Freightliner Introduces Suite Of Value-Added Options Freightliner Trucks recently announced several new value-added option packages specifically geared toward its M2 106 medium duty trucks, featuring Allison’s new FuelSense product paired with the Cummins ISB6.7.

Titan Trailers Expands Thinwall Line Of Trailers With the latest generation of their aluminum moving-floor trailer designed for aggregate and road building applications, Titan Trailers Inc. is well positioned to become a significant player in the EU transportation industry.

from a customer who is replacing some of their older tippers, while complementing their fleet with the newest generation of Titans to increase their capacity.

“Level unloading offers a great improvement in jobsite safety for haulers and contractors,” says Mike. “A Titan adds reliability and durability for hauling all types of gravel, stone, soil and tarmac.”

Titan also demonstrated how the moving floor concept is especially suited to paving applications. As the unloader system walks the load off the trailer, the hot mat is dispensed evenly and avoids segregation of the material without remixing.

The original THINWALL Titan Trailers are distinguished by their innovative THINWALL body construction, developed in the mid-1990s. The horizontal hollow-core smoothwall panels of extruded aluminum have been widely adopted in North America for hauling a wide range of bulk commodities, from farm goods to “extreme duty” scrap metals. Being the lightest and the most robust trailer in the heavy duty marketplace, only THINWALL trailers feature sidewalls that are assembled longitudinally and double machine-welded, inside and out, in a patented Titan process.

The new aggregate trailer introduces a redesigned top panel which integrates the trailer’s top rail. Its sloped tailgate is operated by a hydraulic lift. The VFloor system is hot tarmac compatible and is resistant to high temperatures.

It utilizes flat-top slats for easier clean-outs as well as increased versatility to accommodate additional types of cargo. Standard models are equipped with SAF axles and suspensions.

A local focus for service The UK production and service facility now supports a fleet numbering

over 300 trailers in service and now claims its position as the UK’s preferred trailer for heavy-duty payloads.

Brian Yuill, Managing Director of Yuill & Dodds Ltd., was among the first to bring Titan into a large fleet operation. “I had some reservations at first,” he said, “because the construction was radically different from any other waste trailer. But I learned quickly that it was a far better design than any other traditional type of trailer that is available in the marketplace.”

Titan has been refining its production system to maintain the integrity of its patents and quality standards while incorporating local sources for many components. By doing final assembly in Middlesbor-

ough, it keeps the trailers cost-competitive.

THINWALL components and body fittings are produced in Canada and then packaged for shipment to the UK. The Middlesborough facility completes assembly with locally sourced running gear, tires and components. This puts Titan in position to serve a global market, able to export its unique product anywhere while providing employment, investment and strong customer service in the local markets.

Choosing a Trucking Company:

The First Step To Levelling The Playing Field I’ve been asked many times what the most controversial term in a lease operator contract is. What is the one term that, if changed or corrected, would make the company to company comparisons more accurate and provide the most dramatic leverage to the plight of lease operators? Would it be licensing? Insurance?

Mileage rate? Load/unload consideration? Or maybe wait times? Which contract term, if universally accepted by all companies, would truly level the playing field in the trucking industry?

The answer is to provide a consistent and realistic fuel surcharge system.

If every company provided a fuel cap, comparing companies would be easy and would insulate operator fuel costs from market fuel price fluctuations (the

way they should be). However, most companies use a fuel surcharge system.

In the 1990s, the industry had neither a cap nor surcharge because the price of oil had been $15-20 a barrel for over a decade.

Shipper/receivers rejected any notion of a fuel surcharge. It was irrelevant in the atmosphere of stable prices (out of sight out of mind). But then oil demand started to rise as supply started to squeeze. All eyes started turning to oil as Operation Desert Storm liberated Kuwait from Saddam Hussein.

Even then, it took nearly a decade for shippers to finally accept fuel surcharges as the norm and is firmly embedded in all freight rates today.

But what happened within lease operator contracts? What happened

to operators as fuel prices road a roller coaster?

Though some companies started with a fuel cap, most ended up using a cent per mile surcharge.

