patients and advocating for medical education. Throughout Dr. Zinner’s career, he has dedicated 12 years to caring for patients at Marian Regional Medical Center and has been an instrumental physician faculty member for the hospital’s OB/GYN Residency Program.

When Dr. Eli Zinner’s friends and family learned of an opportunity to honor him for his dedication to his profession and his patients, his closest loved ones came together in an extraordinary show of support.

The Tank family recently visited Marian Regional Medical Center to celebrate and unveil three inpatient room plaques, all made possible by their generous contribution to the Marian Foundation.

These rooms are dedicated in memory of beloved Tank family members, including Mina Tank, Dr. Himat Tank’s parents and Mina Tank’s parents.

Dr. Eli Zinner’s loved ones gather in celebration of his birthday, where he was surprised with the formal announcement that his loved ones were collectively raising $100,000 in his honor.

More than 55 individuals contributed gifts to the Marian Foundation—many accompanied by heartfelt handwritten notes—raising an impressive $100,000 in his honor. Dr. Zinner’s loved ones’ generosity supports the Foundation’s fundraising effort for Marian’s OB/GYN Residency Program Clinic and is truly special, as it will sponsor a naming opportunity in his honor at the new clinic.

Marian Foundation receives Foundation of the Year Award from CommonSpirit Health

The Marian Foundation was honored with CommonSpirit Health’s Foundation of the Year Award for Fiscal Year 2023. This coveted award recognizes one fundraising foundation across CommonSpirit Health’s entire network, which includes more than 80 fundraising entities.

The Foundation of the Year award is presented to the top-performing CommonSpirit Health foundation that excels in three main categories: major gifts, grants, and planned gifts. Awardees must

demonstrate a well-balanced philanthropic program, maintaining expenses under budget while investing in transformative programs and building strong teams dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission.

In Fiscal Year 2023, the Marian Foundation team increased fundraising revenue by 29% compared to the prior year, raising nearly $5.1 million, surpassing the original 2023 year-end goal of $4.2 million.

New Outpatient Psychiatric Unit helps community

Since opening in 2022, Marian Regional Medical Center’s Outpatient Psychiatric Unit (OPU) has provided care for patients experiencing acute mental health or behavioral health crises. This facility significantly shortens the wait time to see specialists, delivering care quickly and improving patient outcomes.

The OPU is the only facility of its kind in northern Santa Barbara County and all of San Luis Obispo County, offering individuals suffering from mental health emergencies local, specialized care 24 hours a day. The eight-chair unit is a locked, LantermanPetris-Short (LPS) Certified facility that treats both voluntarily and involuntarily admitted mental health patients.

Before the OPU opened, patients often faced days of waiting in local emergency departments to see a psychiatric specialist at an inpatient unit hundreds of miles from their own community. With the OPU now operational, the majority of individuals seen can safely be discharged to a lower level of care back in the community, eliminating the need for an inpatient behavioral health hospital stays miles away.

The Marian Foundation has raised more than $3.7 million for the Outpatient Psychiatric Unit since 2019.

“This unit dramatically improves the access to high level expertise and mental health care for the patients of our community, that’s with a psychiatrist who is board certified, specializing in emergency psychiatry. And they’re given access to specially trained staff that includes nurses, licensed psychiatric techs, and staff in the unit that has special training to provide highlevel, expert care to these patients.”—David Ketelaar, MD, Medical Director of Acute Behavioral Health Care Services at Marian

On June 4, 2024, Marian Regional Medical Center unveiled the new Labor and Delivery Triage entrance named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. James D. Cusack.

Dr. Jim Cusack is known for his incredible dedication as a longtime OB/GYN physician in Santa Maria for more than 40 years, delivering thousands of infants throughout his career. Furthermore, Jim’s many professional accomplishments were made possible by the unconditional support of his loving wife, Maureen.

Being married for more than 65 years is a rare and extraordinary milestone. Dr. Cusack and Maureen’s marriage represents the epitome of love and devotion to family. The couple’s commitment to each other and their growing family is their greatest joy as their lasting legacy continues through their five children, 13 grandchildren, and 26 (and counting) great-grandchildren.

Marian Regional Medical Center is grateful to the Cusack family for their significant support, and it is an honor for the hospital’s Labor and Delivery Triage Entrance to bear the

esteemed names of Dr. and Mrs. James D. Cusack.

At the recent unveiling ceremony, Sue Andersen, President and CEO of Marian Regional Medical Center, shared, “There is no question that the Cusack family exudes humankindness in everything that they do. On behalf of the entire Marian team, we thank the Cusack family for supporting local OB/GYN patients and our hospital’s OB/GYN Residency Program.”

