Comprising three models, 14.42, 17.40, and 17.42, the Big Range represents the next evolution in the Full Electric lineup. These machines are designed for heavy-duty tasks at heights up to 17 meters and can handle loads up to 4.5 tons. Despite being fully electric, they deliver performance comparable to diesel models

thanks to advanced drivetrains, high-capacity batteries, and proprietary smart power management technology.

This series builds on the extensive know-how developed with earlier Full Electric solutions.

Front stabilizers ensure stability and safety on all types of terrain, while a runtime of up to 8 hours enables opera-

tors to handle even the most demanding workdays. The Big Range is Faresin’s concrete answer to the needs of modern job sites, where environmental regulations are becoming increasingly strict. Their robust structural design and advanced technical features ensure long-lasting performance, even in the toughest conditions.

A pioneering vision turned into reality

Faresin’s Full Electric telehandlers are also highly appreciated in the rental market, where they prove particularly effective in situations where internal combustion engines are impractical or prohibited. The growing demand from construction companies for

green solutions confirms Faresin’s ability to anticipate market trends.

With zero CO₂ emissions, low noise, and excellent maneuverability, the Faresin electric range is now a benchmark across the sector.

The company’s ability to blend cutting-edge technology with a sustainable vision has resulted in products that

Volvo CE Debuts Two Mid-Size Electric Machines

Volvo Construction Equipment is showcasing how it continues to push boundaries in the construction industry with the North American tradeshow debut of its mid-size L120 Electric wheel loader and introduction of the updated 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Anaheim, California.

The EC230 Electric excavator and L120 Electric wheel loader are the first mediumsized machines in the Volvo CE electric lineup, which also includes three mini excavators, two compact wheel loaders and an asphalt compactor.

“Electric construction equipment is still in its early stages of adoption, and the changes are coming fast as we move into new product types and size classes,” said Dr. Ray Gallant, vice president — sustainability and productivity services at Volvo CE. “The EC230 and L120 electric models give our customers options for applications that require larger machines while delivering the benefits of zero emissions, reduced noise and less machine maintenance.”

The new-generation EC230 Electric is now available for order. The L120 Electric is in pilot testing with customers and is expected to open for orders in late 2025 with early 2026 deliveries.

Upgraded electric excavator

The upgraded EC230 Electric excavator has improved battery performance over the previous generation — with a runtime of seven to eight hours per charge — thanks to its 650-volt lithium-

ion battery with a capacity of 450 kWh. Because electric machines shut down when not in use instead of idling, operators can work a full day without interruption in many general-purpose excavation applications.

and technology like Volvo Smart View with People and Obstacle Classification, providing operators with 360° visibility and the ability to distinguish between objects and people.

New electric wheel loader

Fast-charging capabilities allow the battery to charge from 20% to 80% in just one hour with a 250-kW charger.

The EC230 Electric excavator is the first electric model to join the new series of Volvo CE excavators introduced in 2024. The upgrades in the next-gen excavators include:

• A revamped cab with more space, comfort and functionality.

• An intelligent electrohydraulic system enabling smoother, more precise movements of the boom, bucket and other attachments.

• Enhanced safety features

The L120 Electric wheel loader is a 22-ton machine with 6-ton lifting capacity and a recommended rehandling bucket capacity of 5 yd³, giving it performance capabilities nearly identical to its conventional counterpart. It can handle a variety of applications, including infrastructure, waste and recycling, agriculture, forestry, and ports and logistics centers.

Its 282-kWh lithium-ion battery system can run for five to nine hours on a single charge, depending on the application. Charging options include a 50-kW DC mobile charger that will charge the L120 Electric from empty to full in about six hours or a 150-kW DC fast charger that can charge it from empty to full in two hours.

Pushing e-mobility forward

ACT Expo traditionally is focused on the on-road segment. For the past few years, Volvo CE has exhibited at

the show with other Volvo Group brands, including Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks and Volvo Penta. This year, Volvo CE, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Penta and Volvo Autonomous Solutions hosted a joint

news conference to share updates in their business units.

“We collaborate across Volvo Group on sustainable power and share learnings with each other,” Gallant said. “Those insights influence our engineering, help advance charging and much more — ultimately benefiting all of our customers and pushing our industries forward.” SP

Hamm Introduces HX 70e BatteryPowered Electric Tandem Roller

Compaction specialists Hamm has introduced a new model in the series of pivot-steered tandem rollers: The HX 70e VV-S.

The model with two vibration drums is fully electric, helping the construction industry to hit emissions targets with a view to making road construction sustainable. The HX 70e VV-S will also be joined by the HX 70e VO-S, a sales variant with an oscillation drum. As an ongoing technology project, both tandem rollers are initially being put into operation on inner-city construction sites in Europe.

More powerful drive, fast charging, quiet operation

Hamm’s HX 70e makes use of tried-and-tested components, such as the 400-volt Li-ion battery from Kreisel with a capacity of 63 kWh. The machine is charged via a Type 2 connector, with other charging options such as Type 1, J1772 and CCS also to be added. With the fast charge option, the battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in under an hour. Owing to the electrical components,

the battery-powered electric tandem rollers are not only quieter but also more efficient in operation than their dieseldriven counterparts. This is especially true of the models with the oscillation drum. Here, the already low noise of oscillation is combined with the quiet electric drive, making the machines the perfect choice for use in vibrationsensitive and noise-sensitive environments, such as within the vicinity of hospitals or historical buildings.

Very comparable with dieselpowered rollers

The new HX 70e tandem rollers deliver the same compaction power as the dieselpowered machines and in fact produce a higher output at their peak. The batterypowered electric rollers are operated in virtually the exact same way as the conventional diesel counterparts, with the only difference being the display, which now features new symbols to give operators an intuitive user experience.

Easy maintenance, low operating costs

Another added benefit of the new battery-powered electric tandem rollers is their lower maintenance requirement. With the electrical components of the high-voltage system having long maintenance intervals and not being subject to the same maintenance requirements specific to diesel engines, operators benefit from low operating costs. When it comes to matters of servicing and maintenance, customers and users can generally rely on the same service quality they have come to expect of the Wirtgen Group. Another plus point: Just like the diesel-

Meet The All-Electric 856HE MAX Wheel Loader From LiuGong

LiuGong North America is proud to announce that its all-electric 856HE MAX Wheel Loader has received a heartfelt endorsement from John Arwood, CEO of United States Disposal Services, a respected leader in the waste and recycling industry.

