The Tigercat D7 control system combines a solid and field proven hardware and bucking control system with a Tigercat developed head control and user interface. The system offers powerful functionality, simplicity and intuitive operator navigation.

There are two types of bucking control available for D7. Priority-based bucking logic utilizes a list of operator-entered log specifications sizes to determine how best to process the tree. D7 Optimization level uses a value-based logic. Using multiple layers of matrices correlating price, demand, and production limits to each log size un-

der each tree species, the control system optimizes each processed tree to achieve the best value. These matrices are usually programmed by the timber buyer.

Reporting

Both Tigercat D7 Priority and Optimization levels offer StanForD Classic, StanForD 2010, and PDF production reporting based on contracts, operators, species, and product groups. The reports provide total quantity and volume, as well as per species and product group quantities and volume. Reports can be viewed on screen, or exported for lat-

er analysis. D7 also sends production volume data to RemoteLog®, Tigercat’s optional telematics system.

GPS integration D7 can be equipped with a GPS receiver and the GeoInfo software. This provides an active naviga-

tion application using the machine’s current position on a georeferenced map. Work site maps can be viewed on the in-cab display screen, allowing the operator to easily view the site layout, track the movement of the machine, and

“Demands for new tech nology, operability and user friendliness are growing ever higher. Rototilt Control is our response to the grow

ing needs we are witnessing on the market. Above all, what we are hearing from the end users themselves,” explains product manager Caroline Jonsson.

It has a new touch screen and allows the user to op erate the SecureLock safety lock directly in the display with just two presses of a

Increased Energy Efficiency

In addition to ease of use and control, the launch entails increased energy and fuel efficiency. This is thanks to the unique pres sure-compensating hydrau

lics in the tiltrotators.

“With the RC series, the machine’s hydraulics do not need to use more pow er than necessary to oper ate the tiltrotators, which saves energy. The new hydraulics will provide the

opportunity to use more types of hydraulic work tools, right from the basic version. The power is used where it is needed most, and improves parallel oper ation with hydraulic work tools,” explains Jonsson.

All excavator opera tors and machine owners with products that use the Open-S standard can also look forward to the new RC series. Since Open-S was launched by Rototilt and Steelwrist in 2020, the number of members has grown steadily, includ ing the engineering giant Volvo.

“We believe that com petition drives innovation and development, and consider that end users should have options as regards the products they use without compromis ing on safety. For every excavator size, there is a crusher bucket model that can transform a construction site into a recycling center.

Every construction site - whether small or largegenerates waste. Inert ma terials of all kinds have to find a new life, a new use, considering the difficulty in finding raw materials and the time it takes to get them.

Is it possible to recover waste and put it back into the production cycle in a simple, fast, and cost-effec tive way?

Many may not know the solution lies in the operat ing machine already onsite: combined with an MB Crusher, crusher bucket and work the material so that it can be immediately reused or repurposed for other uses.

If the excavator exceeds 30 tons...

Czech Republic - We are still in the Czech Republic, but this time the custom er’s goal is to save on the

costs of landfill disposal or having to purchase or rent a large mobile crusher. The excavator on site is a 36 tons Doosan DX 350 LC to which an MB Crusher model BF120.4 jaw crusher is installed: a weight of 48 tons for a load capacity of 1.7CY and production that can reach up to 69 CY / h.

Mayotte - In this archi pelago of the Indian Ocean, the customer wants to be come independent from procuring materials from the quarries, both to save on transport costs and wait times and to avoid the con tinuous coming and going of trucks to and from the construction site. There are two operating machines on this site, each at work with MB Crusher equipment: a Bobcat T300 with an MBL140 crusher bucket and a Kubota KX080 with an MB-S14 basket screening bucket.

The combined use of these two pieces of equip ment mimics an actual re cycling center: the waste material is screened with the MB-S14, separating the fines from the bulk, then crushed by the jaw crusher, and fi nally reused directly on-site for filling trenches.

Grove is offering a new heavy-duty jib extension for the Grove GRT9165 rough-terrain crane that in creases the 165 USt (150 t) crane’s utilization abilities.

