Bendix Supports Operation Safe Driver Through Fleet Solutions And Advanced Technology Through its suite of active and passive safety systems, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems helps to enhance the safety of today’s commercial vehicles, yet it reinforces the point that no technology replaces the need for skilled drivers practicing safe driving habits on our highways. According to the most recent FMCSA Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts report, more than 4,100 people died in large truck and bus crashes in the U.S. in 2012.

The Bendix Brake Training School, one of the industry’s longest-running training programs, has educated more than 250,000 students since its inception. The three-day program takes a comprehensive approach to the entire range of foundation and air brake system components, and provides in-depth coverage of advanced safety solutions.

Additionally, more than 24,000 students have enrolled in the Bendix OnLine Brake School at www. brake-school.com since its launch in March 2013. The free on-line curriculum has become an essential part of the training program for many fleets across North America. The curriculum, available 24/7/365, covers all aspects of electronics and air brake maintenance, including courses on lane departure warning systems, air compressors, tire pressure monitoring systems, wheel-end maintenance, and radar alignment for active safety systems. Course availability is always growing to meet the varied needs of the commercial vehicle industry.

Page T-3 Bendix also supports the goals of Operation Safe Driver by delivering technologies that assist safe vehicle operation, such as Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program full-stability system, Bendix Wingman Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology, and AutoVue Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System from Bendix CVS. Next year, Bendix will launch the next generation of its active safety systems in North America, introducing stationary vehicle braking and other advances to the market as well as improving the performance of its existing systems through stronger, deeper integration and upgraded components.

Bendix ESP helps address both roll and directional instability through sensors that recognize and mitigate conditions that could lead to rollover and loss-of-control. Wingman Advanced uses a radar sensor mounted to the front of a vehicle to provide active cruise control with braking features, along with collision mitigation technology that delivers both warnings and active inter-

ventions to help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or at least help reduce their severity. The AutoVue LDW system uses a camera with a wide field of view to track visible lane markings and detects when the vehicle begins to drift toward an unintended lane change.

Bendix wheel-end safety solutions that meet and exceed RSD standards for shorter stops include the higher-performing version of its Extended Service drum brake (Bendix ES brakes) and the Bendix ADB22X air disc brake.

Both are produced by Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC, a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC. Andersky noted that all Bendix safety systems – both active braking and warning-only technologies – are designed to supplement safe driving practices and are not intended to enable or encourage drivers to drive more aggressively.

Mack mDRIVE Transmission Now Standard On The Mack Pinnacle Model The Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission (AMT) is now standard on the Mack Pinnacle highway model, offering increased fuel efficiency, productivity and safety to even more Mack customers. The mDRIVE is controlled through a dashmounted shift pad with an integrated display to indicate the current gear.

The Mack Co-Pilot driver display, located in the center of the instrument panel, displays the mDRIVE’s status, including the number of upshifts or downshifts available, the current gear and the current operating

mode.

The mDRIVE, a key component of Mack’s integrated powertrains, is designed to work seamlessly with Mack MP series engines. When combined with a Mack Pedigree Powertrain, the mDRIVE can boost fuel efficiency by up to 1.5 percent compared to a standard transmission.

For applications where fuel economy is a priority, Pinnacle models can be spec’d with the Super Econodyne integrated powertrain package. Featuring the Mack MP7 or Mack MP8 engine, mDRIVE, proprietary drive axles and Mack’s custom software, the Super Econodyne package maximizes efficiency without sacrificing performance. When compared to similarly spec’d vehicles, the MP7 Super Econodyne and MP8 Super Econodyne provide fuel economy improvements of up to 4 percent and 3.5 percent respectively.

A key feature of the Super Econodyne package is “down speeding” of the engine. “Down speeding” reduces engine rpm by more than 200 rpm at a highway speed of 65 mph, cruising at 1160 rpm versus 1380 rpm. This decrease in engine rpm reduces fuel consumption, with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. b

New IMT 32 TM Articulating Crane Offers More Productivity Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT), an Oshkosh Corporation company (NYSE:OSK), has introduced the 32 tm crane to its lineup of articulating cranes ranging from 2.5 to 80 tm. The 32/222 crane is designed for superior operator productivity with unique lift and reach capabilities requested by customers.

The excellent strength and reach of the IMT 32 tm crane, along with high working speed and precision control, maximize operator efficiency. Rated 222,050 foot-pounds, the crane features a maximum lifting capacity of 15,058 pounds (6,830 kilograms) at a radius of 14 feet 9 inches (4.5 meters). The crane offers one of the industry’s longest horizontal reaches in the 30 tm range: 69 feet 7 inches (21.2 meters) with eight hydraulic extensions.

ing features of the 32 tm articulating crane include the dual-power plus link-arm system, 15-degree overbending, continuous rotation and a standard radio remote control. The crane comes standard with the RCL (rated capacity limiter) 5300 system to monitor load moment, operation and function.