This recognition highlights the machine’s potential to quietly transform operations at Waste & Recycling Transfer Stations across the country.

“We’re truly honored by John Arwood’s support,”

said CEO of LiuGong North America, Andrew Ryan. “His endorsement reflects what we’ve been working toward offering a practical, hardworking solution that makes a difference for operators and

companies alike. The 856HE MAX isn’t about flashy promises; it’s about doing the job well, with no diesel fumes and a lower cost to run. We’re grateful for the chance to contribute to this industry.”

John Arwood, a seasoned advocate for innovation in waste management, shared his thoughts: “The LiuGong 856HE MAX is a gamechanger for Waste & Recycling Transfer Stations. I’ve seen a lot of equipment over the years, and this all-electric loader stands out. It’s quiet, it’s clean, and it gets the job done without the expense of diesel. It’s the kind of machine that makes you wonder why we didn’t switch sooner.”

The 856HE MAX, powered by a robust LFP battery pack delivering 423 kW, offers performance that rivals traditional diesel loaders while eliminating exhaust emissions—a simple but meaningful benefit for indoor and urban facilities. Its lower operating costs, thanks to reduced fuel and maintenance needs, make it a humble yet compelling option for waste companies looking to improve efficiency without breaking the bank.

The Smart Choice for Waste & Recycling Transfer Stations

Industry leaders are increasingly turning to allelectric equipment like the 856HE MAX for practical reasons:

• Improved Air Quality: No diesel fumes mean healthier working conditions for operators, especially in enclosed transfer stations.

• Cost Savings: Lower energy and maintenance costs compared to diesel-powered machines help keep budgets in check.

• Quiet Operation: Reduced noise levels create a more comfortable environment for workers and nearby communities.

• Sustainability Goals: Electric loaders align with growing environmental standards and corporate responsibility initiatives.

• Reliable Performance: With power and durability to handle heavy loads, the 856HE MAX proves electric doesn’t mean compromise.

“We’re not here to push anyone into a decision,”

added Andrew Ryan. “We just want folks in the waste and recycling world to know there’s an option out there that’s worth a look—one that’s good for their teams, their bottom line, and the planet. John Arwood’s kind words mean a lot, and we hope others will give the 856HE MAX a chance to prove itself.” SP

Alberta Rejects Fed EV Mandate

Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz issued the following statement on the highly criticized federal electric vehicle (EV) mandate:

“The federal government must face the inevitable and abandon the unrealistic, ineffective and unwanted EV mandate before it kicks in next year. This is another failed Trudeau policy, just like the carbon tax, which hurt Canadians from coast to coast.

“Requiring 20 per cent of new cars sold in Canada to be zero-emission next year and 100 per cent by 2035 is not realistic or possible. In the last year alone, Albertans purchased over 223,000 new vehicles, all while fewer than 25,000 EVs were produced in Canada that same year. Albertans could purchase every single EV produced in this country and we still would not be close to meeting this unrealistic plan.

“Let’s not forget, these impossible targets are being pushed through at a time when the federal government has a one hundred per cent tariff on electric vehicles produced in China, which accounts for 70 per cent of globally produced EVs. These tariffs have a devastating impact on hardworking Albertan farmers, ranchers and food processors, who are caught up in political posturing they want no part in.

“For months, large automakers and global industry leaders like Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, and Stellantis have warned this mandate will kill jobs and investment and must be scrapped. The mayors of 48 towns and cities in Ontario, many of which depend on auto-

manufacturing, have also called on the feds to scrap this mandate.

“And what about Canadians? Well, a new Leger poll released today found that 71 per cent of Canadians also want the mandate rolled back due to high costs and implementation concerns.

“Yet the federal government refuses to act. Earlier this year, federal environment minister Julie Dabrusin told the auto industry that they would not repeal the mandate under any circumstances.

“For a decade, the Trudeau government ignored the wishes of Canadians and pursued unrealistic and ideological policies like this. If the Carney government is serious about listening to Canadians and making life better, it needs to scrap this mandate immediately.

“Ottawa needs to listen to Albertans, Canadians and industry experts across the country and scrap the ridiculous EV mandate before it drives Canada off the road.” SP

Compact. Versatile. Quiet. Fully Electric!

Sea Lion Electric Equipment is creating buzz on Vancouver Island, BC with their new line of custom-designed electric construction equipment. Story by Ronald Mullins

It has often been said that “necessity is the mother of invention.” But in the case of this British Columbia homeowner, ‘necessity’ was an excavator that was small, versatile, tough, electric, and, most importantly, quiet.

Dylan Wallinger and his wife own a home and small acreage on British Columbia’s Gabriola Island, located in the Georgia Strait and about five kilometres east of Nanaimo. Gabriola Island is quaint, quiet, and home to about 4,500 residents. So when Dylan wanted to do some clearing and infrastructure work on his property, he was faced with a dilemma. Hire the traditional heavy, noisy, environmentally unfriendly diesel equipment or search around for something with electric power.

Regrettably, the options close to home were few and very expensive. So he commenced an international search and found a small, half-ton class electric excavator manufactured by an overseas company. Being of entrepreneurial spirit, he ordered one. But when it arrived, it was just not ready for Canadian operations. The fittings, gauges, and connections, right down to the grease nipples, were wrong. It was built for use in Asian and European markets.

Build What Ever You Want

“So I reached out to the company and they were quite prepared to make any changes necessary. What I discovered in this process is that Chinese manufacturers will make anything… you just have to be very explicit and tell them exactly what you want. So over the next few months, numerous phone calls, email messages, and a visit to the factory, they were happy to build

with the reach and power you expect from a top-tier, pro-class excavator. But wait… the Walrus, a Sea Lion team-designed, fully electric, stand-on, skid steer, is on its way.

something that we had designed,” Dylan said. Shortly thereafter, a half-ton class, fully electric, mini-excavator arrived on Canadian shores, and Dylan put it to work right away.

