FROM THE FOUNDER Hi, West 6th Readers!

Summer has a way of making everything feel a little lighter, a little brighter, and a lot more inspiring. This month's issue is filled with fresh ideas and colorful launches.

We're introducing beautiful new collections from Otea, Basic Goods, and Utopia Goods, each bringing its own point of view to the season. June also brought some fun moments in the design community — The Design Social Pop-Up in Utah, a live Trade Tales podcast taping with Business of Home and Four Hands, and Voutsa's joyful Pride Month launch.

If summer decorating is on your mind, you'll also find inspiration from poolside palettes and Florida-inspired schemes brightening our Instagram feed.

This month, we're especially thrilled to celebrate Otea Textiles as our Vendor of the Month. We can't wait for you to explore their newest collection. Read on for a quick interview with founder Cara George.

VENDOR OF THE MONTH

OTEA TEXTILES Otea Textiles is a wallpaper and fabric studio founded by Cara George, rooted in oldworld maximalism. Her fabrics and wallpapers draw on folk art, vintage kitsch, and architectural antiquity, inspired by her great-aunt Otea Pollera, who stayed behind in Italy when the rest of the family immigrated to the United States.

Describe your style in three words.

Refined, yet cheeky

(cont.) the things I love most about building OTEA is that I'm constantly learning. In any given week, I might find myself teaching myself a bit of web coding, navigating international tax regulations, practicing a new paintbrush technique, or styling a photoshoot. Every week feels like a crash course in something I never anticipated needing to know.

What made you want to start your line?

After years of working in interior design, collecting textiles from my travels, and learning more about my ancestry and lineage, OTEA felt less like a business idea and more like a calling. It arrived in a flash of clarity—one of those moments when disparate threads suddenly weave themselves into a single story. I like to imagine that OTEA knocked on my door from the beyond and said, “Hey there, here's something that combines everything you love most.” Thankfully, I answered. The rest is history.

I love the variety and the challenge of it all. It's endlessly stimulating, deeply rewarding, and completely exhausting :).

What inspires you?

My list of inspirations is both endless and ever-evolving, but there are a few sources I return to again and again. I find inspiration wandering the streets of Milan and peeking into the extraordinary entryways of apartment buildings, in wonderfully tacky Italian restaurants with their unapologetic charm, in the garden, and in the rich colors and materials of mid-century car interiors.

What does a typical day look like for you as a founder?

The reality is that no two days look exactly alike, but most days contain the same slices of the pie: creative work, business strategy, pragmatic (and sometimes boring, but necessary) operational tasks, marketing, and a healthy dose of the unexpected. One of WEST 6TH

OTEA TEXTILES I'm also endlessly drawn to the tension between high and low design—the way something refined can become more interesting when paired with something humble, unexpected, or even a little kitschy. There’s a bit of a punk rock spirit in that too: a willingness to ignore the socalled rules, trust your instincts, and create something that feels authentic rather than prescribed. Some of my favorite interiors are the ones that are technically "wrong" but emotionally right.

(cont.) narrative, inviting our audience to meet a new character or deepen their relationship with one they've already come to know. The patterns themselves are only part of the story; they're gateways into larger worlds filled with memory, place, family, and imagination.

More than anything, I'm inspired by places and objects that tell a story and reveal something about the people who created or loved them. The best spaces have personality, a point of view, and just enough irreverence to keep things interesting.

Is there a piece or project you've made that you're especially proud of?

I feel so incredibly proud of Collection II: La Maestra. The patterns, the colors, and the stories woven throughout the collection are deeply meaningful to me, and it has been such a joy to see others connect with them and embrace it so warmly.

What are you most excited about in the future?

I'm incredibly excited to weave even more inspiring storytelling into OTEA and into every way people experience the brand—from our website and newsletters to our blog, social media, and beyond. My hope is that OTEA becomes known for being both the story and the store.

More than anything, I wish she were here to see it—to see how her story, her spirit, and the memories I carry of her have been transformed into something that can live on and be shared with others.

LA MAESTRA OTEA Textiles

OTEA Textiles Collection II: La Maestra draws its name from the world of Velia Clare Pollera Vota — a woman whose life was woven from devotion, resilience, and quiet elegance, and sister to the brand's namesake, Otea. Hand-painted patterns reference the textures of her world: scratchy botanical brocade sofas, sensible striped aprons, fashionable costume jewelry, and the sound of her voice carrying “O Sole Mio” through the air.

The collection remains rooted in OTEA’s signature old-world maximalism. Rooted in memory and tradition, La Maestra marks a more intimate chapter for OTEA, carrying a family's history forward in pattern and color.

The Arcadia Collection takes its name from a celebration of artistry, colour, and the enduring beauty of nature. Rooted in the elaborate craftsmanship of the 19thcentury Arts & Crafts movement, the designs weave together perfectly petite prints and bold cascading blooms, painted by co-founder Bruce Slorach in watercolour and gouache.

Grounding cocoa browns and restorative earthy greens give way to deep jewel tones and sophisticated berry shades — colourways that honour nature's palette, moving traditional botanical prints into a contemporary context.
