A message from Sue Andersen, President and CEO
Sue Andersen President and CEO Marian Regional Medical Center
Dear friends of Marian Regional Medical Center, As we move forward in 2021, I would like to take an important pause to reflect on the unexpected challenges our world, community, and hospital faced within the last year. Life in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic has forced Marian Regional Medical Center to quickly adapt to ever-changing clinical operations and protocols. However, in spite of the uncertainty the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, the outpouring of humanity our organization has demonstrated and received has been both humbling and inspiring. Clearly, the past year has been unprecedented, and our hospital would not have succeeded through our countless challenges without the dedicated support shown by our gracious community. At the beginning of the pandemic, community members were asked to do their part to flatten the curve by staying home, social distancing and maintaining hygienic practices. In addition to these precautions, local residents continue to demonstrate their support of our devoted health care professionals by providing generous monetary gifts and remarkable in-kind contributions of meals, flowers, critical personal protective equipment—and our organization could not be more grateful. Nothing is more important than ensuring the health and safety of our community and our workforce. As the leader of Marian, I am truly proud as I witness Marian’s health care professionals’ willingness to answer the call of our mission with such unwavering compassion and courage. Day in and day out, Marian employees serve our community with great privilege by providing exceptional health care and kindness to thousands of COVID-19 inpatients, along with thousands of others— our family members, friends, and neighbors. Despite the challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, within the pages of this edition of Innovation you will learn about Marian’s newly established ECMO program which provides truly life-saving care to COVID-19 patients, the opening of Marian’s new Crisis Stabilization Unit for behavioral health patients, and how your meaningful philanthropic contributions are making a lasting impact in our community. In addition to Marian’s heroic COVID-19 response efforts, the hospital was recently named among the top 5% in the nation for overall clinical outcomes and excellence by Healthgrades, earning the prestigious honor as one of America’s best 250 hospitals for 2021. I want to take this opportunity to thank our valued donors, community partners, and patients for your generous support during a most difficult year. As an organization and as a community, we know that there is still work ahead and our resilience remains vital; however, through our compassion for each other, hope is on the horizon. In gratitude,
Sue Andersen President and CEO Marian Regional Medical Center

The heroic legacy of the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation “Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the term ‘health care heroes’ continues to be used to describe Marian’s clinical providers; however, the Smith family members are undeniable health care heroes, as their investment is literally saving lives and is a profound example of their family’s legacy of generosity,” explains Sue Andersen, President and CEO, Marian Regional Medical Center. “The Smith family’s significant donation is a true blessing, as it is allowing our organization to transform both vital and newly developed programs for Marian’s coronavirus response effort.”
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program
n Mark and Dorothy Smith
Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation funds crucial COVID-19 response efforts at Marian Regional Medical Center totaling $325,702 From the moment the COVID-19 health care crisis began, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation made it their mission to partner with Marian Regional Medical Center, providing vital support at the most opportune time. Mark Smith, a successful construction entrepreneur and real estate developer, spent his life building homes and commercial properties in Santa Maria. He and his wife, Dorothy, invested their lives in building the future of health care for the Santa Maria Valley. Throughout their legacy of generosity, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation has been instrumental in supporting Marian’s philanthropic needs, and most recently awarded more than $325,702 in grant funding in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the generous philanthropic support of the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation, Marian Regional Medical Center has secured the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) medical technology for critically ill COVID-19 patients and others experiencing life-threatening conditions. Marian’s ECMO Program began treating patients in February of 2021 and is now the only hospital between the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles with this advanced life-saving equipment, mitigating the need to travel outside the area for care. The ECMO medical equipment is similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used in open heart surgery as it pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest. When patients receive ECMO treatment, blood flows through tubing to an artificial lung in the machine that adds oxygen and takes out carbon dioxide; then the blood is warmed to body temperature and pumped back into the body. Due to the generous support of the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation, Marian has secured the ECMO medical technology and is offering critically ill COVID-19 patients, and other critically ill patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, access to