It provides a competi tive edge for setting precast concrete panels, as it’s eas ier to transport and faster to set up than competitive cranes for tilt-up work.

The jib is 12.5 ft (3.8 m) long and designed with two sheaves, for up to four parts of line, and is hydrau lically offsettable from 0° to 50°. The compact but stout jib has a max lift ing capacity of 68,600 lbs. The new jib has up to 20% greater capacities on aver age than its closest com petition. The two-hook

design gives operators tight precision when positioning panels, with the hydraulic jib controlled via an in-cab switch for faster operation and convenience.

The heavy-duty jib was designed to meet the fastchanging precast concrete panel market, one of the most common off-site tech-

niques used during construction. This type of work is expected to grow 5.6% annually over the next five years alone. Its benefits include efficiency, cost reduction, speed, and more consistent quality. Precast concrete yields added environmental benefits, too, as the hollow core uses half the amount of concrete

without compromising on strength. This results in up to a 25% reduction in a building’s CO2 construction footprint.

Wisconsin-based design-build contractor Miron Construction Co. (Miron) is the first customer to use

the new jib on its GRT9165. Miron’s clients are rapidly shifting to precast concrete for healthcare, warehouse, manufacturing, and higher education builds across the country. The size of concrete panels is growing in tandem with demand, av-

eraging 12-ft (3.7 m) wide and over 24-ft (7.3 m) in height, and weighing upwards of 60,000 lbs.

“It takes a larger crane to lift and rotate the concrete panels and vertically set them in place. Our precast jobs have a short duration

and we wanted to minimize transport and setup costs,” said Pete Klosterman, executive vice president, field resources for Miron.

Miron, Grove dealer American State Equipment, and Grove’s product devel-

opment team collaborated on the development of the jib extension to make it purpose-built for precast.

“We took feedback from Miron to develop pre liminary charts and stayed in close contact through the testing phase, making real-time modifications to deliver a final product that meets the market need

from day one,” said John Bair, Grove rough-terrain product manager.

In June, Miron used the jib to set panels for a new high school in western Wisconsin. The GRT9165 was configured with its full 56,800 lbs of counter weight and working at a max tip height of 124 ft, with a 50-ft radius and ze ro-degree offset.

“It’s great to have the ability to luff the jib up and down for increased or decreased separation as needed, and it’s quick and easy to install and uninstall the jib,” said Luke Rathke, project superintendent with Miron.

The crane’s long boom paired with the heavyduty jib is a bonus when

working under height limitations. It has already allowed Miron to win more industrial work, including at large paper mills where overhead piping and ductwork limit access by other

types of mobile cranes.

“The GRT9165 with the heavy-duty jib is the perfect package for what we need. It has strong capacities and precision for precast and is a solid all-around crane for the wider range of work

we do,” Klosterman said. “We must be more efficient and versatile in how we approach our jobs. You’ve got to stay ahead of the game, and it helps when the equipment we’re using can make that happen.”

The 2022 update comes with some major upgrades. First, there is the new Cat erpillar C7.1 engine, avail able in 275 or 302 horse power, depending on the emission level. There are also new, latest-generation hydraulic pumps, and new and upgraded electronics including new control units and sensors. The oil cool ing system now has a sin gle radiator with anti-clog ging frame. The fan system is now proportional (to not waste energy), reversible (a big help when maintain ing and cleaning the ra diators) and equipped with hydraulic controls (for bet ter reliability). One day, Dad stood at my bedroom door and asked, “How’s the school thing going?”

“Not good,” I said. “I can’t seem to grasp that ‘Algebra stuff.’ Why?” I asked.

“They need a choker man at Greensea Bay,” Dad said.

“Okay,” I said. “Would Mother drive me to the ‘Sched’ in the morning?” The Sched was the plane that did regular deliveries

to outlying areas.

At 8 o’clock the next morning, I was at Tyee Spit getting on the Cessna 172 headed to Sonora Is land. Bill the foreman met me at the dock, showed me the bunkhouse where I changed into my loggers’ clothes, and into the pick up and up the hill to the setting where the logging was going on.