There is also a complete line of versatile excavator attachments available for all models. Any job, anywhere… there is a fully electric Sea Lion machine ready to go to work.

What Do Users Say

“I was surprised with how easy it was to learn to use a Sea Lion excavator,” said Mitch Kenyon of Powell River, B.C. “Within no time, I had dug up a pile of dirt so large that I needed a dump truck to haul the dirt away. The best part of the experience was the excellent service I got from Sea Lion’s staff. I would highly recommend using a Sea Lion excavator for small jobs.”

“With the hydraulic thumb, this machine can pick up and move 400-pound chunks of concrete with ease.”

Check out links and more photos at

As an aside, during this back and forth redesign, the China-based manufacturing company asked, “If I would be interested in being their dealer representative in Canada.” Remember that ‘entrepreneurial spirit’, Dylan said yes, he assembled a team, and Sea Lion Electric Equipment was born.

Sea Lion’s first offering was a half-ton class (1,565 lbs 710 KG), compact, fully electric mini-excavator, the Sea Lion SL500. Fully Canadian designed by the Sea Lion team, the SL500 is only three feet (91 cm) wide and is ideal for working in those cramped locations and yet light enough to be transported in a pickup truck. The ideal homeowner or landscaper unit. Better and faster than a shovel, but not large, noisy, no smelly carbon emissions, and no fuel. Since that time, the Sea Lion team has designed and is fully prepared to service this new and exciting offering. To date, the company has added three more fully electric, mini excavator models to their continuingto-grow lineup; the one-ton class (2,425 lb/1000KG) Sea Lion SL1000 with a fully enclosed, air-conditioned cab; the 2.5-ton class (5732 lb/2600 kg) Sea Lion SL2600 with pro-class power and up to 6 hours of full digging power on a single charge; and the four-ton class (8,378 lb/3800 kg) Sea Lion SL3800

Huitt Manering of Roberts Creek, B.C., has been using an SL500 mini-excavator for some time. “I use this machine for tenhour days, and it’s busy for at least seven of those ten hours. The battery stays above 40% on most days. I could charge it midday for a bit but haven’t needed to. The alternative to a machine this size is pick and shovel manual labour. The amount of work an SL500 can perform in one day is easily equal to a crew of three or four on most days and maybe even more in hot weather. And sitting in the cab isn’t exhausting at the end of the day. With the hydraulic thumb, this machine can pick up and move 400-pound chunks of concrete with ease.” The words of a satisfied user.

More To Come

“We are proud of and stand behind all of our offerings,” Dylan said, “but we are especially proud of our first, fully electric UTV, the Manta.” The Manta is a compact, powerful, selectable 4x4 with up to 100 kms of range on a single charge. With a 4 x 6 foot (122 x 182 cm.) power dump bed, standard 3000 lb. winch, instant torque, the Manta is ready to work hard and all day, without noise, fumes, and fuel. Dylan went on, “We think the Manta is ideal for golf courses, wineries, ranches, farming, municipalities, literally any place you’ve got things to move.”

The modern design of the Volvo L120 Electric wheel loader has helped Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) secure a prestigious Red Dot award.

A global team of Volvo engineers and designers picked up a Red Dot Product Design award for the L120 Electric at an awards ceremony on Tuesday July 8. The sleek shape of the battery-electric machine symbolizes a new era of electromobility – in contrast to the industry’s ‘boxy’ diesel wheel loaders. The thoughtful design supports improved visibility, safety and sustainability and is the first of its kind within Volvo’s broad portfolio of electric solutions.

The quality and design of the L120 Electric wheel loader won over an international judging panel to scoop a coveted Red Dot Product Design award at the annual ceremony in Essen, Germany. The Red Dot is one of the world’s largest and most respected design competition and recognizes outstanding achievements in product and industrial design. The machine’s modern look was the result of a year of bold thinking by technology and design teams

from Jinan in China, and Eskilstuna and Gothenburg in Sweden. This award achievement is therefore a testament to the power of global collaboration.

A new look for a new era of electric

Peter Reuterberg, Senior Chief Advanced Designer for Volvo CE, said: “I’m happy we won this award but I’m especially happy that we won it for this machine. The change from diesel to electric gave us the opportunity to think differently and strive for big impact. Our hope is that this new silhouette will be instantly recognizable as electric.”

The streamlined frame of the electric loader is made possible because of the removal of a combustion engine. The result is a transformation from a

boxy’ rear end common to diesel machines into a sleeker shape for the new era of electric.

Unique electric design for enhanced visibility

If designers replaced the combustion engine with larger-in-size batteries, this would have not only created a ‘bulkier’ shape but would have also reduced visibility from the cab. As wheel loaders are designed to be driven both forwards and backwards in equal measure, all-round visibility is crucial to their safe and efficient operation.

Instead, engineers and designers worked together on a more thoughtful solution and agreed to integrate the batteries into the counterweight of the machine. The heavy weight of a battery is often seen as a problem in electric machine design, but in this case, the battery is being used to replace a concrete counterweight required for wheel loaders.

The result is a machine that not only looks great, but provides enhanced visibility, safety and sustainability compared to traditional die-

sel variants.

Annie Gao, Product Platform Engineer at the Jinan Technology Center, Volvo CE China, said: “When we debuted the machine it marked a significant breakthrough, truly capturing the

spirit of an electric vehicle. It is our relentless pursuit of innovation, close attention to detail, and commitment to quality that made this possible.” SP

History ReBoot 4.0: The Edison Motors Story

Two clever entrepreneurs and inventors are creating the next wave of off highway electric and creating buzz on the internet. Story & Photos

Although, along the Trans Canada Highway and a mere 28 kilometres west of Golden, the sands of time have had their way with Donald, British Columbia. Donald is an unincorporated community, nestled in the Canadian Rockies between the Selkirk Range and the Purcell Range and along the Columbia River.

Boot 1.0

In 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway had been granted and purchased almost 580 acres of land with the townsite being surveyed in 1886. Shortly after, a lively canvas town known originally as Columbia Crossing soon emerged. By 1894, along with a train station, telegraph office and a twelve stall roundhouse, the town included several stores, three churches, a library, a doctor, two ministers, a constable, sheriff, lawyer, a jailer, maybe even a brothel and a population of about 500. It was a very important divisional point between the Western and Pacific division of the CP Railway. However in the late 1890’s CP moved its maintenance division west to Revelstoke and the train station east to Golden. The railway had left Donald.

