Ritchie Bros. 2.0 With its first auction close to 60 years ago, Ritchie Bros. has been a mainstay in the Canadian equipment industry “forever”. In 2016, the company sold more than 399,000 equipment items and trucks for 53,500 consigners around the world. Still, even with those massive numbers, the company says there are customers they couldn’t help because their sales model wasn’t diverse enough— until now, they say. Ritchie Bros. are experts in unreserved, onsite auction events. Consignor equipment is transported to a central Ritchie Bros. auction location, interested bidders inspect equipment in person or online and all items are sold on a set date without minimum bids or reserve prices. In the past several years the company has added new sales solutions to help customers in dif-

ferent ways, including private treaty and onlineonly sales. But the company made their biggest addition this year when they acquired U.S.-based online equipment marketplace, IronPlanet. Established in 1999, IronPlanet has been a strong competitor to Ritchie Bros. for years. As a leader in onlineonly auctions—with unreserved and reserve options—Ritchie Bros. felt IronPlanet was the perfect complement to their onsite auction events. The two companies came together in June of this year, and we recently spoke with Brian Glenn, Ritchie Bros. Head of Sales for Canada, to ask a few questions about how the company is now “better set to serve its customers”. Why did Ritchie Bros. acquire IronPlanet? How will this acquisition benefit customers? We help tens of thou-

sands of customers each year with our unreserved onsite auctions. But there are tens of thousands more customers who will never sell through an unreserved auction. There are also customers who won’t sell certain assets by unreserved auction—they need additional price control for specific assets. And, there are remote customers who don’t want to pay transport fees to get their equipment to one of our sites. Before IronPlanet we didn’t have the right tool to help these customers. Now we do. IronPlanet has 1.9 million users and holds unreserved online auctions every Thursday, helping customers quickly turn their assets into cash without transporting it anywhere. IronPlanet also offers a reserved price marketplace. Over the years I have met with all sorts of customers that we couldn’t help because we didn’t have the right solutions to meet their needs, now we have the tool kit and are better set to serve our customers.”

With this increased focus on online sales, what happens to your live auctions? “Online auctions offer a number of benefits to buyers and sellers, no doubt, but we still feel nothing compares to the excitement and atmosphere of an unreserved onsite auction— with a live auctioneer, equipment rolling up for bidding, and each item being sold without minimum bids or reserve prices. We have no plans to

Page 5

stop holding onsite auctions, in fact, we are constantly looking at ways to make these auctions bigger and better, with more services to make the buying and selling experience better than ever.” What’s next for the new Ritchie Bros.? “We just recently launched a new online sales channel called Marketplacee, the first new product created with the combined talents of Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet. When you need to sell

t

equipment and want control over the price and timing of the sale, Marketplacee gives you the choice of selling your assets at a fixed price, negotiating offers or setting a reserve price. Buyers and sellers can check out Marketplacee today at ironplanet. com/marketplace-e. We are also working on a number of onsite auction customer experience initiatives that we plan to roll-out next year—stay tuned!” b Source: Ritchie Bros.

globally. Its design and engineering is on the cutting edge of infrastructure development, and the support given to the project by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and its dealer Flagler Construction Equipment (Flagler) epitomizes the modern job site. “What we’re seeing at the I-4 Ultimate project is one of the most advanced infrastructure projects in the world,” explained Tony Spake, Commercial Business Manager at Volvo CE. “Some 600 engineers contributed to the project’s design-engineering, so there are numerous examples of leading safety and traffic flow features. But this project also will help define how future highway systems are financed and managed, and how they will interact with the spaces they inhabit.” Powerful partnerships At its essence, the project is a $2.3 billion reconstruction of a 21-mile stretch of Interstate 4, from west of Kirkman Road in Orange County to east of State Road 434 in Seminole County, cutting through Orlando along the way. The work involves the construction of two dynamic tolled Express Lanes in each direction, 140 bridges, 15 interchanges, nine toll gantries, architectural features and elements, and mixed-use spaces. SGL Constructors (SGL) is the construction joint venture of Skanska, Granite and Lane. The I-4 Ultimate project is a Public-

Private Partnership (P3) among FDOT and I-4 Mobility Partners (I-4MP). The members of the I-4MP team include: • Skanska Infrastructure Development (equity member) • John Laing Investments (equity member) • SGL - Construction Joint Venture - Skanska (lead joint venture partner), Granite Construction and Lane Construction • HDR and Jacobs Engineering Group (design joint venture) • Infrastructure Corporation of America (lead operations and maintenance firm) Experts say that these partnerships among private companies, state governments, municipalities and taxpayers are globally on the rise, and that they improve both the operations of megaprojects and their overall success rate. “The infrastructure industry has literally transformed itself through PPPs,” explained Dr. Steven E. Polzin, a director at the Center for Urban Transportation at the University of South Florida. “They improve project financing and increase efficiencies in terms of process and timing. They also do a great job in minimizing the disruption of traffic during construction, which is important because the I-4 reconstruction is a lengthy project. This is a good learning experience and will be a model for future endeavors.”

