Construction Industry’s Stance On Canada’s Road Infrastructure

Canada’s construction industry is demanding clarity from the Prime Minister on future investment in new road infrastructure after comments made in early February by Environment Minister

Steven Guilbeault.

While Guilbeault explained that support to provinces for maintenance will continue, existing road infrastructure, “is perfectly adequate to respond to the needs we have.”

Canadians are dealing with an acute housing crisis. The government is asking the construction industry to build 5.8 million new homes, but is overlooking the investment needed to support these homes and communities.

of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) estimates that it will require $107,000 in public investments per new housing unit. This amounts to a total of $620 billion in public funding needed – an additional $375 billion beyond the current planned budget.

“These new communities need new roads. People need to be connected to their jobs, their schools, and their hospitals,” says Mary Van Buren, President of the Canadian Construction Association.

“A growing population has growing demands. We not only need the road networks to support their movement; we also need to shore up our trade infrastructure, which includes roads, bridges and highways.”

Canada has been underinvesting in trade-enabling infrastructure for 15 years, as evidenced by the drop from 10th to 32nd in terms of the World Economic Forum’s global trade infrastructure ranking. Without continued investment in critical infrastructure, as recommended by the National Supply Chain Task Force, including tradeenabling infrastructure, Canada will fail to harness trade with its international partners for its economic success.

Industry needs the federal government to partner with industry and work with municipal and provincial governments to build a strong foundation for a stronger Canada.

Ontario-Made Hydrogen Power Generator Put To The Test

New hydrogen power generator offers zero emissions, mobility and quiet running at a costeffective rate to meet exacting needs of film production.

A can-do attitude and decades of experience in power generators is putting a Stratford, Ontario company at the forefront of hydrogen power. Sommers Generator Systems is piloting a project to supply industry with emissions-free hydrogen power equipment.

The HGDWS 165 ST generator looks and performs like a conventional diesel generator. But it delivers a quiet, mobile, zeroemission, and serviceable system.

Chris McGregor, President, said the company was approached two years ago by H2OnSet, a company that enables film and TV production sets to be fed with hydrogen from local producers, using uniquely designed over-the-road trailers. H2OnSet integrates hydrogen production, distribution and use into a holistic turnkey service. They asked Sommers if they would be interested in building a hydrogen powered generator initially for

use on TV and film sets. At that time, there was interest, but no marketable products. Some of the challenges for hydrogen fuel cells included cost of equipment, the need for peripheral devices and the unknown performance of operating the equipment. McGregor thought they could overcome those. “We said, ‘Sure, we can do this.’” Sommers Engineering team led by Frank Noda have designed a generator using fuel cells, although there was interest and still is, the cost

was a factor. It was about 10 times the price of a comparable diesel system. As chance would have it, an introduction to a European based manufacturer of diesel and gasoline engines and hydrogen drive solutions. This led to the opportunity to simplify the process, reduce costs and test efficiencies.

The result was a 60 Hz 120/208V 165kWe hydrogen generator classified as zero emissions and a smaller footprint. “Earlier hydrogen generators were bulky, unconventional looking,” said McGregor. “What we’re building today looks almost identical to what our other generators look like but with almost zero emissions.” Sommers will work closely with the engine manufacturer to provide feedback and operational data for future builds for a wide cross section of industries looking for opportunities to reduce their carbon footprint.

Both aspects appealed to the film industry that wants a mobile unit on a trailer with easy distribution for fuel, quiet running,

while significantly reducing any environmental harm.

This included SAG-AFTRA members who want the opportunity to work in environmentally friendly sites.

“They are in a quest to produce movies without carbon impact,” said McGregor. This has great appeal for studios that have made public pledges to decarbonize. Members of the Sustainable Production Alliance (SPA), a consortium of Hollywood Studios and Streamers that are seeking more environmentally friendly practices.

According to McGregor, this is just the beginning. “These units can be used and paralleled to produce as much

clean energy required for any application whether it be standby or prime power.”

Although production will begin in the March-April timeframe, McGregor has already begun fielding inquiries from several industries and applications from across the continent.

McGregor said the generator will have a big environmental impact on communities. “The future needs new ways of power generation. Hydrogen has been around for years. Today, it is as safe as any other. We are building these systems.” SP

Opportunities And Challenges Facing Women In Construction

There are more women in construction occupations today than ever before.