ReBoot 2.0

Although roads had been constructed between Lake Louise and Golden, road traffic further west ended at the Columbia River. Construction on the Big Bend Highway began in 1929 and continued to 1940. During which Donald was turned into a road construction centre. Prior to the opening of the Big Bend Highway, travel between Calgary and Vancouver required going south into the United States. This decade of road construction brought renewed life to Donald.

ReBoot 3.0

With the beginning of World War II in 1939, two portable saw mills and a planer mill were moved to Donald and put into action in support of the war effort. Later these mills were incor-

porated as Selkirk Spruce Mills. Life at Donald had been renewed yet again. Regrettably, fire destroyed the Selkirk mills in 1956. The sawmill was rebuilt in 1960 and in 1971 Evans Forest Products acquired the assets of Selkirk Spruce Mills. Evans closed all operations at Donald in 1996. Again Donald had fallen on hard times and was transitioning into a ghost town.

ReBoot 4.0

In 2025, Edison Motors purchased just over 300 acres in the area, including the land that had been the original townsite and the area that housed the lumber operations. Their plan, to jump into the next decade by establishing a manufacturing operation for innovative hybrid electric and fully electric trucks. Once again, new life had been breathed into Donald.

What/Who Is Edison Motors?

In 2017, Tesla stated that they were going to be building an Over The Road (OTR) transport truck tractor. After spending 15 years in the Merritt, B.C. based log trucking business, Chace Barber and his friend Eric Little thought that an electric truck might work in their business. So they ordered one. They were fourth on the Tesla semi-truck order list…their order number CA 004. But after five years of waiting, and still no truck, they cancelled their Tesla order and decided to build their own.

Chace Barber, Edison Truck’s President has been putting thousands of test kilometres on “Topsy,” the company’s first from-the-frame-rails-up build.

They were confident that a diesel-electric truck would work. They had seen it working in railway engines and at mill sites with the LeTourneau log stackers. So

they announced what they were planning to do on YouTube and within four days were able to raise $400,000 in seed capital. This was now a serious undertaking, but they had no place to do the work. So Chace talked his parents into letting him and Eric use their backyard, put up a tent, sourced some engineers, purchased a retired 1962 Kenworth, and Edison Motors was underway. Next, they purchased the very popular 10.5-litre 3306 CAT motor, attached it to a generator, an over-thecounter fast charger, a pillaged battery bank, and drive unit from a wrecked Tesla, hooked it all together, and ‘voila’ everything worked. Everything, including the air system, battery charging while driving, lights, air conditioner, the horn…

everything. This proof-ofconcept hybrid electric truck worked.

Next came Topsy, a from the frame rails up heavyspec’d diesel electric truck… a truck built for truckers by truckers. Original engineering, design, build and initial testing took about a year. Topsy is a tandem

drive, diesel electric truck with 970 HP and 72,000 ft.

New All-Electric CBG 500 E Transshipment Cranes For Associated Terminals

Associated Terminals has taken a decisive step towards sustainable maritime operations with the acquisition of two Liebherr CBG 500 E transshipment cranes.

All crane movements on the CBG 500 E are powered exclusively by electric drives, eliminating the need for hydraulic fluids and ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable operation.

These all-electric cranes will operate on a hybrid-powered barge and mark a major milestone as Liebherr enters the U.S. transshipment sector for the first time. While the crane operations are fully electric, the onboard energy supply is ensured by a modern diesel-electric power system, allowing for continuous, autonomous operation on the river. This configuration balances the precision and efficiency of electric drives with the flexibility and reliability required for midstream logistics. It also enables optimised fuel usage through intelligent power management, significantly reducing emissions per tonne handled. This strategic deployment not only introduces Liebherr’s flagship

electric crane to the inland waterways of North America but also underscores the exceptional adaptability of its crane technology to meet the evolving demands of riverbased logistics.

Each crane offers an exceptional 105 tonnes in hook mode with a remarkable 90-tonne load capacity in grab operation, surpassing the typical range found in most inland transshipment operations and being an impressive figure in the transshipment sector. Combined with a handling rate of up to 2,000 tonnes per hour and a 50-metre boom, this performance represents a substantial leap in operational capability. In a market where efficiency and throughput are critical, these cranes set a new benchmark. The CBG 500 E enable faster vessel turnaround, reduced handling times, and increased cargo volumes. This deployment not only enhances

operational efficiency and supports the company’s extensive river-based cargo operations.

“These Liebherr cranes are more than just equipment. They represent our commitment to continuous improvement, environmental responsibility, and employing advanced technology in marine cargo handling. The level of innovation in these systems aligns perfectly with our longterm strategy for operational excellence,” said Todd Fuller, President of Associated Terminals.

A strategic shift toward cleaner cargo handling

Operating one of the largest midstream cargo transfer fleets on the Mississippi, Associated Terminals handles millions of tonnes annually. This investment marks a pivotal upgrade to its operational capabilities and underscores Associated Terminals’ commitment to

modernising its fleet while reducing environmental impact. By integrating the CBG 500 E into its fleet, the company is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also enhancing operational flexibility and throughput.

The hybrid floating crane platforms allow for flexible cargo transfers across a broad geographic area, bypassing the limitations of fixed infrastructure.

“The CBG 500 E represent a new chapter in bulk cargo handling,” said Tim Ladendorf, Global Application Manager for ship cranes, port and transshipment solutions for Liebherr Maritime Cranes.

“Delivering the CBG 500 E to Associated Terminals is not only a technological milestone but marks Liebherr’s first step into the U.S. inland transshipment sector. This project demonstrates how our all-electric crane solutions can adapt to new markets and operational models, while supporting our partners in building a more sustainable and future-ready logistics network.”

Close technical coordination ensured the cranes were configured to meet specific performance and integration re-

quirements. The electric drive system incorporates Liebherr’s LiCaTronic energy recovery technology, which stores and reuses braking energy via supercapacitors. A closed-loop water cooling system ensures stable performance across a wide temperature range, from –20°C to +45°C.

