Short Sea Shipping On The Great Lakes

New study reveals opportunities to move more goods on the Canada-US Great Lakes.

A new study sheds light on the potential advantages of short sea shipping services between southern Ontario and the US Great Lakes region. The study is authored by Fluid Intelligence, a data-analysis partnership of HOPA Ports and the McMaster Institute for Transportation & Logistics, with support from Transport Canada. It highlights the numerous trade flows that could benefit from integrating marine transportation alongside trucking services.

“A competitive and resilient goods movement sector is vital to the industries and supply chains that underpin Ontario’s economy and connect Ontario to export markets – and it’s changing,” noted Dr. Mark Ferguson, Senior Research Associate, McMaster Institute for Transportation & Logistics.

“This study, which draws on information from different jurisdictions and levels of government, and insights from the marine sector, provides insights into market opportunities for marine and its implications for public policy in this evolving ecosystem.”

Currently, over 12,000 trucks per week make crossborder trips between Southern Ontario and US Great Lakes port areas, carrying non-perishable commodities

that are ideal candidates for a marine service to handle the long-haul ‘middle mile’.

By exploring short sea shipping services on the Great Lakes, the study envisions a future with reduced highway and border congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improved supply chain resilience.

Short sea shipping, a widely adopted approach in Europe and Asia, is an increasingly appealing alternative to road transportation in the Great Lakes region. Factors such as population growth, highway congestion, driver shortages, and rising fuel costs have contributed to a growing interest in marine transportation. Importantly, short sea shipping offers a significant environmental advantage, as one marine vessel can carry the same cargo capacity as 963 transport trucks, while emitting just 15% of the CO2 per metric tonne/km.

As Canada’s busiest economic region, southern Ontario’s critical infrastructure struggles to keep up with the demand on its highways. Issues such as highway congestion, border delays, lack of transportation redundancy, and truck driver shortages have been exacerbated by population growth and density. The economic cost

of congestion in the GTHA alone is estimated to be up to $6 billion per year.

CPKC Adds 1,000 Reefers To Expand MMX Service

Canadian Pacific Kansas City has announced the addition of 1,000 new, 53-foot, refrigerated intermodal containers to its network, more than doubling CPKC’s existing fleet and bringing more shipping options to customers using the expanding Mexico Midwest Express (MMX) Series premium intermodal service.

MMX is North America’s first single-line rail service offering for refrigerated shippers from the Midwest to Mexico, a market currently served by trucks. Single-line haul efficiencies, combined with seamless crossborder service, make CPKC intermodal transit times competitive with over the road trucks. Converting trucks to rail reduces emissions and makes highways safer, another realization of the benefits of the CPKC combination.

“Since being launched on May 11, MMX has provided truck competitive service, delivering exactly what we promised and executing

The average intermodal train takes more than 300 trucks off the road with 75 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than trucks. Freight trains are four times more fuel efficient than trucks and can move a ton of freight 500 miles on one gallon of fuel.

The new refrigerated containers are part of CPKC’s TempPro™ solutions, ensuring products that require temperature protection are transported safely in a fast, reliable, and fuel-efficient service that brings optionality and more competition to North American supply chains.

The MMX temperature

controlled service will move fresh and frozen produce, baked goods, candy and other food products northbound and beef, chicken and pork to southern markets.

The MMX Series debuted May 11 with trains now linking Chicago, Kansas City, Texas markets, Monterrey and San Luis Potosi. MMX trains offer third-day service to/from Laredo, fourth-day service to/ from Monterrey, and 4.5-day service to/from San Luis Potosi. MMX provides transit time of 98 hours from Chicago to San Luis Potosi – a day faster than the nearest competitor.

In April, CPKC announced new multi-year agreements with Schneider and with Knight-Swift Transportation for intermodal transportation services along the CPKC single-line northsouth corridor.

Approximately 28.5 mil-

lion tonnes of cargo per year originating in Ontario are transported by truck to the US, with 70% destined for a Great Lakes State. Conversely, at least 24 million tonnes of cargo per year originate in the US and move by truck

into Ontario, with 55% originating in a Great Lakes State.

The study focuses on specific routes and commodity flows that are excellent candidates for new marine services. These include the potential for marine services

between southern Ontario and ports on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. Chicago and Milwaukee, with their concentration of economic activity and strong connections to the GTHA, stand out as promising origin/destinations.

Overall, there are approximately 5,000 (within a 50km radius) and 12,000 (within a 100km radius) truck trips per week between five US Great Lakes ports and southern Ontario, all of which present excellent opportunities for modal alternatives.

By diverting just 10% of the existing cargo currently moved by truck between southern Ontario and the Port of Chicago, for example, the transportation system could save 220 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per week.

Manitoba To Twin Trans-Canada Highway From Falcon Lake To Manitoba-Ontario Border

Twinning Prioritized to Improve Safety and Accessibility: Premier

Work is now underway as the Manitoba government begins its next steps on twinning the Trans-Canada Highway from Falcon Lake to Manitoba-Ontario border, Premier Heather Stefanson announced.

“It is important for Manitobans to have safe and reliable highways to get around this great province of ours and also to get to neighbouring provinces,” said Stefanson. “That is why we have prioritized this work as it not only serves as a key trade route, but is one of the busiest stretches of highways especially during the summer months for cottagers and travellers.

The Manitoba government has committed to four lanes of traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway between Falcon Lake and the Manitoba-Ontario border and has prioritized twinning 700 metres of the highway nearest the border to align

with Ontario’s new four-lane highway.

“Twinning the TransCanada Highway from Falcon Lake to the Manitoba-Ontario border will significantly improve safety for Manitobans and our government is committed to getting the job done,” said Stefanson.

Work is currently underway, including tree clearing and other activities that began May 19 with an anticipated completion by fall 2024.

The Manitoba government has also commissioned a conceptual design study for full 16-kilometre twinning project and following a competitive request for proposal process has selected Tetra Tech Canada Inc. to complete the study.

All studies will include consultation with Indigenous rights holders, and engagement with land and business owners, the public, and stakeholders, to develop a full understanding of the project’s implications, noted Piwniuk.

