The event was the culmination of a three day public photo exhibit held in honour of contributions from employees, their family, and friends to the Together for Communities initiative that featured scenes from over 3500 Holcim Canada employee volunteer acts. In attendance were several of the community organizations and municipalities that sup-

Kubota Engines Meet T4 Standards

In order to comply with the new standards, Kubota utilized a variety of technologies such as Common Rail System, an electronic fuel injection system, for optimization of combustion processes, Exhaust-Gas-Recirculation Device (EGR)*3 and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)*4 for improvement of emission performance . These technologies will bring more durable, quieter and fuel efficient engines with minimal impact to the engine package for ease of installation into OEMs machines.

In additional to the above, Kubota also developed and introduced a new emission-compliant diesel engine (engine output range between 19 to 37kW), which utilizes Kubota’s proprietary “TVCS”*5 combustion system and unique DPF regeneration system.

Kubota also obtained EPA and CARB certifications for diesel engines with an output range below 19kW. Of special note is that Kubota obtained the emission certifications without adding new devices, but with further optimization and improvement of

Powerscreen XH320Sr impresses logan Aggregate recycling inc.

The Powerscreen XH320SR impact crusher is helping Logan Aggregate Recycling Inc. to meet increased demand in a compact, fuel efficient package.

Founded by husband-andwife team Joe and Michelle Logan in the spring of 2010, the company began as a service.

“The popularity of recycled aggregates is growing, but local suppliers of these aggregates previously had to rely on contract crushing companies from as far away as Pennsylvania and Ohio,” Joe Logan said. “I have always been a firm believer in doing business in person, with our customers and employees alike.

We have tried to focus our service area within a two to three hour radius from Richmond in order to always have a management presence on our projects.”

Logan noted that he grew up in the industry working at a construction equipment dealership that

his grandfather started.

Working in all areas of the company gave him valuable experience with operating equipment in addition to the opportunity to build extensive relationships within the industry.

Logan recently purchased a Powerscreen XH320SR impact crusher from Jeff Ford, Regional Manager of Northern and Central Virginia at Powerscreen Mid Atlantic Inc. “The XH320SR is a great machine,” Ford said. “It is an upgraded version of the Powerscreen 4242SR. A couple of the upgrades include a larger crushing chamber and the Scania engine. The closed circuit machine gives the customer the advantage to transport the machine all in one move to small and tight job sites. The XH320SR is a high-performance machine and is rated at 320 tph.”

Logan’s purchase of the machine was in order to offer customers a solu-

tion for processing materials at plant locations where space is limited.

“More and more, we are seeing that asphalt and concrete producers are using every inch of available space in their plants,” he explained. “The 320SR is a closed circuit machine, meaning that the crusher, screen and re-circulating conveyor are all mounted on one track-mounted chassis. The finished product is then conveyed to a stockpile by a track-mounted stacking conveyor. This significantly reduces the footprint of our operation and allows customers to use their real estate for stockpiling material and loading trucks. Additionally, we can move the set-up around the site very quickly and easily.”

The machine has been in service for Logan Aggregate Recycling since mid-February and has already logged approximately 1,000 hours.

“We have been very impressed with the fuel

economy of the Tier IVinterim compliant Scania engine,” Logan said. “We also try to practice good housekeeping, and we can walk the 320SR out of the way, clean and grade the working area, and be set up again and ready to run in a matter of minutes.”

Although Logan has rented equipment from Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic in the past, this machine was their first purchase from the company.

“I met Joe Logan while he was using a competitor’s machine,” Ford said.

“When he decided that he was going to purchase another crusher, I took him to see the XH320. Joe immediately saw value in the crusher. The Powerscreen crusher was more expensive, but Joe recognized the quality and realized that we could offer him a higher level of support than any other dealer in Virginia.”

Logan has not been disappointed. “We have been extremely pleased with their support,” he said.

“Parts and wear items have been in stock, or shipped the next day. Their service technicians also are extremely knowledgeable and professional.” b

m.E.E.P. Program recognized With Community recognition Award The City of Saint John has won a “Community Recognition Award” for its Municipal Energy Efficiency Program (MEEP), the first program of its kind in Canada.

The award was announced by Bruce Fitch, Minister of Environment and Local Government in December. The Village of Beresford also won an award. The award serves to recognize community programs and promote best practices and leadership in the municipal sector.

