NB Association Builds Partnership

A robust workforce is the foundation for strong communities, a thriving economy and a more secure future for all Canadians.

The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are working together to support innovation in the construction sector, and accelerate future developments that will make a real difference for Atlantic Canada.

Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton, has announced a federal investment of $190,612 in the Construction Association of New Brunswick (CANB), through ACOA’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The Honourable Arlene Dunn, Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour also announced

$250,000 towards this project and other related initiatives on behalf of the Province of New Brunswick.

With this support, the CANB is launching a Labour Force Adjustment Committee to develop short and long-term solutions to labour shortages in New Brunswick’s construction sector. The committee — a partnership between federal and provincial governments and various industry stakeholders — will examine challenges and opportunities in the sector. The committee will begin its efforts with a 100-day challenge to find solutions to critical roadblocks such as credential recognition, recruitment, and workplace readiness.

“I am encouraged by the commitment and dedication demonstrated by the Construction Association of New Brunswick and the new Workforce Partnership to address the overwhelming needs in this sector,” said

Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton. “The launch of their 100-day challenge marks a critical starting point to removing barriers and finding innovative solutions that can make real change for our communities.”

Volvo CE Adds Two New Compact Excavators

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is bringing two new compact excavators to North America.

ECO mode and an auto engine shutdown in addition to the existing auto engine idle. With auto engine shutdown, hours not worked are not recorded, keeping the machine operating efficiently for longer while reducing maintenance costs. This also contributes to a 10% boost in fuel efficiency.

Because of the customizable hydraulics flow setting and work modes for a wide range of attachments and applications, it is easier than ever to set up these excavators for any task.

The new 3.5-ton EC37 and the 4-ton ECR40, will provide increased operator comfort, 10% more fuel efficiency, better stability and easier maintenance. These models replace the EC35D, ECR35D and ECR40D.

Tigercat Industries is pleased to announce that it has built and shipped its 30,000th machine in January 2024, just over 30 years into its existence. From humble

beginnings in 1992 when Tigercat had a single product, very little dealer representation, and produced just a handful of machines, the company has grown

steadily, expanding both its production capacity and product breadth.

A few quick facts

• Tigercat debuted the 726 feller buncher in April 1992 at a forestry equipment show in Quitman Georgia.

• By 1995, Tigercat had two drive-to-tree feller bunchers, two track feller bunchers, and two bunching shear models with distribution in Canada and the United States.

• By 1997, Tigercat had a full product line to offer southern US dealers with the addition of a knuckleboom loader and the industry’s first successful, serial production hydrostatic skidder.

• In 2000, Tigercat was well on its way to becoming the dominant player in steep slope harvesting applications, offering a six-wheel drive skidder and the L830 feller buncher. Both were destined to become flagship products for the company. In addition, Tigercat entered the vegetation

management sector with its first mulcher carrier. The range of carriers and attachments that have followed are crucial inputs to wildfire mitigation strategies in many regions globally.

The Warrior 600, since rebranded as the Titan 600, is an entry-level scalping screen that provides a cost-

effective solution in high volume, smaller sized, or recycling applications. From overburden to recycling to a host of aggregates applications, the Titan 600 has excelled both as an independent compact screen and a complement to a crushing train. Their compact and agile nature has benefited difficult to access applications, such as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and recycling, which also makes them excellent prospects for rental fleets.

Choosing Crusher Buckets As Primary Crushers In A Quarry Setting

Key elements to consider when choosing MB Crusher crusher buckets as a primary crushing plant.

Quarries put a strain on the machinery fleet traditionally used on construction sites. What is needed is machinery that is reliable, durable, easy to maintain, safe, and provides high productivity to cope with the hectic pace of the mining industry.

So what are the key elements that made customers choose an MB jaw crusher as their primary crusher in the quarry?

Profitability

In Egypt, a customer had accumulated a large amount of unused basalt in his quarry.

However, storing these huge piles of material was costly, so he installed an MB Crusher BF120.4 jaw crusher on his Doosan 340 excavator, to process the rocks directly in the quarry and reuse them on site for internal road maintenance work.