In the spring of 2023, AMTA and Nikola Motor Corp. jointly announced the purchase of a Nikola Class-8 commercial vehicle, and it is now ready to hit the road in the hands of commercial carriers across the province.

AMTA’s Nikola Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), in partnership with Bison Transport, is part of AMTA’s Hydrogen Commercial Vehicle Demonstrations project, the first of its kind in Canada. Through this program, Alberta-based commercial carriers will have the opportunity to test these heavy-duty commercial vehicles that operate with alternative, energy-efficient fuels within their day-to-day business operations and in true road and weather conditions within Alberta.

“We are excited to put this truck to work in Alberta and begin collecting performance data and raising awareness about this advanced technology,” says Doug Paisley, AMTA board chair. “Promoting early

Ballard + Ford Trucks Partner For Fuel Cell Powered Heavy-Duty Trucks

Ballard Power Systems has announced the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) with Ford Trucks to supply a fuel cell system as part of the development of a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle prototype.

The partnership includes an initial purchase order for 2 FCmove™-XD 120 kW fuel cell engines that are planned to be delivered by Ballard to Ford Trucks in 2023.

Ford Trucks, the global brand of Ford Otosan, plans to develop a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) F-MAX as part of the project. The 120 kW FCmoveXDTM fuel cell engines are planned to be integrated into Ford Trucks’ F-MAX 44-ton long-haul tractor truck. Ford Trucks plans to build and assemble the fuel cell-powered F-MAX in Turkey and aims to commence European Ten-T corridor demonstrations in 2025 as part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe ZEFES (Zero Emission Freight EcoSystem) project goals. As per the LOI, upon the successful completion of the development program

and subject to certain other conditions, Ballard may be named as the preferred supplier for the serial production of the fuel cell-powered F-MAX.

In the ZEFES project, four truck OEMs, two trailer OEMs, suppliers, logistic operators, and research partners will work together towards the overall goal of accelerating the integration of ZEVs for long distance heavy transport. This work plans to focus on efficiency improvements, mass production capabilities, and demonstrating the use of the technologies in daily operations. In 2025, nine different vehicle concepts (four FCEV and five BEV) are expected to run over 1 million kilometers across EU corridors in real daily operations, guided and validated by a digital platform (to be developed within the

project). This project is expected to be a significant step forward for ZEV adoption in the freight transport ecosystem. Vehicles are expected to carry over 40 tonnes for distances up to 750 km, averaging 500 km in daily operation.

Kenworth Truck Company announced it will partner with legendary country music band Alabama to sponsor its “Roll On 2 North America Tour” as a way to thank truckers and the trucking community for its support.

Kenworth is providing Alabama with a Kenworth T680 76-inch mid-roof sleeper for the band’s 2023 concert tour. The partner-

ship, which also coincides with Kenworth’s 100th anniversary, is the renewal of a relationship that spanned a 15-year period from 19882003 when Kenworth sponsored its annual “Truckers Appreciation Concert” starring the popular, multiple award-winning band. The concert was held at Freedom Hall in Louisville in conjunction with the MidAmerica Trucking Show.

At the time, tickets were distributed to truckers, who patiently lined up outside the Kentucky Exposition Center before show doors opened the first two days.

For many years, Alabama used Kenworth trucks to transport its equipment to concert sites across the country. In 2003, the band visited the Kenworth plant in Renton, Wash., to pick up a new Kenworth W900

72-inch AeroCab. The band has also visited the Kenworth plant in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Navistar Reveals International SuperTruck II Results

Navistar has revealed the results of the International SuperTruck II, a project in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

International SuperTruck

II demonstrates 16 miles per gallon (MPG) fuel efficiency through hybridization and a 170% improvement in freight efficiency, among other advancements over the 2009 baseline vehicle, its International SuperTruck I. It also proves innovative technical approaches to weight reduction from rolling resistance technologies, aerodynamic improvements, and powertrain technologies designed to deliver premium freight efficiency to assist in reducing U.S. dependency on fossil fuels in the commercial vehicle sector.

“With co-funding by the DOE, Navistar engineers experimented with prospective technologies not currently available in the Class 8 truck market to accelerate the impact of sustainable mobility,” said Russ Zukouski, chief engineer, Global Innovation and Principal Investigator for the Supertruck programs. “The team concentrated its design on high-voltage electrification, utilizing hybrid technology on a path toward full electrification that has the potential to be commercialized in fully electric vehicles and improve customers’ total cost of ownership (TCO) and business operations.”

With a shared program goal of increasing Class 8 vehicle efficiency and reducing the U.S. dependance on fossil fuels, International SuperTruck II focused on the next generation of vehicle efficiency improvements through hybridization and aerodynamics. This resulted in a demonstration of 170% improvement in vehicle

freight efficiency, 55% engine brake thermal efficiency, assessed TCO opportunities for individual technologies, and high-voltage electrification efforts modeling hybrid technologies that can be utilized for fully electric vehicles.

“Navistar is the only OEM to build a trailer to provide the most accurate testing results possible,” said Dean Oppermann, chief engineer, Advanced Truck. “It includes a 100% composite box designed for minimum aerodynamic drag with light weight, integrated cross members, controlled underbody flow with composite aero treatments, next-generation solar panels with connectivity options, and ride height control.”

Highlighting Navistar’s commitment to an electrified future, International SuperTruck II was built as a hybrid vehicle featuring a combustion engine with high-voltage accessories and technologies, developed in partnership with Bosch. Engine improvements were made in key areas including combustion, friction, gas exchange, and airflow through the engine. A redesigned cylinder head with dual overhead cam engine and enhanced fuel system resulted in a 2% fuel economy improvement when compared to International SuperTruck I. Aftertreatment system improvements included diesel exhausted fluid (DEF) dosing, improved mixing and lower restrictions, new selective catalytic reduction (SCR) formulations for high-NOx reduction and reduced coldstart activation time.

“A full system approach

was required to achieve 55.2% brake thermal efficiency,” said Jim Cigler, chief engineer, Advanced Engine. “Opportunities were identified by internal engineering teams along with research partner Argonne National Laboratory through detailed analysis and simulation. System suppliers such as Bosch, Jacobs Vehicle Systems, and Applied Nano Systems (ANS) brought new approaches to key systems that enabled laboratory success and yielded real-world fuel economy improvements. Navistar was able to identify new ways to push our engines to the next level of efficiency.”

