Band Of Brothers On The Bayou The Martinez brothers continue their father’s proud legacy.

About an hour’s drive south of Shreveport, Zwolle is the unofficial capital of Louisiana logging.

“Our area is synonymous with logging,” says Jeffrey Martinez. “A lot of good logging families call Zwolle home. You know how they say the S.E.C. [Southeastern Conference] is the best conference in college football? I believe we have the best group of loggers in the South.”

A famous sports figure once said that it ain’t bragging if you can back it up.

And the Martinez family can back it up. Jeffrey’s father, A.T. Martinez, was the first recipient of the Louisiana Outstanding Logger Award in 1987.

His three sons have won the award, too: Mark, owner of Timber-Mark Inc. in Noble, in 2009; Jeffrey, owner of TJM Inc. in Zwolle, in 2012; and Kevin, owner of K L M Logging Inc. in Noble, in 2016.

Not that the Martinez brothers are ones to brag.

Jeffrey is very humble about the award, which is presented by the Louisiana Logging Council in recognition of best practices for job quality and safety.

“The year after I won, I judged the following year’s nominees and was very impressed by the winner.

I would have finished second that year for sure.”

Jeffrey and his brothers could not have achieved the success they have had without the support of their father, who passed away in 2010. “He always set a good example for us,” says Kevin. “He did whatever it took to make it, working from dawn to dark, or past dark.”

“I wish other people could have had the opportunity to work with him,” says Jeffrey. “We always hear from past acquaintances and employees about the advice he gave them and his personal touch. And we owe a lot to our mother, too. Any successful businessperson must have people behind them, and she also set a great example. Our parents

instilled in us the values that we needed to become successful.”

Jeffrey’s mother couldn’t be prouder. “I think my boys are the best,” says Nanette. “Then again, they had a really good teacher. I know A.T. expected the best.”

Louisiana Logger’s Legacy A.T. Martinez drove a truck for his father’s logging operation in the late 1960s. “Back then everything was hand-felled, and they used tractors to skid logs and forklifts to load trailers,” recalls Jeffrey. “My grandfather was a pole expert. He used to love to mark transmission poles ahead of the logging crews, something the Martinez crews like to do today.”

In 1972, A.T. started his own logging company, Martinez Brothers, with his brother, G.J. “He began taking us out to the woods at a young age,” recalls Kevin. “My first jobs were to clean and grease the log trucks and to fix flats. Later I learned to stack logs with the log loader. We literally grew up in the woods.”

A.T. taught his boys the importance of hard work and self-reliance.

“He taught us to do things like maintenance ourselves instead of depending on other people,” remembers Mark. “That was the best route because you have a lot fewer headaches. We learned to put in long hours and be very hands-on.”

In 1980, A.T. went into business with his sons, Jeffrey and Mark, after they graduated from high school. “When I got out of high school, I was ready to go,” says Mark. “I never had any doubts this is what I wanted to do. My family works in the woods — it’s in our blood.” Kevin joined his dad and brothers in 1984. “I started driving skidder for my dad the day after I graduated,” he says.

In the late ‘80s, the three sons branched off into their own operations with the backing of their father.

“Dad helped Mark get a John Deere feller buncher, and he helped Kevin and I get our own Deere skid-

April 2018 ders,” recalls Jeffrey. “He told our local Deere dealer, “I stand behind these guys.

I offer no money down — just my good name and assurance that they will pay you.” That bought us enough time to earn money for a down payment.”

“I’ve been passionate about running a cutter since Dad got one in 1981,” adds Mark. “I just love cutting. To this day, it’s what I spend 90 percent of my time doing.”

Although separate entities, the companies often worked together on the same operation, cutting the stumpage A.T. bought.

“Timber buying is where my dad really made his mark,” says Jeffrey. “He always had enough timber to keep us busy. He stopped buying timber in 2008. But because of the training we got from him in terms of merchandising and maximizing the value of timber, we were able to align ourselves with other customers.”

