Connecting Canada Coast To Coast

From Vancouver to Moncton: We are Connecting Canada’s Heavy Industry—And What’s Coming Next

Life as a business owner, as many of you know, is a whirlwind. One day you’re on top of the world, the next day you’re left wondering ‘why me?’. Our continuing travel adventures took us most recently to Moncton, NB for the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show – an excellent and

well attended industry event. Getting there? That was another story. A 24h flight delay, a snowstorm during our layover, a 12h walk-about in the Calgary airport and a last minute scramble to source a red-eye flight into Moncton. We rolled into the Moncton Coliseum an hour be-

fore showtime, via the local Walmart, where I had picked up clean clothes to replace the ones stuck in Calgary. We did all the things, saw all the people, scanned all the badges, ate all the seafood, and had a marvelous show. It was most certainly worth the hassle. Next show stops for Supply Post: Toronto for Truck World and NHES, Kamloops for the ILA Convention, Grande Prairie and Nisku energy shows, Vancouver for ICBA’s “Meet the Generals”, and finally the APNA truck show in Abbotsford this June. We hope to see you there. Be sure to stop by and say hello.

Digital Services

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we’re moving into what’s next in our website and digital reinvention. Having recently upgraded our equipment detail pages, we’re now getting close to rolling out the next big phase. I’d like to drop a hint as to what we’re up to, but I’m not AIble to at this stage. What I can say is this: it’s something meaningful for the industry and a gigantic step forward in how buyers and sellers connect. Watch our social channels, sign up for e-news (www. supplypost.com/e-news) and keep an eye on these pages for more details.

Edmonton Equipment Expo

In other news, on the heels of a very strong inaugural Alberta Equipment Expo in 2025, the show returns April 22-23, 2027 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. We are pleased to once again be named the Official Show Guide Producer. See all the show info at albertaequipmentexpo.ca.

Please be sure to look for your next equipment or parts purchase right here in the paper, or online at www.supplypost.com and tell the seller you saw it in Supply Post. Canadian heavy industry has trusted us for over 55 years and we appreciate it when you mention us by name. SP

Volvo CE To Close Rokbak Business

Due to rising costs and global trade challenges, Volvo CE will close its Rokbak articulated hauler business and concentrate resources on its portfolio of other hauling solutions.

For more than four decades, Rokbak, formerly Terex Trucks, has proudly delivered reliable off-highway articulated haulers to customers worldwide. However, rising operational and supply chain costs, combined with global trade challenges such as the U.S. tariffs, have significantly impacted financial performance, making continued operation unsustainable. Production of Rokbak articulated haulers is expected to stop in the second half of 2026, subject to a consultation process.

Supporting Rokbak customers and partners

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo

CE) is committed to the ongoing success of Rokbak customers and dealer partners. Dedicated support will be available, and customers and dealers will continue to receive aftermarket services support throughout the transition and into the future. A core Rokbak team will remain in place to deliver aftermarket services, including parts, sales, technical support and training.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for our entire company, our valued employees, and our loyal customers and partners,” says Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Rokbak. “We are extremely grateful for all the support we’ve received over the years. Our focus now

is on ensuring a smooth transition, providing ongoing support to our fantastic team, customers and partners, and honouring our commitments.”

The Rokbak journey

In 2014, the Volvo Group acquired the offroad product line from Terex Trucks and established a new division within Volvo CE. After seven years of investment, the Rokbak brand was launched in September 2021 with the RA30 and RA40 articulated haulers. Since then, the robust trucks have been delivering reliable, fuel-efficient performance on tough job sites around the world.

“Our haulers are designed and built in Scotland

and loaded with generations of experience and pride,” concludes Paul. “When we launched the Rokbak brand, it was a hit worldwide and embraced by our team, customers and dealer partners. The trucks became known and loved for their reliability, durability and uptime.

TRADE ASSOCIATIONS

This makes it even harder to announce our plans to close the business, but despite extensive efforts, ongoing operations have unfortunately become unsustainable.”

The Rokbak closure is subject to the completion of a collective consultation process, which is expected to

conclude by Quarter 3, 2026. Volvo CE will work closely with unions, government representatives and regulatory bodies to ensure a responsible and supportive transition for employees impacted by this decision. SP

Link-Belt Debuts 245 X4S Excavator

At ConExpo 2026, Link-Belt Excavators debuted the new 245 X4S, reinforcing its “Here By Hard Work” message with a reduced-tail-swing excavator engineered for maximum performance in confined spaces.

Delivering 160 horsepower in a compact footprint, the 245 X4S is built for contractors who need maneuverability without sacrificing power. From urban infrastructure and roadwork to utility installation and demolition, the machine is designed to meet production demands where space is limited and precision matters.

Smart Features for Precise Control

The 245 X4S enters the market as a technologyready solution, offering optional advanced features

such as Digital Level, Height and Depth Alarms, and an integrated Payload system.

To further streamline jobsite accuracy, the machine arrives Precision Grade-ready. This factory-prepped configuration reduces the time and labor required to install IMU sensors and Machine Guidance kits, allowing contractors to deploy automated control systems with minimal downtime.

Link-Belt’s electronically controlled hydraulic pump system, paired with Spool Stroke Control (SSC), delivers

smooth, responsive operation with improved controllability.

The new Customizable Hydraulic Flow Balance allows operators to fine-tune flow distribution to their specific preference and reduces arm drift when maneuvering heavy attachments during a swing.

Power Modes That Match the Job

The 245 X4S is powered by the Isuzu AR-4HK1X Final Tier 4 engine, combining strong performance with improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions impact. By eliminating the need for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the system reduces service complexity while supporting consistent productivity.

Four selectable operating modes allow crews to match machine performance to the demands of the job:

• Lifting: Increases hydraulic pressure and control for lifting and precision

• Eco: Optimizes fuel efficiency while maintaining productive performance for general excavation.

• Power: Maximizes productivity and heavy-duty cycling.

• Speed Priority: Prioritizes faster cycle times and responsive operation for applications requiring quick movement. This flexibility gives operators greater control over fuel consumption and performance, helping fleet managers lower operating costs without

sacrificing productivity.

Designed to Reduce Downtime

A 500-hour fuel filter service interval and DEF tank with a consumption rate of only 2 to 3 percent compared to diesel allows for longer operational periods between refills. Ground-level access to service points streamlines routine maintenance and minimizes downtime.

Enhanced

Visibility and Customized Cab Controls

Inside the operator’s

cab, a high-definition 10inch anti-glare LCD monitor can be customized to display critical information, including hydraulic work tool names, system alerts, SCR regeneration status, and in-cab pressure controls. Integration with WAVES (Wide Angle Visual Enhancement System) to provide a comprehensive 230° of visibility around the machine, enhancing situational awareness on active jobsites. SP

Tigercat Revamps 568

Harvesting Head

Designed for track carriers, the TCi 568 is a robust, highcapacity harvesting head optimized for roadside processing in the 15-55 cm (6-22 in) diameter range.

It has the feed speed of a 22-inch head with the feed power of a 23-inch head. Recent design enhancements have boosted performance, increased the strength and durability, and elevated the overall harvesting and processing experience.