International SuperTruck II highlighted connectivity with next-generation predictive cruise control, as well as leveraging technologies and information within the larger TRATON Group to explore vehicle-to-everything technologies to enhance safety and vehicle efficiencies.

“Our goal is to continue to advance internal combustion engine technology as efficiently and sustainably as possible until there is parity with zero-emissions vehicles,” said Opperman. “Development of both technologies concurrently ensures a smooth transition of technology to best serve customer needs. We are focused on the entire product ecosystem – product development itself, as well as infrastructure charging, service and support of vehicle operation, end of life for batteries.”

With a winch-style cable hoist, the inefficient process an operator must follow can limit the number of pickups

they can perform per day. For each pickup, the operator must get out of the truck, pull the cable out, hook the cable to the container, return to the truck, proceed to pull the container up, get back out of the truck, manually pin the cable hoist dump in place and return to the truck cab. When they drop the container, this process needs to be repeated, in reverse. This time-consuming process happens with each pickup and drop of a container — but not with a hooklift.

When working with a hooklift, an operator can eliminate extra steps needed to hook to a container. The user can simply deploy the hook, back up to the container, hook the container and pull it onto the truck all from the truck cab. The elimination of continuously having to enter and exit the cab with every pickup and drop greatly decreases downtime and increases work efficiency.

Philippi-Hagenbuch Load Ejector System Addresses Material Carryback for Improved Haul Truck Efficiency

Philippi-Hagenbuch’s Load Ejector System is engineered to virtually eliminate material carryback, effectively increasing load capacity and improving operational efficiency.

This solution allows operations to haul the full rated capacity with each load and reduce downtime associated with removing carryback from the truck. Load Ejectors are professionally engineered to fit the exact make and model of any articulated or rigid frame off-highway haul truck and address the specific areas of the body where material tends to build up.

Sticky materials, such

as clay, dirt, mud, fly ash and bottom ash, tend to build up in haul truck bodies, minimizing volumetric capacity when carried back with the truck for the next load. The Load Ejector System consists of an overlapping jointed plate lattice design that rests flat against the front slope and floor inside of the truck body. When the body is raised, the Load Ejector separates from the truck

bed by gravity, removing material as it hangs vertically away from the body. This leaves an empty truck with its full capacity for the next load.

“We often see operations accumulate up to 50% of their truck body’s volumetric capacity in carryback, and the costs to haul that material back and forth can really add up both in lost payload and in additional wear and tear on the truck,” said Josh Swank, vice president of sales and marketing at Philippi-Hagenbuch. “Removing it requires significant downtime, not only for the haul truck but possibly for an excavator to scrape out the material and also for the operators who are taken away from their regular production roles for 20 minutes or more per truck that needs cleaned

Philippi-Hagenbuch engineers Load Ejectors with three different mounting styles, each allowing for easy installation and removal. The standard mount is used for carryback that accumulates on the front slope of the body but not on a majority of the floor surface. The builtup mount is engineered to address material that sticks to the front slope as well as down and back toward the rear of the body floor. The rotating mount provides full-length coverage from the front slope to the rear of the body floor and automatically pulls away from the truck body when the bed is dumped.

Additionally, PhilippiHagenbuch offers two material options to match the Load Ejector with different applications. The standardduty design is made of highstrength Grade 80 steel and is intended for operations with a minimal abrasion, while the heavy-duty design is built with Hardox 450 Steel for applications that haul highly abrasive materials.

Showcasing Trucking To Students Pondering Career Paths

More than three dozen high school students and young adults considering their post-secondary futures got the chance to learn about various career opportunities in trucking and get up close and personal with some big rigs.

The event, co-organized by the Toronto Business Development Centre (TBDC), the Ontario Trucking Association and Bison Transport, was developed to showcase some of the many opportunities and innovations throughout the Canadian trucking industry to high school students part of the TBDC’s Skilled Trades Summer Camp for Youth program.

During the program, about 40 students who expressed interest in trucking as a potential career listened to a presentation by OTA’s Marco Beghetto on the CTA’s Choose to Truck image and recruitment social media campaign. After getting a primer on the trucking industry; the demand for new workers as a result of the driver and technician shortage; and the Alliance’s efforts to educate millennials and Gen Z about trucking through the social media campaign, the students went on a tour through Bison’s state-of-theart headquarters in Mississauga.

There, they were guided through several stations, in-

cluding a maintenance shop tour, a truck and trailer display in the yard, and an interactive operations/sales overview in the boardroom. At each stop, lively Bison employees explained the various roles and responsibilities of technicians, long and shorthaul truck drivers, dispatchers, route planners and sales/ marketing teams, among others. They also learned about the truck equipment, emerging safety and environmental technology, and software systems throughout the operation.

“The goal today was to promote trucking as a promising and fulfilling career path. With various stations providing comprehensive information and engaging activities, we aim to inspire these young, eager minds, offering them a chance to embark on a journey of exploration and learning in trucking,” says Jonathan Knott, program Manager at TBDC, Lead of Summer Program. “A career in trucking promises stability and numerous growth opportunities, making it an attrac-

tive choice for young people entering the labour market.”

The Skilled Trades Summer Camp is a cost-free summer training program with the TBDC and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), aimed at helping young individuals develop workplace skills and have the opportunity to secure placement with employers.

This innovative program aims to provide employability and workforce development training to students through the month of July. The program also attempts to provide financial literacy, and mental health and wellness.

Port Saint John Celebrates The Inaugural Use Of Its Two New Cranes

In June, Port Saint John welcomed the Hapag-Lloyd Barcelona Express at its new, additional pier, celebrating with its arrival the inaugural use of two new post-Panamax cranes at the DP World operated terminal.