Ultra-high tensile steel construction of the hexagonal boom provides a superior lift-to-weight

ratio, high lifting capacity at long reaches and increased payload capabilities. Required mounting space has been minimized, providing more space on the truck body and additional truck configuration possibilities.

The dual-power plus link-arm system found on the 32 tm articulating crane: • Offers the best lifting capacities under all conditions, • Provides precise and regular movements in the entire working area, • Is particularly wellsuited for long reaches and lifting in high positions with demanding equipment (such as fly-jib and winch), • Works particularly well with the stretch boom system at any height and any reach.

“Overbending” means the working area between the main boom and the jib is no less than 195 degrees. Overbending offers greater flexibility when working through narrow passages and under overhead obstructions; the ability to lift maximum loads in all

boom positions; and a lower total height when the crane is stowed on the truck body.

The RCL system monitors the crane’s load moment, operation and function. In an overload situation, the system warns the operator and interrupts the distribution of oil for crane functions, while allowing functions that reduce load moment to remain operational. The RCL 5300 cooperates with the user and compensates when the RCL senses a situation requiring intervention.

Additional features of the 32 tm crane include an internal hose routing system for hose protection, multiple stabilizer options and an innovative, flexible stow bracket design that secures boom for transportation but does not allow bracket damage.

The 32 tm crane joins the complete lineup of IMT articulating cranes ranging from the 2.5 tm (18,085 foot-pound) model to the 80 tm (516,440 foot-pound) model.

Major Hurdle Cleared For Allowing In-Transit Shipments The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is hailing the fact that a key plank in the Canada-US Beyond the Border (BTB) Action Plan – the ability for carriers from both countries to conduct in-transit shipments through the other country – is close to being achieved.

The Alliance, a federation of the provincial trucking associations representing over 4,500 trucking companies from across Canada, has been involved in intense discussions with Canadian and US government officials and the American Trucking Associations in an attempt to break a log-jam that threatened to scupper any prospect of intransit moves in either country. Last spring, the Canadian and U.S. customs agencies appeared to reach a harmonization agreement on the data required for domestic goods transiting through the other country, but then went offside when US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) subsequently insisted that the “value” of the in-transit goods remain on the list of required data elements for

electronic submission, which CTA argued, would be practically impossible for carriers to provide for what is a domestic shipment.

For decades it had been common practice for Canadian carriers moving loads say from Toronto to Calgary to transit through the United States as opposed to crossing the top of the Lakehead in Northern Ontario in order to take advantage of the superior multi-lane divided interstate highways which offer safer conditions, less wear and tear on vehicles, access to rest stops, etc. Since the goods were not entering the U.S. for consumption or being offloaded or stored, they could enter with minimal documentation.

US carriers made similar in-transit moves taking Canadian highways between points like Buffalo, NY and Detroit, MI. However, U.S. changes to the cross border process in the aftermath of 9/11 led to in-transit shipments treated as international loads, subject to full documentation, including the problematic requirement for “value data,” effectively ending in-transit shipments

through the U.S. for Canadian carriers. Canada did not adopt the US approach and therefore US in-transit shipments were able to continue, creating an uneven playing field.

In meetings last week, CBP accepted a CTA proposal to allow Canadian carriers who are not able to provide a value for the shipments to designate a default value of $95,000.00 to the shipment – a figure that is based on contract of carriage rules where for claims purposes a default value is based on $2/pound for 45,000 pound load.

Value and estimated value of goods will remain a CBP requirement (and must be provided) where it is obtainable by the carrier. However, in cases where it is not obtainable, CBP has agreed that the default value will be acceptable. Additionally, if the goods are not properly repatriated back to Canada, the existing process – where a penalty will be issued based on the declared value of the load, whether it is actual, estimated or default – remains in place.

NASCAR XFINITY Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series To Incorporate Updates In 2015 NASCAR recently announced three key enhancements in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the 2015 season.

The updates include: • Beginning next season, the qualifying rule for the NASCAR XFINITY Series (currently the NASCAR Nationwide Series) and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will resemble that of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and will emphasize speed.

• The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series maximum starting field will be set at 32 trucks.

• The drivers’ last name will be featured on the back window of each series’ cars and trucks, helping fans to better identify the drivers.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will follow the same procedure for positions 1-27.