That day we were mov ing the steel spar. They had moved it off the main

haul road to log a corner of the setting that had dif ficult access. The D-8 Cat was hooked to the spar mounted on an M-4 tank undercarriage, and they were yarding it up through the brush and stumps back to the main road. I was in troduced to Phil the Hooktender, and we got to work rigging up the spar tree to log the cold-deck pile they had just yarded.

It was only a small crew, as Nories had only

one spar at this location, one logging truck (#9), one TL 15 loader (which Nories had rebuilt), and a dump machine.

I was the last guy in camp, so I had to ride up the hill in a war surplus prisoner truck. There were no handles on the inside, so someone had to let me out from the outside.

The settings had lots of big hemlock and balsam trees that grew in this black loam soil, which we called “loon shit”. When we got to camp at quitting time, we would hose each oth er off, then change in the bunkhouse.

After my shift ended, I got back into the plane and went home. The next day, I went to school and told Walter the vice-principal, “I quit!”. He was disap pointed; he said I would have made a great doctor or lawyer. Yeah, maybe if I hadn’t broken mother’s wooden spoon a couple years ago!

After we had finished logging the settings, Doug, the dump man, switched to using a 988 to dump #9 and run a small dry sort. Some of us on the rigging crew got a quick learning experience on how to be boom men from Fred, who appar ently had some previous experience at booming. All the big logs had been boomed up when we got there. We had to deal with the pulp logs which were pretty small. I was usually wet up to the knees, but I didn’t fall in!

After the booming was done, all the equipment was loaded on the barge

heading to Port Neville. Bill came into the cookhouse one morning and told us the plane would be in to

When you are at the sharp end of underground mining, wear and tear is unavoidable. And no where is it sharper than for buckets and the shrouds fitted to them. In the most abrasive conditions, the shrouds can wear out in just a few hundred hours of work. Replacing them – especially when they are welded on – can take multiple shifts: valuable hours where the machine is out of action and pro ductivity dented.

To speed up this pro cess, in 2001 Sandvik in troduced its Shark range of Blue Pointer ground engaging tools (GET) –becoming the first reten sionable shroud system for the underground mar ket. Blue Pointer can be

summarized as shrouds using mechanical fix ings that are significantly faster to replace. Even though the system is the market leader in under ground mining, nothing is perfect and everything can be improved. With that in mind, in 2018 Sandvik set about de veloping a replacement – MAKO. But the com pany did not do it alone, but in close cooperation with internationally re nowned specialist min ing contractor, Byrnecut.

Introducing MAKO Ground Engaging Tools

MAKO continues the shark theme, with a Mako being a shortfin predator – the name literally means ‘shark tooth’ in Ma¯ori. On

the eve of its global release, MAKO brings with it several advantages; an innovative patented locking mecha nism, hammerless removal system, cast corners im provement (patented), and additional wear indicator, just to mention a few.

By far the biggest im provement in terms of reducing downtime and cost-per-ton-mined can be found in the MAKO corner shrouds. Normally, cor ners – who have a much harder life – tend to wear out and need changing at the mid-life point, com pared to the rest of the shrouds. In extreme con ditions an additional two ‘half corners’ can be need ed for every set of normal shrouds. But thanks to improved material and

design, with MAKO there is no need for part-life re placement corners.

Designing a new GET is one thing, making sure it performs in the toughest conditions is quite another. That is why every MAKO prototype was tested in the field. Byrnecut was in strumental in this process, trialling the concept at one of its most abrasive sites –the Capricorn copper mine near Mount Isa in Austra lia’s Queensland. “Sandvik came along with a team of engineers and said: ‘Right, are you willing to help us develop MAKO?” says Gary Boswell, Byrnecut’s chief maintenance super

visor at the mine. “So, we got on board and had a good working relationship with Sandvik. Right from the start we were looking for the same outcome – to lower total-cost-of-own ership and achieve a 1:1 [corner:shroud] ratio – so that we only changed cor ners when we changed all the other shrouds.”

