Choosing A Trucking Company

Fuel Discounts: Some Get ‘Em, Some Don’t Fuel discounts and rebates are generally understood to be given by oil/ card companies to trucking companies who may or may not pass them to their lease/owner operators.

Fuel discounts and rebates, however, are usually calculated or adjusted quarterly or annually through volume. Depending on the size of the company, their negotiating abilities and fuel strategy differ, and companies can experience huge discount/ rebate differences.

A small company can maybe only manage a 5-10% discount, while larger volume purchasers 25-35%+. This huge disparity can make enormous differences to an operator’s bottom line… provided the company passes it on.

There are two primary strategies to address fuel cost issues for operators: fuel cap and fuel subsidy.

Fuel cap may be simple but

has its own management drawbacks (discussed in prior articles). The best overall strategy (in full disclosure) is a properly administered fuel subsidy.

Discounts on fuel purchases (before a subsidy) confuse comparisons. What is better? 5% discount with a 25 cent subsidy, or a 25% discount with an 18 cent subsidy? If fuel prices increase 25%, will the winner still be a winner? If the fuel prices drop 25%, will the advantage of the one change to the other?

In the formulas used to compare company contracts, fuel discounts are the most difficult to properly project. It actually would make much more sense for operators to have their fuel costs 100% subsidized by cents per mile rather than a partial discount plus cents per mile. If everyone paid pump price and then got a properly calculated subsidy based on miles, the con-

tracts would be much easier to chart and compare.

The difficulty comes when there is a combination of both subsidy and discount by both companies being compared (as described above). Since discounts are negotiated by volume (and volume can fluctuate) discounts cannot be scientifically predictable. Complicate this with fuel rebates that are provided by oil/card companies and things become even more confusing. Who gets a lump sum rebate? How will it be distributed? Who guarantees the company is accountable? Will that rebate always be there?

There are too many things the operator has no control over. The contract becomes too vulnerable to company policy and market fluctuations.

This is not to say that discounts are bad, or that somehow companies who discount fuel are un-ethical. Absolutely not! In fact, I have viewed some fuel discounts given by companies that (under full disclosure) show incredible generosity… in fact 100%.

Tire Safety Tips From Bendix Because there’s no such thing as taking too much care when it comes to tires, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC shared suggestions for National Tire Safety Week, and stressing the important role tire care plays in commercial vehicle highway safety.

Sponsored by the Rubber Manufacturers Association, National Tire Safety Week (June 1-7) is part of the association’s year-round efforts to raise awareness about the importance of keeping tires in good working condition.

“The importance of proper tire maintenance, regular inspection, and correct inflation can’t be overstated when it comes to safe and efficient commercial vehicle operation,” said Jon Intagliata, Product Manager for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) at Bendix.

“Tire pressure and upkeep have a direct impact on the

performance and longevity of tires themselves, and further-reaching effects in terms of fuel savings and fleet operating costs.”

Bendix, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, sees National Tire Safety Week as the ideal time to discuss both immediate and long-term steps that fleets and drivers can take to maximize tire safety.

Develop a Plan Fuel and tires are typically among fleets’ largest expenses, and the two are inextricably linked: Research by the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) has shown that tire underinflation by as little as 10 percent can result in a 1.5 percent drop in fuel economy, and underinflation by 20 percent results in a 30 percent reduction in tire life. The right equip-

ment and organizational planning can help address both.

Tire pressure monitoring systems, like the SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

by Bendix CVS for tractors and SmarTire Trailer-Link TPMS by Bendix CVS for trailer systems, can play a key role in this planning.

By offering real-time status information to drivers or maintenance technicians, a TPMS can warn fleets and drivers of tire-related problems before they pose a safety hazard. Downtime is reduced by eliminating the need for manual pressure checks.

Additionally, when SmarTire is linked with SafetyDirect from Bendix CVS – a Web portal that allows fleet owners to analyze real-time, wirelessly transmitted safety information – tire pressures, temperatures, and alerts are sent to the back office. This

means fleet maintenance teams can plan specific vehicle service in advance, while fleet managers can use the data to help shape a fleetwide tire strategy.