December 2017 Telematics tenacity The use of telematics and predictive analytics is also an increasing global trend in infrastructure construction, and it’s being used heavily on the I-4 project. Where construction has lagged behind other industries in adopting new technologies, the lower costs of sensors, cloud connectivity and computing power have all contributed to an increase in the adoption of telematics Approximately 70 Volvo excavators and compactors are active on the I-4 Ultimate project, and they are all being monitored by Volvo’s ActiveCare Direct telematics program. The program can detect critical machine failures and predict maintenance needs, increasing uptime on the project. Once again, a partnership is key to the program’s success. Volvo CE and Flagler are working together to maintain the project’s fleet, with Volvo actively monitoring the machines and alerting Flagler to potential issues. Flagler, which sold and rented most of the equipment on the project to SGL, then employs its field technicians to perform a fix or maintenance action on the job site. “The use of telematics and predictive analytics is set to explode in the construction industry,” said Dave Adams, product sales manager of connected services at Volvo CE. “There are potentially millions, if not billions, in potential savings we could see from increasing machine uptime through a program such as ActiveCare Direct. Not only does it help solve equipment issues more quickly, it helps avoid the catastrophic failures that can bring an entire job site to a halt.” Dynamic designs The I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project is a great example of how an infrastructure project can transcend its core function. While the I-4 corridor is essentially ‘just’ a system of roads and bridges, leading-edge design features will change the face of the communities it serves. The project is on the global forefront of a type of design thinking that creates value where it previously didn’t exist. Take for example the project’s environmental Continued on page 7

considerations, which won the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s Envision Platinum Certification. Some 99% of the concrete and steel removed from old roads and bridges has been recycled, for example, and much of the new I-4 makes use of recycled materials. Or take into account the many features being built that serve people not actually driving on the highway in vehicles: rail and pedestrian crossings, overpasses

and bike trails, mixeduse spaces under bridges and overpasses that will be turned into sporting venues, shopping centers and restaurants. Aesthetic features, such water fountains, city medallions, LED lighting, artwork and dramatic landscapes will contribute to an overall sense of esteem and pride in the communities along the corridor. According to Foresight, the global infrastructure report created by profes-

sional services firm KPMG, these types of considerations and design features have become expected by the population: “We have seen increasing pressure on government — and through governments — to prioritize infrastructure investments that deliver greater social and environmental benefit; simply put, to become more responsible leaders.” Community core Several initiatives that will improve safety and

traffic flow along the interstate also reflect global trends, such as the straightening of curves, the leveling of highway grades, the installation of tolled express lanes and the increase in length of acceleration and deceleration lanes for incoming and outgoing traffic. Floridians say they look forward to the new I-4 cor-

ridor. Highways that can move commuters more quickly and safely improve daily life, ease business costs and contribute to a higher standard of living — especially in a region that hosts some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. “It’s a massive, multifaceted project with a strong Public-Private part-

nership in an obviously busy corridor that’s critical to the region,” Polzin said. “This project will have some physical and social impact, and it will improve mobility in the community, which allows it to thrive, compete, and remain attractive for business and travelers.” b Source: Volvo

Craig Blair Receives SFI President’s Award The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) announced the 2017 SFI President’s Award at the SFI Annual Conference held on September 28th. Craig Blair, President and CEO, Resource Management Service (RMS) LLC is this year’s winner. Craig is recognized for providing the vision and

strong leadership that helped Project Learning Tree (PLT) find a new home at SFI. Founded in 1976, PLT is an award-winning environmental education program that uses trees and forests as windows on the world to increase youth understanding of the environment and actions they can take to conserve it.