Delivered to the Port earlier this year, these cranes enable increased throughput and provide well-paying job opportunities and economic benefits to New Brunswick, as well as expanding the fluidity of Canada’s supply chain. The two new cranes brought the total to four, the most quay cranes ever at Port Saint John and a boost to the terminal’s capacity to operate efficiently and on a broader array of vessels.

ment to DP World’s significant investment in the Port since 2016 and another momentous milestone in the $205 million infrastructure modernization project in partnership with Port Saint John the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick.

Mammoet Transports Structures For PDX Terminal Expansion

Portland International Airport, commonly referred to as “PDX” and one of America’s best airports, anticipates substantial growth over the next two decades.

PDX is scaling up in preparation to better serve 35 million passengers annually by undergoing a main terminal expansion project – nearly doubling its size.

A key component of this expansion is the construction of a new, seismically isolated roof structure over the central area of the airport. Mammoet was contracted to jack up, transport, and install twenty roof panels of five distinct types at the airport in Portland, Oregon, USA - all while avoiding passenger disruption.

The roof, crafted mainly from regionally and sustainably sourced wood, was fully prefabricated between the active runways of the airport over the course of a year. Prior to being moved, the roof panels were disconnected into approximately football field sized pieces to be transported to the new terminal expansion.

This allowed the airport to carry-on as usual while minimizing disruption to airport operations. Depending on the type of panel, each was launched, rolled into place, set directly with self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), or lifted with a crane into its final position.

The panels vary in weight between 40t and 632t, with dimensions up to 72m x 50m x 6m. Mammoet used four towers of Mega Jack 800 to jack up the roof panels to approximately 17m to allow SPMTs with falsework to be driven underneath each roof section. At midnight on the day of each move, the runways were closed for the one-mile transport of the panel from laydown yard to terminal. The roof sections were moved with care at a speed of about 1.6 kilometers, or one mile, per hour.

Most panels needed to be installed over the top of

populated areas of the existing terminal building. With safety at the forefront of the entire project, work was done during strict overnight closures when the public could be kept clear of the work area. Once the area was verified to be clear of all pedestrians, the installation of the roof panels could begin. Each panel, referred to as a super cassette, was installed using stationary skidding propelled by strand jacks and lowered with the skidding jacks onto column isolators.

The next set of panels were then rolled into position down the bottom flanges of the previously set panels. The panels were safely secured with consideration for potential elevated wind and project specific seismic requirements before the public were allowed to reoccupy the area below.

A major complexity of the project was the wood material

used in the roof panels’ construction. Deflection of the roof panels was a major concern of the client and the roof designers, so at each point in the jacking, transport, and installation process deflection of the roof was monitored and kept within stringent criteria. Only the super cassette pieces had steel girders in the longitudinal direction to support the 25m wooden arches and to allow the panels to be “launched” using stationary skidding equipment. piles which were installed in the 1950s.

To mitigate any issues, Mammoet performed extensive friction testing in its Rosharon, Texas yard prior to execution to ensure no structural damage occurred to a mockup roof panel, and that the design values presented to the client for strand jack anchoring were realistic. When executing the job on site, Mammoet closely monitored the loads and deflections to ensure that they were in line with the tested values.

To date, Mammoet has

successfully placed sixteen panels to wrap up phase one of the project. Four additional panels will be installed in 2024 during phase two - once the interior of the new terminal expansion has been built out by the client for general occupancy. Funding of Design Study for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Manufacturing Facility Supports Local Agriculture, Sustainable Decarbonization: Stefanson, Bibeau.

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are committed to enhancing Manitoba’s competitive advantages in leading-edge, value-added agricultural processing to support the development of renewable transportation fuel processing in Canada.

“Manitoba is well-positioned for companies like Azure to power the world’s drive to a lower-emissions future and create beyond net-zero energy markets,” announced Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson. “Our goal in supporting Azure is to have Manitoba recognized globally as a leader in successfully integrating agriculture with energy markets to provide a sustainable decarbonization solution while creating more good jobs.”

This new industry will position Manitoba as a hub for innovation and green,

low-carbon technologies. The Canada and Manitoba governments are providing $2.9 million over two years to support Azure Sustainable Fuels Corp.’s Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for a planned sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) processing facility near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food announced in June.

“The agriculture sector can play an important role in reducing emissions and helping Canada to meet its climate targets,” stated The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “The Azure facility will help harness the power of sustainable energy while growing economic opportunities and contributing to Canada’s

2030 Emissions Reduction Plan.”

The facility’s construction is anticipated to cost approximately $1.9 billion and to produce an estimated one billion litres per year of SAF, primarily using Canadian feedstock products such as canola and soybean oils. With Canada’s and Manitoba’s support, the Azure project will create 1,500 construction jobs and approximately 150 direct permanent, highly specialized jobs once in production. The construction of the Azure facility is projected to have a total impact on the Manitoba economy of $2 billion. The first year of operations is expected to create more than $500 million in economic output and sustain hundreds of jobs throughout Manitoba.

“The establishment of a sustainable aviation fuel fa-

cility would bring an exciting development for Portage la Prairie and a significant gain for the economic vibrancy of this region,” said Manitoba Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson. “The creation of this new processing facility would also add to the momentum in the Portage la Prairie area, which has seen strong investment in business development and housing since 2017. Through the use of the SAF process for the Azure facility, approximately 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions will be reduced on an annual basis, equalling the emissions of 556,749 passenger vehicles. Manitoba’s sustainable farming practices, with continued advancements, create further opportunities for increased environmental benefits. This will have a significant global impact on the aviation industry and decarbonization goals, the premier noted.

VIA Rail To Upgrade London Station

VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) has announced over $25 million in upgrades to its London, Ontario station.

Once completed in 2025, these investments will make the station – one of the busiest in VIA Rail’s network – a more comfortable, more accessible, and more efficient station and will improve the passenger experience in London.

“At VIA Rail, we are continuing to transform the way Canadians travel from reservation to destination, and this includes our stations,” said Rita Toporowski, VIA Rail’s Chief Customer Officer. “The investments in this station will allow us to enhance the customer experience in London, and also demonstrate the commitment of VIA Rail to continue being a key member of the London community,” she adds.

By improving installations and placing a focus on hiring local contractors for the renovations, VIA Rail aims to contribute to regional eco-

nomic development. Additionally, the station upgrades will foster opportunities for commercial real estate space and local businesses.