Over the years the three companies grew more independent, though they still have opportunities to work together once in a while.

Jeffrey and Kevin both began contracting with Walsh Timber Company in 1998.

They mostly clear-cut pine and hardwood for pulp, lumber, plywood, and ties.

“We actually had an opportunity to log the same tract last year,” says Jeffrey. “It was enjoyable — a throwback to the old days when we were logging for Dad. But we still help each other all the time. If one of us is shorthanded or someone is taking a vacation, we’ll move employees or equipment around to fill the void. And at family gettogethers, we always pick each other’s brains. That’s one thing that Dad said before he passed — how proud he was just seeing his sons get along.”

“We have a close family,” adds Kevin. “We work together. That’s what my father instilled in us — to help each other. And that’s something I will remember forever — when all of us boys were working together for my dad.”

Keeping The Wheels Rolling A.T. was a John Deere man since day one. His first skidder was a Deere 640A Cable Skidder. Mark recalls running a Deere 440C Skidder when he was in Continued on page 7

high school. Both had open cabs.

Today the three brothers, along with Mark’s son, Stephen, run John Deere L-Series Skidders. Stephen began working for his dad when he was about 20 years old. Unlike his dad, he really took to running a skidder. “That’s what I started on, and I never wanted to get off. You can really see everything that’s happening on the job, which helps me manage what’s going on.”

Today’s machines are more comfortable and user friendly. “I love the joystick controls,” says Stephen. “They’re a lot smoother and more responsive. The cab is a lot more spacious than past models, and with the rotating seat, you’re not straining your neck as much. At the end of the day you feel the same as when you got into the machine. You are not feeling beat down.”

Stephen believes the latest skidders are more productive and reliable than ever. “They’re so powerful.

It hardly feels like anything is behind you when you make a drag. And they’re stout. I’ve had the skidder for over a year and haven’t had to do anything aside from regular maintenance.

Uptime means more than anything to me.”

“As my son or any of my brothers will tell you, it’s all about getting things done in a timely manner,” says Mark. “John Deere machines are productive and reliable, but the product support we receive from our local dealer, Doggett, is what really sets Deere apart. Whether it’s keeping us on top of regu-

lar maintenance or providing the parts we need, they help keep the wheels rolling.”

Stephen and Kevin also run 843L Feller Bunchers.

“They’re very comfortable and productive,” says Kevin. “I’ve never seen hydraulics work this fast.

That makes a world of difference in the hilly terrain we work in. And all L-Series machines are so easy to work on. Everything is wide open and easy to get to.”

Over the years, the Martinez family has tried other brands but have remained extremely loyal to John Deere. “It’s hard to change when we’ve had such good luck with them over the years,” says Mark. “Like Dad, we believe in John Deere.”

Stephen was too young to know his grandfather, A.T. But his father, Mark, taught him the same lessons about hard work that A.T. taught his three sons.

“The biggest thing Dad told me is just to work hard and to treat people right,” says Stephen. “If anyone needs help, give them a hand.”

Mark lent a hand when his son went on his own to form Timbersam LLC

in Shreveport four years ago, after he had worked for his dad for eight years.

“He supported me 100 percent,” Stephen recalls. “I already had a skidder, so I rented a feller buncher from him and bought my own loader. But the best assets he gave me were his two best employees. I’ve really learned a lot from them.”

All of Stephen’s employees are over 50 years old.

“I’m in my early 30s, and it’s getting tough to find anyone my age or younger to work in the woods anymore. Most want to work in the oil fields. I hope that changes, because someday I’ll need someone. Maybe I’ll have to wait for my two

boys to grow up (laughs).”

Despite the difficulty of finding future loggers, the Martinezes are cautiously optimistic about logging’s future. “If you are willing to put in the time and be hands-on, you can make a good living,” says Mark.