Craig is a current SFI board member who previously served as Chair of the SFI Board of Directors from April 2015 to April 2017. By providing leadership for PLT’s move to SFI, Craig showed how much we should all value the role youth education can play in caring for forests. “Craig was able to intuitively see the connection between environmental education and the long-term health and future of the forest sector. He also immediately understood what a strong fit Project Learning Tree would

be for SFI’s community engagement programs. When the decisions were being made about a shared future for PLT and SFI, Craig Blair was Chairman of the SFI Board, and he led the way in helping both the PLT and SFI community envision a stronger future having both initiatives under one roof,” said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc. I truly believe the future is brighter for both Project Learning Tree and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and most importantly for all those who benefit from their outreach and initiatives,” said Craig Blair, past Chair of the SFI Board. The decision to bring the PLT program under SFI’s umbrella is furthering SFI’s and PLT’s reach. Together, SFI and PLT are working to ensure today’s youth can be effective future leaders with a strong understanding of the value of responsibly managed forests, a commitment to sustainability, the natural world that we depend upon, and the skills to make responsible decisions about the environment. PLT has consistently received prestigious awards and recognition from leading educational and community or-

ganizations. PLT state coordinators, workshop facilitators, and educators have won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. More than one quarter of U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are PLT GreenSchools. PLT’s instructional materials are aligned with state and national academic standards and meet or exceed the North American Association for Environmental Education’s Guidelines for Excellence. PLT’s Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood curriculum won a Learning Magazine Teachers’ Choice Award and PLT has also received straight A’s in environmental education from the California Department of Education. More than 20,000 educators attend PLT workshops every year and becoming an SFI program is helping PLT grow and reach new audiences in Canada and across the globe in diverse ways. “SFI sees environmental education and community engagement as mutually reinforcing in large part be-

cause of Craig’s leadership at SFI and RMS. One of Craig’s signature educational initiatives at RMS was to launch a scholarship program for African American students to study forestry,” Abusow said. “On the economic front, Craig’s global experience in investment management, business development and client relations enhances SFI’s global perspective on emerging forestry and supply chain issues.” Craig became President and CEO of RMS in October 2010, with responsibility for RMS’s investments and operating businesses in the United States, Brazil, China, Australia and New Zealand. As President, he leads an experienced team of forestry and financial professionals that manage a global timberland portfolio of over $4 billion. Over a 35-year career he has held a variety of positions at RMS and in the forest products industry, with experience in acquisitions, resource planning, forest management and wood procurement. Craig is Chair of the National Alliance of Forest Owners board of directors. b Source: SFI

Daimler Trucks North America And Thomas Built Buses Debut Innovations At NAPT Thomas Built Buses, along with its parent company Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), debuted leading technologies and innovations at the NAPT trade show on November 7, 2017. Thomas Built’s booth featured key technological advancements from Thomas Built Buses, and from Detroit Diesel Corporation, Freightliner Trucks and Mercedes-Benz USA. “Daimler Trucks North America is at the forefront of developing technologies and innovations that are shaping the transportation industry as a whole,” said Caley Edgerly, president and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “We’re excited to share some of DTNA’s latest innovations as well as many emerging technologies that will continue to transform the pupil transportation industry.” Thomas Built Buses continually incorporates innovations that make school

buses safer, more efficient and easier to maintain. These include safety features in the new BusWise suite of technologies and the revolutionary Saf-TAnchor Removable Seat (S.T.A.R.S.) mounting system for buses for students with special needs. “Continuous improvement and dedication to building the most reliable and safest vehicles are part of our culture,” said Edgerly. “Thomas Built Buses leverages resources and innovative research solutions from our parent company Daimler Trucks North America for the development of many of our products. Sometimes our DTNA partnerships are in the forefront, such as the debut of the new Detroit DD5 and DD8 engines, while other DTNA partnerships are not as obvious. That is why we are excited to give the pupil transportation industry a taste of what we see

every day: innovations in the world of transportation that may one day influence what we see on school buses in the future.” Saf-T-Liner C2 Electric First Generation Bus, Jouley: This is the newest addition to Thomas Built Buses’ product line-up. The Saf-T-Liner C2 Electric is an all-electric school bus that is powered by the Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI) PowerDrive 7000EV engine, which provides 100-160kWh of battery energy and a baseline 100mile range with expandable mileage available. It comes equipped with the EDI PowerSuite, which provides vehicle control software and EDI PowerTracker telematics and diagnostics system that track bus location and real-time monitoring of potential issues. The EDI Power2E which provides exportable power comes standard on the Saf-T-Liner