Over the years, companies changed their contracts to work out their specific bugs or find out which various formulas suited their operations best without losing too many operators in the process.

However, the unfortunate fact is that companies use inconsistent or illogical methods of calculating lease operators fuel surcharge.

For example, some operators had to get 12.5 mpg in order to keep their fuel costs level. This means that any jump in fuel costs resulted in an over dramatic increase in operator fuel costs. Still, far too many companies don’t have their

surcharge even linked to market fuel indexes. Management seems to only raise their surcharge when enough operators complain, forcing operators to loose cash flow while companies either harvest profit or fail to pass on the costs to shippers (or a combination of both).

Some companies justifications for their insufficient surcharges is that “not every shipper/receiver pays a surcharge”. That answer is both true and false. It is true because not all freight invoices show a separate fuel surcharge amount.

The statement is also false because inherent in every bottom line freight invoice is an assumed fuel surcharge which may be accompanied by either a positive or negative market allowance for backhaul/ empty miles consideration.

However, whether the company charges fuel surcharge to shippers or not is irrelevant to lease operator contracts. One has nothing to do with the other.

Lease operator contracts are stand-alone. They are not dependent on market freight rates.

Page T-5 erator contracts as an independent cost structure.

They may use fleet numbers to assist in designing it, but that’s as far as the comparison can go. Lease operators are different than company drivers in productivity, availability and freight management efficiency (truck fuel and maintenance). They will always be different. Their differences should have little or nothing to do with their compensation package. If lease operators get 6.5 miles to the gallon while company drivers get 6.0 mpg, the trucking company cannot (or at least should not) lower operator compensation just because operators are more efficient.

If operators are 25% more productive with

customer satisfaction or “difficult freight issues” it should not factor into the compensation package unless the company wishes to voluntarily pay a surplus for those services. But unfortunately, too many company contracts still try and compensate operators according to company cost structures.

Fuel surcharge is the primary example of this conflict. What determines the fuel consumption rate used in calculating lease operator fuel surcharge? Is it the company consumption rate? Is it the fuel tax consumption rate used to charge fuel tax to operators? Or is it the average operator consumption rate?

Ford’s 3.5-liter twinturbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine powered a Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Riley Prototype to victory recently at Sebring International Raceway.

On one of the most storied and demanding racetracks in the country, Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Marino Franchitti took the Roush Yates-prepped Riley-Ford to victory lane in the 2014 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

Franchitti piloted the No. 01 Telcel Riley-Ford across the finish line first to earn victory in his team’s first-ever appearance at the legendary endurance race. It is the first overall victory for Ford at Sebring in 45 years.

“You read about stuff like this,” said Jamie Allison, Director of Ford Racing. “The last time Ford took the overall win was 1969, and what really makes it so sweet is that this is a win made possible by a production-based Ford EcoBoost engine. It validates what we do here at Ford –that the technology we have in our production cars is good enough to power an all-out win in the

Sebring 12-Hour.”

This victory is the culmination of intense preparation by the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team, Ford Racing, Ford Motor Company and Roush Yates engineers, who have worked together to prove that the heart of a production engine can stand up to the most intense demands of the rigorous Sebring track. More than 70 percent of the EcoBoost engine is production-based.

Three Prototypes compete with the Ford 3.5-liter EcoBoost: The No. 01 and No. 02 race cars of Ganassi, and the No. 60 car of Michael Shank Racing. The No. 02 Comfort Revolution/Big Machine Records Riley-Ford finished sixth at Sebring after spending a considerable time out front. Also making the top10 was the No. 60 Need for Speed Riley-Ford, which finished in ninth.

fall until they either went bankrupt, settled for lower profit, or were forced to charge more for their freight (or some combination of the last two).

Lease operators, those who should never be exposed to fuel market price fluctuations other than through consumption differences, are a flat cost per mile expense for trucking companies. They are an independent business within an independent business.

They should never be

Joining the Ford Racing family in victory lane was Raj Nair, Group Vice President, Ford global product development.

“It was a great day,” said Nair. “The first overall win for Ford since 1969, and at the same time, the first with our partners in Ganassi here at Sebring, in only the second race for the new engine. It doesn’t get any better than this.” b equipment.

