New Cat 548 Makes Logging Satisfyingly Productive

The new Cat 548 next generation forest machine features several significant design upgrades that make it a top choice for tree work.

“The 548 earned a reputation for reliable performance,” said Brent Uitermarkt, vice president for Caterpillar’s forestry products. “The next generation 548 will take it to an even higher level.”

More production

Available in Log Loader and General Forest configurations, the new 548’s C7.1 twin turbo engine produces 30% more power than the previous series’ engine, enabling the new electrohydraulic control system to deliver 30% more swing torque. Updates to the drive system increase travel speed by 10%, helping the machine cover ground faster than ever.

Smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to working conditions to help maximize fuel

efficiency without sacrificing performance. Cold-start capability of -25˚ F (-32˚ C) and high ambient temperature capability of 126˚ F (52˚ C) enable the machine to work year-round.

Improved comfort and safety

The new Certified Forestry cab with its reinforced structure and large 1.25-in (32-mm) thick polycarbonate windshield enhances operator safety. Available in a choice of rear or side entry, the cab’s interior space is 25% larger, allowing most operators to stand without hitting their head. Field of view from the standard heated and cooled seat is 50% better due to narrower cab pillars, larger panoramic windows, and a flat engine hood. A standard rearview camera enhances visibility as do three available cab risers – 22 in (558 mm), 48 in (1219 mm), and 72 in (1829 mm). The available Cat easy lock cab tilting system on

the Log Loader configuration makes for much easier transport.

Ingress and egress are easier due to the cab’s wider and taller door and tilt-up console on the operator’s seat for the side-entry cab. The machine’s new dual HVAC system keeps operators comfortable regardless of working in the summer heat or during subfreezing ambient winter temperatures. Its specially insulated roof and improved window and door seals keep in-cab noise levels low.

Operators can start the 548’s engine with a simple push of a button or available Bluetooth key fob and unique Operator ID. Operator ID allows each operator to quickly program and store their own machine settings and attachment function preferences. A larger 10-in (254-mm) high-resolution touchscreen monitor delivers intuitive navigation through operating menus and includes a digital version of the operator’s manual for quick reference.

An available Cat® PL161 attachment locator assists in finding work tools within a range of 200 ft (60 m), even when covered by overgrowth or debris.

FORESTECH EQUIPMENT

Lower maintenance costs

Compared to the previous model, the 548 next generation forest machine will consume 50 fewer filters over the course of 12,000 hours, which contributes to lowering maintenance costs by up to 15%.

“We improved our filters and our service intervals, and we improved ground-level access to service points to make daily maintenance quick and safe,” said Uitermarkt. “Our new electrohydraulic control system eliminates the need for a pilot filter and pilot oil altogether.”

Fuel filters feature a synchronized 1,000-hour change interval – double the service life of the previous model. A

new hydraulic oil return filter improves filtration and delivers a 3,000-hour service life, which is 50% longer than previous designs. The high-efficiency cooling fan runs only when necessary, and reversing intervals are programmable to enable the fan to keep the radiator cores clean without interrupting work.

Modern technology

Product Link™ technology captures critical operating data, fault codes, and machine location information to boost fleet management efficiency. When within cell coverage, the machine’s new remote troubleshoot feature analyzes the data captured by Product Link and can share

it with the Cat dealer to help save a service trip to the jobsite. Owners can also be sure the 548 is operating with the most current version of software with standard remote flash, which updates machine software around the production schedule.

“More production, greater comfort and safety, and lower maintenance cost is what loggers can expect from our new 548,” said Uitermarkt. “Add in dealer network that’s dedicated to the forestry business and you get a winning combination of machine and support that really can’t be beat.” SP

National Mini Forest Program Kicks Off In Richmond, BC

Green Communities Canada (GCC) is excited to have launched the National Mini Forest Pilot program on Earth Day this year.

The kick-off planting event, coordinated by the City of Richmond as part of its Earth Day celebration, in collaboration with Garden City Conservation Society, took place at Terra Nova Rural Park, Richmond, on April 22.

The National Mini Forest Pilot program is led by GCC in collaboration with Dougan & Associates, Canadian Geographic, and Wilder Climate Solutions through the Network of Nature. The program addresses the urgent need for green spaces in urban environments by transforming sites into diverse fast-growing forests.

“We are very pleased to be the first city in western Canada to be part of this program and plant a mini forest on municipal property,” said City of Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “As part of the City’s Earth Week event, this tree planting at Terra Nova Rural Park demonstrates what the community,

non-profit organizations, and all levels of government can achieve by working together to make our planet a more resilient place for future generations to come.”

The pilot program — funded through the Government of Canada’s Two Billion Trees program, TD Bank Group and the Greenbelt Foundation — will enable GCC and partners to plant at least 2,800 trees in 2023, across five cities including Richmond, Toronto, Markham, Hamilton and Guelph. Each planting event will be coordinated by a local partner organization which builds the critical grassroots support to ensure the forests thrive.

B.C. Introduces New Measures On Old Growth, Innovation, Forest Stewardship

The B.C. government is launching new measures to protect more old growth by fast-tracking innovation and co-developing new local plans with First Nations to better care for B.C.’s forests.

“Our forests are foundational to B.C. In collaboration with First Nations and industry, we are accelerating our actions to protect our oldest and rarest forests,” said Premier David Eby. “At the same time, we will support innovation in the forestry sector so our forests can deliver good, family-supporting jobs for generations to come.”

At the centre of the eightpoint plan is $25 million for new Forest Landscape Planning (FLP) tables that will drive improved old-growth management while incorporating local knowledge and community priorities. Enabled by 2021 amendments to the Forest and Range Practices Act, forest landscape plans are a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to forest stewardship that will replace existing,

industry-developed plans.

