Rototilt Launches New Tiltrotator Series At Conexpo

This is Rototilt’s 6th time at CONEXPO and they promise not to disappoint with the release of a new tiltrotator series, a new control system, an app for remote support and RC Joysticks.

40th Annual AME Roundup Conference Attracts Nearly 6,000 Diverse Delegates

Representation from 39 countries at the global gathering of the mineral exploration industry in Vancouver

At the end of January, the Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) held the 40th annual AME Roundup conference, the largest global gathering of the mineral exploration industry. More than 5,850 geoscientists, prospectors, financiers, investors, Indigenous partners, suppliers, and government representatives from 39 countries gathered in Vancouver to make deals, discover talent and set trends. Delegates from all 13 Canadian provinces and territories were among the attendees.

Kendra Johnston, President and CEO, Association for Mineral Exploration, said: “Responsible mineral exploration and development are critical to addressing our global challenges. AME Roundup 2023 proved that all facets of our industry – mineral exploration, development and mining companies, governments

and Indigenous and community partners – recognize the minerals and metals we discover are Critical to our Future.”

“The transition to a lowcarbon future starts with us,” continued Johnston. “Minerals found in BC — especially critical minerals like copper, molybdenum, zinc, and nickel — create an opportunity for the province to be a key player in the global energy transition. Mineral explorers are searching for critical minerals on more than 230 projects located in all regions of BC, including 178 copper exploration projects.”

“It is with great sadness that GOMACO announces the death of our President, CEO and company cofounder, Gary L. Godbersen. Gary peacefully passed away on January 17, the opening day of World of Concrete 2023. He was 83 years old.

Gary dedicated his life to the concrete slipform paving industry. His career in concrete began in 1963 in Minnesota where he took on leadership roles in two family businesses as President of Highway Bridge Inc., and Vice President of GodbersenSmith Construction Company. In 1965, Gary, along

with his father, Harold, created Godbersen Manufacturing Company (GOMACO) to manufacture bridge deck finishing machines. GOMACO grew to include a full line of concrete paving equipment and became the worldwide leader in concrete paving technology, holding several domestic and international patents for new machine innovations. Gary was a leader within the construction industry, as well, lending his time and talents to all the industry’s major organizations throughout his career. Because of his dedication, he was recognized by his peers for several of the construction industry’s highest honors and awards. He was one of 12 individuals honored as an inaugural inductee into the Construction Equipment Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions to the construction equipment industry. He was a recipient of the Annual American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Award. ARTBA also named Gary as one of the “Top 100 Private

Sector Transportation & Design Construction Professionals of the 20th Century.”

Gary earned the Governor’s Achievement Award from the Iowa Department of Economic Development for community betterment. He was the Iowa and Nebraska recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. He earned the construction industry’s most coveted award, the HartmannHirshman-Egan Award from the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) in 2015. He is also a member of the Construction Equipment Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors pioneering individuals who have invented, managed, built and led the off-road equipment industry.

Gary spent his career traveling the world promoting the advantages of GOMACO’s full line of concrete slipform paving products and advancing the usage of concrete on paving projects. He enjoyed visiting with contractors and finding solutions for their project challenges. He loved his family and took great pride in his children and grandchildren.” SP

Western Global To Introduce New Products At ConExpo 2023

Western Global, a leading manufacturer of fuel and fluid storage solutions, will introduce a new product line and highlight current products in booths S61138 and D2138 at CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2023 March 14-18 in Las Vegas.

With booth coverage both indoors and outdoors, as well as a free educational seminar during the show, attendees will have multiple opportunities to learn about developments in on-site fuel and fluid storage solutions and how to improve fueling efficiency on their jobsites.

Calgary To Host World Petroleum Congress

Hyundai Launches New Compacts, Largest Wheel Loader At ConExpo

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas has revealed plans for its participation in CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2023, with a major exhibit featuring a wide range of new, current and future machine models, plus demos of machine safety and remote management systems. The company’s 31,000ft2 (2,900-m2) exhibit will be located in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth W42501. The triennial construction equipment exposition – the biggest in North America – runs from March 14 through 18.

