LETTER FRO M TH E PRESI D ENT Dear Friends of Marian, The new Marian Regional Medical Center opened on May 22, 2012, and will forever be remembered as an historic and monumental day as we ushered in a new era of health care for Santa Maria and our surrounding communities. In less than five hours, more than 100 patients were safely transferred and resting comfortably in their new private patient rooms. The patient move process was as seamless as it was when patients were moved from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, to Marian Hospital in 1967. Then, and now, patients were safely moved into the new hospital, all without missing a meal. We embarked on the journey to build a new, state-of-the-art hospital more than 15 years ago. In 2008, the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation initiated the Cornerstone Campaign, the largest fundraising effort ever launched in Santa Maria and Northern Santa Barbara County with a goal to raise $15 million from community donations. Due to your unprecedented support and generosity, Marian successfully exceeded the campaign’s goal and is expected to reach an impressive $17 million in the coming months. In the two months since opening the new hospital, we have continued to observe and hear about the positive impact and patient and family experiences, made possible with our new 191-bed, modern facility. The positive stories from physicians, nurses and staff regarding improved patient care and service are remarkable. Recently, a young patient in the Emergency Department, while probably not enjoying the suturing of a wound by a physician, did find pleasure using the remote control to watch the television program of her choice while receiving sutures. We have seen incredible bonding experiences for mothers, new babies and their families as they enjoy their own private labor, delivery and postpartum rooms. We have observed families in their private, serene and calming waiting areas, comforting each other while waiting for their loved ones who were recovering from open heart surgery and other critical surgeries or illnesses. We have heard testimonies from grateful patients and physicians explaining how special it is for terminally-ill patients and their families to be able to spend significant moments privately together with dignity and grace. Marian Regional Medical Center may be the newest hospital on the Central Coast, but health care is about more than just a new building. It is a promise to provide our patients and community with exceptional medical care, today, tomorrow and every day. That promise means we will continue to retain and recruit highly trained nurses, health care workers and physicians from the nation’s most prestigious medical schools and premier medical centers with exemplary medical credentials and wide-ranging specialty expertise. Because of the commitment we hold to accomplishing that mission, the vision and planning for a new facility began more than 15 years ago. The result of that vision is our new, state-of-the-art, 235,000-square-foot facility.

Strategically Improving and Changing… The planning for the new facility was approached strategically to ensure that Marian not only meets the immediate needs of the still-growing community, but also provides for the future of health care in the Santa Maria Valley. The completion of the expanded hospital facility is a historic milestone and an important step in providing the highest levels of care through the latest technological advances and enhancements to patient comfort, healing, and safety.

Historic Generosity… Surrounded by beautiful, rolling hills, the community of Santa Maria has experienced rapid expansion in recent years. One of the qualities that continues to draw people to the Santa Maria Valley is that, despite its growth, the city still preserves a smalltown feeling. That feeling of closeness and community are continuously demonstrated through the generous support and cooperative spirit of the residents of the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding communities. The Cornerstone Campaign began in 2007 with a goal of raising $15 million to help fund the hospital expansion project – making it the largest fundraising effort ever launched in Santa Maria. As the campaign progressed, community members rose to the challenge of ensuring that all patients in our community have access to the highest levels of health care without having to leave the area. As a matter of fact, the people of our community gave so generously that the original campaign goal was exceeded by nearly $2 million.

“The support from the community to build this new age, model health care facility has been truly amazing,” remarked Stephanie Grogan, Executive Director of Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation. “It is an extraordinary testament to the high regard for Marian’s mission and the excellent work accomplished and care provided here every day for patients and families. We are so very grateful for the generosity of so many community partners.” When the project was nearing completion, an additional need of $750,000 was identified for equipment and enhancements not included in the original plans. This much-needed funding helped to provide: »» Expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit »» Dedicated CT scanner in the Emergency Department with a supplemental cardiac and stroke diagnostic capabilities »» Fetal and cardiac monitoring capabilities in both the Critical Care Unit and the Obstetrics Department »» Enhanced inpatient renal dialysis care These enhancements raised the overall goal of the campaign to $17 million. Again, the people of Santa Maria demonstrated their commitment to providing the best in health care for the community, and we are very close to reaching our new goal.