In response to requests from First Nations for more in-depth discussions about old growth, this funding will support eight new regional FLP tables with the partici-

pation of approximately 50 First Nations. These tables will prevent harvesting in old-growth forests important for ecosystem health, biodiversity, clean water, carbon storage and Indig-

enous values. They will also provide greater certainty about the areas where sustainable harvesting can occur to support jobs and investment.

The announcement also includes ramping up government investments to support innovation in the forestry industry. The Province is doubling the new BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund to $180 million and expanding eligibility provincewide. The BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund will, for example, support mills to process smaller-diameter trees and manufacture higher-value wood products, such as mass timber. It will accelerate shovel-ready projects across the manufacturing ecosystem that will bring direct benefits and stable, family-supporting jobs to

communities throughout the province. Previously, the fund was restricted to projects outside of the Metro Vancouver and the Capital regional districts.

“As we work to protect more old growth, we know we need to accelerate our efforts to build a stronger, more innovative forestry industry that better shares the benefits with workers and communities. Forestry is a foundation of B.C.’s economy,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests. “That’s why we are doubling provincial investments to help mills retrofit to get off old-growth logs and manufacture more high-value wood products right here in B.C., so we create more jobs from every tree.”

Additional actions to accelerate implementation of the Old Growth Strategic Review during the next year include:

• implementing alternatives to clear-cutting practices, such as selective harvesting techniques, that better support forest resiliency, ecosystem health and climate adaptation, through a new $10-million silviculture innovation program;

• repealing outdated word-

ing in the Forest and Range Practices Act regulations that prioritizes timber supply over all other forest objectives, like water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity;

• increasing Indigenous participation in co-developing changes to forest policy through $2.4 million provided to the First Nations Forestry Council;

• protecting more oldgrowth forests and biodiverse areas by leveraging hundreds of millions of dollars of philanthropic donations to fund conservation measures supported by the Province and First Nations, through a new conservation financing mechanism to be set up within six months;

• enabling local communities and First Nations to finance old-growth protection by selling verified carbon offsets that represent long-term emission reductions through the new Forest Carbon Offset Protocol 2.0, which will be finalized this year; and

• completing the Old Growth Strategic Action Plan by the end of 2023, to be developed in collabo-

ration with First Nations and in consultation with stakeholders.

Since November 2021, the Province has been engaging with First Nations about deferring harvest within old-growth forests. Deferrals have now been implemented on approximately 2.1 million hectares of old growth. As recommended by the Old Growth Strategic Review, deferrals are intended to prevent biodiversity loss while the Province, First Nations and other partners develop a new, long-term approach to forest management that prioritizes ecosystem health and community resiliency.

The Technical Advisory Panel recommended that the Province implement deferrals within 2.6 million hectares of forests identified as most at risk of biodiversity loss. An additional 1.4 million hectares was already permanently protected.

Since November 2021, 11,600 hectares have been harvested while engagements with First Nations were underway. This is equal to less than 0.5% of the area recommended for deferral. SP

Terex Ecotec’s New TBG 530T Shreds The Competition

R. Heatrick Ltd, a recycling and demolition contractor based in Northern Ireland, is turning waste wood products into biomass using a Terex Ecotec TBG 530T track-mounted high-speed shredder.

The TBG 530T has increased efficiency and saved running costs for the company, processing a mixture of waste wood and pallets at a rate that required two machines previously.

Mark Heatrick explains, “The TBG 530T track-mounted high-speed shredder is a great machine, cutting back on a lot of manpower. Before, we were running the waste wood through a slow speed pre-shredder then through a high-speed shredder, so apart from the obvious savings with maintenance and repair of

two machines, there is also a huge saving on diesel.”

LP Building Solutions, a leading manufacturer of high-performance building products, and Forex Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement under which LP will acquire the assets owned by Wawa OSB Inc., a subsidiary of Forex Inc. The transaction will add to LP’s assets a manufacturing facility in Wawa, Ontario that will be converted into an LP SmartSide Trim & Siding mill. The transaction, which is subject to court approval and customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in early May 2023.

LP continues to expand capacity across North America to position LP SmartSide Trim & Siding for long-term growth.

“LP SmartSide Trim & Siding has experienced tremendous growth over the

past few years, becoming one of the fastest-growing siding brands in the United States,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager of Siding Jason Ringblom. “In response to customer demand, we continue to expand our capacity across North America to position SmartSide for longterm growth. Our acquisition of Forex Inc.’s Wawa facility is a great addition to our fleet of siding mills and perfect example of how we are investing in the future of SmartSide.”

Once converted, the mill will add approximately 400 million square feet of capacity, making it LP’s largest single-line siding mill. This will bring LP’s total siding

capacity to 2.7 billion square feet annually.

Built in the mid-1990s as an OSB mill, the site is an ideal location for SmartSide production due to its access to an ample and sustainable aspen wood basket and efficient logistics options. The mill’s conversion will bring more than 150 sustainable jobs to the region, which has a long, rich history in forest product manufacturing.

“We are thrilled to see the continued revival of this wood-based plant coming true,” said Forex Executive Vice President Yolaine Rousseau. “We would like to thank all the employees, First Nations, suppliers and local authorities for their support of this project.”

LP is evaluating project schedules to determine when construction at the facility will begin. While a second SmartSide manufacturing line is still planned for LP’s Houlton, Maine facility, this project will break ground after the conversion of the Wawa mill. SP

What Does Sustainable Forestry Even Mean?

Sustainable forestry. It’s an expression we hear a lot these days, but what does it mean?

A good working definition comes to us from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. It explains that it’s “the stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality, and their potential to fulfill now and in the future, relevant ecological,

economic and social functions at local, national and global levels.”

It’s a mouthful, but that’s because sustainable forestry isn’t just about trees. It’s about an entire ecosystem, and yes, human beings are an important part of that ecosystem, whether they live in urban high rises or forestrydependent communities.