OTA Joins Business Coalition To Save Gardiner Expressway Tearing down the eastern Gardiner Expressway and replacing it with any option that increases traffic congestion is not acceptable, says a newly formed coalition of diverse industry groups, which includes the Ontario Trucking Association.

Maintaining the Gardiner’s capacity and improving its connection to the waterfront is the best option in order to meet current and future needs of downtown core business operations and ensure mobility, safety and quality of life for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, the group stated in a press release.

A report released by the City of Toronto is recommending that Council support removing the eastern expressway that serves over 100,000 trips per day.

While removal is the recommendation, the report summarized four options, only one of which maintained its current lane capacity. The report is part of the broader objective of improving To-

ronto’s waterfront.

The coalition is made up of the Ontario Trucking Association, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO), Canadian Courier & Logistics Association, Redpath Sugar, Ontario Motor Coach Association, Toronto Industry Network and the Toronto Financial District BIA. It will address the issues and impacts of the recommendation to remove the eastern Gardiner.

“Our coalition members all support the Waterfront Revitalization Project. We are in agreement that the Gardiner Expressway can be improved without being removed. However, reducing capacity on the Gardiner would force more commuters and trucks on to Toronto’s arterial roads putting the safety of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians at risk. This would have an enormous impact not only on the GTA’s economy and road congestion, but also the quality of life for residents,” said

Faye Lyons, Government Relations, CAA SCO. Congestion is costing the GTHA economy $11 billion per year, according to the C.D. Howe Institute, and both industry and the people of Toronto will be negatively affected if lanes on the Gardiner are removed without providing access to new transit options. The coalition is concerned that the broader impacts on the existing Greater Toronto Area’s transportation network is not being given the level of consideration it should.

The recommendation to remove the Gardiner also assumes that a Downtown Relief Subway Line and additional transit lines including the Waterfront East LRT, the Yonge North Subway Extension and Broadview Avenue transit extension are imminent. However, none are currently funded. The competitiveness and vitality of Toronto’s downtown core must be a high priority, according to the coalition.

“Toronto’s congestion, if not improved, will continue to discourage businesses to locate in the city, and will contribute to the frustration of those trying to get around,” said Lyons. b

Freightliner Showcased New Severe Duty Solutions Freightliner Trucks highlighted some of its toughest vocational solutions at the 2014 CONEXPO-CON/AGG show. The Freightliner Trucks booth (#61940) featured the complete line of Freightliner severe duty (SD) models, including the 122SD with a new mid-chassis exhaust and 45-ton boom crane from National Crane Corp.

The 122SD featured in the Freightliner booth is equipped with a Detroit DD16 engine, set-back twin-steer front axle configuration, 13” rail, and a 48” sleeper cab. The 122SD DD16 mid-chassis exhaust package is also available with a 34” sleeper cab.

Heavy-Duty Transportation Centre Will Innovate Government is providing $4.5 million to move heavy-duty transportation programs offered by BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) and Vancouver Community College (VCC) into a new Motive Power Centre.

Motive power programs train heavy-duty mechanics, transport trailer mechanics, diesel mechanics, commercial transportation mechanics, railway conductors and forklift operators.

“Around 43 per cent of the one million jobs expected to open by 2020 will require trades or technical training,” said Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk. “Co-locating two existing heavy-duty transportation programs into one centre will benefit students, industry and employers.”

The new Motive Power Centre will create opportunities to develop synergies between the two post-secondary institutions as well as with prospective employers, while also providing the physical space and opportunity for industry to be present in the centre.

“The new motive power centre will have the space necessary to facilitate partnerships with industry giving students the most relevant current training opportunities possible,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and

Minister Responsible for Labour Shirley Bond. “To ensure our students are first in line for the thousands of jobs available now and opening up in the future it is critical that we align training with the jobs that are in demand.”

When the Motive Power Centre opens to students in September 2014, it will focus on collaboration, innovation, and the efficient use of equipment and resources. At 142,000-squarefeet, the facility sets a solid foundation for partnership opportunities with industry.