“Sustainable infrastructure has been identified as a priority of Common Council. This program ensures that our City facilities are built and run in an energy efficient manner,” said Mayor Mel Norton. “This results in tremendous benefits for the environment in significant financial savings.”

The MEEP was established in 1997 as Saint John’s environmental and fiscal code. Saint John was the first city in the country

to establish such a program.

The City hired an engineer to develop, manage and implement the energy management program.

Energy efficiency is now ingrained in operations within the City itself.

Efforts have been spread across all areas of operations and include retrofits to arenas, waste water treatment facilities, and street lights.

The program has been very successful in terms of reducing energy use and GHG reductions. It is estimated that the total annual energy savings as of 2011 is $1.8M with an annual reduction of 6,300 tonnes in GHG emissions.

The City has also been able to leverage the MEEP to obtain Green Municipal Funds through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). In total grants and loans, The City of Saint John has been awarded GMF funding to complete the Canada Games Aquatic

Centre Energy Efficiency retrofit ($1.79M in GMF funding), the Saint John Transit Commission New Construction LEED Silver Transit and Operation Centre ($4.4M in GMF funding), and LEED certified Police Headquarters ($11M in GMF funding).

Over 90 City facilities are covered under the MEEP. These include arenas, community centers, pumping stations and office buildings. The latest technology in heating, lighting, ventilation and air conditioning, HVAC, refrigeration, heat recovery and building envelope systems has been installed throughout City buildings.

The program has won a number of awards including: a Premier’s Award for Energy Efficiency, a Commercial Energy Efficiency Champion from Efficiency NB, a Milton F. Gregg Conservation Award from the Conservation Council of NB, and a M. Hill Sustainable Community Award from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

The program was also highlighted as part of the City’s Top 7 Intelligent Community of the Year application. b

Cummins Honours Seven Employees With Dr. Julius Perr Award Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has honoured seven employees with the Company’s highest technical award for their work on two inventions that have yielded significant advancements in engine components.

Mark D. Akins, Bryan W. Milburn, Dennis M. King and Greg M. Pataky were recognized for their work to improve turbocharger technology on Cummins’ midrange engines. The group patented an innovation that allowed Cummins to control turbo speed without the use of a real speed sensor by using a virtual speed sensor for the Chrysler Ram pickup. The virtual speed sensor improved quality and also reduced the need for several engine components, resulting in increased reliability for Cummins engine customers.

This speed control methodology proves beneficial in many ways.

For customers, the speed control system allows increased fuel conservation, reducing costs for drivers, and it significantly reduces emissions and noise of the trucks. In a nine-year period from 2003-2011, fleet owners using Cummins power saved approximately $312 million of fuel savings due to a reduction in approximately 81 million gallons of fuel used for the fleets. Over the same nineyear period, this equates to a reduction of CO2 emissions by 825,000 metric tons or to the equivalent of taking 152,000 cars off the road.

By Mark Wolfe The construction industry is expected to receive a major economic boost in the coming years as a result of last summer’s governmental approval for the creation of a new bridge, border plazas, and access routes connecting the border between Windsor and Detroit. Known as the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC), the new bridge will be located approximately three kilometres west of the Ambassador Bridge. In addition to the DRIC project, the Herb Gray Parkway (formerly the Windsor-Essex Parkway) is currently under construction, and will connect Highway 401 to the new bridge. The entire project will cost $3.5 to $4 billion to complete. The new border crossing is expected to create 10,000 to 15,000 construction jobs in both Ontario and Michigan. Not only is this good news for the thousands of contractors, heavy equipment operators, and other industry professionals who will be hired to work on the project, it will also deliver major benefits to the trucking industry by creating a quicker and smoother artery for trade in and out of Canada. But the building of the bridge will not be without its challenges.

“From the construct-build perspective, this is a challenging project because we are not allowed, through the process of the environmental assessment, to put piers into the water,” says Mark

Butler, spokesperson, Transport Canada, Windsor Gateway Project. As a result, construction professionals will need to find appropriate locations for the piers on land, plus an area that will be narrow enough to locate a span with the piers far enough apart. “The actual bridge itself will be built through a public-private partnership. The private sector concessionaire … would then go out and contract firms, and logically they are going to be looking at local firms and local workers,” Butler says.