The CBG 500 E’s design and electric architecture make it ideally suited for bargebased operations, where space, stability, and energy efficiency are paramount. The collaboration between Liebherr and Associated Terminals has been marked by close technical coordination and a shared focus on long-term performance.

Pioneering the U.S. transshipment market with electric innovation

CBG 500 E, the first allelectric crane of its kind to be deployed in the inland waterway system of the United States, operates on a hybridpowered barge, combining cutting-edge electric crane technology with flexible, mobile infrastructure. Its design prioritises lifting power, reliability, and environmental compatibility. SmartGrip

technology automatically optimises grab filling rates, while the LiCAS collision alert system enhances operational safety. The operator’s cabin has been ergonomically redesigned with an elevated position, integrated touch panel, and climate control system to ensure comfort and visibility in all conditions.

Liebherr’s global service network and U.S.-based support teams will ensure seamless commissioning and long-term maintenance of the cranes, providing peace of mind and operational continuity for Associated Terminals.

As the industry moves towards electrification and automation, Liebherr’s collaboration with Associated Terminals signals a broader shift in how inland logistics will evolve in the coming decade. With the Mississippi River now serving as a proving ground for next-generation cargo solutions, the CBG 500 E stands as a symbol of progress. With this unique transshipment crane solution, Associated Terminals will usher in a new era of clean, capable transshipment. SP

Lessons from Quebec: Flexibility Could Drive EV Progress

Quebec made headlines recently when the province quietly updated its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate to allow plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) to count toward automaker targets.

While some might view this as a softening of climate ambition, Quebec’s update reflects a growing realization: fixed EV targets simply don’t match on-the-ground conditions.

Even this adjustment will help some automakers more than others, highlighting why the industry has long urged governments to focus on outcomes, not mechanisms. If the goal is greenhouse gas reductions, then set a target and let automakers determine how to achieve it.

Prescribing a single technology, such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) or even conventional hybrids, can unfairly benefit some while putting others at a disadvantage.

Policymakers should stay focused on the prize: reducing emissions, not dictating which vehicles consumers must buy. Quebec and BC

have long led the country in EV adoption, supported by strong mandates and incentives. But as targets tighten and affordability concerns grow, it’s time to recognize a key truth: flexibility matters.

Conventional hybrids are one solution British Columbians are embracing. They don’t plug in and recharge through regenerative braking. While not classified as ZEVs, they offer roughly a 20% improvement in fuel economy and corresponding emissions reductions.

Plug-in hybrids go further—offering up to 80 km of electric range before switching seamlessly to gas. For many daily drivers, this bridges the gap between sustainability and practicality. PHEVs provide electric driving without the infrastructure challenges or range anxiety that still affect rural and remote communities.

BC’s ZEV mandate currently includes PHEVs, but only those that meet minimum electric range requirements. That might have made sense when most EV drivers lived in Metro Vancouver. But today, these rigid rules risk limiting access for consumers elsewhere—undermining the very goals the mandate was designed to achieve.

At the New Car Dealers Association of BC, we’ve long called for consistent, adaptable, and pragmatic policy that balances environmental goals with consumer realities. That means considering regional infrastructure gaps, vehicle availability, and affordability.

With steep penalties for automakers who fall short of targets, a one-size-fits-all policy risks reducing supply or raising prices—neither of which help British Columbians transition to cleaner vehicles.

The mandate has already done important work: today, BC consumers can choose from over 100 ZEV models.

Now, the focus should shift to removing barriers to adoption, especially cost and access to charging. That includes reviewing constraints

like the Luxury Car Tax, which continues to penalize cleaner, but pricier, vehicles. Some voices in the sector have called for the mandate to be eliminated entirely. While that may be part of a longerterm policy conversation, we believe there is a more immediate and constructive step forward.

At a minimum, the government should pause and review the regulation. Holding ZEV targets at 2025 levels and suspending penalties would give all stakeholders time to regroup while reviewing forecasts from firms like DesRosiers, Bloomberg, or J.D. Power, and considering how shifts in federal or US policy could reshape the landscape.

BC should lead, not leap blindly. Future policies must treat all technologies fairly and reflect the diversity of BC’s drivers. This isn’t about choosing between ambition and action, it’s about delivering both. British Columbians are ready to go electric. Let’s give them the tools, choices, and policies to get there. SP

Work on the building of two new trucks is well underway. The current bays are pretty crowded… but new and larger facilities are coming later this year.

lbs. of torque, high visibility cab and all the accessories and creature comforts any truck driver or owner operator would want. It has been driven on all kinds of road and at highway speeds, worked hard, pulled heavy loads, shown to thousands of truck drivers and continues to be an innovation and test vehicle for the company.

Currently Edison Motors have two trucks in production. A very innovative designed diesel electric hybrid and a full diesel tandem and orders for several more. It is truly a Canadian company building trucks in British Columbia.

Innovation Challenges

There has been massive interest in what Edison Motors is designing and building but growth is often not without its challenges. First, their facilities in Merritt, B.C., were just too crowded. But to move on required two things, more investment monies and a larger production facility. The investment monies came easily, they were able to raise 1.5 million dollars in a very short period. Now a search for a new building or land to build a new production facility on was launched. Since governments at all levels were touting build Canadian in Canada Chace and Eric didn’t think there would be a problem. Regrettably industrial land in their hometown of Merritt faced municipal zoning challenges and was just too costly, due mainly to overseas ownership and their unwillingness to sell at market value.

So the search area was expanded. Shortly, they found

The engineering team are using the most up-to-date computer and AI technology.

the former Hayes HDX truck manufacturing plant in Terrace, B.C. It had been abandoned for a number of years but was still in worthwhile condition. However, the city had it zoned as commercial and insisted that since they would be building trucks zoning would have to change to industrial and they were reluctant to rezone the property. Bureaucracy was getting in the way of innovation and growth.

The next find was perfect. Over 300 acres of land, the whole former townsite

and industrial area of Donald. No zoning restrictions, no building permits, buildings they could use with a little TLC right away and everything well within their budget. It was exactly what the Edison team had hoped to find.