ECMO treatments without needing to leave the area. Inspired by Santa Maria COVID-19 survivors Louis and Melissa Meza, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation Directors recognized that the region’s most critically ill COVID-19 patients in need of ECMO treatment were being transferred out of the area to receive this life-saving procedure. As reported in the local media, Melissa Meza experienced severe complications due to COVID-19 which required various treatments and an emergency transfer to a Santa Monica hospital to receive the life-saving ECMO treatment. In response, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation graciously made a significant donation in honor of Louis and Melissa Meza to fund the acquisition of Marian’s ECMO medical technology. “The past year has been the most challenging time in health care for our country,” said Craig and Cameron Smith, Directors of the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation. “When we heard about the strength, courage and perseverance of Louis and Melissa Meza in their fight against the coronavirus, we reached out to Marian Regional Medical Center to find out how we could help. That journey resulted in Marian developing the new ECMO Program, and the first of many successful treatments has now begun.”
n Paul Perry, MD, and the new ECMO machine at Marian Regional Medical Center. A donation from the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation made the acquisition possible. Photo by Jason Anderson, Santa Maria Times.
In addition to the ECMO medical technology, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation partnered with Marian Regional Medical Center throughout the pandemic to support vital community services, patients, and medical professionals, including a food pantry to serve vulnerable homebound patients during the pandemic, iPad technology for patients to communicate with loved ones when visitation was limited, and meals for staff throughout the year. Throughout their legacy of generosity, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation has been instrumental in supporting Marian’s philanthropic needs, and most recently awarded more than $325,702 in grant funding in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation remains a gracious long-time supporter of Marian, and our organization is incredibly grateful to Craig and Cameron Smith, Mark and Dorothy’s sons, for their family’s continued legacy of generosity. The kindness that continues to be shown by the Smith family has provided an enormous sense of support for physicians, nurses, and health care professionals, and their family’s long-standing friendship is irreplaceable.

COVID physician leaders’ messages Kevin Ferguson, MD The coronavirus pandemic has placed a new emphasis on the importance of having direct access to advanced clinical laboratory testing in our community. It should not be difficult to get a laboratory test and the results should be timely, accurate and accessible. Our laboratories on the Central Coast established highly sensitive, robust testing platforms early in the pandemic with the assistance of local donors and industry partnerships. Through our network of hospitals, urgent care centers and physician offices, we have been able to offer testing to more than 150,000 patients in the communities we serve. We continue to work closely with our local public health departments, community partners and area universities to closely monitor disease prevalence with a new focus on COVID variants. With the support of our Foundation, we hope to continue to invest in our laboratories, adding additional advanced testing platforms for infectious disease as well as oncology. We are committed to providing community-focused, personalized medical testing and will continue to evolve to meet whatever challenges we face in the future. Marian receives $2 million donation Anonymous donor funds advanced technology and innovation at Marian The Marian Foundation is pleased to announce that a $2 million philanthropic gift from an anonymous donor was received to support quality health care in Santa Maria in a very significant and impactful way. As a result, the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors approved the use of the $2 million donation to create the Advanced Technology and Innovation Board-Designated Endowment Fund, which will provide continued acquisition of leading-edge medical equipment and technology, now and in the future. “The health care of all community members is essential, and the anonymous benefactor’s intention to support the advancement of Marian’s medical technology for current and future generations makes
this gift truly transformative,” states Sue Andersen, President and CEO, Marian Regional Medical Center. “This impactful contribution comes at a much-needed time, as local residents’ health care needs continue to grow at a rapid pace. On behalf of hospital leadership and the Marian Foundation Board of Directors, we extend our sincerest appreciation and gratitude for this meaningful gift.” For more information about how you can support the hospital’s investment in medical equipment and technological breakthroughs, please contact the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation at (805) 739-3595.

