Association (TEPPFA), these technical studies that embrace Life Cycle Assessments will be presented at the Chicago conference. They will confirm the low environmental impact of plastic pipe systems compared to nonplastic pipe systems.

The scope and scale of flooding and drought throughout the world have prompted innovative plastic pipe solutions to manage and harvest rainwater under such increasingly unpredictable conditions.

Conference attendees will learn how plastic pipe technology is now being used in Australia to offset extensive flooding. This solution was applied following an overflow of the Morwell River that caused USD 400 million of damage to infrastructure and put the electricity supply to over one million homes in Victoria at risk. Case evidence from China and India will also show how innovative pipe solutions such as trenchless technology are offsetting the worst effects of flooding.

Sustainable Goals As the World Football Cup recently took centre stage, few spectators would’ve been aware that

in 2006, the host nation of Germany employed plastic storm water boxes below the playing field to avoid water logged conditions above. In Chicago, participants will appreciate how these devices are now being widely used in other countries to prevent flooding, land erosion and subsidence as well as harvest precious rainwater for use in times of drought.

Plastic pipe technology is also being used as a sustainable solution to maintaining nationwide utility services in the event of earthquakes and tremors. Evidence from recent events in New Zealand and Japan will underline just how the flexibility of plastic pipe systems can withstand the shocks and how more rigid pipe materials are subject to failure under such conditions.

AECOM Design Partnership Awarded Contract AECOM Technology Corporation (NYSE:ACM), the world’s #1-ranked engineering design firm, recently announced that GrandLinq, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in which it participates, has been awarded a contract by the Region of Waterloo in Ontario.

The GrandLinq PPP will design, build, finance, operate and maintain a new at-grade Light Rail Transit (LRT) system between the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener. The contract is expected to be worth approximately US$23 million to AECOM. As the PPP’s design lead, AECOM is responsible for the project’s detailed design, including track, civil, utilities, architecture, structural, landscape, systems and environmental services.

Known as ION, the LRT system consists of 11 miles of track, 19 stops, 13 traction power stations and a new operations and

maintenance facility to house and service the ION vehicle fleet. A focal point of the project will be the construction of a major grade separation for a future intermodal transit facility. Other notable scope elements include two new rail structures and public infrastructure works.

“We are proud that AECOM will help advance the region’s transit system by providing integrated design management, as well as environmental and community-outreach services,” said Michael S. Burke, AECOM President and Chief Executive Officer. “We look forward to leveraging AECOM’s expertise — working with our partners to deliver a convenient and environmentally friendly transportation option to residents.”

Built Green Canada Launches Challenge Coinciding with National Environment Week, Built Green Canada issued a challenge to municipalities across the country to encourage green building as part of their sustainability building policies.

Municipalities incenting sustainable building with a program like BUILT GREEN reduce the load on civic infrastructure such as water, electrical, waste, and so forth. These savings can offset a rebate or incentive and may provide a competitive edge from one municipality to another. Moreover, incentives may encourage builders to develop in a particular community and with more builders in a community, revenue for permits and ongoing property taxes increases.

Built Green Canada recognizes municipalities may not be able to favour one green building program over another and, therefore, encourages municipalities to include BUILT

GREEN programs as an option to endorse. The collective efforts of government, builders, developers, homeowners, and others focused on sustainable residential construction make a difference to environmental conservation, and ultimately leave more for future generations.

This year’s National Environment Week theme, “Strengthening Our Environment Today for Tomorrow,” and the Government of Canada’s action to preserve and enhance the natural environment through science, such as maintaining air and water quality, is well suited to Built Green Canada.

“While energy efficiency is a fundamental component of our programs, integrating the EnerGuide label through Natural Resources Canada, we go beyond energy efficiency, moving the industry toward a more holistic approach to sustainable building practices,” said

An auto cruise control system reduces operator fatigue by maintaining a fixed speed when driving distances. Demo To Development After more than a decade of thoughtful planning, a 138-year-old health care legacy comes to an end with the demolition of South Street Hospital in London, Ontario. By Mark Wolfe

T

he demo is part of the largest hospital restructuring project in the city’s history, and is one of the largest demo projects currently underway.

Demolition work began in early 2014, and is expected to be completed by January 2015. The demolition contract is valued at $9.2 million, and is jointly funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, London Health Sciences Centre, and the City of London. The hospital has engaged a number of companies to oversee the

work, with ProGreen Demolition Ltd. taking the lead on demolishing the site.

The municipality still owns much of the land, and the remaining acreage owned by the hospital will be transferred back to the city after the decommissioning is complete.

“We want to be respectful of the neighbourhood, and leave the site as it was given to us,” says Dipesh Patel, Vice President of Facilities Management at London Health Sciences

Centre. “It’s going to look like park land when we turn it over to the city.”

No decisions have been made regarding the ultimate use of the site once demolition is complete.

However, early municipal redevelopment plans include a mix of residential and commercial buildings on the attractive piece of land situated next to the Thames River.

removal of various other structures in three phases.