The TCi D7 control system comes in either Priority or Optimized bucking control, and both use wireless communication between the head and the machine cab. Cab hard -

ware and wiring have been simplified to use a single module that has constant power for quicker startups and faster processor speed to improve performance and consistency.

The 568 now uses a fulltime four-wheel drive system which reduces wheel spin, improves braking performance, and achieves greater feed power than other heads in its class. Balanced frame motors and an optional mechanical frame

drive locker improve alignment when feeding multiple stems. Three independent valve sections - one for each arm motor and one for the two frame motors in series improve feeding efficiency. Improved tree centering provides better contact with the length measuring wheel.

proved, providing better reliability and serviceability. And according to Product Manager Duane Barlow, “We added additional internal guarding and a deflector guard on the measuring wheel arm to help reduce debris accumulation around the measuring wheel.”

The measuring wheel arm cylinder pin and bushing arrangement has been im-

The main chassis profile has been refined and strengthened for increased durability and longevity. The main saw box design provides improved chip exhaust, easy cleaning and better protection of the find end sensor. The top saw box cover design makes it easier to service the saw motor. Top knife enhancements include an additional grease fitting, a keyed thrust washer to prevent retaining bolts from loosening, and an upgraded spring unit. SP

New Holland Introduces New Electric Compact Machines

New Holland Construction is expanding its electric equipment portfolio to meet customer needs and ever-changing jobsite demands with the launch of the E25X Electric Mini Excavator and the C314X Electric Mini Track Loader, offering contractors two new options for jobsites requiring zero on-site emissions, minimal noise and reduced overall maintenance.

Electric equipment is transforming when and where work is completed. “At the end of the day, contractors need machines that help them get more done, and electric equipment gives them that greater flexibility,” says Jake Sickels, product marketing manager for New Holland Construction North America. “We designed the E25X and C314X, so customers don’t have to rethink their workflow. These solutions eliminate obstacles related to emissions and noise that contractors often face, enabling them to take on a broader range of projects.”

In spaces with environmental restrictions, like retail construction, plumbing and interior construction, and even demolition, the E25X and C314X demonstrate clear

use case value and can even help develop new opportunities for contractors. For example, grocery or big-box retailers installing refrigeration systems cannot conduct construction during normal business hours without inter-

the smell of smoke from diesel, and businesses can stay open during construction. The benefits extend beyond air quality. Electric machines significantly reduce noise pollution, making them ideal for use around active schools, municipalities, livestock facilities and residential areas.

Maintenance near playgrounds can take place without interrupting classroom schedules. Emergency water main repairs in urban neighborhoods can be completed overnight without the loud rumble of equipment.

rupting customer flow due to ventilation issues from diesel-powered equipment. With these electric machines, contractors can operate quietly during the day without

The New Holland Construction E25X is a 2.5-ton Electric Mini Excavator powered by a 102-volt lithium-ion battery with a 32.2 kWh gross capacity. Equipped with an

onboard 240-volt 1-phase charging system, the machine can recharge from 0-100 percent in approximately nine hours, with a 20-80 percent charge achievable in about five hours. Depending on application and hydraulic demand, runtime ranges from four to eight hours.

Weighing approximately 5,200 pounds in standard ROPS configuration and offering an 8-foot dig depth, the E25X provides the capability contractors need for foundation work, utility installation and outdoor plumbing, and demolition applications.

The machine features electro-hydraulic (EH) controls with Eco, Standard and Power modes, allowing operators to tailor performance to the task at hand. Available in both ROPS and enclosed cab with heat option, the E25X offers excellent visibility for the operator. Adjustable responsiveness settings enhance precision in confined areas, while a two-way blade with float improves grading capability.

The E25X Electric Mini Excavator can be used with a full range of New Holland Construction attachments, including hydraulic hammers, augers, breakers, mechanical thumbs and bucket options to ensure the machine adapts to a variety of contractor needs.

C314X Electric Mini Track Loader

The C314X builds on the proven design of New Holland Construction’s Mini Track Loader, now in a fully electric configuration. Available in both narrow and wide-track configurations, the machine also offers standard rubber or optional nonmarking tracks for sensitive environments.

Powered by a 102-volt lithium-ion battery system with a 23.5 kWh gross capacity, the C314X charges in approximately eight hours. The machine also has Eco, Standard and Power motor

speed settings to allow operators to balance efficiency and performance based on the attachment in use. The ergonomic control layout allows effortless use throughout the workday.

Enhanced LED lighting, including standard boommounted lights, improves visibility in low-light and indoor conditions. Standard single auxiliary hydraulics at 14 gpm, support both singleflow and bidirectional attachments, from hydraulic hammers to landscaping rakes and tillers. This machine features a 14-pin electrical connection for complex attachments, while the radial geometry lift arm design provides durability and straightforward operation. Bucket options include 36 and 42-inch configurations, depending on the machine width selected, and an optional beacon strobe light for added jobsite safety.

The C314X is gaining popularity in the landscaping and arborist markets, where sustainable tree care practices are already a focus. Contractors can manage site work and tree removal with a reduced environmental footprint compared to traditional diesel engines. In addition, the machine’s zero on-site emissions and low-noise operation make it an ideal solution for greenhouse applications, allowing crews to work indoors without compromising plant health or growing conditions.

Beyond Performance

Performance is elevated with the E25X Electric Mini Excavator and C314X Electric Mini Track Loader, which both come standard with a seven-year telematics subscription through myNewHollandConstruction. This telematics solution delivers new capabilities for subcompact equipment and unlocks new opportunities for more connected jobsites. The digital platform gives contractors, jobsite managers and operators access to detailed machine utilization metrics, including hours worked, productivity and jobsite cost figures.

“What excites us most is the ability to reach customers we haven’t traditionally served, especially those operating in highly regulated environments. Now, we can bring them into the New Holland Construction family with machines, technology and a dealer network that meets their unique operation goals without sacrificing capability or performance,” Sickels says. Ordering for the C314X Electric Mini Track Loader opened in March, and machines will begin arriving to customers in Q3 2026. Ordering for the E25X Electric Mini Excavator will open in Q2 2026 with expected delivery in Q4 2026. SP

Introducing ‘One Yanmar’ Strategy For North America

Yanmar CE North America President Anna Christine Sgro has outlined how the One Yanmar strategy will give dealers access to one of the most complete and versatile CTL lineups globally –offering machines with both ASV Posi-Track technology and steel-embedded undercarriages.

At the Yanmar Compact Equipment booth at CONEXPO in Las Vegas, Anna Christine Sgro addressed dealers, partners and industry observers with a clear message about the company’s direction in North America. At the center of that vision is One Yanmar, a strategy designed to unify the company’s compact equipment portfolio and sharpen its focus on longterm customer value.

As President of Yanmar Compact Equipment North America, Sgro has focused on advancing the company’s position through disciplined engineering and targeted investment, guided by a clear understanding of customer priorities.

The construction equipment market is rebounding,

yet the conditions shaping the industry today differ from previous cycles. Customers are increasingly deliberate in how they invest, rental consolidation has shifted purchasing power, and margins remain under pressure across much of the sector. Against that backdrop, Sgro believes manufacturers must concentrate on the fundamentals that matter most to contractors and equipment owners.