“Our government is committed to passenger rail,” stated The Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport. “Today’s announcement is good news for the people of London. Upon completion, VIA Rail will have invested over $25M in upgrades. The nature of the upgrades varies from necessary civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical work to retrofitting and rehabilitating core building systems and services. This work on the station is planned in four phases:

• Phase I – Civil and structural upgrades (already completed)

• Phase II – Building envelope refurbishment (already completed)

• Phase III – Passenger platform replacement (contract to be awarded summer 2023)

• Phase IV – Interior and base building services refurbishments (contract to be awarded fall 2023)

In addition to making the customer experience more comfortable, these investments will make London’s station more sustainable and accessible. The new platforms will meet the latest accessibility standards and new doors and paths giving full accessibility access into the building have already been upgraded during Phase I construction.

“The upgrades announced today are a welcome addition to the London VIA Rail station,” remarked Peter Fragiskatos, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for London North Centre. “In particular, the new platforms will provide a better experience for travellers and the fact that they will be fully accessible is

Trucks For Change Renews Commitment To Make Food Bank Deliveries Throughout 2023

More big-hearted, community-minded carriers invited to join Network.

Food insecurity touches the lives of more Canadians than ever. That’s why the Trucks for Change Network (T4C) has renewed its commitment to The For GOOD Foundation (TFGF) to provide transportation services until the end of 2023.

So far, 20 carriers in the T4C Network are participating, delivering over 300,000 lbs. of TFGF-proprietary food to food banks across the country in the first half of 2023.

“This is the third time that carriers in our network have answered the Foundation’s call for road and intermodal transportation,” says Betsy Sharples, Executive Director, Trucks for Change Network. “While we have a core group of carriers involved, the number of food banks and shelters awaiting delivery for the remainder of the year remains high and we are eager to broaden carrier participation by inviting more carriers to join the T4C Network.”

Every effort is made to make hauling freight destined for charities convenient and seamless, says T4C’s Sharples. “For 2023,

the food bank ordering system was modified to enhance efficiencies for our carriers. Smaller order quantities allow carriers to utilize existing trailer capacity for less-than-truckload shipments,” she says. “Carriers ship pallets earmarked for a charity delivery in trailers when space becomes available. There is rarely a rigid delivery date.”

But while many destinations are currently covered by existing carriers, there are still gaps that need to be filled. Of the 91 food banks across the country that participate in the TFGF program, T4C carriers have only been able to cover 84 so far. Some locations are simply not in areas served by current T4C participating carriers, or those carriers are already stretched to meet the number of shipments they are being asked to carry. In particular, T4C is looking for carriers who can take goods to food banks located in the interior of British Columbia.

Loblaw To Purchase Five Kenworth

Kenworth has announced Loblaw Companies Limited intends to purchase five recently introduced Class 8 zero emissions T680 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), powered by Toyota fuel cell technology.

Kenworth first announced the 2025 serial production of the T680 FCEV at ACT Expo on May 2nd, during the keynote address delivered by John Rich, PACCAR Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.

Reducing carbon emissions is an important action Loblaw Companies Limited is taking as it works to fight climate change, according to Wayne Scott, Loblaw’s senior director of transportation maintenance. Loblaw is Canada’s food and pharmacy leader, as well as its largest retailer and private sector employer. The company currently operates two battery-electric trucks and plans

to decarbonize its entire fleet of more than 160 companyowned day cab trucks by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 for its enterprise operating footprint (including franchise and associate-owned operations).

By the end of 2022, Loblaw Companies Limited reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 8 percent compared to its 2020 baseline.

First Day at M & B

One morning arriving at the steel spars Nories were running overlooking Elk Bay, Sammy said that they were only going to run one spar from now on. We called Bill the supervisor and got him up to the yarders.

“What’s going on?” we asked.

“Nories’ are only going to run one yarder from now on,” said Bill. “Sammy wants only five guys.”

I wasn’t on the list! Sammy had forgot to tell us the day before. He said I was a good hooker, but a bit lazy, so he kept another guy who worked his ass off but wasn’t too smart. I was surprised, as I’d worked for Nories since childhood.

So sitting at home, Dad found some salvage work for our skidder at Bear Lake Logging, owned by our neighbours Bob Craig and George Davis. My brother Rodney was running the skidder and slipped getting back on the machine and rebroke his leg. That was the end of that.

I went to the Canada Manpower Center (as it was called at the time) and

registered. It was a hiring agency with job boards and you applied for Unemployment Insurance there. Some days later I got a phone call from Norm Webb, who was from Manpower in charge of hiring loggers. He told me to go out to Menzies Bay, M&B were looking for experienced loggers. Me and my youngest brother Stacy went out to their office. I’d already been there and filled out an application. While Stacy was doing that, I went for an interview with the personnel manager.

A few days later I got a call to come to work at Menzies Bay. I was introduced to Vic Bortolotto, one of the woods foremen. I grabbed my caulk boots and tin hardhat and jumped in the pickup. We chatted about my logging experience as we went. We got to a steel spar crew that was rigging up.

First Public Hydrogen Fueling Station Set for T.O. Airport

Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Carlsun Energy announced Ontario’s first public hydrogen refuelling station, with capability for both cars and transport trucks.

The hydrogen station is part of Toronto Pearson’s commitment to clean and efficient energy solutions in the aviation industry, and in building the airport of the future.

Ontario’s first public hydrogen refueling station for both light- and heavy-duty vehicles will be built, owned, and operated by Carlsun Energy, expert integrators in large-scale renewable energy projects. This project is enabled by a $1 million federal investment from Natural Resources Canada.

The station will be capable of refuelling light-duty vehicles and transport vehicles and is integral to Toronto Pearson’s leadership in building clean energy solutions.

Deborah Flint, President and CEO of the GTAA, stated, “Toronto Pearson, as an economic and aviation hub,

“Anywhere from half a day to a day and a half,” said Vic.

I was stunned. Old Sammy would be going nuts if we took more than a couple of hours to rig up and get back logging!

