Peterbilt Introduces Innovative Digital Vision System-Mirrors

Peterbilt announced the introduction of its new Digital Vision System-Mirrors (DVS-M) in the Models 579 and 567 to maximize driver visibility and safety.

The DVS-M is an intuitive digital solution that uses one High Dynamic Range (HDR) camera integrated into the driver side mirror head and two HDR cameras integrated into the passenger side mirror head. All three cameras feature hydrophobic lenses to repel water, ice and dust which ensures visibility during harsh conditions.

Cameras controlled by the joystick interface are viewed on two large high-definition interior monitors. The driver side monitor is 12.3-inches, and the passenger side monitor is 15-inches; both are strategically placed on the APillars to avoid disruption in windshield visibility and to allow continued use of standard glass. The monitors can

be viewed in three layouts: Traditional, Panoramic or Expanded and also feature Vision Enhancements which include Automatic Trailer Tracking and Panning, Infrared Night Vision and Clear Inclement Weather Vision.

“Peterbilt sets new standards for performance and safety with purposeful innovation. Our Digital Vision System-Mirrors aligns with this commitment and reflects how we successfully leverage leading technology to enhance our products and elevate the overall driving experience for our customers,” said Jake Montero Peterbilt assistant general manager, sales and marketing.

The DVS-M helps to improve driver safety by reducing blind spots on the road, providing clear visibility during inclement weather and by reducing the distraction of headlight glare at night.

Other unique features of the DVS-M include a fuel savings of up to 1.5% due to a smaller side mirror design and an automatic camera defrost when temperatures reach below 43°F. SP

RCC To Address Empty Trailer And In-Transit Moves

The Honourable Anita Anand, president of the Treasury Board, is leading a revival of the Canada-United States Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) to help the Canadian private sector discuss regulatory barriers

to cross-border trade and investment and identify opportunities for alignment and cooperation.

The president of the Treasury Board held a meeting recently with multiple associations to discuss this process as the minister begins discussions with her U.S. counterpart, who will be the co-lead of the RCC, through the U.S. Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

“The RCC has a limited scope of trade matters it can address, but this process allows CTA to tackle issues like U.S. in-transit movements and empty trailer repositioning,” said CTA president Stephen Laskowski. “Both of these matters help improve the efficiency of businesses

on both sides of the border, bringing costs down in the supply chain and reducing the carbon footprint of the trucking industry.”

In-transit movements through the U.S. remain restricted, whereas they continue to be allowed through Canada. As such, CTA is asking the RCC process to

recommend that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) invest in the technology required to migrate A8B documentation requirements from paper to an electronic format and that the U.S. recognize this process. This change, as well as U.S.-Canada political support, should be sufficient to restore simplified in-transit

options for Canadian trucking fleets.

Regarding empty trailer movements, CTA is asking that each government recognize, through policy, that a truck driver can reposition an empty trailer in a foreign country, a notion which both the Canadian and U.S. trucking industry remain aligned on.

TRAILERS

Entrans And Drōv Technologies Extend Exclusive Partnership

Engineered Transportation International (EnTrans) and Drōv Technologies have extended their exclusive partnership on TANK Ai, an intelligent tank system available on Heil Trailer, Polar Tank and Jarco products.

This advanced technology will be offered exclusively on new builds for these brands as well as retrofits within the installed base.

TANK Ai gives fleet managers and drivers a full view of the trailers’ systems, using sensors and equipment that provide real-time monitoring. The captured

data is aggregated through Drōv’s AirBoxOne, the system’s central command.

Fleets can use the information to enhance the safety, productivity, and uptime of their trailers, while also lowering maintenance costs. Additionally, fleets can extend tire life by more than 50 percent with AirBoxOne’s proprietary automated tire inflation/deflation technology offered with TANK Ai. With the extended partnership between EnTrans and Drōv, TANK Ai features will become available on all Heil, Polar and Jarco product lines,

and as a retrofit option on existing tank trailers. This offering adds tremendous value to both new OEM customers and customers who have these innovative technologies installed as aftermarket equipment at our certified network of dealer service centers.

“We are excited to extend our partnership with Drōv and continue to offer these advanced tank trailer technologies exclusively on Heil, Polar and Jarco products,” said Jake Radish, SVP, CCO, Engineered Transportation International. “TANK Ai is a perfect example of our proven innovation, performance and safety-driven focus.”

“We are proud to extend our exclusive partnership with the leading tank trailer manufacturer in North America and continue to bring new technology advancements to the tank trailer industry,” said Lisa Mullen, CEO, Drōv Technologies. “The integration of Drōv’s AirBoxOne Smart Trailer solutions into TANK Ai provides differentiated safety and operational efficiencies for tank trailer fleets.” SP

Navistar Drives Toward Autonomous Technology

Navistar, Inc. is making progress in autonomous driving technology in preparation for the launch of an autonomous commercial pilot program with customers.

As a member of the TRATON Group, Navistar is involved in a new partnership with Plus to integrate its Level 4 autonomous SuperDrive technology stack into International vehicles and other branded vehicles within the TRATON Group.

Navistar recognizes that the high volume and scalability of hub-to-hub operations presents an immediate addressable market of 25 billion miles of long-distance freight on the U.S. interstate system. The company has strategically selected hub-to-hub operations as the company’s core segment for commercial viability of autonomous implementation. International trucks equipped with SuperDrive by Plus are being validated with a safety driver on routes in Texas. Customer

pilots are expected within the year, with commercial deployments expanding incrementally along strategic U.S. corridors.