Among new Hyundai models at the show are three compact excavators – the HX35AZ, HX40A and HX48AZ – that collectively earned a coveted international Red Dot Design Award, honoring the best product and industrial designs from around the globe.

In addition to complying with Tier 4 Final emissions standards, the three compact excavators feature a distinctive new “Tiger Eye” design,

large cabs, larger windows for increased visibility, enhanced operator comfort, load-sensing hydraulics (HX40A and HX48AZ) incorporating adjustable auxiliary flow, zerotailswing (HX35AZ and HX48AZ), 5-in. full color LCD monitor, new auto safety lock function which prevents unintended use of a machine both from an engine and hydraulic standpoint, and five years’ free use of Hyundai’s exclusive HiMATE telematics system.

All three of the new HX-A series compact excavators will be offered in both canopy or cabin versions along with the choice of standard or 4-way dozer blade.

Also at CONEXPO-CON/ AGG, Hyundai will display for the first time its newly available model HS120V skid steer loader and HT100V compact track loader, rep-

resenting Hyundai’s reentry into these compact equipment categories. The two new Hyundai compact models are powered by a 148-in3 (2,435cm3) Hyundai 4HTI4 fourcycle, turbocharged, electronic controlled diesel engine. This new Hyundai engine meets Tier 4 Final emissions standards.

Show-goers looking for full-sized construction machines will find five Hyundai HL wheel loader models, six Hyundai HX excavator models and two Hyundai HW wheeled excavator models, equipped with a variety of productivity-enhancing attachments and quick-couplers. Some of these workhorse excavators and wheel loaders will be featured in demonstrations of Hyundai safety, technology and telematics systems. Used Compressors Can Be A Breath Of Fresh Air

With new equipment supply tight, providing a steady source of quality reconditioned used compressors is a sound – and sustainable – alternative, says Dominic

Giving compressors a full extended second life is more than just good business for Atlas Copco. The company is committed to the circular economy and today nearly every compressor has the ability to be renewed and sent back out into the world for a whole new adventure in the field. And second life needn’t mean second class: users can expect that their OEM revitalized, and modernized compressors perform just like new. That’s not the end of the good news - they are also typically less expensive to buy than new and can play an important role in offsetting climate change.

No Compromise Renewal Process

More than 300 compressors flow through the company’s refurbishment centre in Poland. Here, a team of engineers take the most promising used units, inspect them, evaluate the economies of renewal, strip them, and bring them back to market leading reconditioned status. 300 compressors a year is just the tip of an often-overlooked

iceberg, believes Dominic Fancini, who is in charge of global used equipment at Atlas Copco’s compressor business.

But not all used compressors qualify for renewal. Some have had a hard life and the work involved in bringing them back up to a standard a premium brand like Atlas Copco could endorse reselling means that only the cream of the crop is selected. To find these Atlas Copco scours the world looking for the best examples to recondition.

“We live and die by the provenance of our used equipment,” he says. Buying used can be a risk for everyone, and the chance of making a mistake can be high, so we need to be extremely careful we can guarantee that what we are selling is what we claim.” And only Atlas Copco, as the market leader, can give guarantees to quality assurance in its used equipment.

“Today, the new compressor market is booming,” says Dominic. “But these same machines will – in three-orfive-years’ time – find themselves coming onto the second-hand market. We need to get ready for that influx and have the resources in place to give the best of them an extended and second life.

“There’s very little compromise when you buy used from the people who made the equipment in the first place,” he says. “You get a machine that’s fully reconditioned, and with warranty.”

To do that Dominic and his team buys from trusted sources, such as customers of Atlas Copco new compressors around the world, especially those in the rental sector, but also on the open market from known traders. High pressure and specialty air compressors are the most sought after on the used market. (Given the lowticket price, small compressors are harder to deliver the needed returns for OEMs, given the cost of upgrading them.)

Upgrades More Than Skin

ity is not a quick, simple or cheap process. “It’s a lot more than just a lick of paint,” says Dominic. First the incoming compressors go through a verification stage, where an assessment of what’s needed – technically and cosmetically – is drawn up, and the cost of doing so is calculated. (Ensuring that the likely selling price is sufficient to make the whole

exercise commercially viable.)