In the XFINITY Series, the next six positions will first be assigned to the highest ranking cars in owner points that have attempted all of the races, have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and have entered the event by the posted entry deadline. The final starting posi-

tion will be awarded to the most recent eligible past champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then a seventh car will make the field based upon owner points.

In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the next four positions will first be assigned to the highest ranking trucks in owner points that have attempted all of the races, have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and have entered the event by the posted entry deadline. The final starting position will be awarded to the most recent eligible past champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then a fifth truck will make the field based upon owner points.

Prior to this enhancement, the top 30 cars and top 25 trucks in owner points in each series, respectively, were guaranteed a starting spot in each of those series’ events.

mum of seven cars and five trucks will be locked into a given NASCAR XFINITY Series or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, respectively.

If a qualifying session is cancelled because of inclement weather, each series’ field will be set per the rule book with starting lineups determined by practice speeds.

Maximum Field Set At 32 Trucks For NASCAR Camping World Truck Series As NASCAR continues to encourage and reward hard racing, help solidify and build the ownership base, add even more drama and intrigue to the race weekend and most importantly, provide fans the best competition possible, the maximum starting field for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be set at 32 trucks starting in 2015, as opposed to the 36-truck field in previous years.

Daimler Sets Commercial Vehicle Industry Record For Order Intake Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) recently announced vehicle order intake for Class 6 – 8 NAFTA and exports markets reached 31,304 units in the month of October. The order figure represents the single largest order month on record for DTNA, as well as sets the new industry benchmark in terms of order intake in a onemonth period.

In October, month over month industry orders were up 61.2 percent, with DTNA’s growth of 116.9 percent. DTNA’s order share was 51.9 percent of the industry total of 60,307 units according to the monthly preliminary order report issued by ACT Research Co. (ACT). Numerous large fleet orders

Allison Announces Total Electrification Option For Components Used With Its H 40/50 EP System Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ALSN) recently announced availability of a new option to fully electrify components used with its H 40/50 EP hybrid propulsion system for transit buses and coaches.

Co-developed with Vanner Inc., Increased Accessory Power II (IAP II) is a customizable electric distribution platform that provides power from the hybrid system to accessory components such as electric air conditioning, electric air compressors and power steering systems. IAP II includes either a Single or Dual Hybrid Beltless Alternator (HBA).

“Allison’s standard H 40/50 EP system typically improves fuel economy 20-30 percent over standard diesel buses,” said Michael G. Headly, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Service for Allison Trans-

mission. “When using a Vanner HBA with our system, a number of transit agencies in the U.S. have reported an additional average fuel economy improvement of 16 percent, for a total improvement of 36 percent or more.”

In addition to improving fuel economy, IAP II has also demonstrated these benefits: • Allows accessories to operate at the most efficient speeds, improving energy management by reducing parasitic loads.

• Increases brake responsiveness by building air brake pressure faster than a conventional engine-driven pump.

• Enables faster cabin cooling, without straining the engine or burning unnecessary fuel by running engines at high idle.

IAP II builds on the

foundation of Allison’s parallel hybrid propulsion system, as well as its release with the Vanner HBA and IAP I. Like IAP I, IAP II utilizes a high voltage distribution module (HVDM) for intelligent control of high voltage electrical power and an HBA (or dual HBAs) for DC to DC conversion of high voltage to 24 DC. However, IAP II adds an inverter that converts high voltage DC to high voltage AC that can power electric air conditioning, electric air compressor and power steering, while simultaneously eliminating the cost and need for the air conditioning system’s integral inverter.

“Full electrification of a hybrid bus is the single most advantageous option a transit authority can realize that will improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and lower maintenance costs,” said Steve Funk, President of

Vanner. “The Allison H 40/50 EP hybrid already has a proven track record as a reliable sustainability solution. IAP II improves on the hybrid’s efficiency by distributing the hybrid power throughout the entire bus.”

The IAP II system is available in standard and articulated bus applications. All components will be delivered to OEMs on a pre-assembled and prewired rack. The racked solution enables customers to specify only those electrified components that they demand, while also offering better troubleshooting and easier maintenance than a boxed or individually sourced solution. Vanner will coordinate warranties for the IAP II ‘racked’ components.

Since 2003, Allison has delivered over 6,500 hybrid propulsion systems which have accumulated nearly 650 million miles, saving over 34 million gallons of fuel and preventing 340 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. It is anticipated that IAP II will offer even further fuel efficiency improvements. b

Federal Environment Minister, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, has announced Canada’s intention to develop proposed regulations to further reduce GHG emissions from on-road heavy-duty vehicles and engines for post2018 model years.

