Yanmar Debuts New Compact Track Loaders

Yanmar Compact Equipment launches its entry as a comprehensive compact equipment solutions provider at CONEXPO 2023 with a new line of compact track loaders.

The TL65RS, TL75VS, TL80VS and TL100VS are construction-grade machines featuring the company’s performance, efficiency, technology and reliability standards.

Ranging from 67 to 103.5 horsepower, the new compact track loaders cover a wide range of customer needs. They round out Yanmar’s compact equipment lineup already made up of mini excavators, compact wheel loaders and tracked carriers. The new line is ideal for construction work, rental applications and more.

“These new compact track loaders create a full line of

compact equipment and we are excited to bring more value to the market with the reliable products we’re known for,” said Buck Storlie, product manager, Yanmar Compact Equipment. “Customers love our mini excavators for their quality construction and trusted performance in any conditions and now those benefits will be available in our compact track loaders.”

Yanmar introduced the TL65RS, TL75VS, TL80VS and TL100VS at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2023, in Las Vegas.

pact track loaders are construction-grade and include extra durability for the construction, landscaping and rental industries. Reliable Tier 4 Final Yanmar diesel engines offer an additional performance boost. The operator experience is a key focus in the machines with premium 360-degree visibility and a standard suspended seat for enhanced comfort. A removable roof hatch escape offers an optimized safety feature for operators.

Efficiency

The models also include several optional efficiency-enhancing features to improve the operator experience and overall productivity. These include a work tool positioner, return-to-position technology, self-leveling, ride control and auto 2-speed capabilities. These intuitive features help improve productivity on the jobsite and level out the learning curve for new operators to expedite the training process.

Technology

The loaders incorporate Yanmar’s optional SmartAssist telematics from the company’s mini excavator line. Features range from error de-

tection and notification to real-time operational status updates and daily work reports. SmartAssist also includes integrated theft protection, allowing the machine’s owner to set a range from a specific location and trigger an alert if that range is exceeded. A state-of-the-art, touchscreen 7-inch color display also comes standard with each of the new compact track loaders for improved convenience on the jobsite.

Reliability

True to Yanmar’s reputation for reliability,

each machine will have a 2-year/2,000-hour warranty and a suspended undercarriage with a pivot link system at the rear axle for added resistance to tough jobs. This linkage technology uses a spring load to reduce oscillation and stabilize the machine, helping to improve material retention and ride quality. Combined with highly durable bar-tread tracks, Tier-4 Final engines and convenient serviceability features, Yanmar’s new compact track loaders provide maximum ROI.

Liebherr Introduces New Wheel Loaders

Increased performance due to new lift arms, more engine power and optimized travel drive

For the first time, Liebherr presented its new mid-size wheel loaders as well as large wheel loaders from its XPower series at Conexpo 2023.

The new mid-size wheel loaders feature a significant increase in performance compared to the previous models. As a result, these new wheel loaders are prepared for demanding operations in various industries, such as extraction, recycling or the timber industry. In addition, Liebherr offers several intelligent assistance systems for its mid-size and large XPower wheel loaders. These include, for example, active personnel detection with brake assistant or the revised camera system Skyview 360°.

The new generation of mid-size wheel loaders consists of three models with bucket sizes between 2.9 and 3.9 yd³ (2.2 and 3.0 m³) in the standard version. They are characterized by a significant performance boost. The new L 526, for example, offers 20% more engine power and over 20% higher breakout forces than its predecessor. The L 538 and L 546 models also feature performance increases in all areas: the optimized travel drive, for example,

provides increased traction to ensure that the new wheel loaders accelerate dynamically in everyday work and can penetrate powerfully into all kinds of materials.

This is the business place of those wearing working-man boots…contractors, construction workers, orchardists, farmers, DIY weekend warriors…anyone needing to rent or purchase heavy-duty or compact construction equipment. This new Kelowna location is Pacific Rim Equipment’s second Okanagan Valley location with the original and head office still in Penticton.

Family Owned. Family Run.

Pacific Rim Equipment is truly an Okanagan familyowned business with today’s principals being brothers Dean and Dave Garnett. But the history goes back a number of years when their father, Ted Garnett, then the owner of Penticton’s Nor-Mar Truck & Equipment, the International Truck dealership, sold that business to one of his good friends, Gerry Turchak.