“It’s going to be good for Windsor-Essex, Ontario, and Canada. They are going to be sourcing workers and products from both sides of the border.” Once all permits are approved, industry standards indicate that it will take approximately two years to finalize the bridge design through the RFQ/RFP process. Subsequently, it is estimated that construction will take four to five years to complete. However, construction of the Herb Gray Parkway has been progressing steadily since 2011. As of December 2012, approximately 4,100 project staff and subcontractor personnel from over 350 companies, agencies and organizations completed the mandatory training required to work on the parkway, with 98 per cent of subcontracts and 90 per cent of major purchase orders awarded to local or partially local companies.

Ongoing parkway projects include road construction, tunnel and bridge construction (including the pile driving necessary for support), utility and sewer relocation, drainage, and excavation to create the below-grade extension of Highway 401. Upon completion by the summer of 2015, the 11-kilometre parkway will ease the movement of goods and people to and from the Windsor/Detroit border, separate local and international traffic, and eliminate stop-and-go traffic in residential areas. b

12 Ways To Make Roads Safer For Pedestrians Walking is inexpensive, emission-free, uses no fossil fuel, offers important health benefits and, for those without substantially impaired mobility, is accessible regardless of income. Walking is the most fundamental form of mobility.

But walking can often also be challenging. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in traffic crashes. The number of pedestrians killed on roads is estimated at above 400 000 per year, i.e. around a third of annual road fatalities around the globe.

Pedestrian Safety will be the focus of the United

Nations Road Safety Week from 6-13 May 2013. A report released by the International Transport Forum (ITF) at the OECD highlights the role of national governments in improving pedestrian mobility and proposes 12 sets of measures to create safer walking environments.

“We need to learn again how to walk. That means learning how to organise the space for walking” said José Viegas, Secretary-General of ITF, on the occasion of the report’s launch. “Urban environments are often making it difficult to enjoy this most fundamental form of moving. This report will

help governments to take the right steps towards better mobility and more liveable cities.”

ITF road safety expert Véronique Feypell de la Beaumelle added: “Pedestrians are amongst the road users most vulnerable to traffic injury. It has become highly challenging, especially for older people and children, to cope with the complex, sometimes hostile, traffic conditions that characterise today’s cities and towns.”

The study, entitled “Pedestrian Safety, Urban Space and Health”, was prepared by a Working Group of transport experts and urban planners from 19 countries and the World Health Organization under the leadership of the ITF. Key facts on walking from the report:

• Walking represents up to 50% of trips in urban areas. The vitality of a city is closely linked to people being out and about on foot for many purposes.

• An 80% drop in pedestrian risk of death is achievable by traffic speed reductions from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. Lowering motorised traffic speeds is a key to improving pedestrian safety.

Atlas Copco To Acquire MEYCO Atlas Copco (Schweiz) AG has agreed to acquire the Switzerland-based MEYCO Equipment business from BASF Construction Chemicals Europe AG. The acquisition broadens Atlas Copco’s offering with mobile equipment for applying sprayed concrete (shotcreting) in underground operations.

MEYCO, with offices and an assembly facility in Winterthur, Switzerland, has about 40 employees and had revenues in 2011 of around MEUR 20 (MSEK 175). Its products include carriermounted concrete spraying equipment, concrete spraying arms, pump and dosing units. Current sales are mainly for underground construction projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Both parties have agreed to not disclose financial details of the transaction.

Atlantic Panel To Be Established The process to establish a selection panel to appoint a new full-time Chair and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Canada–Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C–NLOPB) has been launched under the terms of the Canada– Newfoundland Atlantic Accord Implementation Act. The position of Chair and CEO became vacant on October 26, 2012. Until a new Chair and CEO is named, the Board has designated Ed Drover as Acting Chair

and Max Ruelokke as Acting CEO. “We are working with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador toward the appointment of a new, qualified fulltime Chair and CEO,” said the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “The outcome of this independent selection process will be new leadership of the Board that is based on merit and ability by early 2013.”

land Atlantic Accord Implementation Act provides for the creation of a selection panel. Both the federal and provincial governments must appoint one member to the selection panel within 30 days. CNH And Kobelco End Alliance Kobe Steel, Ltd. and group company Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. recently announced that the initial term of their global alliance with CNH Global N.V. was to end on Dec. 31, 2012.