“There is a strong business case for autonomous technology in the hub-to-hub distribution model, specifically in long-haul transportation where there’s a compelling opportunity to increase operational efficiencies,” said Tobias Glitterstam, chief Strategy and Transformation officer, Navistar. “Global partnership with a company like Plus allows us to leverage the technical strides they have made as we work together to focus on the commercial viability of Level 4 autonomous driving.”

Navistar’s autonomous commercial pilot program is focused on integrated au-

tonomous solutions. Fully developed and supported by Navistar, the autonomous technology solutions will be seamlessly integrated into customer operations, tailored to fit unique customer requirements.

“Our autonomous commercial pilot program is intended to be a safe, reliable option for customers to explore the deployment and integration of autonomous vehicles into their operations,” said Chet Ciesielski, vice president, On-Highway Business, Navistar. “As always, we are committed to being a trusted partner as we seek to develop solutions for autonomous driving technology that increase our customers’ operating efficiencies, improve road safety, and alleviate strains in the supply chain.”

The Plus Level 4 autonomous driving system SuperDrive is integrated into International trucks, providing solutions for maintenance, telematics, safety, and reliability.

“We are excited to partner with Navistar to build the next generation of transportation solutions enabled by our industry-leading autonomy technology,” added Shawn Kerrigan, COO and Cofounder of Plus. “By leverag ing our experience deploy ing our highly modular and flexible autonomous driving software across the U.S., we can help accelerate the commercialization of autonomous trucks that can easily be integrated into customer operations.” SP

FuelCell, Toyota Launch Tri-Gen System

FuelCell Energy’s Tri-gen technology produces three products: renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen, and usable water.

FuelCell Energy, Inc. and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. are celebrating the grand opening of the first-ofits-kind “Tri-gen” system at the Port of Long Beach, California.

Tri-gen uses biogas to produce renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen, and usable water, and was built to support the vehicle processing and distribution center for Toyota Logistics Services (TLS) at Long Beach, Toyota’s largest North American vehicle processing facility that receives approximately 200,000 new Toyota and Lexus vehicles annually.

“The goal of our collaboration with FuelCell Energy was to find sustainable solutions for the TLS vehicle processing facility here at the Port of Long Beach as part of our goal to remove carbon dioxide emissions from our operations,” said Group Vice President of Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs at Toyota, Tom Stricker. “This groundbreaking facility shows that there are ways to reduce our emissions and burden on natural resources with scalable technology based on hydrogen.”

Thanks to FuelCell Energy’s Tri-gen platform, TLS Long Beach is Toyota’s first

port vehicle processing facility powered by 100 percent on-site generated renewable electricity. FuelCell Energy’s innovative fuel cell technology uses an electrochemical process that converts directed renewable biogas into electricity, hydrogen, and usable water with a highly efficient, combustion-free process that emits virtually no air pollutants.

“Tri-gen demonstrates that hydrogen-based energy can benefit businesses, deliver zero-emission transportation for light- and heavy-duty vehicles, support improved air quality in local communities, reduce water usage, and deliver immediate and longterm benefits to the environment,” FuelCell Energy CEO and President Jason Few said. “As a company, we are living our purpose when we enable visionary customers like Toyota to decarbonize their operations and harness the energy solutions offered by hydrogen—all while leaving communities with cleaner air and easing the strain on power grids and water supplies.”

Tri-gen produces 2.3-megawatts of renewable electricity, part of which will be utilized by TLS Long Beach to support its operations at the port. Excess electricity is

delivered to the local utility, Southern California Edison, under the California Bioenergy Market Adjustment Tariff (BioMAT) program, adding a renewable, resilient, and affordable baseload electric generation resource to the electric grid.

Tri-gen can also produce up to 1,200 kg/day of hydrogen for the fueling needs of Toyota’s incoming lightduty fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) Mirai while also supplying hydrogen to the adjacent heavy-duty hydrogen refueling station to support TLS logistics and drayage operations at the port. As of January 1, 2024, California’s Advanced Clean Fleet Regulation will only allow zero-emission trucks to newly register as drayage trucks. By 2035, all drayage trucks will be required to be zero-emission. The Tri-gen platform supports FCEV Class 8 trucks today and is there to support on-going migration to zero emission trucks between now and 2035. Hydrogen production can be ramped up and down based on demand. Since completing construction last year, in January of this year Toyota used the renewable hydrogen produced at Tri-gen to fill the first Toyota Mirai vehicles at TLS, and in April the first heavy-duty FCEV Kenworth T680 Class 8 truck was filled at the adjacent Shell HD filling station using Tri-gen-produced renewable hydrogen.

erations at the Port of Long Beach, Tri-gen is expected to help reduce more than 9,000 tons of CO₂ emissions from the power grid each year. This supports both Toyota Logistics Services’ carbon reduction goals as well as the

Port of Long Beach’s goals as a leader in innovative solutions to reducing carbon emissions.

“The dawn of the renewable hydrogen era is upon us, thanks to our collaboration with Toyota and Fuel-

Cell Energy and their innovative Tri-gen system,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “The green power generated by the Tri-gen system, and similar projects, is part of our multilayered strategy to fuel our goal to become the world’s first zero-emissions Port.”

Tri-gen will also help avoid more than six tons of grid NOx emissions, which are harmful to both people and the environment today. Using hydrogen-powered fuel cell Class 8 trucks in port operations has the potential to reduce diesel consump -

tion by more than 420,000 gallons per year.