The centre will continue to train and graduate students in many industries that are identified as a priority in the BC Jobs Plan.

This includes mining, oil and gas, shipbuilding, aerospace and the LNG sector.

An estimated 13,000 people in B.C. are employed in the field of heavy-duty commercial transportation, and as diesel and transport trailer technicians. BCIT and VCC produce 650 graduates annually – more than half of the heavy-duty transportation graduates entering the province’s workforce each year.

“The Annacis Island centre has many benefits for students,” said BCIT President Kathy Kinloch.

“Our students will have

better teaching facilities, learning and laboratory spaces, and the opportunity to connect with industry.

This will enable them to be even more employable and to connect with the government’s job plan.”

“This new centre speaks to the value of collaboration and partnership within the post-secondary sector,” said VCC Interim President Doug Callbeck. “The new facility will give our students the opportunity to learn in a state-of-the-art training environment, gaining the hands-on skills and experience they need for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Once transported to the site in mid-2014, a signature piece of the Annacis Island centre will be the 140-ton, five-metretall Man Engine. Donated

by Man Diesel and Turbo Canada and valued at $1.25-million, the engine will be a cornerstone of training curriculum within marine, motive power and power engineering at BCIT. The engine will provide relevant, hands-on opportunities for heavy-duty mechanics across several industry sectors.

The $4.5 million in one-time funding is being providing by the Ministry of Advanced Education to cover moving and transition costs.

The relocation of the BCIT programs from their current location at Great Northern Way will make way for the new campus of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Construction of the new campus is slated for fall 2014. b

Bendix Offers Advice On Choosing, Inspecting, And Installing Remanufactured Parts With decades of experience in remanufacturing commercial vehicle parts such as compressors, air dryers, valves, and brake shoes, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC recognizes the value that remanufactured parts can bring to fleets and trucks.

Reman versus Rebuild “Selecting quality remanufactured parts begins with the right sourcing – knowing what to look for, and knowing what questions to ask the part supplier,” said Henry

Foxx, Bendix Director of Remanufactured Products. “And among the first and most crucial things to learn is whether you’re dealing with a true parts remanufacturer or a rebuilder.”

There’s a vast difference between the two When a rebuilder disassembles the core of a part for reuse – an air compressor, for instance – they don’t necessarily replace the components of that product with new ones or bring the product back to its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) performance level.

nents, or replace them with inferior versions since they may not have full access to OEM-quality components such as pistons, connecting rods, or crankshafts.

Remanufacturing, on the other hand, always involves either replacing or repairing a core’s components to bring the part up to OEM specs. Additionally, some components – referred to as wear components – are always replaced with new versions during remanufacturing. Wear components such as gaskets, washers, and O-rings are never reused by a true remanufacturer.

Questions to Ask When developing a strategy to use remanufactured parts in your operation, it’s vital for fleet managers to arm themselves with as much information as possible. Here are four questions you must ask of any potential remanufacturing partner: • Do they replace nonsalvageable or irreparable components with new?

• Do they replace wear components 100 percent of the time?

• What type of tests do

they conduct to validate the performance of their parts?

• How do they support the product through warranties and/or service needs?

Those latter questions will help you address the post-sale concerns of dependable parts and reliable technical support.

The definitive gauge of any remanufactured part is how it performs once it’s off the assembly line and on the vehicle. Bendix, for example, conducts end-of-line testing on its remanufactured parts, while many rebuilders can only offer limited testing.

A strong post-sales support system is another important consideration, from the length of warranty coverage to the geographic availability of parts and service locations.

Tips for Technicians Selecting the proper remanufacturer is just the beginning. Fleets and drivers rely on skilled technicians for quality inspection and installation of remanufactured parts.

From a true remanufacturer, technicians should expect a part that will perform as well as the one that was originally on the truck and has been updated, if necessary, to the latest specifications.

They should also expect parts that come ready for a complete installation,

Bendix offers the following tips for reference during inspection and installation of remanufactured parts: • Air compressors – Have the flanges been refinished to a flat, smooth surface? Are there new gaskets provided for the installation?