Before using the MB Crusher he had two choices: either take the material to another quarry where there was a large crusher plant or bring a mobile crushing plant to the quarry. Two solutions that would still have proved pricey. Just as expensive as stockpiling the material.

Versatility

Let’s continue to explore quarries around the world, one customer in Italy uses an MB jaw crusher as a primary crusher to reduce extracted talc, for concrete production. In addition, the crusher bucket is also used to process aggregates for the concrete

needed for underground mining. By installing a BF135.8 crusher bucket on a Cat 365 excavator already in the quarry, the process became more efficient: in fact, the excavator easily crushes the material in different areas of the quarry, without needing to haul more equipment or material to and from the site. A very profitable operation.

Saving time is crucial to cutting costs, and MB Crusher buckets can easily streamline the job. Suffice it to say that installing the equipment and adjusting the jaws to change the output size takes less than half an hour, eliminating the need to take the machine to a specialized shop.

Flexibility and quality

A concrete example is given by an Indian customer working with basalt. By installing the BF90.3 crusher bucket on a Komatsu PC200 excavator, the customer was

able, by setting the size of the output material to his customers’ requirements, to achieve an excellent quality end product, resulting in an increase in demand of their material.

Burnt Stuff

On the steel spar crew it was the landing man’s or chasers’ unofficial job to have a fire in the landing. Grapple yarding and loading crews had a crummy to keep the saws and stuff in. He was to make sure there were enough seats for everybody. At lunch the crew would dry their gloves and maybe toast a sandwich. The chaser would build a toasting stick out of a forked branch.

Weave some haywire back and forth at the fork to form a basket to set your sandwich in or pizza. Sometimes the fire was a bit hot and you burnt your sandwich, but you ate it anyway because that’s all you had and later on when you burped a cloud of charcoal smoke came out. On Fridays everyone would bring something to share with the crew. We liked it when somebody brought some of the big game

they had shot. Lots of times you would bring a can of soup to put on the engine manifold of the machine to heat up and it exploded. Or one time Wally Johnston put something in tinfoil on the manifold. He had grabbed his daughter’s watermelon and she had a cold pork chop for lunch.

Two towers were working in Big Tree 20, the J-77 was in front of the J-48. Bob Eliason on the L-323 was loading out of the back tower. We couldn’t yard because we didn’t want to block the road for the logging truck. We went up to the standing timber and got a fire going. Brian MacKenzie had hung the block and strap on a large yellow cedar tree. There was a bit of a hole in the bottom where we got some dry stuff to get the fire going. Standing by the fire warming up our gloves, we are looking at the fire, glancing at the hole in the tree and grinning. Pretty soon we scooped the burning embers into the hole. It was so foggy

and rainy that it was hard to see the top of the tree. When the fog cleared you could see it was about one hundred feet high with a broken top. Pretty soon smoke started coming out of the top. The fire at the bottom was really burning it was starting to melt the grease out of the haul back strap. We blew the whistle for strawline but the operator and chaser were in the bus, ignoring our whistles. One of us had to run down to the landing and let them know what was going on. We had the strawline back pretty quick once they saw the flames shooting out of the top. We got the block moved and hung on another tree and moved over to where we could see the fire. After a bit flames started shooting out of the top and then the top third burnt off and fell to the ground. Foreman Harold Brownson drove into the landing looked up the hill and then left the setting he never said anything to us about it. When we got back the next day there was a huge hole in the ground.

It’s a Friday evening, I’m sitting at home and I have the scanner on. I have some logging frequencies and cops channels on it. I can hear the afternoon shop crew on there. They were talking about a fire out on the MS-Hookup road. Turned out it was a yarder on fire. Next morning I went out and took some pictures. Apparently someone had left a lit cigarette in the cedar debris on the ground around the yarder. Skip Feller on the L-324 had to assist in getting the tower down and loaded up for transport.

Another burnt offering was the H-444 logging truck. It was entering a corner as it was proceeding to the dump when it met a crew bus. Bus came to a stop short of the corner and truck proceeded to pass. Inside shoulder of the road gave out causing the trailer to roll, taking the truck with it. It burnt also!! SP

Perkins Introduces New Line Of Repair Sleeves For 1100 Series Engines

Cost-effective solution enables targeted repairs of cylinder bores as a flexible alternative to full engine overhauls.