5 Tips For Spring Street Sweeping

The new survey’s reports are streamlined with more modern visualization of the data. They measure five safety activities – hazard identification, event learning, inspections, near miss and safety meetings – and address 11 cultural indicators, including caring climate, employee involvement, feedback, management credibility, training effectiveness and risk reduction. Importantly, they also show how safety is perceived differently among employees, supervisors and managers.

Human and organizational performance is a framework concept for talking about safety and creating a resilient safety culture. It’s a mindset that allows organizations to build more errortolerant systems by teaching leaders that expecting perfection from workers, processes, or procedures is not realistic.

Traditional methods of managing safety systems center around designing policies, standard work and processes assuming work happens in a straight line. Management sets the expectations, tells workers what to do and the workers do it the same way, every day.

Precision Utilities Utilizes Hydro-Excavation For Emergency Utility Work

When it comes to emergency work for utilities, urgency is essential.

“For that emergency work, it’s ‘we need you here now or needed you here yesterday,’” said Dan Lipe, coowner of Precision Utilities in Mayer, Minnesota.

It was those types of pressing needs that went into Precision Utilities’ decision to get a vacuum excavator — in particular the TRUVAC HXX.

Precision Utilities is a fairly new company that began in 2020 right before

the pandemic hit. Lipe and his friend Cory Efraimson decided to combine their respective lengthy experience to strike out on their own. Efraimson is a master plumber with certifications for gas work as well while Lipe came from the water, sewer and excavation side. Since its start, the business has been steadily growing. What began as residential work has now transformed into city con-

tracts, municipality work and commercial buildings.

Part of that growth was emergency utility work. While Precision Utilities used to rely on subcontractors, that process was too slow. With their own TRUVAC HXX hydro excavation truck, the team was able to respond quickly, which their customers appreciated.

“Now, it’s a matter of turning the key and going,” said Lipe. “Our customers are very

pleased that we’re not waiting on subcontractors.”

“Digging around gas lines or power lines could without a doubt kill someone, cause serious injury or cause a career-ending injury. “The features on the TRUVAC are great,” said Lipe. “We looked at various trucks, and what it comes down to is service. That’s number one because everything that has moving parts is going to break. You end up going with who has the best service because the second a machine breaks down, you’re losing money. We would absolutely choose TRUVAC again.”

Volvo CE & Mack Trucks Partner For Electrification Project

Volvo Construction Equipment and Mack Trucks, both Volvo Group companies, recently delivered on- and off-road electric equipment to Florida-based Coastal Waste & Recycling to help the company achieve its sustainability goals.

Coastal Waste & Recycling celebrated the event with representatives of the two OEMs and local officials at their facility in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Coastal Waste & Recycling, based in Boca Raton, Florida, is piloting a 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator from Volvo CE and took delivery of a Mack LR Electric Class 8 refuse vehicle that will operate in residen-

tial and certain specialized commercial applications in southern Florida. The excavator will work at a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

“We are excited to add both pieces of equipment to our fleet,” said Brendon Pantano, CEO of Coastal Waste & Recycling.” As the first private hauler in Florida to invest in electric, we look forward to harnessing the strength of this strategic move to further elevate innovation in our operations.”

Both fully electric machines represent the latest evolution of electrifying larger vehicles and building a mixed fleet to suit the company and application. The EC230 Electric is a medium-sized excavator designed to offer the same performance as its diesel counterpart, while the LR Electric is a heavy-duty truck with all the strength of comparable diesel-powered Mack LR refuse models.

“The shift to off-road electrification, especially in heavy construction machines, can’t be accomplished by one single team or company,” said Scott

Volvo EC230 Electric is being tested is north of Miami, where Coastal receives and sorts recyclable materials. The EC230 Electric is performing the same work as its equivalent diesel model the EC220EL, feeding material into a sorting line.

“Coastal Waste & Recycling has been a great partner and has always been interested in any new technology they can incorporate to drive efficiency and excellence throughout their operations,” said Martin Mattsson, director of Key Account Sales – Waste and Recycling, Volvo CE. “Testing this electric excavator directly against its conventional equivalent will teach us a lot.”

The big difference be-

tween the electric and diesel excavators is zero emissions, but also its significantly lower noise and vibration levels. Operators can feel instant torque from the electric motor instead of the slight delay with diesel.

The EC230 Electric is estimated to achieve a 60% to 70% reduction in energy running costs compared with the EC220. Not having an engine also greatly simplifies maintenance.

The EC230 Electric and the Mack LR Electric will be fast-charged with the same mobile Heliox 50 kW charger provided by Volvo CE. Volvo CE and Mack experts consulted with Coastal Waste on charging to help identify the ideal solution.