“But you have to be dedicated. It’s a hard living, but it’s an honest one. I’m really proud to provide for my family and of the reputation that the Martinez name has established.” b Source: John Deere

Matching New Production Capability With Sennebogen 830 M-T Log Loader The re-opening of the sawmill in White River, Ontario, was one of the lumber industries rare “good news” stories of 2013. Shuttered six years earlier, the town’s population had dwindled to nearly half its size from the 1990s. Then numbering about 600 residents, the Township of White River and the nearby Pic Mobert First Nation joined forces to create White River Forest Products LP (WRFP).

Led by CEO Frank Dottori, the renowned founder of Canadian forestry giant Tembec, the new venture

invested heavily in restoring the site and creating a new model of efficiency in Ontario’s north.

The centerpiece of the new mill is the new saw line and the infeed deck with the new debarker.

Equipped with 14 scanners to achieve dramatic improvements in the mill’s yield from every tree, the new saw line can out-produce all three of White River’s previous lines put together. The next challenge was to match that efficiency in the yard’s loading capability. For that task, WRFP has turned to Sen-

nebogen 830 M-T purposebuilt material handlers.

Robert Acs, the Yard Manager at WRFP, recalls the effort to move wood as fast as the saw can process it. “We acquired some older equipment with the assets we purchased. We tried upgrading to another material handler but it only lasted six months. We could see it wasn’t working out.”

Getting up to speed In the meantime, the yard contracted out a loading by-the-hour service with Dan Bolduc of DKR Trucking. Bolduc was op-

erating an 830 M-T, specially designed by Sennebogen to pull a large trailer.

The 830 took on the yard’s full range of loading duties: offloading trucks, stockpiling the wood, forwarding logs to the mill on a trailer and loading the infeed from the trailer.

With a front row view of how Bolduc’s machine did it all, Dottori and the WRFP board soon approved the purchase of another unit from Strongco, the Sennebogen distributor located in Sudbury, Ontario.

Strongco’s Danny Virgoe explained how the 830 M-T adds to the success of the mill. “White River, located in North Ontario deals with cold and harsh weather conditions. “Uptime is critical!” Acs agrees. “It’s a full day for the bus to deliver in-stock parts from the Strongco branch in Thunder Bay. A week is pretty good if we need anything from the factory. But these are low maintenance machines.

They work 20 hours a day, 5 days a week. We’ve put 13,000 hours on our machine in two and a half years; Dan has 17,000 hours on his 830 – but we haven’t had any major downtime with the machine!”

On the move Surviving the cold of White River winters is just one of the challenges to the Sennebogen machines.

Wicked freeze and thaw cycles in the spring leave the yard in a slippery, boggy condition: tough sledding when you’re pulling a big load. Forwarding from the stockpiles to the deck can be a trip of up to 700 yards. The undercarriage’s higher clearance is uniquely designed for the job, with dual transmissions to drive each axle and with a frame specially reinforced against pulling stresses.

Sennebogen’s elevating Maxcab provides operators with the visibility to keep the site safe while unloading and stacking. The cab’s sliding door and catwalk allows safe entry and exit, especially when the yard is filled with snow and ice.

Acs notes that the high lift of the material handler further reduces any potential delays in forwarding cycles. “We can stack more wood closer to the mill, so that saves travel time.”

With the upgraded saw line, White River can produce up to 40,000 board feet per hour. Processing black spruce and jack pine logs from 4” to 20” in diameter, its chip volume has

been reduced by half. The mill now yields more lumber from each tree. At full capacity, it targets 150 million board feet of FSC-certified products, with about 70% in 16’ lengths of 2 X 4 and 2 X 6.

The return of the mill has led to a rapid resurgence of the town. With 160 employees at the mill, White River is seeing the return of experienced workers like Robert Acs. The town’s population has risen again to more than 1000, and its most pressing problem these days is housing its new residents.

Construction Workforce Pressures Increase Across Canada As Activity Levels Off Canada’s construction industry must remain focused on recruitment and retention as more than one quarter of a million construction workers are expected to retire this decade, according to the latest labour market forecast released today by BuildForce Canada.