The Capricorn mine has five Sandvik loaders (LH621) fitted with 10.7m3 buckets. Boswell expects to get 7,500 hours out of a bucket, and because of the aggressive nature of the rock, replaces the GET every 500-550 hours, on average. That is roughly 14 sets of MAKO per bucket life. So, making them last longer and easier to change all-in-one-go can make a significant difference to downtime and cost over that lifetime.

Metal Where It Matters

MAKO has not achieved its durability performance by simply adding more metal. It’s put metal where it matters, and the overall MAKO system has a very favorable weight/perfor mance ratio.

The first MAKO Ground Engaging Tool was fitted at Byrnecut’s Capricorn site in January 2019. Despite the remote location, the buckets were monitored

by Sandvik’s experts on a weekly basis. It soon be came clear that the new range was especially du rable – lasting on average 12% longer than the best of the rest, as well as avoiding the need for half-life corner shrouds.

MAKO: A Truly Hammerless GET System

“The first prototype we thought was okay, but there is still room for im provement,” says Michael McCormick, the Shark Loadmaster who was hands-on with the develop ment of MAKO. “The feed back we got from Gary and the team at Capricorn really helped us understand the issues they were having. When something cropped up, we could quickly de velop a short-term ‘hotfix’, before developing a longerterm solution. For instance, we found an opportunity to improve the locking sys tem and had to adapt the pin assembly to ensure the push-off feature was truly hammerless. As is natural, we had some performance issues with earlier proto types, and it took us a cou ple of goes to get it right. But the ability to work in real time with Gary’s team was the key to enabling us to respond rapidly with quick fixes and validating their effectiveness.”

“Safety is paramount,” says Gary Boswell, “and we did not want our guys hammering or using oxyacetylene to get the shrouds off. But Sandvik fixed that with the pushoff feature that can handle worn-out Ground Engag ing Tools, even those with lifting lugs eroded through use. The issue of transport

“At Meritor, we are committed to putting outof-service vehicles back on the road as soon as possi ble,” said Jeff Amalfitano, senior product manager for Meritor. “As we continue to innovate our DOD pro gram, this new update will reduce the time it takes to report and replace cus tomer driveshaft orders compared to the emailbased submission process.

The initial launch of the DOD program took place in 2017 to increase turn around time for customers who required a replace ment driveshaft. Product lines included in the pro gram are the Meritor Xtend ed Lube MXL, Meritor Permalube RPL 20/25/35, Dana Spicer 10 Series, 1610/1710/1760/1810 and Dana Spicer 140/170/250/350. In 2020, the program was expanded to include Canadian manu facturing locations to fur ther improve lead time in

Armour: A Driving Force In Atlantic Canada

Armour Transportation Systems has grown to be one of the top fleets in the Atlantic region’s transportation industry.

Although it started out as a small one-man operation back in the early 1940’s, Armour Transpor tation Systems has grown to be a driving force in the Atlantic region’s transpor tation industry throughout the years.

“The founding father, Gordon Armour, started with one truck hauling hay and gravel out of Tay lor Village in New Bruns wick and the company has certainly grown since then, both organically and through acquisition,” says Chief Operating Officer, Ruby Collins. “We’re quite proud of our presence in Atlantic (Canada) today.

Headquartered in Monc ton, the transportation solutions provider has op

erations in freight trucking, warehousing, and logistics as well as final mile cou rier. The company oper ates primarily in Atlantic Canada, with business into Quebec, Ontario and the United States. A large fleet of specialized equipment is used in all of its operations and the employee base has grown to nearly 2,000 people which includes pro fessional drivers, owner/ operators, dock workers, mechanics, administrative staff and warehousing em ployees.

It’s a tough business to be in these days and the challenges in the market place today are certainly not just an Armour prob lem, they’re an industry problem.

“We work diligently as a team and manage the sup ply chain restraints and the pressures within the mar ketplace daily. It requires daily management,” adds Collins.