• Brake shoes – Inspect the friction used for relining: has it been certified for Reduced Stopping Distance compliance, or has the shoe been fitted with a low cost, lower-performing substitute? • Electronics (such as radar units) – Ensure the operating software has received the latest OEM updates.

Bendix Recycling Drives 96 Percent Waste Diversion Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, has achieved a 96 percent waste diversion rate as a result of its ongoing efforts to operate in environmentally responsible and innovative ways. Bendix diverted more than 9,500 tons of waste, which included recycling more than 9,240 tons of material last year – waste that once would have gone into landfills.

Bendix has driven waste diversion through recycling programs for basic materials, such as cardboard, wood, plastic, and metal. It has done so at its headquarters in Elyria, Ohio, and its manufacturing plants in Bowling Green, Ky.; Huntington, Ind.; and Acuña, Mexico.

The company has found other recycling channels as well: Bendix sends discarded desiccant from its recycled air dryers to a company that reclaims the waste material for use in producing cement.

sent to landfills and, as a result, prevented an estimated 15 million pounds from being disposed in this way every year.

Bendix also reduces its environmental impact through its remanufacturing efforts, dismantling parts such as compressors, air dryers, valves, and brake shoes after their initial use, salvaging key components, and reassembling them with salvaged (when applicable) and new components to meet current specifications. This efficient form of recycling reduces the carbon footprint associated with the fabrication of new parts by 80 percent.

All-New Ford F-150 Adds Tough New Snow Plow Prep Option Winter warriors will have a tough new tool in their arsenal against Mother Nature with Ford’s new snow plow prep option, available on the all-new 2015 F-150. Ford is expected to be the only manufacturer to offer a light-duty snow plow prep option across all cab configurations – Regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew (when properly equipped. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR).

When snow plow mode is activated via the push of a button, the vehicle temporarily turns off nonessential features to provide dedicated power for the plow.

The option package requires the truck be equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine and four-wheel drive, and is available across XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels.

“The new 2015 F-150 is the toughest F-150 ever, and by using more high-

strength steel in its frame and advanced materials in the body, we’ve made the new truck up to 700 pounds lighter,” said Eric Peterson, Ford F-150 Marketing Manager. “This leads to more capability and better handling, which is exactly what you’d want for plowing. Adding a snow plow prep kit to our lineup helps ensure our customers have even more tools at their disposal to get the job done.”

Upon taking delivery of a new F-150 with the snow plow prep option, owners will need to take their truck to a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to purchase and install the plow hardware.

The maximum light-duty plow weight will be over 450 pounds.

Pricing for the snow plow prep option, excluding the plow, will be announced later this year.

(HELP) the non-profit, publicprivate partnership dedicated to motor carrier safety and efficiency, has again selected Xerox as its vendor partner for technology solutions, site operations and customer service for PrePass – its advanced Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology – and other truck safety and commercial enforcement tools.

HELP and the Commercial Vehicle Operations Division acquired

PrePass is North America’s largest truck safety e-screening and pre-clearance network, with more than 300 operational sites in 31 states and several new sites in various stages of planning and construction. PrePass reached an enrolment mile-

stone of 461,974 qualified trucks from nearly 37,000 fleets by the end of 2013, making it the largest deployment of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology in the U.S. today.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in the 16 years that HELP has been collecting bypass data, PrePass has also reduced truck emissions by 507,326 metric tons.

HELP and Xerox also offer electronic pre-payment of truck tolls on 78 different toll roads, turnpikes, tunnels and bridges in 15 different states through the PrePass Plus system, with expansion of the service to several new facilities to be announced soon. b

A switch is then flipped to power on four 1,500-watt lights mounted on a moveable steel arm.

By physically pushing

the arm to specific points around the circle’s edge, and adjusting the spotlights and floodlights in the ceiling, the Lighting Lab can simulate light conditions at every time of day, while the additional lighting in the dome is used to vary weather conditions from bright sun to full cloud cover.

These tools allow Ford engineers to re-create any kind of lighting condition found anywhere in the world when designing new vehicles, which is critical to the development of global products such as the 2014 Ford Fiesta. b