A legacy shaped by engineering

Founded in Osaka, Japan in 1912, Yanmar has built its reputation on engineering milestones. In 1933 the company developed the world’s first practical small diesel engine, followed by innovations such as tracked

carriers, rubber-tracked crawler excavators and zero tail swing technology. Today Yanmar holds strong positions across multiple equipment categories worldwide, including global leadership in mini excavators, with more than 30 percent market share in Japan.

For Sgro, that heritage continues to shape the company’s direction. “The discipline that built our leadership in excavators continues to guide how we approach every category,” she said during her CONEXPO remarks.

Listening to the people who run the machines

Since taking the helm of Yanmar Compact Equipment North America, Sgro has spent considerable time

meeting dealers, key partners and equipment owners across the region. Those conversations consistently return to a common theme: contractors want machines they can rely on day after day with predictable operating costs. As Sgro summarised during her address in Las Vegas, “Reliability matters. Uptime matters. Predictable lifecycle cost matters.”

Construction companies operate in environments where downtime has immediate consequences. Equipment decisions therefore center on long-term performance and dependable ownership costs. “For us, reliability is not a feature. It is the foundation of our strategy,” Sgro explained.

The compact equipment industry remains cyclical,

and manufacturers must build strategies that remain effective across changing market conditions. “The question is not how we chase the peaks,” Sgro told the audience. “The question is how we build a business that wins in every cycle.”

Expanding manufacturing capability in North America

A key element of that strategy lies in expanding Yanmar’s compact track loader capabilities. In 2019 the company acquired ASV, recognized for its patented Posi-Track® undercarriage technology designed to deliver traction and flotation in demanding terrain. The engineering and manufacturing facility in Grand Rapids, Minnesota serves as a hub for Yanmar’s compact

Yanmar has invested more than $32 million in the facility, with a further $30 million planned over the next five years to expand production capacity and engineering capability. The investment reflects Yanmar’s strategy of pairing global engineering expertise with strong regional manufacturing capability.

A unified compact equipment portfolio

The One Yanmar strategy brings together the ASV and Yanmar compact equipment portfolios under a unified Yanmar brand across North America. The move creates a cohesive lineup spanning mini excavators, compact

Designed for contractors working in space-constrained jobsites — such as urban construction, utilities and road-

brings clarity to our lineup and reinforces how we go to market as one unified compact equipment portfolio.”

The growing role of connectivity

The strategy unveiled in Las Vegas also reflects broader changes in how equipment is managed throughout its lifecycle. At the show, Yanmar announced a partnership with telematics provider GeoForce aimed at strengthening the company’s connected equipment ecosystem.

More than 100,000 Yanmar machines worldwide already operate with telematics capabilities. The new cloudbased platform will expand fleet visibility and operational insights for equipment owners and dealers, supporting more informed decisions around maintenance and asset management. Connectivity is becoming an in-

work — these excavators are built to help operators work more confidently while maintaining control over grade, boundary restrictions and attachment performance. They reflect Komatsu’s continued focus on integrating technology and an operator-centered design to improve productivity and address workforce challenges.

The PC158USLCi-12, featuring IMC 3.0, made its first appearance at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2026. IMC 3.0 introduces several advanced features new to this size class to enhance productivity, working accuracy and jobsite safety.

Key features of both excavators include:

• New electric hydraulic control system improves operability by providing the

creasingly important part of equipment ownership, helping customers manage fleets more effectively over time.

A unified direction for the future

The initiatives announced at CONEXPO represent a deliberate evolution within Yanmar’s North American business. The strategy brings together global engineering heritage, expanded regional manufacturing capability, unified product portfolios and digital connectivity.

Through One Yanmar, Sgro believes the company is aligning engineering, manufacturing and market strategy around that principle.

“We are entering the next chapter of compact equipment in North America,” she said. “And One Yanmar is how we lead it.” SP

New TI5064 Impact Crusher From Cedarapids

Cedarapids has expanded its horizontal shaft impactor lineup with the introduction of the TI5064 Impact Crusher, a heavy‑duty unit designed to meet the production demands of large aggregate, recycling, and demolition operations.

Available as a standalone static crusher or as the centerpiece of the CRH5064 Portable HSI Plant, the TI5064 delivers high throughput, simplified maintenance, and flexible configuration options for producers looking to upgrade or modernize their crushing circuits.

Designed for Large Feed and High Production

The TI5064 is built around a 50-inch-diameter by 64-inch-wide four-bar rotor, offering the mass and inertia required to handle high feed volumes while maintaining consistent reduction. With a large 65-inch by 39-inch inlet opening, the crusher is capable of accepting feed sizes up to 30 inches, making it suitable for primary crushing duties in non-abrasive

quarry applications as well as recycled concrete and asphalt.

The crusher is rated up to 450 hp, with 400 hp standard in portable plant configurations. This power range allows the TI5064 to be matched to a variety of applications while keeping operating costs in check. Operators can also configure the rotor with different blow bar arrangements and metallurgies to suit material characteristics and wear expectations.

Maintenance and Safety Built In

Ease of maintenance was a key focus in the TI5064’s design. Hydraulic-assisted apron adjustment allows operators to make setting changes quickly and accurately, while patented hydraulic overload protection on

both aprons helps protect the crusher from tramp iron and uncrushable material.

Access for inspection and service is provided through a hydraulically opening hood, multiple rear inspection doors, and a hinged side access door. The crusher also features a quick-release wedge-lock blow-bar retention system and vertical-lift blow-bar removal, reducing change-out time and improving safety by eliminating the need for complex lifting procedures. The optional blow bar jib crane can be mounted directly to the crusher, eliminating the need for a crane to replace the blow bars in the crusher. These features are aimed at minimizing downtime and keeping the crusher running in high-production environments.

At the Core of the CRH5064 Portable HSI Plant

While the TI5064 can be deployed in a static installation, it is also the primary crushing unit in the CRH5064 Portable HSI Plant, a new high-capacity portable solution designed to replace earlier-generation Cedarapids impactor plants.

In the CRH5064 configuration, the TI5064 is paired with the 60-inch by 20-foot Cedarapids Advantage Series Vibratory Grizzly Feeder. The feeder is eight inches wider than previous designs, improving material distribution across the full width of the rotor and helping maximize crusher utilization. Early removal of fines also reduces unnecessary wear on the crusher and improves overall efficiency.

The portable plant features a large, unobstructed feed and discharge area and is designed for quick setup and transport. Multiple axle configurations are available, along with optional equipment such as hopper extensions, a self-cleaning magnet, under-crusher pan feeder, and grizzly fines cross conveyors. These options allow contractors and produc-

ers to tailor the plant to their specific material and regional transport requirements.

Static or Portable Flexibility

One of the key advantages of the TI5064 is its ability to serve different operational needs. Producers with permanent sites can install the crusher as a static unit, integrating it into existing crushing and screening spreads. Those requiring mobility can deploy the same crusher technology within the CRH5064 Portable Plant, gaining transport flexibility with high-capacity production and better service access over tracked units.

In both configurations, the TI5064 maintains the same core design elements—heavy-duty construction, large feed open-

ing, hydraulic safety systems, all-electric design, and maintenance-friendly features—allowing operators to standardize on one crusher platform across multiple applications.