The official version of the Notice of Intent will be published in a forthcoming edition of the Canada Gazette Part I The notice of intent is not expected to contain significant technical details, as the US EPA is not expected to publish its notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) until the spring of 2015.

(Historically, the practice regarding North American vehicle emission standards has been for the EPA NPRM to set the basis for future consultations between Environment Canada and regulated parties).

“The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) would encourage the Government of Canada and their provincial partners to work with our sector to attain the goals of reduced greenhouse gas emissions in both an effective and efficient manner,’ said CTA senior VP Stephen Laskowski.

“CTA is hopeful this round of regulatory consultation will not only explore the viability and market readiness of new technologies but force provincial governments to review and remove regulatory barriers preventing the use of GHG emission reducing technologies.”

Over the coming months, CTA will be attempting to work with governments, manufacturers and industry to identify the soundest technological and regulatory path to achieving fuel efficiency improvements for all sectors of the trucking industry. b

Goodyear Converts Waste From Rice Harvest To Fuel-Efficient Tire Treads Rice husk waste once headed for landfills is now helping The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company produce fuelefficient tires. Goodyear recently announced it will utilize ash left over from the burning of rice husks to produce electricity as an environmentally friendly source of silica for use in its tires.

The company has tested silica derived from rice husk ash over the past two years at its Innovation Centre and found its impact on tire performance to be equal to traditional sources.

Goodyear is negotiating with potential suppliers to purchase rice husk ash silica for use in its tires.

“The use of rice husk ash will provide Goodyear an alternative source of silica while helping reduce the amount of rice husk waste being landfilled,” said Joseph Zekoski, Interim Chief Technical

Officer. “This illustrates Goodyear’s commitment to innovation and to the environment.”

Truckers Third Most Difficult Job To Fill

Driver turnover in the truckload sector is worsening, according to recently released figures, according to the American Trucking Associations.

Truckload driver turnover at fleets doing more than $30 million in business annually rose 11 percent in the second quarter of the year from the first quarter to an annual rate of 103%, according to recently released figures from the ATA. This is its highest level since the third quarter of 2012 and four percentage points above a year earlier.

Turnover at small truck-

load fleets, those with less than $30 million revenue, surged 16 points from the previous quarter to 94%, the highest level since the third quarter of 2012 and 12 percentage points more than during the same time in 2013.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the shortage is “as bad as ever and is expected to get worse in the near term,” as freight volumes continue to grow.

“These turnover rates show that the shortage is acute,” he said, “and if the freight economy continues to grow, it will worsen very

quickly.”

The turnover at LTL fleets was much lower, coming in at just 11% annually, one percentage point than in the first quarter. However, there are indications even LTLs and private fleets are beginning to feel the impact of the shortage as well.

Meanwhile, as reported by Heavy Duty Trucking, the American Staffing Association’s new Skills Gap Index, which tracks the hardest to fill occupations in the U.S., ranks truck drivers as the third most difficult, behind occupational therapists and physical therapists.

“The ASA Skills Gap Index quantifies the severity of the skills shortage in America,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA President and Chief Executive Officer. “These new U.S. skills gap data will be used by economists, journalists, government officials, and, most important, staffing firms as they work with clients to develop workforce solutions and devise effective talent acquisition strategies.” b

AMTA Driving Simulators Advance Training For Fleets Of All Sizes Commercial truck drivers, and the fleets that employ them, have a great deal to look forward to in 2015. AMTA has purchased two truck driving simulator machines and will offer driver training on the equipment early next year “Large carriers recognize how invaluable simulators are for training new hires and fine-tuning the skills of experienced drivers,” says Brian Bell, Vice President, Operations.

“The price barrier meant that access to these simulators was often not an affordable option for smaller

fleets and independent drivers.”

A truck driving simulator replicates the driving compartment of a typical truck and simulates reallife driving situations encountered by drivers. The replicated driving situations range from challenging road conditions and collisions through to encounters with wildlife.

NB Power To Expand Network With A New Line And Substation To Houlton, Maine Houlton Water Co., in northern Maine, is turning to NB Power for a lowpriced, reliable, and secure transmission path for energy through a new international interconnect joining Woodstock and Houlton, Maine.

The company, a consumer-owned electric, water, and wastewater utility based in Houlton, has signed an agreement with NB Power to build a 25 km, 138 kV transmission line and substation. Construction will begin once regulatory approvals have been received. The project will be funded by Houlton Water Co. and final costs will be determined when environmental, engineering and design work is complete.