Delivering Hope: the 11th Annual Day of Hope

The 11th annual Day of Hope, benefiting local cancer patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center, was once again an astounding success and delivered hope unlike any other year. On August 21, 2024, more than 700 community volunteers sold the special edition Day of Hope Santa Maria Times newspaper throughout Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Nipomo, and the Five Cities area. Our organization extends tremendous appreciation to the many generous event sponsors and donors, as well as the dedicated

DAY OF HOPE 2024 AMBASSADOR: EILEEN HONGO

community members who served as team leaders or volunteered to sell newspapers.

In April 2023, Eileen Hongo discovered a lump on her breast and scheduled a doctor’s appointment with her primary care physician. Following a breast biopsy, Eileen’s diagnosis of stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma was confirmed. Eileen proudly completed her chemotherapy and radiation treatment in 2024 at Mission Hope Cancer Center.

Day of Hope 2024 Ambassador Eileen Hongo (right) poses for a photo with the Day of Hope newspaper alongside her husband Mark Hongo.

It is the Marian Foundation’s pleasure to recognize and celebrate the generosity of those donors who have invested in the medical center’s healing mission. The individuals, organizations, and companies listed below have given donations of $25 or more in support of Marian Regional Medical Center programs and services between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2024.

In October 2024, Toyota Santa Maria hosted its Pinktober Pumpkin Patch, a month-long fundraiser benefiting the Mission Hope Cancer Center. Hundreds of pumpkins were painted and sold at the dealership and in the community to raise funds for local cancer patients. The fundraising effort, in partnership with Cal Coast Machinery and other local businesses, raised $14,400! Toyota Santa Maria’s recent donation and continued support of Mission Hope Cancer Center is in memory of the dealership’s late Toyota associate and friend, Ken Flores, who bravely fought cancer.

Shout-out to the young players and parents of the Orcutt Youth Softball League for hosting “Pink the Park” in October! The event’s purpose, raising funds for the Mission Hope Cancer Center, was a resounding success. The softball players all wore pink gear during their games and each team decorated a portion of the fence with the top design winning a prize. Plus, the softball families donated baked goods to the bake sale held during the event, raising over $1,100 in support of local cancer patient care.

In 2024, Allan Hancock College hosted a basketball doubleheader while making a slam dunk impact for Mission Hope Cancer Center! The 11th annual Carney’s Coaches vs. Cancer Night was again a huge success, donating $1,350 to patients in need at Mission Hope Cancer Center. Our organization extends a huge thank you to the entire Bulldog Nation for their support in the local fight against cancer! The event was renamed in honor of the late Larry Carney, a former Allan Hancock College women’s basketball coach.

Memorial and tribute gifts

In times of sorrow, a gift in memoriam provides the opportunity to honor the passing of a friend or a loved one. In times of joy, a gift in celebration serves as a unique acknowledgment of a milestone, such as the birth of a baby, a birthday, an anniversary, or a special occasion in honor of a friend, relative, or colleague. The below memorial and tribute gifts were received between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2024.

The City of Santa Maria Park Rangers participated in No Shave November in 2024 and donated all raised proceeds to Mission Hope Cancer Center. What started as a light-hearted competition has “grown” into an annual tradition for the department, this year raising $1,050! Our organization cannot thank the Santa Maria City Park Rangers enough for their generous support.

Each year, the Legion of Marian Women’s Giving Society hosts a series of events with keynote speakers from various programs or departments. Each speaker presents an area of focus where additional funding is needed. The winning program, decided by total votes, gives members a voice in making our hospital a stronger facility to ensure that expert care is close, convenient, and available when it’s needed most. The 2023-24 votes awarded the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s need for a TECOtherm Neo Infant Cooling System and Ultrasound Probes for transporting fragile neonatal patients. At left, Rocky Greer, MD, Neonatologist, accepts the award for funding in support of the NICU, alongside Kathleen Sullivan, PhD, RN, Vice President of Post Acute Care Services, and Chuck Merrill, MD, Chief Medical Officer.

Patty Hernandez, LVN at Marian Regional Medical Center (right), works in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and in celebration of her 50th birthday, she participated in Marian’s Donate Your Birthday Program, where she raised generous donations totaling more than $1,000 in support of the NICU. Patty shared that she feels grateful to work in such an impactful place, and celebrating her birthday by donating to the NICU “was the best thing I could’ve done.” Patty feels so fortunate that she can give back to the department she deeply cherishes.