“FuelCell Energy and Toyota’s collaborative effort signifies technological innovation and also positions Long Beach at the forefront of global leadership in renewable energy solutions,’’ said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. “This transformative initiative solidifies our city’s status as a trailblazer in green initiatives and shows our dedication to a cleaner, more sustainable future for our community and beyond.” SP

Urgent Need For Commercial Truck Driver Training

Report shows that drivers with less training and experience are more likely to be involved in collisions.

New commercial truck drivers who have not received adequate training are putting the safety of Canada’s roads and highways in jeopardy, according to a report released in early April.

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) commissioned MNP, one of Canada’s leading professional services firms, to identify the key factors impacting the cost of insurance for commercial

posure to excessive jury verdicts in the United States – court verdicts where juries award plaintiffs exceptionally high amounts.

• The enforcement of commercial truck regulations violations is inadequate.

truck operators. MNP found drivers with less training and experience are more likely to be involved in collisions and make costly claims than drivers with more training and experience. Insurance claims related to commercial trucking accidents have been increasing rapidly in recent years.

“Canada’s trucking sector is critical to the success of our economy, transporting over 90% of all food, consumer goods and materials to consumers across the country,” said Celyeste Power, President and CEO, IBC. “The property and casualty insurance industry is working closely with the trucking sector to find solutions to some of the challenges it currently faces, including driver shortages and access to adequate training and risk management. This third-party report echoes many of the recommendations that our industry has put forward and we encourage governments across the country to use this report as a call to action to update and improve training and enforcement standards.”

To identify best practices in truck driver training, MNP conducted a review of driver training programs in various Canadian and international jurisdictions. It then offered recommendations on how to improve training requirements. Key findings in the report include the following:

• Truck drivers with less than three years of experience have a greater likelihood of being involved in a collision.

• Collisions involving heavy loads or dangerous goods tend to be more severe and have potential for greater damage. As a result, the level of required liability coverage increases when these goods are transported, affecting premiums.

• Premiums for vehicles travelling outside of Canada are impacted by ex-

• Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) has yet to be implemented across Canada.

• Training quality varies by school; there needs to be oversight, and standards need to be enforced.

Specifically, MNP concludes that the MELT program does not fully prepare drivers to operate a heavy truck in all conditions and additional one-on-one onboarding and mentorship is needed.

“The Canadian Trucking

Alliance, or CTA, appreciates the opportunity to participate in IBC’s work in the commercial trucking space,” said Geoff Wood, Senior Vice-President, Policy, CTA. “We look forward to working together on the items identified in this report and other projects currently underway as we develop a comprehensive road map to address key policy issues in Canada impacting trucking operations, safety, training, licensing and industry oversight.”

Other recommendations in the report include piloting the use of telematics to provide feedback to commercial truck drivers, and adopting a graduated or progressive licensing system.

IBC has been pleased to work in cooperation with the

trucking sector and training organizations across Canada to understand ongoing insurance challenges and to help develop recommendations to support the trucking industry.

“The Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) is very impressed with the detail and research invested in this report and feels that it substantially represents what we have experienced in training over the past several years,” said Philip Fletcher, President, TTSAO. “Certain improvements can be made for the benefit of new drivers in the industry, and we concur with the study on the shortfalls indicated.” SP

Evergreen Waste Chooses Mack LR Electric Refuse Trucks

Evergreen Waste Services recently took delivery of the first of five ordered Mack LR Electric models, making its batteryelectric vehicle (BEV) the first fully electric Class 8 refuse vehicle in operation in the State of Delaware.

Evergreen Waste Services also plans to use bi-directional charging when available to charge the LR Electric battery during off-peak hours and push power back to the power grid during peak hours.

“It’s exciting for Mack to be part of Evergreen Waste’s peak shaving effort to help reduce the amount of purchased energy from its local utility company during peak demand hours,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America.

“This is just one example of the benefits of BEVs, and we are happy to be able to supply five Mack LR Electric refuse vehicles to Evergreen Waste to help support them in their journey to adopt electric technology.”

Evergreen Waste, based out of Hockessin, Delaware, put the LR Electric in service on May 4 and will begin everyday service on May 13. The LR Electric, equipped with a rear loader McNeilus 25-yard body, will operate in a residential area of New Castle County, Delaware. The LR Electric is planned to make 600 pick-ups and travel about 40 miles each day.

Marcus Stevens, CEO of Evergreen Waste Services, said Evergreen was awarded grant money through the Delaware Mitigation Plan. Stevens said the company planned to add electric vehicles to its fleet whether or

not they received funding, but the grant allowed them to purchase four more LR Electric vehicles to add to its fleet of 50 vehicles. All Class 8 refuse vehicles in the Evergreen Waste fleet are Mack trucks.

Evergreen Waste has two charging station at its site, with three additional charging units to be installed later. Evergreen ordered five charging stations to accommodate the five LR Electric vehicles so all can be charged at the same time.

“We are one of the first to do vehicle-to-grid,” Stevens said. “We will bring the LR Electric back to our site with about 40 percent less battery life than when it left. We will then send power back to the grid during peak hours, and then we will charge the vehicle during the off-peak hours of 11 pm to 4 am. The vehicle will be fully charged and ready to go by 5 am.”

Stevens worked with the team from Mack to help with infrastructure needs. Stevens said he is proud to be a company on the forefront of electric vehicle adoption.

“The LR Electric purchase will be a homerun if the vehicle can handle 600 stops and go back to the yard because it significantly allows us to save money on diesel and maintenance needs,” Stevens said. “It will be a grand slam if we dis-

charge energy back to the grid and receive a credit back. That makes this really attractive.”