Once this is signed off the compressor is stripped, needed parts replaced (e.g., batteries) and items such as starters, alternators etc. reconditioned. The screw element of the compressor unit is also closely inspected for wear.

Sustainability is not an afterthought but has been designed into the compressors from when they were first designed. 100% of the oils used are recyclable, 95% of all body panels are too – and 80% of all major components can be refurbished.

Only Good Things

There are only positives when it comes to giving used

compressors a second life. It’s good business, opens the Atlas Copco brand to a new customer base that might not otherwise buy new machines, and – just as importantly – it’s good for the climate.

“They come back from the finished process looking like they’re new,” laughs Dominic, “Even the decals are perfect.” Then the process of advertising them begins –but these five-star premium used units tend to fly off the shelves, particularly in Europe, where currently half of Atlas Copco’s total yearly stock of reconditioned compressors find new homes. The E18MML is rated for indoor use only, making it an ideal machine for sensitive flooring and finish work applications, including maintenance. Equipped with caster wheels, this model’s Point & Go® steering is the same as the more traditional vertical lift steering style on JLG’s predecessor models.

The Stock Picker Package option, available on both E18 models, includes a fold-down work tray platform with side entry saloon doors, gate alarm and dual amber beacons.

Notable features

These new models come standard with JLG’s fieldproven load-sensing system. This pressure-based system monitors the load of persons, materials and tools in the platform to ensure the ma-

chines’ capacity ratings are not exceeded.

Optimized for durability, the E18s are engineered with an improved roller system on the extension deck and re-engineered mast guards to reduce the potential for debris to accumulate and hinder the operation.

These models are designed with the operator in mind, featuring modern, ergonomic controls and an enhanced entry/exit from the platform. And, their quick change platform system allows operators to efficiently switch platforms in one minute to suit unique job requirements. There are five different platform options, including extension decks and trays, to choose from to increase productivity.

The new JLG E18 vertical mast lifts share commonality with JLG scissor lifts, including toolless entry into key areas, to enhance serviceability. “This reduces familiarization time and increases efficiency with parts, service and maintenance needs,” Mason says. And, she notes, that these models are compatible with the JLG Handheld Analyzer for onsite troubleshooting and are

equipped with the onboard Multi-Display Indicator that provides real-time information on the machine.

Mason adds that these models are also available with market-leading options such as ClearSky™ telematics for fleet maintenance and management, CleanGuard™ for leak containment and a USB charger and phone cradle to give operators extra conveniences in the platform.

“The new JLG E18 vertical lifts are spec’d for productivity,” says Mason. The E18MCL’s platform height is 18-ft indoors and 13-ft outdoors, while the E18MML and the E18 with Stock Picker Package Option models have 18-ft indoors. The E18 models also boast a platform capacity of 450 lbs when equipped with the standard platform. “This is 22 percent more capacity than comparable competitive vertical models in the market,” she says.

Mason adds, “Keeping machine weight low was also very important in designing these machines.” The E18s weigh 1900 lbs when equipped with the

standard platform — a lower gross vehicle weight than comparable competitive vertical models, which are over 2,000 lbs. And, these models are engineered with a zero turning radius and 30-percent gradeability to provide maximum maneuverability in a lightweight machine. “This means that these machines can go on most freight elevators, work on sensitive flooring and fit through doorways,” she finishes.

New & Improved Volvo L350H Wheel Loader Coming To North America

Built to take on the toughest jobs, the upgraded Volvo L350H wheel loader is coming to North America to further enhance customer profitability.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is launching its updated L350H wheel loader in North America, complete with a host of upgrades that will give customers greater productivity and fuel efficiency with lower service costs in a machine designed for a range of heavyduty applications.

“For decades, the L350 has been our flagship loader,” said Eric Yeomans, product manager, wheel loaders, Volvo CE. “We’ve taken a tried-andtrue machine and built upon the features that have made it one our customers rely on day after day. These upgrades make it even more efficient and productive.”