Built on Experience

With more than a century of crushing equipment experience behind it, Cedarapids has positioned the TI5064 as a practical solution for producers facing increasing tonnage demands and tighter operating margins. Whether installed in a stationary plant or leading off a portable spread, the TI5064 Impact Crusher offers a balance of production, durability, and serviceability suited to modern aggregate and recycling operations. New HM460-6 Articulated Truck From Komatsu

The HM460 6 features an innovative traction system and a new Komatsu DBA127 engine designed to deliver exceptional power, torque and fuel efficiency.

Komatsu has introduced the HM460-6 articulated haul truck, a next-generation articulated dump truck engineered to help contractors move more material with greater consistency across challenging ground conditions. Designed around a new high-output powertrain, an advanced traction control system and a redesigned operator environment, the HM460-6 reflects direct customer input on performance, efficiency and control in demanding applications.

The HM460-6 is built for quarry, construction, largescale site development, mining and infrastructure operations where variable terrain, soft ground and haul road conditions limit productivity. With a higher-rated payload and improved fuel efficiency compared to the Komatsu HM400-5 (which this new model replaces), the truck is designed to deliver a lower cost per ton while maintaining stable, predictable operation throughout the haul cycle.

The increase in the truck’s rated payload capacity up to 46.3 tons (compared to the 44.2-ton capacity of the HM400-5) also allows for the opportunity for more material to be hauled in each cycle — further driving added productivity and increasing the total volume of material that can be hauled in a period of time. This has positive impacts across the truck’s total cost of ownership and the hourly cost of moving material.

At the core of the HM4606 is the new proprietary Komatsu DBA127 engine equipped with a two-stage turbocharger system. The engine delivers 518 gross horsepower at 1,700 rpm, providing increased torque at lower engine speeds to support strong acceleration, improved hill-climb capability and efficient power delivery under load. It also eliminates the complexity of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system through a simplified design, uses less fuel and helps extend service intervals, low-

ering the total cost of ownership. Paired with a new ninespeed Komatsu transmission and intelligent gear control, the powertrain is designed to balance performance and fuel efficiency across a wide range of conditions.

This new truck also features the Komatsu Traction Control System, paired with cross-axle differential locks, to help maintain traction on soft, uneven or muddy ground. Combined with a hydro-pneumatic suspension system engineered to balance ride comfort and stability, the HM460-6 is designed for reliable hauling across the toughest terrain.

The DBA127 engine’s two-stage turbocharger system is designed to deliver efficient boost across a wide operating range, supporting strong low-speed torque while maintaining consistent performance at higher speeds. An electronically controlled bypass valve helps manage boost pressure, contributing to durability and smooth engine response. The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards and is designed with extended maintenance intervals to help reduce downtime.

Traction performance is a central focus of the HM460-6’s design. The Komatsu Traction Control System continuously monitors wheel speed and slip, automatically applying brake force to individual wheels when traction loss is detected. This system works in conjunction with an interaxle differential lock and a manually activated cross-axle differential lock, providing operators with multiple layers of traction assistance based on ground conditions. Together, these systems are designed to help reduce tire spin to extend tire life, limit material spillage and support steady travel on grades or soft surfaces.

The HM460-6 also features a redesigned cab focused on visibility, ergonomics and operator comfort. A four-

pillar cab design increases glass area by 16% and reduces blind spots by 43% compared to the HM400-5, helping to improve awareness during loading, hauling and dumping. Control layouts were revised to group high-use functions within easy reach, and a high-resolution 8-inch machine monitor paired with a 10-inch sub-monitor provides access to payload data, machine information and rearview camera feeds.

Standard operator-assist features include cruise control and automatic retard speed control to help maintain consistent downhill speeds, and hill start assist, designed to prevent rollback on steep grades. A rollover prevention system monitors vehicle speed and rear frame angle, providing alerts and limiting machine functions when thresholds are approached. New brake inspection guidance helps operators assess brake status.

Maintenance access is also addressed in the HM460-6 design. A powered tilting engine hood, ground-level service points and extended service intervals are intended to help reduce downtime and simplify routine inspections and scheduled maintenance. The truck is equipped with telematics data monitoring technology that enables fleet managers to access machine health and operating data, helping to improve utilization and planning and supporting proactive maintenance.

“In engineering the HM460-6, the focus is on delivering confident performance in real-world conditions where traction, torque and control make the difference — with extra payload,” said Bruce Boebel, Director, Products and Service. “The new DBA127 engine and advanced traction systems were designed to help operators stay productive on challenging and versatile terrain, while the redesigned cab and service features reflect how closely we listened to customer feedback.”

New Cat 6015 Mining Shovel

The new flexible shovel design delivers low cost per ton operation.

With a versatile design offering efficient operation for a range of tasks, the new Cat 6015 hydraulic mining shovel boasts significant design enhancements that increase machine uptime, operating efficiency, and improve durability and serviceability, resulting in higher annual shovel output.

“We’ve given the new 6015 class-leading tool carrying capacity and heavy-duty undercarriage protection to deliver reliable and productive operation in the most demanding conditions,” said Ryan Mitchell, Product Value Stream Manager, Hydraulic Mining Shovel for Caterpillar.

“With its 14.6-tonne (16.1ton) bucket payload, the shovel provides proven pass match efficiency with Cat 773, 775 and 777 haul trucks operating in the 55- to 90-tonneclass (61- to 100-ton-class) range. It delivers flexible and productive loading efficiency across a full spectrum of applications, including mining,

quarry and aggregate, heavy construction, and industrial.

Meeting the needs of the global market, the shovel’s 615 kW (824 hp) Cat C27 engine delivers class-leading power and features a new maintenance-free, non-selective-catalytic-reduction aftertreatment solution that does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V emissions standards. Two alternative engine configurations are available for regions with lower emission standards –one meeting China Nonroad Stage III standards (equivalent to U.S. EPA Tier 2) and a second, fuel-consumptionoptimized U.S. EPA Tier 1 emissions equivalent.

Highly Productive

Rather than delivering a fixed amount of oil at high idle, the shovel’s new generation pilot pump configuration offers variable, on-demand hydraulic oil flow based on control lever movements. In

periods of simultaneous machine movements, the pump increases flow, and when joysticks are returned to neutral, oil flow decreases. This lowers system heat generation, reduces component wear and improves fuel efficiency by a minimum of 5.5%.

A new Cat Proportional Priority Pressure Compensating (PPPC) hydraulic system increases operator efficiency by varying hydraulic flow directly proportional to joystick movements for smooth, predictable operation. Caterpillar’s unique four-pump system found on the 6015 dedicates three pumps to implement and travel and one to swing. Pressure and flow compensation deliver only as much flow as needed. When flow is required by more than one function, automatic flow proportioning delivers precise multifunction operation. Boom-lowering float valves provide faster movements by using gravity, rather than hydraulic pumps, to

lower the boom and increase efficiency, allowing the pumps to support other functions simultaneously. Improving energy efficiency while generating less heat, the 6015’s closed-loop swing system feeds captured swing motion kinetic energy back to the system during deceleration, providing more power to drive the main and auxiliary pumps.