Stevens said the Mack Ultra Service Agreement was instrumental in his purchase decision. Standard on all Mack LR Electric models, the Ultra Service Agreement includes scheduled maintenance, preventative maintenance, towing and repair, a battery monitoring service and Mack’s connected uptime services in one package. It can be included with monthly truck payments for customers in the U.S. and Canada through Mack Financial Services (MFS).

The next generation Mack LR Electric offers a standard 376 kWh total battery capacity for 42 percent more energy and increased range between vehicle charges. Twin electric motors produce 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.ft. of peak torque output from zero RPM.

Four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150 kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system, power the vehicle and all onboard accessories through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The two-stage regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day with an increasing load.

The truck proudly displays a copper-colored Bulldog to make it easily identifiable as a Mack and denotes the electric drivetrain.

The Mack LR Electric is produced at the Mack Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all Class 8 Mack vehicles for North America and export are assembled. SP

New Learning Pathway For Alberta Class 1 Drivers

Alberta’s government is improving Class 1 licensing and training with a new, made-in-Alberta learning pathway for professional truck drivers.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) became a new pre-licensing requirement for Class 1 commercial drivers in Alberta on March 1, 2019. Since then, insurance claims have risen for Class 1 drivers and MELT has been identified by the trucking industry as one of the leading factors contributing to the ongoing commercial driver shortage, increasing time and costs for the driver recruitment process.

Industry input found broad support for the continuation of Class 1 pre-license training, but also included recommendations to improve safety. These recommendations included tiered or restricted Class 1 driver’s licences, more appropriate training for certain industries, increased in-cab training hours to avoid the need for retraining, and an expanded scope of training to include additional competencies for

Class 1 driver licensing.

“This is a proactive approach to ensure truck drivers in Alberta have the right training with the right vehicle to perform their jobs professionally and safely,” stated Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. “This new learning pathway provides more appropriate training for drivers and ensures Alberta’s truck drivers are the besttrained in the country.”

In response, the improvements to Class 1 licensing and training are focused on ensuring road safety while developing driver competency throughout a driver’s career. The new made-in-Alberta learning pathway was developed through extensive consultation with a wide range of perspectives in the commercial driving industry and is designed to increase driver skills, improve safety, and create ongoing training for cur-

rent and prospective Class 1 drivers.

“Working with industry leaders was a key component of our plan to attract and train drivers and develop a new Class 1 learning pathway,” said Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education. “Class 1 drivers will now bring better skills and enhanced operational and safety training to the many rewarding opportunities of a career in trucking. I look forward to working with the industry on its recent proposal towards becoming a designated trade.”

This apprenticeship-style model offers a learning pathway for Albertans to develop the skills to succeed and advance in their career as a professional driver, developing skills as a trainee and building on their skills and experience, with the goal of obtaining a Red Seal designation and the recognition as a professional trade. This also allows driv-

ers to get on the job training in the actual vehicle they will be using each day throughout their career.

“Getting the right people with the right training behind the wheel is critical to the province’s commercial transportation industry and economy,” explained Doug Paisley, chair, Alberta Motor Transport Association. “This new made-in-Alberta learning pathway will help train more drivers while securing safety on the province’s highways.”

“The PMTC is pleased to participate in the Alberta

Transportation and Economic Corridor Commercial Driver Shortage Committee,” said Marcel Pouliot, western Canada representative, Private Motor Truck Council of Canada. “This committee, which is working on a Learning Pathway for Class 1 Drivers, will serve as the foundation towards a professional designation for drivers.”

“Our economy depends on the safe, efficient delivery of goods, and Insurance Bureau of Canada applauds the government for leading the way to support Alberta’s commercial trucking sec-

tor,” stated Tim Morrison, director, Insurance Brokers of Canada. “The enhanced focus on training and oversight for Class 1 operators brings the potential to improve road safety, help reduce collisions on our roadways and create new opportunities for drivers to enter this important profession.”

“Women Building Futures also sees the huge demand in commercial transportation,” said Carol Moen, president and CEO, Women Building Futures. “Alberta needs more safe, qualified commercial

drivers to keep our economy moving, and we are proud to help women shift gears into these roles.”

The new learning pathway also responds to the unique needs of Alberta farmers by exempting them and their immediate family from the requirement for pre-licence training and providing them a farmrestricted Class 1 driver’s licence. This new farmrestricted Class 1 driver’s licence will allow farmers and their immediate family members to operate Class 1 vehicles within Alberta only, and for authorized farm purposes only. Farmers who are eligible for the new farm restricted Class 1 driver’s licence must still complete a knowledge test, road test and vision screening, and submit a driver medical assessment to demonstrate they can safely drive Class 1 vehicles.

“The farmer Class 1 licence exemption is a positive first step to alleviate the trucking shortages impacting farms and ranches,” explained Brodie Haugan, chair, Alberta Beef Producers. “Alberta Beef Producers is looking forward

to working with the government and stakeholders on future steps in transportation to ensure a healthy agricultural supply chain for Albertans.”

“The announced changes are a significant step forward,” said Roger Chevraux, chair, Alberta Canola. “This exemption aids farmers in overcoming time and financial hurdles and prevents the migration of agricultural drivers to commercial trucking. It recognizes farmers’ vital role and acknowledges their unique contributions to Alberta’s economy.”

Transportation and Economic Corridors will optimize monitoring and oversight of commercial truck drivers, carriers, driving schools, driver instructors and driver examiners to enhance safety on Alberta’s roads. Neighbouring jurisdictions will also be notified of the changes, and drivers without proper Class 1 driver’s licences will be subject to the rules and regulations of those jurisdictions.