Over to the South Fork Mainline we went, where another spar was working down by the south fork of the Salmon River. We put our boots on and walked by the yarder and loader. Gary Macmillan was operating the hydraulic loader (#107), Chester Watkins, operated the steel spar (#48), and Rick was the landing man. The rigging crew were down by the river. I was introduced to Roger Wright the hooker, Lorne Carson the rigging slinger, and Kevin Yardley was the choker man.

It was getting pretty hot, so Vic wanted Roger to get one of the choker men to help pack the fire pump down to the back end in case of fire.

“Roger, Roger, Roger don’t send it out on the rigging, you know old Chester is a bit spontaneous running yarder and we don’t want

him to drop it,” said Vic. Around the corner went Vic in his pickup and three long whistles sounded and a couple of minutes later, out on the rigging came the fire pump. I was astounded! Where I’d previously worked, you always did what the boss told you, with no questions asked.

After lunch we got the pump running and had a bit of a water fight for a while.

I was sitting waiting for the rigging to come back when Roger said, “try some of this chewing tobacco.” It was a plug and he cut me a piece with his knife. The rigging came back, I stood up and felt kind of dizzy. Brute, the rigging slinger, laughed when he saw this and said, “It’s ok we’ll get this one, sit it out.” I chewed for over thirty years. What a disgusting habit! That was my first day at M&B Menzies Bay Division, thirty-eight years to follow! SP

grapples and more.

Dual drive provides operators with the choice of placing the machine’s wheels directly on the rail for increased traction, or completely off the rail for less wear and tear on the tires and to prevent damage to equipment along the track, such as rail sensors. Like the 106MRail and 136MRail models, the 216MRail is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, enabling the machine to be propelled without the road wheels, leading to considerable savings on tire replacement. Operators also prefer the hydrostatic transmission for its smooth movement on the track.

The upgraded 216MRail, like the original model, features a rail-dedicated boom specifically designed for the rail industry. It offers the lifting capacity of a much larger machine — up to

8.5 tons (8 metric tonnes) on rails over the front — but offers the stability and boom flexibility other machines lack. Its Mecalac articulated boom design provides greater compactness and range of motion by allowing it to extend almost entirely straight or fold back on itself, making it agile in confined spaces. For some larger machines, working below catenaries or in tunnels can be awkward and inefficient due to limited boom angle adjustments. The operator must completely unfold the boom and work at maximum reach, losing force, compromising stability and taking longer to complete the task. Thanks to the extraordinary flexibility of the boom, the 216MRail easily handles heavy-duty tasks even when there is limited space to maneuver.

The 216MRail also improves safety with anti-drop safety check valves, load sensing and flow sharing. A double cab allows space for a second crew member when accessing the job on rails. The cab also has windows on all sides and a low-height hood behind the cab, provid-

ing operators with 360-degree direct visibility.

Rest Stop Upgrades Improve Travel For Truck Drivers

Upgrades and enhancements to key highway rest areas are planned for the summer as part of a multi-year plan to improve safety, accessibility and other amenities along B.C.’s highways.

“Rest areas are an essential part of the highway system and help highway safety by reducing the risk of accidents related to fatigue or the need for people to stop on highway shoulders,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “By providing better facilities for people to take breaks from driving, these improvements to rest areas will help make travelling through our province safer and more comfortable for commercial truck drivers and everyone who uses the highway network.”

The Province is supporting improvements at rest areas through a new $100-million Safety Rest Area Improvement Program over the next nine years. Of that, $28 million will be spent over

the next three years to support the trucking industry and other travellers.

In 2023, improvements, such as installing new lighting and signage, updating playground equipment, increasing accessibility and improving rest area facilities, grounds and picnic areas, are planned for:

• Highway 1 Arbutus rest area on the Malahat Highway north of Victoria;

• Highway 1 Kamloops Lake rest area west of Kamloops;

• Highway 1 Skuppa rest area south of Lytton;

• Highway 97 Mile 80 rest area north of Fort St John; and

• Highway 16 Cluculz Lake rest area east of Vanderhoof.

In addition, as many as 30 seasonal students will be hired to provide landscaping and enhanced maintenance of rest areas, covering several highway corridors throughout the province.

Longer-term planning, engineering and design work is also underway on substantial improvements at several key locations that will specifically support the trucking industry, including:

• Highway 1 Kamloops brake check west of Kamloops;

• Highway 1 Columbia rest area west of Revelstoke; and

• Highway 5 Clapperton brake check north of Merritt.

Government will also explore options for commercial vehicle access and parking to be built along Highway 1 near Golden. Planning, engineering and initial site development will start this year.

“This funding is especially important for commercial drivers who work long hours and require safe and accessible stopping places, so they can be focused and well-rested while they are on the road,” said Dave Earle, president, BC Trucking Association. “The

more facilities that are accessible to large commercial trucks, the more drivers will stop and recharge when they need to.”

Planned improvements will also include upgrades to charging stations for electrical vehicles at the Anarchist rest area along Highway 3 and the Wire Cache rest area on Highway 5. Faster charging stations support the further development of the province’s “electric highway” and help meet the Province’s Clean BC Roadmap commitment for 100% of vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2035.

The Province is also reviewing and updating its rest area management plan to evaluate current needs and help guide future improvement projects across the provincial highway network. The provincial government is responsible for more than 200

rest areas throughout B.C., of which 86% are wheelchair accessible and 69% can accommodate commercial vehicles as large as and including semi-trailers. Approximately 13% of rest areas have electric vehicle charging stations and 6% have a wireless network.

Since 2017, the Province has invested approximately $28.5 million into more than 60 sites, including the construction of new rest areas and enhancements to existing areas, such as improving facilities, accessibility, lighting and signage, as well as the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. Alberta Strengthens Rules Protecting Roadside Workers

Keeping all Albertans – workers and drivers – safe on the road is a priority. Alberta has been one of only two provinces without move over legislation, but Alberta’s government has changed that.

To increase safety for all roadside workers, starting Sept. 1, drivers in the lane closest to any roadside worker vehicle stopped at the side of the road with its lights flashing must slow down to 60 km/h or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower. Drivers must also move over to the far lane if it’s safe to do so and take reasonable steps to allow other drivers to move over as well.