Labour is a number one constraint and a concern, not just for the transpor tation industry, but indus tries at-large. An industry steeped in tradition, Col lins says they certainly rely on the company’s histori cal successes to see them through challenging times, but there is a requirement for some out-of-the-box thinking when presented with times like these which are certainly unusual in the market.

Seaboard Transport ac quired the company last

April; however, the two respective trucking busi nesses continue to oper ate separately. According to Collins, Seaboard is focused on the bulk trans portation market while Ar mour is focused on general freight transportation.

“Both companies are well established in their re spective markets and their professional teams bring their own skills and exper tise to the company,” she explains. “Our teams have been engaged in collaborat ing and sharing practices between both operations as part of our continuous improvement efforts.”

She says the Seaboard and Armour cultures are very well-aligned and the company remains commit

ted to investing in facilities and equipment which will support future growth with in the Armour business.

“Both are private fam ily-owned and family-run businesses focused on safe, reliable transportation of central goods to the market and that is certainly some thing that is front-and-cen tre for both operations and we will not deviate from that path for sure.”

Seaboard and Armour remain focused on creating value for people within the organization and providing opportunities for growth and since the acquisition last April, the shared prac tices and the opportuni ties for people within each organization has become quite an opportunity.

She feels exciting times lay ahead for Armour as it focuses on investing in fa cility upgrades and equip ment replenishment within its fleets.

“Enhancing the qual ity of our facilities, our footprint and certainly the equipment that we operate is really the biggest change that we see in the shortterm.”

Safety is paramount for both operations as part of

their mission and overall daily operating culture.

“It’s something that we are very proud of – our safety records- and it is a principal by which we con duct business in both op erations.”

Career opportunities within the transportation industry are ample and diverse and according to Collins, it’s their desire to attract more young people into the industry. They continue to work heavily with schools to be a place where students who are developing their profes sional skills see Armour as a place of abundant career opportunities in a variety of roles.

There’s a significant labour shortage, not only in the professional driving pools, but in the technician trades, the warehousing operations, logistics, dis patching and finance.

“This business is pan demic-proof, recession proof and our goal is to at tract young people into this business because we feel that they can really support their families and have a great career.”b

PACCAR will work with Cummins Inc. to offer the new Cummins X15N natu ral gas engine in Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks. The X15N is the first natural gas engine to be specifical ly designed for heavy-duty truck applications with up to 500 horsepower output. The engine will include the integration of the Cummins Clean Fuel Technologies fuel delivery system.

“PACCAR can help cus tomers achieve their busi ness goals by offering sus tainable, affordable power solutions that use proven engine technology and ex

isting infrastructure,” said John Rich, PACCAR chief technology officer.

PACCAR, Cummins and several customers including FedEx Freight and Knight-Swift will demonstrate the ability to achieve lower carbon emissions for long-haul transport using internal combustion engine tech nology.

“The X15N is essential to our commitment to help customers reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and to improve NOx. Im portantly for the customer, the X15N will reduce the

cost of adopting low emis sions technologies for their fleet, and gives them the confidence to do so, built on the strong foundation of more than 30 years of experience with natural gas,” said Srikanth Pad manabhan, Vice President and President, Cummins Engine Business.

When operating on re newable natural gas, also known as RNG or biometh ane, the X15N engine will be able to achieve major reductions in the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks. This can range from a 90 percent reduction to carbon neutral, or even carbon negative, depend ing on the bio-source and waste feedstock used to produce the fuel.

The new X15N is ca pable of lower NOx levels than the 2024 EPA and CARB standards. Equally impressive is the 1,850 ftlbs. of peak torque output provided by the X15N, which will provide opti mum performance when paired with Eaton Cum mins Automated Transmis sion Technologies HD and XD Transmission. b

Power management company Eaton an nounced its eMobility business has introduced a single-stage vent valve for electrified vehicle (EV) batteries. The valve acts as an overpressure relief for the vehicle’s battery pack.

“As the electrified ve hicle market continues to grow, battery packs are becoming progressively more powerful and cre ate more heat. OEMs are designing new safety sys tems to ease the impact

of thermal events,” said Jens Buhlinger, manag er, Battery Technology Development, Eaton’s Vehicle Group. “Our new battery vent valve is de signed to enable rapid overpressure release in the battery pack.”