Crisis Stabilization Unit Marian develops behavioral health crisis services
n Group therapy room
Each year, close to one in five people suffer from an acute psychiatric illness and would benefit from treatment. With mental health needs crossing all socio-economic boundaries and the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders, Marian is committed to developing Behavioral Health Services and is opening a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) in 2021. Due to county, state, and nationwide shortages of inpatient behavioral health beds, mental health patients are often forced to wait many hours or even days in the Emergency Department until an out-of-area bed is available. Marian’s CSU will provide a much-needed missing element of local care for patients in acute crisis. “Now, more than ever, our medical center is in need of funding for our CSU, since as the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, medical experts forecast an increasing need for crisis mental health care across all communities,” states David Ketelaar, MD, Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services. “The earlier we can start treating our persons in
14
crisis in the CSU’s therapeutic, soothing environment instead of holding them in isolation in a single room in our chaotic emergency department awaiting a transfer out of our community, the better the outcome that will be achieved.” Marian’s CSU will allow for local behavioral health voluntary and involuntary patients to remain in our community, as 50-75% of patients treated at the CSU will not require transfer to inpatient beds outside the community. The CSU’s team is comprised of specially trained psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and support staff.

When Jon and Janeen Wesner learned of Marian Regional Medical Center’s plans to establish a Crisis Stabilization Unit for local behavioral health patients in need, it was a community endeavor that placed a heavy rallying cry on their hearts. Given the odds, a behavioral health-related incident will impact someone you know and care about. Behavioral health conditions cut across all racial and socio-economic boundaries, affecting one in five United States adults, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
16
With the potential for thousands of residents on the Central Coast to benefit from access to Marian’s Crisis Stabilization Unit, Jon and Janeen felt called to make a significant gift in support of the new outpatient behavioral health service by sponsoring the new facility’s Family and Visitor Waiting Room. Like the vast majority, Jon and Janeen are no strangers to witnessing widespread behavioral health challenges affecting so many in our community, state, and nation. “Truly, everyone is touched by behavioral health and
the Crisis Stabilization Unit project has been heavy on our hearts,” shared Jon. “We believe we are called by God to help those in need, and through our support, we know we are answering His call.” As a Charter Member of The Legion of Marian, the medical center’s women’s giving society, Janeen learned from hospital leaders of the need for the Crisis Stabilization Unit. She then not only shared this need with Jon to pursue a charitable contribution, but she also dedicated efforts to the Crisis Stabilization Unit’s fundraising campaign to raise $1.5 million.
To bring about meaningful communitywide change of great magnitude, the action of people with driven purpose and passion is required—people like Jon and Janeen Wesner. Jon and Janeen’s recent generosity will remain a tremendous blessing for Marian, and their legacy will be forever woven into the lives of the mental health patients and health care professionals at Marian’s Crisis Stabilization Unit.
“I’ve had loved ones in the past that would have greatly benefited from a local CSU, but instead had to travel out of the area for the help they needed. So, knowing the need and hearing the specific plan for behavioral health, we knew we had to do something to help,” Janeen recounted after learning about how the Crisis Stabilization Unit will fill a current gap for behavioral health patients. “We want to bring people together, both the patients in crisis and the families who are suffering. Our prayer is that this place will be one of hope and healing for those who are struggling.”

Honoring longtime Marian leader Chuck Cova
n Chuck Cova (center, above), former Division President/CEO, Dignity Health Central Coast, with the Sisters of St. Francis, Marian Regional Medical Center’s founders, at the groundbreaking and blessing ceremony for Marian’s new hospital in November of 2008. As Marian’s founders, the Sisters of St. Francis opened Santa Maria’s first hospital in 1940, and their visionary leadership and heritage continues.
After 38 years of dedicated service as the President and CEO for Marian Regional Medical Center and the Dignity Health Central Coast Division, Chuck Cova’s tenure concluded on January 2, 2021.
n In 2009, Chuck addresses press conference attendees where he publicly announced the $15 million Cornerstone Campaign fundraising initiative to build Marian’s new hospital.