Although to many hearing the term for the first time it sounds like a new concept, progressive approaches to forestry have been around, and evolving, in one form or

another for almost a century. Although it’s true that in the early part of the 20th century reforestation was minimal because it was deemed uneconomical, early tree plantations started sprouting in the 1930s, and by 1941, as many as 10 million seedlings had gone into the ground. But those were just a few drops in the old seed bag compared with today. According to the provincial forest ministry, BC planted more than a billion trees from 2018 to 2021, including a whopping 304 million in 2020.

As important as tree planting is to the sustainability equation, as the IPCC definition makes clear, it isn’t all there is. It’s about maintaining and protecting waterways, ecosystems, wildlife, cultural values, biodiversity, human

diversity, recreational opportunities, communities, providing economic benefits, and as we have come to understand more recently, a way to address climate change and exercise more control over wildfires. And how to do all this is something of a moving target, says Lennard Joe, CEO of the BC First Nations Forestry Council. Stuff happens in the natural world, and it often catches us by surprise. There was a time when climate change, beetle kills and seemingly unstoppable forest fires weren’t on anyone’s radar. Now, responding to these challenges represents an essential component of sustainability in policy making.

“We must define it within current realities,” says Joe.

Sustainable forestry—indeed resource extraction in multiple sectors in BC—is also important to advancing reconciliation with First Nations. “For thousands of years, we have been looking after the forests,” says Joe. “They provide a wide range of benefits, including food and shelter, but there’s also an economic side because forests are in our backyards. Working in them provides

Indigenous Benefit More from Forestry Jobs

Data from the 2021 Census proves that forestry jobs put more money in the pockets of Indigenous Canadians and their families. Its Labour Force Survey indicates that the average salary for Indigenous people in forestry was $56,100 as compared with $51,120 for other forms of employment. Leading the way within the sector were jobs in pulp, paper, and paperboard mills, where the average paycheques added up to $89,100 annually. Other subsectors include:

• Sawmills and wood preservation – $60,200

• Logging - $56,650

• Forestry and logging - $56,100

• Truck transportation - $49,600

Despite this, the census also reveals that in Canada, Indigenous wages trail those of non-Indigenous by an average 14.2 per cent, says Heather Exner-Pirot, a senior fellow and director of natural resources, energy and environment for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa, a public policy think tank. On the upside, the data also shows that the gap has been shrinking steadily, especially in forestry. From 2019 to 2021, wages in forestry and logging increased by 9.4 per cent for all workers, while Indigenous wages in the same sector enjoyed a bump of 18.7 per cent.

Overall, Indigenous people are well represented in the resource sectors of the Canadian economy. While they only represent 3.9 per cent of the Canadian workforce overall, they comprise 6.9 per cent of the oil and gas workforce, 10.8 per cent of the mining workforce, and 9.2 per cent of forestry. Expect these numbers to increase as Native people take further control over the management of natural resources on their traditional lands. SP

the certainty and security of well-paying jobs.” Although it doesn’t get a lot of ink amid the cacophonous noise that attends anti-logging protests and confrontations on forest roads, government and in-

dustry have been working at an accelerated pace over the past two decades developing new techniques and best practices for promoting sustainability. We’re now seeing the results. In 2021, Interfor released its Sustainability Re-

port outlining progress and goals for improving forest outcomes. It sets targets for hiring diversity, “meaningful” reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, and expanding third-party Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) fibre

sourcing certification to cover 100 per cent of log sourcing.

In another example, Mosaic now has a manager of partnerships, Dana Collins. It will be her job to promote within the organization a culture of diversity, equity

and inclusion, and to seek out Indigenous partners to collaborate with in managing sustainable timberlands. In a recent interview she explained that she’s always had an interest in increasing the representation of women and Indigenous cultures in the forestry sector, “I was often the only woman at the table, so I recognized the challenges facing minorities.”

Pursuing sustainability goals is not just virtue signaling, says SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow. “Nowadays both customers and investors want to know that the

products they are buying are produced using best practices.” The proof of this is in the numbers. According to an SFI survey from 2022, 84 per cent of SFI-certified organizations reported steady or increased demand for certified products over the last 12 months.

Charges that certification is just corporate “greenwashing” don’t stick. SFI is an independent non-profit committed to best practices. Its 18-member, three chamber board includes representatives of conservation organizations, academic in-

stitutions, aboriginal/tribal entities, family forest owners, public officials, labour, and the forest products industry. “This diversity reflects the variety of interests in the forestry community,” says Abusow.

Linda Coady, incoming president and CEO of the Council of Forest Industries identifies as a “sustainability practitioner,” something she became thanks to her engagement with conflict resolution on the Coast over forestland usage issues. In her role she worked with industry, environmental groups, local communities, forest workers, Indigenous communities and leaders, government officials, and international buyers. Her

goal now that she has joined COFI is to move the conversation along at all levels because continuously raising the industry’s sustainability performance is not just a ‘nice-to-do’ thing, it’s a ‘mustdo’ thing.

“The forest companies in BC that constitute our membership understand that to be globally competitive, we must recognize that our environmental, social, governance and economic performance reflect the evolving priorities of our communities of stakeholders, including employees, communities, Indigenous people, supply chain partners, customers, shareholders, investors and governments.”

As a way to promote education on the subject to its members and policy makers,

COFI released a Statement of Sustainability Commitments outlining a broad number of responsibilities that are now a condition of membership, and she promises that member performance will be monitored and reported on regularly. Forestry is increasingly recognized as an important tool when it comes to addressing climate change, but unfortunately, this is a view that has not been widely understood. Now is the time to change that, says Coady.