Increased Uptime

Retrofittable to previous designs, a new heavy-duty undercarriage protection package features long-life components and frame to increase machine uptime. Heavy-duty idlers and rollers plus improvements to track pads, track tensioning, and wear volume add to increased undercarriage durability and reliability. Withstanding harsh mining conditions, rugged front attachments are designed with high-strength steel and castings, joined and thermally stress-relieved to extend service life and achieve production targets.

The 6015’s new standard bucket linkage autolube system eliminates the need for manual lubrication. For smooth operation and in-

creased durability, the new slew bearing incorporates a triple roller design. A capacity increase for the new standard grease tank provides 500hour service intervals.

Streamlined Service And Safety

Improved hose routing on the new 6015 leads to increased durability over previous designs, and hoses can be quickly built to length by the Cat dealer, elevating machine uptime. The innovative design shares parts with other Cat hydraulic shovels, leading to reduced inventory levels for customers with multiple machines.

The new shovel connects to standard Cat MineStar™ Solutions with new Product Link™ Elite through either a cellular

or satellite connection, and MineStar Health offers expanded condition monitoring and reporting to fleet operations. Cat Electronic Technician (ET) enables service technicians to effectively diagnose and execute engine maintenance and monitor new pilot pump system pressure. Its design affords easier access to the engine compartment, superstructure components and ground-level service station for safer and more streamlined serviceability. Cleaning and material handling at demolition, recycling, and construction sites are often hazardous, labor intensive, and inefficient. At the same time, environmental requirements are tightening, and the demand for safer and more efficient on site material recovery continues to grow.

DYNASET introduces the HRVB-HD Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket, a new model designed for demanding worksite conditions. “HD” stands for Heavy Duty, indicating a reinforced structure for tough site use. The product launch is complemented by the HRVB Sound Suppressor, available as an accessory for both HRVB bucket models.

The HRVB-HD Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket is a hydraulically powered vacuum bucket designed for demanding cleanup and material collection tasks at demolition, recycling, and construction sites. The HRVB Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket was awarded the Gold Medal at the Intermat Innovation Awards 2024 in the earthmoving, demolition, and transport category.

Heavy-Duty Design for Demanding Worksites

The operating principle of the HRVB-HD is based on the widely adopted HRVB Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket, but the unit is manufactured from more durable materials and designed for demanding demolition site conditions. Stronger structure supports worksite use where durability and robustness are essential.

The HRVB-HD allows material piles to be opened and loosened to expose recoverable materials during the work process. With the same attachment, operators can loosen material, move it as part of the workflow, compact waste inside containers, and vacuum lightweight materials such as insulation directly from the worksite.

The HRVB-HD Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket is designed for demanding worksite conditions with a more durable structure.

Key

benefits

• Reduces manual cleanup work

• Improves worksite safety by keeping people away from hazardous cleanup tasks

• Speeds up sorting and cleanup on demolition and construction sites

• Reduces dependence on vacuum trucks

• Enables on-site material recovery and supports recycling goals

Hydraulic Power – No External Energy Source Needed

The HRVB-HD converts the machine’s existing hy-

draulic system directly into vacuum and air blow for cleaning and recycling tasks, without the need for any external power source. The unit produces a vacuum of –8 kPa and an air flow of 3.4 m³/s, delivering strong performance for light material collection and site cleaning.

Installation is straightforward: the bucket is connected to the machine’s pressure (P) and return (T) lines, as well as the hatch control lines, after which the unit is ready for operation. An additional suction hose can be connected to the rear of the unit for manual vacuuming, making it easier to clean confined or precisiondemanding areas on site.

New HRVB Sound Suppressor for Both HRVB Bucket Models

To improve usability and working conditions, DYNASET introduces the HRVB Sound Suppressor as an accessory. The sound suppressor helps reduce noise levels on site, improve operator comfort, and makes the HRVB bucket better suited for urban environments and other noise-sensitive areas. The HRVB Sound Suppres-

sor is compatible with both HRVB and HRVB-HD bucket models.

Applications in Demolition, Recycling, and Urban Environments

The HRVB-HD is suitable for a wide range of applications, including demolition and construction sites, recycling and material collection tasks, railway and tramway environments, as well as street, park, and urban maintenance operations.

At demolition sites, a typical use case for the HRVBHD is supporting waste sorting directly on site. When lightweight materials can be collected and separated from mixed demolition waste during the work process, the amount of mixed waste is reduced and sorting becomes more efficient. This can ease the burden on site waste man-

agement and improve material recyclability.

Improving Safety and Efficiency on Site

The HRVB-HD Hydraulic Recycling Vacuum Bucket reduces the need for manual cleanup work and improves worksite safety by enabling material collection and sorting tasks to be carried out directly at the worksite. The solution increases efficiency especially in demolition and recycling applications, where cleanup work has traditionally been slow and labor-intensive.

The system is suitable for collecting lightweight materials such as plastics, wood, insulation wool, and lightweight aggregates, helping to keep worksites cleaner, safer, and more efficient. SP

Volvo CE Updates Next-Gen A60 Articulated Hauler

As quarry, mining and heavy infrastructure customers push to move more material with fewer resources, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced an overhauled A60 articulated dump truck that delivers 15% better fuel efficiency and 5% higher productivity than its predecessor.

• The redesigned A60 articulated dump truck has joined the latest generation and is now available for order.

• Updates to the popular model help quarry, mining and heavy infrastructure customers move more tons per hour with lower operating costs.

• Improvements include 15% better fuel efficiency, 5% higher productivity and multiple safety- and performance-boosting technologies.

“This is the largest model in our lineup, designed to take on the toughest ground conditions and help customers maximize their uptime, productivity and safety,” said Tyler Smith, product manager of articulated haulers at Volvo CE. “We’ve received a

lot of positive feedback on the comfort and performance of our new articulated trucks.”

Innovation takes safety and performance to new levels

The A60 is the largest 6x6 ADT in the industry, and its new all-Volvo powertrain includes a robust transmission and axles that enable full power to be used in all gears. Its active hydraulic front suspension enables fast hauling speeds while its automatic drive combinations (including 100% differential locks), all-terrain bogie, and hydromechanical steering deliver unmatched stability and control.

Volvo Dynamic Drive, a predictive gear selection function, uses sensors for incline, wheel speed and weight to skip to the best gear for

the job, saving the fuel that is typically burned by shifting through multiple gears. Another intelligent function, Terrain Memory, is part of the automatic traction control system, identifying and remembering slippery road segments and proactively adjusting the differential locks to prevent wheel slip and preserve productivity in adverse conditions.

For best-in-class braking, the A60 includes the Volvo Engine Brake, downhill speed control, cruise control, wet brakes on all wheels, and a service brake retarder system. These highlights, alongside proven Volvo CE features like OptiShift with Reverse By Braking, provide unbeatable off-road mobility and keep operators and sites as safe as possible.

Tangible and technological changes

Visually, the A60 ADT got a makeover with its lower hood and additional LED light and camera options, contributing to a field of vision that exceeds industry standards. The cab — already an industry favorite — is even more operator-friendly with a refreshed layout, a bigger integrated Volvo Co-Pilot display, lower noise levels and impressive handling.

Its reinforced axles can withstand heavier loads and higher levels of torque and stress. Maintenance costs are reduced by up to 5% over 12,000 hours of operation thanks to simplified servicing and longer change intervals compared to the previous generation. The rotating hitch is maintenance-free and sits higher than competitors’ designs for better ground clearance and stability.