Evolution Of Excellence

One of the more notable improvements on the updated L350H wheel loader is a more responsive hydraulics system featuring new lift and tilt cylinders, and an increased

hydraulic working pressure for 10% faster work cycles and higher productivity.

The upgraded driveline features new Volvo axles and an all-new Volvo transmission, which enables the third-generation OptiShift to be equipped as standard. Already found on Volvo L110H to L260H wheel loaders, this proven technology integrates the Reverse By Braking function and the lock-up function in transmission to boost fuel efficiency by up to 15%. Efficiency is further enhanced by an optimized gear shifting ratio and a new converter that delivers outputs of up to 22% more tractive force depending on the selected gear and machine speed.

The machine also boasts an even tougher form with a more robust upper center hinge bearing and updated frames to accommodate the new axles and transmission.

with durable features that include heavy-duty axles with fully floating shafts, planetary hub reduction and maintenance-free rear axle trunnion bearings.

Productivity features like the Load Assist suite of apps that are accessed from the in-cab Volvo CoPilot display further improve efficiency and uptime. The optional Tire Pressure Monitoring System enables the pressure and temperature of the tires to be checked from the comfort of the cab; this extends tire life and saves on fuel consumption. The On-Board Weighing app provides realtime insight into the load of the bucket and payload of the load receiver. And the Op-

erator Coaching app provides real-time information and guidance to operators, helping them deliver optimum productivity while cutting back on fuel use and machine wear.

Bobcat Company Compact Loader Creators Inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame

Cyril and Louis Keller, the brothers who invented the world’s first compact loader (later named the Bobcat® skid-steer loader), have been selected as 2023 inductees for the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF).

The NIHF annually recognizes inventors, promotes creativity and advances the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship.

In the 1950s, brothers Cyril (April 8, 1922-Oct. 28, 2020) and Louis (May 9, 1923-July 11, 2010) operated a small machinistblacksmith shop in Minnesota together, building and repairing machinery for local farmers. A farmer approached them with a need for a self-propelled loader light enough to be lifted to the second floor of a turkey barn and small enough to clean around the barn’s upright poles. In 1957, the Kellers built a three-wheeled loader with two drive wheels in front and a caster wheel in the rear – the precursor to the modern skid-steer

Keestrack introduced the ZERO-drive machines at Bauma Germany 2022 as there was a growing demand from North European Countries. This equipment has no combustion engines on board anymore. Electric

motors drive most of the mobile crushing and screening equipment and power some necessary hydraulics systems. The majority of the Keestrack product range is already available in ZEROdrive: cone crushers, impact crushers, scalper screens & classifiers, stackers, jaw crushers and the new tracked Apron feeder A6.

“At this point electric drive systems are the greenest and most effective options on the market, as they are more efficient than conventional hydraulic systems. But it also makes the end-user less dependent on a specific engine supplier. If there is no electric plug-in available the enduser can choose his own gen set or select one of the Keestrack (tracked)engine/gen-set units”, says Kees Hoogendoorn, President and Founder of the Keestrack Group.

Dust Suppression

Dust control is gaining more importance due to the changing and growing environmental regulations. As crushing and screening often causes dust, Keestrack added the dust control system to its product range, as current available standard anti-dust systems, which can be installed on crushers and screens, are not always effective.

The W7 mobile dust suppression cannon, with integrated water filter and pres-

sure valve is the biggest in the Keestrack range. It weighs 1490 lbs (675kg) and is standard liftable with a forklift. It also can be equipped with a lifting eye.

How It Works

The supplied water is at a water pressure of 1 to 5 bar. The water will go through a water treatment unit which filters the water from minerals and dust particles. The highpressure pump pushes the water through the nozzles at a pressure of 20bar. The quick coupling nozzles create a mist of micro droplets which is blown further into the air by the balanced and silent fan. Due to the aerodynamic shape of the cone it creates a throw of 230 feet (70m) when the W7 is positioned correctly, in line with the wind. The mist of micro droplets capture the dust particles, they merge, and fall to the ground.