Pay Attention to Temperature “Tire pressure rises as tire temperature increases during regular operation or due to external conditions, presenting a challenge when maintaining pressure or alerting the driver to a potential problem,” Intagliata noted. “For that reason, Bendix engineered the TPMS technology to take tire temperature into account and compensate accordingly.”

SmarTire and SmarTire Trailer-Link continuously monitor both tire pressure and temperature at each wheel location, using sensors mounted on the wheel and inside the tire for direct and accurate measurement. These sensors provide the actual tire pressure and temperature information, as well as a deviation value that shows the amount of overinflation or underinflation from each tire’s cold inflation pressure (CIP). This deviation value automatically takes into account the increase in pressure due to temperature that naturally occurs as a tire is in operation and adjusts the system’s alerts accordingly. This compensation also allows the system to provide earlier warnings of a tire problem.

Address Low-Pressure Situations Quickly Daily pressure checks are a must, and low-pressure situations should be remedied the same day they are discovered. Tires driven while significantly underinflated experience increased stress and higher temperatures, which increases the risk of failure.

Industry statistics show that 90 percent of blowouts are caused by underinflation.

Properly maintained tires also optimize the performance of active safety systems such as the Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program full-stability system and Bendix Wingman Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology.

Prompt attention to pressure issues is crucial in today’s environment of Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA), since underinflated tires are vio-

I am sure it never will (completely) because there will always be recruiters trying to sell a 10% discount and a 10 cent subsidy, saying it’s much better than a 0% discount and a 25 cent subsidy*. They are counting on people not taking the time to do the actual math.

When comparing financial contracts math is critical. * There are several key features missing in this statement for the recruiter or anyone else to properly compare. b

from fuel cards, not even service charges.

The problem lies with comparing contracts. A company that can’t get more than 10% discount must be able to be compared to a company that can get (and gives) 20%.

This case may only be good enough for a snapshot not a projection. In business, an operator must be able to reasonably project expenses. Fuel discounts do not allow accurate projections.

I had a client who worked for a company that gave a good discount, and had done so for many years.

Suddenly they stopped the discount, no notice, no warning of any sort. The client was being strangled by their fuel costs. Their subsidy never changed because it was calculated by an index exclusive of discounts. Not every situation is as quick as this… sometimes discounts are reduced slowly.

Truckers’ Good Mood Picks Up Where It Left Off There’s no denying it: The trucking industry in Ontario is returning to health as carriers report successively stronger freight and rate counts while projecting more optimism than they have in over half a decade. Undoubtedly, Ontario’s diversified trucking industry is reflecting the increased stability and economic growth elsewhere, specifically south of the border and inter-provincially.

In the Ontario Trucking Association’s second quarter 2014 survey of business conditions for the bellwether sector, carriers picked-up right where they left off last time – in what was a very positive 1Q14 survey – expressing even higher unprecedented levels of business improvement in all four sectors monitored

by OTA (Intra-Ontario, inter-provincial, southbound US, northbound

US). Moreover, for the second straight quarter, carriers indicate that rates are keeping pace with volume increases – something of a rarity since the 2008 recession.

Freight Volumes After surprisingly strong results last quarter (during what’s supposed to be a slow freight season), reported freight volumes in the 2Q14 survey were even better as carriers headed towards the spring-summer “new peak” shipping season.

Sixty-five percent of carriers said southbound freight volumes improved in the previous three months – the highest percentage ever recorded since OTA started the survey in 2008 and four times higher than the number of carriers who indicated improvements this time last year. It was also a 17-point increase over last quarter’s record

high. Remarkably, not one respondent reported that volumes fell.

After remaining flat in the last survey, carriers who indicated that intraprovincial volume had increased jumped to 59% — the second highest level recorded. Sixty-two percent of carriers saw a surge in U.S. northbound lanes – a rate unmatched since 2011 and 18% higher than last quarter. Domestically, the number of carriers who suggested inter-Ontario freight had increased remained at 41%, which is still double the number this time last year.

However, carriers clearly expect Ontario lanes to start catching up at some point in 2014. Sixty-three percent of carriers predict volume escalation within provincial lanes over the next six months – a four-year high. Not that they think the rest of Can-

ada or U.S. exports will let up: Intra-provincially, 77% of carriers expect volumes to keep climbing – a third more than who felt the same way last quarter. Southbound, 73% anticipate growth – a whopping 19-point increase from the last survey and highest level ever recorded by OTA. Amazingly, not one carrier respondent believed volumes would retreat in any of these three sectors over the next six months. The 61% who were positive about northbound U.S. business was the highest level since early 2010.