A battery pack ther mal runaway situation can occur when indi vidual cells inside the unit fail due to physical impact or short circuit. Eaton’s single-stage bat tery vent valve can be precisely and flexibly

designed to meet specific opening pressures and optimize venting. The valve’s proven reseal ing technology allows Eaton’s customers to specify very low opening pressures and testing for 100% functionality com pared with the conven tional burst-valve tech nology commonly used in the market today.

“Our new battery vent valve features an easily assembled quick-connect technology, reducing complexity for battery pack manufacturers while ensuring a robust connection that stays in place,” Buhlinger said. “Our quick-connect feature was developed based on proven technol ogies from our more than 30 years of experience in safety-critical fuel emis sions venting.”

Eaton plans to add new technologies to its battery safety offerings, including a dual-stage valve that incorporates all the features of the sin gle-stage version as well as humidity management solutions for inside EV bat tery packs. b

Kenworth has pub lished a comprehensive, 152-page online body builder manual focused on Kenworth’s medium duty conventional lineup

ranging from Class 5 to light Class 8 models.

The 2022 Kenworth Medium Duty Body Builder Manual features a clean, easy to read for

mat with new click-to-go links to speed spec’ing choices. The manual of fers 10 detailed sections featuring an Introduc tion, Safety and Compli

ance, Dimensions, Body Mounting, Frame Modifi cations, CAN Communi cations, Electrical, Power Take-Off (PTO), After treatment, and Routing. It contains information and guidelines useful in the truck body planning and installation pro cesses. Also offered are listings with name and page number for both the manual’s 30 tables and 127 figures for quick, easy reference.

The Kenworth manual is especially useful when specifying a new medium duty truck, particularly when the body builder is involved in the vehicle definition and ordering process. Early in that pro cess, body builders can often contribute valuable information that may help reduce the total body in stallation cost. This key information helps to en sure that the truck is spec ified correctly and set up appropriately for the body builder.

Kenworth’s medium duty conventional line features the Kenworth T180 (Class 5), T280 (Class 6), T380 (Class 7) and T480 (light Class 8).

In addition, the Kenworth T380V and T480V mod els are for vocational ap plications. The Kenworth models are offered with the 6.7-liter PACCAR PX-7, 8.9-liter PACCAR

PX-9 engines. The nearzero emission Cummins 8.9-liter L9N and 6.7-liter B6.7N natural gas engines also are available.

The Kenworth me dium duty vehicles are designed to serve an ex pansive variety of appli cations, including cargo and reefer van, beverage, tow and recovery, utility, mechanic service, fuel oil and propane, landscap ing, fire, dump and mixer. The trucks may be speci fied with either a standard low roof or a raised roof option. The low roof is 63 inches tall, 4 inches short er than the raised roof, making it ideal for heightrestricted applications.

The Kenworth trucks offer three hood types to support the lineup’s appli cation versatility – short aero hood (107.5-inch BBC) that accommodates front axles from 8K to 20K lbs., medium aero hood (109.5-inch BBC) for higher horsepower and AWD applications, and Kenworth’s vocation al ‘sloped’ hood for the T380V and T480V.

The robust yet light weight, PACCAR TX-8 automatic 8-speed trans mission is standard for the

Kenworth medium duty trucks. The transmission has a maximum torque rating of up 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque and 57,000-lb. GCWR.

Haulmaxx EX provides the versatility needed for trucks that operate both on-and off-highway. The suspension’s equalizing beam distributes the load equally between both ax les in off-road and uneven terrain conditions and pro vides 17 inches of diagonal articulation. The innova tive design eliminates fixed center bushing pivot points to reduce wheel hop. An integrated jounce stop provides overload protec tion to maximize the life of the progressive load springs and bolster springs. The tire clearance was in creased on Haulmaxx EX to include packages with

315 tires and 9 inch steel wheels while continuing to meet the SAE standard for tire chain clearance.