By controlling the size and quantity of the micro-droplets, which can be done by adjusting the spray nozzles, the W7 can create the best solution for your challenge.

The throw, the amount of water, the angle and oscillation can all be adjusted to the specific needs of the process.

Superior Plans For 250-Tons Of Display Product At Conexpo-Con/Agg

Superior Industries, Inc., a US-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, is planning to showcase more than 250-tons of its products at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023.

At least eight of the products will be brand-new and revealed for the first time at the show this spring in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For previous CONEXPOCON/AGG attendees, Superior wants you to know about its new booth location for the 2023 edition of the show. The manufacturer is relocating from inside Central Hall to outside in the Silver Lot.

“Inside is climate-controlled and comfortable,

but our equipment and our people were born to be in the great outdoors!” says Corey Poppe, Superior’s communications manager. “In addition to our massive display of equipment, we’re incorporating lots of fun elements that only work in the open air. Things like 20,000 square feet of artificial turf, grilling and grill giveaways, laid back patio-style seating, and maybe we’ll even roast a few marshmallows!”

Here’s a brief preview of some of the products Superior plans to showcase:

Expanded Cone Crusher Portfolio

Two brand-new cone models will be introduced and be shown alongside Superior’s trusted Patriot Bushing Cone. First, the Dakota™ Bearing Cone, which will earn credibility for its efficient use of horsepower per ton, a straightforward lubrication

system, and a wide range of liner profiles. The other new cone crusher will be called the Endeavor™ Spider Bushing Cone. Operationally, it’s an uncomplicated design that accepts a wide range of feed sizes with an adjustable stroke for fine tuning. Superior also plans to display its Liberty Jaw, Valor VSI, and Sentry HSI crushers.

New Portable Plant Utilized in Recycling

Designed to process in recycle applications, Superior’s says its brand-new Portable Sentry HSI Closed Circuit Plant will get plenty of attention under the Vegas sun. It’s equipped with a patent pending recirculating conveyor, which centralizes the crusher feed for full utilization and extended wear life of the HSI’s blow bars. Other highlights include application-specific grizzly configurations, interchangeable cross conveyors,

and screen media below the grizzly section.

New Quick to Erect Modular Wash Plant

According to Superior, its increasingly broad portfolio of Fusion Modular Platforms are a good match for aggregate producers seeking semi-static plants that are easy to install and maintain with a more economical price tag than portable plants or design-build projects. On display, the company plans to erect a 8x20, 3-deck Guardian Horizontal Wet Screen Fusion Platform with an Aggredry Dewatering Screen attached to one of the discharge points.

Telescopic Stacker Builds 200,000-Ton Stockpiles

In 2023, it will mark the eighth time Superior will display its famed TeleStacker Conveyor at CONEXPOCON/AGG -- and each show there is new technology to showcase and new success stories to share. With radial travel, variable height and a telescopic conveyor, TeleStacker Conveyors stockpile material in a way that overcomes material segregation. This show, Superior will display a 42” x

170’ XTP Swing Axle model with a working automation panel that visitors can interact with in the booth.

Conveyor Components to Reduce Maintenance Duties

Once again, Superior will display a wide variety of its own conveyor components. In fact, the manufacturer is planning to show more than three dozen individual idlers, pulleys, scrapers, and other conveyor accessories. New products include a redesigned line of Exterra Belt Cleaners with some brand-new options, a modular Load Zone Skirting System for dust and spillage control, and unique Application-Specific Idler Bearing Seals for longer-lasting idlers in demanding conditions.

Superior Updates Belt Cleaners

Superior Industries, Inc., a US-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, made some tweaks to its Exterra Conveyor Belt Cleaners, which will reduce time required to maintain the popular scraping systems.

First, a new fast-acting click tensioner is available for the primary and secondary models. After installation, operators simply twist the tensioning unit for a prescribed number of times to set proper force. Click count instructions are conveniently labeled on the aluminum housing that protects the springs.