So the move from Merritt to Donald began. The old Evans Mill truck shop was cleaned up and given a coat of paint and offices built for the engineers…it wasn’t perfect but it allowed the design and manufacturing of the next two trucks to continue.

Oh Canada!

The excitement and interest from the logging, mining, construction, road maintenance and oil field industries in what the Edison Motors team are designing and building is very high. However, the latest challenge faced by the company is that although the Canadian government has mandated that all new cars and trucks sold by 2035 must be electric or electric hybrids, the Environment Protection Branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada will

not certify the diesel electric trucks that Edison is building. Meaning they can build them but cannot sell them.

The Environment Protection Branch insists that the motors installed to run the generators at very low rpm’s must meet the same Tier 4

Final emissions standards set for standard diesel engine/transmission highway trucks. There is no comparison. The hybrid diesel engines run at very low rpm and only when battery charging is needed while the OTR diesels run at much higher rpm and for hours on end. The variance between the government EV mandate and the Environment Protection Branch has the Edison team confused.

Moving Forward

Chace and Eric and the entire 25 person Edison Motors’ team are moving forward, undeterred by the challenges they have faced and are facing. New parts and equipment are arriving on site almost daily. They are teaming up with Hard Work Industries to clear the land and install the infrastructure for the new 30,000 square foot production and

office building planned for opening later this year. Along with that work is progressing on the ‘must have’ vehicle test track.

Additionally, engineering design and modifications are well underway for both a fully electric and hybrid electric pickup truck conversion kit.

Importantly, some staff might say most importantly, Edison has been working with an Alberta manufactured home builder on building a series of small homes or cabins and is currently moving them on site as staff housing. It is exciting times for Chace Barber and Eric Little, the engineers and mechanics as Edison Motors works daily to design and build the very best hybridheavy spec’d vocational trucks right here in Canada and ready for an international market. Trucks built by truckers for truckers.

It is an exciting Edison Motors Re-Boot for Donald, B.C. one of British Columbia’s original and key towns. SP

The electric bucket truck will be available in limited quantities in 2025. SP

Gasoline Out Of Thin Air?

In a rooftop demonstration in Manhattan, New York–based fuels company Aircela unveiled the first working machine in the U.S. that produces gasoline directly from air.

Compact and modular, the unit combines direct air capture and on-site fuel synthesis into a single deployable machine—roughly the size of a refrigerator.

Designed to produce fossil-free gasoline, the machine pulls CO2 directly from the atmosphere and converts it into fuel that’s fully compatible with today’s engines—no modifications required.

“When I first spoke with Eric, I told him, ‘I wish you all the success in the world, but I can’t believe this is going to work.’ Fortunately, I was wrong,” said Karl Dums, Former Senior Project Lead of eFuels, Porsche

AG. “Aircela has earned my full respect, and I’m thrilled to celebrate this historic moment. I’m convinced this marks the beginning of a long and important journey — one whose impact is still vastly underestimated today.”

The machine was successfully demonstrated in front of a live audience, with guests including New York City Councilmember Erik Bottcher, New York State Energy Chairman Richard Kauffman, and several early investors. The event showcased Aircela’s working machine, designed to produce real, usable gasoline—onsite and in real time.

Strategic investor Maersk Growth—the venture arm of shipping company A.P. Moller – Maersk—sees Aircela’s technology as a meaningful step toward global decarbonization efforts.

“We invested in Aircela because of their innovative approach to production of low-emission fuels based on direct air capture,” commented Morten Bo Christiansen, Senior Vice President, Head of Energy Transition, A.P. Moller Maersk. “With the first prototype working, we have seen an important step towards that goal. We now look forward to seeing Aircela scale and reduce cost, paving the way for what will hopefully become the transition of Maersk from investor to customer.”

While large-scale synthetic fuel projects have attracted headlines, Aircela’s approach is radically different: fully modular, instantly deployable, and built for distributed production. It offers a climate-aligned alternative to fossil fuels — without requiring new infrastructure or new vehicles.

Initial deployments of Aircela’s machines are expected to begin later this fall.

About Aircela

Founded in 2019, Aircela makes modular machines that produce fossil-free, engine-ready gasoline from air, water, and renewable electricity. Designed for flexible deployment and drop-in compatibility, Aircela’s technology offers a practical alternative to fossil fuels—without requiring new vehicles, new infrastructure, or new habits. SP

JOLT’s EV charging stations combine innovative technology with affordable, fast charging for a reliable user experience. Each station provides up to 7 kWh of free, fast charging per car per day, equivalent to approximately 50 kilometres of driving range.

The CIB and JOLT’s partnership supports the goal of increasing the quantity and availability of electric vehicle charging options which will make EV ownership more accessible.

“By investing in expanding EV charging infrastructure, we are supporting Canadians’ need for accessible and convenient charging points in urban centres,” said Ehren Cory, CEO, Canada Infrastructure Bank. “Our strategic partnership with JOLT highlights a commitment to supporting the deployment of innovative technology which will create jobs and remove a potential barrier to EV adoption.”

“Curbside fast charging is critical to the transition to electric vehicles, and providing fast, free charging to those who do not have access to off-street charging is JOLT’s goal for its expansion in Canada,” stated Doug McNamee, Chief Executive Officer, JOLT. “JOLT’s partnership with the CIB is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability. By expanding our EV charging infrastructure, we are making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and convenient for all Canadians.”

Through the Charging and Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure Initiative (CHRI), the CIB collaborates with leading EV charging network owners and operators to accelerate the private sector’s rollout of large-scale charging infrastructure across Canada. This project marks the CIB’s fourth CHRI investment and its third in EV charging infrastructure.

To date, the CIB has invested approximately $650 million towards the deployment of approximately 5,500 public fast charging ports. SP

Building For the Future…Now!

Velocity Truck Centres adds electric and alternative fuel maintenance features to their brand-new facility in Kelowna, B.C. Photos & Story by Ronald Mullins

The commercial truck and heavy equipment industry is moving away from its age-old reliance on traditional gas or diesel fuels and is rapidly embracing several alternatives.