While slow and uneven construction job growth is anticipated this decade as construction activity levels off, the notable provincial exceptions are BC’s Lower Mainland and Ontario’s Central and Eastern regions, where rising project demands have outpaced the available local workforce.

“Despite slower employment growth in most provinces, recruitment pressures will intensify with the estimated retirement of up to 21 percent of Canada’s construction workforce this decade,” said Bill Ferreira, Executive Director of BuildForce Canada. “Simply put, the industry must remain fo-

cused on recruitment, training, and mentoring efforts to prevent a potential skills and capacity gap over the next 10 years.”

Among the early adopters bucking the trend is John Bird, Managing Director of Yarrows Aggregates. He was one of the first in the UK to start using Volvo Construction Equipment’s On-Board Weighing system and has recently set up drone technology to assess his 125acre site. Every month, a drone flies over a predetermined route and automatically captures measurements of volume, pile count and tonnage within just a few hours.

He said: “I’m always willing to invest in new ways to work more efficiently and drone technology like this allows me to access data far more quickly and accurately than I would ever be able to gather manually. We move a lot of material, so it’s vital I see an up to date record of what’s currently available so that I can plan and respond before we run out of any product.

Automation firm Doxel has developed a system where robots visually monitor every aspect of labor productivity and then use algorithms to relay progress in terms of timings, budgets and project’s targets. The company says it can increase productivity by 38%, but whether humans will welcome this robotic advice is open to question.

Advances In Workforce Management New techniques are now available that promise to make the most out of construction workers’ individual behaviors and routines. In the UK, the academic Dr. Laura Florez has devised a productivity-busting algorithm that works out where best to place workers on site dependent on their personalities and skillsets. The academic’s system means that even with a diverse and everchanging workforce on site, the time-consuming

task of manually monitoring staff and site dynamics can be worked out more speedily.

Better training and increased investment will also provide a productivity boost. The UK government has recently pledged to invest an extra £64 million into digital and construction skills.

But even if training is given a boost, how can companies keep workers from leaving for more lucrative job roles? According to the ADP Research Institute, construction wages increased by just 2.3% across the industry in the USA last year, well below the national average. This is due in part to the fact that any increase in wages will eat into a project’s already stretched financials.

Electrifying Opportunity For The Automotive Industry The automotive industry is facing a transition, where electric vehicles are predicted to take a major market share. “It will definitely happen, but not overnight,” says Sandvik’s Eduardo Debone, who argues that the rise of electric and, more importantly, hybrid technology represents a huge opportunity for sup-

pliers to the automotive industry.

count for 16 percent of car sales by 2030, and would become market leading with up to a 69 percent share by 2050.

This growth will primarily be driven by government legislation, with more countries incentivizing the use of future technologies such as electric vehicles. These moves have become more widespread since the 2015 Paris Agreement, which seeks to “pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.”

Clear statement of intent In 2016, the German Bundesrat (Federal Council) passed a resolution to ban new gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles from EU roads, starting in 2030.

Only zero-emission vehicles would be allowed on the market after that time.

The resolution is a clear statement of intent, even though it is non-binding and subject to approval by the European Council.

In July 2017, Emmanuel Macron’s new French government announced its own plans to ban all gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in line with the Paris Agreement. The French

statement came the day after Volvo announced that it would make only fully electric or hybrid cars from 2019 onwards.

In the meantime, governments of countries ranging from China, India and Japan, to the Netherlands and Norway, have announced similar plans.

For suppliers to the conventional automotive industry, such as Sandvik, this trend would decrease the demand for products and services connected to internal combustion engines (ICEs).

However, Eduardo Debone, Automotive Business Segment Manager at product area Sandvik Coromant, says this outlook could in fact be positive.

Every week I meet people who ask if electric cars are a threat to our businesses, and I reply that in the short to medium term these new platforms actually represent an opportunity for Sandvik,” he comments.