Currently, only tow truck drivers and first responders are protected under the Traffic Safety Act, but now all roadside workers stopped on the side of the road, with their flashing lights activated, will be covered by these protections.

“This is a common-sense rule change,” stated Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. “If you see any flashing lights and people working on the side of the road, slow down to 60 km/h or move over to make an open lane beside them. We want to protect our police, paramedics, maintenance workers and tow truck drivers so they can get home safely at the end of the day. These people proudly serve Alberta, and we want to make sure we look out for them.”

Ontario Provides $1.3M To Help Train Potential Truck Drivers

The Ontario government is investing $1.3 million to prepare 54 women, newcomers and others from underrepresented groups for in-demand careers in the trucking industry.

Across Ontario, at least 6,100 more truck drivers are needed to fill job vacancies and to ensure families and businesses receive goods on time and the province’s economy reaches its full potential, the province said in a news release. Only two per cent of Ontario truck drivers are women, which is why the program will reimburse up to $4,500 for childcare and other living expenses.

“This innovative program will help break down barriers to attract more women into the trucking industry,” said Premier Doug Ford. “As we build Ontario, we’re going to need all hands-on deck. That’s why our government is working hard to ensure that all skilled occupations are more accessible and welcoming for women and all underrepresented groups.”

Led by the Women’s

Trucking Federation of Canada, this free project will provide participants with up to 200 hours of training needed to obtain AZ (tractor-trailer) and DZ (straight truck) licenses. Instructors will use both virtual reality systems and in-cab, hands-on training to teach jobseekers how to operate a commercial vehicle, perform manoeuvres, conduct inspections, maintain the vehicles, and understand commercial vehicle systems and controls.

“Truckers are the everyday heroes who keep the wheels of our economy turning, and we need to ensure more people have a chance to explore these purpose-driven careers,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “I was proud to make Ontario the first

province in Canada to guarantee truckers the right to access washrooms, and our government will continue to invest in training to ensure everyone in our community gets a shot at earning bigger paycheques for themselves and their families.”

The project will also cover training for forklift operation, defensive driving, workplace violence and harassment, and human trafficking awareness. After completing the program, the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada will work with graduates to ensure they are employed as professional drivers.

“This investment in the trucking industry directly helps more people achieve fulfilling careers as professional drivers,” said Shelley Walker, CEO at Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada. “With a significant and

growing skilled driver shortage facing Ontario’s trucking industry, this initiative is timely in both removing barriers to employment and supporting Ontario’s economy. We thank Premier Ford and Minister McNaughton for their leadership and support, and look forward to working with them on this incredibly important initiative.”

To remove barriers to participation, participants will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 for transportation and childcare support, $300 for equipment and a $400 weekly

How to Make Health & Fitness A Priority While On The Road

Staying healthy and fit when you work a lot is already a huge challenge for most people. Whether sitting behind a desk or, for truck drivers, who spend their days seated in one position for hours at a time and the next day do it all over again.

It is quite challenging to stay fit while on the road almost every day. Frequent and regular exercise can help both body and mind and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. The secret is that the drivers don’t need a full gym or endless hours to remain active. It can seem almost impossible, but many veteran truckers have figured out the tips and tricks to combat the health challenges their job presents.

The image of a trucker in America is that of an individual that sits all day in their truck, hauling cargo across the country, and sometimes this stereotype is true. What is also true is that every physi-

cal activity, regardless of difficulty, boosts your fitness. You should always condition your body through warm-up exercises first.

According to Mayo Clinic, warming up removes muscle soreness by increasing blood flow to the target muscle groups. Apart from that, warming up opens your lungs for aerobic activities by jolting your cardiovascular system into action. If you want to ease into other, more demanding activities, warming up prepares your body and muscles for it.

Everyday warm-up activities include jogging in place, sprints, jumping jacks, and power walks. You don’t need to have access to a treadmill; a quick run for a few minutes till you break a sweat does wonders.

Windmills are also important for warming up the arms and upper body muscles. By swinging your arms over and over — aim for 100 reps but

listen to your body and don’t overdo it — you will remove tightness in the joints and get the body ready for action.

For anyone to stay fit, you need to make a conscious effort to carve out time to move or exercise every day (even just 15 minutes). You just need to make you a priority, find time every single day. If you start each day with exercise, even just a brisk walk, you’ve already won and won’t need to stress about making time for it later when your schedule becomes more unpredictable.

Running is an excellent cardio workout for truckers because it helps you exercise all muscle groups in your body. If you run 2-4 miles every day (15-30 minutes), your body will maintain a toned shape. That may seem like an unattainable obstacle at first, but starting slow and steady is key — literally walk before you run, as the saying goes, and start with a mile, then two, and so forth.

And if you don’t want to get away from your truck, you can run around it and use it as a mini track. By going around the truck 30 times, you’ll cover the equivalent of 1 mile. Again, you can powerwalk the same distance if you don’t want to run — the main ingredient here is movement, and some is better than none.

If walking isn’t your thing, try biking. It’s a lot more fun, low impact, and is great at burning calories and building tendon and joint strength in your knees.

Career truckers prefer folding models under 35 pounds so they can stow easily in the cab.

There are plenty of compact, space-saving exercise accessories you can store easily in the cab; more than enough to get an awesome workout.

If you’re serious about making time (30 minutes a day or one hour a few times per week), consider bringing along:

A yoga mat

Any basic yoga or exercise mat will do. Lay it out in the cab, if you have space, or out in the grass so you can do push-ups, crunches, planks, and more.

Adjustable dumbbells

Resistance bands

Kettlebells

Kettlebell workouts help to build strength and endurance in your lower back, legs, and shoulders. Aside from the obvious perks (muscle building, cardio, flexibility, etc.), kettlebells are great because they are quick. Kettlebell swings are a favorite amongst truckers. This one simple movement works your back, shoulders, quads, and glutes. The Kettlebell is a very versatile piece of equipment.

Jump rope

Jumping rope requires a certain amount of athleticism and coordination to get started, but when you’re ready, a jump rope takes up zero room in your truck and can scorch calories at an extremely efficient rate. Ten minutes of jumping rope can roughly be considered the equivalent of running an eight-minute mile.