Under Chuck’s leadership, the provision and access for health care services throughout the Central Coast were transformed into the most robust and successful health care delivery system in northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Throughout Chuck’s tenure, the Central Coast Division, including the Ventura market, has seen tremendous growth and expansion, with significant physician recruitment efforts, development of clinical services, and key alliances, acquisitions, and partnerships. During Chuck’s leadership, the Central Coast hospitals, long-term care facilities, acute rehab centers and physician clinics have consistently ranked among the top divisions for Dignity Health
and CommonSpirit Health for quality, safety, and patient experience, with national recognition for many clinical and safety results. The Central Coast Division also consistently ranked as one of the top divisions for financial performance. Through Chuck’s leadership, Marian was transformed from a small community hospital into an award-winning, nationally recognized regional medical center with the development of significant clinical services and alignments including the heart program, cancer care, maternal-child health including neonatology, interventional/endovascular services, stroke certification, and trauma services. In 2004, as the President and CEO of Marian, working collaboratively with the Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo communities and physicians, Chuck led the acquisition of French Hospital Medical Center and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital into then Catholic Healthcare West (now Dignity Health). Chuck led both hospitals out of bankruptcy into thriving, successful hospitals, reestablishing the cardiac program and developing the maternal-child health program at French Hospital Medical Center, and opening the Acute Rehabilitation Center at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital. Chuck was responsible for establishing Community Boards, and hiring and developing the leadership teams at both hospitals. Chuck and his wife, Marie, have made Santa Maria their home for nearly four decades. Both Chuck and Marie are proud to be active community members and feel it has been a privilege to have raised their two children on the Central Coast. In addition to their service to the community, Marie has dedicated her career to local children and education, serving as a former Vice Principal and teacher at St. Mary of the Assumption School. Together, Chuck and Marie continue to support numerous local nonprofit organizations through philanthropic gifts and mentorship efforts. An incredibly special highlight and significant accomplishment of Chuck’s career was the opening of Marian’s new hospital in 2012. Under Chuck’s leadership and direction, the Santa Maria community saw a longstanding goal become a reality with the construction and opening of Marian’s new, $218 million, state-of-the-art, 191-bed hospital which includes private patient rooms, a 21-bed

Marian’s expert neurosurgeons When it comes to brain and spinal care, the unexpected can happen on any day, at any time. Fortunately, Marian Regional Medical Center offers the latest in neurosurgical care under the guidance of two expertly trained neurosurgeons. The Neurosurgery Program at Marian offers aroundthe-clock care under the leadership of Nicholas Slimack, MD, and Matthew Schreckinger, MD, two highly regarded neurosurgeons. Dr. Slimack completed a seven-year neurosurgery residency at Northwestern University and completed a fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Spine Center. Dr. Schreckinger also boasts extensive neurological surgery residency training from Wayne State University with advanced spine surgery training. In addition to the expert physicians, the utilization of advanced technology means the program is rapidly growing. “Having two full-time neurosurgeons creates a situation where there is always availability for very specialized care,” Dr. Slimack offers. “For the most part, patients don’t need to travel out of the area
22
as they once did in the past. The most common neurological conditions that affect our patients can be treated right here at Marian.” As technology progresses, the need for the securing of advanced life-saving equipment becomes more imperative. Fortunately, the generous community and the philanthropic role of the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation offers vital support for this program.
Innovation in the operation room: The StealthStation™ When there is an emergent brain or nervous system need, Marian has sought to equip the operating rooms with the latest technology to ensure that the neuroscience program flourishes. Recently funded through the transfer of $1.4 million from the Marian Foundation, the StealthStation™ surgical navigation system was secured for the program. The StealthStation™ provides the latest hardware and software, improving visualization during
complex neurosurgery procedures. The equipment integrates a wide array of medical devices, thus creating 3-D tumor models with a touchscreen interface, allowing easy-to-use control. When asked about the importance of this system, Dr. Schreckinger praised the versatility of this device, relaying, “This equipment is incredibly versatile, and is used in both our brain tumor surgeries and our spine fusion surgeries. What makes it special is that it allows us to plan our incisions and to accurately localize the brain tumor and place the hardware.” The StealthStation™ surgical navigation system’s ease allows the entire surgical team not only to work more effectively, but also ensures a less invasive operation for the patient. Through the additional integration of the O-Arm Surgical Imaging System, neurosurgery on the Central Coast is bringing innovation to local patients. Investing in health care at Marian Regional Medical Center promotes positive patient outcomes, and these will only continue to increase alongside the growth of this vital program. In addition to the latest techniques of Marian’s neurosurgeons, philanthropy has helped advance this program with effective new technologies. To learn more about the surgical procedures offered by Drs. Slimack and Schreckinger, please call the Dignity Health Santa Maria Specialty Care Center at (805) 739-3863.
Taking aim at cancer Neurosurgery has also begun to have an impact on the healing work at Mission Hope Cancer Center with the recent introduction of stereotactic brain radiosurgery (SRS). Administered by a neurosurgeon and radiation oncologist, SRS is a focused radiotherapy technique that destroys certain types of brain tumors without the need for surgical removal.