Rates It appears that last survey’s robust characterization about the rate environment was not an anomaly. In fact, after bearish reports in most quarters since the recession, carriers now report unprecedented back-toback rate progression.

The number of carriers indicating increases to US southbound rates skyrocketed to 62% — more than double the previous all-time high of 29% last quarter and a far cry from the single-digit grades between 2008-2010. Car-

Page T-5 riers who felt rates in all other lanes also improved significantly q-q: InterOntario 23% to 31% (all all-time high); Intra-provincial 47% (matching high in 3Q11); and northbound US from 32% to 41%.

Capacity Reflexively, the ripple of near universal volume increases brings with it ever-tighter capacity.

There’s more indication that companies want to add drivers and ownerops (58%), but just where those drivers will come from remains in question as the driver shortage will only get more acute as economic activity and freight continues to pick up. Rumbling tectonic plates underlying the trucking labour market

are further shaking the supply balance as 58% of carriers reported capacity contraction – nearly triple the reports from the 2Q13 survey and, once more, the highest number of carriers OTA has ever recorded. Only 22% report flat capacity – the lowest level so far. Looking ahead, 46% expect further tightening – 10 points higher than last quarter and about double this time last year.

While tightening capacity is starting to lead to a few demands for longerterm contacts, the pace that shippers prefer to lockin contracts is still remarkably slow considering the current environment. Despite a capacity crunch and higher transportation costs Continued on page T-7

A new whistleblower service was recently launched that provides a way for Lower Mainland container truckers to voice concerns about such things as trucking company compliance with Joint Action Plan remuneration rates, truck licensing or driver harassment.

The service is a collaborative effort by Port Metro Vancouver and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Those wishing to file a report can do so online, via a 24/7 telephone service, by fax or by mail. The 1-877-713-5109 toll-free telephone service, called Drayage ConfidenceLine, is administered by an independent, third-party organization that will forward drivers’ concerns to the appropriate agency for follow-up.

Those concerns involving driver remuneration will be investigated by the

Container Dispute Resolution Program and, where necessary, disciplinary measures will be taken.

Trucking companies are reminded that they must fully comply with the terms of the action plan and with all aspects of their License Agreements with Port Metro Vancouver, in order to play their part in ensuring the port remains stable and competitive. To that end, targeted, expedited audits will take place in the coming weeks to ensure employers are paying truckers according to the action plan. Port Metro Vancouver will respond to instances of non-compliance with penalties where necessary, and advises that future port access could be at risk for any company whose actions are placing the long-term, stable operation of the port in jeopardy.

“The Province is committed to working with all

parties to implement the Joint Action Plan.” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “This reporting program provides a mechanism for driver complaints to be dealt with effectively and I’m confident that penalties will be issued accordingly. It is vital that Port Metro Vancouver operations continue in a smooth and efficient manner to keep our economy running and goods moving across the country.”

“This initiative is one of the many steps being taken as a part of the Joint Action Plan to solve long-standing problems in the container trucking sector,” said Peter Xotta, Vice President, Planning and Operations for Port Metro Vancouver.

“Truckers should feel confident that their concerns are being heard and acted upon.”

The service is offered in English and Punjabi and callers may remain anonymous if they so choose.

Carrier Costs As the competition between carriers to keep

crossed the 5% mark.

About half of carriers indicated higher owner-op rates with about 50% of that in the 5%-range.

The cost of fuel expectedly came down since this year’s brutal winter ended

(only 12% reported fuel cost hikes of 15% or more, compared to 38% who said so in 1Q14). Still, three in four carriers report overall fuel price increases in the 5-10% range. The relatively relaxed fuel price

This patented, planetary traction drive will be integrated into a variety of power paths to optimize the transmission assembly, significantly reducing fuel consumption and maximizing performance.