Digital tools like Haul As-

sist with on-board weighing, Hill Assist and Connected Load Out further optimize productivity and uptime. In North America, the A60 is compatible with the ActiveCare Direct advanced telematics system and backed by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty, which covers the frame and articulation joint for the entire initial ownership period. New Cab For Vermeer D24 Horizontal Directional Drill

New cab for Vermeer D24 horizontal directional drill enhances operator comfort and productivity.

The Vermeer D24 HDD now features a factory-installed cab, the first in its class, to enhance operator comfort and productivity in any climate.

Vermeer is enhancing the D24 horizontal directional drill (HDD) with a factory-installed cab option, bringing a new level of operator comfort and year-round productivity to the 24,000-lb (11,000-kg) drill class. The D24, introduced as the latest utility installation equipment designed for urban contractors’ evolving needs, is now the first drill in its class to offer a cab. The fully enclosed, climatecontrolled operator station is designed to help utility contractors retain skilled operators and maximize utilization in tough weather conditions.

“Utility work doesn’t stop for bad weather, and finding skilled operators is more

competitive than ever,” said Clint Recker, HDD product manager at Vermeer. “We added the cab option to the D24 to directly address these challenges. It creates a comfortable, climate-controlled workspace that helps contractors keep their best people on the job and stay productive year-round.”

Engineered for operator comfort and visibility

The new D24 cab option was engineered with features that contribute to operator comfort. The enclosed cab lowers sound exposure at the operator’s ear from 88 dB(A) to 72.6 dB(A). Inside, operators will find a high-back Grammer suspension seat and vibration-isolating cab mounts for enhanced comfort during operation. The cab’s topmounted condenser for the temperature control system is

strategically placed to reduce debris exposure and improve long-term performance.

Vermeer designed a spacious cab that fits the D24 drill’s compact footprint, which is ideal for working in congested urban areas.

“It was challenging to fit a cab in the available space of the D24, but Vermeer stepped up to the challenge with an interior width that is only a .25in (.64 cm) narrower than the S3 cab used on the D24x40 S3 and D220x500 S3 HDDs,” said Recker.

To help reduce heating inside the cab from sunlight, non-rack facing windows have a 50% tint, while the rack-side window remains clear for precise monitoring of the drill pipe. A second windshield wiper on the left side of the cab helps keep sightlines sharp when breaking rods.

“When an operator is

more comfortable, they can stay focused on the bore,” said Recker. “The D24 cab provides a quiet, climatecontrolled workspace that makes it easy for the operator to communicate with the locator. That direct line of communication is vital for hitting tight tolerances and maintaining a safe jobsite.”

To further enhance communication, the D24 with a cab is available with a wireless radio option.

Proven performance and technology

The cab option complements the powerful features of the D24 HDD. This powerful 24,000-lb (110-kN) class drill is powered by a 100-hp (74.6-kW) CAT®

3.6L Tier 4F/Stage V engine and delivers impressive performance with a max peak thrust and pullback of 24,700 lb (110 kN) and a continuous thrust and pullback of 22,000 lb (98 kN).

It also features 3,080 ft-lb (4,176 Nm) of rotational torque and a 45-gpm (170L/min) mud pump.

The D24 is equipped with advanced technology that simplifies operation and maintenance. Key features include:

• Automated Rod Exchange (ARE): This system streamlines operations by completing an entire rod changeout sequence with a single button push, eliminating up to 19 manual steps.

• Advanced onboard diagnostics: Accessible via a touchscreen display, this system provides step-bystep troubleshooting guidance to maximize operational time.

• Enhanced reliability: The D24 is built with premium hydraulic components typically found in larger pipeline equipment, designed to protect the hydraulic circuit and extend its lifespan.

• Impressive speed capabilities: The D24 boasts a rotation speed of 198 rpm and a carriage speed of 181 fpm (55 m/min), enabling crews to install more feet of product per day. SP

Maximizing Industrial Cleanup Productivity

Efficiency and momentum are critical in industrial cleanup.

Any downtime affects productivity, which ultimately impacts a plant’s bottom line. When dust, sludge, spills, or residual material are not removed quickly and effectively, the impact can extend well beyond the cleanup itself, affecting uptime, labor efficiency, and maintenance planning.

As shutdown windows grow tighter and labor demands increase, industrial cleanup has become a more important part of overall operational performance. The goal is no longer simply to remove material. It is to do it faster, safer, and with less disruption to the rest of the operation.

Productive cleanup starts with the right equipment for the application. Industrial environments can involve everything from fine powders to heavy debris, abrasive materials, and long hose runs in difficult-to-access areas. In these conditions, vacuum

performance, airflow, filtration, debris capacity, and durability all influence how efficiently the work gets done. The Guzzler team’s extensive industrial cleanup experience enables them to provide tips to maximize industrial cleanup productivity.

Reduce Manual Handling Where Possible

The more cleanup can be completed through effective vacuum loading rather than manual shoveling or secondary handling, the faster and more safely the job can be completed. Safer cleanup methods often improve efficiency by reducing delays, limiting exposure, and allowing crews to maintain better control of the work area.

Remove Hazardous Material

Not only is removing hazardous material a safety protocol, but it keeps productivity high when done frequently and efficiently. With fewer

hazards to avoid, workers are better able to focus on the task at hand and reduce time spent on those tasks.

Use Correct Equipment

Industrial cleanup productivity increases when the correct equipment is used. Investing in specialized equipment that works well and does its job quickly cuts down on time, lowers worker fatigue and reduces unnecessary use of equipment that’s not right for the job. Fine dust, wet sludge, abrasive debris, and bulk solids all place different demands on a vacuum system. Using equipment designed for the specific material improves efficiency and reduces unnecessary wear.

Utilize Data Integration

Taking advantage of new technology or equipment models suited to industrial cleanup is a major productivity enhancer. New software solutions can analyze data and information to help decide what works well and what doesn’t. For example, new technology can detect spills and buildup sooner, improving reaction times and increasing safety.

Conduct Maintenance

Proper maintenance speeds up operations and reduces project complexity. Schedule maintenance ahead of time to keep operations running efficiently. Industrial cleanup equipment often works in harsh conditions. Machines built for continuous use and material-specific challenges can help minimize breakdowns and keep projects on track.

Finding a vacuum truck that’s right for the job not only saves time, but it keeps

contractors from having to switch between several machines. Industrial cleanup should not be viewed as a secondary function. It is an important part of operational performance, particularly in facilities where uptime, maintenance efficiency, and labor utilization are under constant pressure. With the right approach and the right equipment, cleanup becomes more than a response task. It becomes a productivity advantage.

The Guzzler Classic is

built for the toughest jobs while also supporting industrial compliance. Contractors get the suction power they need with the containment and control their customers expect all while remaining efficient and productive in their industrial cleanup. As an industry leader, Guzzler can significantly enhance industrial cleaning operations for contractors and plant managers. For more information, visit Guzzler.com. SP

International Launches Level 4 Autonomous Fleet Trial

Ryder is the inaugural customer to participate in the autonomous fleet trial program, previously announced by International.