Delivering joy
Local McDonald’s franchises continue significant meal donations Dan and Pamela Macal, owners of several local McDonald’s franchises, and their daughter Isabella have been donating and delivering food for the Marian Regional Medical Center staff every Tuesday and Wednesday since April 2020. When the first cases of COVID-19 reached the Central Coast, the Macal family wanted to find a way to help. “When the pandemic first started, my wife and I knew that the hospital would be overworked,” shares Dan. “We wanted the staff to know that there are people in the community that were thinking of them and grateful for what they do.” The Macals continue making their deliveries as the pandemic persists into 2021. Each week, hospital staff members look forward to the McDonald’s meals, and the medical center is immensely grateful for the Macal family’s ongoing generosity.

How funds are raised At the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation, a diverse group of donors support our work through a variety of ways—annual donations, grants, major gifts, planned and estate gifts, special events and more. We, and the patients we serve, are forever grateful for our donors’ support. Donations, both large and small, enable the medical center to acquire leading-edge medical technology, build and support health education, develop community outreach programs and provide vital patient care programs.

What does it mean to be a not-for-profit? While for-profit organizations distribute surplus revenue to shareholders or owners, not-for-profit organizations invest these earnings back into their organizations to further achieve their mission and goals. As a not-for-profit hospital, Marian Regional Medical Center reinvests profits back into the hospital and into our community by providing community benefits programs and charity care. Benefiting the cause at 100% Marian Regional Medical Center covers all Foundation operating costs, which means that donor funds are never used to pay for any administrative costs. Our organization is proud to make the commitment of 100% of all donations staying local and benefiting our community by going directly to where it is needed most—patient care, programs and services. 27
A lasting legacy of inspiration: Edward J. Murray III In November of 2020, Marian Regional Medical Center lost an extraordinary supporter and friend: Edward J. Murray III. In 2018, Ed received the medical center’s most esteemed honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in appreciation for his longstanding service to the community and his commitment to furthering Marian’s mission. Ed is also remembered for his many years of serving as the humorous emcee of the Marian Foundation’s Annual Dinner event.
28
In recent years, Ed became a strong advocate for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. In fact, he was instrumental in bringing Neuroboxing training to Santa Maria. Remembering him as a pillar of the community and a friend of the medical center, Marian remains grateful to Ed for his legacy of inspiration, and his spirit of giving to Santa Maria will forever be missed.
n Marian Regional Medical Center extends heartfelt gratitude to Trust Automation for the company’s recent $77,000 donation of PPE. Above, Trust Automation employees gather for a photo to commemorate their company’s recent support of Marian Regional Medical Center.

n When Kaeli Smith, a new mother of a five-month-old baby boy, found a lump in her breast, at first the lump seemed to be a normal side effect of nursing. However, just before her 30th birthday, Kaeli was diagnosed with the unimaginable—stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. Throughout Kaeli’s cancer journey, she has been filled with gratitude for the medical and support professionals at Mission Hope Cancer Center. Kaeli explains, “I feel like I’ve really been held up by the team at Mission Hope since my diagnosis. As hard as it is to be in treatment, the nurses and doctors make you feel at home.” In celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Santa Maria Police Department transformed one of their operational vehicles into a pink beacon of hope to honor all local breast cancer patients.