“We need to acknowledge and promote the role of sustainable forest management and forest products—from lumber and food packaging to biofuels—as tools that can fight climate change and plastic pollution. It’s critical that Canadians, and customers around the world, know the facts about our globally leading regulatory regime, third-party certification, and products sourced through best practices.

strengthen our forest management regime to keep forests healthy, promote biodiversity, and deal with the impacts of climate change, forest fires, pests and more.”

SFI’s Abusow agrees that perception is a problem in these embattled times, especially with the public, or to put it plainly, voters. “We’ve learned that proving your bona fides to customers and investors was the easy part,” says Abusow. “The harder part is public perception, which comes down to sound-bite management issues directed at a public that tends to have a short attention span.”

The answer is a “forest literate society” built from the ground up through education, something SFI has been doing for the past 20 years with a variety of initiatives in the United States. These include Project Learning Tree, which supplies educational learning tools to schools that examine forests, ecosystems, wildlife, water and watersheds, forest pests, forest policy, fire, forest economics, and human health. SFI is currently developing materials with Canadian

content for students of all ages in Canada, ranging from early childhood to high school graduation, and plans to liaise with educators both within schools and government to have the materials included in the curriculum, where it is going to have to be inserted in order to have any meaningful impact.

“The goal is to ensure every child knows about and has a better understanding of forests and realizes that there are many “green” jobs within forestry,” she says, adding that young people today are fully committed to environmentalism and need to understand that green jobs in forestry allow them to be part of the change they want.

Lennard Joe says he is optimistic about where the conversation is going, in part because Native people, the original stewards of the forests in BC, now have a seat at the table, and they bring to it a unique perspective, one that is both cultural and economic.

“The harsh reality is that economics play a role in any discussion,” he says. “We need to survive. Everybody needs to, so sustainability is

about managing the forests in such a way that we can ensure economic survival as well as preserve cultural values. Now that we all understand how important it is, we can stop finger pointing and start having the kind of hard conversations we need to have if we are going to achieve it, and First Nations will never not be part of those conversations.”

It is almost a certainty that over time, as circumstances change, and new technologies are developed—and perhaps unforeseen environmental challenges emerge—that the definition of sustainable forestry will change. Like the trees themselves, it will grow and mature. But the fact that it is being embraced by government, industry, and an increasingly forest-literate society ensures that forestry has a promising future for those that work in it, and for those that benefit from its contribution to health and well-being, and that is pretty much everyone else. Washington 78SL Perfect For 2nd Or 3rd Growth

The original Washington 78SL was the last of the 78 series, with the 78-40 in the 1960s, 78-A in the 1970s, the 78-T in the mid 1970s, and the 78SL in the mid 1980s. Yarders built by Washington were purpose-built for second growth forests and corridor logging. Only a few 78SLs were ever built, as Washington went out of business shortly thereafter.

The 78SL was designed by Washington’s Chief Engineer Fred Langford, who was much admired by Wheeler Equipment’s founder, Stuart Wheeler Sr.

The 78SL was actually the prototype in many ways for the Washington 88, with improvements in the interlock which made both machines faster, creating the extremely fuel-efficient machines of today.

The modernization of the 78SL for today’s regen growth conditions and corridor logging, has been a decade’s-long dream of Stu Wheeler, Sr. — who saw the need for an economically priced yarder that lowered operating costs, was fuel efficient, and was easy to maintain and operate. The ease of training makes the 78SL a winner for most small contractors on the coast or the interior.

The 78SL is a versatile, one-piece move — weighing in 90,000 lbs fully dressed, including fuel lines and rigging.

Running Skyline, or Slacking Skyline Mobile Yarder

Washington Logging Equipment Model 78-40s and 78As have been the industry standard for mobile swing careers operating running skyline systems. Good logging practice dictates most efficient logging is accomplished at distances less than 1,000 feet. Actual practice requires longer distances to handle the layout in some cases — and WLE has developed the Model 78SL to operate as a running skyline, or as a slackline system for the longer distance. The skyline drum (or rear main for running skyline applications) can be converted easily in the field by adding or removing lagging as needed for the type of

yarding to be done.

The 78SL maintains the swing capability permitting the logs to be decked on small landings. The swing capability eases the movement of the log through narrow roads when selective logging. The yarder can be swung to lead when changing roads, thus minimizing set up time. Two of the guylines are “walking type” so the yarder can be moved down the road, relocating only one guyline while leaving the other in place.

Versatility on the lot

Ideal for today’s multigenerational growth, thinning, and corridor operations, the 78SL can be configured in the following ways:

• Running Skyline — using MSP carriage or grapple

• Standing or Slacking Skyline — using motorized carriage or grapple, shotgun carriage, or drift carriage

• Highlead — using butt rigging in various configurations such as waistband, scablocking, North or Southbend

• Skyline drum or rear main drum (running Skyline)

The 78SL can also be converted easily in the field by adding or removing lagging as needed for the yarding conditions to be done.

Wide Drum Design

The 78SL maintains the wide drum design which keeps speed and pulls as close to equal at the head tree and tail tree as possible. Fewer wraps also means less pressure and damage on the bottom layers of line.

Why yard?

When yarding is done correctly, it can be more costeffective and efficient than ground-based logging. Yarding causes less ground disturbance, particularly around environmentally-sensitive areas such near rivers, creeks, or in a riparian management zone.

As with ground-based equipment, yarders can be used in roadside or landing operations, and many of the factors that apply to groundbased systems also apply to

cable systems. The ability to separate the yarding and loading phases results in increased efficiency, and the safety aspects are improved because of decreased congestion around the landing.

Roadside operations for cable systems are often limited to swing yarders because of their ability to pile the logs away from the immediate landing area.

Unlike ground-based systems, swing yarders can be used for roadside operations even on steep ground. Processing is usually done manually, and the side slope must only be low enough to allow the logs to be decked without sliding back into the cut block.