International Motors, LLC (International) announces the launch of a joint autonomous truck pilot with Ryder System, Inc. that places a factory-integrated autonomous vehicle (AV) into a live freight operation.

Ryder is International’s inaugural customer participating in the truck manufacturer’s previously announced autonomous fleet trial program. As part of the pilot, Ryder is operating a daily 600-mile route along the I-35 corridor between Ryder locations in Laredo and Temple, Texas.

Designed to demonstrate that autonomous technology can be seamlessly integrated into existing customer operations, an International autonomous truck runs a dedicated transportation route for a Ryder supply chain customer, allowing both Ryder and In-

ternational to evaluate performance, reliability, and operational requirements under real-world conditions.

As part of the trial, International has deployed its second-generation autonomous tractor, equipped with a comprehensive suite of factoryinstalled sensors – including lidar, radar, and cameras – on an International LT Series truck, powered by the S13 Integrated Powertrain and running the latest generation AI-based SuperDrive autonomous driving software from PlusAI.

“In partnering with fleet customers to determine pathto-deployment, we’re focused on integrating factory-ready virtual driver software into existing transport operations, without the need for dedicated autonomous terminals,” said James Cooper, head of Autonomous Solutions, International. “The mission is

to deliver a quality, OEM-validated solution to ensure our customers receive the reliability and valued experience they trust from International.”

Objectives of the pilot

The pilot is intended to:

• Validate autonomous technology as part of an active long-haul logistics network

• Identify optimal use cases and near-term value proposition in long-haul transport

• Gain operational feedback to finalize launch-ready product features

“For Ryder, this pilot represents an important step forward—moving beyond terminal- and maintenancefocused trials to evaluating autonomy in live operations,” said Seth deVlugt, senior director of RyderVentures & new product strategy at Ryder. “The insights we gain here will

help us further understand how autonomy could potentially be applied across portions of the supply chain.”

Early findings and key performance indicators

Initial results from the pilot include:

• 100% on-time delivery

• 92% autonomous route coverage, supervised by a human safety driver

• Pre-trip inspection below 30 minutes, in line with current expectations

• Improved fuel efficiency

“As an OEM, our target is to provide our customers with an end-to-end solution including vehicles, digital solutions, and operational support services, allowing customers to operate directly from their existing infrastructure and minimizing additional complexity,” said Cooper. “Ryder’s participa-

tion underscores our shared commitment to practical autonomous fleet deployment. Together, we’re working to turn pilots into scalable, commercial solutions.”

Moving autonomy from testing to live operations

Achieving advancements in AV deployment depends on collaborations among industry experts like International, Ryder, and PlusAI to:

• Collect operational data on uptime, serviceability, and terminal processes

• Evaluate logistics, operations, and support consid-

erations for AVs

• Explore point-to-point transportation concepts through digitally enabled and software-defined vehicle solutions

“Autonomy is informed by real-world operational experience, not test tracks,” said deVlugt. “Operating an AV in an active logistics network with the supervision of a safety driver allows us to validate the technology where it matters most—on a real lane, moving real freight, for a real customer.” SP

Characters I Have Known

There were several interesting folks I have worked with over the years. By Ed Miller.

Big Daddy

One of WMTS’s drivers, Big Daddy, was one of the good guys and everyone liked him. Extremely mannered and polite, he was a happy family man with a kind heart. Befitting his nickname, he was one of the drivers Frank utilized to stand on the rear of the forklift, since Big Daddy tipped the scales at wellover 300 pounds. Strong as an ox, I had seen him sling heavy canvas tarps around as though they were cardboard.

Polite though he was, even Big Daddy had his breaking point. Most of us never saw him get angry, but several other drivers later verified this story. Big Daddy arrived before daylight at a building supply distributor located on Long Island. Having delivered to this customer many times, he knew by arriving early, he could remove his tarps and chains from his load of plywood, and then he would be ready for the unloading crew when they got to work at 0700. When the forklift driver arrived for work, he promptly unloaded two bundles off Big Daddy’s trailer, and then informed Big Daddy that he had to go load an outbound company truck, but he would return as soon as he was finished. Big Daddy watched, and waited, while the forklift driver loaded the company truck.

Close to 0900, Big Daddy began fuming when he saw the forklift driver begin to unload another trucker’s flatbed load, which had arrived over an hour after Big Daddy had arrived. Big Daddy set out to find the shipping and receiving supervisor. Upon locating the supervisor, Big Daddy explained what was taking place. The supervisor told Big Daddy he didn’t know the answer to his question, although he was sure that the wait would not be much longer. Big Daddy looked at the supervisor and asked, “Buddy, what do you think you would do if a mad gorilla came after you?”

Not having a clue why Big Daddy would ask such

a question, he replied something like, “I don’t guess I would like it too well, and I would probably run.”

Stepping up close to the supervisor’s face, Big Daddy declared, “Well then, what do you think you would do if a mad, 350-pound n-word got ahold of your ass?”

Some drivers reported that it seemed like every forklift on Long Island descended upon Big Daddy’s flatbed, because it was only minutes before he was completely unloaded. Big Daddy’s choice of words surprised everyone, especially the supervisor, because it was totally out of his character using the n-word, because he was very proud to be African American.

Maybe Big Daddy knew what he was doing. We never received a complaint from that consignee and, after each future delivery to the Long Island location, Big Daddy would make his “empty call” even before the company officially opened at 0700.

Over the next couple of years, this gentle giant, Big Daddy, helped me overcome my woefully inadequate knowledge of African American culture. He took me to my first soul food restaurant in Dundalk, MD, a place I then frequented for over 20 years. I poked fun at him by saying the good-tasting food was the reason he was so damned big. He couldn’t deny it!

Big Daddy informed me on a Wednesday that his grandmother had passed and that he needed to be off to “funeralize” her. After offering my condolences, of course I approved his days off, and I told him I would see him back at work the following Monday. He quickly replied, “Uh, no. It takes us black folks at least a week to put ‘em in the ground!” We saw Big Daddy back to work a week and a half later, and I never made that mistake again.

Big Daddy’s large appetite finally did him in when he suffered a fatal heart attack when he was 55 years old. I still recall his smiles and laughs as though they hap-

pened yesterday. His passing is another example of only the good dying young. RIP Big Daddy.

Randy

All trucking company employees, whether drivers or office personnel, have always been known as hard working men and women who usually don’t quit work just because the clock shows 5:00 PM. Along with the many men and women of every profession, those working in trucking company offices have also been known to be hard drinkers.

(I am not referring to drivers drinking while driving, although, unfortunately, this behavior still exists to some extent.)

One of WMTS’s drivers certainly enjoyed his alcohol, but never while he drove. When he was sober, he was a driver you could usually count upon to deliver and pick-up on time, but every several months, Randy would tie-one-on and go AWOL. Each time this happened, we knew exactly where to find him, so we would put two drivers in a truck headed south from Baltimore. These drivers would find Randy’s tractor and trailer in a parking lot on Highway 301, just south

of La Plata, MD. Randy would be found across the highway in a motel, better known as his “drunken home away from home.” Sometimes, the motel owner would call our office to let us know Randy was a guest, and that Randy had given the owner the keys to his truck. The owner always assured us the rig would be safe. Several days later, after achieving sobriety, Randy would call for someone to come get him. We would ask a northbound driver to pick him up and take him to Baltimore to get his truck. Randy would stay sober for another couple of months before the bottle lured him back to his motel room.