Sandvik is carrying out an indepth analysis of the effects of electrification, and the findings confirm that electrification will create significant new opportunities in the coming

years. “Right now, there’s lower-hanging fruit in the form of the hybrid vehicles, which have huge potential to deliver CO2savings without requiring a total paradigm shift in terms of technology and infrastructure,” Debone says.

Although electric vehicles are undoubtedly on the rise, some obstacles still need to be overcome before traditional cars have been outmaneuvered. Price is still a concern for many consumers, they take time to charge – around 30 minutes – and the drive range varies. Also, today’s power grid lacks the capacity to support a mass market for electric cars.

“Norway is one of the most developed markets in the world for electric vehicles, and with a stable power grid supporting only 5 million inhabitants it makes sense,” says Debone. “In cities like São Paulo or New Delhi, both with some 20 million people in the metropolitan area, where the power grids are barely able to support the day-to-day needs of their populations, it’s a different challenge.”

For the next five to ten years, Debone believes that the growing trend of hybrid cars will enable automotive suppliers to continue to deliver the parts, technologies and components they currently make, in addition to some new ones. “Hybrids require the same components as ICE vehicles, plus some new parts to support the hybrid technology,” he says.

As for Sandvik, an electrified future is a bright future.

“When pure electric cars do become reality on a larger scale, we will have a mature offering for many areas, such as digital manufacturing, additive manufacturing and others,” Debone says.

For now, we still don’t have a unique alternative to fossil fuels “Ultimately, I think the long-term solution may include fuel cell technologies, as a complement to batteries and internal combustion engines,” he says.

The Starship Initiative Shell and AirFlow Truck Company Debut Energy-Efficient Class 8 Truck

The body of the Starship Project tractor is a bespoke aerodynamic design made of carbon fiber. This includes the side skirts, hood, and front end. A custom, Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved wrap-around windshield was designed specifically for the truck. The trailer includes energy efficient features such as full side skirts to reduce drag and a 5,000watt solar array on top of the trailer to power interior accessories and reduce the energy load.

The Starship initiative provides Shell with an opportunity to test Shell Rotella® T6 Ultra 5W-30 in a cutting-edge vehicle prior to its introduction to market. Shell will be able to gain valuable information for creating lower viscosity engine oils without sacrificing performance.

The truck will use a number of full synthetic Shell Lubricants products including Spirax S6 GXME 75W-80 transmission oil, Spirax S5 ADE 75W-80 differential oil and Spirax S6 GME 40 wheel hub oil. In addition, Shell Rotella Extended Life Coolant will provide excellent hightemperature protection and heat transfer. Shell Rotella Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a high purity diesel exhaust fluid, will also be in the truck.

Starship Project Testing The Starship Project will undertake a cross-country run in May that will begin in California and end in Florida carrying a real load of cargo: clean reef material destined for a new reef installation off the coast of Florida later this summer.

AirFlow and Shell will seek to reduce the energy usage associated with the transportation of goods through improved fuel-economy for a Class 8 truck and the measurement of freight ton efficiency.

“For more than 30 years, Shell has employed co-engineering to increase efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Mainwaring. “The relationship with AirFlow Truck Company and other suppliers to build the Starship Project is part of a collaborative process led by Shell that encourages co-engineering and has resulted in a Class 8 truck that will be used to challenge how

trucking efficiency is defined.”

Obtaining significant fuel economy improvements in Class 8 trucks and trailers is a challenging process given the size and construction of a tractor and trailer. Shell recognizes that a holistic approach to making advances is important. Advances in engine and drive train technology, the use of low viscosity synthetic lubricants, aerodynamic designs, and efficient driving methods all contribute to increased fuel economy and freight ton efficiency.

AirFlow Truck Company AirFlow Truck Company has built two previous aerodynamic and fuel-efficient Class 8 tractor trailers, the first in 1983 and the most recent in 2012.