The equipment centerpiece is the 167-foot Liebherr 984 high reach excavator, one of the tallest machines of its kind in North America (equivalent in height to a 16-storey building), and more than one-and-a-half times the size of the tallest structure on the site.

“Each project is unique and requires a customized plan to be developed to ensure we successfully com-

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · www.supplypost.com plete the project safely, on time and on budget,” says Paolo Provenzano, President of ProGreen Demolition Ltd. “Our challenge on every project is to ensure we stick to our schedule while ensuring all the work is completed safely and on budget.”

The buildings, totaling 500,000 square feet of space, are being razed on the six-acre site with machines equipped with hydraulic shears, and there will be no implosions, ex-

plosions, or wrecking balls used at any time. Trucks are employed to haul the material off site, and are restricted to pre-defined routes. This strategy will minimize disturbances and dust for the residents who live near the project.

Trees Ontario’s Annual Community Planting Weekend On May 3rd, Trees Ontario, along with volunteers, community members and planting partners, dug, stomped and planted thousands of seedlings in nine separate communities across Ontario during a series of half-day tree planting events.

Now in its sixth year, the annual Community Planting Weekend was hosted

by Trees Ontario and supporters CAA South Central Ontario, CAA North & East Ontario, Enbridge Gas Distribution, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Ontario Wood.

In total, the day drew together more than 1,000 attendees and resulted in a total of nearly 5,000 new, native trees planted! Planting sites included London, Windsor, Ottawa, Niagara, Midhurst, Kingston, Kitchener/Waterloo, Peterborough and York Region.

CASE 885B AWD Motor Grader Proves Its Mettle In Big Sky Country As Road Supervisor for Toole County, Mont., Lloyd Omdahl understands the importance of power and versatility in his equipment. With nearly 2,000 square miles of land— about the size of Delaware—and just over 5,200 residents, it’s a county that needs to make the most of its equipment purchases.

When the county needed a new Motor Grader last year, Omdahl decided to give the CASE 885B AWD (all-wheel drive) a try.

“It was the middle of winter,” Omdahl recalls.

“We were impressed with

our initial test, so the first day we had the machine we put it on a road job with our other three machines and it outworked every grader we had out there.”

The geography of the county often requires the road crew to come up with creative ways to get the job done with the equipment on hand. Currently, Toole County is using their CASE motor grader for grading and rebuilding roads, ditching, snow removal, bulldozing and more. The all-wheel drive design helps improve tractive performance, steering and side

draft control in challenging conditions, including snow, mud and sand.

“You name it,” Ohmdahl said. “We’ve used it for just about everything we do.”

On a recent project, the county needed to build a road across alkali flats. “We brought out these boulders that were about three feet in diameter and we used its dozer blade to push them into the flats so we could build a road across it.

Then, since we didn’t have the crawler along to push the scraper, we just used the motor grader to push it

and it turned out great.”

Omdahl said he was particularly impressed with the power of the machine and the productivity he was able to achieve.

“The power to weight ratio and gearing is great,” Omdahl said, “and that translates to more productivity. Head to head, it moves more dirt than our other graders. It just buries our other machines.”

One of the reasons the 885B AWD was able to exceed Omdahl’s expectations is the redesigned multiradius involute moldboard, which cuts, mixes and rolls material more efficiently than a constant-radius unit.

“The new moldboard design has a sharper angle on the bottom instead of the same radius throughout,” Omdahl noted, “and that really cuts the dirt, pulls it up and rolls it much faster than we’re used to.”

In addition to significant increases in productivity, the improved cutting and turning power of the moldboard design also provides Omdahl with better fuel efficiency.

Additional features that Omdahl found useful are the front articulation and

all-wheel drive. He said the all-wheel drive is particularly useful for keeping the front-end stable in ditching jobs. The front articulation, he said, was a departure from the rear articulating machines he was used to, but that he quickly warmed

“The front articulation took a little getting used to,” he said, “but once we got used to it, we found that it gives us a better turn radius and when we’re ditching we use it quite a bit to offset the front end.” b

5-Star Power Shines At Hôtel Shediac With Sommers Generator System

The newest full service hotel with meeting rooms in south-east New Brunswick is shooting for the stars, and General Manager Michelle Boudreau is taking no chances on earning a 5-star rating for her facility.

Thanks to a custombuilt standby generator, Hôtel Shediac is now the only full service hotel that can offer assured power to maintain its complete range of quality guest services through any power outage.

“As a coastal town, we are well aware of the potential for power outages,” Boudreau says. “High winds and lightning strikes in the summer can black out the power for a fourblock area here. And this winter, we have seen ice storms take out the power, too.”

Boudreau explains that the principal owners of the hotel also own other properties in the region, and are accustomed to installing a standby generator to maintain essential powers. For their new hotel, though, they took the plans a step further.

“Most hotels have backup power only for their property management system: for the computers that manage hotel finances, reservations, and such. But we wanted standby power to maintain 100% service capability.”