Grady

It is a helluva thing to remember someone because of their stupidity, but that is the reason I still recall Grady’s story. Grady was an elderly driver who had been there, done that twice, and he had plenty of T-shirts to prove it. I don’t care how many miles a person has driven, or how many places one has seen, if you had asked Grady, he has driven and seen many more of them than you will ever see! I don’t remember why, if I ever knew, but one of Grady’s legs was quite a bit

shorter than the other, which made his gait more up-anddown than forward. I remember him saying, “they better not try putting me on a flatbed because of this leg,” although no dispatcher would have even considered doing so. Grady was highly opinionated and, as Obie would have said, “Grady would have argued with a stop sign!”

Grady arrived at the terminal on a Sunday afternoon to begin his trip His load was 43,000 pounds of paper stock consigned to a print shop in New York City. Grady talked with several other drivers as each filled their trucks with fuel, and I am certain the audience had caused Grady to be “holding court.” When the other drivers finally said they were leaving the yard, Grady told them to wait long enough for him to hook to his trailer, and then he would run with them up I-95.

When Grady arrived at his destination in Manhattan the next morning, he climbed out of the cab to open the trailer doors before he backed up to the dock. Well, Grady opened the doors to find an empty trailer. His first declarations were that someone was trying to screw with him, although as he later stated, the

trailer number, to which he had hooked, was “awfully close” to the trailer number to which he should have hooked, that being the trailer containing the paper. Grady had pulled an empty trailer for 500 miles, rather than a load of paper weighing 43,000 pounds. He had been running his mouth so much, and because he was in such a big hurry to catch the other drivers, he had failed to open the trailer doors to look inside. He did say he thought the truck was pulling well, and that this was because he told the shop it needed to be worked-on, and that the maintenance shop had done such a good job. Grady kept to himself for a few days due to all the ribbing he received. He also never questioned why he did not get paid for those 500 miles. SP

Detroit Introduces 2027 Heavy-Duty Gen 6 Engines

Detroit, leading manufacturer of heavy duty truck engines and commercial vehicle components, has announced its new Gen 6 heavy duty engine portfolio, comprised of the DD13, DD15 and DD16.

The next evolution of its popular engines is fully compliant with the EPA’s 2027 standard and will be available for all heavy-duty Freightliner and Western Star trucks.

Stringent standards

At their core, the Detroit Gen 6 engines refine the previous generation’s design, providing confidence, du-

“Freightliner and Western Star customers depend on Detroit to operate reliably, efficiently and powerfully, and we’re honored by the trust placed in both the Detroit brand and the DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines to help navigate past transitions as well as this next one,” said David Carson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Daimler Truck North America. “With our Gen 6 engines, we have a successor that builds on years of proven performance to be prepared for ’27 and beyond.”

rability, and reliability that Detroit is known for. As part of their updates, the engines deliver enhanced efficiency designed to help offset the impacts from emissions-related changes. A redesigned and simplified fuel system removes the need for amplified injection and supplies higher, stronger and more consistent fuel flow. Similarly, the addition of an asymmetric intake port increases swirl, and, combined with new fuel injectors, improves fuel and air mixing for a more complete combustion. The use of Miller timing on the camshaft reduces the work of compression, increases the compression ratio and contributes to overall engine efficiency.

To meet compliance with stringent NOx requirements included in EPA’s 2027 standards, Detroit Gen 6 engines use a pre-Selective Catalytic Reduction (pre-SCR) system

Velocity Trailer Centers Expands Vanguard Trailer Availability

Velocity Trailer Centers Expands Vanguard Trailer Availability Across Southeast U.S.

Velocity Trailer Centers, a division of Velocity Vehicle Group, has expanded its Vanguard trailer distribution network across Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, effective February 16, 2026. The expansion strengthens the company’s ability to support fleets and owner-operators throughout the Southeastern United States, with greater access to Vanguard dry van and refrigerated trailers, along with customizable factorybuilt options.

Velocity Trailer Centers is the dedicated trailer sales and support division of Velocity Vehicle Group, providing customers with access to new and used trailer inventory, equipment financing, and aftermarket support through the broader Velocity commercial vehicle network.

The Southeast is one of the fastest-growing freight markets in the U.S., driven by continued expansion in warehouse infrastructure, port activity, and distribution center development. These factors have strengthened the region’s role as a key logistics gateway within the U.S. freight network while increasing demand for reliable trailer equipment across major transportation corridors.

“Expanding Vanguard trailer availability into Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia allows us to better support fleets and owner-operators across one of the most dynamic freight regions in the U.S.,” said Robert Ramey, General Manager, Velocity Trailer Centers. “By combining Vanguard’s proven trailer engineering with Veloc-

– containing the same robust, familiar elements of the main aftertreatment system (ATS) – positioned upstream of the primary ATS. This proven and known technology, combined with a thermal control valve, helps the ATS to reach operating temperature more quickly, reducing the need for parked regens. The ATS design preserves existing chassis space with no impact to back-of-cab packaging, a key advantage for vocational customers and truck equipment manufacturers. A new wastegate actuator also improves braking performance and gradeability with greater power for high altitude conditions. New engine ratings of up to 1,900 lb.-ft of torque enable greater downspeeding capabilities for the right combination of power and efficiency.

20 years of a proven platform

First announced in 2007, Detroit’s DD engine series, also known as the Heavy-Duty Engine Platform (HDEP), was introduced as a clean sheet design to help fleets navigate a rapidly changing regulatory landscape without compromising reliability, efficiency or power. Following its introduction in 2007,

each successive generation – delivered in 2010 (Gen 2), 2013 (Gen 3), 2016 (Gen 4) and 2021 (Gen 5) – met increasingly stringent emissions standards while continuing to deliver the performance and uptime customers expect from Detroit. This continuous improvement helped to solidify the DD engine series as a leading choice across the industry. Today, there are 1.2 million heavy-duty engines operating in on-highway and vocational applications, delivering reliably for fleets across North America and other global markets.

More than an engine

As the leading powertrain brand, Detroit integrates advanced engines with Detroit Assurance safety systems to help protect drivers and strengthen fleet confidence on the road. Detroit Assurance is a core part of Detroit’s engineering approach, applying radar- and camera-based systems that support safer decision-making through features such as Active Break Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Side Guard Assist. Detroit Connect complements these systems by providing real-time data, predictive analytics and proactive support that give fleets greater visibility into per-

formance and maintenance needs. Together, they form an integrated, safety-driven powertrain ecosystem designed to improve reliability, reduce downtime and help fleets operate efficiently throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

Nearly a century of trusted engines

All Detroit engines are manufactured in the US at the Redford, Michigan campus. Home to North American engine and component research and development for Daimler Truck North America, as well as engine, transmission and axle production, the facility employs more than 2,000 people. Since its founding in 1938, Detroit has long been a stalwart of automotive manufacturing in the area and most recently received an investment of $285 million – supported by incentives from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the Michigan Strategic Fund – to enable, in part, the manufacture of Gen 6 engines.

The Detroit Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 engines will be available beginning in January 2027, with Gen 6 DD16 production following in January 2028. SP