Perkins has introduced a new line of repair sleeves for its 1100 Series engines, enabling end users to return cylinder bores to like-new performance while avoiding the downtime, expense, and waste of a full engine over-

haul.

Available now worldwide, the Perkins 1100 Series repair sleeves allow technicians to restore individual cylinders to their factory dimensions, allowing the original, standardsized pistons to be retained

and maintaining proper engine balance. This process significantly reduces the amount of material removed from the block, helping to extend the life of the original casting while minimising shop time and waste.

The repair sleeves are composed of the same material as the engine block to match the wear, thermal and machining characteristics. They have been validated by Perkins engineers for optimal stability and durability through physical accelerated wear tests, simulation analysis, and material analysis and specification.

The repair sleeves are suitable for 1100 Series engines configured on off-highway equipment and power solutions in the field since 2003. Daimler Adds Electric Vehicles To Logistics Network

Daimler Truck North America logistics network starts operating electric vehicles in the Pacific Northwest.

Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA) is advancing the transformation of the transportation sector

toward carbon-neutral propulsion systems by integrating battery electric trucks into its own logistics opera

tions. The company will rely on its Freightliner eCascadia battery electric semi-trucks, which were successfully

launched in 2022 and have been available for customers since then. The deployment of the Freightliner eCascadia trucks in DTNA’s inbound logistics network demonstrates their potential within the company’s own fleet. To address infrastructure challenges, DTNA will utilize “Electric Island”, the first-ofits-kind heavy-duty electric truck charging site opened in 2021 in Portland, OR. This site was designed to accelerate the development, testing, and deployment of zero-emission commercial vehicles and provides the necessary infrastructure to support the company’s sustainable logistics vision.

Manac + Power Team Successfully Bid For LVM

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) officially announced General Dynamics Land SystemsCanada (GDLS-Canada), representing the Power Team, as the preferred bidder for its Logistics Vehicle Modernization (LVM) project.

The Power Team, made up of General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada), Marshall Land Systems Canada, Mercedes Benz, Soframe and Manac, will provide the replacement for the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) existing fleet of logistics vehicles, which can be used to transfer resources, personnel and military assets during domestic and international operations and training exercises.

A contract is anticipated to be awarded in spring 2024, conditional on final government approvals.

“The Canadian Armed Forces members deserve the modern equipment required

to effectively perform their duties at home and abroad. This project will provide military members with the needed vehicle fleet while also creating and maintaining highly skilled jobs and contributing to economic growth in Canada.” Said the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, FrançoisPhilippe Champagne.

• National Defence has a requirement to acquire a new fleet of light and heavy logistics vehicles, trailers, vehicle modules, armour protection kits, logistics support and initial in-service support.

• To ensure the fairness and integrity of this procurement, PSPC en-

gaged the services of an independent fairness monitor to oversee the process, including upcoming discussions with General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada. The fairness monitor will provide an impartial report, inclusive of opinions and observations made throughout the monitored procurement activities.

• The competitive procurement process began on March 18, 2019, with the publication of a draft Invitation to Qualify (ITQ). The formal ITQ was published on April 26, 2019, and a list of qualified suppliers was released on July 8, 2019.

• The final draft Request for Proposal (RFP) was provided to qualified suppliers in August 2021 in 2 phases, to allow suppliers the opportunity to review and provide feedback on the primary requirements of the LVM project. The final RFP was released in December 2021 and closed in May 2022. SP

Military Enlistment

Soon after my bobtailing adventure described in my last article, I attended college for one year.

I say ‘attended’ because that is basically what I did. Rather than studying diligently, most of my time was spent chasing girls and spending time at the beaches on the east coast of North Carolina, which were only 80 miles

away. At the end of that first year, the University sent me a letter advising me to take the next year off and to use that time trying to decide if I desired to make better use of my time when I returned the next

year. I should have realized that the military was looking for underachieving college students to fill its ranks for an action taking place in Southeast Asia.

I am abso-damned-lutely certain that being a truck driver saved my life when I served my time in the military.