C2 Electric. Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 Equipped with Detroit DD5 Engine with Detroit Connect Virtual TechnicianSM Remote Diagnostics Service: The popular Saf-T-Liner C2 will be equipped with the new Detroit DD5 engine, the latest in medium-duty engine technology. This new engine will deliver power, performance, best-in-class fuel economy, reliability, easier maintenance and a low total cost of ownership. It features top-load oil and fuel filters and the longest service intervals in its class, with up to 45,000mile oil and fuel filter change intervals.* It meets 2017 greenhouse gas (GHG17) standards, utilizing such innovative technology as variable exhaust cam phasing, which allows additional heat into the exhaust. This new technology enables efficient operation of the aftertreatment system in low speed stop-and-go operations, which is ideal for school buses, and dramatically decreases the aftertreatment headaches currently experienced by many fleets. The DD5 engine also comes equipped with the Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostics service, the most in-depth and the only telematics solution of its kind in the industry. (Or 18 months or 1,500 hours, whichever comes sooner). Detroit DD8 engine with Detroit Connect Virtual Technician Remote Diagnostics Service: The Detroit DD8 engine is a 7.7L in-line 6-cylinder medium-duty engine specifically tailored to the demanding requirements of Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner® HDX. It boasts a horsepower range of 260-300HP and a torque

range of 660–860 lb.-ft. The DD8 offers longer maintenance intervals and improved fuel efficiency. It meets 2017 greenhouse gas (GHG17) standards and utilizes a global medium-duty engine platform that benefits the pupil transportation market particularly well. It also employs such innovative technology as variable exhaust cam phasing, for more efficient aftertreatment system performance, helping to reduce issues previously experienced in low-speed or stop-and-go operations. It also offers the most advanced connectivity platform in the pupil transportation industry, Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostics service. Mercedes-Benz S-Class: The Mercedes-Benz SClass is the epitome of innovation on the road. It is equipped with technologies and innovations that are state-of-the-art for the transportation industry and possible precursors for the future of the school bus industry. Stability and control have never been easier, with features like the Magic Body Control, which is the world’s first proactive suspension system. It scans the road ahead with a stereo camera and generates forces to counteract bumps and dips as you reach them, not after. And driver comfort and control don’t get much better with the panoramic control panel, which is composed of dual 12.3inch widescreens set sideby-side to create a seamless floating frame. Each screen, which includes a reconfigurable instrument panel and a central screen for entertainment, navigation and more, delivers a wealth of information to the driver with instant clarity. Two smartphone-like

pads access nearly all of the car’s features directly from the steering wheel. The driver can scroll, swipe and select from the central screen with the right thumb, and the screen between the gauges with the left. An industry-first Energizing Comfort Control system provides climate comfort, fragrance, massage, lighting and music. Enhanced ambient cabin lighting offers a choice of 64 colours in a variety of themes. The new Cascadia truck comes with the option of the Freightliner Driver Loft, which features groundbreaking sleeper design and ergonomics, including a multi-faceted dinette/ work table and opposing seating with safety belts. The seats and dinette can be folded down, and a comfortable Murphy-style bed deploys from the back wall. Additional standard features include aircraftinspired LED ambient lighting and a dimmer switch for personalized light adjustments. The Cascadia is impressive to look at, but the real innovations are under the hood. The Freightliner Cascadia is equipped with Detroit Assurance 4.0, which provides active brake assist, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warnings by utilizing a bumper-mounted radar and a windshield-mounted camera. The Cascadia also is linked to the Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostics service, the same groundbreaking telematics service that is now available to drivers and fleet managers who purchase school buses with the Detroit DD5 or DD8 engines. b Source: Detroit Diesel

New Sealcoating Pumps For Asphalt Trucks From Neal Neal Manufacturing, a division of Blastcrete Equipment Company and a leader in asphalt pavement maintenance equipment, has launched its new Generation IV pumps. The pumps offer improved durability as well as enhanced spraybars and require less frequent routine maintenance than their predecessor, resulting in greater uptime and productivity. Road pavement maintenance contractors also save money since they can retrofit their existing asphalt trucks with the new Neal pumps Gen IV rather than purchase a new truck. “Customers are continually seeking ways to increase productivity, and once again we listened,” said Jim Farrell, Blastcrete CEO. “Our Generation IV pumps not only check all the boxes on our customers’ wish lists, but they also set the bar on aggre-

previous system, more efficient and easier to maintain. The system’s compact filters weigh 98 percent less than the previous filters when full, eliminating the need for a crane during filter changes. Neal also designed the filtration system to give contractors fast and easy access to the filters, making routine cleanings more manageable. Neal installs the system with dual spraybars rather than one. Each spraybar is synchronized with one 100-gpm Generation IV pump. The pumps and spraybars work together to provide optimal efficiency and output on road pavement maintenance projects. Gen IV pumps also offer enough volume for larger orifice tips to all but eliminate tip plugging with aggregates. To ensure its customers know how to properly operate and maintain the machines, Neal offers free training seminars at its Anniston, Alabama, location. All machines are tested under load before being shipped to customers. b

gate load. No other pump handles more aggregates and larger aggregates than the Neal Generation IV pump.” Neal Manufacturing designed the Generation IV pumps with heavyduty features, including robotically welded pump housings and industrialgrade hydraulic cylinders for extreme durability and longevity. These components offer enhanced reliability and last 50 percent longer than parts on the previous model, which means less downtime associated with rebuilds. “Most pumps in this industry last around 30,000 gallons before a rebuild is needed,” Farrell said. “We’ve had our first customer hit 300,000 gallons on our Generation IV pump and it’s still going strong.” The Generation IV pump also comes with Neal’s new filtration system, which is 60 percent more compact than the Source: Neal Mfg