When it comes to remote control of the BMP 8500, BOMAG once again opts for true radio operation due to its proven superior stability over infrared systems.

If the remote control unit goes missing, a new one can

The charger can even be integrated into the trench roller’s storage compartment.

Edmonton CCUS Project Update

Heidelberg Materials North America has announced a significant milestone in its two-stage competitive procurement process as it works to select the capture technology and contractor for providing the CO2 separation solution for its Edmonton, Alberta, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Project.

This ground-breaking project will be the first fullscale application of CCUS in the cement sector.

As part of this process, Technip Energies, a worldleading engineering and technology player for the energy transition, has been selected as one of the partners for this effort and has been awarded

a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for the carbon capture technology for the Edmonton CCUS project. Powered by the Shell CANSOLV® CO2 capture system, the Technip Energies solution which will be the basis of the FEED study, offers cutting-edge performance based on regenerable amine technology.

Grinding Adversity Into Opportunity

It all began 35 years ago when Craig Kergen dared to suggest improvements to the materials handling dealership he worked for, only to be met with the condescending “mind his own business.”

Taking this criticism as advice, Craig reached out to Pascal McCloskey, founder of McCloskey Equipment in Peterborough, ON, and within hours, a dealership agreement was signed.

Starting from scratch in 1995, Craig’s work ethic, honed on a mixed grain farm and a decade in the oil fields, became the cornerstone of Tyalta’s success. “I wanted to do things other companies wouldn’t let me do. So, I am doing this on purpose, and that’s been the case for the past 35 years,” says Kergen.

The initial recommendation of minding his own business led to the establishment of Tyalta Industries as the largest McCloskey Dealer in the world, and becoming the leading rental and sales dealer of aggregate equipment in Western Canada.

Overnight Success

Tyalta began in Airdrie in 1995, and moved to Crossfield two years later, rent-

“Always listen to your customers,” and if they aren’t saying much, “ask them questions,” shares Terry Peters, General Manager. Customers’ experiences, perspectives, and opinions form the bedrock of business and industry success. If customers discover inventive reuses for standard equipment, it signals a need for specialized equipment to address that facet of their work.

Come Hell or High Water — or Recession

The financial downturn and global recession seemed like the worst time to be building on a new lot and expanding his business, but Craig knew that hard work had never failed him, so he once

again put his shoulder into it and expanded his building, lot and business.

Tyalta opened their new building with four bay shop in 2009. This set up is now busting at the seams, so six more bays are in the design phase, with build completion expected in 2026.

Tyalta applies this same work ethic to supporting the community in times of crisis. In 2013, amid rising waters in the Bow and Elbow Rivers, Tyalta swiftly dispatched equipment to Canmore and High River, stabilizing riverbanks and mitigating flooding into Calgary and High River. Facing a mere 15-day window before the Stampede, Tyalta deployed three specialized machines, working alongside hundreds of workers to remedi-

For example, DEF systems are notoriously sensitive in colder weather and resetting the sensor to get machines back working adds in undesirable downtime and inefficiency.

“In contrast with other larger dealerships, we’re the jetski, and they’re a yacht.” This includes being very clear on business goals, and staying ahead of the curve.

The environmental wins that DEF provides in warmer climates like California, are negligible in Canada, due to the overextended project timelines and additional machines needed to continually service the working equipment.

No Rock Unturned

Over the years, Tyalta has expanded its offerings through relationships with additional manufacturers, such as MDS and Diamond Z, ensuring a comprehensive range of material handling equipment. The collaboration with these exceptional companies mirrors McCloskey’s dedication to quality products and service excellence.

Looking after the environment

The ability to re-use materials using equipment like shredders and crushers reflects a dedication to responsible resource management.

“Concrete blocks can no longer be sent to a landfill,” but

using equipment like crushers, screeners, and washers can bring second or 7th life to rock that once lived in a quarry. “We have to re-use. Once a quarry or gravel pit is depleted, it’s gone. Re-using rock means less travel from new quarries to projects. Quarries used to be 20 minutes from projects, but now trucks are carrying loads 120 km from a quarry to the work site.”

What’s next?

When asked about retirement plans, Craig Kergen’s response echoes the mindset of Tyalta: “This is my retirement. I have capable individuals managing operations, sales, and service, so I can immerse myself in the field. Visiting customers, exploring quarries, and running gravel

through my hands. I’m like a kid in a candy store, watching our equipment work, and make the lives of our customers easier.”