Second, Superior’s SFL

scraper models are now manufactured with a special extruded tube. It’s designed to house the patented springs and seal them from fugitive material. The abbreviation SFL means “Set for Life”. Exterra Belt Cleaners with this SFL option require tensioning just once at the time of installation. Accurate tension is

maintained automatically — with no required maintenance — for the entire life of the blade.

Third, Superior’s conveyor components engineers recently completed lab and field testing on a proprietary new mix of polyurethane, which is poured into molds to form the blades. This longer-lasting material is also more flexible, which endures beating from belt splices and wears more effectively. All blades are developed in-house by Superior. There are several models of Exterra Belt Scrapers in both aggregate and mine duty constructions. Blade widths are available up to 102-inches (2,590mm). SP

How To Regulate Systems In A Portable Compressor

Why are regulation systems so vital in a portable compressor?

And how do they differ to those suitable for a stationary machine? Guy Laps, Technology and Innovation Manager at Atlas Copco, explains.

Integrated within a compressor are systems that play an essential role in regulating the machine’s flow, pressure, power and speed to name a few. The equipment keeps a compressor – and thus an overall project – running optimally, without any setbacks.

The regulating systems offered by Atlas Copco are designed to afford efficient operation and high performance, while helping to avoid any unnecessary running costs for the user. But before we look at the specifics in closer detail, it is vital to clarify that the systems in place for a portable compressor can differ a lot from its stationary counterpart.

Mobile vs Stationary Stationary compressors are – by definition – im -

mobilised, and typically remain in a factory or allocated compressor room. They feed compressed air into multiple destinations/ tools, which is first routed through a piping system with a large buffer in place. Some use a simple ‘on-off’ regulating system, meaning once the desired level of pressure has been achieved the system will shut off or go into ‘no-load’ state (idle without producing air). It will remain this way until the pressure in the system drops below a threshold, or air demand increases.

For mobile compressors however, the requirements greatly differ. They typically feed a single application; have one user; and a much smaller buffer compared to the stationary application. Mobile machines can have an extremely varied demand in air, and therefore require regulating systems that

can cope with such variations.

VSD is key

Having a regulating system that can efficiently react on fluctuations will lead to meaningful energy and cost savings. Thanks to its state-ofthe-art Variable Speed Drive (VSD) technology, Atlas Copco’s mobile compressors adjust their operating speed in order to match air production to demand in real-time.

The VSD technology uses a combination of two regulation parameters: first is speed regulation, which is the most efficient means to control air demand; and second is ‘throttling’ – closing the air inlet of the compressor element –which is less efficient. Atlas Copco VSD compressors always prioritise speed regulation, and only use ‘throttling’ when it is no longer possible to go down in engine or electric motor speed, in order to adjust the final percentage of

required capacity.

Fixed speed compressors, on the other hand, are incapable of adjusting their speed. They can only operate at full capacity and are obliged to control air demand via the inefficient ‘throttling’ process. Using this type for operations where demand for compressed air fluctuates will lead to a significant amount of energy being consumed and wasted when compared to a VSD machine.

Guy Laps, Technology and Innovation Manager at Atlas Copco, elaborates:

“Fixed speed may be suitable for applications where demand variation is minimal, but this is most often not the case with mobile compressors. Being able to match the speed of the mobile machine’s element with the required flow is vital. Atlas Copco was first to offer this ability in portable compressors, and to this day our VSD technology continues to offer unparalleled efficiency, unmatched reliability, and future-proof connectivity.”

Keeping operations running smoothly

Mobile compressors can also suffer from pressure drops or overshoots. If a pressure

drop happens mid-application – while drilling, for example – it can demobilise the tool being powered and halt operations. At the other end of the scale, overshoots can lead to the opening of the safety valve, resulting in a sudden and extremely loud, uncomfortable noise that can hinder both workers and bystanders.

A stable, fast acting regulating system that is designed to handle transients is therefore critical to avoiding pressure drops and overshoots.

Guy concludes:

technology, make it possible for the operator to define the pressure while the machine automatically regulates the flow. These innovative technologies will stop fluctuations in their tracks, resulting in a stable and highly efficient compressed air output.”