But like many true entrepreneurs, Ted was not ready for retirement. So in 1981, he had Garnett Equipment up and running, buying and selling a ‘few’ machines. The business grew exponentially to become one of the key heavy construction equipment suppliers, not only in the Okanagan Valley, but throughout British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon and even the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Business Model Change

As the business grew, Ted began to realize that he was going to need some serious help, and in 1989 convinced his son Dean to leave his established mining career in Alberta and return home to Penticton to help ‘dad’. This move resulted in a company name change to Pacific Rim Equipment and a somewhat revised business model that saw the company begin pur-

chasing good, used construction machines and equipment from Japan, importing same and reselling them here. This proved to be a very successful business venture with the company importing and selling up to 200 machines per year. Together, Dean and his dad saw the company prosper until Ted, ‘who always knew the value to a good deal’, finally figured out that, slowing down and looking for a good fishing hole, was actually ‘a very good deal’. In 1997, Dean’s brother Dave joined the company as a part-

ner. However, unless the fish were biting, Ted could still be found somewhere around the business ‘keeping an eye on things’ until his untimely passing in 2018.

“One of the many things we learned about and from our dad,” stated Dean, “was that his business drivetrain did not have anything but forward gears…there was no reverse.”

Customer Inconvenience.

Solved.

Kelowna is generally regarded as the larger and

fastest growing of the three Okanagan Valley cities.

Brothers Dean and Dave knew that a number of their customers were having to travel down-the-valley to Penticton and they in turn were having to deliver both machines and parts up-thevalley. This was a potential business opportunity that was not lost on them. Together, they began looking for property that would allow Pacific Rim Equipment to have a convenient and highly visible location in

Kelowna, the business heart of the valley. Success in this endeavour followed, and in January 2023, Pacific Rim Equipment cut the ribbon on a brand new sales, rental and maintenance facility at the corner of Highway 97 and Edwards Road on the north side of Kelowna.

Now came the question as to who should manage this new Kelowna location. Keeping it in the family was critical. However, both Dean and Dave were well established and involved in the day-to-day operation of the original Penticton location.

Dean’s daughter, Bailey, had joined the company in 2015 and was working in marketing and promotion. She proved to be a business natural…the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree… and soon she began assisting on the sales and rental side. When asked

why a young woman would consider joining what was a male dominated business, Bailey, with a huge smile, responded, “I like working with our customers and the equipment, it is like playing in a big sandbox, I love it.”

So on the day that the new Kelowna store opened, the company appointed Bailey Garnett as General Manager. A roll for which she is a natural, and success is surely following.

A Growing Market

“We are excited to be able to more conveniently service our long-time Kelowna customers and, of course, welcome many new ones. This new location also allows us to expand our ‘new’ customer base well into Vernon and the north Okanagan,” stated Bailey. She went on, “The rental market for us is really growing. We currently have over

250 machines in our entire rental and sales fleet and at least 70 are on site here in Kelowna. We turn our rental fleet over each year allowing us to provide our customers with new or only slightly used machines, just when they need them. We are family and are service driven and we never want to say no to a customer. Although he is no longer with us, I am confident that Grandpa Ted would be proud of what we are accomplishing. Following in Grandpa’s footsteps, we are constantly moving forward…there is no reverse here.”

Alberta Expands Skilled Trades Seats At SAIT

Alberta’s government is investing more than $900,000 to expand trade seats so more Albertans can access apprenticeship programs and keep Alberta’s economy growing.

Alberta’s economy has momentum, and the government is focused on even more job creation and diversification as Alberta continues to be the economic engine of Canada. Skilled trades offer valuable, well-paying jobs and are critical to the province’s diversifying economy.

Alberta’s government is investing $900,140 through the Apprenticeship Learning Grant (formerly the Technical Training Grant) to fund 134 new trade seats at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) so more students can start a rewarding career in Alberta’s talented skilled trades workforce.

“Alberta’s skilled trades are recognized nationally and internationally for excellence,” stated Kaycee Madu, Minister of Skilled Trades and Professions. “Graduates from apprenticeship education programs start their careers mak-

Horizontal Grinder

Astec Industries debuted its newest Peterson horizontal grinder recently at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 5710E is particularly suited for land clearing operations or other applications where mobility is desired. The horizontal grinder is equipped with several features designed to improve efficiency and help operators reduce material handling costs.

The 5710E features a larger rotor that can accommodate a greater number of grinding bits. “The new rotor is 8% larger and 19% heavier than the previous model,” stated

Michael Spreadbury, product manager for Astec. “More mass means more grinding power.” To keep up with this improved power, the screening area has also been increased, to allow for greater throughput.