Developed through a strategic licensing relationship with Fallbrook Technologies Inc., this product can replace the torque converter in some transmission configurations to decouple engine speed from the vehicle’s travel or working speed. Dana will also implement VariGlide technology in a premium configuration optimized to supply further fuel efficiency and productivity gains in select Spicer powershift transmissions.

You Say Tomato; We Say TomAuto: Ford And Heinz Collaborate It might seem that tomatoes and cars have nothing in common. But researchers at Ford Motor Company and H.J. Heinz Company see the possibility of an innovative union.

Researchers at Ford and Heinz are investigating the use of tomato fibers in developing sustainable, composite materials for use in vehicle manufacturing. Specifically, dried tomato skins could become the wiring brackets in a Ford vehicle or the storage bin a Ford customer uses to hold coins and other small objects.

“We are exploring whether this food processing byproduct makes sense for an automotive application,” said Ellen Lee, plastics research technical specialist for Ford. “Our goal is to develop a strong, lightweight material that meets our vehicle requirements, while at the

same time reducing our overall environmental impact.”

Nearly two years ago, Ford began collaborating with Heinz, The CocaCola Company, Nike Inc. and Procter & Gamble to accelerate development of a 100 percent plant-based plastic to be used to make everything from fabric to packaging and with a lower environmental impact than petroleum-based packaging materials currently in use.

At Heinz, researchers were looking for innovative ways to recycle and repurpose peels, stems and seeds from the more than two million tons of tomatoes the company uses annually to produce its best-selling product: Heinz Ketchup. Leaders at Heinz turned to Ford.

“We are delighted that the technology has been validated,” said Vidhu Nagpal, Associate Di-

rector, Packaging R&D for Heinz. “Although we are in the very early stages of research, and many questions remain, we are excited about the possibilities this could produce for both Heinz and Ford, and the advancement of sustainable 100% plant-based plastics.”

In recent years, Ford has increased its use of recycled nonmetal and biobased materials. AMTA To Discuss Top Transportation Issues Innovative and ground-breaking are the terms being used to describe a June 9 meeting convened by AMTA that brought together top-level representatives from Alberta Transportation and Alberta Justice to discuss current and long-term initiatives that will bolster industry safety and compliance.

“Many of the issues that form AMTA’s safety and training agenda require action by more than one government department,” said Richard Warnock, Interim President and CEO, AMTA. “It was simply prudent to bring together the top people from government departments that influence how our industry is regulated and how safety programs are delivered.”

“Our goal is to step-up communication between AMTA and government stakeholders so our members can more effectively

service our customers the province’s shippers and consumers - while operating in a safe manner,” said Warnock.

The discussion items were sweeping and touched on major AMTA service delivery areas including: regulatory affairs, injury reduction and training as well as government-industry partnerships.

The agenda for the day-long meeting encompassed everything from compliance issues through to industry image. A portion of the day was devoted to AMTA’s key lobby items, such as hours of service, electronic recording devices, automated permit systems, and entry level Class 1 driver training.

The group identified increased driver training, daily trip inspections and fatigue management as actions items. Going forward, the participants agreed

to meet annually to continue to identify action items that support their shared goal of safer roads in Alberta.

Format Changes For NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race At Eldora Speedway NASCAR recently announced a series of format enhancements to the second annual NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway, scheduled for July 23.

Among the enhancements, aimed to bolster the emphasis on both driver skill and team strategy, are: • Pit stops during competition cautions are now optional, whereas they were mandatory in last year’s inaugural event.

• Each qualifying race will now be 10 laps each.

Last year, each race was eight laps.

• A random draw will determine qualifying order. Last year, practice

speeds dictated the qualifying order.

• Owner points will be awarded to the top five team owners whose trucks do not transfer to the main feature. Last season, teams that did not advance to the main feature did not earn owner points.

AMTA Road Knight Rob Wells Named Volvo-CTA Driver Of The Year Robert Wells – dedicated Albertan truck driver, family man, community leader, and superhero to those who know him – was recently named the 2013 national Volvo Canada/Canadian Trucking Alliance Driver of the Year.

Wells, a driver for Bison Transport who lives in Calgary, was officially handed the award and honoured with the title at the recent Alberta Motor Transport Association’s annual general meeting. Wells also served on the 2011-2012 AMTA Road Knights team, where he travelled the province educating students about traffic safety and careers in the trucking industry.