Quick facts

• Budget 2024 invests $41 million over three years ($5 million in 2024-25 and $18 million in each

of 2025-26 and 2026-27) in new funding to set up a commercial driver training grant that will support the implementation of a made-in-Alberta learning pathway.

• This new funding supplements the Driving Back to Work program announced in Budget 2022 to reduce barriers to commercial driver training. The remaining funding in this program is $20 million over the next two years ($10 million annually in 2024-25 and 202526).

• There are more than 149,000 licensed Class 1 drivers in Alberta. However, only 31 per cent are employed as truck drivers.

• According to Statistics Canada, there are 4,260 commercial truck driver vacancies in Alberta (Quarter 3, 2023) which accounts for 20 per cent of the vacancies in Canada.

• The program will begin in March 2025.

• The farmer exemption was implemented on April 1. SP

Manitoba To Upgrade Roads In Norway House

Province also Launching Study to Replace Sea Falls Ferry with a Permanent Bridge.

Norway House Cree Nation and the Northern Affairs community of Norway House will soon see upgrades to provincially owned roads, thanks to a $21.5-million multi-year investment from the Manitoba government, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor and Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie announced March 28, 2024.

“We’re upgrading and restoring the roads connecting communities to each other and the local airport,” said Naylor. “This will make it easier and safer for people to get around the Norway House

region. As we prioritize vital infrastructure across the province, we’re collaborating with First Nations in the spirit of reconciliation, community well-being and economic growth.”

The proposed $21.5-million Norway House project focuses on repaving approximately 30 kilometers of provincial roads that traverse through and connect both Norway House Cree Nation and the Norway House community. The project also includes the restoration of Provincial Road 373.

“Everyone deserves safe and accessible infrastructure,

no matter where they live in Manitoba,” said Bushie. “I thank the people of Treaty 5, Norway House Cree Nation and the Northern Affairs community for working with us on this initiative. Today’s announcement is an example of what we can accomplish together.”

“I am pleased to see these projects move ahead. These are essential infrastructure initiatives that will improve the safety of community members. It is a sign that the government takes northern needs seriously,” said Chief Larson Anderson, Norway House Cree Nation.

Additionally, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is advancing a joint cost-shared feasibility study with the Government of Canada to replace the nearby Sea Falls Ferry with a permanent bridge.

These upgrades support Manitoba’s multi-year infrastructure investment strategy, Naylor noted, which outlines planned strategic investments in roads, highways, bridges, airports and flood protection over the next five years in Manitoba. SP

Engineering At Menzies Bay

At Menzies, I found working on the rigging was kind of boring.

Once I figured out there were other special jobs, I was on the lookout for them. I was usually one of the first guys at the marshalling yard in the mornings. First thing to do was check the bulletin boards for information. Safety news, union news, company news, and job postings were here. I saw that there was a posting up for a temporary crewman in the engineering department. I asked Vic Bortolotto, woods foreman, what it was all about. His answer was that’s the department he started in when he first started for M&B. “Put your name in, you might like it,” Vic said. “You will help with the layout of roads and settings.” So I put my name in.

A few days later Vic said, “You got the posting. I’ll take you down to the office when we finish marshalling the crew.”

The office had several de-

partments, managers, foreman, secretaries, accountants, and engineering. Vic introduced me to Arnold Ennick, the head engineer. Other men there were Dale Dannel, Rollie Hack, Bo Ferguson, Allie Gibson, and Bob Cooper. I was to become Rollie’s partner, working in the Memekay area; the rest of the crew were mostly in Iron River. The first thing we did was have a safety meeting. We did a “Job Safety Breakdown” reviewing procedures about the job.

The union guy (being me) had to drive the crummy and we had what we called a cattle car

I went with Rollie Hack to layout a setting in the Cooper Creek area. We spent the first couple of days just walking around, identifying key positions in the area. For instance, a large cedar tree on the bank of a small creek which empties

into a larger creek. Then back to the office were we would look at arial photographs with 3D glasses.

Then, we would go back out into the field and establish some blazed trails running north/south and east/west. Once this was done, we would layout the roads and settings.

Sometimes, we would have a weiner roast. One time we put out the fire and went on with our work. A few days later we came back to the same spot and somebody had put engineering tape around a good size area which we could see was burnt. Looks like we never put out the fire good enough!

At the end of the day, we made sure we were back in the crummy to listen to the Dennis Rennie Show. He was the shop foreman and he was on the radio lining up work for the afternoon shift mechanics. It was pretty funny and entertaining.

Once Rollie and I finished this project, I got to be Dale Dannel’s helper. He was building a bridge in Iron River and I was to drive the Hiab truck, hauling loads of planks and timbers to the bridge site. He was frustrating to work with, trying to lift too much

weight at one time. If he had left me alone, I could have done it in half the time!

It was three days of hauling stuff down to Iron River. In the end, I think I hauled more stuff back to the yard than he used!

Dale didn’t like doing layout. He was assigned to do a windfall setting. It took us a whole week to do what could have been done in about a day. Boring. This job ended with the winter shut down.

At the marshalling shack one morning, one of the foreman says, “Hang back this morning Ken, we got something else for you today.”

After the crew was dispatched, down to the dump we go. Ross, the dump man, was going on holidays, and I was going to run the dump machine for a week.

This was a “key” job. You got to greet all the drivers when they brought the load slips up to the cab to be put into the computer. Using weigh scale, some of the loads were identified as check scale loads and had to be marked with fluorescent ribbon.

What a great week I had, sitting up in the cab watching the boom men, truckers, and ocean traffic going by Men-

zies Bay and dumping an occasional load. SP

Freightliner Produces Milestone 1 Millionth Cascadia

Freightliner, a brand of Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), celebrated a significant milestone with the production of the 1 millionth Freightliner Cascadia – the first Class 8 truck in North America to reach the seven-figure mark.