Metso Introduces Nordwheeler Portable Crusher

In response to the growing demand for sustainability, process flexibility and higher capacity, Metso’s Nordwheeler NW Rapid range expands with the new NW8HRC that is the first portable HRC 8 crusher for manufactured sand.

Finlay, global manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening, and conveying equipment, has supported Australian-based OPS Screening and Crushing in the manufacture of a vividly pink machine built with purpose: to support Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation in their fight against cancer.

As part of their commitment to social responsibility, OPS commissioned a Finlay 883+ heavy duty screen in breast cancer’s worldly recognizable pink colour, destined to join their rental fleet.

Partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) in Australia, aiming to raise $100,000 for breast cancer research, a portion of the revenue generated from the rental of this unique machine will be contributed to the foundation, aiding in their critical vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

“At OPS we have long aspired to undertake a project of this nature and seeing it come to fruition fills us with immense sense of pride,” said Shane Czerkasow, Director at OPS. “Our objective is to align with NBCF’s mission by contributing to breast cancer research, working towards their 5-year vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.”

Mica Dam

42 million cubic yards, 800 feet high

Construction of Mica Dam, 85 miles north of Revel stoke, is now virtually complete.

It has taken a fleet of more than seventy 120-ton earthmovers four construction seasons to pile up more than 42 million cubic yards of rock, gravel and glacial till to a height of 800 feet above bedrock.

Mica Dam is now the highest earthfill dam outside the USSR. Although the main portion of the dam has now reached its full height some work remains to complete placement of fill and rip-rap material along the sides of the 2,600 foot-long dam.

The remaining work is scheduled to be completed late this fall. While final stages of dam construction continue, other crews are concentrating their efforts to complete the vital discharge works on the dam’s east abutment which must be in service before water storage in the res-

ervoir can commence with next year’s spring run-off.

Underground, and almost adjacent to the spillway on the dam’s east abutment, an 800-foot-long tunnel that will form part of the normal reservoir discharge route has been blasted through solid rock and lined with concrete.

This sloping 30-foot-diameter tunnel connects with No. 1 diversion tunnel — one of two tunnels that have routed Columbia River water past the damsite since 1967.

Construction is also well advanced on a 250-foot-high control tower being built near the upstream side of the dam’s east abutment.

This tower houses the gates that will control the discharge of water from the future reservoir, down the 30-foot-diameter sloping tunnel, through the downstream section of No. 1 tunnel and back into the river below the dam.

Normal release of water

from the upper level of the reservoir will be through two 10-foot-wide gates in the base of the control tower.

While the reservoir is filling and before the water reaches the gates in the control tower — about 225 feet below the top of the dam — a flow of water must be maintained in the Columbia River.

No. 2 diversion tunnel will be equipped to maintain the required downstream flow of the Columbia River during the early stages of reservoir filling.

High on the east abutment of the dam (below the paved highway), lining of a 30-footdeep spillway channel with concrete is now complete.

This 2,850-foot-long chute will form an emergency discharge route for reservoir waters in the event of an unexpectedly high run-off when normal full pool might be exceeded.

Across the river, on the upstream face of the west abutment another major phase of construction is nearly finished.

Excavation of six intake structures for the future underground powerhouse has been completed and concrete work is well advanced. These

structures will feed reservoir water down penstocks to the powerhouse turbines.

The powerhouse — to be excavated under a contract expected to be awarded in November — will have an ultimate generating capacity of 2,610,000 kilowatts.

A permanent powerhouse access tunnel is now being drilled into the steep west rock wall of the Columbia River just below the dam.

Three other tunnels will provide access to various locations to facilitate excavation of the powerhouse cavern.

About 164,000 cubic yards of rock will have been excavated when tunnel work is completed early next year. This work is about half finished.

The tunnels, which will be 33 feet wide and 28 feet high, will have a combined total length of about 4,250 feet.

About 1,740 feet of one of the tunnels will later form part of one of two tailraces that will direct reservoir water from the powerhouse turbines back into the river below the dam.

Major contracts were awarded earlier this year for machinery to generate power at the Mica project.

million contract to supply and install the turbines and governors for the first two generating units and the Soviet trade organization, Energomachexport, a $5.2 million contract for the third and fourth turbines and governors.

Canadian General Electric was awarded a $14 million contract to supply and install the first four generators.

The first two turbo-generator units are scheduled to be placed in operation by September, 1976, with the third and fourth following at about six-month intervals.