The winner of the national award is selected from existing recipients of the Volvo Truck Driver of the Year in each of the Canadian provinces. The award is presented annually to a Canadian professional transport driver who

holds a collision-free driving record, demonstrates a high level of professionalism both on and off the road and demonstrates courtesy within the industry and the public arena.

Wells, 63, is a 40-year veteran of the trucking industry, spending his last 15 years with Bison as both a company driver and lease operator. He has logged about 6-million collision-free miles in his career.

During that time he has racked up several safe driving awards at the companies he’s worked for. More recently at Bison, Wells has trained and mentored new drivers as an in-cab instructor and has served on Bison’s driver advisory board, where he makes recommendations to the company on driver issues, equipment and safety.

Although he loves trucking, Wells’ greatest passion is his family – his wife Marlene, his five chil-

dren, 13 grandkids and five great-grandkids – who see first-hand Wells’ strength and dedication. Several years ago Wells was diagnosed with cancer. Instead of taking a break and giving up his seat, he continued to work throughout his chemo treatments and other therapies and eventually beat the disease.

“He is a man made of steel and accomplished what few other men could,” says Bison’s Garth Pitzel, Director of Safety and Driver Development.

“Diligent, ethical, moral and valiant are just a few words to describe Rob. I never met a driver with more commitment than this man.”

Throughout his life, Wells has been extremely active in the community.

He’s been involved with his local Cub Scouts and is a long-time member of the Lion’s Club in Calgary, where he has received many accolades. He has

also assisted several charities, including raising funds to supply villages in South Africa.

Ltd. Volvo Trucks Canada and BCTA sponsor the provincial Driver of the Year award annually to recognize and promote safe driving among professional drivers. In addition to excellent driving records, award winners have often distinguished themselves through service to their communities and acts of bravery.

In 1977, Dave Pringle approached Dick Bandstra for a job and began working with Smithers Transport (the predecessor to Bandstra Transportation).

Due to prior experience in forestry, Dave began work as a logging truck driver and moved on to operating lowbeds when Smithers Transport changed its business focus.

Over the next several decades, Dave became the “go-to guy” for any difficult haul or transport to off-the-map locations.

Much of Dave’s time has been spent in northern BC, hauling in and out of the many mining projects that dot the northwest. He was frequently the first semi unit to reach many of the mine sites, including diamond drill loads for various exploration companies, and he was always requested for the job.

In the years that Dave has worked with Bandstra Transportation, he

says CTA President David Bradley. “It is drivers like Robert that make this industry proud and show Canadians just how great trucking is.” b has never had an at-fault accident. He has always been safety-conscious and noted on many occasions when working on remote jobs that he was his own “safety committee,” because if he didn’t remain safe, he may not be coming home.

Dave has been an informal driver trainer at Bandstra, passing on a wealth of knowledge to other drivers, especially those who spend their time up north hauling sensitive equipment and loads. He has also provided expertise to mining sites regarding what trucks could or could not do in very difficult northern terrain.

Despite all of his hours and dedication to the job, Dave also remained very active in his church and with his family.

In his nomination, Phil Bandstra referred to Dave as an exceptional driver committed to excellence – a consummate professional and extremely nice person. Customers have called Dave an amazing and versatile person who never complains and never loses his smile regardless of how difficult or dirty the job may be. Dave is the epitome of a great professional driver, an excellent representative for Bandstra Transportation, and an outstanding role model for the trucking industry as a whole.

Between The Rails Fuel Tank For Freightliner M2 106 Freightliner Trucks recently announced that a between-the-rails fuel tank is available as an option for its Freightliner M2 106 vehicles.

Ideal for ambulance configurations, the new option places a 40 gallon steel fuel tank between the rails at the end of the frame. This allows emergency trucks to have more packaging options such as increased diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) capacity and additional batteries while still maintaining a clear

back of cab.

The between-the-rails position also enhances vehicle stability with weight distribution in the rear, resulting in a smoother ride and improved overall vehicle driving dynamics.

The TPMS system monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on the vehicle in real time and will warn the operator of potential problems. The system helps operators keep tires properly inflated, which improves fuel economy and reduces tire wear.