Peterbilt Introduces New Bendix Slack Adjusters And Spring Brakes Peterbilt is pleased to announce the availability of the Bendix Versajust LS slack adjuster and the Bendix Eversure spring brake as factory options. The Bendix Versajust LS is a link-style automatic slack adjuster that can extend lining life by up to 16% and drum life by up to 30%. The Versajust LS is designed to significantly reduce brake maintenance and minimize the risk of dragging brakes. The slack adjuster is covered by a standard 6-year/1.0M mile warranty. The Bendix Eversure spring brake offers the potential for increased payload, better fuel economy and lower cost of operation. The Eversure unit is equipped with one of the lightest chambers on the North American market, saving up to 8 lbs. per tandem axle. The recently enhanced No Touch Power Spring design eliminates coil clash, while an increased power spring shut height reduces stresses on the spring and allows the brake to maintain its force output over time. Gomaco To Feature Its Latest Curb And Gutter Technology Gomaco curb and gutter machines are chosen more than any others due to their industry leading technology, proprietary G+ control system, and ultimate versatility in their product line. Gomaco’s latest curb and gutter technology will be on display at World of Concrete 2018, January 2326, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gomaco’s booth will be located in the Central Hall, C5142, of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Gomaco’s Commander III has gone to the Xtreme and can now slipform a 24 inch (610 mm) radius. The Commander IIIx with G+ control system incorporates rotary sensored slew drives on each of the three tracks, sensored leg positioning, and independent travel circuits to each track to allow tight radius slipforming. Gomaco’s software engineers have developed a new Xtreme radius software bundle to make slipforming a tight radius on

stringline easier than ever before. The operator simply programs the size of the radius into the G+ controller and as the Commander IIIx approaches the radius, the operator activates the radius program, and the paver slipforms around the radius with ease. The track angles, variable track speeds and other aspects of slipforming the radius are all managed by the G+ digital control system. Smart hydraulic cylinders on all three legs of the Commander IIIx allow G+ to know the position of the tracks at all times for intelligent All-Track Positioning. Smart hydraulic cylinders are also used for telescoping the mold mounting system for intelligent offset and repeatable mold offset. The trimmerhead and mold can be independently vertically adjusted for raising and lowering. The Commander IIIx accommodates Tier 4 engines and their cooling

packages. It features an optimized cooling package with G+ controlling the hydraulic fan. G+ quiet technology makes this one of the quietest pavers on the market today while adapting the paver’s cooling needs to job-site conditions. It makes for both quiet and efficient paver operation. Improved fuel efficiency is another advantage with a power-optimized engine and load-sensed hydraulic circuits. G+ and its industryleading technology is the control system for all of Gomaco’s concrete paving equipment, including their curb and gutter machines. Gomaco will have several of their curb and gutter machines on display at World of Concrete 2018, including the Commander IIIx, 3300, GT-3600, and GT-3200. Each of the four Gomaco machines will pave tight-radius curb and gutter, sidewalk, barrier or parapet, and more applications. High-volume concrete placing will be shown with the RTP-500 rubber-tracked placer. The finisher preferred by bridge deck contractors,

the C-450, will be in the booth and set-up to finish a deck 32 feet (9.75 m) wide. Rounding out the Gomaco display will be the four-track GP3 slipform paver featuring two GSI (Gomaco Smoothness Indicators) mounted behind the paving mold. The GSI gives contractors the ability to monitor and trace the real-time smoothness results of the new concrete slab. Gomaco’s team of concrete paving professionals will be in the booth throughout

the show to meet with contractors and discuss their projects and needs for 2018. Gomaco Corporation (www.Gomaco.com) is the worldwide leader in concrete construction equipment with headquarters in Ida Grove, Iowa, USA. Gomaco equipment will slipform concrete streets and highways, airport runways, curb and gutter, sidewalks and recreational trails, safety barrier, bridge parapet, and irrigation canals. Sup-

port equipment includes grade trimmers, concrete placers, concrete placer/ spreaders, and texturing and curing machines. The company also offers equipment to finish flat slabs, bridges, and slopes. Gomaco will consult on unique concrete paving applications and equipment needs.