For yarding to landings, towers may be paired with an auxiliary machine, (e.g., a loader, skidder, or stroke delimber) to remove the logs after unhooking. In very steep locations, the loader may be required to hold the logs as they are unhooked, or the landing must provide a flat surface large enough to land the logs.

Bandit Continues To Expand To Meet Demand

Bandit Industries, Inc. celebrated the acquisition of a facility in Mount Pleasant with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 5th.

Bandit would like to thank each person that made an appearance and contributed to making the day special.

2023 marks Bandit’s 40th anniversary and much of its success is contributed to quality products, an amazing dealer network, loyal customer base, and their dedicated hard-working employees. The current product line consists of hand-fed and whole tree chippers, stump grinders, wood waste grinders, and Arjes slow speed shredders.

This facility formerly owned by Burch Tank is situated on twenty-four acres with 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

“These buildings and this property will be so instrumental in growing our company as we continue to ramp up to meet the growing demand for our products” stated Bandit’s CEO Jerry Morey during his onsite speech at the ceremony. The goal of this location is to draw employees from a further distance away to accommodate the current need for new employees. The proximity to the highway also serves as an additional convenience for accessibility.

Current state of this location includes Bandit’s electrical team, consisting of wiring harnesses for all Bandit products. Components for the whole tree chip-

per and horizontal grinder product lines also are produced at this new location.

Future plans include moving the rebuild department from the main headquarters. The rebuild department specializes in the refurbishment and service of existing Bandit machines. “The primary facility of this site is ideal for producing one of our major product lines, we will be adding a new paint room before we move a line here” Morey added.

A variety of attendees ranging from Bandit employees, community members, elected officials, and more showed up for the ceremony and spoke at the event. A listing of speakers is mentioned below, in addition to a video of the ceremony. 95.3 CFX was also live on location and promoted current job opportunities.

Bandit became an employee-owned company (ESOP) in 2018. During his speech, Jerry briefly talked about how Bandit became an ESOP, “we initially looked at selling to another manufacturing company and then an investment banking company, but backed out of those offers over concerns for our employees and the future of the company.” Morey added. Over the next couple of years, Bandit will likely need an additional 200 employees and hope to fill 95 open positions by the end of 2023.

In addition to the new Mount Pleasant facility, Bandit invested an additional fourteen million dollars throughout 2022 conducting several expansions at their main campus, including adding a new 80,000 square foot steel room featuring new cutting and machining equipment and robots. Once added together, the total manufacturing space across all Bandit locations equals 560,000 square feet. SP

Forests Ontario Plans Senior Leadership Changes

Forests Ontario is preparing for a transition of its top leadership, which will see longtime CEO Rob Keen step down from his role and be succeeded by new CEO Jessica (Jess) Kaknevicius.

Rob Keen has served as CEO for Forests Ontario since its inception in 2014, and served as the CEO of its predecessor, Trees Ontario, since 2011.

Jess Kaknevicius is currently the Vice-President of Education for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and previously served as Director of Forest Education and Awareness at Forests Ontario.

After 21 successful and rewarding years with Forests Ontario, CEO Rob Keen, Registered Professional Forester (RPF), is stepping down on May 5, 2023. Keen will be succeeded by Jess Kaknevicius, who is currently VicePresident of Education for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This decision was part of a long-term succession plan that aligns with both organizational and personal milestones.

Keen’s departure follows many impressive achievements for Forests Ontario, including the recent signing of a five-year partnership agreement with One Tree Planted, and announce-

Emerald Ash Borer To Be Regulated In Gaspésie In 2023

Preventing the spread of invasive species is important to protect forests, native plants and the forestry sector in Canada. Following the confirmed finding of emerald ash borer (EAB) -- an invasive beetle -- in the Regional County Municipality (RCM) of Avignon, in the Gaspésie area of Quebec, in July 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will continue to regulate the area with notices of prohibition of movement.

This means that ash material (such as logs, branches and woodchips) and all species of firewood cannot be moved off site without permission from the CFIA. The property owners with con-

firmed detections of EAB in the RCM of Avignon have been notified.

The CFIA will continue to survey and monitor the extent of the spread of this invasive beetle in 2023 in eastern Quebec and northern New Brunswick. The CFIA plans to consult with federal, provincial, municipal and First Nations partners and other organizations in the near future on options to manage emerald ash borer in eastern Canada.

Dougan Days

It had snowed enough in Phillips Arm for Nories’ that we were all laid off. My brother had just recently hired on at Dougan Logging in Jackson Bay. I gave them a phone call, asked if they needed any rigging men, yes come on in.

I got there just in time for supper. After supper in the bunkhouse getting to know the guys. It’s getting late and the light plant is shut down. It’s pretty dark in the bunkhouse, so we were using a can of boot grease for a candle, it started to get out of hand, someone opened the door, I grabbed it and threw it out just as Ken Uzzell (Kermitt) was walking in. Got him right in the tummy, burnt him pretty good, probably still has the scar!

The first day I was there I set chokers with Robert Uzzell. He was hooking on the older yarder that Kermit was running. They had two 90 ft. Madill yarders with Cat engines. Jack Norris was on the loader; my brother Rodney was in the landing.

After a couple of days doing this, I got moved into the landing. It was a very steep setting, with lots of full-length cedar (3 logs in some). The junior faller, Lyall, was elected to landing buck. I believe we both had 090 Stihl power saws; used a lot of gas. Running a scab block, the yarder could pull three or four of these logs at a time, which kept Jack, Lyall and me pretty busy. We got lots of loads of nice wood out. Jack was one of the best operators on the coast, but Lyall didn’t like it since he had to work eight hours (not fallers hours).

That’s where I meet Swartz; he was driving The Bounty Hunter. At the time, it was the hottest logging truck on the coast — an H.D. Hayes with V-12 Jimmy motor.

“So, you’re Smitts’ kid are you?” asked Swartz. Smitt was my Dad’s nickname.