Clearing for a switchyard, about two miles below the dam on the west side of the river, is now complete.

This switchyard, will ultimately connect with two 500,000 volt transmission lines that will carry Mica power to load centres on the Lower Mainland.

Clearing for these transmission lines is already well advanced. Construction for the tower foundations is scheduled to start next spring. The first line is expected to be in service in the summer of 1976 and the second a year later.

When Mica Dam officially

becomes operational by the target date of April 1, 1973, it will be the third Columbia River Treaty dam to be completed.

Hugh Keenleyside Dam, five miles upstream from Castlegar on the Columbia River, was completed in 1968 and Duncan Dam, 26 miles north of Kaslo, a year earlier.

The three storage dams will regulate the flow of the Columbia River and bring to end the annual threat of floods downstream in British Columbia and the United States. They also will make feasible the development of large additional blocks of power on the Columbia River and its tributaries in B.C. SP

Load sensing hydraulics and valve placement at a lower level simplifies troubleshooting, assists in secure diagnostics, and most importantly, enhances

safety by reducing the need to work at elevated heights.

The J-1170AS+ model features a detachable onboard single deck 2.44m x 1.52m (8’ X 5’) sizing screen that can be removed quickly, allowing the operator to use the machine as a standard unit, giving flexibility depending on the application.

Both the J-1170+ and J-1170AS+ machines were put through rigorous testing to ensure they can perform in the most demanding applications, including aggregates, mining, construction demolition waste and recycling industries.

My brother-in-law Dave MacKenzie is my choker man. His cousin Brian MacKenzie is the hook tender, Louie Nickholson is chasing for Captain Henweigh (Shawn Mccabe). The foreman, Norm Hinch, had just moved the 115 long boom loader into the setting as it was a pretty high bank at the landing and we needed his reach to get the logs. The “Prince” was usually loading right-away logs

and was not a big fan of the noise and confusion around the steel spar.

A pretty steep setting, we had to put two extensions on the back quarter guy-line so the trucks could drive underneath it. We had a hangup, the choker broke and threw slack down the mainline, it caused a whip in the back quarter guy-line which caused the guy-line dog to pop out and down she came!

“Look out!” I yelled — even though I didn’t think anybody would hear me. Gordie shut the loader off and all was quiet. We made our way into the landing, the top of the tower was resting on the top of the bank, Dave and I are looking at it and somebody says, “YOU CAN’T YARD LIKE THAT!!!!”

As we were standing around wondering what to do, the foreman showed up and sent us home.

The next morning, we went out to the setting and several other foremen and shop crew came out to have a look. I’m sure not many had seen this before and were just there to have a look. The foreman told us that we could leave as soon as we got the yarder back on its feet and get paid for the full day. I was running around taking pictures and the MacKenzies were com-

ing up with a plan. With all the people around there was talk of disconnecting the pipe from the yarder, damn we were going to be here all day. The plan the MacKenzies came up with, was to put a strap on the pipe and get the Prince to swing the pipe around and place it in the saddle. Norm and Gordie liked the plan. Norm got rid of most of the looky loos from the landing and we went into action. We had to block up the yarder a bit and put a strap on the pipe to place it in the saddle.

We got that done, Gordie swung the pipe back into place, then Norm hooked a strap onto the corner of the yarder and the Prince lifted it back onto its wheels and we were on our way home for a long weekend.

Back at the setting on Monday morning, mechanics were there checking things out, the rigging crew was running around spooling guy-lines and getting the tower ready to log again. When the mechanics got the machine running we started re-spooling guy-lines

and discovered that the shaft for the back quarter guyline drum was broken. That was it for this day’s work. The foreman came up and dispersed the crew to help other crews because it would be awhile before there was another guy-line drum installed on the yarder. SP

We have all seen them…

at the ball park, hockey arena, school, place of work, theatre, church…a bin or box, full to overflowing, with items left behind by someone…it’s the lost and found bin. Items within are usually small… hats, mitts, books, semi-empty lunch bags, reusable water bottles, some items of value… some… well… not so much.

But how do you lose something that is 53 feet long and may be over 8 feet wide and could be over 13 feet high… and whether empty or full, is of great value?

Prior to our battalion, Mobile Construction Battalion 10 (MCB-10), rebuilding Highway 1 into a 40’ wide superhighway, the road was about one and a half lanes wide muddy path, which meant that you had to damn-near stop when you approached another vehicle.