In March 1968, my father returned from our local barber shop and told me he saw a poster on the the wall depicting a man on a bulldozer

with the caption, “Join the Seabees.” The next day, I visited the local Navy recruiter, and he asked when I would be drafted, so I walked down the hall in the basement of our local library into the office of the Selective Service. I asked Mrs. McIntire when I would be drafted. She pointed to a pile of letters on a desk and replied, “Honey, those letters are going out tomorrow and your draft notice is among them.” I returned to the Navy recruiter and asked, “Where do I sign?”

So, rather than being drafted in 1968, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees, officially known as Construction Battalion (CB). Due to having grown up around trucks, farm equipment, and heavy equipment, I entered under a program titled Direct Procurement Petty Officer (DPPO). My rating was Equipment Operator, Petty Officer 3rd Class (EO3), which was an E-4 pay classification. (Those who didn’t enter the Seabees under the DPPO program referred to us as IPOs, or Instant Petty Officers.) If I had not become a Seabee, I would have been drafted into the Army. Most likely, my Vietnam experience would have been that of a ground-pounder, which could have led to having my name inscribed on the Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC.

When we arrived at boot camp in Gulfport, MS, we received our “scalping” haircuts and we were issued uniforms,

underwear, and many other items which, when properly packed, completely filled the duffel bags we were also provided. Since we wouldn’t need the civilian clothes, we had worn to boot camp, they issued us boxes and Uncle Sam paid for our civvies to be sent back to our homes. When we attended our first classroom instruction the following morning, an officer welcomed us, and then proceeded to inform us that he knew we had all joined the Seabees to stay out of Vietnam. He told us that, although he applauded our fine decision, “I can guarantee that every goddam one of you is going to Southeast Asia!” The man must have known what he was talking about, because within six months, we all went!

During our military training in California, I drove one of the troop-hauling tractortrailers, or cattle-cars, when we went into the hills to play soldier each day, and I never experienced the same “pucker factor” because the hills of southern California were quite small compared to the hills of Black Mountain, NC. Most of us were still kids, so I complied with the cattlecar riders requests to “try to make us fall while we stand,” as I gently rocked the steering wheel from side-to-side as we traveled back and forth from our base in Oxnard. (Due to the extremely low number of good-looking women in Oxnard, CA, Seabees had renamed the town to that of Hogsnard. Maybe the goodlooking women hid from the Seabees so we couldn’t find them!) Included with us kids were at least a dozen older fellows, who had either needed a big change in their lives, or those who various court judges had told to either join the military or spend several years in jail. Most of these guys were hard-drinkers, and some were pains-in-the-ass to us younger soldiers, but they sure-as-hell knew how to operate dozers, graders, backhoes, front-end loaders, and scrapers. Some were even good teachers, so we “young’uns” learned from these experienced equipment operators.

One part of our military training was learning to fire weapons and how to throw hand grenades. On our second day of grenade throwing, a fellow soldier didn’t quite throw his grenade far enough over the wall, and a small

sliver of steel came back over the wall and stuck in my arm. I have never been able to figure out why my question fell on deaf ears when I inquired if I was eligible to receive the Purple Heart!

My first memories of Vietnam happened on the very first day we arrived “in country.” After we walked down the plane ramp, two fighter jets lifted-off the tarmac, and when they went into afterburner mode, the roar scared the s**t out of me, and I hunkered-down because I thought the place was getting hit with rockets, mortars, or something else totally out of the ordinary. No one called me a sissy, nor did they point at me and laugh, since I was only one-of-many who had done the very same thing.

We realized it wasn’t time for us to die yet, so we entered the Danang airport terminal to retrieve our duffle bags. We were all dressed in clean, green utility uniforms, and our boots were all spit polished. Not only were our uniforms green—everything about us was green. We probably also looked green after all the alcohol we had drunk during our just ended 24hour plane ride.