“Kenny,” he said, “see that stick hanging on the guy line?” Out came his pistol, and the stick wasn’t hanging on the guy line anymore!

The last time I saw The Bounty Hunter, I was at Fra-

ser Bay at the head of Loughborough Inlet grading some road for BenWest. The truck was parked at the bottom of a hill being used as a fire truck. Recently, someone said the saw it over near Gold River, but that could have been another truck named Bounty Hunter.

They worked a “nine and five” shift. It was getting close to Christmas, so they were going to work a few days extra and then shut it down for Christmas. One day after work most guys ended up in Ronnigan from Shawnigan’s bunkhouse. Nobody went for supper that night and we drank all the booze we could find. It snowed just a fraction, just enough that we convinced the truckers that they couldn’t haul. We all went to town until after Christmas.

Into the seat I went. He showed me how the levers worked and Arnold blew three whistles to go ahead on her. I pulled the mainline friction into gear and slowly started bring in the logs.

“Open her up,” said George. “Now, slow it down a bit and let the haul back go.”

Wham! A fair sized log drove the bottom of the pad. George had to re-spool the haul back for me. I ran it the whole day, George was chasing and helped me with the strawline.

A few years later, I was working with Sammy Telosky at Elk Bay. The operator (Gary Young) was sick, so I told Sam I could probably get the rigging back and forth. After that, he put Gary on a third logging truck and I ran the yarders for the rest of the year. When it came time to tower up or down, Sammy just switched operators.

Later working for M&B I put in lots of shifts on the yarders they had. Never did tower one up or down in my whole career.

The loader was called Old Black it was a gigantic machine designed by Madill as a grapple yarder/loader. It could really lift!

After Christmas, Ronnigan from Shawnigan didn’t come back, so I was put on the newer spar. George Uzzell hooking, Barry Bertrand operator, me in the landing, Arnold Berg rigging slinger and Billy Rogers choker man. We were working on the flats by Duck Lake, a really brushy setting with lots of big cedar.

We later learned that this was a place where the Haida made their dugout canoes. Mel Parker (faller) described a cedar he fell that had a sixty foot section cut out of a standing tree. On the road to Glendale Cove there was a canoe laying on the side of the road that had pretty big second growth trees growing in it.

At the start of one shift, Barry had some business in town and wasn’t in camp. I thought George was going to run yarder, and after a couple of turns he called me up into the cab.

“Sit here,” George said.

One day, Dave Dougan backed in with the fuel truck — an old Ford pickup with six 45 gallon drums in the back and a homelite pump. I hopped up in the back, stuck the hose in one of the barrels and pulled the cord. It started pumping and then it lugged down. After a couple of minutes Dave started waving his arms.

“Whoa hold it,” Dave yelled. “You know what I just did, as a matter of fact I did just do it.”

“Do what?” I said. “We pumped about a half a barrel of motor oil into the diesel tank.”

We drained all the stuff in the fuel tank out onto the ground, put the real diesel into the fuel tank and carried on.

It was pretty nice wood in this area mostly cedar. One shift we got 111 loads! I received a bottle of whiskey with a sticker with my name on it.

Two-year Tree Planting Plan Announced In BC

Minister Wilkinson and Minister Ralston Announce Twoyear Plan to Plant Over 37 Million Trees in British Columbia Under the Two Billion Trees Program and Kick Off 2023 TreePlanting Season

Forests and trees capture and store carbon, making them an effective natural climate solution. Forests also clean the air that we breathe, improve water quality, enhance biodiversity and help cool our urban centres. Planting two billion trees in the next decade is a crucial part of Canada’s climate plan, and the Government of Canada is continuing to work with provinces, territories, local communities and Indigenous Peoples.

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, joined by the Honourable Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests of British Columbia, visited the Wild Bird Trust of British Columbia in North Vancouver to launch the 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program’s 2023 tree-planting season and announce that Canada and B.C.

have signed a Contribution Agreement under the 2BT program. Under this twoyear agreement, over 37 million trees will be planted in the province through nearly $80 million in joint funding from Canada and British Columbia.

“Trees are essential to our lives — they capture carbon, improve air quality and support wildlife — and they are important allies in our fight against climate change,” stated The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources. “That’s why Canada has committed to planting two billion trees. Through this investment to plant over 37 million trees in B.C., we are kicking off the 2023 planting season for the 2 Billion Trees program and showing how collaborative work between the federal government and our provin-

cial partners can ensure that the right tree is planted at the right place at the right time.”

The reforestation project will be primarily focused on wildfire-impacted areas. Ecological benefits include converting severely burnt areas into future healthy forests, restoring wildlife habitat and reducing the hydrological impacts of disturbed areas.

The estimated carbon benefit of this project is 2.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is the greenhouse gas equivalent of taking 467,314

gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for one year. The project is also expected to create and maintain around 810 direct and indirect jobs. Outside of the federal 2BT program, British Columbia has planted 1.6 billion trees since 2017. That record reflects provincial ministryfunded reforestation and the provincially-mandated silviculture obligations of forest companies as a condition of harvest.

This funding complements joint funding under

the 2BT program to help prepare British Columbia for this year’s planting season. This funding, for projects that took place in 2021 and 2022, supported survey work in the Cariboo and Thompson Rivers, the Okanagan and other interior regions of British Columbia impacted by wildfires. This preparation provided economic benefits to treeseed orchards and tree nurseries, with trees to be planted from a wide range of seed sources in support of B.C.’s climate adaptation strategy

and Canada’s climate plan.

The project with British Columbia is one of six recently signed multi-year Contribution Agreements between the federal government and provinces and territories under the 2BT program. Work to finalize additional agreements with provinces and territories to plant more trees across Canada is well underway.

“The millions of trees to be planted under this joint federal reforestation program will strengthen the province’s existing reforestation efforts, support employment, increase the carbon-capture capacity of our forests and reduce emissions in the province over the long term.”