Trucks powered by batteries and electric motors have been around for more than a century, but the current push to cleaner transportation has led to a dramatic resurgence in EV popularity and use. Tesla has become almost a household name in North America, and they delivered their first all-electric Class 8 truck to PepsiCo in December 2022. In Canada CocaCola have introduced Volvo VNR electric trucks to its Montreal fleet. More and more EVpowered trucks are being seen in city streets daily. Although China remains the world’s largest manufacturer of electric trucks, other recognizable North American brands like Freightliner, Kenworth, and Navistar all have electric or hybrid-electric models in their lineup. Hybrid diesel-

electric trucks are being manufactured in Canada by Edison Motors. RAM trucks in the US are building the Ramcharger, a gasolineelectric plug-in hybrid.

Hydrogen-powered trucks have been in experimental and early commercial forms since the early 20th century, but it wasn’t until the early 21st century that companies like Daimler, Hyundai, Toyota, Volvo, General Motors, and Hyzon Motors began active development of hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

But developing and marketing these alternate fuel trucks is only part of the equation. Ongoing maintenance and repair are critical elements.

off-on access from British Columbia’s longest highway, Highway 97, and in the growing and active development area of Kelowna, this Velocity Truck Centre features the most advanced repair facilities and parking for trucks of all sizes.

In the early 1990s, Saskatchewan Research Council began working on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as well as Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) fuelled vehicles. Early in the next decade, several truck manufacturers, including Freightliner, Kenworth, Navistar, and Thomas Built Buses, began introducing CNG and LNG alternate-fuelled vehicles to the market.

Category leader Velocity Truck Centres Canada recognized that the future is now, and when plans got underway for a brand-new truck sales and maintenance facility in Kelowna, British Columbia, the inclusion of repair facilities for CNG, hydrogen, and both electric and hybrid-electric trucks was of the utmost importance.

Sustainability

On June 20, 2025, Velocity Truck Centres opened the doors to an ultra-modern, over 40,000 ft2, thirteenbay, state-of-the-art display, sales, and commercial truck maintenance facility at 6320 Lapointe Drive. With easy

The entire building is designed and constructed to embrace the latest sustainability and energy-efficient systems. Additionally, it is on the doorstep of Kelowna’s international airport, ensuring the fast and efficient delivery of necessary parts, parts that may not be in stock in Velocity’s vastly expanded parts department.

EV Charging

Included at this new and expanded facility are Detroit eFill, heavy-duty, electric truck charging stations designed to support Freightliner as well as the RIZON EV line. This EV-Charging system is also capable of charging other Class 8, mid-duty, and lightduty commercial vehicles.

Alternative Fuel Service

Only the second of its kind in southern British Columbia, Velocity Kelowna has service bays for both hydrogen and

CNG-fuelled vehicles of all makes and sizes. These service bays feature specialized ventilation, gas detection, flameless apparatus, and systems tailored to provide an ultra-safe work environment during maintenance and repair of these alternative-fuel vehicles and include fully certified systems to safely degas vehicles.

Expanded Support

Velocity Kelowna’s infrastructure has been designed and is in place to accommodate and service a fleet of CNG-fuelled vehicles. This readiness provides that the marketplace is fully prepared for the broader adoption of all alternate-fuelled vehicles while providing fleet owners the maintenance and support reassurance they need when

transitioning to energy-efficient fuel systems.

Velocity Truck Centres Canada, with 16 locations across Alberta and British Columbia, has been proudly serving the commercial trucking industry for over 40 years. The company was founded and is based on these three values: Speed, Value, and Trust, guiding every customer interaction, every day. Velocity Truck Centres is a division of the Velocity Vehicle Group, a global network of more than 100 commercial vehicle dealerships and related operations across Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the United States. Mack Trucks Delivers First Mack LR Electric Refuse Vehicle

Mack Trucks has announced the successful delivery of its first electric refuse vehicle as part of “The Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point” project.

The delivery to Royal Waste Services, Inc., a Waste Connections subsidiary, marks a significant milestone in bringing clean transportation solutions to one of New York’s most underserved communities. The delivery of the Mack LR Electric refuse truck represents progress toward commitments made under a $10 million award from the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in partnership with the NYS Department of Public Service (DPS) and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

The electric refuse truck deployment coincides with the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s (NYCEDC) announcement of MN8 Energy’s selection to build the city’s first community-driven, freight-focused

electric vehicle charging depot in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. Additionally, the Fulton Fish Market Co-Op, the largest fish market in the U.S., will receive four medium-duty Mack MD model electric vehicles to aid in zero tailpipe-emissions logistics. This comprehensive approach supports both environmental and economic goals in Hunts Point, home to nearly 13,000 residents in the southern tier of the poorest urban congressional district in the United States

“This delivery represents more than just a new vehicle,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “It’s a tangible step toward advancing sustainable transportation and demonstrates how the transportation industry can support community environmental goals. The Mack LR Electric offers zero-emission operation while providing Royal

Waste Services with a reliable solution for its operations.”

The Bronx Is Breathing initiative was designed to tackle the dual challenges facing Hunts Point: environmental inequity from heavy truck traffic serving the nation’s largest wholesale food hub and nine waste transfer facilities, along with economic insecurity affecting local residents. By electrifying local truck fleets, the project offers the most direct approach to comprehensively addressing freight transportation emissions in the area while creating opportunities for community economic participation.

Advanced Electric Technology for Urban Operations

The next-generation Mack LR Electric delivered to Royal Waste Services features a standard 376 kWh total battery capacity, providing 42 percent more energy and increased

range between charges, compared with earlier models.

Twin electric motors produce 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of peak torque output from zero RPM, making it ideally suited for the stop-and-start nature of urban refuse collection.

The vehicle is equipped with four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithiumion batteries charged through a 150 kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. Energy

from the two-stage regenerative braking system is recaptured from the hundreds of stops the LR Electric makes each day, maximizing efficiency as its load increases throughout collection routes.

The LR Electric is easily recognizable by its coppercolored Bulldog on the cab, denoting the all-electric powertrain, while offering the same driver- and passengerside configurations and customization options as the diesel-powered Mack LR model.