Additionally, the grate change process has been simplified. While weight and size have been increased where it counts, the machine is lighter overall. “In our redesign process, we’ve examined how to maximize efficiency and simplicity at each stage of the grinding process,” explained Spreadbury, “You see that from the rotor to the screens, and even in the new compression roll cylinders, which offer better downforce to help process material as it is fed to the rotor.” SP

Skills Roadmap Helps People In The Mining Sector

More people will be able to pursue fulfilling careers in mining through the Skills Roadmap Report, which identifies British Columbians’ future skills and training needs within the mining sector.

“There are a lot of opportunities for British Columbians to find rewarding careers in mining,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “The Skills Roadmap is a step towards bringing more labour certainty to the industry as a whole and helping people receive the training they need to bridge the skills gap for good jobs today, tomorrow and beyond.”

The Skills Roadmap Report was recently completed

by the B.C. Centre of Training Excellence in Mining. It fulfils a recommendation from the B.C. Mining Jobs Task Force to develop a cohesive roadmap for enhanced miningsector training to meet the sector’s future skills and labour needs through a collaborative, inclusive, innovative and geographically focused approach.

“Mining is a vital contributor to our economy in B.C., helping to create family-supporting jobs for thousands of

people throughout the province,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “By providing forwardlooking strategies, the Skills Roadmap is helping to meet the mining sector’s future skills and training needs and workforce development.”

Astec Launches Next Gen RP Pavers

Astec Industries launched its newest highway class asphalt paver at the recent CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The RP-175 and RP-195 F series track pavers have upgraded styling, simpler maintenance and enhanced operator experience.

Keith Hagy, product manager-paving for Astec says, “When we begin any project, determining what the customer needs is the key. Our customers told us we have always been open and honest with their feedback, and we take it to heart.” The company focused on efficiency, durability and operator comfort achieved through modern styling, solid castings and innovative reconfigurations.

For example, new lightweight hoods make accessing daily maintenance areas quick and easy, with no need for hydraulics. Hagy explains, “We’ve transitioned to a composite design with our side doors and hoods. Now one person can easily raise the hood and access the engine area without any need for extra hydraulics.”

Additionally, the upgraded models feature a new cooling system, which makes the

paver run quieter and more efficiently. “We’ve gone from a single fan cooling system to a dual system, moved to the top of the machine, blowing away from the operator and away from the ground crew.”

Hagy says, “Noise reduction is important. A quieter machine improves communication among the screed person, the operator and the ground crew, which is critical on a work site.” The new pavers also feature repositioned and redesigned handrails for enhanced safety and comfort.

The overall design of the paver has been transformed and updated to enhance the operator’s experience. Controls have easy-to-use switches, joysticks and touchscreens, each designed to put all the control at the operator’s fin-

gertips. Hagy explains, “With our new touchscreen controls you can easily view your daily production data. You also have a much more ergonomic setting with all the key functions at your fingertips.”

The comfort and safety features do not impede the robustness of the new design.

The new F-model series has a State V engine, meeting the

most stringent emission limitation required in the global market. Hagy said, “With the RP-175 we’ve upgraded to an engine block that is smaller and more compact, but still provides the same commanding torque and horsepower.”

The RP-175 and RP-195 have a redesigned track system for improved durability and ease of maintenance.

Northern Manitoba: Five Mineral Exploration Projects Funded

The Manitoba government has provided $1.7 million in funding for the latest projects receiving support through the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund (MMDF), as managed by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Jeff Wharton announced earlier this year.

“Strategic investments in mining, like in the MMDF, are key to a thriving provincial economy and placing Manitoba as a world leader for respon-

sible mineral development. Our government is committed to continuing to responsibly build on Manitoba’s rich natural resources to attract new investment in the mining sector,” said Wharton. “The MMDF also enables us to foster strong partnerships with Indigenous communities in mineral development activities that benefit the

economy and the province as a whole.”

The MMDF provides funding to communities and businesses including Indigenous groups, municipalities and not-forprofits to advance mineral exploration projects. Financial assistance from the fund can include onetime grants for activities that help advance new mining opportunities, and outreach to First Nations for collaborative resource development, the minister noted.

“Advancing mineral exploration projects is critical to creating lasting economic benefits to communities in northern Manitoba,” said Chuck Davidson, president and CEO, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, and board chair of the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund.

“The MMDF is excited to support exploration projects and to see future partnerships emerge from these projects.”

The projects approved in this latest round of funding support 55 North (Lynn Lake), Boreal Gold

(Flin Flon), Alamos Gold (Lynn Lake), Foremost Lithium (Snow Lake) and Callinex Mines (Flin Flon).