CNH also made a similar announcement. The parties determined not to renew their agreement.

The global alliance, which began in January 2002, was set for a 10-year period. With the market environment changing over the past 10 years, Kobe Steel, Kobelco Construction Machinery and CNH have been re-examining the agreement and discussing the future of their global alliance. Looking ahead at future market conditions, Kobelco Construction Machinery and CNH have mutually decided to operate their businesses on their own, and with the initial term of the original agreement ending on Dec. 31, 2012, the three companies decided not to renew their alliance.

According to Kobe Steel press release, the cooperative relationship among the three companies for 10 years under the global alliance has been meaning-

ful and significant. From now on, while respecting their positions, Kobelco Construction Machinery and CNH will grow their own business operations throughout the world.

Under the global alliance with CNH, Kobelco Construction Machinery’s sales and marketing rights were limited to the Asia and Pacific area, including Australia. As of Jan. 1, 2013, Kobelco Construction Machinery will market and provide services on its own in North America, Europe, South America, the Middle East, Africa, and the CIS countries. With the ending of the global alliance, equity participation with CNH will also be terminated. At the end of the year, Kobe Steel will buy back the 20-percent equity that CNH currently holds in Kobelco Construction Machinery. As for the equity that Kobelco Construction Machinery holds in CNH’s affiliate companies, the shares will be sold back to CNH. After the initial term of the global alliance ends, CNH will continue to be entitled to manufacture and sell hydraulic excavators currently licensed

from Kobelco Construction Machinery. In addition, for a five-year period until the end of December 2017, CNH will have the right to procure hydraulic excavators from Kobelco Construction Machinery on an OEM basis. Servicing parts will continue for 10 years.

Kobelco Construction Machinery will have the right to receive running royalties for the licensed hydraulic excavators manufactured by CNH for a five-year period until the end of December 2017.

History of the CNH - Kobe Steel - Kobelco Global Alliance In September 2001, Kobe Steel, Kobelco Construction Machinery and CNH signed an agreement to form a global alliance. In January 2002, Kobe Steel transferred 10 percent of its shares in Kobelco Construction Machinery to CNH. In addition, Kobelco America Holdings Inc. transferred 65 percent of its shares in Kobelco Construction Machinery America L.L.C. to CNH. At the same time, Kobelco Construction Machinery received from CNH 20 percent of the shares in New Holland Kobelco Construction Machinery S.p.A., a manufacturing and sales unit in Europe.

Kobelco Future Plans With the ending of the global alliance with CNH Global N.V., Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. from January 2013 will be able to grow its business on its own and sell the KOBELCO brand hydraulic excavators in world markets.

These machines are wellknown for their advanced technologies such as low fuel consumption, low noise and onboard GPS. Kobelco Construction Machinery will build its own sales network and promote the KOBELCO brand around the world.

With the ending of the global alliance with CNH, Kobelco Construction Machinery will independently rebuild its sales and service network in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, CIS and Africa. It will once again conduct business activities in those markets. Prior to the formation of the global alliance, Kobelco had been operating on its own in those six areas. The KOBELCO brand is especially highly regarded in North America and South America, and those markets have high expectations for Kobelco Construction Machinery’s re-entry.

Kobelco Construction Machinery will immediately place on the markets of those six areas its latest models with core features of lower fuel consumption, lower noise and onboard GPS. New models that also comply with the latest exhaust gas regulations will be launched onto the North American and European markets starting from April 2013. Kobelco plans to develop products that meet local needs and enter markets where it was unable to directly play an active role under the global alliance with CNH. It also aims to increase its sales volume and market share that had gone down under the global alliance.

Bell Appoints Wajax As Its Canadian Partner South African heavy equipment manufacturer Bell Equipment has appointed Wajax Equipment as its distributor and dealer of Bell Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs) in Canada with immediate effect. It is the first major step in the company’s plans to relaunch the brand in the Americas after twelve years of providing product under another brand.

Wajax Equipment is a leading first tier heavy equipment distributor in Canada, with over 32 locations across Canada, with Hitachi Heavy Construction and Mining Equipment being their core business. Hitachi is a common thread, also being Bell Equipment’s distributor in the AsiaPacific region.