Celebrating the Completion… On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, dignitaries, leaders, and residents of the Santa Maria Valley came together to celebrate the completion of the new hospital to mark the blessing and dedication of the new facility. “This new facility represents an investment in the health and well being of this community,” remarked Lloyd Dean, President and CEO of Dignity Health, Marian’s parent company during the event. “It also represents a new chapter in the legacy of care and compassion that has so distinguished Marian for more than 70 years.” The expansion of the facility increases both capacity and services, so the hospital has a new name to reflect that growth: Marian Regional Medical Center. The decision to rename the facility was made as we’ve witnessed the transformation from a smaller, community-based hospital to one with expanding services that is leading our community into the future of health care. Ultimately, this new facility allows us to fulfill our mission of bringing high-quality, compassionate care to each patient we serve for generations to come.

M ISSI O N H O PE CAN CER CENTER A New Standard in Cancer Care The recent spring opening of Mission Hope Cancer Center, located on the Marian Regional Medical Center campus, marks a milestone in cancer care for patients and their families in the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding communities. It is the first integrated, comprehensive cancer care facility on the Central Coast, meaning patients will no longer have to travel to different locations to receive cancer diagnoses and treatments. Mission Hope Cancer Center features expert physicians and highly-trained staff, innovative treatments, and the latest technologies as well as patient advocates and support services for patients and families, all at one location. After practicing on the Central Coast for many years and witnessing the added stress cancer patients were facing in having to visit several different locations for their diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Robert Dichmann, Marian Cancer Care Medical Director and Founder of Mission Hope Cancer Center, began planning to bring all aspects of cancer care together in one facility. In working with Marian and various community members and after many years of committed planning, Dr. Dichmann’s vision became a reality. “Since opening in late March of this year, we have already heard numerous patient stories of how important and special a center of this level is for those with cancer,” explained Dr. Dichmann. “Patients are truly grateful that the Central Coast now has a comprehensive cancer center with state-of-the-art technology and treatment services, and we are seeing how Mission Hope Cancer Center is truly improving care and the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.”

technology also has a 4D imaging system and respiratory gating that improves accuracy to under a millimeter and reduces radiation exposure to the patient by one-quarter. Mission Hope is one of only 200 sites in the world to install this sophisticated radiation therapy technology and is the only non-teaching facility. Mission Hope Cancer Center also features the Marian PET/CT Center, which includes a PET/CT scanner and a state-of-theart CT scanner dedicated for patients undergoing treatment planning for radiation therapy. Using these scanners, physicians will be able to quickly and accurately identify tumors, as well as healthy tissues to be avoided. In addition to the highest quality images available today, these scanners will also provide Mission Hope physicians with the ability to target movement in a technique called 4 Dimensional Computed Tomography (4DCT).

Not only does Mission Hope provide a compassionate approach to cancer care, but it features the latest technologies and innovative treatment options usually available only at major teaching centers. One example is the Varian Truebeam linear accelerator – a newly advanced technology that represents an exponential leap forward in the speed, power and precision of radiation therapy. The TrueBeam Linear Accelerator delivers radiation at a faster dose rate than most conventional linear accelerators, which translates into shorter treatment times for patients, even cutting treatment periods up to 50 percent. An affiliation with UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, an internationally-renowned cancer treatment and research facility, will provide local cancer patients access to a variety of clinical trials, one of the most effective weapons against cancer. “Having everything under one roof at Mission Hope allows us, the physicians and staff, to provide patients with both cuttingedge treatments and compassionate care. The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has awarded Marian the highest accreditation available to a community hospital, the designation as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program. That same organization has also granted Marian seven commendations for exceptional performance and the Outstanding Achievement Award. In addition, Marian was recently recognized as a Gold Standard Employer by the CEO Roundtable for Cancer for efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for employees and their family members by promoting healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging early detection through cancer screenings, and ensuring access to quality treatment. The opening of Mission Hope means patients will no longer have to travel outside of the area to receive the highest level of cancer care and treatment. Featuring state-of-art technology surrounded by the picturesque views of the Santa Maria Valley, this new facility is now improving the lives of local cancer patients by enhancing patient comfort and providing an ideal environment for healing.