Volvo CE To Produce More Electric Wheel Loaders

As part of its ambition towards industry transformation through sustainable solutions, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has announced an investment into the production of electric wheel loaders from its plant in Arvika, Sweden.

The SEK 65 million (around $6.3 million) investment from Volvo Group will allow the Arvika factory in Sweden – which specializes in the production of medium and large wheel loaders – to expand its facilities with a new building and allow for the phased introduction of new electric wheel loaders.

It is not only a milestone in the plant’s almost 140-year history, but a significant moment for Volvo CE and its determination to be completely fossil free by 2040 – in line with the aims of the Paris Agreement and as laid out in the manufacturer’s industry leading Science-Based Target goals. It is also a pioneering step forward in its ambition for 35% of its machines sold to be electric by 2030.

Coming soon after an announcement to invest in electric haulers from the company’s production facility in Braås, Sweden, it is also a signpost that Volvo CE is committed to achieving more sustainable solutions for customers across all its product lines – and is dedicated to driving that change forward

in the here and now. These announcements are part of an investment strategy that allows Volvo CE to advance electric solutions across its production facilities, including also the Konz facility in Germany, Belley in France and Changwon in South Korea, where other electric machines are made.

It is not the first sustainability initiative from the Arvika facility. Despite actually increasing production last year, the factory managed to reduce its internal climate footprint by 350 tons of CO2 thanks to a variety of emission reduction efforts.

“Our goal at the factory in Arvika, as well as Volvo CE and the entire Volvo Group

is to be climate-smart and to produce fossil-free machines,” continues Mikael.

“Together, we are quite clear that we want to lead this transformation and be the driving force of more sustainable ways of working for the benefit of our planet. This investment is Arvika’s exciting first step towards electrification.”

Building work is set to begin later this year, with further announcements on when production will begin to come. SP

MB Crushers’ MB-G Grapple Essential For Demolition Work

Hand precision but tears and disassembles like a machine, said three of our customers—operators of earth-moving equipment who demolished buildings.

All had the same objective - to demolish and recover as much material as possible in total safety - and with the same type of equipment: an MB Crusher sorting grapple.

Hand Precision

Demolishing a 1940s farmhouse, which is unfit for use and unsafe, involves complexities. Michele Foglia of Effe Emme Edilizia is well aware of this. Instead of the classic demolition grapple, he chose an MB Crusher MBG900 grapple. He mounted it on a Kobelco to demolish the structure from start to finish. Rather than knocking it down, he dismantled it piece by piece and, with the MB Crusher grapple. He immediately recovered all the materials - floors, beams - to be disposed of. And still man-

aged to recover the limestone to be reused for constructing a new building. The MB-G grapple grasped the materials with extreme delicacy and agility, allowing work to be safe both on the building site and on the street side. “We had a great time: it was exact in dismantling the structure, and it worked nimbly. We are amazed that we managed to demolish an entire house with a grapple!”

“It is a very practical piece of equipment, simple and quick to use. It has very intuitive controls for opening and closing the claws and rotating the equipment itself. For example, in the disassembly, I could take several wooden beams at a time, making the work considerably faster.

Magnet Transport Group Relies On Kenworth W990s

Mark Miller has always had a passion for entrepreneurship. It’s what led him to start a new business venture, Magnet Transport Group in 2020, following 34 years of owning and operating an industrial cleaning, painting and epoxy flooring company.

“My dad was a truck driver, and I drove a truck for several years after high school before entering the industrial cleaning industry. When I grew my cleaning business (Performance Industrial) to the point it could operate without me, I started driving trucks parttime for my friend Greg Liebl, owner of High Road Transport. I’ve always had an interest in heavy equipment and enjoyed the opportunity to travel the country as a driver,” Miller said.

“At age 63, I wasn’t ready to retire, but I was ready for a challenge in starting a new business. So, in 2020 I sold Performance Industrial to my son Bill and daughter-in-law, Karen, and started Magnet Transport Group with my stepson Drew (Trombley),” Miller said.