“For more than 80 years, Freightliner has been dedicated to serving its customers with purposeful and innovative transportation solutions to help businesses succeed. When the Freightliner Cascadia launched in 2007, it was designed to do exactly that, and we are incredibly grateful to our customers who have placed their trust in the Cascadia and Freightliner to help us reach the 1 million mark,” said David Carson, SVP of sales and marketing at DTNA. “With our flagship Cascadia, our commitment to making a safer, cleaner, and more cost-efficient solution for our customers has never wavered. And we are not done yet.”

What started as an idea to develop a truck with new aerodynamic, lightweight, and uptime-improving features has since evolved

through four generations of the platform. It has earned its status as the market-leading Class 8 commercial truck through continuous innovations designed for driver comfort, increased safety, and reduced fuel consumption. Notably, since its original introduction, the Cascadia has improved its fuel efficiency by more than 35 percent.

The Cascadia continues to be a trailblazer for innovative features in the industry, and the foundation for transformative projects at DTNA. As an example, the Cascadia is serving as the vehicle base for the SuperTruck initiative, the multi-year co-funded project by the Department of Energy (DOE) that investigates next-generation technologies for heavy-duty commercial trucks and potential product integration into series production trucks. The battery

electric Freightliner eCascadia, which launched in 2022, has today driven over 6 million real-world miles with customers across more than 50 fleets in the U.S. Looking even further into the future, DTNA also designed an autonomous-ready Cascadia with redundant safety features, which include braking and steering for a truck tailormade for autonomous driving functionalities and prepared for the integration of any virtual driver. Currently, the autonomous-ready Cascadia is being tested as a self-driving truck in real-world operations by Torc Robotics, an independent subsidiary of DTNA since 2019, setting standards for safety on the road.

Key product developments throughout the history of the Freightliner Cascadia:

• First Generation Cascadia debuted with the

Detroit DD15 (2007): Introduced the all-new Cascadia with the heavyduty Detroit Diesel DD15 engine platform, which offered excellent performance, improved fuel consumption, and industry-leading power.

• Second Generation Cascadia ‘Evolution’ launched (2012): Unveiled the second-generation Cascadia series engineered to increase fuel efficiency. The launch included the introduction of the Detroit DT12, an Automated Manual

Transmission (AMT) that combined the operational ease of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual transmission.

• Detroit Connect introduced (2013): The introduction of Detroit Connect brought the first OEM-provided, factoryinstalled connectivity suite to the Cascadia.

• Detroit Assurance launched (2015): Detroit Assurance offered as the first OEM-designed proprietary suite of safety systems, fully integrating the Detroit powertrain with

safe driving innovations for a higher level of safety and performance in the Cascadia.

• Freightliner Inspiration Truck debuted (2015): Utilized the Freightliner Cascadia as a framework for the first licensed automated commercial truck.

• SuperTruck I unveiled (2015): Freightliner, DTNA, and its project partners exceed program goals and demonstrate more than 115 percent improvement in overall freight efficiency over a

Trucking Job Vacancies Could Surge By 2030

Current industry recruitment activities out-perform the Canadian workforce with more women and youth joining the sector.

Trucking HR Canada has released its 2024-2030 Labour Market Outlook report, Driving Progress – The New Road Ahead.

Canada’s trucking and logistics sector drives the nation’s business and consumer economy — its performance is vital to the movement of all goods in Canada’s national supply chain. This comprehensive report has revealed that while the driver shortage remains an issue, employers are increasingly concerned about non-driving occupations. And, for the first time in a decade, increasing input costs replaces driver shortage as the top concern for employers.

“Workforce investments and HR best practices are working. They have driven industry recruitment performance to new heights with significantly more women, youth and immigrants join-

ing our sector,” says Angela Splinter, CEO, Trucking HR Canada. “However, workforce demand continues to outpace supply, with a strong capacity being our nation’s first line of defense against supply chain disruptions.”

Key Findings: The Challenges Ahead

• Vacancies will exceed 40,400 by 2030 if ongoing support to attract and retain more workers is not provided.

• The top concern (33%) expressed by employers is higher costs — including fuel, equipment, insurance and labour, with labour shortages for truck drivers ranking second (17%).

• Overall, there were 26,235 more women in trucking and logistics, up 27% (from 97,135 to 123,370) in 2021 over 2016. During this same period, the pro-

portion of women in the overall Canadian workforce remained stagnant at 48%.

• Youth (under the age of 25) employed in trucking and logistics increased to 10% in 2021 — the sector employed 34,185 more youth than in 2016. In just five years, the number of youth drivers almost doubled — accounting for 18,690 people behind the wheel and 25% of trucking and logistics workers. Over the same period, the number of people under 25 in the Canadian workforce decreased by 8%.

• One in four companies will likely have to delay plans to expand its business because it cannot hire enough drivers. THRC’s quarterly reports provide data that is not available anywhere else, and shares in-depth analysis by experts who understand the trucking and logistics sector. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program (SWSP). SP

“We look forward to welcoming this new state-of-theart facility to the YLW campus and the City of Kelowna. This is a testament to the City’s commitment to finding sustainable and innovative solutions that address climate change through embracing

new green technologies.” says Mayor Tom Dyas, “This is more than just a building. Women In Trucking Association Announces 2024 Drivers of the Year

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) announced on Friday three drivers as the winners of the fifth annual Driver of the Year award sponsored by Walmart.