I N N OVATIVE TECH N O LO GY AT MARIAN Robotic Surgery Program In late 2011, Marian introduced the Robotic Surgery Program to patients and the community. This new and exciting program utilizes the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System, a new technology for performing minimally-invasive surgeries. “The da Vinci allows surgeons to perform complex procedures using a minimally-invasive approach resulting in less pain, smaller scars and shorter recovery times for patients,” remarked Christopher Johnson, M.D., Chair of the Robotic Surgery Committee. “The da Vinci Surgery System’s list of procedures is rapidly growing, and this exciting addition to Marian provides our Central Coast patients and community with the most advanced surgical technology.” The revolutionary da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System is designed to provide superior patient outcomes, clinical efficiency and the highest level of safety in the operating room. This stateof-the-art robotic technology offers surgeons superior visualization, enhanced dexterity and unparalleled precision compared to traditional approaches.

longer hospital stays after their surgeries,” Dr. Johnson added. “With da Vinci, patients are able to return to their normal activities much quicker.” This system enables surgeons to perform more complex surgeries with an incision that is only between one and two centimeters long. Unlike other less invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic surgeries, the da Vinci system doesn’t require the use of rigid instruments that can only be viewed on a two-dimensional screen. The da Vinci system allows surgeons to have a three-dimensional view of the procedure while using wristed instruments that have even greater range of motion than the human hand. In the end, it is a better choice for minimally-invasive procedures than traditional surgery or even laparoscopic procedures. The da Vinci robot can be used for many surgeries, including prostate, kidney, hysterectomy, gynecologic oncology, colorectal, acid reflux, weight loss, and lung. Currently, seven surgeons at Marian have been trained on the robot with several others planning to undergo the training.

Rob is the Senior Vice President for HUB International Insurance Services. Now in his initial term as a Foundation board member, Rob has extensive experience with and commitment to numerous community organizations. He is involved with Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, Santa Maria Elks, Breakfast Rotary Club of Santa Maria, and the Boys and Girls Club Foundation. Rob is also currently serving as a Trustee for the Orcutt Union School District.

Barbara has worked for 13 years as an engineer at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Barbara has a wealth of volunteer service experience through her son’s school. She also has several community connections throughout Santa Maria and Lompoc that she will bring to her first term as a Board member. Before serving on the Foundation Board, Barbara showed great interest in Marian’s programs and services, and her enthusiasm and commitment to Marian has only continued to grow during her first term.

Sofia is the current Sales Manager for Emerald Wave Media, her most-recent position in a career spanning 20 years in both English and Spanish radio and television. Because of her professional experience, she brings a unique perspective and invaluable knowledge to reaching all members of our community. Sofia has also been involved in a wide variety of community organizations, including First Five of Santa Barbara County, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, and the Alliance for Pharmaceutical Access.

Anne works as a special education teacher for Orcutt Union School District. She has a strong history of commitment to education, demonstrated by her service as a volunteer at St. Louis de Monfort Grade School and Parish along with St. Joseph High School. Anne has always been a friend to Marian and brings a renewed commitment to the programs and services of Marian through her service on the Foundation Board.

Jeff is the CEO and President of CoastHills Federal Credit Union. He brings not only an extensive understanding of banking and finance to his initial term as a Foundation Board member, but also a long history of service on other local foundation boards, including Allan Hancock College Foundation, Lompoc Valley Hospital Foundation, and Lompoc Community Development Foundation. Jeff ’s interest and involvement with Marian has made him a great addition to the Board.

A N EW H OSPITAL. A N EW PU RPOSE. New Opportunities of Service The choice to become a volunteer was an easy one for Carrie Robinson, President of the Marian Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. After losing a loved one, Carrie decided to start serving at Marian. “I wanted to be able to be of service to someone, to help them through a tough time,” Carrie said. Carrie’s story is not unique among the members of Volunteer Services. Marian has a long tradition of wonderful, servicefocused volunteers who not only contribute to the seamless operation of the hospital’s day-to-day activities, but also provide support for Marian’s patients, families, and staff.

Like all of the departments at Marian, Volunteer Services has been working diligently to prepare for the opening of the new hospital building. With the expansion of the new hospital, the opportunities for volunteering are also expanding.