Portable Pull-Up Bar

Bring along your adjustable bars for morning and evening pull-ups. Hook both ends to the doors and adjust them to fit.

Gloves

You likely don’t need any specialized workout or weightlifting gloves, though they can help, but you’ll want something to cover your hands if you choose to do push-ups or other bodyweight exercises outside of the cab.

Many truckers feel it is important to find time to walk (or run if you’re up for it) several times per week. Just getting up and moving your legs can help combat the effects of sitting all day, promote blood flow and circulation, and burn enough calories to keep you trim and fit.

While you’re driving here are a few exercises you can do. However, BE SAFE and always stay focused on the road.

Hand stretches – Move your wrists and hands as often as you’re able. Rotate your wrists to keep the blood flowing. You can also squeeze a tennis ball with one hand to promote grip and forearm strength. Stress balls can be used for this too. They reduce overall stress and anxiety. They distress the hands and build strength and flexibility in the hands. Stress balls also help prevent the development of hyper-

tension and possible heart disease. They are safe and can very effectively be used to help to relieve anxiety and tension in the hands and shoulders.

Stress balls are used by just squeezing them rhythmically.

Shoulder shrugs & rolls –Loosen up your shoulders by shrugging them up, holding, then releasing. Also try rolling your shoulders in a circle from back to front.

Neck rolls – Gently roll your neck in a circular motion, 360 degrees. This will stretch and alleviate tension in those muscles while promoting blood flow.

Exercise can contribute to more sound and restful sleep. Physical activity increases time spent in deep sleep, the most physically restorative sleep phase. Deep sleep helps

to boost immune function, support cardiac health, and control stress and anxiety.

Exercise releases serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline which are all brain chemicals associated with feeling happy and putting you in a better mood.

It seems logical to assume that exercise would drain your energy and make you tired, but it literally creates energy in your body. The body rises to meet the challenge for more energy by becoming stronger. It all begins with mitochondria. Located in our cells, they work like tiny power plants to produce energy.

Exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. They are the body’s immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies circulate more rapidly, so they can detect illnesses earlier than they might have before.

Exercise also increases blood flow, gets the heart pumping blood throughout the body faster, and helps flush the blood through the arteries.

When exercising regularly, the bone adapts by building more bone and becoming denser.

Breathe - Unlike full-on cardio routines, breathing exercises only focus on airflow into the body. You don’t need any equipment for this workout; you just need to breathe in and out. While aerobic exercises decrease stress levels in the body (and you should do them), so does focused breathing. When hauling loads over long distances, you can do deep breathing behind the wheel. And you can always park your truck and do breathing exercises before continuing the journey.

Also, to stay healthy, you may want a seat cushion. There is a huge variety of pillows that are designed for various diseases. Choose the best truck driver seat cushion that’s right for you.

Journaling is another good way to keep track of food and exercise. Keeping a diary allows truck drivers to identify unhealthy eating and workout habits. If they notice a pattern in their eating and exercise, they can make changes.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial to the wellbeing of a truck driver. The hours behind the wheel can be long and exhausting. To combat these challenges, truck drivers can download

apps on their phones that can help them keep a healthy lifestyle. Also, make sure to get adequate sleep each night. While most people don’t prioritize sleep, truck drivers should make time for it to rejuvenate their bodies and keep their minds alert.

Aside from exercise, you can also keep yourself hydrated. Drinking water regularly can help you stay alert while on the road. It is recommended to consume at least 64 ounces of water per day.

Many health problems have been attributed to dehydration. Despite your thirst, your body does not signal you to drink water until it is dangerously dehydrated. Always keep a bottle of water nearby to replenish your body’s fluids.

Another way to stay fit while on the road is to make sure that you take short breaks every few hours. This will help you maintain healthy habits and keep your mind busy. Try to stay in touch with your family and friends.

A Trucker’s Tale: Wit, Wisdom, and True Stories From 60 Years On The Road

In the Preface to his humorous memoir, Ed Miller warns: “I don’t have many tall tales to offer—the stories in this book truly happened to me or to truckers I know,” comparing his recollections to fish stories that grow and change over time. Stories that change as they are passed from CB radio to CB radio.

Ed’s story begins on the farm, growing up with his boisterous trucking family. His love of trucks and equipment stems from his hardworking granddad, Obie, and the adventures he and his siblings would get into on the farm.

In the late 1960s, Ed joined the Navy Seabees as an equipment operator and truck driver, and promptly got shipped to Vietnam. In the book’s section “Military Trucking,” Ed weaves a fascinating tale of this troubled time, with gruff humour and a frank look at the challenging conditions.

One story in particular that had me chuckling, was when Ed had to truck a load of steel plates on a flat

deck, which weren’t particularly well tied-down. When rounding a corner on a twisty jungle road — at top speed, of course — the load slid off the deck and almost took out a jeep transporting a Colonel! Ed then had to endure the humiliation of watching the Colonel teach him how to properly tie down his load, using every rope and chain available. Lesson learned!

Back home after the war, Ed’s trucking life began. Starting in the days before cell phones and GPS navigation, Ed recalls the many challenges truckers faced when longhauling without the use of those modern conveniences.

then later when he became a transportation manager at many of the steel shipyards in the eastern U.S. This book is full of those characters, both good and bad.

Ed Miller met many colourful characters over his decades on the road, and

Ed Miller was born into a family of truckers in North Carolina and began driving tractor-trailers at age thirteen and moving trucks around his family’s farm or backing them into the dock at the warehouse yard. He has more than forty years of management and ownership experience in many aspects of the motor carrier industry, including flatbed, van, refrigerated, specialized, and transportation brokerage. From 2003 to 2010, he worked in the Office of Freight Logistics at Maryland’s Department of Transportation, where he served on numerous county, state, and national transportation and research advisory committees.

Today he is a part-time school bus driver, working as a substitute/trip driver transporting students or taking school teams to sports events. Ed grew up in western North Carolina and attended East Carolina University before serving in the US Navy Seabees. He is a father of three and a grandfather of two, and lives with his wife in Rising Sun, Maryland. SP