Walking through the terminal, I observed a dozen Army soldiers sitting on the floor and leaning against a wall. The fellows could have had their pictures taken to prove that they were the exact opposites of us Seabees. They were dirty. They wore no socks in their jungle boots. They had not shaved lately. They did not look directly at us, or at anyone else. All of them did have, what we soon learned was the “1,000-yard stare”. They had no smiles; no frowns; no emotions whatsoever; they did not speak to us, or to each other. Now I didn’t think I had lived a sheltered life, but this sight was unlike any I had ever seen. At the time I thought, we Seabees are “Before-Vietnam.” Those Army soldiers were “AfterVietnam.” SP

Design enhancements to the D13 engine include a new wave piston with a shorter piston height, as well as a longer connecting rod; smaller injector needle control valves; a variable vane oil pump; and improvements to the turbo compounding (TC) unit and turbocharger. To further drive the fuel efficiency benefits of I-Shift, Volvo Trucks engineers introduced enhancements that improve shift speeds by up to 30%. These efficiency increases are critical to Volvo Trucks’ customers’ bottom line, while also providing tremendous reductions in carbon emissions.

“Bringing the all-new Volvo VNL to the market has been seven years in the making,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “As we’ve said, this is not just a face lift, it’s a 90% redesign of the product and the platform for all future powertrain solutions. A 10% fuel efficiency increase is the result of radically improved aerodynamics and a dedication to improving upon our already class-leading powertrain offering. Setting the new standard for the North American trucking industry,

these efficiency improvements represent not only a quantum leap forward in the way our customers do business, but also in our collective efforts to reduce carbon emissions. A 10% savings in a nearly 300,000 Class 8 truck market would equate to the same carbon reductions delivered by 30,000 battery-electric Class 8 trucks. Efficiency gains in our all-new Volvo VNL are crucial to our three-pillar strategy for decarbonizing heavy-duty transportation.”

Redesigned Volvo D13 Engine

Improvements to the D13 engine are abundant for the launch of the all-new Volvo

VNL. Engineers looked at every area possible to improve combustion, reduce friction, make a reliable product even more robust, and reduce fuel consumption to increase customers’ uptime and profitability.

Combustion Improvements

Smaller needle control valves in the fuel injectors provide improved fuel flow into the D13 engine’s combustion chamber. The control valve size reduction provides for more precise and rapid control over the fuel flow rate out of the injector tip, leading to improved fuel atomization, better combustion efficiency, and enhanced engine performance.

In 2017, Volvo Trucks introduced its patented sixwave piston, which received broad industry recognition for its results in reducing fuel consumption. With the launch of the new Volvo VNL, Volvo Trucks has introduced an improved seven-wave piston that provides

further directional control of the air and fuel mixture to create even more efficient combustion. Additionally, the piston height was decreased and paired with a longer connecting rod to minimize cylinder sidewall pressure, decreasing friction and improving overall performance. These improvements provide smoother internal movement, reducing parasitic loss and increasing the overall efficiency and engine longevity.

Turbo Improvements

Because the turbo compounding unit on the Volvo D13 engine is a pivotal element in enhancing fuel efficiency, Volvo Trucks engineers focused on opportunities to further optimize its design. To minimize heat loss and increase efficiency, complete insulation was added to both the turbocharger and the turbo compounding unit. Internally, the turbo compounding unit refinements include

a smaller compressor and turbine wheel. This strategic improvement enables the system to recover surplus energy more effectively, converting it into usable power.

“The advancements made in the latest generation of the Volvo D13 engine are nothing short of remarkable,” said Duane Tegels, product marketing manager for powertrain, Volvo Trucks North America. “While our previous generation D13, particularly the D13TC engine, performed extremely well, our dedicated team of engineers were able to seek out and successfully implement changes to make it even more reliable and efficient than ever before. Where there are opportunities to make improvements, our team is focused on continuing to work towards decarbonizing our product offering.”

Variable Displacement Oil Pump

The integration of a variable displacement oil pump within an engine represents a pivotal advancement in optimizing oil pressure regulation while effectively minimizing parasitic losses. This innovative pump employs adjustable vanes that dynamically adapt to the engine’s oil pressure demands, ensuring a consistent and precise delivery of oil throughout various operating conditions. By dynamically altering the vane angles, the pump can tailor its output to match the engine’s requirements, thereby preventing excess oil flow when not needed and maintaining optimal pressure when demanded. This adaptability not only enhances engine efficiency by reducing the energy required to drive the pump but also minimizes unnecessary strain on the engine components, resulting in improved fuel economy and reduced wear and tear over time.

I-Shift Even Faster