Planting two billion trees over a decade is a crucial part of Canada’s climate plan — this is a marathon, not a sprint. Planting num-

bers may fluctuate as the program ramps up. Last year’s summer update reported that approximately 29 million trees were planted, amounting to about 97 percent of the 2021 season’s planting projection. Minister Wilkinson will provide a further update with planting numbers from the 2022 planting season later this summer.

By working together with provinces, territories, local communities and Indigenous Peoples, Canada continues to combat climate change with all of the solutions at our disposal, including by planting

two billion trees over the next decade.

In February 2023, the Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia signed an Agreement in Principle (AiP) under the Provinces and Territories stream of the 2BT program. Under this agreement, Canada and British Columbia are leveraging their shared commitment to delivering social, economic and environmental benefits for communities through tree planting.

The Contribution Agreement between Canada and B.C. is the first of several agreements

under Canada and British Columbia’s overarching AiP that the federal government intends to sign with the province in the next decade. It will retroactively fund B.C. Forests to plant more than 37 million trees through the 2022 and 2023 planting season.

Nearly $80 million in joint funding from Canada and British Columbia ($39.9 million each) will support this agreement.

The six 2BT Contribution Agreements that Minister Wilkinson referenced, including the agreement with B.C., stem from the seven overarching Agreements in Principle that the federal government has signed with provinces and territories in the last year. These Agreements In Principle outline the general parameters of federal, provincial and territorial collaboration on planting two billion trees by defining biodiversity enhancement, habitat restoration, carbon sequestration, permanency of forest cover and several monitoring activities post-planting as the objectives of each tree-planting project. Forestry Funding Helps With Fiona Damage, Silviculture

More support is coming to help private woodlot owners recover from hurricane Fiona and grow healthy forests.

“Private woodlot owners still need support to clean up trees downed by the hurricane so we’re investing more money to help,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables. “We’re also making sure owners have certainty about silviculture funding in plenty of time to make plans and start work to manage their woodlots sustainably.”

The Department is investing an additional $5.7 million this fiscal year to help private woodlot owners with Fiona cleanup and to manage their lands sustainably:

• $2.5 million extends eligibility for Fiona-related assistance to industrial private woodlots and provides more support for repairing roads; after the fall storm, the Department supported private woodlot

owners with $4.6 million for cleaning up trees, preparing to replant, repairing roads and re-establishing boundary lines

Public Expectations Require Forest Professionals to Balance Competing Desires

Societal expectations for B.C.’s forests are changing. How and where timber is harvested is being widely questioned and a large segment of the population wants to halt logging of all old, large trees. The role of Indigenous Peoples in forest management and ownership is rightly expanding. Forests are increasingly used for recreation, while wildfires, bugs, drought, and flooding impact forest health, the environment, and public safety.

These expectations require registered forest professionals to balance what the public wants with what government policies and laws require. But that presents an exciting opportunity. Forest professionals care about forests; this is their passion, what their education, experience, and training prepared them for. Forest professionals have university

degrees or college diplomas; they have completed a twoyear articling process, passed a series of licensure examinations, and follow professional standards and codes. They are part of a regulated profession like accounting, medicine, or engineering. Forest professionals are accountable and willingly subject themselves to investigation and discipline overseen by the regulator, Forest Professionals British Columbia.

It is important to realize that forest professionals are not loggers and professional forestry is not logging. However, forest professionals do develop harvesting and other plans to ensure logging is done responsibly and meets the environmental and forestry laws the government has set.

Equally important is the fact that most of B.C.’s for-

ests are publicly owned. This means the B.C. government, not forest professionals, decides how a forested area is to be used—for a park, wildlife habitat, harvested for timber and wood products, water management, or often, for multiples of these uses. Currently, about 15 per cent of B.C. forests have been set aside and protected, and each year less than 0.05 per cent of B.C.’s forests are harvested and then replanted.

Forest professionals see and recognize how climate change affects our forests, understanding active forest management is a form of climate action. They also understand the way wildfire was dealt with in the past no longer works in a changing climate.

Regardless of their personal views, forest professionals are required to fol-

low the law, and keep public interest paramount when making recommendations on forest management decisions.

As professionals responsible for caring for and managing B.C.’s forests, they are constantly working to find an acceptable balance between legal (government-required) and non-legal (locally de-

sired) priorities that often conflict with each other.

Forest professionals by themselves cannot make all the changes desired by segments of the public for how forests are used. Nor are they responsible for past practices some now disagree with. But their informed voices remain vital in helping all parties understand the ecological conse-

quences of whatever policies and choices are introduced to meet the changing public desires around B.C.’s forests. Forest professionals are part of the solution to ensure B.C.’s forests are here for generations to come. SP

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tech Coming To Your Favourite Trucks In 2025

PACCAR, home of Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks, have announced their future plans to include hydrogen fuel cell technology by 2025.

PACCAR and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (Toyota) have announced an expansion of their joint efforts to develop and produce zero emissions, hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks powered by Toyota’s next-generation hydrogen fuel cell modules.

The announcement was made at ACT Expo in Anaheim, California in conjunction with parent company PACCAR’s announcement of a strategic partnership with Toyota.

Kenworth Announces T680 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Commercialization Plans

Kenworth is now accepting deposits for its first zero emissions Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck.

Kenworth has announced it will begin production of its Class 8 zero emissions T680 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), powered by Toyota fuel cell technology. Initial customer deliveries are planned for 2024 with serial

production planned in 2025. Kenworth dealers in the United States and Canada are now accepting deposits for the first of these T680 FCEV builds.

Kenworth and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (Toyota) collaborated closely on developing the T680 FCEV. Kenworth integrated Toyota’s latest advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology into its flagship T680 on-highway truck. The T680 FCEV has a range of up to 450 miles, depending upon driving conditions.