The announcement was made during the Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event, hosted by WIT at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, KY. The event honors female commercial drivers for their efforts and successes in the trucking industry.

Carmen Anderson, America’s Service Line

Carmen Anderson, a company driver at America’s Service Line, LLC, has 2.5 million safe-driving miles. In 2015, she won the South Dakota Truck Driving championship and went on to compete in nationals in St Louis. Two years later, she was selected for the Wisconsin Road Team. In August 2019, she was named the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association (WMCA)

“All of these deserving drivers are members of the WIT Image Team,” said Jennifer Hedrick, WIT president and CEO. “They represent the WIT mission and participate in ride-along events for legislators, regulators, and industry leaders to provide a deeper understanding of the obstacles they face on the road. They also speak to the media and other industry professionals at public events and industry trade shows.”

Driver of the Month. She also won the WMCA 2019 Driver of the Year, the first woman to be named the sole recipient of the award. Anderson is a lifetime member of WIT and a lifetime member of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA). She also serves on the organizing committee for the South Dakota Special Olympics. She was named one of the WIT Top Women to Watch in Transportation in 2021. She is trained to recognize and prevent human trafficking through her involvement with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) and has appeared on TV news to speak on the topic.

Deb LaBree, Castle Transport LLC, leased to Landstar

Deb LaBree became a professional truck driver in 2006. She is an independent owner-operator of Castle Transport LLC and has been leased to Landstar since June of 2014. She is well known for mentoring other business capacity owners (BCOs) within Landstar and has received the Bronze and Silver Star of Quality awards from Landstar for customer service and mentorship.

LaBree has been a team driver with her husband, Del, for all her career. She has received the safety award every year since she began driving and was named the NASTC Driver of the Year in 2020. LaBree has been instrumental in growing and managing the WIT Facebook group which has more than 11,000 active members. She was also the July 2020 WIT Member of the Month and is a past WIT board member.

LaBree has shared her experience as a guest on SiriusXM’s Dave Nemo Show and Women In Trucking Show. Other media appearances include NBC, Today with Megyn Kelley, Wall Street Journal and various industry publication interviews. She also volunteers to participate as a research subject for various college projects.

Throughout her career, Edwards has exemplified a passion for safety and professionalism and is an encouraging advocate for women entering the transportation industry.

Among her many accomplishments, she has been named Driver of the Year for her region and has received multiple safe driving awards at J.B. Hunt.

Air curtains are designed to create an invisible climate barrier during door openings, which helps to maintain temperature control and prevent the infiltration of dust, insects and outside air from reaching sensitive cargo, such as food or pharmaceuticals. Brightec distributes its BlueSeal products to over 33 countries worldwide to provide some of the largest names in temperature-controlled distribution with proven solutions for industry-leading cargo climate control.

As part of the collaboration, Thermo King will not only leverage its well-established North American presence and industry expertise to distribute these units to a new market, but also expand its product portfolio to offer

new energy-efficient air curtain technology for effectively managing cargo temperature.

“We are delighted to partner with Thermo King, who has shown tremendous support not only in distributing BlueSeal throughout the U.S. and Canada but promoting the product to their vast network of dealerships,” said Hans Opdam, founder of Brightec and inventor of BlueSeal air curtains. “Thermo King has a strong reputation for their commitment to sustainable solutions and we are excited to be part of their offering.”

Through independent tests by Brunel University London and its Centre for Sustainable Energy Use in Food Chains (CSEF), BlueSeal air curtains demonstrated a substantial savings of 30% of energy in a small box truck and 45% of energy to recover cargo temperature in an 18 tonne refrigerated truck model.

Catherine Walsh, aftermarket product manager at Thermo King, said, “The addition of BlueSeal air curtains to our product lineup seamlessly integrates with our existing transport refrigeration technology, offering Thermo King customers yet another energy-efficient cold chain solution to support their sustainability goals. Junnie Jones

Pardon me while I stray from my military experiences for this article, as I jump ahead a couple of years, to tell you about a truly different individual named Junnie Jones

I returned to college after my stint in the Seabees. Periodically, my funds would run low, and I would drive tractor-trailers for a trucking company, WMTS, based in Eastern North Carolina. I drove for three months, saved most of what I earned, then returned to college. During one of these times, I met Junnie. I have never been able to decide if Junnie danced to the beat of his own music, if he was one-of-a-kind, if the mold was thrown-away after he was born, or if any dozens of other clichés adequately describe him. Very deep down, I know that, sure as hell, I will never meet another person like him.

For close to a week, it so happened that Junnie and I received duplicate dispatches. Each of our loads were picked up from the same shippers, and delivered to the same consignees. We both questioned the accuracy of each

dispatch, but sure enough, there were two loads waiting for us every time. We had several short runs of 300 to 400 miles, and a couple longer trips of 600 to 700 miles. Usually, when you spend this much time with another person, you get a pretty good idea of what makes a person tick. Well, I never did, and I never will.

Because we ran together, we also stopped at the same truck stops for fuel and food.

After eating several meals, I noticed Junnie letting me be the first to order. It did not matter what I ordered. Junnie told the waitresses he would have the same items I ordered, including which beverages I drank. Curiosity eventually got the better of me, so I asked him why he didn’t make his own decisions regarding food and drink. He said he didn’t like or dislike any foods, and that the only

reason he ate anything was because he had to eat to stay alive. He felt it was a helluva lot easier to let someone order for him than to suffer the aggravating chore of having to make his own food selections. Junnie told me, when he traveled alone, that he would sit at the counter at most truck stops and drink coffee until another driver arrived to sit beside him. Yep, you guessed it. Junnie would have the waitress bring him the very same foods the other driver had ordered. He also said there were many times he just laughedit-off when one of the drivers, whose order Junnie had copied, referred to that “strange fellow,” or “fruitcake” sitting next to him.