High-Strength Steel Cab with Superior Crash Protection

The Mack Pioneer features a high-strength steel cab that exceeds federal safety requirements and additional rigorous global testing protocols. The cab has been tested against Swedish Impact (BOF10) standards and UN ECE R29 Cab Strength protocols. Additional tests, including frontal sled, trailer barrier and 90-degree rollover scenarios, also were conducted.

“Our cab design prioritizes driver protection under all circumstances,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America.

“We’ve subjected the Pioneer to extensive testing beyond what’s federally required, including specialized roof crush, A-pillar and rear-wall impact scenarios to ensure maximum occupant protection.”

Supporting Comprehensive Infrastructure Development

The vehicle will utilize charging infrastructure at the planned MN8 Energy charging depot, which will include 32 Direct Charging Fast

Chargers and 10 Level-2 chargers on a 3.2-acre brownfield site. The facility will support both Medium-Duty (MD), Heavy-Duty (HD) and LightDuty (LD) electric vehicles, creating an ecosystem for zero-tailpipe emissions freight operations in Hunts Point.

“Integrating this zeroemission Mack LR Electric into our fleet demonstrates that electric refuse collection can be both operationally effective and environmentally responsible,” said Michael Angelo Reali, district manager for Royal Waste Services. “This partnership with Mack Trucks and the broader Bronx Is Breathing initiative allows us to serve the Hunts Point community while reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the transition to cleaner transportation solutions.”

Advancing Sustainability Goals

The delivery supports Mack’s goal to reduce CO₂ emissions per vehicle kilometer by 40 percent by 2030 and aligns with New York State’s goal of an 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 as outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

“We are honored to advance our commitment to the Hunts Point community and demonstrate that sustainable transportation solutions can drive both environmental and economic benefits,” Randall said. “This collaboration exemplifies how industry can work alongside local communities to create a more sustainable future.” SP

Mack Trucks announced the successful delivery of its first electric refuse vehicle as part of “The Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point” project.

He/she also realizes how helpful the CB radio is by conversing with other drivers. There are nights he might talk with another driver for 20 to 30 miles. Other nights, he could travel hundreds of miles with a driver, while talking about trucks, families, football, or any other subject, which helps break the monotony, and more importantly, it helps to keep both awake.

I was driving one night while listening to two drivers having these types of conversations. It was one of those nights with very little CB chatter, and I enjoyed listening to them for quite some time, because the drivers were not using the foul language we hear too often. Except for the occasional “Smoky” alert, other drivers must have also enjoyed the two driver’s conversations, because it was just the two of them talking.

The driver of the rear vehicle came on the CB and excitedly shouted in a very high-pitched voice, “Hey, man. There is something running alongside your damned trailer! I can’t see exactly what it is, but the son-of-a-bitch is running right beside you! Oh, Oh, Oh, God damn, wait a minute. It’s, it’s, it’s……. it’s your !#^#*!-ing tie-yah!”

One of the lead driver’s trailer tires had come off an

axle, and the tire’s momentum caused it to keep pace with the trailer, until it eventually ran off the road. As I passed the scene a few minutes later, both drivers had retrieved the offending tie-ya out of the median.

A few miles down the road the CB radios suddenly came back to life. For the next hundred miles, I kept listening to drivers repeating, “It’s your #^#*-ing tie-yah!” I must have heard it a dozen times. (I may have even repeated it once, or twice, myself.)

Several days later, I picked up a load at a glass bottle plant outside of Atlanta, GA. When I arrived to deliver the load of empty one-gallon glass jars to an apple processor in upstate New York, I couldn’t wait to crawl into the bunk because I was plumb worn out. I handed the bills to the receiving clerk, and I asked if he could wake me up when they finished unloading my trailer. The guy looked and me and politely stated, “Well, you have to help us unload your trailer, so we can just wait until you finish your nap before we start on it.”

Damn, there wasn’t much I could do about it, so I just figured I would be unloaded sooner by helping, which would also get me in the bunk sooner. The empty jars were

packed four to a case, and all we had to do with this floor load (not palletized) was to place each case on a roller conveyor. Unloading actually went quicker than I would have thought. The unloading crew seemed to work faster because I was also working fast and steady.

Upon finishing, the receiver told me the jars would soon be filled with apple cider. He asked me to follow him into the warehouse. He hit a button, and a thick, heavy door opened a few feet to reveal a cavernous, refrigerated warehouse packed-full of bins of gorgeous, red apples. Each apple had very fine droplets of moisture on them. The fellow told me the apples had been in storage for several months while waiting for processing. He found a bag and filled it with those luscious-looking apples. He also wished me a good sleep and a safe trip.

I phoned to inform my dispatcher that I was empty. He gave me my next dispatch, and he said that I could go pick up my next load when I woke up. I was to deadhead (drive empty with no load) just west of Pittsburgh to pick up a load of motor oil heading back to Atlanta. The shipper was open 24/7, so it didn’t matter what time I arrived.

The actual trip from New York to Newell, WV to Atlanta was so uneventful that I wouldn’t even remember it if that receiver hadn’t given me that bag of apples, especially if I hadn’t eaten five of them along the way.

lanta went very quickly. I headed north to a truck stop off I-85 to grab a shower and some breakfast. Suddenly, my stomach started growling so loudly that I heard it over the truck noises. Then, the stomach cramps began!

Oh God, I beseech you, where is that exit for the truck stop? Great, there is a sign that says five miles to the exit, and the pains begin to subside. One mile later, the cramps returned with a vengeance, and my rear end was ready to explode. Dear Lord, if you don’t let me s__t my pants, I promise never to eat so many apples in a 24-hour period! Clinching my cheeks so hard had my body as stiff as a board, which made driving a truck anything but safe. Fantastic! There was the exit. As I started up the ramp, I thought I would cry when I saw a long line of trucks waiting to turn onto the highway leading to the truck stop. Damn, the pains were unbelievable!

What’s a trucker to do?

Knowing I could not hold it any longer, I pulled onto the ramps shoulder, set the brakes, turned-on the four-ways, grabbed a box of Kleenex, jumped over the guard rail, and practically ran down the embankment until I found a somewhat level place.

Well folks, I am positive the drivers in the truck stop bathroom were glad I didn’t make it in there. Even though it might have challenged the origination of that saying “does a bear s**t in the woods” [the bear might have gotten that idea from me that