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the MMDF’s application review committee and board of directors conditionally approved $1.7 million in project funding resulting in close to an $18.5-million investment to support mineral exploration activities, drill programs and consulting services for community engagement. The MMDF has approved 50 mineral exploration projects for a total of $7.7 million in funding in Manitoba since its inception in 2020, the minister said.

The Manitoba government has committed to annual investment in the MMDF of up to six percent of tax revenues from the Mining Tax Act, which are collected at a graduated rate on profit generated by mining businesses, the minister noted.

Working At Cox Logging

Part 2 of 2

Cox’s had another steel spar, a “Skagitt telescoping” tower. Jeff would run this tower until Norm the new operator showed up. We rigged this one up in a setting with about five feet of snow on the “felled and bucked” timber. We had a hell of a time, if the logs were too small they just broke, if they were too big the choker broke. We weren’t getting much wood for Dick, the TL 6 operator, and plane pilot to load.

A few days into the shift, I was on the bank unhooking the turn, when a loud “BOOM!!!!” scared the crap out of me!! It was the Snow Birds; this was the area over which they practised their acrobatic maneuvers. I think they were toying with our emotions. You never knew which direction they were coming from or what time, they were really close, you could almost see the pilots grinning. Many times they flew below us. They used a pretty big area for practise; I wondered if they toyed

with any other logging sides around the area?

The heart of most camps was the cookhouse and Cox’s had a great cook — Don Wocks was his name. Most cooks would have a pot of oatmeal on the stove in the mornings. I would have oatmeal, half of grapefruit and maybe a couple of pieces of french toast. On steak night I would eat 4 steaks with all the mushrooms, pan fries and onions to go with them and then a half of a pumpkin pie. The cook asked if everything was good. We said the pie would be better with whipped cream. The next day we had whipped cream. Dick the loader operator would fly the plane to town every day he would pick up parts and other stuff that was needed. Dick’s wife had been one of my teachers in school and I hung out with his son, Eddie. We would skip school and hang out at their place.

There was a native guy, Bill Johnston, who worked on the boom. He would get a piece of cedar about 2 inches

thick, 2 feet wide and about 6 feet long. Every shift he would carve a ceremonial native canoe paddle which he would sell for $100. His room was full of cedar shavings and the made the bunkhouse smell great. I’ll always remember I went into the shitter one day, sat down and Bill in the next stall said, “You full of shit too, ehh.” “Not for long,” I said.

At the end of one shift, there was a howling southeaster blowing. We we worried if the planes would be flying. Mike Kelly, the boom man, said he had room in his speed boat would I like to go. It was a pretty nasty boat ride. The plane had even more trouble flying just above the water in heavy fog. They finally put the plane in at Elk Bay and got the airlines to send taxis to Elk Bay.

Logging wasn’t going so good one night Norm quit, I’d had enough so the next morning both of us were on the sked. SP

Felling Adds Low Pro Heavy Duty Models

Wideset heavy construction equipment like mid-size crawler excavators and dozers can be challenging for any seasoned equipment hauler. The equipment is typically oversized, particularly heavy, and unique in shape (length, height, and width). The LP HD has been designed and engineered for transporting heavy (near 50-60K load capacities) wideset loads, like excavators, dozers, and other construction equipment.

“As equipment continues to get bigger and wider, how weight is distributed can make or break a trailer,” said Nathan Uphus, Felling Trailers Sales Manager.

“Our LP HD series tag has been designed and engineered to accommodate equipment that has an 8’-8.5’ wide track gauge (center to center of tracks), which will concentrate the machines weight directly over the side rails, typically 10’+ overall width machines (some examples: Deere 200/210, CAT 320/323, Komatsu PC210). This has been accomplished along with incorporating the standard features an operator wants and needs,” continued Uphus.

The LP HD series currently consists of two models; the FT-50-3 LP HD triple axle 25-ton and the FT-60-4 LP HD quad axle 30-ton (4

axle legality varies by state/ providence). The available deck lengths for the triple axle are 24’, 26’, 28’, and 30’. The available deck lengths for the quad-axle are 28’, 30’, and 32’.

The Low Pro Heavy Duty (LP HD) series is constructed with a 10” structural channel full-length side rail (flanges out), Jr. I-Beam crossmembers 12” on center pierced through the heavy-duty, engineered, and fabricated 16” tall mainframe beams, and is standard with 1-3/8” apitong decking. The LP HD design was driven by the needs of wide-set heavy loads, with the flange-out side rail construction it allows for optional outriggers to provide additional support and load distribution.