Subsequent conversations with Junnie provided further information, or confirmation, to indicate his eating habits were only one of the ‘different’ ways he lived his life. Once, he was rudely awakened during the night to find his wife straddling him (not sexually), as she pointed a loaded handgun at his face. He asked her what the hell she was doing, and she replied that she would blow his God damned head off if he ever messed with another woman. Junnie

questioned why she decided to do this thing in the middle of the night. She informed him that since she could not sleep, she just needed to tell

him how she felt. Junnie finished this story and I just sat there shaking my head several times. For once, I was not able to utter a single word!

At another meal, (where I ordered), Junnie related the story of what took place several years before I met him.

Junnie and I drove tractors similar to this International CO4070.

He said, while he was living in a house in a swampy section of Eastern NC, he noticed a snake crawl under his house. He didn’t think anything more about it until, over the next few days, he counted several more snakes. When he finally opened the door to the crawl space, he saw a den of snakes. Junnie went into his house, loaded his shotgun, reopened the crawl space door, and then “killed every one of those sons-of-bitches.”

Junnie did, in fact, kill every snake. He soon realized that he had also killed most of the plumbing and electrical wiring running throughout the crawl space. He said he replaced the pipes and wiring by himself, and that although it was pretty expensive, at least he didn’t have to crawl around with live snakes down there. Kinda made sense to me. (Kinda)

I was relieved our week together was coming to an end, because this last story left me shaking my head so often that I had a terrible headache. It sounded so bizarre that I just knew he had made up this s#*t. But then, damn if friends didn’t tell me they had read about it in

their local newspaper.

As Junnie was cleaning a shotgun, while sitting at his kitchen table, his wife called down to him from the top of the stairs to ask if he was watching the television, which was playing in the den. He answered that he had been watching, but he was not watching it at that moment. She then asked him to turn it off. Half an hour later, she yelled from the top of the stairs, “I said to turn-off the God damn television!”

Junnie calmly loaded his shotgun, pointed it through the doorway and politely turned off the television by blowing it all to hell. His wife ran down the steps yelling, “Why did you do that you crazy bastard?”

“Well, you told me to turn-off the God damned television,” he replied.

“What if I had told you to turn-off the oven or the dishwasher?” she asked.

I will shorten this domestic disturbance story by telling you that the police were summoned, and they hauled Junnie off to the pokey. At his court appearance, he told the judge he didn’t know why everyone was so upset, since everything he had blown-to-hell

was his, so what did it matter? The judge replied, “No, Mr. Jones. Everything you did not shoot was yours. Everything you did shoot belonged to Mrs. Jones, and you are going to replace all Mrs. Jones appliances you shot.” Junnie told me he bought a new television, dishwasher, range, refrigerator, and washer and dryer.

I know he drove several more years for WMTS, but until recently, I wondered whatever happened to him, figuring his shotgun still played a big part of his life. He must have straightened himself out because he has driven for the same company for many years, and he is soon to retire. I am glad to know he took care of his demons. (He probably blew the s#*t out of them.) SP

Altor Locks Now Offers

ICON

Trailer Lock

Patented ICON stands up to modern power tools that easily cut, drill, and break conventional locks.

Altor Locks, the Virginia manufacturer with the strongest coupler lock available on the market, and Meyer Distributing, Inc., a leader in automotive specialty products marketing and distribution, have partnered to make the ICON Trailer Lock available to their Retail and Wholesale customers. Meyer chose to offer the Altor ICON Trailer Lock because it keeps trailers safe.

“Meyer is pleased to be supplying one of the strongest coupler locks in the industry. After getting a hands-on look at the ICON coupler lock we were immediately convinced this was a product we needed to partner with. The quality and security is evident once you get your hands on it.” said Ben Johnson, Category Sales Manager RV Towing & Ma-

rine for Meyer Distributing.

Altor’s US Patent 11,766,905 B2 was issued in 2023 for a premium lock specifically engineered to stand up to thieves using angle grinders, reciprocating saws, drills, lock picks, pry bars and hammers. Conventional locks on the market can be compromised in 120 seconds or less. The innovative ICON survived a concentrated attack with an angle grinder, lasting more than 1 hour and 32 minutes, using 14 blades, and eight battery packs.

The ICON Trailer Lock is made with over twenty pounds of high-quality cast steel hardened to 450 Brinell making it able to withstand a lot of force. Common conventional locks use cheaper low carbon steel which is

The first and only trailer locked engineered to stand up to power tools.

more malleable and vulnerable to saw blades and drill bits.

In addition to the patented radial fin design, the ICON features a premium disc detainer lock core, extreme weather resistant seals and one-piece design for easy lock and go experience.

“Meyer’s strong work ethic, focus on customer service, technology and wide array of products have made them a trusted partner for automotive aftermarket wholesalers and retailers for 40 years,” said Larry Thomas, Chief Revenue Officer at Altor Locks. “We look forward to working with this industry leader.” SP

Meyer Distributing is a leader in specialty products marketing and distribution. Through numerous strategically positioned warehousing facilities, Meyer serves thousands of customers nationwide via Meyer Logistics direct ship. All Meyer associates have but one goal: To improve their ability to offer the fastest, most flexible and most reliable service in the industry. Their hardworking sales staff, mix of over 700 product lines and high fill rate provide retailers with what they need to be profitable on a dependable, repeatable basis.