According to Miller, warehousing, construction and

other commercial industries in Upstate New York requiring transportation services were growing rapidly, creating the perfect market conditions for Miller and Trombley to enter the trucking industry.

During the fall of 2020, the Kingsbury, New York-based company purchased its first truck – a Kenworth W990 equipped with a 76-inch midroof sleeper, 505-hp engine and 18-speed automated transmission from New England Kenworth – Burlington, Vermont. Magnet Transport Group specializes in hauling oversized loads on flatbed and step-deck trailers in all 48 states and also transports general freight in dry van trailers throughout the Northeast. Miller gained valuable experience hauling oversized freight while previously working for High Road Transport.

For Miller and Trombley,

the decision to start a company with Kenworth’s latest long hood was an easy one. “Drew and I have both driven W900s in the past and we really liked that model and the quality of trucks Kenworth produces,” said Miller. “We also have some friends that own trucking companies and operate Kenworths and they advocated for us to go in the direction of buying a Kenworth. When it came down to choosing the model, as a new company, we wanted to build a uniform fleet with new model trucks. And since we like the classic style of trucks, the W990 made sense. We expected it to be a step up from what we experienced driving the W900, and it sure is.”

Since purchasing its first W990, Magnet Transport Group added a W990 day cab in 2021 to better accommodate growing regional delivery demands. Trombley is the full-time driver of the W990 day cab and the company hired its “first” driver this past summer. Before, Miller and Trombley would split time operating the W990s.

“Now that we have a fulltime over-the-road driver and Drew handling regional driving, I have more time to focus

on growing the business,” said Miller. “We’re very active in prospecting new customers in our area to work with; developing working relationships with other trucking companies in Upstate New York; and in browsing load boards for freight to haul. Our goal is to add another W990 next year and add several more trucks in the following years to meet demands. As we grow the fleet and hire more drivers, Drew will phase out of his role as a primary driver and spend more time running the business.”

Prior to joining Magnet Transport Group, Trombley drove for a regional beverage carrier where he gained valuable driving experience. Over the course of his career, he’s driven a variety of trucks including Kenworth W900s. According to Trombley, the layout of the cab and driving experience of the W990 compared to the W900 is a significant step up.

“I have a lot more legroom driving the W990 compared to the W900 and the seats are more comfortable,” said Trombley. “The visibility over the front of the hood and through the side mirrors are noticeably better as

well, which makes it an easier and more enjoyable truck to drive.”

On the road, Trombley credits the W990s improved turning radius and fuel economy over the W900 as key performance differences between the two models. “By design, the W990 is more aerodynamic than the W9 and we definitely notice the W990’s improved fuel efficiency at the pump,” said Trombley. “The new model also seems to have a smoother, sharper turning radius, which is especially helpful in navigating tight jobsites and industrial facilities.”

Magnet Transport Group was an early Kenworth W990 adopter, and there weren’t many on the road when the company started operating its first one. “Now we see quite

a few of them,” said Miller. “We receive compliments all the time about the look of our trucks, which are a direct representation of our company. We keep them nice and clean to support our image as a quality and professional company.”

For this story, I’ve consulted with Ian McCallum who worked for Nories in the 50’s and 60’s, driving all these trucks. Ian had pamphlets, newspaper clippings and pictures about these trucks.

Norie Bros. obtained six war surplus Mack trucks. They had 671 Jimmy motors and came with a bare minimum cab. Just a seat and a bit of a roof. Nories had cabs and fenders added at Norm Copley’s shop at Mill Bay. Number 1 & 2 were gravel trucks. Numbers 3, 4 and 5 were log haulers and from what I can determine #6 never left Copley’s shop. One of the gravel trucks had the box removed and a tank added to make a fire truck.

Self-heating LED headlights round out the updates and add to the suite of safety features already on previous Mack Granite models. The integrated heating elements automatically sense the ambient temperature and turn on to keep ice and snow from building up in colder environments and an anti-fog coating prevents condensation in warmer, humid environments to improve visibility.

Safety is also improved during daylight driving through new, integrated amber daytime running lights that double as turn signals, making the truck more visible to oncoming traffic and on the jobsite.