The road north of Danang began at sea level and wound for 30 miles over the North Truong Son mountain range. At the top of the mountain was the Hai Van Pass, which literally means Ocean Cloud, is South Vietnam’s most

dangerous mountain pass, some 1500’ above sea level. After reaching the bottom on the north side, the highway crossed a shallow bay with beautifully clear blue water. The entire drive up-and-over the mountain had such spectacular views that I never got tired of making the trip. The roadway had guard rails, but they weren’t very effective. Most every trip would reveal new evidence of a vehicle having recently gone through the guard rails. Practically every vehicle would have hurtled into the ocean at the bottom of the mountain, but depending on where the vehicles broke through would give you an idea of the horrible ride of those travelers.

When we arrived in Vietnam, we learned of the frequent enemy activity through the Hai Van pass. On our initial trip south from our camp to Danang, the other driver, Baker, and I were not surprised to find all traffic stopped at the bottom of the north side of the mountain. Because the trip was deemed to be unsafe to travel across the mountain as a single vehicle, traffic would be held so the entire line of vehicles could move as a convoy. Jeeps and armored personnel carriers equipped with machine guns were interspersed throughout the convoy, which provided some semblance of security. One convoy traveled north each day and one traveled south. The hour you arrived at the convoy point decided how long you had to wait in line before traffic started moving.

One of the biggest drawbacks of having to wait for each convoy, at least in my case, was that it literally took an entire day to make the one-way trip of 75 miles. I suppose the good part was being able to spend two nights each week in a place which had abundant shopping and numerous forms of entertainment. This was a far-cry from what we had back at our camp out in the boonies. The enlisted men’s clubs were large, and they usually had live music. If I was lucky enough to spend a weekend in Danang, I could usually enjoy a USO Tour show, and on one trip, I just missed Bob Hope’s show by one day.

Another problem with the lengthy convoy queue was the lack of sobriety when the order came to “Move out!” Vietnam was lots of things, but alcoholically dry was not one of them. The little gook kids (sorry, that’s what they were called then) were beautiful, always smiling, and happy young girls, and they ALWAYS had an ample supply of beer kept ice-cold in an ice-filled hole dug into the sand. I don’t remember the price of a beer, not that it really mattered, but I do remember getting shitfaced (more than once) on just a couple of dollars.

While enjoying the nectar supplied by the girls, I tried to pace myself so I would know what shape I was in when it was time to drive, but I was never sure how impaired some of the Army drivers happened to be. I witnessed many of them drinking while they were running up and down Highway 1, so it was quite possible some of them were more than half in-thebag when they arrived at the convoy point. True, there thousands of Army trucks on the road, so maybe it was simply due to the large number of them which contributed to me seeing so many of the trucks turned over, or those which had run-off into rice paddies.

Army tank retrievers, as the name implies, looked like tanks with attached wrecker booms. We didn’t have to drive too many miles before we saw the retrievers in action, because they were always busy “righting” the overturned trucks. These tank retrievers also came to the Seabee’s rescue when one of our fully loaded Euclid TS-24 scrapers ran off the road and got mired in a rice

paddy. (Some said the TS-24 operator got pissed-off about something and drove into the rice patty on purpose.) However it happened, the scraper was so badly stuck in the mud that this retrieval required the tank retriever, plus our other two fully loaded TS-24’s. It was quite a sight, and sound, to witness 4500 horsepower screaming as it pulled that behemoth from the mud.

The Department of the Navy must have had the driver’s comfort in mind when it ordered our tractors.

(Yeah, right!) These wonderful multi-fuel using tractors were equipped with notched pull throttles, which when set, would allow the truck to maintain its rpms without having to use the accelerator. This convenience came in mighty handy while traveling up the mountain at five miles per hour after having enjoyed numerous beers. As the throttle held the truck at a steady speed, the extra-added marvel of the large running boards provided the perfect opportunity for a soldier to relieve himself of the aforementioned nectar. It really wasn’t too hard to drive with your right hand as you stood on the running board, while you held the door open with your knee. Your left hand would be free to unzip your britches and “complete your maneuver.” On some of the switch-back curves, quite a few other drivers could be observed utilizing their throttles.

It would be extremely difficult to use your throttle nowadays, due to the number of women serving in the military. In 1968 and 1969, the only women we saw were a few nurses, girls in a USO show, or Vietnamese women.

We never got called-down for using the throttles for this purpose, because we were just doing what the Vietnamese did—when they had the call of nature, they went! It didn’t matter if they were on the side of the road, hanging off the side of a bus, or in the middle of a rice patty. We were just trying to blend in! SP