Commenting on their appointment, Bell Equipment Group Chief Executive, Gary Bell said, “Canada is viewed as a strong ADT market, ranking in the top five largest ADT markets worldwide, so we are very pleased to be associated with the Wajax Group and to have a strong partner to represent our brand and support our product in this territory. Bell Equipment’s Managing Director of Bell UK, Neville Paynter, who heads up the company’s management of the Canadian territory, said that in accordance with marketing agreements already in place, Wajax will initially distribute the 35 to 50 ton range until January 1, 2014, where after the complete range of ADTs will be offered.

Said Paynter: “This is the first time our Canadian customers will have on offer our 50-ton truck. The B50, with its 50-ton rated payload, is the world’s largest ADT. More importantly the solid reputation it has earned in harsh mining applications in Africa and Europe over the past eight years means the B50 brings a proven track record to this region.

“The Canadian market will be supplied Bell trucks from the company’s German assembly plant. Production at this facility will increase next year to offer greater flexibility to accommodate our Canadian opportunities. Our flexibility will be critical to securing orders and delivering product on time,” he said.

Importantly the trucks will be fitted with the Mercedes Benz SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) engine and the filter free Bell@dvantage system, to ensure compliance with emission standards and maximize fuel savings.

Hockey rivals Face off in Allstate Canada’s urban Safe Driving Challenge After two months without professional hockey, loyal fans may be itching to find new ways to keep their “friendly” city rivalries alive, so Allstate Insurance Company of Canada offers the Urban Safe Driving Challenge: a head-tohead look at auto collision claims from Allstate Canada customers between July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2012, in five NHL cities (Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal).

drivers reported fewer collisions per 100 cars, a collision rate of 5.63 per cent, compared to Edmonton’s 6.02 per cent collision rate.

Over in the Eastern Conference, not only did Montreal end last season behind both the Leafs and the Senators, according to Allstate Canada claims data, the city finished last to its bitter rivals in collisions frequency: 8.54 per cent for Montreal, 6.12 per cent for Toronto and 6.10 per cent for Ottawa.

Three of the urban centres saw their collision rate decrease between 2008-2010 and 2010--2012.

Calgary’s rate dropped by 5.63 per cent; Edmonton’s reduced by 4.87 per cent and Toronto’s collision rate decreased by 4.76 per cent.

Allstate Canada created the Urban Safe Driving Challenge to generate discussion about driving behaviour in Canada and to help keep roads and communities safer for everyone by emphasizing the importance of safe driving. “We’re pleased to see fewer collisions in three of our Challenge cities.

Whether this is because of an increased awareness of the dangers of hand-held devices starting to take effect, drivers reducing their

speed, increased police activity or other influences we don’t yet know, we hope to see this trend continue,” says Saskia Matheson of Allstate Canada.

When analyzing the data for the Urban Safe Driving Challenge, Allstate Canada noted a worrying trend about when collisions take place and the severity of injuries that are a result of these crashes. “Drivers may be surprised to learn that our claims data and studies have shown that more fatal collisions happen when conditions are clear and roads are dry,” says Matheson. “Speed is often the issue.”

Allstate Canada reminds drivers that collisions can happen at any time of the year, not just in bad weather conditions. “We encourage all drivers to be attentive, sensible and patient behind the wheel to help keep our roads safer for drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists,” adds Matheson. “Keep your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the road, and your mind on the job.”

Toronto, the city may be headed for the penalty box as its collision rate increased by 3.95 per cent between 2008-2010 and 2010-2012.

• Montreal also saw a 3.41 per cent increase.

• According to the City of Edmonton Motor Vehicle Collisions report for 2011, someone was either injured or killed in 14.95 per cent of the city’s collisions. The Calgary Police Service reports that 7.43% of collisions resulted in an injury or fatality in 2011.

• While Montreal had the highest collision rate in the study, according to the service de police de la Ville de Montreal annual report for 2011, when looking at severity of collisions only 16.68 per cent of collisions reported to the police resulted in an injury or fatality.

This percentage is higher in both Ottawa and Toronto. The 2011 Ottawa Road Safety Report shows that someone was injured or killed in 24.92 per cent of reported collisions, and according to the 2011 Annual Statistical Report from the Toronto Police Service, someone was hurt or killed in 19.87 per cent of reported collisions.

Data is not available for the other NHL cities, Vancouver or Winnipeg, as these cities are covered by government-run insurance companies. b