Apitong decking is an extremely durable wood, making it ideal for construction equipment applications. The LP HDs are standard with a 6’ long double incline beavertail providing 12-degree and 6-degree load angles, respectively. The double incline feature eliminates the sharp break-over point, which substantially helps load/unload tracked equipment safely. The 6’ double incline beavertail is constructed with 5” x 3” selfcleaning angles. The 6’ x 20” ramps, like the beavertail, are

built with a 5” x 3” self-cleaning angle, spring-assist construction, or optional air ramp configurations depending on the equipment/operator’s needs.

NASA’s X-59 Hauled With XL Specialized’s MDE

Late last year it was announced that, as a result of the Inland CharityDRIVE campaign, Inland Truck & Equipment had been awarded the CASE Construction Equipment’s prestigious Community Builder Award. The CharityDRIVE was Inland’s, company wide team endeavour that, along with the support of CASE Construction Equipment and their customers, raised over a quarter-of-a-million dollars for Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon.

Now, the Inland Truck & Equipment team, along with the CASE Construction Equipment team, are hard at work in preparation to once again be a Presenting Sponsor for the ultra-successful August Family Foundation’s Okanagan Dream Rally. Search & Rescue personnel as well as Inland customers and the general public.

“This is such a great turnout for our first Tour of Honour hosting event,” stated Rick Datoff. “Yes it is the Tour of Honour but it is our honour to host everyone today. This is such a wonderful project to get behind.”

Navistar Launches International S13 Integrated Powertrain For Vocational Market

The S13 Integrated Powertrain, developed in collaboration with the TRATON Group, demonstrates advancements in robustness, reliability and performance. This latest announcement showcases a continued commitment to customers by setting the foundation for the next generation of vehicles, technologies and comprehensive ownership solutions.

“The S13 Integrated Powertrain is the most advanced powertrain we’ve ever produced and the lightest vocational powertrain available on the market,” said Mark Stasell, vice president, Vocational Truck Business. “The S13 Integrated will benefit vocational customers by achieving stellar performance, simplicity and serviceability, and superior operating economy.”

This launch expands upon the current S13 Integrated Powertrain customer offer-

ing. Navistar first introduced the S13 Integrated Powertrain for the on-highway market in August 2022, available in the International® LT® and RH™ Series models.

Developed from a clean sheet design, the S13 Integrated Powertrain consists of three distinct components – an engine, a transmission and an aftertreatment system – all designed and developed concurrently to ensure maximized compatibility and integration between systems.

Engine and Aftertreatment Capabilities Save Time and Capital

The S13 Integrated Powertrain maximizes performance and capitalizes on efficiency made possible through its modular design in global collaboration with the TRATON Group.

The 13-liter International S13 engine achieves advanced

fuel efficiency and performance through a clean-burn combustion strategy and a reduction of friction and pumping losses. The S13 engine is Navistar’s first engine designed with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology as the primary emissions reduction technology. The absence of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler on this engine allows for nearly 100 percent of exhaust to flow to the fixed geometry turbocharger, equating to more power and improved engine performance. Additionally, the engine operates on low revolutions and high torque which equates to fewer fuel injections and less fuel consumption, delivering up to 515 horsepower and 1,850 lbft of torque.

The compact design of the Dual Stage Aftertreatment is purpose built with easy access for serviceability, as well as

significantly improved emissions control and fuel efficiency. To keep temperatures at an optimal range and extend service intervals, the aftertreatment system includes a dual-stage SCR catalyst system in a one-box design.

Since an EGR cooler was eliminated from the combustion process, less soot and particulate matter are generated. This cleaner combustion cycle allows for extended service intervals and eliminates the need for the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and active regeneration.

“Vocational trucks often spend quite a bit of time idling on a job site which has historically required more frequent active regens,” said

Stasell. “The aftertreatment system of the S13 Integrated Powertrain, combined with the engine combustion strategy, vastly reduces the need for both active and parked regens.”

Transmission and Various PTO Options For Vocational Customer Needs

The International® T14 Transmission, a 14-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), uniquely combines the transmissions low range and six reverse gears through the use of a planetary gear set.

The T14 combines two deep crawler gears and a wide 26.7 overall ratio to provide slow-speed maneuverability, exceptional start-

ability and enhanced performance running to and from the job site.

The T14 Transmission features vocational-specific drive modes including offroad mode, manual mode and paver mode. These drive modes combined with other vocationally focused functionalities, such as split-shaft mode and rocking mode, which breaks the truck free when stuck, prove the T14 is ready for any job.