New Services The need for volunteers is greater than ever before. Marian continues to add new services as we strive to offer the highest levels of patient-centered care. With this focus on our patients, volunteers are needed to perform many roles in just about every department of the hospital, including working in reception and hospitality, providing clerical and patient care support, escorting patients and families throughout the hospital, and many other areas.

New Hours Recognizing that the needs of Marian’s patients and staff are greater than what can be met during normal business hours, Volunteer Services will be expanding its hours to include evening and weekend shifts. Volunteer Services is hoping to provide assistance during the hospital’s visiting hours, which are seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The shifts for the expanded hours will be shorter than shifts during business hours, only two or three hours depending on each department’s needs. In addition, these extended hours will provide greater opportunities for students and those who work during the day to serve Marian’s patients and staff through volunteering.

Carrie Robinson commented on the personal rewards for volunteering, “The more we look outside of ourselves and serve, the greater we are blessed. We think we’re coming to help them [the patients and staff], but they’re blessing our lives.” Signing up to volunteer is simple. PLANNED GIVING: A LEGACY O F CARI N G Ensuring the Future of Health Care for Santa Maria Dante E. Tognazzi, Jr., is a man characterized by service and faith. His kindness and generosity of spirit are recognizable as soon as any individual meets him. A second-generation Santa Maria native, Dante has a long history with not only with the community, but with Marian and the Sisters of Saint Francis. A long-time volunteer at Marian Regional Medical Center and at St. Mary of the Assumption School, Dante is committed to bringing the best to Santa Maria. Dante has seen the growth of this community from a small town to a community of more than 100,000 people, and he has also witnessed the growth of health care in Santa Maria, noting his remembrances of opening of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital by the Sisters of Saint Francis to what has become the new, expanded Marian Regional Medical Center. “With the opening of the new hospital, Santa Maria is experiencing even greater strides toward expanded health care,” recalled Dante. Dante had decided to give to Marian even before the plans to expand the existing hospital had been finalized. He chose to give through a planned gift to support the needs of future Marian patients and families. Dante’s gift was given to honor the legacy of care and service provided by the founding congregation of the Sisters of Saint Francis.

This is the largest annual funding in the Foundation’s history. A significant portion of this funding is from the success of the Cornerstone Campaign, which is the fulfillment of the Foundation’s funding commitment to Marian for the building of the new hospital.

Beginning in 2007, the Cornerstone Campaign raised money to support the building of the new hospital facility.

The Robotic Surgery Program, one of Marian’s newest technologies, utilizes the da Vinci Surgical System, a minimally-invasive approach to surgery so that patients have shorter recovery times, smaller scars, and less pain.

These funds help support Marian’s programs dealing with pain management at Marian Extended Care Center, home health visits from Marian Home Care Services, and end-of-life care offered through Marian Hospice.

These funds provide for the numerous programs and services offered by Marian, including maternity and newborn care, staff education, rehabilitation services, and many others.

With the opening of the new hospital, many equipment items were purchased to enhance patient care and safety. Some of these items include a new nurse call system to complement the new pod-style setup of patient rooms, new ventilators for the Respiratory Therapy Department, and new medication dispensing cabinets that automatically dispense doses of medication and surgical supplies to help reduce medical errors and increase patient safety.

Mother Magdalen – Mother Magdalen is the foundress of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, the order responsible for founding Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, which eventually became Marian.

St. Clare – Born to a noble family in the 12th century, St. Clare left her family to join the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi.

The Marian Medical Center Foundation was established in 1982 to secure philanthropic support for Marian and the health care mission of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity.

St. Francis – St. Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscan Order and lived in the 12th century.

TH E TAU M O N U M ENT As a symbol of faith, love and hope, the Tau Cross Monument will remain a significant symbol in the architecture and landscape of Marian Regional Medical Center. The Tau Cross which serves as a tribute to the healing ministry and presence of the Sisters of Saint Francis, the founders of Marian, is located on each of the three sides at the top of the Monument. At the base of the Tau Monument are three statues: Saint Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order; Saint Clare, who followed and continued the ministry of Saint Francis; and Mother Magdalen Damen, the Foundress of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Penance and Christian Charity. The Tau Monument will forever serve as a symbol of gratitude to the Sisters of Saint Francis for their visionary leadership, dedication, and service to the people of the Santa Maria Valley.