“The T680 FCEV was engineered to offer one of the longest driving ranges of any zero emissions trucks on the market,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “With quick refueling, this broadens our zero-emission product offering to include round-the-clock operations in regional haul and demonstrates FCEV potential for long haul.”

Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA) has commemorated the production of the 750,000th vehicle built at its Mt. Holly truck manufacturing plant. Keys to the milestone vehicle – a Freightliner M2 106 Plus –were presented to representatives from Penske Truck Leasing during a ceremony at the facility.

“Since it opened, the Mt. Holly plant has earned a strong reputation of manufacturing excellence based on teamwork, collaboration and partnership with our valued customers,” said Jeff Allen, senior vice president, operations and specialty vehicles, Daimler Truck North America. “As the longstanding home to our M2 and SD vehicle lines, we’re honored to present the milestone 750,000th truck from Mt. Holly, an all-new M2 106 Plus, to Penske Truck Leasing.”

Freightliner Trucks opened the Mt. Holly truck plant in May 1979. It began by building a variety of heavyduty Freightliner trucks for over-the-road applications.

In 1991, it started producing the original Business Class trucks, progenitor to the Business Class M2 line introduced in 2002, and the Plus series

line introduced in 2022. The changeover from legacy M2 and SD product lines is ongoing, and the plant will continue to ramp output of the Plus series. Mt. Holly Truck Manufacturing Plant currently employs 1800 people.

The enhanced Plus series includes the M2 106 Plus, M2 112 Plus, 108SD Plus, and 114SD Plus and are marked by significant updates to interior and electrical system of legacy vehicles. Plus series interiors feature improved ergonomics and increased storage, while its new electrical architecture gives customers access to the industry-leading Detroit Assurance with ABA5 suite of safety systems and the QuickFit Electrical System that makes integrating truck equipment to the vehicle easier than ever. When I was a kid I always thought big trucks were really cool. I can remember my dad saying “you can be anything in the world you want to be, except a jet fighter pilot. So naturally i wanted to be a jet fighter pilot for awhile. As I got older it became clear a trade was probably in my future. Through my highschool

I got to go to work with a truck driver for a day. I think that sealed the deal. I got my air ticket at 18, my class 1 learners on my 19th birthday. I drove highway freight around for a year and then headed to the bush in a logging truck. I had some great guys take chances on me, let me drive their trucks. Couldnt of done it without Tom Lornie and Ron Brooks.

After 5 years on highway logging trucks, including a couple adventurous winters in the kootanys, I headed to camp driving off highway in 2010.

I was lucky again, work-

ing for a great company that’s grown over the years, changed ownership, yet retained the same values and respectful relationship with their employees. They have mostly Hayes trucks. I drive a 72 HDX. It was re built a year ago, getting a series 60 engine, Allison transmission and 121 diffs, paint and interior upgrades. We work on the N island, mainland inlets and islands in between. Anywhere we’re working for mosaic is my preferred spot. They support their contractors really well.

The first 5 years driving for small contractors I definitely ran into some guys who didn’t want to work with a woman. It never really bothered me though. I’d just try to keep up and not break anything. SP

Arbec Forest Products Inc., a major Québec producer of OSB panels, has completed the acquisition of the Forex OSB mill located in Amos (Québec).

Arbec is thus consolidating its position in the Canadian forest industry and now manufactures approximately 5% of the OSB production in North America.

From Drag Lines to Drag Racing

In the summer of 1981, this H.D. Hayes truck, fitted with 10 foot off-highway bunks, was owned and operated by Al Dinez of Prince George, BC.

He was contracted to McKay Logging Ltd. with Northwood Pulp and Timber at the time, working in the Bowron Lakes area near Prince George. These logs were loaded by Rod “Hot Rod” Belanger with a Cat 966C loader.

Retired from logging, this Hayes spent some wild years participating in “Big Rig” drag races in Prince George —even placing 1st and 2nd occasionally.

More recently, the Hayes got dressed up with a trailer, and came out of retirement to make an appearance at the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Hayes Trucks in Port Alberni last year.

Later in the 1980s, the Hayes was purchased by Brad Gallant. A little paint, a new motor and transmission in the 1990s, and it continued to work in the Hagen region, as well as Fort

One Tree Planted And Forests Ontario Partner To Plant 17.5 Million Trees Over Five Years

Creating healthy, new forests is one of the most effective, nature-based solutions in combating climate change and mitigating the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather.

With the help of their planting partners, One Tree Planted (92+ million) and Forests Ontario / Forest Recovery Canada (41+ million) have collectively planted more than 133 million trees.

In an effort to give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity, and help forest restoration efforts throughout Canada, One Tree Planted is partnering with Forests Ontario and its national division, Forest Recovery Canada, to plant 17.5 million trees over the next five years.

“We are excited to bring our partnership with Forests Ontario to the next level,” Matt Hill, Founder & Chief Environmental Optimist, One Tree Planted, says. “Together, we will plant millions of trees across Canada over the next five years. We look forward to everything we will be able to accomplish for forests, biodiversity, and communities.”

One Tree Planted is a non-profit that is focused on global reforestation. Since 2014, they have planted over

92 million trees in 80+ countries across North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Pacific. Their work is done in partnership with local communities and knowledgeable experts to create lasting impact for nature, people, and wildlife.

Forests Ontario and its partners have developed the expertise and infrastructure to grow and track tree planting from seed to healthy forest. Through its comprehensive network of partners and programs, Forests Ontario and Forest Recovery Canada have planted more than 41 million trees, resulting in 20,500 hectares of new forest created across more than 8,300 project sites.

“Our earliest work with One Tree Planted was identifying one-off planting sites for support and we are excited to grow that partnership into a collaboration that will see the creation of healthy forests across our country,”
